The Best Alaska Cruise Excursions

A cruise to Alaska is one of the best ways to visit many parts of the 49th state, including the Inside Passage and the southeastern port towns of Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway. You can also see dozens of glaciers on a cruise, plus remote places reachable only by water, like Glacier National Park & Preserve. Traveling by ship allows you to get closer to one-of-a-kind experiences in Alaska's interior, especially if you extend your vacation with a cruisetour (a package that includes the cruise and a land portion either before or after your voyage).

When it comes to excursions, many cruise lines offer the same experiences ashore for larger ports of call, often with a slight variation in the itinerary. The most popular tours highlight the best activities and attractions, such as the Mendenhall Glacier Ice Adventure Tour in Juneau, the Misty Fjords National Monument in Ketchikan and the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway in Skagway. You'll also find entertaining offerings from cruise lines that call on smaller, less visited ports, like Icy Strait Point (Hoonah), Sitka, Seward and Haines.

While some tours cost less than $100, don't be surprised to find over-the-top experiences that run about $750 per person – such as heli-flightseeing tours, where you'll land on a glacier and go dog-sledding with a team of Alaskan huskies. If you're comfortable with going it on your own, you might find lower prices on some excursions by booking directly with tour operators. Alaskan outfitters are used to working around cruise ship arrival and departure times, so their tours tend to fit into those schedules.

U.S. News has compiled this list to help you find the best Alaska cruise excursions, from the most popular (and affordable) options to once-in-a-lifetime adventures.

Icy Strait Point (Hoonah)

Even though it's surrounded by water and mountains – and there's no road into town – Juneau is one of the most visited ports in Alaska, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors each summer. You'll find plenty to do in Alaska's capital, including whale watching tours, salmon bakes and more.

Mendenhall Glacier

View of Mendenhall Glacier.

The Mendenhall Glacier is one of the top attractions in Juneau, so many tours include a visit to the Tongass National Forest to view the 12-mile-long sheet of blue ice. Some cruise lines, like Princess Cruises , offer self-guided trekking excursions that include a ride on the Juneau Goldbelt Tram, which affords views of the Chilkat Mountains and other panoramic scenery. You can also opt to see the glacier from the water by boat or kayak, or on a float trip.

However, if you're going to splurge on any one excursion, it's this one: Sign up for a helicopter landing on Mendenhall Glacier, followed by a dog-sledding adventure with a team of Alaskan huskies. During the approximately 30-minute helicopter ride, you'll fly over rainforests and spectacular summits, but the real fun is when you arrive at the camp to go zipping through the snow led by your team of dogs and a professional musher.

The Mendenhall Glacier helicopter excursion is offered on Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Line, Viking Ocean Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line and Silversea Cruises.

Whale Watching and Wildlife Quest

A humpback whale breaching out of the water in Alaska.

Whale watching is another top activity when visiting Juneau, and many cruise lines offer several options for tours. Holland America Line has a five-hour, small-group excursion for just 20 guests; you'll search for humpback whales on a safari vessel, then hike on Mendenhall Glacier where you can look for beavers, Arctic terns, porcupines and black bears. If you prefer an even smaller group, Princess Cruises offers a 3.5-hour private whale watching tour for six people. Possible sightings include humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, eagles, harbor seals, lighthouses, glaciers and maybe even a bear along the shoreline.

One of Viking Ocean Cruises ' excursions, the Best of Juneau, lasts more than six hours and takes guests on a naturalist-led whale watching cruise by catamaran. Before heading back to shore, you'll have a lunch of local wild-caught Alaska salmon on remote Colt Island, followed by a scenic drive to Mendenhall Glacier to end the day.

Alaska whale watching and wildlife excursions are offered on Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Viking Ocean Cruises, Silversea Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Seabourn Cruise Line.

Taku Lodge Salmon Bake

Alaska

Norwegian Cruise Line offers a 3.5-hour Taku Glacier Lodge Flight & Feast excursion that will tick several quintessential Alaska adventures off your bucket list. After flying over the Juneau Icefield (the fifth-largest ice field in North America) in a classic De Havilland seaplane, guests will land in the river at the historic Taku Glacier Lodge across from Juneau's largest glacier, the 5-mile-wide Taku Glacier.

A traditional Alaska salmon bake (with all the fixings) and drinks made with glacier ice are another highlight of the day. You might even see a black bear sniffing around for leftovers after your feast. Following lunch, take a walk in the lush Tongass National Forest before heading back from the wilderness.

Salmon bake excursions are offered on Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Viking Ocean Cruises, Silversea Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Seabourn Cruise Line.

Ketchikan, Alaska, on a clear morning.

Ketchikan sits at the southernmost entrance to Alaska's Inside Passage. It is one of the most visited ports in Alaska, according to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Visitors come to this part of the state for the beautiful scenery, Alaska Native culture and fresh seafood, including Alaska salmon and king crab. And they just might enjoy an entertaining lumberjack show or floatplane ride to kick off their day while in town.

The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show

Closeup of ax resting on a lumberjack's foot.

Watch Alaska's hearty lumberjacks battle British Columbia's tough woodsmen in a head-to-head competition to see who can win the title of "Bull of the Woods." The thrill-a-minute show – a guest favorite – features a 50-foot tree climb, ax throwing, log rolling, buck sawing and springboard chopping, along with plenty of lumberjack lore. Some lines, like Princess Cruises, offer just the show; it lasts a little over an hour, so there will be plenty of time for a self-guided tour of Ketchikan before heading back to the ship. You may also be able to book a combination tour that includes the show and an ax throwing lesson (plus a competition of your own), or a trip to Totem Bright State Park, where you'll learn about the significance of totem poles and the Native Tlingit and Haida cultures.

Holland America Line offers a tour with the lumberjack show and a feast of local Dungeness crabs. For another culinary option, check out the 3.5-hour excursion with Norwegian Cruise Line . It includes a visit to Saxman Native Village, where you'll sample smoked wild game meats, dine on chef-selected dishes prepared with regional ingredients, and taste local wines and beers.

Lumberjack shows are offered on Alaska voyages with Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises , Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises.

Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour

A man holding a crab on the Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour.

Embark on the Aleutian Ballard, the Bering Sea fishing boat made famous by the Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch" television series. The approximately three-hour excursion gives guests a firsthand experience of what it's like to sail on the vessel as a Bering Sea crab fisherman and catch massive king crabs, octopuses and other marine life with 700-pound crab pots. The boat may also stop at nearby Annette Island, where you'll have the chance to see whales, sea lions, seals and bald eagles soaring overhead (one may even try to snag your catch!). You may also get to watch local fishermen at work.

Some lines that offer the fisherman's tour include Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Line, Viking Ocean Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises.

Misty Fjords by Floatplane or Cruise

Alaska

The more than 2 million-acre Misty Fjords National Monument is one of the top attractions in Alaska . Described by naturalist and author John Muir as "the Yosemite of the North," the awe-inspiring destination is best viewed from above on a floatplane. From the sky, you'll see towering 1,000-foot waterfalls, the volcanic Revillagigedo Island, snowcapped peaks, verdant forests and 3,000-foot walls of granite descending into the fjords. On a floatplane tour, you'll also have the chance to land on the water and take in the spectacular scenery from another viewpoint.

If you're not a fan of small planes, some lines offer the option of taking a cruise from Ketchikan's harbor. You'll sail into Behm Canal surrounded by the scenery of Misty Fjords, and you may even see wildlife or bald eagle nests. You'll also cruise by Eddystone Rock, a massive volcanic spire emerging from the sea, as well as waterfalls and 3,000-foot cliffs sculpted by glaciers.

Cruise lines that offer floatplane or cruisetours of Misty Fjords include Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Viking Ocean Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises.

Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Travel tips, vacation ideas and more to make your next vacation stellar.

Street in town of Skagway, Alaska.

