23. Ueno Tenjin Festival

Ueno Tenjin Festival

Not to be confused with Ueno in Tokyo, the Ueno Tenjin autumn festival is located at Sugawara Shrine in Iga City, Mie Prefecture. The UNESCO cultural heritage-listed festival takes place across three days and features nine hand-decorated wooden floats pulled through the city by ropes.

One of the most popular elements of the festival is the procession of demons, or Oni, which can be seen nowhere else in Japan. When the celebrations move into the evening, thousands of paper lanterns beautifully light up the floats as they pass the many stalls of crafts and seasonal foods that line the streets.

  • Where & When: Sugawara Shrine, Ueno Higashimachi, Iga City, October 20, 21 & 22.
  • Interesting Fact: As they move through the streets, the demons stagger toward children to make them cry. According to legend, the children who cry will grow up in good health, so parents often move their children in front of the demons’ path hoping to be seen.

Highlights of Our Unforgettable 2023 Japan Autumn Tours

We’re excited to share the highlights of our unforgettable 2023 Japan autumn tours. We had a great time with our guests, exploring Japan’s rich cultural heritage. The weather was perfect, and the fall foliage was beautiful. Take a look at these snapshots capturing the essence of our small group tours.

2023 Japan Autumn Tours

We travel with all of our guests, offering assistance whenever needed. As Americans who know Japan, understand its culture, and speak the language, we make sure that every detail is taken care of, from selecting top-notch hotels to finding the best routes and discovering hidden gems. Click here to see our small group Japan tours.

All of our 2023 Japan autumn tours started in Tokyo , with a visit to the Tsukiji outer fish market. It’s been a bustling hub of food vendors, shops, and restaurants since the early 20th century. The outer market offers an array of seafood, produce, and Japanese delicacies in a vibrant atmosphere.

Next, we headed over to Senso-ji in Asakusa. Founded in the 7th century, it is believed to be Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple. Then we ended the evening with a fun, hands-on Japanese cooking class.

On our 15-day tours, we visited Kamakura and Nikko. Kamakura is home to the Great Buddha (Daibutsu), a giant bronze statue located at Kotoku-in Temple.

Nikko is renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The most famous being Toshogu Shrine, the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu.

With our Highlights and Discover tours, we went to one of the Fuji Five Lakes to see Mt. Fuji, providing breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences for our tour participants.

We were fortunate enough to have beautiful weather the day we visited the Hakone Open-Air Museum with our October 15-day tour participants. This outdoor art museum was founded in 1969 and has a large collection of pieces by renowned artists such as Henry Moore and Pablo Picasso.

Another favorite with our guests is Nagoya . The fourth-largest city in Japan, Nagoya tends to fly under the radar of most tourists. The city was originally established as a castle town in 1612, just before the beginning of the Edo period.

The Nagoya of today is modern and sophisticated. It’s a big hit with visitors because of its easy access, amazing shopping, and great dinning. It offers the big-city feel, with a small-town crowd.

Inuyama Castle

We also visited Inuyama Castle on our September 8-day and October 10-day tours. Inuyama Castle is one of the country’s oldest surviving castles, dating back to the 15th century.

We explored the mountain village of Takayama with our September 8-day Intro to Japan Tour and October 10-day Highlights of Japan Tour . We visited an Edo-era house, tasted sake at a 300-year-old brewery, and ate some famous Hida Wagyu beef on sticks.

Nagano and Kanazawa left a lasting impression on our November 15-day Discover Japan Tour guests. Kanazawa is known for its rich cultural heritage, gold leaf craftsmanship, and traditional arts. While there, we visited Kenrokuen Garden, believed to be one of Japan’s three most beautiful landscape gardens.

Zenkoji Temple

Nagano is well known for its 7th century temple, Zenkoji. It’s one of Japan’s most important and revered Buddhist temples. Every day, the monks perform a morning ceremony at sunrise with the chanting of sutras and prayers for health, happiness, prosperity, and spiritual well-being.

Matsumoto Castle

We visited Matsumoto Castle on our September 10-day tour and our November 15-day tour. Built in the 16th century, this castle is known for its black exterior and unique architectural design.

