Specialist tour operator Journey Latin America has refreshed three of its Private Journeys offering visitors even better value for money in 2024 as well as the opportunity to explore some of the region's off-the-radar locations.

Value Costa Rica: The Essential Highlights showcases the country's top attractions: Tortuguero National Park, Arenal Volcano, Monteverde Cloud forest and Manuel Antonio in just 12 days. The holiday costs from £1,750 per person, almost £250 per person less than last year, and includes additional wildlife excursions in the Santa Elena Reserve and Manuel Antonio National Park. The price includes good-quality accommodation in beach and wilderness lodges, breakfast daily, two dinners, transfers and excursions. International flights are extra.

The enchanting silver cities that lie Northwest of Mexico City and are easily accessible by road yet are almost always overlooked by first-time visitors to Mexico. Each city has its own character: the university town Guanajuato built in a narrow gorge is a centre for music, theatre and dance, while the homely little town of San Miguel de Allende with cobbled streets and leafy plazas is a magnet for artist and Querétaro is renowned for its impressive colonial aqueduct. Journey Latin America's 12-day Explore and Relax: Silver Cities to Pacific Coast holiday has been revamped to focus on San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato and Querétaro before ending on the jungle-fringed beaches of Zihuatanejo. The holiday costs from £3,830 per person and includes first-class hotels on a B&B basis, transfers, a domestic flight and excursions. International flights are extra.

A holiday to Antarctica will offer a dazzling display of larger-than-life landscapes, a kaleidoscope of colours and a symphony of sounds. Along the shores and among the hauntingly beautiful bergs and glaciers thrives vociferous and always entertaining wildlife. Journey Latin America's 14-day Signature Antarctica: Highlights of the Antarctic Peninsula has been refreshed to include a 10-day mid-range expedition cruise on board the Ocean Endeavour allowing guests the chance to camp on the ice, kayak and take a photography course. This excellent value-for-money holiday costs from £8,250 per person and includes an expedition cruise to Antarctica, full board during the cruise, domestic flights in Argentina, mid-range hotels on a B&B basis pre and post cruise, excursions and transfers. International flights are extra.

Alcion tour AP2423, 09/03/2024-31/03/2024

Excelent trip, very good guide

Very helpful

A fabulous holiday in Argentina

Our first visit to the country, visiting Buenos Aires, the glaciers in Patagonia, Bariloche and ending with a wi e tour around Mendoza (sourced separately through a London wine tour specialist we have used before) ,

From drawing up an itinerary through booking flights, transfers, hotels, just excellent. A most useful app too.

Fantastic Holiday in Costa Rica

A very well organised trip to Costa Rica. Trip organised by JLA in the UK and backed up by superb ground staff in Costa Rica.

We were looked after very well by Lina Fuller. Her experience helped create a holiday that seemed slightly different to the other holiday makers that we met on our travels in Costa Rica.

Places to broaden the mind.

We travelled through Patagonia and saw scenery and sites that we could not have imagined. The people and the variety made for an utterly memorable experience. It’s more than a holiday.

JLA made sure all that needed to happen did. And inevitable hiccups were sorted without fuss. Every location was of real interest and our dip into the Andes was fascinating.

Fabulous trip to Argentina

We spent three weeks in South America, travelling from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, through El Calafate, El Chalten and the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. We even managed a trip to Colonia in Uruguay. Sophie, our agent at JLA listened to our wishes and put together an excellent itinerary with just the right amount of time in each area. Our plans we almost disrupted by an airline national strike however Sophie was able to sort everything on our behalf and we were able to enjoy our holiday without any worries. Accommodation was very good and transfers and internal travel arrangements went without a hitch. A wonderful holiday in a beautiful part of the world.

See above. Sophie Barbour was very responsive, offered us helpful advice and put together an excellent itinerary. She always responded quickly to any queries. both before and during our trip. I would recommend her to anyone.