Skagway is another busy and popular cruise port in Alaska. It's one of the most popular towns on the Inside Passage itinerary; its fascinating Klondike Gold Rush history dates back to 1897. Take notice of the historic false-front shops reminiscent of the gold rush days as you explore. Many of these buildings are part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, and you may even see people strolling down the streets dressed in period costumes.

White Pass & Yukon Route

Alaska

One of the top-rated attractions in Skagway is the White Pass Summit Scenic Railroad journey through Alaska's wilderness. The narrow-gauge railroad is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark – an honor shared by the Panama Canal, the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower. Dating back 125 years, the historic railway features vintage rail cars and climbs to a steep 2,865 feet at the summit over just 20.4 miles. Along the way to the summit – located at the official international border between the U.S. and Canada – you'll listen to the history of the Klondike Gold Rush while passing by Inspiration Point, Dead Horse Gulch and Bridal Veil Falls. After making a loop at the top, the train will head back down the mountain. You might even see snow on the ride if your cruise to Alaska is early in the season .

Excursions on some lines combine the rail journey with other activities, like biking on the Klondike Highway from the summit or visiting Liarsville, a gold rush trail camp. Others include a stop (and a cold beer) at the Skagway Brewing Company. In addition, some cruise providers offer the train ride in a luxury class rail car, which includes complimentary beverages, snacks and a private guide who will explain the history of the railroad as you watch the scenery pass by.

Norwegian Cruise Line's six-hour excursion features a ride on the White Pass & Yukon Route, a salmon bake at Liarsville and an adult beverage with one of the "madames" at the renowned Red Onion Saloon. Meanwhile, Silversea Cruises ' new 5.5-hour tour includes the train ride; a trip to the Yukon Suspension Bridge, which sits 65 feet above the white water rapids of the Tutshi River; and a hearty lunch of bison chili.

Cruise lines that offer the railroad (and combination) tours include Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Silversea Cruises, Viking Ocean Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Musher's Camp and Sled Dog Discovery

Two sled dogs in harnesses in Alaska during the summer.

If you want to cuddle with Alaskan husky puppies, then this excursion is for you. Norwegian Cruise Line's approximately three-hour excursion takes guests to a professional musher's summer camp in Dyea Valley, where they train sled dogs for the Yukon Quest and Iditarod races. After a thrilling ride into the rainforest on a four-wheel-drive vehicle, you'll head out on a summertime dog sled with 16 Alaskan huskies at the helm. Before puppy play time, you'll learn how the mushers care for the dogs and prepare for the races. Depending on the cruise line, some tours may end with roasting s'mores by the fire.

Some lines that offer this excursion are Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Line and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Chilkoot Trail Hike and Float Adventure

Alaska

The historic Chilkoot Trail was the main route for those in search of untold riches during the famous gold rush years. Today, the trail, located in Gold Rush National Historical Park, is a rainforest full of birds and wildflowers. Excursions to the park include hikes with river floats on the Taiya River (there are no rapids) or bike tours of the trail. There are also wilderness kayaking outings to Chilkoot Lake, which is home to the five species of Pacific salmon, waterfowl, bald eagles and one of the largest brown bear populations in southeast Alaska.

Some cruise lines that offer these excursions include Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Silversea Cruises, Viking Ocean Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Sitka, at dawn, with mountains in the background and water in the foreground.

Sitka is the only community in the Inside Passage that sits on the Pacific Ocean. The small city – home to just 8,500 residents – was owned by Russia before the U.S. purchased the land in 1867. Today, you'll find remnants of this Russian heritage, like onion-shaped domes and Saint Michael's Russian Orthodox Cathedral. Sitka also has a strong Tlingit culture. In terms of shore excursions, you'll find plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing surrounded by pristine landscapes.

Sea Otter and Wildlife Quest

Seat otters resting in the Pacific Ocean just off of Sitka, Alaska.

Royal Caribbean International's three-hour jet boat cruise on Sitka Sound features panoramic scenery (including snow-capped peaks) and the chance to see abundant wildlife. During the tour, look for playful sea otters, whales and brown bears walking along the coast. The line also offers another tour – Sea Otters, Raptors and Bears Oh My – that features a naturalist-guided catamaran cruise followed by visits to the Alaskan Raptor Center (a rehabilitation center for birds of prey) and the Fortress of the Bear (a rescue operation for orphaned bears).

In comparison, Carnival Cruise Line 's VIP wildlife quest in search of whales, sea otters, coastal brown bears and more concludes with a feast of wild salmon cooked over a wood-fired grill, Alaska crab and prime rib at the Fin Island Lodge. Following a wildlife Zodiac cruise around the archipelago, Holland America Line's version of this excursion also visits the lodge for lunch in partnership with Food & Wine magazine.

You can find this excursion on Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Silversea Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Viking Ocean Cruises and Seabourn Cruise Line.

The Best of Sitka

Totem poles in the Sitka National Historical Park in Alaska.

Several cruise lines offer a version of this tour, which features an exploration of the top attractions in Sitka. On this excursion, you'll visit the Fortress of the Bear in Tongass National Park to learn about the facility's work with orphaned bears. There's also a stop at Sitka National Historical Park, where the 1804 "Battle of Alaska" between the Russians and the Tlingits was fought. Here, you'll see handcarved totem poles created by skilled Tlingit artists and get to meet local Native artists to learn more. The excursion also includes a visit to the Alaska Raptor Center.

Lines that offer this excursion include Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Viking Ocean Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Beach and cruise ship ramp at Icy Strait Point, Alaska.

Icy Strait Point in Hoonah may be a much smaller port than others on this list, but it is a jumping-off point for endless outdoor explorations, including whale watching tours and searching for coastal brown bears. Icy Strait Point is Alaska Native-owned and -operated and is home to the largest Native Tlingit village in Alaska. While here, explore the wilderness areas of Chichagoff Islands, visit the 1912 cannery museum, and grab lunch with fresh Alaska king and Dungeness crabs before taking a ride on the world's largest ZipRider. (Or, play it safe and plan to take that ride down the mountain before lunch.)

Whale Watching & Bear Search

Humpback whales bubble net feeding in Icy Strait, Alaska.

The waters surrounding Icy Strait Point host the largest summer population of humpback whales in the state, especially around the Point Adolphus area. If you purchase a tour directly with the Icy Strait Point website, they'll even guarantee you'll see whales – or they'll refund your money. During the tour, look for orcas, Steller sea lions, porpoises and seals. But be sure to also gaze overhead for bald eagles and search along the shore for bears; the Spasski River Valley in the remote wilderness of Chichagof Island has one of the highest densities of coastal brown bears in the world. Some cruise lines offer a variation of this excursion that includes a boiled seafood feast back on shore at Icy Strait Point.

You can find this excursion on voyages with Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Viking Ocean Cruises, Silversea Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Scenic Mountain Ascent & World's Largest ZipRider

Thrill-seekers (who love heights) will jump at the chance to ride the world's largest and longest zip line, which sits more than 1,300 feet above sea level at the top of Icy Strait Point. The ride to the summit on the SkyGlider mountaintop gondola is also a rush, but the real excitement comes as you zoom down 5,330-foot zip lines with five other riders at 60 mph – with views of the forest below and Glacier Bay National Park in the distance. A break-activated landing on the beach brings riders safely back to the ground. The price also includes unlimited rides on the gondola.

Cruise lines that offer this excursion include Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Silversea Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Viking Ocean Cruises and Seabourn Cruise Line.

Cars parked along the street in Seward, Alaska.

A less visited port than some others on this list (according to CLIA), Seward is the ancestral home to the Alutiiq, or Sugpiaq, people. Its breathtaking natural beauty – with mountains on one side and Resurrection Bay on the other – has been shaped by glaciers over thousands of years. Top attractions in Seward include the Alaska SeaLife Center and a charming downtown area. It also offers access to Kenai Fjords National Park.

Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise

The port side of a small cruise ship with Kenai Fjords National Park's sea stacks in the background.