Kyoto is always a stop on our Japan autumn tours. We visited Ryoanji, Kinkakuji, Fushimi Inari, and Kiyomizu temple. This ancient capital city consistently ranks high with all of our guests.

Private Geisha Dinner

While in Kyoto, we enjoyed a private Kaiseki dinner experience with a Geisha. We enjoyed speaking one-on-one with a Maiko, watched her graceful performances, and played traditional games. The evening gave our guests an authentic glimpse into Kyoto’s cultural traditions and hospitality.

Himeji Castle

Our October 15-day Discover Japan Tour explored the iconic feudal-era Himeji Castle . It’s renowned for its bright white exterior, its intricate defensive structures, and beautiful strolling garden.

We made our way down to Hiroshima with our 15-day Discover tours. While there, we visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum and the Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island.

Join One of Our Japan Autumn Tours

It’s always fun showing our tour guests the very best of Japan. If you’d like to experience Japan the way the locals do, we invite you to join one of our exclusive Japan small group tours . Do more than just see Japan, be a part of it with a Japan and more tour.

Land of the Rising Sun

Welcome to Japan! This is a land of intriguing contradictions. Japan is an archipelago made up of more than 6,800 islands with three quarters of the land being either forest or mountains, leaving little for residential, industrial, or farming areas. Yet it is densely populated for its size. Its leaders have ranged from the samurai to the shogun to the emperor. Its highest point – Mt. Fuji – is beautiful and sacred, as are its many temples and shrines. Its capital city – Tokyo – is a bustling metropolis containing anything one might desire, from food to entertainment to art and culture. Kyoto is filled with serene religious buildings and glorious gardens. A Japan trip awaits with open arms!

Japan ms1

Until the 19th century, Tokyo was known as Edo. It started out as a fishing village but grew to become the seat of a feudal government in the early 17th century. Emperor Meiji moved the capital from Kyoto to Edo in 1868 and renamed it Tokyo, or “Eastern Capital.” By then it had become one of the world’s most populous cities. After World War II it was completely rebuilt. Today, Tokyo is more than just a large city – it is a metropolis with 23 wards. Learn all about the city’s fascinating history and culture through artwork and antiques in Tokyo’s National Museum. Travelers dive even deeper into Tokyo’s ancient roots with a visit to the Zojoji Temple, the center of Japanese Buddhism. From the Ginza district to the Sumida River there’s something for everyone in Tokyo.

Japan ms2

Kyoto was home to the emperor from 794 to 1868. It was Japan’s political and cultural center for 1,100 years, until the capital was moved to Tokyo. Kyoto was largely spared from damaging air raids of World War II and numerous temples, shrines, castles, and palaces are still standing today. Among them is the Golden Pavilion, a Zen temple whose top two stories are completely covered in gold leaf. Once the lavish retirement home of a shogun (military dictator), it was converted to a Zen temple in the 1400s. It has survived wars, been rebuilt after fires, and still stands as an impressive piece of historic architecture. Nijo Castle, another impressive monument, was built in 1603 as the residence of Tokugawa leyasu – the first shogun of the Edo Period. Kyoto is also well-known for Gion – its most famous Geisha district where you may be lucky enough to see a woman dressed in full, traditional geisha regalia.

Japan ms3

Hiroshima will forever be remembered for the devastating event of August 6, 1945: the dropping of the first atomic bomb. Nearly everything within a mile of where the bomb fell was destroyed, and some 80,000 people perished. There were predictions that the city would no longer be habitable. Today, Hiroshima has been rebuilt and a large park was constructed, containing several memorials to the victims. The Peace Memorial Museum focuses on the dropping of the bomb and its aftermath; the Atomic Bomb Dome was one of the few buildings to remain standing afterward; and the Memorial Cenotaph is an arched tomb for those who died. Also worth a visit is Hiroshima Castle. Originally built in 1589, it was five stories tall and was surrounded by a moat. It was destroyed in 1945, rebuilt in 1958, and is now a museum featuring Samurai culture.

Japan ms4

Takayama means “tall mountain,” and is a city in the mountainous Hida region. During the feudal ages, it became known for its high-quality timber and skilled carpenters. Yet it was kept fairly isolated due to the surrounding mountains. Today it is known for its well-preserved old town. The Hida-Kokubunji Temple is the oldest structure, originally built in 746. It features a huge ginko tree, said to be 1,200 years old, and a three-storied pagoda. The Hida no Sato Folk Village, with its traditional wooden farm houses, is an open-air museum. There are also two morning markets, or Asaichi, held on a daily basis, as well as sake breweries. It is the perfect place for a walk.

