Two performances are also included which will see Marr share a stage with The Killers . These will be at the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh and the Vital Festival in Cardiff.
Last year saw the guitarist – who has played with the likes of The Smiths, The Cribs , Modest Mouse , The The , The Pretenders and Electronic with New Order ‘s Bernard Sumner –released his latest solo album.
‘Fever Dreams Pts 1-4’, was Marr’s fourth solo LP, and marked his highest charting solo album to date. In a four-star review by NME , the album was praised for having “a real sense of movement”.
“This album is the work of a man with no time for big cash reunions or the squabbling that prevents them,” it read. “Instead, he has turned in a record fuelled by soul and new ideas.”
Last week, the guitarist, songwriter and composer also announced that he would be releasing a new photo book , dedicated to his guitars.
Set for release on October 17 via Thames & Hudson, Marr’s Guitars will explore the artist’s range of instruments, gathered throughout his 40-year career, and share anecdotes about the milestones he faced during this time.

A Night With the Johnny Marr Orchestra review – ‘pumped symphonic’ classics
Aviva Studios, Manchester First large gig at new super-venue sees Marr magically reinvent Smiths, solo and Electronic tracks
‘I ’m going to need a new tour bus,” quips Johnny Marr , referring to the vast amount of people on the stage. His regular band of 10 years has expanded and now includes his son Nile on “guitar and fabulous harmonies”; a 30-piece orchestra – conducted by Fiona Brice – is here to provide what the 60-year-old frontman has called a “highly pumped symphonic feel”.
The occasion marks Marr’s 10 years as a solo artist and new solo best of, Spirit Power. It’s also the inaugural large music event at Manchester’s Aviva Studios. The product of the UK’s biggest cultural investment (£242m) on a venue since the Tate Modern is a vast space for 5,000 people with an unusually high ceiling allowing for spectacular lights and visuals.
Marr talks about how New Town Velocity – one of his loveliest solo songs – was inspired by walking around Manchester as a kid with big dreams, and performs it with film of himself pounding those streets as an adult after an illustrious 40 years in music. An orchestral rendition of the Smiths’ Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me is illustrated by photographer Chris Hunt’s book Beeton Grove: the photos of poverty in 1970s Longsight powerfully demonstrate the environment such songs came from.
The orchestra never feels bolted on and the new arrangements allow songs to be reinvented or extended. How Soon Is Now? has a new classical coda. Get the Message by Electronic – Marr’s 90s group with Bernard Sumner – has Bollywood-type strings. That song misses the New Order singer’s lighter vocals but Marr sings the Smiths’ Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want beautifully: the combination of acoustic guitar, flutes, xylophones and brass is magical.
Danceable solo track Easy Money sounds like a Wythenshawe Chic. A giant projection of Smiths bassist Andy Rourke – who died this year – is a lovely touch and the new arrangements of the band’s classics Panic and There Is a Light become joyous singalong celebrations. Hopefully we’ll hear more from the Johnny Marr Orchestra, if he can fit them on that bus.

JOHNNY MARR announces UK headline shows for Summer 2023
Johnny Marr has announced UK headline shows for summer 2023, beginning 17th July at Holmfirth’s Picturedrome before taking in Lincoln’s Engine Shed (18th), Northampton’s Roadmender (20th) and the Tunbridge Wells Assembly Hall (27th).
The dates will continue through August, including performances at Wrexham’s Rockin Chair (9th), Frome’s Cheese & Grain (16th), the Plymouth SU Main Hall (17th) and Middlesbrough Empire (25th). All tickets will be on general sale from Friday, 28th April, at 10:00 BST here .
The headline shows join a busy summer festival schedule that will see Johnny Marr and his band perform at Pennfest, South Facing Festival, Lakefest, Beautiful Days, Hardwick Festival, Helsinki Festival, Victorious and more, all set to take place through July, August and September 2023.
The 2023 live run is also set to include two huge shows at Edinburgh’s Royal Highland Centre and Belfast’s Vital Festival with The Killers. An extension of Johnny’s 33-date tour across Canada and North America as a special guest to the band through Autumn 2022.
2022 saw the release of ‘Fever Dreams Pts 1-4’, Johnny Marr’s fourth album since launching his solo career a decade ago with 2013’s ‘The Messenger’. Debuting at #4 in the UK albums chart on its release, the album marked Johnny’s highest charting solo LP to date and was widely received as a career-best by fans and media.
The album’s release lit the touchpaper for a landmark year that saw Johnny headline the BBC 6 Music Festival, tour with Blondie as the special guest at their ‘Against The Odds’ arena shows, including a performance at London’s O2, and a three-month arena tour across Canada and North America with The Killers. Returning to the UK, Johnny launched The Johnny Marr Award, a new funding initiative in partnership with The Salford Foundation Trust to support the next generation of young musicians from the Salford community. Never one to sit still creatively, later in the year, Johnny contributed to ‘Pretty Boy’, the first single to be revealed from long-time friend and collaborator Noel Gallagher’s upcoming new solo album ‘Council Skies’, on which Johnny performs several tracks.
Looking ahead, October 2023 will see the publication of ‘Marr’s Guitars’, a stunning new photography book presenting the most significant of Marr’s extensive collection of electric and acoustic guitars, revealing through them the evolution of his iconic sound and style of playing. Including personal reflections and insights written by Johnny and photographs shot by Pat Graham, each guitar is identified with a crucial moment, a specific song or a particular sound, and each embodies a key aspect of Marr’s lifelong passion.
Tickets for Johnny Marr’s 2023 Summer live shows are on sale here , with further activity soon to be announced.