Brilliant Experience

A superbly arranged tour of Costa Rica, stop over in Quito, Ecuador and 5 day cruise in the Galapagos Islands.

Everything went to plan

Peru & Coast Rica

Incas, Wildlife & beach

Excellent tour through Central America

Group tour overland through six countries in Central America over 21 days. excellent tour - very well led and organised. excellent introduction and overview of the region. Highly recommended

Longstanding specialist knowledge of the region. Excellent for holidays to Central and South America whether in group or private. Excellent local knowledge and guides

Great cross-country mix to discover Central America in all its glory

6 countries in 3 weeks ? Easy with JLA and they throw in a couple of extra border crossings to give you more than 5 sets of passport stamps !

JLA goes for depth nog breadth - sticking to Central and South America rather than offering the whole world as too many of their peers do. . Keep it up !

Amazing from start to finish

We did a self drive in Ecuador and a cruise in the Galapagos. Every day was memorable. The whole holiday was well organised. All our daily information was clear and all our local guides were friendly, helpful and informative.

From the initial planning stage onwards the communication was good. The package they put together was excellent. All the accommodation was of a good standard. Local guides were very helpful. Everything went smoothly. We felt we were in safe hands.

Avoid - lack of quality in the service provided

Very disappointed with the service we received from Journey Latin America. We paid over £20k for a trip to Argentina and Brazil to mark a special occasion and thanks to their lack of attention to detail and poor service, we had a nightmare journey out which almost completely ruined our holiday. At this price point we expected much more including quicker response times from our travel consultant Chris Rendell-Dunn, greater attention to detail in the preparation and delivery of our itinerary (which failed to include timings for tours, pick ups and other bookings until we asked for them) and in one instance we were given completely the wrong information about one of the hotels we stayed in. We have given a star only because the guides we had were more focussed on delivering a better service even though we felt some of the tours were at times to suit the guide and not the client.

Amazing from start to finish.

Just got back from a tour of Argentina & Brazil. Amazing from start to finish. We were meet by reps who took us to our many hotels and checked us in. All transfers and excursions were private in 15 seater mini buses for our group of 4. When we arrived in Isla Garnde we were given a free boat trip which was an unexpected surprise. The trip was arranged exactly as we requested. Would highly recommend the for a trip in Latin America.

Awful awful service from start to finish

If I could give zero stars I would. They arranged our honeymoon last year and couldn't have been less reliable, last minute hotel changes, failed to meet us on arrival on THREE occasions, we were incorrect internal flight tickets, the list really is endless. We complained on return to very little care and hardly an apology, menial compensation given and I'll also add that ABTA were also of no help. If you have an alternative travel agent please use them and not this terrible company.

I am regularly bombarded with emails from this company so I contacted on three separate occasions regarding trips to different South American destinations Each time I spoke to someone who took my details the trip details and then told me they would contact me with a proposed itinerary and quote . On all 3 occasions I never heard from them again . I looked around and contacted a much smaller company called Real World holidays who were so friendly and I had a fantastic trip with them to Chile and Easter Island and planning to use them for all the trips I plan in the future Your loss Journey Latim America !

We booked a holiday to Colombia a couple of years ago with this company. Marvelous country but we were sent to the most mainstream tourist places having saud we preferred off the beaten track, and every time I mentioned somewhere I'd researched about was told it was either impossible to get to or they'd never heard of it, so.major disappointment. Two years later decided to give them another chance with interest in.el Salvador, consultant we spoke to was so unpleasant, proposed itinerary was over £12000. Basically they sell themselves as specialists but are very mainstream, not particularly great at customer relations and are not as great as they think. For a truly specialist and wonderful Latin America experience try veloso tours or jacada travel.

