Trek Domane AL Disc 4 review: An astounding and affordable all-roader

Trek's new entry-level road bike combines an endurance fit with sporty handling and a whole bunch of versatility..

I simply love that some of the most interesting and versatile road bikes on the market currently sit at the budget end of the spectrum. And that’s exactly the case for Trek’s new Domane AL Disc, an all-road-esq bike based around a budget-minded aluminium frame.

Much like Trek’s more premium carbon fibre Domane offerings, this new aluminium version aims to offer plenty of versatility via combining (super-)wide tyre clearance with a comfortable fit and a sporty road-bike feel.

Put another way, the new Domane AL Disc slips snugly in between two other aluminium drop bar bikes in Trek’s range. There’s the more expensive, road-focused, and performance-oriented Emonda ALR ; and there’s the road-leaning gravel bike that is the Checkpoint AL . And I truly believe a bike like the Domane AL Disc is the right choice if you can’t decide between these two. That of course assumes you can actually find one to buy.

At our recent Field Test the Victorian High Country’s endless alpine roads and gravel paths were the perfect place to cap off our testing of Trek’s latest affordable road bike. Let’s dive in.

Budget frame with all the right bells and whistles

Story highlights.

What: Trek’s new entry-level and versatile road bike. || Key updates: Overhauled geometry to match carbon version, wide tyre clearance, disc brakes, plenty of mounting points for accessories, 32 mm tyres as stock.|| Weight: 10.45 kg (without pedals, 54 cm frame size) || Price: US$1,600 / £1,350.00 /AU$n/a || Highs: Huge tyre clearance, unique geometry is great for the purpose, quite comfortable ride quality, easy to service and upgrade, rides lighter than it feels to pick up, Shimano Tiagra just works, rim width, quality thru-axles.|| Lows: Basic and heavy frame, making the bike tubeless requires new tyres and a handful of parts, extremely heavy wheels (especially given the bike’s price), handlebar drop shape is too compact.

Like the Checkpoint AL, the new Domane AL Disc is built with Trek’s Alpha 100-series aluminium. Trek has kept rather quiet about the specifics of this tubing, but effectively it’s the company’s most affordable material blend with simple straight gauge tubes and only minimal smoothing (or none at all) of the welds throughout the frame.

However, while the material may be price-point-oriented, the general construction is still quite impressive. The tubes have been formed into shapes to closely mimic those of the carbon Domane, the top tube is curved and flattened, while the down tube is almost rectangular in shape. Meanwhile, the chainstays have been dimpled to the extreme in order to provide an elegant sufficiency of tyre clearance.

Up front there’s a fork with carbon fibre blades, but the rest of its construction, including the tapered steerer, is aluminium. With a modest build the Domane AL Disc frame and fork aren’t light and you can expect the frame to be well in excess of 1,400 grams. And there’s just no pretending this is a lightweight road bike once you add in a budget-minded build, wide tyres, and disc brakes.

Despite that basic frame construction I was left positively surprised. I had expected a frameset that did almost nothing to assist with ride comfort, and I was wrong. Instead the Domane AL Disc did a respectable job at numbing vibrations and taking the edge off larger impacts.

trek domane al disc frameset

A big part of that ride quality is the result of a frame that’s more flexible – this bike does have a little more sway in key areas versus more premium offerings. I didn’t find this to impact on handling, but along with the high bike weight it creates a ride that feels less eager to jump forward with bursts of power.

As stock, the Domane AL Disc is fitted with 32 mm tyres, and without question, these go a long way to making the bike feel as smooth as it is.

Impressively the Domane AL Disc can go wider again. Trek officially suggests the frame can fit 35 mm tyres front and rear, just shy of the 38 mm figure it achieves with the latest carbon Domane. But as usual, that quoted figure is on the safe side, so much so that I managed to fit measured 42 mm Continental Terra Trail tyres into the frame front and rear, and the only touching point was the Tiagra front derailleur. And I’d bet a new Shimano GRX front derailleur and matching offset crank would fix this clearance limitation.

trek domane al disc frameset

The wide tyre clearance is matched with some adventure-friendly mounting points. In addition to the regular two bottle cage mounts inside the frame, there’s a third mount under the down tube. There are mounts for a Bento-type bag on the top tube. There’s a rack mount at the rear in case you plan on commuting or touring. And there are mounting points for full-length fenders front and rear, with the rear using a removable seatstay bridge for a cleaner look in case you only ride in fine weather.

The frame’s front triangle features internal cable routing for a clean look, with those cables then being run externally past the bottom bracket. That bottom bracket is a standard 68 mm English threaded variant, while the regular round 27.2 mm seatpost with external clamp is equally as common and easy to upgrade. Huzzah!

Another neat trick found on many of Trek’s bikes is a space in the left chainstay for an integrated “DuoTrap” speed and cadence sensor. It is, however, sold separately.

High-end geometry

Trek offers this bike in seven frame sizes, all of which feature a modern take on a relaxed endurance-type fit. The stack figures offer a less aggressive riding position without placing the handlebars excessively high to negatively impact handling. The reach figures are kept shorter than the status quo which only assists in a more casual fit that should feel comfortable for most and confident once off the tarmac.

Much like Trek’s existing Domane carbon bikes , this budget model offers geometry designed around the use of larger 32 mm tyres which would otherwise raise the bike’s height. This is most evident by the significant 80 mm of bottom bracket drop, a figure that’s lower than many gravel bikes (including Trek’s own Checkpoint).

trek domane al disc frameset

I found that bottom bracket drop quite noticeable. Where it can feel like you’re sitting on top of a number of endurance-type road bikes, it actually felt like I was in this one. The whole bike just felt lower to the ground, more stable, and more confident through corners. And that lower centre of gravity also made the bike feel like it’s lighter than its actual mass. However, do be careful of the lowered pedal clearance through corners if you’re used to a taller-standing bike.