During your stop in Seward, take a full-day excursion to see the astounding beauty of Kenai Fjords National Park. The impressive fjords are surrounded by mountains standing more than 6,000 feet tall and an ecosystem rich in wildlife. While there, watch for a variety of whale species, sea otters, porpoises and sea lions, and onshore, you might see bears and mountain goats. There are also 191 documented species of birds in the park and many glaciers. As you get up close to Holgate Glacier, listen as chunks of blue ice calve into the water.

Some cruise lines, such as Viking Ocean Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, offer this as an individual tour, while others like Holland America Line include it as part of a cruisetour. You can also book the excursion directly with a local tour operator if you're embarking or disembarking in Seward.

Haines, Alaska, in the evening reflected tidepools.

Haines, a small port about 20 miles north of Skagway, is best known for its Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. The 49,000-acre preserve has the largest natural gathering of eagles during the late salmon runs and boasts pristine forests, marshlands and rivers brimming with wildlife.

Glacier Point Wilderness Safari

A view of Davidson Glacier in Alaska.

Norwegian Cruise Line's five-hour excursion takes guests on an adventure into the wilderness by boat while cruising North America's deepest and longest fjord, the upper Lynn Canal. You might even see breaching whales and playful sea lions en route to Glacier Point, where you'll disembark at the beach upon arrival. After a drive through the forest and a hike in the woods, you'll have unforgettable, up-close views of the Davidson Glacier by canoe.

Lines that offer this excursion include Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line and Silversea Cruises. Holland America Line offers this excursion from Skagway.

Eagle Preserve Rafting Float Adventure

An eagle flying the sky of Alaska.

Look for bald eagles soaring overhead as you raft down the gentle Chilkat River through the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. The waters are overflowing with salmon that come to spawn, serving as food for as many as 400 bald eagles living in the Chilkat Valley. Don't be surprised to see brown bears or 1,600-pound moose coming to feast along the riverbank during your rafting adventure.

Some lines that offer this excursion include Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Silversea Cruises and Seabourn Cruise Lin e. Holland America Line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Viking Ocean Cruises host this excursion from Skagway.

38 Best Excursions on Alaska Cruise Itineraries!

Posted on Last updated: February 9, 2024

For many, the Alaskan frontier represents the final bastion of untamed wilderness in North America—a vast, wild expanse that pulses with life, legends, and awe-inspiring landscapes.

With so many ports and a myriad of excursions to choose from, it might feel overwhelming. But fret not, dear traveler! We’ve curated the ultimate guide to the best excursions on Alaska cruise itineraries.

Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie, a history buff, or someone just looking to immerse themselves in raw, unfiltered nature, there’s an Alaskan adventure calling out to you.

Juneau

Juneau: The Capital Wonders

Perched on the Gastineau Channel’s edge, enveloped by mountain ranges and lush rainforests, Juneau is not just Alaska’s capital in name—it’s also the capital of breathtaking adventures.

Being inaccessible by road from the rest of the state has its perks; Juneau remains a gem to be discovered primarily by water or air. Here are the top excursions to consider:

Mendenhall Glacier & Wildlife Quest

One of Juneau’s crowning jewels, the Mendenhall Glacier, stretches out in a glorious icy expanse. Picture this: a 13-mile river of ice, surrounded by pristine waters and lush landscapes.

And while the glacier is awe-inspiring, the journey to it is equally so. Many tours also offer wildlife quests, where you might spot black bears fishing for salmon or eagles soaring majestically above.

The visitor center here provides a trove of information, interactive displays, and trails for those keen to explore more.

Insider Tip: Don’t miss the Nugget Falls trail , a relatively easy hike that offers a vantage point of both the glacier and the roaring falls.

Whale Watching Tours

Can you hear the call of the humpbacks? These gentle giants are frequent visitors to Juneau’s waters, especially between April and November.

Embark on a specialized boat tour, often accompanied by marine biologists, and witness the breathtaking sight of whales breaching , tail slapping, and bubble net feeding. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a pod of orcas slicing through the waters!

Insider Tip: Pack binoculars and a good camera . The memory is lasting, but a well-captured photo of a breaching whale is priceless.

Downtown Historical Walking Tour

While nature is the primary allure, don’t underestimate Juneau’s rich tapestry of history. Delve into tales of gold rush pioneers, indigenous heritage, and architectural marvels.

Guided walking tours offer insights into Juneau’s transformation from a Tlingit fishing camp to the bustling state capital. Stops often include the Red Dog Saloon, St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, and the Governor’s Mansion.

Insider Tip: Engage with your guide—they’re often locals with personal stories and fun anecdotes that bring history to life.

There you have it—three distinct experiences that encapsulate the essence of Juneau. Whether you’re marveling at nature’s icy artistry, sharing a moment with a whale, or walking through history-laden streets, Juneau promises an Alaskan experience like no other.

Skagway

Skagway: Gateway to the Klondike

Imagine stepping back in time, right into the heart of the Gold Rush era. Skagway , with its beautifully preserved buildings and the indomitable spirit of adventure, offers just that.

Once a major port for hopeful gold miners dreaming of striking it rich, today’s Skagway is a treasure trove of history and natural beauty. Let’s dig into the top excursions:

White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad

Board this vintage railway, a testament to human determination and engineering prowess. As the train chugs along, you’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas—gorges, glaciers, waterfalls, and tunnels. Listen to tales of the Gold Rush, the challenges faced by miners, and the legacy of this iconic railway.

Insider Tip: Secure a seat on the left side when heading up for the best views. And don’t forget your camera, one of the top cruise essentials ; the scenic beauty is unparalleled.

Helicopter Glacier Discovery

For those who prefer a bird’s eye view, a helicopter ride over Skagway and its surrounding glaciers is pure magic.

Hover over the vast icy expanses, land on a glacier, and maybe even have a mini snowball fight or sip glacial meltwater. It’s an experience that will make you appreciate Alaska’s vastness and beauty.

Insider Tip: Dress in layers. Even in summer, glaciers can be cold, especially when you’re standing right on top of one!

Gold Rush History Tour & Panning

Get your hands dirty, quite literally, as you relive the excitement of the Gold Rush. Join a guided tour that takes you through Skagway’s history, shares tales of the Tlingit people, and introduces the brave souls who embarked on the treacherous Chilkoot Trail. Round off your excursion by trying your hand at gold panning—maybe you’ll find your fortune!

Insider Tip: While the gold flecks you find might not make you rich, they make for a fantastic keepsake. Cherish the experience, not the value of your find.

Skagway, with its fusion of rich history and mesmerizing landscapes, promises adventures that resonate with the soul. Whether you’re chasing the horizon on a train, flying over glacial wonders, or sifting through waters in search of gold, this port town guarantees memories as golden as its history.

Ketchikan

Ketchikan: The Salmon Capital

Nestled on Revillagigedo Island’s shores, Ketchikan is more than just its moniker of ‘Salmon Capital of the World’. While the salmon runs are legendary, Ketchikan is also a portal to vibrant indigenous culture, sprawling rainforests, and a deep-rooted logging history.

Alaska is all about vast, untamed landscapes, and there’s no better way to witness its grandeur than from the sky. Board a seaplane and soar over the Misty Fjords National Monument .

The dramatic cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and serene lakes are a sight to behold. Many tours offer a water landing, allowing you a moment on a secluded lake to truly soak in the tranquility.

Insider Tip: If you’re a photography enthusiast, ensure you have a polarizing filter. It’ll help reduce the glare from the plane’s windows, capturing those perfect shots.

Lumberjack Show & Totem Pole Park

Celebrate Ketchikan’s logging heritage with a thrilling Lumberjack Show. Witness ax-throwing, log rolling, and tree climbing, all performed by world-class athletes. It’s not just about brawn; the show is infused with humor and historical tales.

Post-show, a visit to the Totem Pole Park offers insights into the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures. These towering poles, carved with symbols and figures, narrate tales of lineage, rights, and ceremonies.