The Greatest for Latin American Adventures

Journey Latin America, or JLA as they are affectionately known as, is the best company if you want to travel to Latin America. I have been with them for over 12 years now and have never been disappointed. Their local staff are excellent in offering advice, sorting bookings and airline tickets and answering awkward questions. Their website is clear, precise, up-to-date and easy to navigate. Their final joining instructions are comprehensive and on the last trip to Central America with them two months ago, I even got a free copy of the Footprint guide to Central America. Their group leaders are the best and most of them live in or have some affection for the countries that they take you through. Apparently, the company was founded by two enthusiasts who traveled in South America many years ago the hard way! Now they make it easy for us!

  • What are the 10 Best South America Travel Agencies & Tour Companies in 2024?

What are the 10 Best South America Travel Agencies & Tour Companies in 2024?

A simple Google search for the best South America travel agencies gives hundreds of results. While some offer group tours, others specialize in tailor-made and luxury tours. But with so many options, it’s hard to decide which ones are trustworthy, if their tours meet your travel needs, or if they’re even worth your money. So how do you know which are the top South American tour companies? Lost among the slew of tour operators that organize trips to any destination around the world, we’ve handpicked some of the best travel companies in  South America that are focused solely on those destinations, which makes these agencies true experts in this region.

We indeed spent hours scouring the Internet and comparing dozens of them before rounding up 10 of the best South America tour companies. Here’s what we based our decisions on the thoroughness of their website and presence of online tour offers, whether or not the company’s focused on a certain type of traveler, and their support for sustainability. But by far the most important criteria is the existence of local offices, which can provide you with the lowest tour prices, local knowledge of a destination, and quick and direct assistance when needed during your trip to South America.

#10 Latin Excursions

As a member of Traveller Made, which is a network of luxury travel designers, Latin Excursions works to provide you with bespoke and authentic experiences in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Galapagos, Panama, Peru, and Uruguay. This South American travel operator offers both pre-designed and custom journeys, and whether you want to adventure, rest and relax, or enjoy family time in style, all of the tours are private. Latin Excursions truly believe that only private tours have the ability to take you to places that other tourists can’t easily reach, which makes for exclusive experiences. Plus, by traveling with Latin Excursions, you’re helping them support a number of organizations like Foundation La Vecina, Tomas De Berlanga School, Morrinho Art Project, and Mantay, all of which work to provide safe and supportive environments in communities throughout South America.

#9 Southern Explorations

Based in the US, Southern Explorations offers active travelers the opportunity to ski, stand-up paddle, snowshoe, and camp in 12 countries that include Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, and Uruguay. Big on adventure travel and sports, in particular, this agency has even curated a bucket list that highlights once-in-a-lifetime experiences like trekking through the Torres del Paine, rafting in Costa Rica, and cruising the Amazon. Aside from supporting four different sustainable travel initiatives, Southern Explorations also gives you the chance to be responsible travelers by participating in a carbon offset program.

#8 SA Expeditions

Focused on adventure travel and the outdoors, SA Expeditions aims to use a variety of trekking and active tours to give their guests an inside look at the issues surrounding conservation and sustainable tourism in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, and Antarctica. This California-based travel agency takes an intensive approach to plan low-impact tours to underrated parts of South America. For those who dream of getting off the beaten path in Ecuador or in the northern Andes of Peru, they offer a number of trekking options for the Great Inca Trail and even arrange for llamas to transport your luggage, which is a fast-disappearing practice. With their only office in San Francisco, SA Expedition vows to use travel to protect South America’s vulnerable communities and bring fair income to their people.

#7 Chimu Adventures

For the ambitious traveler who wants to experience it all, Australia-based Chimu Adventures offers tours to 22 destinations in South America, Central America, Antarctica, and the Arctic. Their vast number of itineraries aim to suit the different travel needs and ages of travelers, with cruises to the Polar regions and high-energy trekking options to Patagonia. Their comprehensive website packs in all the information you need to know, from required vaccinations to packing lists for each destination. They’re an eco-savvy business and on the ground, they create jobs in destinations where they lead tours and serve guests with meals sourced from locally produced goods instead of imported goods. In the physical offices in both Sydney and Lima, Chimu Adventures practice environmental sustainability by going paperless and giving 10% of earnings from each package tour back to local communities through their MAD Project.