The head angle (71.3º for a 54 cm size) is also more in line with what you’d expect of a stable gravel bike versus a road bike. However, Trek has matched this with a longer-than-most 53 mm fork offset which helps to speed up the handling. The result sees the trail figure – a good indication of how quickly the bike steers – kept closely comparable to sportier road bikes. For example, the tested 54 cm sample offers a 61 mm trail figure with 32 mm tyres. And despite its wider tyres and relaxed fit, this still feels like a road bike.

trek domane al disc frameset

That slack head angle, long fork offset, and 420 mm chainstay length all work together to elongate the wheelbase to over a metre. And while the trail figure may be quite sporty, there’s just no hiding the sheer amount of stability on tap here.

The Domane AL Disc loves to go fast, but it just needs just that little more forewarning to get it turning. This somewhat slower attitude is exactly what most newer riders need and the result is likely to be a safer-riding bike. Meanwhile, that added front centre length provides generous toe clearance to the front wheel.

A weight that aligns with the price

OK, so the new Domane AL Disc ticks a lot of boxes, but it’s worth reiterating that it’s most certainly made to a price, and the needle on the scale will attest to that. With the only carbon fibre on the entire bike found in the front fork blades, this Domane AL Disc 4 (US$1,600 / £1,350.00 /AU$n/a) test sample weighs 10.45 kg without pedals. That’s not at all a small figure for a road-going bike.

Trek offers the same Domane AL Disc frameset in two cheaper models starting from US$1,050 / £800.00 / AU$1,400, however, both of those feature mechanical actuated disc brakes. Those in certain countries will have access to a model priced above the one I tested: the Domane AL Disc 5 which features Shimano 105 shifting and brakes and sells for US$1,800 / £1,600 / AU$n/a.

As tested, the AL Disc 4 features a full Shimano 2×10-speed Tiagra drivetrain and matching hydraulic brakes. And while the groupset is fairly weighty, its shifting and braking performance far surpasses its price point. Shifts are positive, fast and consistent. The affordable components mean that upkeep isn’t painful on the wallet.

trek domane al disc frameset

Gearing wise there’s an 11-32T cassette at the back, with a compact (50/34T) crank on the front. This is plenty of range for general rolling hills, however there were times that I wanted an even lower gear for getting the weighty bike up excessively steep inclines. It’s worth pointing out that the more expensive Domane Al Disc 5 (with an 11-speed 105 groupset) comes with a 11-34T cassette, and I feel that size is a much better match to a bike rolling on bigger 32 mm tyres. Thankfully the stock Tiagra derailleur can handle an 11-34T cassette and so making the switch is a relatively low-cost upgrade.

The braking performance from the Tiagra hydraulic disc brakes leaves little to complain about. The light lever feel and clear power modulation are significant improvements over the mechanical brakes fitted to cheaper models in Trek’s range. I understand this will upset those who use mechanical disc brakes, but I believe this aspect alone is worth spending more for.

trek domane al disc frameset

The rest of the build comes from Bontrager, Trek’s own component and accessory brand. All the pieces proved to be well suited and reliable choices for the bike’s intended purpose.

Clearly built to take a beating, the stock wheels are anything but light. I weighed them at 2,270 g for the pair (1,050 g front, 1,220 g rear) which makes them the heaviest road wheelset I’ve seen in recent memory. At the centre are basic cup-and-cone loose ball bearing thru-axle hubs (made by Formula) and straight gauge spokes. On the outside sit aluminium rims with a surprisingly modern 21 mm internal width and tubeless compatibility (required rim strips are sold separately). Weight aside those are two good things.

Those wheels may be tubeless compatible, but the provided Bontrager R1 Hard-Case Lite tyres are not. These feature a wire bead construction, good puncture resistance, and also carry a fair bit of weight in the process (460 g apiece). A bunch of the bike’s testing was done with Continental GP5000 TL 32 mm tyres, and not only did these knock about 200 g from the bike, they provided a noticeably faster-rolling and smoother (as a result of the more supple tyre construction) ride.

I’d say keep the Bontrager tyres if you plan on commuting, touring, or gravel riding with this bike, but consider swapping them out to a more premium offering if you’re seeking speed on the road.

trek domane al disc frameset

Bontrager’s own alloy handlebar and stem work just fine, although much like I mentioned in our Field Test review of the Emonda SL 6 Pro , I did find that my wrists would contact the top of the handlebar when riding in the drops. Similarly, the provided aluminium seatpost is wonderfully reliable and easy to adjust, however it does nothing to aid in seated comfort. More comfort awaits through an upgrade to an intentionally flexible carbon seatpost.

Bontrager’s own saddle gave little to complain about with a non-offensive shape matched with a good balance of softness and support. And I quite liked the grippy, thick and rubberised bar tape used here.

Finally it’s worth mentioning that the tested Domane AL Disc 4 is available in three frame colours, and even the boring black option isn’t so boring. Kudos to Trek there for keeping things fun for all.

Make it what you want

Trek doesn’t have a whole lot of competition in this space at the moment when you consider that enormous tyre clearance, accessible geometry, and the relatively affordable asking price. The obvious competitor is Giant’s Contend AR , a bike I’ve reviewed and praised highly before. There’s also the new Orbea Avant to consider (a bike I tried and failed to get for review). From there the list gets pretty thin, at least for now. I’m betting we’ll see many more options in this versatile all-road space follow in mid-2021.

Despite its significant weight being a shock for the asking price, I really enjoyed riding this bike. It’s proof that good geometry and a decent ride quality matter more than anything else. So much so that I tried to buy the test sample with plans of maxing out the tyre clearance and building myself a go-anywhere thrasher drop-bar bike.

However, those plans were foiled as Trek desperately needed the bike back due to pandemic-based consumer demand. I’ve since heard from a few sources that demand is greatly outpacing supply for the new Domane AL Disc, and that leaves me feeling happy-sad. I’m happy knowing that many likely newer cyclists have already ordered this great bike, but sad to think that many others will miss out.