Destination Must-Do's

Japan md1

Japanese Cuisine:

No trip to Japan would be complete without experiencing its flavorful dishes. A bowl of gohan, or cooked rice, is a central part of Japanese meals. From there we go to sushi, famous both outside of and inside Japan. Sushi is made from cold boiled rice, moistened by vinegar and typically combined with seafood and vegetables. Sashimi is thinly sliced raw food – most often seafood. (Japan is an island, after all.) The most popular noodles are soba (buckwheat flour), udon (wheat flour), and ramen, a noodle soup dish. Tempura is lightly battered, deep-fried seafood and vegetables. Yakatori refers to grilled chicken skewers you can try at a yakitori-ya. Be sure to enjoy green tea with your meal, as the Japanese do.

Japan md2

The Tokyo Skytree:

The Tokyo Skytree is the perfect way to get a panoramic view of the city and beyond. A television broadcasting tower, this Tokyo landmark is almost 1,200 feet high and is the tallest structure in Japan. A large shopping complex and an aquarium are at its base, but it’s the two observation decks that warrant a visit. Head to the “world’s highest skywalk” for views that will take your breath away!

Japan md3

Temples and Shrines:

Temples and shrines are found all over Japan, with most municipalities having at least one temple. (Kyoto has 1,200.) Temples are Buddhist places of worship, and they store and display sacred objects. They typically consist of a main hall, a lecture hall, a pagoda, gates, bells, and a cemetery. Some were monasteries in the past, and some still are. Shrines are Shinto places of worship. They are the dwellings of the kami, or Shinto gods. Sacred objects are stored in the innermost chamber, and are not to be seen by anyone. People visit shrines to pay respect to the kami, or to pray for good fortune. The approach to the shrine is marked by Torii gates; the komainu, a pair of guardian dogs or lions, is found on each side of the shrine’s entrance.

Japan md4

Hakone has been a hot springs resort for centuries. There are more than a dozen hot springs, with Yumoto being the most famous. There is much natural beauty to be appreciated here. Lake Ashinoko, or Lake Ashi, was formed in a volcanic caldera after an eruption 3,000 years ago; it is the perfect place for a scenic boat ride with views of Mt. Fuji. The Hakone Shrine, on the shores of Lake Ashi, is Hakone’s most famous Shinto shrine. Three striking Torii gates mark the approach to the shrine. Odawaro Castle is the closest castle to Tokyo, some 60 miles away. Originally built in the 15th century, it has been rebuilt twice since then. Hakone remains a popular destination for the Japanese and tourists alike.

"Japan is one of the most captivating places on earth, where you can go from Tokyo's flashy streets to the snowy peak of Mount Fuji or a traditional ryokan in a day."

Travel Director

Admire the snow-capped Mount Fuji

See the towering peak of Mount Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan and a UNESCO-listed site. We’ll take you up to the 5th station of Mount Fuji, a spectacular vantage point at 2,300 metres, before taking a ride on the Kachikachiyama Ropeway with views of Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi.

Take a high-speed bullet train to Kyoto

Board the high-speed bullet train to Kyoto, the former capital of Japan and the ancient epicentre of Japanese culture. After whizzing through the country, you’ll meet the locals at a traditional ryokan and learn about traditional Japanese customs, then explore the Gion District and glittering Kinkakuji Temple, the symbol of Kyoto.

Experience a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony

We’ll introduce you to a professional Tea Master who has spent many years learning the craft of the tea ceremony. You’ll learn about the history of Japanese tea making, and watch how the matcha is prepared with a bamboo whisk. You’ll even have a go at making (and tasting) your own tea.

Admire Osaka from the Floating Garden Observatory

The Floating Garden Observatory is an open-air viewing platform, stretching between the two towers of the Umeda Sky Building. We’ll take you to the top of the 173-metre buildings for panoramic views over Osaka, including the city’s dazzling rivers, bridges and soaring skyscrapers.