#6 South American Vacations

Based in Florida, South American Vacations organizes tours to six South American countries, as well as Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama, Cuba, and Antarctica. Though they don’t have any offices on the ground in South and Central America, their local guides and experts never fail to meet your travel needs, in part because they specialize in private and small group tours that only allow for up to 20 people per group. This company offers an especially vast range of tours for the outdoor adventurers, designing itineraries that invite you to zipline through Costa Rica and sea kayak in Ecuador. For those who enjoy the outdoors at a more mellow pace, there’s wildlife viewing in Brazil’s Amazon, or horseback riding in Peru.

Headquartered in California, the team at Vaya is made up of American ex-pats and caters largely to North Americans. They don’t have any local offices, but their customer care and quality of service are first-rate, as they have deep connections with a large network of local guides on the ground in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Vaya is deeply committed to sustainable tourism and respects the local communities that they offer tours in by organizing small-scale and low-impact tours that are led by fairly paid local guides. They proudly support three different organizations that focus on practicing sustainable tourism, protecting delicate ecosystems, and improving the livelihood of the communities in which Vaya organizes its tours.

#4 Totally Latin America

Catering to luxury travelers with the highest regard for service and quality, Totally Latin America crafts each itinerary with fine attention to detail. To ensure each guest receives a highly personalized experience from trip planning to actually be there, Totally Latin America has partnered with Zicasso, a business that matches your unique needs and interests to the most suitable travel expert at Totally Latin America. They design journeys to destinations in five countries, which include Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru, with their local office stationed in Cusco. Browse their Travelogue section, which gives you ideas about what you can do in each destination, as well as accommodation options in blog post form. When you travel with Totally Latin America, you also make a promise to promote responsible travel and conserve the immense diversity of Latin America.

#3 South America Travel Centre

Any journey you book with this Australian-owned travel company to any part of South America, Mexico, Cuba, Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala, or Antarctica is tailor-made. As one of the best South American travel companies, they’re hyperfocused on delivering private experiences. Since each trip is highly personalized, you travel in your own group with a private guide. Though South America Travel Centre doesn’t have any local offices apart from the one in Melbourne, they guarantee 24/7 assistance with the help of their in-country partners once you’re at your destination. This travel agency strongly believes that businesses should give back and are doing so by supporting a rotating list of charities. Two of their current ones are Sol Y Luna, which works to provide education for children in Peru, and Halo Trust, which funds the safe removal of landmines in Colombia.

#2 Journey Latin America

As a multi-time winner of the British Travel Awards and a host of other prestigious ones, Journey Latin America specializes in organizing group and private tours for British travelers to 23 South and Central American countries, as well as Antarctica. With over 40 years of experience, this South American travel operator has really paved the way in using sustainable travel to boost a country’s development and preserve their culture and heritage. They focus heavily on responsible tourism, and you’ll be delighted to learn that Journey Latin America supports a number of conservation projects throughout Latin America, like the LATA Foundation, and Water To Go. Their website even has detailed information on eco-conscious accommodation options so you make an informed choice about your stay. Though their sole office is based in London, their live chat is highly responsive during their office hours.

#1  Latin Discoveries

With 9 local offices in South America’s most touristic cities, Latin Discoveries makes sure there’s someone on-site to meet your travel needs anytime you book with them. Their team is made up of a huge majority of local South American travel experts who know the ins and outs of each destination they promote and have been offering private and custom tours to an international clientele since 1997. Since then, their services expanded online from luxury to adventure, with over 300 customized tours, and hundreds of travelers choose to book with Latin Discoveries each year. For ambitious travelers, this company offers multi-country tours, serving up itineraries that include up to six countries in one go. Another one of their biggest strengths is their extensive selection of Amazon lodge and cruise tours in Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru. Last but not least, when you purchase a tour with them, you’re also giving back to protect South America’s wild, as 1% of all earnings go to Nature and Culture International, an NGO that works to preserve the continent’s endangered ecosystems.