Trek Domane - Weight, Specs, Price

Trek domane 3rd party reviews, 2022 trek domane review - a tpc quick-take.

  • IsoSpeed Technology: A standout feature, the rear IsoSpeed decouplers absorb fatiguing road chatter. They make the ride unmistakably smooth, like riding on a cushion of air.
  • Storage integration: The built-in storage compartment on the down tube is genuinely useful. It beats having to strap a saddlebag to the frame and clutter the bike.
  • Versatility: Generous tire clearance (up to 38mm without fenders) and the overall design mean the Domane is adept at handling both tarmac and light gravel. It opens up avenues for exploration beyond the usual road routes.
  • Endurance geometry: Maintaining the spirit of the Domane lineage, the 2023 version offers a comfortable, upright riding position suited for long rides.
  • Weight: (18.5 lbs size 56cm) The Domane, with all its tech and features, is on the heavier side, especially in its base models. This might not be a concern for the casual rider, but weight weenies might raise an eyebrow.
  • Cost: The technology packed into the Domane makes it a bit pricey. While you get a lot for your money, it might be overkill for those not intending to utilize all its features.
  • Aero compromises: Compared to race or aero road bikes, the Domane doesn't cut through the wind as efficiently. It's built for comfort over speed, and it shows.
  • Over-engineering for some: While tech enthusiasts might rejoice, the myriad of features could be overwhelming for someone looking for a simple endurance experience.

Trek Domane SL Disc frameset

This product has been selected to feature in road.cc recommends. That means it's not just scored well, but we think it stands out as special. Go to road.cc recommends

At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Good scores are more common than bad, because fortunately good products are more common than bad.

  • Exceptional
  • Not so good

The Trek Domane SL is a smooth-riding road bike – even an all-road bike – courtesy of IsoSpeed tech both front and rear, which helps it damp down small vibrations and bigger hits. It's not the lightest bike out there, but if ride quality is your main concern, it's a real contender.

First of all, a quick explanation of the bike we're reviewing. The Domane SL frameset arrived at road.cc built up with the new SRAM Rival eTap AXS groupset so that we could review those components too. It's not a standard build, but we've not reviewed the Domane SL before and thought we'd take the opportunity.

> Buy now: Trek Domane SL Disc frameset from Trek for £2200.00

Our 58cm bike, complete with Zipp 303S wheels set up tubeless with WTB Exposure 700 x 30mm tyres, weighs 8.82kg (19.4lb).

Trek does offer the Domane SL 6 eTap with a SRAM Rival eTap AXS groupset for £4,200, although this model is fitted with Bontrager Paradigm Comp 25 wheels.

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - riding 4.jpg

Okay, on with the show...

IsoSpeed is the headline news here, so let's kick off with what it actually is. You can scroll down a few paragraphs if this is old news for you.

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - top tube detail.jpg

Trek first introduced IsoSpeed in 2012, although it has evolved since then. Rear IsoSpeed came first, decoupling the top of the seat tube from the rest of the frame. The aim is to take the edge off big hits and smooth out smaller vibrations by allowing a small amount of movement at the saddle, thereby keeping you feeling fresher for longer. That's the plan.

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - seta tube detail.jpg

How does it do it? Although the seat tube is fixed to the bottom bracket area in the normal way, it isn't moulded to the top tube or seatstays. Instead the tubes are joined by a pivot, allowing the seat tube to flex more than would otherwise be possible.

Front IsoSpeed is a more recent introduction, the idea being greater compliance at the handlebar. Front IsoSpeed comes in the form of a rocker cup at the top of the headset that allows the fork's carbon steerer to flex backwards/forwards, but not from side to side.

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - stem.jpg

Put another way, the upper section of the headset can tilt to take advantage of the inherent flex in the steerer, meaning the stem and handlebar can move slightly in response to rough roads. See? It's simpler than it sounds.

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - fork.jpg

Best of three

The Domane frameset comes in three different flavours. At the entry level there's the Domane AL, with an aluminium frame. This one doesn't feature front or rear IsoSpeed although, a little confusingly, Trek does describe the carbon fork as IsoSpeed on the basis that the legs are designed to absorb vibration. Complete bike prices start at £695, although the cheapest disc brake model is £895.

At the top of the range there's the posh Domane SLR, which comes with front and (adjustable) rear IsoSpeed. Bikes are priced from £6,600.

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - riding 5.jpg

In the middle you get the Domane SL bikes, which are made from a lower grade of carbon than the SLRs – Trek's 500 Series OCLV, rather than lighter and stiffer 700 Series OCLV. You get both front and rear IsoSpeed, neither of which is adjustable. That means you can't alter the setup according to the terrain but, on the other hand, it's simpler.

> road.cc Frameset of the Year 2020/21

The most accessible 2022 complete SL currently available is the Domane SL 6 eTap mentioned above, although the 2021 Domane SL4, with a mostly Shimano Tiagra groupset, is £2,325.

On the road

So the big question is: how much difference does the IsoSpeed technology make? Don't think that all this tech means the Domane SL feels unlike any other road bike you've ever ridden.

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - riding 6.jpg

First of all, if you've ridden mountain bikes with loads of travel, IsoSpeed is nothing like that. Not even on the same page. Cast all thoughts of mountain bike suspension from your mind.

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - fork detail 2.jpg

When you're riding on level, well-surfaced tarmac, IsoSpeed doesn't feel unusual at all, and even over rough roads it's subtle. In some ways it feels like running wide tyres at fairly low pressures... though in other ways it doesn't feel at all like that (I'll explain in a mo).

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - seat tube junction 2.jpg

You get just a bit of movement to insulate you from what's going on beneath your wheels, and it's more noticeable at the saddle than the handlebar. Crack into a steep-edged pothole at warp speed and you still feel it – just slightly less than you otherwise would.