Wander through Ameyoko Street Market

With nearly 200 shops selling everything from fresh fish and spices to clothing and bags, you can spend hours roaming through Ameyoko Street Market. Located in Tokyo along the Yamanote Line tracks, it was once a black market selling American goods and sweets after WWII, when sugar was hard to find.

Our top 5 things to do in Japan

Our Japan tours take you from the dizzying heights of Mount Fuji and the bustle of the Ameyoko Market, to the tranquility of a Japanese tea ceremony.

Tokyo National Museum

The largest and oldest museum in Japan, Tokyo National Museum holds one of the world’s best collections of art and archaeological artefacts from Asia. There are over 110,000 items, including 87 National Treasures of Japan, and you can find everything from art along the Silk Road to medieval Japanese art.

Kotokuin Temple

Located in the city of Kamakuru, the Kotokuin Temple is a Japanese Buddhist temple of the Jodo sect. It’s home to the ‘Great Buddha’ or ‘Daibutsu’, an 11.4-metre bronze statue of Amida Buddha, constructed in 1252. The towering statue is a National Treasure and one of the most iconic sights in Japan.

Sensoji Buddhist Temple

One of the most famous temples in Japan, the Sensoji Buddhist Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo. It was originally built in 628 but was rebuilt after being destroyed in WWII. Today, you’ll find a beautiful five-storey pagoda, woven with incense and crimson eaves.

Best museums in Japan

A Japan tour package with Trafalgar takes you through the country’s top museums, from one of the world’s best collections of Asian art, to the ornate temples of Tokyo.

Although sushi is now a popular dish around the world, you’ve never really tried it until you’ve eaten the best in Japan. Our Local Specialists will help you navigate the endless varieties of this iconic dish, from raw vegetables to fresh fish wrapped in rice and seaweed.

Hida beef comes from a Japanese breed of black-haired cattle raised in the fresh air and pure water of Gifu Prefecture. Hailed as the best beef in Japan, we’ll take you to the top restaurants to try one of the beautifully tender and marbled Hida beef steaks.

A beloved dish found all over the country, ramen is a delicious Japanese noodle soup. Each region has a different variation and it usually involves a tasty pork or chicken broth, seasoned with plenty of rich flavours like miso, soy sauce and spring onions.

Best food in Japan

A Japan group tour with Trafalgar will have you indulging in the country’s fantastic cuisine, from fresh sushi to piping hot ramen.

What to pack for Japan

People packing for a tour

Adaptor plug

In Japan, the standard voltage is 100 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type A and B. The standard frequency is 50 / 60 Hz.

Comfortable sandals

Japanese culture requires you to take off your shoes when entering traditional restaurants, temples and ryokans. Bring a comfortable pair of sandals so you can easily slip them off all day.

Japanese phrasebook

Learning a few Japanese phrases will help you connect with the friendly Japanese locals, and offers the chance for some rewarding interactions.

Most shops and restaurants in Japan primarily accept cash, so it’s best to come prepared with some Japanese yen for your trip.

Versatile clothing

Japan’s weather ranges hot and humid to freezing cold, with mild springs in between. Pack versatile layers to be prepared for all conditions on your Japan holiday.

GUIDE Japan in October

  • Japan in October

The very best of autumn

With typhoon season largely over by the end of September, October offers some of Japan's fairest and most comfortable weather. It's a time of harvest and harvest festivals, outdoor excursions, autumnal hikes and art and culture.

Know Before You Go

  • Art galleries and museums typically get quite busy in October
  • Autumn leaves hit their peak during October in more northerly and higher altitude locations
  • Japan has adopted Halloween and you can find events and parties held in most big cities
  • Do your research and pack appropriately—Kyushu can still be quite warm in October while Tohoku can become very chilly

A taste of autumn

Prime harvest time, food tastes great in October, from Japanese pears and persimmon fruit to rice, soba noodles and sake. Niigata, a top-sake and rice producing region, is a great place to sample some of the seasonal sake varieties and even catch a glimpse of the rice harvest in action.

Art and culture

For something a little less active, visit one of the many leading art galleries or museums throughout the country. Autumn is traditionally considered the time for the arts in Japan, and many of the biggest and best exhibitions begin in October.