Get in touch here

With so many top South American travel agencies listed here, there’s no wrong choice. To narrow down the list and make sure you choose the right one for your needs, we recommend you contact three of them. Compare the website of each of the agencies you’ve chosen and their range of tours, and get in touch with their travel consultants. See how professionally and quickly they respond to your needs, study their detailed itineraries, and of course their prices. By then, you should be able to decide which South American travel company speaks to your travel needs the most. You should then be set to make a final decision before packing for an amazing trip to South America!

Paving the way for sustainable aerospace in latin america.

SAF contest

Airbus aims to lead the aviation industry's decarbonisation journey as it works towards its goal of 'net-zero carbon emissions by 2050'. Fostering initiatives and partnerships across the region, here's a glimpse at how the Company has embarked on this journey in Latin America.

Levering collective intelligence to support the production and use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

In 2022, Airbus joined Vuelo Limpio in Chile, a government-led programme to promote the use of sustainable energy and the decarbonisation of the aviation ecosystem. This year, the government is expected to announce a SAF strategy as a result of a multi-stakeholder working roundtable.

In addition to this, the Company has also joined forces with LATAM Airlines Group to fund a study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change (MIT Joint Program) . With the first part of the results due to be released during FIDAE, the study, entitled, "Options for Decarbonizing Aviation in Latin America in a sustainable way: an assessment of carbon policies, carbon prices and fuel consumption in aviation up to 2050", will explore a range of avenues related to the deployment of SAF, pathways related to low-carbon hydrogen, direct air capture, and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage. The analysis will provide actionable recommendations for Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru.

More recently, Airbus and a group of aviation industry representatives from Mexico have launched two contests for academic and research institutions in the country to submit proposals on ways to accelerate the production and scalability of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) . The new contest results will be shared in 2024 during the FAMEX airshow.

Visit  our website  to learn more about the use of SAF.

Electrification and advanced air mobility in Latin America

In addition to promoting the use of SAF in Latin America, Airbus has also progressed towards the exploration of full electrification through advanced air mobility -  an equally important lever in Airbus’ innovation and decarbonisation roadmap.

In 2022, the Company embarked on the co-creation of a functioning advanced air mobility ecosystem in Latin America with operator Ecocopter . The partners extended their collaboration to jointly explore and design new air mobility services in the region, notably in Ecuador, Chile and Peru, leveraging both Ecocopter and Airbus' networks and footprints.

Airbus recently inaugurated its fully electric VTOL prototype, known as CityAirbus NextGen . The eVTOL will be suited for a range of deployments, including passenger transport, medical services or ecotourism, bringing advanced air mobility services to communities in urban areas and beyond.

New tour of Latin America heads off the beaten track for wildlife and history

2023-02-08T12:41:00+00:00

The itinerary with tour operator Journey Latin America covers parts of Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, exploring some of the region’s highlights.

Jesuit Missions Ruins in Paraguay

The UNESCO-listed Jesuit Reductions in southern Paraguay were established by the Jesuits in the 17th century to nurture the earthly and spiritual lives of the local indigenous Guarani people.

Jabirú: Wildlife, Wine and Jesuit Missions includes visits to three significant South American capital cities: Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Asunción, whilst also taking in Uruguay’s coastal wine-growing region and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Colonia del Sacramento.

The 14-day tour ventures inland to the well-preserved Jesuit Missions in Paraguay and the remote wetlands of Iberá in Argentina, a haven for wildlife including jaguars, capybaras and giant river otters.

Capybara on the Ibera Wetlands, Argentina

Groups will explore the wetlands of Ibera in Argentina which is a haven for wildlife including capybara.