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - drop bar.jpg

The main feature, though, isn't the protection from the big hits, it's the smoothing you get from the smaller stuff: little holes, manhole covers, drains, frost damage, badly patched tarmac, kerbs on and off the cycle path... you know, all those things you constantly encounter on a typical ride.

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - bars 2.jpg

It would come in handy over cobbles too, although chances are you don't have too many of those around your way.

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - rear hub.jpg

Again, IsoSpeed doesn't eliminate bumps and vibrations from any of this stuff, it just turns it all down a few notches. It's forgiving. The rougher the surface, the bigger the difference IsoSpeed makes. It's great on old, scuffed up tarmac and it's also pretty active on gravel roads although, naturally, the tyres make a big difference here.

> 19 of the best 2021 gravel bikes & adventure road bikes

The Domane takes a maximum size of 700 x 38mm. It isn't designed as a gravel bike – and most people would prefer something a bit wider for full-on gravel – but it's brilliant for short cuts to link up two sections of tarmac, for instance, and if you fancy riding gravel on 38mm tyres, well, you can fill yer boots.

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - seat stays.jpg

I said above that IsoSpeed can feel like you have large, low pressure tyres – but not entirely. The big difference is that a big tyre can feel squishy and mushy when you put the power down, and that can be annoying on the road.

IsoSpeed doesn't feel like that at all. There's no extra bounce when you're out of the saddle, and no additional lateral movement. The front end tracks and steers well, with no nasty surprises when you bang it hard into a fast, downhill bend.

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - front hub.jpg

Speaking of surprises, the frame-integrated storage compartment is a natty addition. You flick a lever on the down tube – where the bottle cage attaches – to release a plate and access the space inside.

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - down tube.jpg

The cover has a multi-tool slot on the back, and Trek also offers a tool roll specifically designed to fit. It takes stuff like a CO2 canister and chuck, tyre levers, a spare tube, an emergency Snickers bar... you do carry an emergency Snickers bar, don't you?

Specialized does something similar on its Diverge gravel bikes, and while packing things in these cubbyholes is a bit of an art, it's a really handy addition for emergency essentials.

The Domane SL is relaxed by road bike standards. Trek calls it an endurance fit. I've been riding the 58cm model with a 54.8cm seat tube, a 56.7cm effective top tube, and a 19.5cm head tube. It's a tall bike with a 61.1cm stack height, while the reach is short at 38.0cm. That puts the stack/reach at 1.61 for this size.

Some people are going love how the ride position is more upright than a more speed-orientated bike's, such as Trek's Madone or Emonda, for instance, while others won't be down with it at all. It depends what you're after.

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - riding 2.jpg

Trek says the current generation Domane is much more aero than previously – courtesy of truncated airfoil tube profiles – but there's only so far you can tweak your position, and that's always going to be more significant when it comes to drag. Personally, I can't see typical Domane SL buyers being over-concerned with aerodynamics, although I guess it all helps.

The brake hoses are exposed only between the ends of the handlebar tape and the front end of the top tube, just behind the stem, where they duck inside via a removable plate. This ensures a clean look and keeps them out of the wind.

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - cable routing.jpg

As mentioned, the bike I've been riding has a SRAM Rival eTap AXS groupset so there are no shift cables/wires to worry about anyway, but if there were any, this is the only place you'll see those too.

Other features you need to know about include the adjustable seat mast that's particular to the Domane – held by an internal clamp accessed via a slot in the extended seatpost – and the T47 bottom bracket. Hooray for threaded BBs!

2021 Trek Domane SL Disc frameset - bottom bracket 2.jpg

Mudguards? You can fit 'em easily enough. You get threaded holes on the fork legs (filled with itty bitty grub screws when not required) and another beneath the fork crown. You get more at the bottom of the seatstays, and fairly discreet mountings for a chainstay/mudguard bridge towards the top.

The only real downside to the Domane SL is that it's not particularly light. Trek claims a frame weight of 1,365g while, as mentioned, this complete bike came in at 8.82kg (19.4lb). Okay, the SRAM Rival eTap AXS isn't a lightweight groupset, but then a few hundred grams on the frame doesn't affect the ride as much as some people would have you believe.

The money bit

There aren't many road bikes designed to smooth the ride quite like the Domane. The most obvious rival is the Specialized Roubaix, which has Future Shock front suspension – a spring in a cartridge above the head tube that allows movement of the stem and handlebar.

The top-end Specialized S-Works Roubaix Team frameset is £3,700, but comparing prices with the second-tier Domane SL is unfair. Trek's flagship Domane SLR frameset is £3,500, so there's not a great deal in it.

The Domane SL keeps you comfortable thanks to relaxed geometry, front and rear IsoSpeed tech, and the ability to take tyres up to a whopping (by road bike standards) 38mm wide. It's as versatile as it is smooth, and if you want to mix up the surfaces you ride on while retaining plenty of speed, the Domane SL is a strong option.

Smooth endurance bike with loads of tyre space and masses of versatility

road.cc test report

Make and model: Trek Domane SL Disc frameset

Size tested: 58cm

Tell us what the frameset is for, and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about the bike?

Trek says, "The lightweight Domane SL Disc Frame Set is built with 500 Series OCLV Carbon and includes road-smoothing Front and Rear IsoSpeed, so you can stay stronger for longer. This carbon endurance road frame is designed for flat-mount disc brakes, has a built-in storage compartment, and includes a headset and a Domane Disc full carbon fork."

Trek tells you everything you need to know about IsoSpeed over here: www.trekbikes.com/gb/en_GB/inside_trek/isospeed

Trek says, "IsoSpeed challenges the traditional design of a bicycle frame. Devoid of the more favoured approaches to the compliance quandary (such as suspension systems, elastomers or a vibration damper), IsoSpeed maintains the diamond-shaped frameset geometry but 'decouples" the seat tube from the top tube, allowing the seat tube to flex with the forces of the road. The result is a bike that moves with the road while maintaining the feel and efficiency of the traditional race bike design.