Insider Tip: Engage with the local guides at Totem Pole Park. Their anecdotes and stories bring to life the intricate carvings and symbols.

Wildlife Sanctuary & Eagle Center

Nature enthusiasts, this one’s for you! Venture into the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary, where you might spot deer, bald eagles, and even black bears in their natural habitat. The adjoining Raptor Center rehabilitates injured birds, offering an up-close experience with these majestic creatures.

Sitka: Where Russia Meets Alaska

If Ketchikan is a storyteller of indigenous heritage, Sitka adds another layer: Russian history. Once the capital of Russian Alaska, Sitka’s onion-domed churches stand as a testament to this era.

The town, with its blend of cultures and dramatic landscapes, offers a truly unique Alaskan experience. Here are some of the best excursions in Sitka .

Raptor Center & Fortress of the Bear

Get up close with Alaska’s wildlife! The Alaska Raptor Center rehabilitates injured birds, providing an opportunity to see bald eagles, owls, and hawks up close. Meanwhile, the Fortress of the Bear rescues orphaned bear cubs, offering a safe space for them while educating visitors on these majestic creatures.

Insider Tip: If visiting in the morning, you might catch feeding time – a real treat as you watch these creatures in action.

  • The best chances to see the Northern Lights in Alaska are from late September to early April. If your cruise is during the peak summer months, chances are slim. However, late-season cruises in September might offer a glimpse.

Are wildlife encounters guaranteed on wildlife excursions?

  • While many excursions take place in areas known for frequent wildlife sightings, no encounter can be 100% guaranteed. Nature is unpredictable. However, local tour operators often know the best spots and times to increase the chances.

Is it environmentally responsible to take glacier tours or wildlife excursions?

  • Many tour operators in Alaska prioritize sustainable and eco-friendly practices. They ensure minimal disturbance to wildlife and natural habitats. Always check the eco-credentials of an excursion provider and follow guidelines to minimize impact.

How do I choose between similar excursions at different ports?

  • Research each port’s unique offerings. For instance, while both Juneau and Ketchikan offer whale-watching, Juneau might have more humpback activity, while Ketchikan offers a richer rainforest experience. Reviews and local advice can also help in making a choice.

Embarking on an Alaskan cruise is undeniably a journey of a lifetime. But the excursions you choose can make the difference between a trip that’s memorable and one that’s truly extraordinary. Always plan ahead, do your research, and get ready for some awe-inspiring Alaskan adventures!

Best Cruise Excursions in Juneau

The first stop on this cruise will be in Juneau, the enchanting capital city of Alaska.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

Juneau is steeped in history and offers the perfect mix of beauty and culture.

The city was founded during the Alaska Gold Rush in 1880. It is named after Joe Juneau, one of the prospectors who made the initial discovery of gold.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

Today, remnants of Juneau’s past can be explored at the Last Chance Mining Museum, which showcases mining artifacts and provides insights into the gold rush era.

Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the Alaska State Museum as well to learn about the region’s rich history and indigenous cultures.

Additionally, the Alaska State Capitol building, constructed in 1931, offers a glimpse into the city’s political history.

If you want to get out and explore the natural beauty that Juneau has to offer, consider taking a tour of the Mendenhall Glacier, an impressive river of ice.

You can even experience a dog sledding tour on the Mendenhall Glacier, where you’ll take a helicopter to the glacier and then mush through the breathtaking Alaska wilderness.

While at Mendenhall Glacier, be sure to enjoy a hike along the scenic trail to Nugget Falls to witness the stunning waterfall cascading into a turquoise pool.

The Mount Roberts Tramway also takes you a staggering 1,800 feet to the top of the mountain for a panoramic view of Juneau’s surrounding mountains and fjords.

Visitors can also experience an aerial view of Juneau’s most stunning glaciers on a Five-Glacier Sea Plane Exploration.

Juneau is also known for being the best place for whale watching in Alaska.

We booked the Whale Watching & Alaska Salmon Bake Excursion where we were able to see humpback whales feeding in the pristine waters of Auke Bay.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

We even had the rare opportunity of spotting a whale calf breaching out of the water twice! It was such an unforgettable experience.

The tour begins at the cruise ship port where you’ll board a bus and take a 25-minute narrated ride to Auke Bay.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

You’ll then climb aboard a tour boat and head out onto the water in search of whales.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

The captains know the best places to go. They even recognize the whales and know them by name due to the unique pattern on their fluke that identifies them like a fingerprint.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

You are even guaranteed to see a whale on the tour or you get your money back.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Juneau #simplywander

While on the tour, there is a naturalist on board to educate the visitors and share interesting facts about whales. For instance, did you know that humpback whales eat 2,000-3,000 pounds of fish a day?

Their throats are only the size of a grapefruit, so the small herring that populate Auke Bay are their main cuisine.

Before migrating to Alaska, humpback whales spend six months in Hawaii mating and giving birth. During this time, they go the entire six months without eating.

The humpback whales lose 30% of their body weight in Hawaii, so once they arrive in Juneau they spend 20-22 hours a day looking for food and eating.

They say Alaska is the kitchen and Hawaii is the bedroom, with a very long hallway in between!

While in Alaska, nursing calves gain an average of 5 pounds per hour! Once fully grown, a humpback whale averages between 40-50 tons and is about 40-50 feet long.

It was so fascinating to learn more about these beautiful marine animals, as well as other local wildlife, and to be able to observe them in their natural habitat.

Only 1% of the population has a chance to see a whale in their lifetime, so be sure to take advantage of this incredible opportunity. It’s an experience our family will never forget!

From 1897-1898, Skagway became a vital gateway for prospectors heading to the goldfields of the Yukon.

Visit the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park and discover captivating tales of prospectors who once journeyed through here in search of fortune.

Be sure to also make a stop at the Klondike Doughboy to indulge in their Alaska Fry Bread.

The pillowy fry bread is coated in cinnamon and sugar and is absolutely heavenly!

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway #simplywander

Gold wasn’t actually found in Skagway, it was just a jumping-off point for gold seekers who traversed the 33-mile Chilkoot Trail. This challenging trail offered the shortest route to the Klondike.

For an active adventure, try a hiking excursion along a portion of the historic Chilkoot Trail, retracing the footsteps of gold seekers.

Wildlife enthusiasts can opt for a nature tour, spotting bald eagles, bears, and other native wildlife in their natural habitats.

If you want to experience the beauty of the area, embark on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad journey.

This iconic train ride takes you through breathtaking mountain scenery and provides a glimpse into the challenges faced by gold rush prospectors.

And if you’re up for an adventure, I would highly recommend booking the Grizzly Falls Zipline Tour!

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway | Grizzly Falls Zipline Tour #simplywander

Our family had the best time soaring over waterfalls and through the moss-covered trees in the Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate rainforest in the world.

Most Epic Alaska Cruise Excursions | Best excursions in Skagway | Grizzly Falls Zipline Tour #simplywander

The tour begins at the cruise terminal where you’ll board a shuttle bus and take a narrated drive through town.

It was interesting to learn more about the history of the town and we were surprised at just how small and remote it is.

In fact, this year’s graduating class only consists of 3 students! The population in the winter is only about 800-1000 people, but in the summer it spikes to 2,500 people.

But you won’t find many modern conveniences here, the closest major grocery store is 2 1/2 hours away in Whitehorse, Canada.

The shuttle bus will continue along the scenic Klondike Highway to the ghost town of Dyea.

7 Alaska Cruise Excursions That Are Worth The Money

top excursions on alaska cruise

  • Alaska Cruises
  • Cruises and Sailing
  • Destinations
  • Shore Excursions
  • Types of Travel
  • United States

Excursions come in all shapes and sizes. Some cruise lines include all excursions in the cost of your cruise passage, allowing you to choose the ones that suit your desires. Others include no excursions, which helps keep the initial cost of the cruise low, but you may find your onboard charging slipping higher than you expected. Still other cruise lines offer a hybrid option, where the basic tours are included and there is an upcharge for the higher-priced options.