The package includes accommodation, most meals, domestic flights and private transfers. There’s one departure in October 2023 and more to be announced for 2024.

Jim Ashworth, group tours manager at Journey Latin America said: “The Jabirú itinerary was inspired by one of our experienced travel experts and is an innovative itinerary to Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay taking in some of the region’s highlights as well as its lesser-known gems, we think the tour has something for everyone.”

About Journey Latin America

Specialising in group holidays to Central and South America, the company runs 34 tours to every country in Central America. The maximum group size is 16 or 20 depending on the group tour.

It offers two styles of group tour - Classic Journeys and Discovery Journeys.

Discovery Journeys stay in mid-range hotels – they are usually family-run independent hotels with local character, en suite facilities and well-located. The itineraries include the highlights but also go off the beaten track and they use a mixture of private and public transport. They are designed to really get under a skin of a country and offer opportunities for soft adventure.

Classic Journeys take in the highlights in style and comfort staying in upper mid-range hotels and use private transfers throughout, unless a flight is needed.

All tours are fully escorted by a Journey Latin America-employed and trained tour leader who speaks fluent Spanish and/or Portuguese.

The US and Japan reinforce their military alliance to counter the growing weight of China

Biden and japanese pm fumio kishida are meeting this week in washington, which will also host the leader of the philippines, ferdinand marcos jr, to show america’s support following pressure from beijing on manila.

The Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida and his wife Yuko, with Joe and Jill Biden, on April 9 in Washington.

If the geopolitical strategy of the Biden administration had to be summarized in a single principle, it could well be to “ prepare alliances for new challenges ,” be they the rise of China, the aggressiveness of Russia or the nuclear threat from North Korea. And in these preparations, Japan is a fundamental ally. Washington is making it clear this week with a quasi-state visit by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in which the military alliance and the collaboration of the respective defense industries will be reinforced, and which will end with an unprecedented trilateral meeting with the Philippines.

The three countries have “objectives, interests and — truth be told— strategic concerns that are increasingly converging in areas such as the South China Sea,” said White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby in a conversation with journalists on Monday. “We will try to find ways to deepen the collaboration with our closest partners to ensure a free, open, prosperous and secure Indo-Pacific region.”

Kishida arrived in the United States on Monday with his wife, Yuko, for a four-day visit in which he will receive the highest level of attention possible. It is not officially a state visit, since he is not the top leader of his country — Emperor Naruhito is — but he will be offered a state dinner at the White House with nearly 200 guests on Wednesday, and on Thursday he will deliver a speech before both houses of Congress. The Japanese flags to welcome him are already decorating the streetlights of the main avenues in Washington D.C.

On Wednesday the Japanese prime minister, who is running for re-election in September as leader of his party, the conservative Liberal Democratic Party, will also participate in a welcome ceremony at the White House and, after a meeting with President Joe Biden, both leaders will hold a joint press conference.

Fumio Kishida visits the Arlington Military Cemetery, in the State of Virginia, this Tuesday.

The link with Tokyo “is the most important bilateral relationship in the Indo-Pacific,” according to Chris Johnstone, an expert analyst on Japan at the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) in Washington.

Both countries share deep suspicions about the rise of China and the giant’s growing influence in the Asia Pacific. Tokyo is a fundamental player in that region and increasingly active in the rest of the world. Japan is also further removed from the official pacifist policy that it adopted in the post-war period: it has been modernizing its armed forces for a decade, and has promised to double its defense budget to reach 2% of GDP. In addition, it is the cornerstone of the network of mini-economic and security alliances that the United States has woven in Asia to counteract China’s strength, from the Quad (U.S., Japan, Australia, and India) to the U.S.-Japan-South Korea trilateral ties, and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF).