"One of the consistent pieces of feedback from riders that have enjoyed rear IsoSpeed was that even though they could plough unfazed through rougher roads than ever before, they could still feel the road shock through their arms from the front wheel. Our solution was to take everything that works from IsoSpeed and move it up the bike. The same technology that provides great compliance at the saddle now delivers compliance at the front end. Front IsoSpeed, located at the top of the headset, is captured in a rocker cup similar to rear IsoSpeed. This allows the steerer tube to flex, providing additional compliance at the front of the bike. The rocker cup of the upper steerer has zero lateral movement, allowing the bike to steer and handle with precision."

State the frame and fork material and method of construction

Frame: 500 Series OCLV Carbon, front and rear IsoSpeed, internal storage, tapered head tube, internal cable routing, 3S chain keeper, DuoTrap S-compatible, mudguard mounts, flat-mount disc, 142x12 mm thru-axle

Fork: Domane SL carbon, tapered carbon steerer, internal brake routing, mudguard mounts, flat-mount disc, 12x100 mm thru axle

Tell us about the build quality and finish of the frame and fork?

It's built to a very high standard.

Tell us about the geometry of the frame and fork?

Trek calls it an 'endurance fit,' and it's pretty relaxed by road bike standards.

How was the bike in terms of height and reach? How did it compare to other bikes of the same stated size?

It's taller and shorter than an equivalent Madone or Emonda, say, putting you in a considerably more upright position.

Riding the bike

Was the bike comfortable to ride? Tell us how you felt about the ride quality.

Yeah, this is what the Domane is all about. It feels very comfortable courtesy of the front and rear IsoSpeed, and the ability to fit tyres up to 38mm wide. The relaxed geometry takes the strain off your back and neck, too.

Did the bike feel stiff in the right places? Did any part of the bike feel too stiff or too flexible?

The IsoSpeed tech allows up/down movement, but doesn't affect the lateral stiffness of the bike.

How did the bike transfer power? Did it feel efficient?

It feels pretty efficient, yes.

Was there any toe-clip overlap with the front wheel? If so was it a problem?

My shoe just missed 30mm tyres; there's a small amount of overlap with larger tyres.

How would you describe the steering? Was it lively neutral or unresponsive? It's pretty neutral

Tell us some more about the handling. How did the bike feel overall? Did it do particular things well or badly?

This is a bike that's more about stability and ride quality than sharp handling.

This isn't especially focused on accelerating or sprinting.

Your summary

How does the price compare to that of similar products in the market, including ones recently tested on road.cc?

The most obvious comparison is with the Specialized Roubaix, which has Future Shock front suspension – a spring in a cartridge above the head tube that allows movement of the stem and handlebar.

Did you enjoy riding the bike? Yes

Would you consider buying the bike? If ride quality was my highest priority, definitely

Would you recommend the bike to a friend? Yes

Use this box to explain your overall score

The performance is very good. Although the price is higher than many other road bikes, it's very good when you consider the tech that features here.

£2,325 for a Tiagra equipped bike is having a laugh......

It's horses for courses. I had an SL5 disc with Vison 40mm carbon rims and 105 as standard a few years ago and tbh, it's a nice enough bike but I found it dull as dishwater...as did a couple of people I know who bought better and lesser versions of the same model year.

How upright are we talking? Can you still stretch yourself out riding the drops?

SaintClarence27 wrote: How upright are we talking? Can you still stretch yourself out riding the drops?

More than likely, provided you get the correct size.

The only way to answer that is to sit on one. A decent substitute is to compare the geometry to a model you're familiar with.

It's certainly taller, but not that much shorter than an Emonda say.

I have both and they're setup within a couple of mm of each other

Trek 200 Series Alpha Aluminium maximises strength whilst keeping weight to a minimum and the innovative invisible weld technology creates better connections at the critical tube junction points.

The key elements passed down from the top line carbon models focus on comfort and all-day rider efficiency. Trek's own IsoSpeed decoupler smooths out the road whilst the endurance geometry targets a stable and controlled rider position without compromising the race-edge, so you can ride harder for longer. The best aluminium road bikes 2024: top-rated alloy bikes

Our favourite alloy road bikes, as rated by BikeRadar's expert testers

Robyn Furtado / BikeRadar

Stan Portus

The best aluminium road bikes can rival bikes with carbon frames; aluminium remains a great material for making bicycle frames.

At the entry-level end of the road bike market, aluminium frames are almost ubiquitous. That's because, generally speaking, aluminium frames combine a desirable stiffness level with low overall weight and relatively cheap production costs.

Bikes such as the Triban RC120 and Vitus Razor Claris prove that a quality road bike can still be had for less than £500 . Bikes such as the Triban RC520 show that road bikes under £1,000 can compete with pricier machines, too, with great specs and features such as disc brakes , which are available on more and more budget bikes.

Spend a little more and the prevalence of aluminium thins out in favour of cheaper carbon fibre bikes.

However, aluminium bikes at this price point – roughly between £1,000 and £2,500 – still regularly offer considerably better value , and sometimes a better ride, than similarly priced carbon models.

Fans of the pro peloton may have seen alloy come and go as the material of choice for the world’s fastest racers, but that doesn't mean alloy frames have plateaued in terms of development.

Spend well into four figures and you'll get access to the likes of Cannondale's CAAD13 – a showcase for the latest aluminium tech and a bike that can fight it out with all but the absolute best carbon fibre machines.

That's enough of the background, now let's crack on with our pick of the best aluminium road bikes, from budget bargains to alloy superbikes.

Every bike here has been tested and reviewed by our team and, in order to be included in this list, a bike must have scored at least 4 out of 5 stars in our testing.

Best aluminium road bikes in 2024, as rated by our expert testers

Triban rc120.