A whale watch tour near Icy Strait Point, Alaska.

1. Whales, Wildlife, And Brown Bear Search

For a full-day, 5.5-hour wildlife adventure, try the Whales, Wildlife, and Brown Bear Search out of Icy Strait Point. This excursion is offered by Princess cruise lines.

On this guaranteed whale sighting tour, jump on a high-speed catamaran to cruise the very active feeding ground of the humpback whale. Return to shore for an often bumpy ride to the Spasski River for a guided drive in search of brown bear, black-tailed deer, and bald eagles. The walking portion involves covering about a half-mile of gravel and boardwalk pathways, meaning this excursion requires moderate exertion.

Views of the Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska.

2. Mendenhall Glacier Exploration

Alaska is all about the ice. Glaciers are ubiquitous and the variety of glacier-centric tour options runs from genial walks to full-on glacial climbs.

Mendenhall Glacier is the top excursion for your Alaska cruise’s Juneau stop. You can choose from a large variety of tours, and many providers have handicap-accessible options. They vary in time and price, meaning there’s a glacier tour option for everyone.

Princess Cruises offers the creme de la creme Mendenhall Helicopter Glacier Trek . If you are searching for the bucket-list Alaska cruise item, this is it. The 4- to 5-hour heli/walking tour starts around $480. You will be fitted for outerwear, hard hats, mountaineering boots, and crampons. Your kit will include a much-needed ice ax. After you touch down on the glacier, your guide will lead you on a 2-hour hike. You do not need experience, but you will be hiking for about two miles on uneven terrain.

Disney offers the 5-Glacier Seaplane Exploration that explores the Juneau icefield and five of its glaciers. Your seaplane journey takes you over the Tongass National Forest before you soar over Norris, Hole-In-The-Wall, Taku, and the East and West Twin glaciers. Wildlife spotting is very likely; keep on the lookout for eagles, bears, and moose. This tour is perfect for adventurers who require or prefer little or no walking. The minimum age is 2 years old, making it accessible for most family members.

The fishing port of Ketchikan in Alaska.

3. Sport Fishing

Salmon is king in Alaska, but there are many types of fishing adventures suitable for everyone from novices to hardened anglers.

Disney cruise line also offers a Ketchikan Alaska Fish Camp and Wilderness Dinner . The 5.5-hour fishing trip is available to family members 5 and up. Once you are outfitted with authentic Alaska fishing gear, you can cast your line in hopes of catching “The Big One.” After several hours of fishing, head to the campsite where chuck-wagon cooks will prep and cook your catch, serving up a wonderful outdoor dinner.

Panning for gold in Alaska.

4. Panning For Gold

If you are traveling with teens or tweens, gold panning in Skagway is a fun, hands-on activity for the entire gang.

Princess offers a 6-hour exclusive Gold Panning, Sled Dog, and Scenic Railway excursion. The tour includes a gold panning lesson during which you can participate in a prospecting session in a controlled pavilion. You will also watch a dog sled demonstration run that includes a meet-and-greet with the sled dogs and musher. The tour concludes with a historic train ride through Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point, and Dead Horse Gulch. This is a great tour for everyone in the family and requires only mild exertion.

Tourists on the Prince William Sound 26 Glacier Cruise.

5. Bering Sea Crab Fishermen

Hop aboard Holland America Line’s Bering Sea Crab Fishermen excursion and explore the world of Disney’s Deadliest Catch TV Series.

In the port of Ketchikan, travel along the Inside Passage with experienced fisherman hauling up the day’s king crab catch. Guests as young as 5 years old are welcome aboard the ship where stories of Alaska wilderness and maritime adventures will astound wide-eyed guests.

Food from the Silversea Alaska Culinary Experience.

6. Food Tours

There is no shortage of tours for the foodie in your group. Disney’s Woodhouse Wine Estates tasting visit combined with a downtown Seattle tour is a fun date night excursion without the kids. Princess offers a Juneau Foodie Walking Tour in conjunction with Bon Appetit where you can sample some of Alaska’s finest local cuisine.

View of Sitka, Alaska.

7. Scenic Drives In Sitka

Viking Cruises offers a 1.5-hour Scenic Sitka by Motor Coach excursion that is included in the passage price. This tour does include some incline walking when you visit Sitka National Historical Park, where you can view the site’s 18 totem poles. Learn Sitka’s Russian and U.S. history in this Southeast Alaska city.

Pro Tip: Booking Excursions

It is a good idea to choose an excursion that is booked through your cruise line. They will, in good faith, wait for you if there is a delay in your returning to the ship. If the ship cannot wait, they may make accommodations to get you to the next port of call. If you book an excursion with a private tour company, though, you are essentially on your own to get to the ship on time. If you miss the departure because of the tour arriving late, you will be responsible for catching up with the ship at the next port of call. That could be a considerable distance if they are at sea for two days, and some of the Alaska cruises have several consecutive days at sea.

Alaska Cruises are a bucket-list item you will want to explore at any age. You will find the history, natural beauty, and fresh-from-the-earth (or ocean) cuisine bring you closer to nature.

Best Excursions For Your First Cruise To Alaska

by Prof. Cruise · Published June 30, 2021 · Updated June 30, 2021

Cruise ship docked in Juneau Alaska

Are you a first-time cruiser to Alaska and wondering: What are the can’t miss excursions at each port?  Or do you want to make the most out of a limited budget for excursions?  Or maybe you want to splurge on something, but you’re wondering what?

Well, you’re in the right place!   This guide will help you pick the perfect excursions for your first cruise to Alaska, regardless of your budget.

Booking Excursions For Alaska: An Introduction

My very first Alaska cruise was on my honeymoon ten years ago.  Since then, I moved to downtown Seattle within walking distance of the cruise piers, so I hop on a ship to Alaska multiple times each season.  I’ve sailed to Alaska on nearly every cruise line and have experienced most of the popular excursions at each port. I’ve cruised to Alaska with my family, with my elderly mother, alone with my young son, and solo.  In fact, I’ve started telling people I summer in Alaska because I spend so much time cruising there every year!  And I’ve learned a lot, through both extensive research and personal experience, since my first Alaskan cruise where I lost three fingers to frostbite and wasted a lot of money on expensive excursions booked through our cruise ship that weren’t that great.  Live and learn and prevent your cruise friends from making the same mistakes!

Below you’ll find my favorite three excursions for each Alaska port based on your budget: budget friendly, moderate budget, or big splurge.  Note that I booked all of these through private companies.  I advise against booking cruise ship excursions unless you have onboard credit you need to burn through – they are more expensive and sometimes crowded and rushed.  However, if you’d rather book through your cruise line, you will probably find similar tours available.  As always, do whatever you’re most comfortable with and best suits your individual needs.

The Best Excursions For Icy Strait Point

$ budget friendly icy strait point.

Icy Strait Point, located on Chichagof Island, has a rich and interesting history as a salmon cannery and important fixture of nearby Hoonah, employing and even temporarily housing residents of Hoonah when a fire destroyed the town in 1944. But today, Icy Strait Point serves solely as a cruise ship destination privately owned by Alaskan Natives though the Huna Totem Corporation. It’s a gorgeous spot and easy to do on your own with a small budget. Go here to learn the 10 things I love about Icy Strait Point and about all the free and inexpensive things you can do on your own there including a free museum, a beautiful and easy hike, shopping, and restaurants.

Walk in Icy Strait Point

$$ Icy Strait Point On A Moderate Budget

If you want to see a bear in the wild on your cruise to Alaska, Icy Strait Point is your best bet. Why, you ask? Because the nearby Spasski River valley is known for having one of the highest densities of brown bears anywhere in the world. You won’t see them on your own though, you’ll need a guide experienced in bear tracking. Here’s the tour I’ve taken: We’re Going On A Bear Hunt . You can also read my full review of the tour (and find out if we actually saw any bears) here .