During Kishida’s visit, the two allies plan to further strengthen their partnership, senior U.S. officials have said. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell indicated last week at an event that these plans include steps for collaboration and coordination of their defense industrial policies, with the aim of jointly developing, and in the future facilitating co-production of, leading defense teams.

Japan is emerging as a possible base for shipyards and munitions production, including Patriot missile defense systems that could be re-exported to Ukraine.

“The war in Ukraine has highlighted the importance of [developing] a joint capability between allies as a fundamental part of deterrence and our collective combat capability. It is part of a broader issue for the United States to allow greater and easier cooperation in technology and defense with our closest partners, because we need it,” says Johnstone.

Collaboration with Aukus

On Monday, the three members of the military alliance known as Aukus (Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) announced that they are considering collaborating with Tokyo in its so-called Pillar II, the joint development of strategic weapons in areas such as artificial intelligence , submarine warfare, or hypersonic equipment.

“There is broad consensus that Japan should be one of the first partners, if not the first, to be included as part of an expanded effort on specific projects,” Johnstone said. But senior U.S. officials stress that before deeper integration, Japan must resolve issues such as a stronger cyber defense or tougher legislation on top secret information.

The two countries will also strengthen and update their bilateral military alliance, signed after the end of World War II, to allow them to respond more agilely to the threats they perceive from China and, increasingly, from North Korea , and Beijing’s harassment of the democratically governed island of Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory. Biden and Kishida are expected to announce steps to strengthen the exchange of information and improve the coordination of their commands, although without reaching the level of the U.S.-South Korea alliance, where the forces of both countries are managed by a joint command.

“If we think about North Korea’s provocations, the nuclear threats, China’s maritime assertiveness and that country’s broader military buildup, this is a natural step in the development of the alliance that will contribute to the deterrent effect,” according to the CSIS expert.

On Thursday, Biden will also host Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the president of the Philippines, for the second time in just over a year, before holding a trilateral meeting that will focus on Beijing’s growing pressure on Manila in the South China Sea, where both governments maintain a bitter territorial dispute. The trilateral forum, the first among these partners, “sends an unequivocal signal that both Washington and Tokyo are on Manila’s side in the face of Beijing’s growing maritime aggression,” says Lisa Curtins, director of the Indo-Pacific Security Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS). The Philippines, after the rapprochement with Beijing favored during the administration of Rodrigo Duterte, has increasingly entered the orbit of American alliances in the Marcos era.

“Close cooperation between Japan, the United States and the Philippines is essential for an open and free order, based on the rule of law, and for the economic prosperity of the region,” the prime minister declared last Friday.

But not everything will be smiles and flattery at the meetings between American representatives and their Japanese counterparts. Standing between the two are the aspirations of the Japanese company Nippon Steel to acquire U.S. Steel for $15 billion, a plan that has been criticized by both President Biden and the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Kishida’s trip also seeks to reinforce Japan’s position in the face of a hypothetical victory for Trump at the November election, given the possibility that the former president could demand greater investments in defense from Tokyo or try to seek a pact with China that could destabilize the Asia Pacific region.

Chinese migration to US is nothing new – but the reasons for recent surge at Southern border are

Published: Apr 10, 2024

' data-srcset=

By: Magazine Editor

A large group of Chinese migrants stand in line

Written by Meredith Oyen , associate professor of history , UMBC

The brief closure of the Darien Gap – a perilous 66-mile jungle journey linking South American and Central America – in February 2024 temporarily halted one of the Western Hemisphere’s busiest migration routes . It also highlighted its importance to a small but growing group of people that depend on that pass to make it to the U.S.: Chinese migrants .

While a record 2.5 million migrants were detained at the United States’ southwestern land border in 2023, only about 37,000 were from China .

I’m a scholar of migration and China . What I find most remarkable in these figures is the speed with which the number of Chinese migrants is growing. Nearly 10 times as many Chinese migrants crossed the southern border in 2023 as in 2022. In December 2023 alone, U.S. Border Patrol officials reported encounters with about 6,000 Chinese migrants , in contrast to the 900 they reported a year earlier in December 2022.