Premium Japan Tour

Premium Japan

We had an amazing holiday. Japan was all we had hoped for. The group worked so well, we all got on and became good friends. Shingo, our guide was totally great. He was so pleasant and helpful. His English not brilliant but he did a great job. We felt maybe a little more information on places and sights might have been good. He was constantly helping us all and looking after us. He made great suggestions for meals and always checked up on us all, even when we split into smaller groups for the evening. He went way beyond what he could have done and made everyone feel safe and well looked after. He even helped booking all our onward travel and ensured we were all ok on the day. Wonderful man!! The hotels were nice, if a little small with almost no storage in most of them! Breakfasts were generally very good. We saw and did so much. In fact, we felt sometimes it was a little too much to fit into each day, and either missed some things out or were too rushed, missing stopping and looking at leisure at things and shops etc. Shingo was so patient, even when we caused him to run a little late! Due to distances covered we spent a lot of time travelling which was an interesting experience. Just meant time at destinations was a little short. As Most of us were older we all felt very tired at the end of each day and struggled especially when we had to carry back packs whilst waiting to be reunited with luggage. Dont know what the answer is, if extra days added, then expense goes up. If itinerary cut back, then Interesting sights missed out! Overall, a truly great trip. We enjoyed it all!

Contrasts of Japan end Tokyo Tour

Contrasts of Japan end Tokyo

If you are worried about hotel accomodations, don't worry. They were excellent. Hilton in Hiroshima for example. Even the Mount Fuji traditional style hotel was beautiful and we got to do the tatami mat style room. It was very nice. The county is safe. Go for walks, find the seven eleven, or equivalent, when you get to each hotel. Our guide, Paco's did an excellent job dealing with any issues that came up and navigating a couple of languages along the way. The visits at various destinations are not as thorough as you might get travelling in your win, with your own schedule, but this is a tour and they give plenty of time for most destinations. Some days it is rainy and that's just the way it is, but in our case the day opened up at Mount Fuji and we were able to experience everything. Come prepared to work out with the group, be in time in the morning, and understand that as they introduce you to new foods, you might have to hit a seven eleven for a picky child (or adult). This tour was just absolutely amazing. Be sure to do your own research as far as travel documentation. You need to do Japan Web website for covid, immigration, and customs. If you do it's smooth entry into Japan. Also, for Americans your passport only has to be valid throughout your visit. It does not have to be good 6 months beyond. That was a misunderstanding by the tour agents that I had to clarify with them. They tried to say my son's passport needed renewal because it would expire in five months. While that is true if you travel to or through other Asian nations, direct from USA to Japan it's okay. If course that could change so do your research or get an agent to help you. Otherwise just make sure you have everything handled on your own. They cannot deal with passport issues etc. Ask for Paco to be your guide. He's awesome! Also, get a SAICO or PayPal IC card. A wallet card. It's useful throughout the country. Get local currency before you leave the country or at the airport in Japan. This is the trip of a lifetime.

Epic 13-Day Japan Budget Tour: Odyssey Across the Land of the Rising Sun Tour

Epic 13-Day Japan Budget Tour: Odyssey Across the Land of the Rising Sun

The guide was very nice, he does walk fast though. There is a LOT of walking. The only shoes you will need are either a good pair of trainers or dare I say I even almost wished I bought my hiking boots a couple of times. I like the fact he acknowledges some people will have different interests for things to do outside of included activities and different food budgets. Price is quite fair for the inclusions although yes you are paying a premium for the group tour, remember that, I found the price fairer than some other international companies I've used in the past who I won't name. You end up doing things you might not have thought of as well Dragon trip attracts a good crowd. There's a good mix of free time and included activities. I recommend you book some optional activities available in Kyoto in particular in advance though. It is in hostels so prepare for that unless you want your own room, which I suggest if possible. There was only one hostel I really was not a fan of at all (Kyoto), the rest of the accommodation was fantastic. The arcade was fun, bike riding was good. I liked the ninja/samurai tour. I think just the itinerary needs to be a bit clearer and giving everyone just an extra $10 on the pasmo card would have made a world of difference or just tell us to buy our own card once in osaka. Also might want to look into: Apparently the jr price has gone up recently and might outweigh booking jr trips separately. Book some extra days maybe in tokyo for yourself at the end if you can otherwise book a flight after 6.30pm on the last day since you may as well use jr to get back to tokyo. I kind of stuffed up my own planning with that one.

Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka

The tour with David as our tour guide was very personalised for 2 reasons , 1 David said normally the tour would have up to 40 people the start of the tour in Tokyo their were 5 people , on the Kyoto Osaka part we were joined by by 6 then 4 respectively , David was exceptional over & above , in his time off in Tokyo I had left some Ice packs at home for my insulin we went to 4 places to find some & I also needed to buy a guitar to send to someone for the next part of my Japan solo experience, Francisco very good as well , the main improvement would be that we didn’t get a Sushi or a traditional Japanese selection meal or a small glass of Saki , I know with time constraints I would have liked to have seen more of Osaka , the Hotel accommodation was excellent thanks Roger Evans

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Japan

The guide was the best
Japan was so fun! A looooooot of free time so do you researches about what to do and visit in every city. Would have love more ''organised'' activities (like a dinner every night with the group,...). Compared to other G Adventures tour I did in the past, I felt that this group was less stick together since there was only a few group activities.

10 Best Festivals in Japan in October 2023

Nagasaki kunchi festival

She jumped into the niche of Dutch tour guiding in Tokyo and Kamakura in 2015 and occasionally writes articles about all the great sights and activities Japan has to offer. When the hottest days are behind us and the fall season brings along pleasant weather, this is a good time to travel to Japan . And while traditional Japanese festivals – or matsuri – are often held during summer , many of these vibrant events take place later in the year as well. In fact, some of the most interesting festivals are held in October throughout the country. Here’s a list of Japan’s 10 best festivals in October 2023!

1. Takayama Festival (Gifu Prefecture)

2. matsue suitoro festival (shimane prefecture), 3. asama onsen taimatsu festival (nagano prefecture), 4. kurama fire festival (kyoto prefecture), 5. tamagawa fireworks festival (tokyo prefecture), 6. otsu festival (shiga prefecture), 7. nagasaki kunchi festival (nagasaki prefecture), 8. shinminato hikiyama festival (toyama prefecture), 9. nihonmatsu lantern festival (fukushima prefecture), 10. kanuma autumn festival (tochigi prefecture), japan wonder travel tours , other articles you might be interested in.

Takayama matsuri

In Takayama of Gifu prefecture , two major festivals are held each year, one in spring and one in autumn. The Takayama Festival held in October revolves around the Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine, and throughout the day and evening, beautiful floats are paraded through the streets in the northern part of this charming town. The evening festivities are considered the highlight by most visitors with the large floats beautifully lit up. If you happen to be in Takayama outside the festival period you still have a chance to see the floats on display in the Yatai Kaikan Museum.

When: October 9 – 10

Admission: free

How to get there: About 15-minute walk from Takayama Station

Matsue Suitoro Matsuri

Meaning ‘Water Lantern Festival’, the Matsue Suitoro Festival is a bit different from usual matsuri as the waterways in the canal-rich castle town of Matsue are beautifully lit up during October evenings on weekends and national holidays . Creating a stunningly romantic atmosphere in Shiomi Nawate Street, designated as one of the 100 most beautiful streets in Japan, the festival draws people from all over the region to admire the scenery. You can also take an idyllic cruise along the canals and make your own lantern on the grounds of Matsue Castle .

When: September 23 – October 15(weekends and national holidays only)

How to get there: About 25 minute walk from Matsue Station

Taimatsu Matsuri

One of the most popular yearly events in the castle town of Matsumoto is the Asama Onsen Taimatsu Festival where people walk down the streets while reciting mantras. The most spectacular part of this lively festival occurs after dark when bales of hay are set on fire and rolled through the streets, culminating with a big bonfire. This also explains the name of the festival as ‘taimatsu’ means ‘large burning torch’. More than 100 bales of hay are burned during this event, and people smear the soot and ashes on their own and each other’s faces. With this fiery ritual, the people of Asama Onsen pray for peace and an abundant rice harvest.

When: October 14

How to get there: About 30 minutes’ bus ride from Matsumoto Station to Yokote Bus Station

Big stationary torch

Deep in the forests of northern Kyoto , not far from Kibune , the normally dark night lights up with the bonfires of the energetic Kurama Fire Festival. Held to welcome the spirit of a god called Yuki Myojin – who settled in Kurama more than 1000 years ago – to his new home, big bonfires light the way to the shrine, and villagers carry big and small torches up a steep path. The festival culminates with a mikoshi (portable shrine) parade.