Bear in a river on a tour in Icy Strait Point

$$$ Splurge On Icy Strait Point

If your ship isn’t calling in Icy Strait Point and you want to see whales, don’t fret, you can also see them in Juneau (more information to come), but if you are lucky enough to be visiting Icy Strait Point, you’re in for a treat. Or I should say the whales are in for a treat and you’re in for a show! Icy Strait Point is an excellent place to see humpback whales bubble feeding (see image below), because they are attracted to the nutrient rich waters of nearby Glacier Bay . Go here for pricing and tour information.

The Best Excursions For Juneau

$ budget friendly juneau.

I have two great options for you if you want to do Juneau on a budget. You can do one or both depending on how much you want to spend and how much time you have in port.

Option 1: Mt. Roberts Tramway (also called the Goldbelt Tram ). This aerial tramway located a short walk from the cruise pier ascends 3,819 feet in just six minutes and offers spectacular views, hiking trails, a nature center, a restaurant, and a gift shop at the top. The cost is $35 for adults, $18 for children 3-12, and free for children under 3.

Mt. Roberts Tramway in Juneau

Option 2: Take a shuttle to the Mendenhall Glacier . Start at the Visitor’s Center where you can learn about the area and grab a map, then take the short, easy hike to Nugget Falls which is incredible in its own right, but also gets you pretty much as close as you can get to the glacier without a boat or helicopter. You can purchase shuttle tickets in advance here or you can purchase them when you get off the boat.

Mendenhall Glacier

$$ Juneau On A Moderate Budget

Juneau is one of the best ports on your Alaska cruise to go whale watching (Icy Strait Point is the other) and there’s a great tour that combines whale watching with the Mendenhall Glacier for those with a moderate budget for Juneau. Go here to check current pricing and availability.

Humpback whale

$$$ Splurge On Juneau

For those with room in the budget to splurge and who want a once-in-a-lifetime experience (not to mention the best photos ever for Instagram!), I recommend a Juneau helicopter tour and guided icefield walk . Your table mates at dinner will be jealous!

Icewalk in Juneau

The Best Excursions For Ketchikan

$ budget friendly ketchikan.

Ketchikan is an easy port to do on your own.  It’s a quaint town full of interesting history and sites within walking distance of your cruise ship.  For those with a limited budget for excursions, I’d strongly suggest doing Ketchikan on your own and saving your money for paid excursions at other ports.  See my Guide For Touring Ketchikan On Your Own , which includes a map with eight highlights identified.

Creek street in Ketchikan

$$ Ketchikan On A Moderate Budget

If you’d like to see a bit more of Ketchikan with a guide or want to limit walking, I’d recommend doing an all-in-one tour which will include a nice overview of the history, culture, and wildlife of the area as you travel to the famous salmon ladder, the Saxman Native Village, Rotary Beach (where you’ll look for whales and other wildlife), and Herring Cove (where you’ll look for bears).  Note that you’ll only get a passing glance of Creek Street on this tour, so you may want to head there on your own either before or after your tour.  You can find my full review of the all-in-one tour here .  And booking and pricing information can be found here .

Totem poll at the Saxman Native Village

$$$ Splurge On Ketchikan

If you want to splurge in Ketchikan I’d strongly recommend a seaplane tour of Misty Fjords National Monument .  This remote wilderness area is only accessible by air or sea, and while some cruise ships travel through it, you’ll see much, much more from the air.  Booking and pricing information can be found here .

Seaplane over Misty Fjords

The Best Excursions For Sitka

$ budget friendly sitka.

There are so many free or inexpensive things to do in Sitka within walking distance of the ship shuttle stop (their is a free shuttle that will transport you from the ship into Sitka) that you’ll have to book another cruise just to see them all (bummer, right?)! See my 9 Free Or Inexpensive Things To Do Near Port In Sitka for details and a map.

top excursions on alaska cruise

$$ Sitka On A Moderate Budget

If you want to see some highlights of Sitka that are not within walking distance or have mobility issues, I recommend this moderately priced tour . You’ll visit Fortress of the Bear, the Alaska Raptor Center, the Russian Bishop’s House, St. Michael’s Cathedral, and the Sitka National Historic Park/Totem Park.

Eagle from the Raptor Center in Sitka, Alaska.

$$$ Splurge On Sitka

For a splurge (which isn’t actually much of a splurge priced at around $100), explore the beauty of the Alaskan coastline around Sitka in a kayak. If kayaking in Alaska isn’t on your bucket list, it really should be. Go here for tour details.

Kayak on a tour of the Sitka shoreline in Alaska.

The Best Excursions For Skagway

$ budget friendly skagway.

Skagway is home to just over 1,000 residents, but welcomes over 1 million tourists, mostly arriving via cruise ship, every year. It is best known as a former Gold Rush town, restored to offer a sometimes foggy glimpse back to an earlier time, but with the requisite diamonds, fudge, and novelty t-shirts to make it quickly come into focus as a popular cruise port.

top excursions on alaska cruise

It’s a fun little town to just explore around and do a bit of shopping.  You can also hit the Visitor’s Center (on 2 nd and Broadway) or one of the small, free museums representing different parts of life during the Gold Rush.  The museums include the Park Museum (right next to the Visitor Center), the Mascot Saloon Museum (3rd and Broadway), the Chilkoot Trail Center (between 5th and 6th Ave), and the Moore Homestead (400 Spring St).

If you want to work off the three desserts you ordered for dinner the night before (come on, I can’t be the only one), you can hike to Lower Dewey Lake or walk to Reid Falls and the Gold Rush Cemetery .

$$ Skagway On A Moderate Budget

If you have a moderate budget for Skagway and especially if you have kids with you, I’d recommend a sled dog excursion . You’ll see beautiful scenery on your drive up to the musher camp and enjoy a comfortable summer ride on a scenic trail winding through stunning mountain vistas on a UTV partially pulled by a team of eager canine athletes in training. Plus, you’ll get to play with puppies and learn more about the life of a musher! Here’s a review of the tour I did. That exact tour isn’t available anymore, but this one is very similar. There will likely also be one available through your cruise ship if you want to go that route.

Sled dogs during an excursion to a musher camp in Skagway

$$$ Splurge On Skagway

There is one excursion I recommend to all first-time cruisers to Alaska: the White Pass Railroad in Skagway. In fact, I wrote a whole blog post about why. I promise this will be a highlight of your cruise to Alaska if you decide to do it. Just look at this view:

The White Pass Railroad in Skagway.

What About The Up-Close Glacier Excursion On My Scenic Cruising Day? Worth It?

So now that we’ve covered excursions at each of the common ports on cruises to Alaska (I’ve also been to Anchorage , Homer , and Kodiak on cruises to Alaska, but they are less common so I didn’t include them here), I want to mention excursions available through your ship that get you up close to a glacier on your scenic cruising day (depending on your itinerary it will be the Sawyer Glacier, the Hubbard Glacier, or the Margerie Glacier in Glacier Bay). These excursions are pricey, but spectacular. They will give you a better sense of how massive the glaciers are and how small you are in comparison (I still think you’re pretty special though). If it’s in your budget, I’d go for it! If it’s not, don’t worry – you’ll get an awesome view of the glacier right from your cruise ship.

The Hubbard Glacier as seen from a small boat.

So with that, feel free to ask questions in the comments or share Alaska excursions you’ve done that you feel should have made the list.

Class Dismissed.

Have you done the helicopter trip to glacier in Juneau that includes dog training camp and sled ride?

I haven’t, but I’ve talked to others who have and they’ve loved it.

Thanks. I know it is pricey, but this may be the only time (2022) I get to go to Alaska.