Triban RC120 road bike from Decathlon

  • £399.99/$499/€450/AU$599 as tested
  • Our favourite entry-level road bike
  • Capable as a fast commuter

The Triban RC120 is the cheapest bike in this list and yet it is one that is fully deserving of its five-star rating.

The RC120 should be the go-to bike for roadies with a modest budget thanks to its superbly considered kit and impressive ride.

Whether you're looking for a companion on long days out or an urban commuter that can accept a rack and mudguards , the RC120 will do it without difficulty.

Cannondale CAAD13 Disc 105

Pack shot of the Cannondale CAAD13 Disc 105 road bike

  • £2,250/$2,300/€2,299/AU$3,499 as tested
  • Exciting ride quality

The Cannondale CAAD13 was released in 2019, with the brand revamping the previous CAAD12 to embody new trends, such as dropped seatstays, wider tyres and aerodynamics.

The bike comes equipped with a full Shimano 105 groupset (apart from Cannondale's own cranks), Cannondale finishing kit and wheels.

For the price, it isn't the best value, nor is it the lightest, but once you start riding it, all of that is swept away. It has accurate handling, a remarkably smooth ride and is a brilliant all-round performer. In fact, it gives many carbon bikes a run for their money.

Canyon Endurace AL Disc

Canyon Endurace AL 8.0 Disc

  • £1,649 as tested for Canyon Endurace AL 8.0 (closest model now Endurace 7, priced at £1,649)
  • Great specification
  • Powerful, all-weather braking

If you’re after an endurance road bike , the chances are you will already be aware of Canyon’s superb Endurace range, and this particular alloy model with disc brakes hits a real sweet spot in terms of value.

The complete Shimano disc groupset, tubeless-ready wheels and sorted own-brand finishing kit make for an enviable spec sheet, but it’s the composed comfort and ride characteristics that make this one of the best aluminium road bikes.

The 8.0 model with Ultegra we tested has been discontinued, but the £1,649 AL 7.0 model with 105 is very nearly as good – although it sees no cost-saving due to price rises.

Canyon Endurace AL 7.0

Canyon Endurace AL 7.0 road bike in red

  • £999/€1,100/AU$1,750 as tested
  • Class-leading spec sheet
  • Efficient yet comfortable frame

The second Endurace in this list is once again here thanks to its outstanding value and ride quality. It’s light at 8.4kg for a size medium and has the most impressive spec sheet in its class, although recent price increases mean it's not quite the bargain it used to be.

Component highlights include Shimano’s superb R7000 105 groupset and Fulcrum wheels (a change from last year's Mavics) with quality Continental tyres.

We had to dig pretty deep in order to criticise this rim-brake model, but not everyone will appreciate its understated looks.

Giant Contend 1

Giant Contend 1 road bike

  • £999/€1,150 as tested
  • Great quality frameset that's comfortable and handles well
  • Comfy 28mm tubeless-ready tyres

The Giant Contend impressed us a lot during testing and we rated its rewarding ride and slick components package. The aluminium frame is neatly welded and there's an all-carbon fork and Giant's D-shaped seatpost, which is claimed to reduce road vibration transmitted to the saddle.

The Contend 1 is fitted out with Shimano Sora 9-speed groupset, with ratios down to 1:1. Tektro rim brakes. Tubeless-ready Giant wheels and 28mm tyres are other spec highlights.

The front and rear mudguard fittings and rack compatibility make this ideal as a commuter bike too.

We've also reviewed the 2020 Giant Contend SL1 , with a lighter SL version of the Contend frameset.

Rose Pro SL Disc 105

Rose Pro SL Disc 105

  • €1,749 (not currently available in UK)
  • Updated version of one of our favourite all-rounders
  • Lovely frameset and great spec for the money

Rose's affordable alloy all-rounder received an update in 2020, with a move to integrated cabling and tweaks to the frame and fork that include a very tidy new seat clamp.

Although prices have crept up slightly, it remains a top choice, with a really solid Shimano 105 spec and a thoroughly likeable ride quality.

Unfortunately, Rose has withdrawn from the UK market for the moment , but the bike is available elsewhere in the world.

Triban RC120 Disc

Triban RC120 disc

  • £400/€500 as tested
  • Great for longer rides
  • A little on the hefty side

Just five years ago, it would have been difficult to fathom that a bicycle as well equipped as this Triban RC120 Disc would be available for such a modest outlay. The geometry of the alloy frame sides towards endurance, making this a great choice for longer rides.

Spec highlights include a carbon fork, tubeless-ready wheels with 28mm tyres, and mechanical disc brakes – it really is superb value for money.

Don’t worry about the Microshift gears either, we were pleasantly surprised by them. The compromise comes in the form of weight, with a size medium example weighing a portly 11.3kg.

Triban RC520 Disc

Triban RC 520 Disc road bike in navy blue

  • Exceptionally well equipped
  • For those who favour comfort over speed

The RC520 Disc astonishes in terms of value with its carbon fork, mostly Shimano 105 drivetrain and TRP's mechanically actuated hydraulic disc brakes.

The geometry is noticeably more relaxed than the likes of Specialized's Allez, meaning this is no racer, but it's an excellent choice for commuting, training or even as a touring bike .

The standard-fit 28mm rubber already makes for a plush ride, though there's room for up to 36mm tyres and the stock rims are also tubeless-ready should you want to open up gravel capabilities .

Carbon vs aluminium

There’s a temptation when reviewing premium alloy bikes to suggest they’re particularly good ‘for a metal bike’, the subtext being that we all know carbon is inherently better.

Carbon makes sense for high-performance bikes because it’s infinitely tunable. It lets designers target stiffness, strength and flexibility exactly where they want it by using different types and arrangements of fibres and clever layup methods.

Metal, by contrast, can be manipulated to a high degree, with elaborate butting, forming and heat-treatment techniques, but you can’t fundamentally alter the mechanical properties of the material with such ease, because it’s not a composite.

The latest premium aluminium bikes challenge conventionally held assumptions about working with metal, offering performance and specs that go head-to-head with similarly priced carbon.