What can be said about Johnny Fuckin Marr that hasn’t been said before. Greatest living guitarist with an ear for a great riff. And now more comfortable in the front man role. Not a great voice but strong enough to carry those songs and on the many Smiths tunes he is not tempted to ape Mozzer.
You could feel the love in the room which was not confined to Nile Rodgers who enthusiastically introduced his friend Johnny.
Seeing Johnny is the best way to remember the greatness of The Smiths and let’s hope there is one light that never goes out.

The show was fantastic and very intimate! Johnny is extremely talented, and very friendly. He interacted with the crowd, and played many guitar riffs practically in your face. He played several Smith songs better than what you here on the records. Bottom line, it was an Amazing show.
Johnny Marr is the genuine article. Originator, icon, in excellent form to boot. *Not* a heritage act, tho he knew just when to pull out Smiths material. Good light show too. A pleasure & privilege to see him play.

Johnny Marr announces Brighton Dome concert
Johnny Marr (pic Andy Cotterill)
Johnny Marr has announced a UK headline tour for April 2024. Beginning at Newcastle’s O2 City Hall on 2nd April, the dates will see Johnny perform at some of the UK’s most iconic venues through Spring 2024 – including London’s Eventim Apollo on 12th April, Brighton Dome on 13th April – before closing at Nottingham’s Rock City on 14th April.
Tickets are on general sale HERE from 10am on Friday 27th October; with exclusive presale access from 10am on Wednesday 25th October available to fans who pre-order the album from Johnny’s official store HERE .
The news arrives amidst a buzz of activity celebrating the first ten years of Johnny Marr’s prolific solo career. ‘Spirit Power: The Best Of Johnny Marr’ , a major new collection curated by Johnny, is set for release on 3rd November via BMG. The album also includes two brand new songs titled ‘Somewhere’ and ‘The Answer’ , and a number of unheard demos.
Arriving with immediate anthemic magnetism, ‘ Somewhere ’ offers an exciting glimpse of a future fan favourite. MOJO described the track as “a glistening beam of choking guitars propelled by an electro-rock pulse”, where CLASH commented on the “unmatched sense of electricity” as the song was added straight to the BBC 6 Music and Radio 2 playlists.
October 17th saw the publication of ‘Marr’s Guitars’, a stunning new photography book, via Thames & Hudson. Following his 2016 autobiography, ‘Set The Boy Free’, Johnny describes ‘Marr’s Guitars’ as “the guitar book for people who wouldn’t usually own a guitar book”. The book offers a portal into the symbiotic relationship between Johnny and the guitars that have informed not just the last decade, but the lifetime evolution of his iconic sound. With personal reflections and insights written by Johnny Marr, foreword written by Hans Zimmer and photographs shot by Pat Graham, each guitar is identified with a crucial moment, a specific song, and each embodies a key aspect of Marr’s lifelong passion for songwriting. The book also features contributions from Noel Gallagher, Bernard Butler and Ed O’Brien.
Two very special homecoming concerts, titled ‘A Night with the Johnny Marr Orchestra’ , will take place at Manchester’s Factory International Aviva Studios on 7th and 8th December where, for the first time, Johnny and his band will be joined by a 30-piece orchestra. Led by conductor Fiona Brice, the orchestra has been assembled by Johnny specially for the event and is composed of musicians from across the North. Fans can expect a special set spanning Johnny’s entire 40-year career in what is tipped to be an epic finale to his 2023 live tour. Tickets are on sale HERE .
The shows will follow a busy summer live season packed with festivals, outdoor gigs, and surprise on-stage appearances, most recently including a guest performance with PJ Harvey for a duet of ‘The Desperate Kingdom Of Love’ at Manchester’s Albert Hall, described by the NME as “a pinch-yourself moment”.
September saw Johnny Marr takeover BBC 6 Music as the station’s Artist in Residence, presenting eight new programmes exploring the songs that shaped specific periods of Johnny’s life. Episodes include Influencers, where Marr spotlights the artists who informed his approach to the guitar and songwriting, and North x North West, in which he recalls his time living in Portland, Oregon. The series also sees Johnny take a deep dive into the inspiration behind various The Smiths riffs, demonstrate his deep love of Chic, and share advice for anyone about how to play the guitar. All episodes available to stream on BBC Sounds HERE .
‘Spirit Power: The Best Of Johnny Marr’ is released on 3rd November 2023 on heavyweight 2LP, CD and a limited Deluxe 2CD featuring additional material. Independent record shops have a limited gold 2LP while HMV will carry a limited Cobalt blue 2LP. Pre-order HERE . An exclusive limited double picture disc plus merchandise bundles will be available from the official Johnny Marr store, pre-order HERE .