    BEAUTY TO GO WILD OVER

With vast forests, rolling tundra, mighty rivers, pristine lakes and towering mountains, you will feel tempted to continue exploring the outdoors with Alaska land tours after your cruise. Whether in remote outposts or cities surrounded by wilderness, the people who call the Great Land home share an independent spirit, a strong sense of community and a love of Alaska’s wild beauty so their welcome will make your visit truly memorable.

    Anchorage, Alaska Glaciers

    URBAN MEETS EPIC

Alaska’s biggest city, Anchorage, is set between the sparkling waters of Cook Inlet and the dramatic snow-capped Chugach Mountains. Few places in the world can match its appealing blend of metropolitan pursuits and outdoor living. Anchorage is at its most exuberant during the summer, when locals make the most of the mild temperatures and long days to stay out late into the sunny night. The big city also boasts Alaska’s biggest and most diverse dining scene, from great burger joints and craft breweries to classic steakhouses and cosmopolitan cuisine.

    Denali, Alaska Tallest Peak

    SIX MILLION ACRES OF DISCOVERY

Towering high in the center of the Alaska Range is the Denali, North America’s tallest peak at 20,310 feet. Central to the cultural heritage of the native peoples who have lived here for thousands of years, the giant mountain is the ultimate symbol of the Alaskan wild. Denali National Park remains a wild kingdom, where animals large and small, roam free. View Dall sheep, wolves, caribou, moose and the mighty grizzly bear among many. And come summer, they are joined by more than 160 species of migratory birds.

CITY OF GOLD AT THE EDGE OF THE ARCTIC

Back in 1901, riverboat captain E.T. Barnette ran aground in the shallows of the Chena, so he set up a trading post. A year later, the nearby discovery of gold transformed the remote settlement into a boomtown, and Barnette the first mayor. Fairbanks today remains a destination for adventure seekers, as the gateway to Alaska’s northern wilds and some its most isolated terrain. While home to just 32,000, Fairbanks is the big city of the interior and cultural hub for the sparsely populated region. You can still go for the gold in Fairbanks, panning just like the early prospectors did.

    GOLD DREDGE 8

The discovery of hold transformed Alaska, and the Gold Dredge 8 tour brings the state's gold rush history and mining heritage to life. Over three decades, the pan-like dredge extracted gold just outside downtown Fairbanks. Years after closing, it re-opened as a national historic district and is a popular attraction. You'll travel there aboard a replica narrow-gauge train whose conductor shares tales of the early prospectors. Then watch the giant dredge - itself an engineering landmark - in action before getting hands-on, panning for gold the old-fashioned way. Explore the camp where the miners lived, and then enjoy some cookies and hot coffee while your fortune is weighed.

Here you can get up close to the orphaned, injured or displaced animals, all under expert care in their natural habitats so that they can be reintroduced into the wild. The resident population varies by the season but can include caribou and moose calves, fawns, porcupines, birds, lynx, and brown and black bears.

From the Alyeska Resort at the base of Mount Alyeska, you'll ascend 2,300 feet to the summit. From the tram, you can see for miles, with even more expansive vistas from the mountaintop observation deck. The panorama includes the seven hanging glaciers and the snow-capped peaks of the Chugach Mountains, the forested Chugach valley and out to the sparkling waters of the Turnagain Arm waterway. Be sure to look down, too, and you may see wildlife ambling across the mountain's slope.

15 Alaska cruise mistakes you never want to make

    Melinda Crow

For many, an Alaska cruise is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You don't want to screw it up because you might not get the chance for a do-over. Unfortunately, it's easier than you think to make Alaska cruise mistakes that can ruin a trip or prevent you from experiencing Alaska to the fullest.

While cruises to the Last Frontier are not polar-cruise-level adventures, they require more careful planning than for a Mexico or Caribbean sailing. You need to get all the details right, from booking the cruise and packing your bags to what to do and see during your cruise.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Here's a list of things you should never do on an Alaska cruise. Avoid these Alaska cruise mistakes, and you'll be on your way to a smooth sailing.

Alaska cruise planning mistakes to avoid

No matter how many times you've cruised before, you might be shocked at how much planning you need to do for an Alaska sailing. Get these things wrong, and you might miss out on your big Alaska cruise experience.

Assume all Alaska cruises are the same

    top excursions on alaska cruise

This is an easy mistake to make on your first Alaska cruise. However, matching your ship and itinerary to your expectations and travel style is crucial for a successful trip.

Are you looking for a full day of glacier time? Try a midseason sailing that visits Glacier Bay National Park . Early and late-season cruises might be unable to access the glaciers on their itineraries due to ice floes.

Want to see whales? A round-trip Alaska cruise in June is ideal. Do you want to fish for salmon? You'll want to book at the peak of the salmon fishing season, from mid-June to mid-August. Ketchikan is the salmon capital of the world, and while most cruises stop there, a few don't, so make sure it's on the itinerary if you wish to fish.

Are you taking kids on your Alaska cruise? Big ships often have more for kids to do on board, which might be more important than where the ship goes. Expedition-style cruises may have less for youngsters but appeal to independent teens. These voyages offer a more intimate and close-up Alaska experience, with outings on kayaks and Zodiac boats that launch directly from the ship.

    Wait to book excursions

You don't have to worry about booking tours in advance in some cruise destinations. Alaska cruises are not like that.

Alaska shore excursions fill up fast. It's worse in midsummer, but even on shoulder season sailings, you may not find space on the excursions you hoped to do if you wait until you're on the ship to book. The only solution is to sign up for tours as early as possible.

Does this mean you shouldn't take advantage of last-minute Alaska cruise deals if you find them? Of course not. Snap those babies up — just come prepared with a list of second and third choices of excursions, just in case.

Related: Tips for booking the best cruise shore excursion for your money

    Overlook independent excursions

You don't have to stick with ship-sponsored shore excursions in every port in Alaska. On my last Alaska cruise, we booked kayaking independently for our stop in Ketchikan. It was one of the best experiences of the entire cruise. The company picked us up and dropped us off at the cruise ship. We were guaranteed an on-time return to the ship and paid far less than for the ship's kayaking excursions.

If you want to check out independent tours , you can find several Alaska excursion aggregators online or deal directly with independent businesses. Make sure you inquire about tour timing and leave a buffer so you won't miss your ship even if there's traffic or a delay.

Book same-day flights on embarkation day or early flights home

You don't want to find yourself stuck in an airport because of a flight delay when you should be boarding your cruise. To avoid this problem, book your flights to arrive the day before your cruise departs rather than the same day.

If you think it can't happen to you, listen to my most recent flight horror story. I was on not one but two flights on the same day, where minor mechanical problems caused deplaning and two-hour delays. I should have landed at my destination at 11:30 a.m. but didn't arrive until after 5 p.m. Had that been embarkation day, my ship would have sailed without me.

Similarly, it's always best to book departing flights home for the afternoon in case the ship is delayed returning to port or is not cleared by authorities on time. If you're flying in or out of Anchorage, know that all transportation options include several hours of travel from the ports of Seward and Whittier; you might consider overnighting in Anchorage either pre- or post-cruise to play it safe.

    Skip the travel insurance

Airline issues aside, Alaska can be a wee bit hazardous. You will encounter slippery slopes and rocky roads — and that's just walking through Alaska port towns. You might be participating in more daring activities than normal, such as flying in helicopters, hiking across glaciers, kayaking icy waters or zip lining through forests. It's easy for something to go wrong.

On my last Alaska cruise, I heard about two passenger emergencies. A kid broke an arm on the ship and needed surgery, so a family of five disembarked in Ketchikan — not exactly a cheap end to their vacation, I'm guessing. Later in the sailing, a sick passenger was airlifted directly off the ship by the Canadian Coast Guard before we made it to Victoria.

If you live in the U.S., your health insurance is most likely valid in Alaska. You'll be covered for medical expenses but not the other expenses associated with any injury that interrupts your cruise. Travel insurance is the way to go unless you want to pay for flight changes and medical evacuation out of pocket.