While politics and the pandemic have conspired to ensure nothing feels as good value as it did a couple of years ago , the variety and sophistication of aluminium road bikes have never been better.

Boardman SLR 8.6

2021 Boardman SLR 8.6

  • £550 as tested
  • Tubeless-ready wheels
  • Plenty of comfort

We recognise Boardman’s SLR 8.6 as one of the best budget road bikes out there due to its lovely all-round ride and general practicality.

A notable spec highlight and something that’s still rare at this price point is the tubeless-ready wheelset. The gearing is taller than some of its competitors though, so you may find yourself out of the saddle sooner on the climbs.

The frame is easily good enough to justify significant component upgrades, making this a bike that can really develop with you. It's received some subtle updates and a new paintjob this year, as well as a slight drop in price.

Cannondale CAAD Optimo 1

Cannondale CAAD Optimo 1 road bike

  • £1,300/$1,305/€1,499 as tested
  • Reasonable weight
  • Well balanced

Despite originating from Cannondale's entry-level road bike range, the Optimo 1 is worthy of the CAAD designation, associated more closely with the brand's more illustrious models.

The classy alloy frameset is the highlight of the build, made up of mostly Shimano 105 components.

The Vittoria Zaffiro tyres feel fast-rolling and there are fittings for mudguards and a rear rack. Its rim braking works well, but restricts you to 25mm tyres.

Cube Axial WS Race

Cube Axial WS women's road bike

  • £1,749/€1,649 as tested
  • Quality Shimano 105 spec with hydraulic brakes
  • Lots of low gear range for hillier terrain

The Cube Axial is the women's version of the gender-neutral Attain, with Cube branding its Axial frame HPA, for High Performance Alloy.

The frame includes thru-axles for more precise wheel placement than quick releases. There are mudguard mounts and Cube sells mudguards designed specifically for the bike.

The spec includes a full Shimano 105 11-speed groupset, complete with its powerful hydraulic disc brakes, but the Axial range starts at around £1,000 for the lowest spec, fitted with Shimano Claris 8-speed.

The 28mm tyres measure up around 30mm although the Axial's tyre clearance isn't as generous as on some frames.

Despite the "Race" in the name, this is an endurance-focused aluminium road bike, with a more upright ride position.

Forme says the Monyash is designed for tarmac, light gravel and year-round endurance riding. It's kitted out with disc brakes on its thru-axle wheels, with space for 35mm tyres to support that versatility. Plus, you get three sets of bottle bosses as well as mudguard and rack mounts.

The 2 spec of the Monyash comes with a Shimano Claris 8-speed groupset and we rated the wheels, shod with quality Schwalbe One tyres, although we'd up their 25mm width for extra grip and comfort.

We enjoyed the Forme's smooth, confident and controlled ride over a variety of not-so-good road surfaces.

Kinesis 4S Disc

Kinesis 4S Disc

  • £1,850 as tested
  • A bike for all occasions
  • Supremely versatile

The 4S Disc from Kinesis does a great job of being a bike for all occasions, so if you’re willing to snub the n 1 phenomenon then this could be the buy for you.

Available in road and gravel build options, the road-going version we tested goes without the flared handlebar and wider tyres of its sibling.

Despite this, the 4S Disc is loads of fun and is incredibly versatile, and we know it can work for year-round commuting, training, touring or bikepacking . If you’re not feeling quite so pink, there’s a more subtle blue colour available.

Kinesis Aithein Disc

Pack shot of the Kinesis Aithen Disc road bike

  • £2,680 build as tested
  • Super-stiff frame
  • Great price

The Kinesis Aithein Disc is an uncomplicated aluminium road bike that uses only standard parts. This is something quite refreshing in a world of proprietary headsets, aerofoils and dropped seatstays.

Racy intentions are at the heart of the Aithein. Reflective of that is a pretty familiar race bike geometry , maximum tyre width of 28mm and no mounts for mudguards or accessories.

Out on the road, the bike's stiff frame means it is great at climbing and descending. The ride is reasonably smooth but certainly firm. If you're feeling strong, the Aithein will deliver an engaging ride that's undeniably fun.

Kinesis offers the Aithein as a frameset, but the build we tested with fitted Shimano Ultegra presented good value.

Pack shot of the Kinesis R1 road bike in white

  • £1,500 as tested
  • Versatile aluminium road bike designed for a 1× drivetrain
  • SRAM Apex drivetrain and optional mudguards

1× drivetrains haven't really caught on for the road, but their simplicity is appealing for a practical, all-weather bike.

The R1 is designed with 1× in mind and comes specced with SRAM Apex components. Thanks to an 11-42 cassette, the gear range is not lacking.

The R1 is a likeable and engaging ride that's well suited to putting in winter miles, particularly if you opt for the full mudguards upgrade.

  • Read our full Kinesis R1 review

Pack shot of the Kinesis R2 road bike

  • £1,680 as tested
  • Good to look at and ride
  • Dependable build

In making the R2, Kinesis hasn't tweaked much from its predecessor, the R1, except for adding another chainring on the front.

Even with a 2x drivetrain, the R2 is adept across most terrain, including light gravel, thanks to 32mm tyres and Alex rims, which are designed for cyclocross .

Weighing 10kg, the R2 is never going to fly up climbs. But with mounts for racks and mudguards, plus hydraulic disc brakes, it'll make an agile winter bike and it's zippy enough to ride all year round.

Specialized Allez Sprint Comp

2022 Specialized Allez Sprint Comp

  • £2,650/$3,000/€3,500/AU$4,200 as tested
  • Stiff frame with exemplary response
  • Ripe for a wheel and tyre upgrade

The Allez Sprint Comp borrows from Specialized's pro-level Tarmac SL7 , with the same geometry and aero tube profiles. Specialized also claims similar ride characteristics and it's a bike that you'd be hard-pressed to tell from a carbon frame.