When: October 22 (6pm-11pm, we recommend you arrive early)

How to get there: About a 3 minute walk from Kurama Station on the Eizan Kurama Railway

Tamagawa Fireworks

One of the largest firework festivals in Tokyo , the Tamagawa Fireworks Festival is a pyrotechnical spectacle. Taking place in one of Tokyo’s most family-friendly neighborhoods, this festival is very popular, and arriving early to secure a good spot is paramount for the best viewing experience. Make it a fun day out with tasty festival foods and bring a comfortable mat to sit on!

When: October 21 around 6pm-7pm

How to get there: About 3 minutes’ walk from Futakotamagawa Station on the Denentoshi Line

Festival float

This 2-day festival has a history of more than 400 years and takes place in Otsu where you can admire 13 large lantern floats featuring creative mechanical puppets on the festival’s first day. On the second day, the floats are paraded around town accompanied by music and dance. There are many food stalls scattered around the festival area and this vibrant matsuri is one of Shiga Prefecture’s biggest events.

When: October 7 and 8

How to get there: About 10 minutes walk from Otsu Station

Nagasaki Kunchi Festival

Boasting a lively carnivalesque atmosphere, the Nagasaki Kunchi Festival in Nagasaki prefecture has been celebrating the city’s multicultural history for more than 400 years. There are energetic dances, floats featuring dragons and lions, and Dutch and Chinese ships symbolizing the trade with foreign countries during the Edo period when only people from the Netherlands and China were allowed to trade with Japan. The festival’s focal points are Suwa Shrine, the Otabijo Stage, Yasaka Shrine, and the Kokaidomae Plaza. Be prepared for large crowds as nearly all residents of Nagasaki plus many visitors from other regions flock to this festival every year to join in on the fun.

When: October 7-9

How to get there: About 5 minutes’ walk from Nagasaki Station

Float with lanterns

In Izumi City, Toyama Prefecture , the Shinminato Hikiyama Festival is one of Hosotsu Hachimangu Shrine’s autumn festivals. 13 impressive floats are decorated with flowers during the day and adorned with lanterns at night, and the sight of them being pulled through the town is both gorgeous and spectacular. Although it’s unknown when the first Shinminato Hikiyama Festival was held, the largest floats were created in 1650. The breathtaking sight of the 13 floats being paraded down narrow streets and around sharp corners accompanied by the distinctive call “Iyasama, Iyasama!” is one of the highlights of the festivals.

When: October 1

How to get there: About 3 minutes’ walk from Nishi-Shinminato Station on the Manyosen Shinminatoko Line

Red paper lanterns

One of the top 3 lantern festivals in Japan, the Nihonmatsu Lantern Festival is a sight to behold. First held more than 370 years ago, the festival was created by the lord ruling over the area at the time who wanted to forge a bond with and between the locals through religion by throwing a Shinto festival that everyone could attend. With a feverish passion, 7 tall festival floats lit up with dozens of candles inside red lanterns are carried through the streets of Nihonmatsu, Fukushima Prefecture . The teams of carriers, steerers, and musicians work together to safely run the floats through the streets while enthusiastic onlookers cheer with them. It’s easy to get carried away with them in the contagiously fun atmosphere!

When: October 7-9

How to get there: About 2 minutes’ walk from Nihonmatsu Station

Kanuma festival float

Only 90 minutes north of Tokyo, in Tochigi Prefecture , the town of Kanuma erupts in a cheerful festival mood for one weekend every October. Originally held to thank the gods for bringing rain after a long period of drought, the locals have kept this festival tradition going for more than 400 years. 27 stunning floats carved and maintained by local artisans are paraded through town and turned into stages for the festival’s musicians. When two stages meet during the parade, the bands will start a musical play-off, bringing much delight to the spectators.

How to get there: About 10 minutes walk from Shin-Kanuma Station on the Tobu-Nikko Railway

October is one of the best times to visit Japan, not only because you can see exciting traditional festivals like the ones listed above, but also because the weather is often quite pleasant and you can still enjoy watersports at many beachside destinations .