Alaska cruise packing mistakes to avoid

    top excursions on alaska cruise

Packing for an Alaska cruise can be tricky. The region's unpredictable weather means it can be rainy and 50 degrees one day, then sunny and 85 degrees the next. Mix in boat rides and glacier watching from the ship at 6 a.m., and you have a complicated packing job ahead of you. Don't make these Alaska cruise packing mistakes.

    Forget your rain gear

Rule No. 1 on Alaska cruises: Pack rain gear. It might not rain one drop on your cruise, but chances are good that the weather will be wet at some point on your trip. When it does, you'll want the right gear to stay dry and not be drippy and miserable.

Waterproof shoes or boots are a must. For extra protection, spray them with a water-repellant sealer before you pack. You can stow lightweight raincoats or ponchos and pull-on rain pants in your backpack during excursions when you don't need them.

    Skimp on layers

Layers are the only way to dress on an Alaska cruise. Start with thin, base-layer undergarments that won't bulk up your clothes and are comfortable even if the day turns out warmer than expected. The final layers of outerwear should be lightweight because you may need to stuff them in your backpack for half the day as the temperature rises.

I especially like puffy vests and jackets for Alaska. You can shed the jacket as temperatures allow, then lose the vest if it gets even warmer. Top everything with caps, knit hats, earmuffs and gloves. Those things might be excessive for a stroll through town but important in the wind on a whale watching boat.

Related: Cruise packing list: The ultimate guide to what to pack for a cruise

    Overpack on eveningwear

The dress code on most Alaska cruises is more relaxed than in other cruise destinations. Days are long and outdoorsy, leaving people less enthusiastic about rushing back to the ship to put on fancy clothes and dress shoes.

Trade out your hiking shoes for comfy flats or dress sneakers. Jazz up casual, neutral-colored slacks (even jeans) or skirts with jackets or scarves. You can leave the formalwear and high heels at home.

    Cheap out on insect repellant

Mosquitoes in Alaska aren't always a nuisance, but they can be horrendous. Pack insect repellant and full-coverage clothing as though you were planning to visit a rainforest ... because you are.

If you don't plan on checking a bag, pick up bug spray in your departure city or first port of call.

Leave the binoculars and cameras at home

One question I get asked often is whether you can see whales and other wildlife from the ship. The answer is a resounding yes. Unfortunately, much of what you will see is from a distance.

You can solve that problem with a pair of lightweight binoculars. They're also useful for getting a close-up view of glaciers or spotting eagles in port. Consider bringing a pair for everyone in your group because you don't want to fight over one pair when a pod of whales comes into view.

As for cameras, I recommend that everyone in your travel group has a water-resistant camera or a waterproof smartphone case or pouch. I lean toward cameras rather than phones for two reasons. One, most cameras dropped into the depths of an Alaskan bay pose a less traumatic loss than most smartphones. My second reason is in the next section.

Related: Can you use your cellphone on a cruise?

Mistakes to avoid during your Alaska cruise

    top excursions on alaska cruise

Once you're on board your ship, it's time to put all the stress of planning and packing behind you. You've made it, and you don't want to let anything get in the way of enjoying your cruise.

Stare at your phone too much

An Alaska cruise is the ideal time to hit pause on your digital life. Sure, you want to capture the amazing scenery, but you know what? Few of the pictures you take will accurately portray the scale of the beauty of Alaska.

The photos you'll enjoy most when you look back next year are the ones of your travel partners enjoying the trip. Take those, then spend your time soaking up the enchantment of this place. The news, the email correspondence and your Instagram followers can take a back seat until you're back home.

Assume the seas will be smooth

Don't be surprised if you feel seasick in Alaska's waters, even if no other cruise has made you feel that way. Cruising through the Inside Passage is generally calm, but the open waters of the Pacific Ocean can be choppy. Even the bays can churn up quickly during summer storms.

Ships also do a lot of maneuvering, including turning complete circles designed to give everyone on board access to the amazing views. Unfortunately, those tight turns can contribute to nausea for some people.

Prepare by packing motion sickness relief bands you place on pressure points on your wrists, prescription scopolamine transdermal patches, ginger candies, over-the-counter seasickness medications and herbal motion sickness patches. I've used these for years, with only one failure on a rather small ship.

You can also treat the woozies with seasickness tablets, which are often available free at the medical center or guest services, green apples from the buffet and ginger ale from your ship's friendly bartenders. Related: How to avoid seasickness on your next cruise

    Spend all your time indoors

You packed all those clothing layers — now's the time to use them. The coldest part of your Alaska cruise will likely be while the ship cruises through can't-miss scenery. Don't wimp out in an observation lounge. Bundle up and head outside to fully take in the view. Your balcony may give you an edge over the folks in interior rooms, but you won't get a 360-degree vista unless you're out on the top deck.

The best souvenir advice I've received is to buy a cozy throw or blanket at your first port stop. It won't cost a fortune and will serve a purpose for the rest of the cruise. Picture yourself cozy and warm in your fuzzy Alaska souvenir blanket, sipping hot chocolate while watching glaciers calving. Once home, you'll remember your epic vacation every time you snuggle up on the couch.

    Sleep through your vacation

This is not a cruise you want to sleep through — and even if that's your plan, you may have difficulty accomplishing it. Long hours of daylight, excursions and glacier viewings that start early and even your own fear of missing out can have you out of bed early and staying up later than you might on any other cruise.

Sleep apps and eye masks may help with the daylight situation. I also find that Alaska cruises are ideal for ordering room service meals. It definitely saves time before morning excursions and can provide a bit of downtime in your cabin for lunch or dinner on occasion.

    Fail to try something new

Your Alaska cruise offers many opportunities to try things you might never have the chance to do again. You could walk on glaciers, snorkel in a dry suit in the frigid Alaska waters or play with sled dog puppies. Or, how about riding in a sled pulled by sled dogs? We already mentioned salmon fishing, which is surprisingly fun, even if you'd never go fishing at home.

The array of things to try in Alaska can be as tame or as adventurous as you want — it's the joy of discovery that's key. I once kayaked in Ketchikan with a woman on her first solo cruise in Alaska. She'd never kayaked before. When our marine biologist guide pulled a sea cucumber from the crystal-clear waters to show us, she squealed with delight when he offered to let her hold it. That's the kind of joy you cruise to Alaska to experience.

    Bottom line

You can avoid the most common Alaska cruise mistakes with a little extra planning.

The goal is to have the Alaska cruise experience you and your travel companions long for. Achieve that by choosing an itinerary that gets you to the things you want to see and do, shopping early for excursions (especially the ones you have your heart set on) and packing gear and clothes that will keep you comfy during your Alaska adventure.

Everything else is about stepping outside, breathing in the shockingly clean air and enjoying the cruise.

Cruise the sheltered waters of the Tongass Narrows and observe the boundless natural beauty on the way back to your ship. This alternative means of reaching Ward Cove offers express boarding, allowing you to bypass the long lines often associated with other modes of transportation. Ambient music on board will set the mood while you sample locally crafted beer or champagne, but majestic scenery is the real attraction of cruising versus driving from downtown to Ward Cove. Along the way, you will pass uninhabited islands, densely forested shorelines, and countless boats – both recreational and commercial – as the waterway is part of the Alaska Marine Highway and the Inside Passage. You may even see floatplanes taking off and landing with splash in the harbor. Be sure to look for wildlife such as sea lions and bald eagles. You may even spot a humpback whale breaching the water’s surface.

HIGHLIGHTS • Cruise to Ward Cove instead of driving and enjoy spectacular scenery along the way. • Admire the natural beauty that comes right to the edge of Ketchikan’s city limits. • Look for wildlife such as sea lions in the Tongass Narrows and bald eagles overhead.

HELPFUL HINTS • Dress in weather-appropriate clothing. • Wear flat comfortable walking shoes.