The ride is a great mix of stiffness when pedalling with smoothness and there's a fast, exciting feel. It comes stock with 26mm tyres, but there's room in the frame for 32mm rubber.

The groupset is Shimano 105 with hydraulic disc brakes and a 52/36t chainset with 11-28t cassette, but you could fit a wider-range cassette if you preferred. The Allez Sprint Comp would benefit from a wheel and tyre upgrade though, and its weight isn't competitive with similarly priced carbon bikes.

Specialized Allez Sport

Specialized Allez Sport in Dove Grey sits on a country lane in front of a bright green verge.

  • £1,600/$1,800/€1,750/AU$2,500
  • Commuter-friendly
  • Nimble handling

Dispensing with rim brakes on the Allez Sport has enabled Specialized to increase tyre clearance to an impressive 35mm. When rolling on wider rubber, the Allez Sport remains comfortable on iffy surfaces.

Clearance decreases to 32mm with mudguards, for which it has mounts. You can also fit a rear rack, which makes the Allez Sport a great commuter or winter bike.

The endurance geometry puts you in a fairly relaxed riding position, but that's not to say the Allez Sport isn't fun to ride.

Trek Domane AL 2

Trek Domane AL 2 road bike

  • £775/$1,100/€792/AU$1,600 as tested
  • Impressive handling and spec for an entry-level bike
  • Generously specced

Although it's an entry-level aluminium road bike, you still get a carbon fork with front-end IsoSpeed on the trek Domane AL 2, a feature designed to increase bar comfort found on much more expensive Trek bikes.

There's external cabling: good for maintenance, less so for consistent shifting once it gets dirty.

Spec-wise, there's 8-speed Shimano Claris with a non-series chainset and no-name brakes, which proved fairly ineffective, even in the dry.

We were really impressed by the smooth ride and handling of the Domane, even on its 25mm tyres, although the wheels felt a little heavy. But with its mudguard and rack mounts, we reckon the Domane would make a great winter bike or commuter.

Trek Émonda ALR 5

Trek Émonda ALR 5 road bike

  • £2,325/$2,300/€2,499/AU$3,500 as tested
  • Up-to-date spec

The Trek Émonda ALR 5 proves that performance road bikes don't have to be made from carbon. In fact, the frameset weighs in only a fraction heavier than the carbon version, the Trek Émonda SL 5 Disc .

A compliant ride, trusty steering and the quality Shimano 105 R7000 groupset ensure the alloy Émonda is competitively priced.

However, sluggish tyres and leaden wheels take the gloss off the Émonda's performance.

Triban RC 500 Disc

Decathlon's Triban RC 500 Disc

  • £530 as tested
  • Confident all-weather stopping

The RC 500 Disc is one of the best sub-£600 disc-brake road bikes that we've tested. Naturally, the RC 500 carries a weight penalty over a rim-brake bike at this price, but the Shimano Sora transmission components it uses are still commonplace on bikes costing a lot more.

It provides an engaging, comfortable and reassuring ride that's ideal for commuting or general road riding.

Vitus Razor Claris

Pack shot of the Vitus Razor Claris road bike

  • £500 as tested
  • Comfortable 28mm tyres
  • Proven geometry

The Razor Claris from Chain Reaction Cycles’ own brand Vitus is a top value-first aluminium road bike or year-round training tool. Simplicity is key at this price point and Vitus didn’t stray from what it knows works well.

The alloy frame of the Razor inherited its dialled geometry from more expensive bikes in the Vitus line-up and the 28mm tyres it’s fitted with mean plenty of comfort.

The frame and carbon fork are ready to accept mudguards but not racks. Like other bikes at this price, it’s pretty weighty, but that’s par for the course.

Common misconceptions that surround aluminium/alloy bikes

Aluminium or alloy.

It can be misleading to call an aluminium alloy bike frame ‘alloy’. After all, steel, titanium and aluminium-frame bikes will be made from metals that are alloys.

Despite this, calling a bike with an aluminium frame an alloy bike is still considered the norm.

"Aluminium bikes are excessively stiff"

One common misconception that surrounds aluminium alloy frames is that they provide a ride character that is excessively stiff.

It's true that some early aluminium frames were brutally stiff, but those days of experimentation have long since passed.

In truth, a frame’s stiffness is dictated by far more than just the material it is made from, with sizing, tube shapes and material grade being some of the many other crucial variables.

Smooth-riding endurance bike with loads of tyre space and masses of versatility

Smooth ride

Jan 2021 · Dave Rome

Trek's new entry-level road bike combines an endurance fit with sporty handling and a whole bunch of versatility.

Huge tyre clearance, unique geometry is great for the purpose, quite comfortable ride quality, easy to service and upgrade, rides lighter than it feels to pick up, Shimano Tiagra just works, rim width, quality thru-axles.

Basic and heavy frame, making the bike tubeless requires new tyres and a handful of parts, extremely heavy wheels (especially given the bike’s price), handlebar drop shape is too compact.

"Trek’s best road bike gets faster, lighter, quicker, and better"

"When you get on a bike that is fast, quick, and communicative but also floats and coddles the rider like a newborn baby, well, that is a special bike. And that is what the new Domane is: Special. A great bike made better. A bike for the modern road rider: Freaking fast, wonderfully comfortable, and oh so practical."

"Smooth operator"

"The level of smoothness on the Domane continues to impress, creating an experience akin to being chauffered around in a luxury sedan. It absorbs all road vibrations, operates quietly, and accelerates on flats deceptively quickly…I'll be in for a rude awakening after returning to a road bike without IsoSpeed."

No image available

"Fast on all terrain"

"I took the Domane on my local gravel and some select chunky bits to see how it would fare. The most notable transition from road to gravel was the sense of ease. Usually, when you roll from tarmac to stones, the bike can feel skittish and nervous (rider or bike). The Domane feels stable, and instead of holding your breath, you breathe out."