The dramatic uptick is the result of a confluence of factors that range from a slowing Chinese economy and tightening political control by President Xi Jinping to the easy access to online information on Chinese social media about how to make the trip.

Middle-class Chinese migrants

Journalists reporting from the border have generalized that Chinese migrants come largely from the self-employed middle class . They are not rich enough to use education or work opportunities as a means of entry, but they can afford to fly across the world .

According to a report from Reuters , in many cases those attempting to make the crossing are small-business owners who saw irreparable damage to their primary or sole source of income due to China’s “zero COVID” policies . The migrants are women, men and, in some cases, children accompanying parents from all over China.

Chinese nationals have long made the journey to the United States seeking economic opportunity or political freedom. Based on recent media interviews with migrants coming by way of South America and the U.S.’s southern border, the increase in numbers seems driven by two factors.

First, the most common path for immigration for Chinese nationals is through a student visa or H1-B visa for skilled workers. But travel restrictions during the early months of the pandemic temporarily stalled migration from China. Immigrant visas are out of reach for many Chinese nationals without family or vocation-based preferences, and tourist visas require a personal interview with a U.S. consulate to gauge the likelihood of the traveler returning to China.

journey latin america email

Social media tutorials

Second, with the legal routes for immigration difficult to follow, social media accounts have outlined alternatives for Chinese who feel an urgent need to emigrate. Accounts on Douyin, the TikTok clone available in mainland China, document locations open for visa-free travel by Chinese passport holders. On TikTok itself, migrants could find information on where to cross the border, as well as information about transportation and smugglers, commonly known as “snakeheads ,” who are experienced with bringing migrants on the journey north.

With virtual private networks, immigrants can also gather information from U.S. apps such as X, YouTube, Facebook and other sites that are otherwise blocked by Chinese censors.

Inspired by social media posts that both offer practical guides and celebrate the journey , thousands of Chinese migrants have been flying to Ecuador, which allows visa-free travel for Chinese citizens , and then making their way over land to the U.S.-Mexican border.

This journey involves trekking through the Darien Gap, which despite its notoriety as a dangerous crossing has become an increasingly common route for migrants from Venezuela, Colombia and all over the world.

In addition to information about crossing the Darien Gap, these social media posts highlight the best places to cross the border. This has led to a large share of Chinese asylum seekers following the same path to Mexico’s Baja California to cross the border near San Diego.

Chinese migration to US is nothing new

The rapid increase in numbers and the ease of accessing information via social media on their smartphones are new innovations. But there is a longer history of Chinese migration to the U.S. over the southern border – and at the hands of smugglers.

From 1882 to 1943, the United States banned all immigration by male Chinese laborers and most Chinese women. A combination of economic competition and racist concerns about Chinese culture and assimilability ensured that the Chinese would be the first ethnic group to enter the United States illegally.

With legal options for arrival eliminated, some Chinese migrants took advantage of the relative ease of movement between the U.S. and Mexico during those years. While some migrants adopted Mexican names and spoke enough Spanish to pass as migrant workers, others used borrowed identities or paperwork from Chinese people with a right of entry, like U.S.-born citizens. Similarly to what we are seeing today, it was middle- and working-class Chinese who more frequently turned to illegal means. Those with money and education were able to circumvent the law by arriving as students or members of the merchant class, both exceptions to the exclusion law.

Though these Chinese exclusion laws officially ended in 1943, restrictions on migration from Asia continued until Congress revised U.S. immigration law in the Hart-Celler Act in 1965 . New priorities for immigrant visas that stressed vocational skills as well as family reunification, alongside then Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping’s policies of “reform and opening,” helped many Chinese migrants make their way legally to the U.S. in the 1980s and 1990s.

Even after the restrictive immigration laws ended, Chinese migrants without the education or family connections often needed for U.S. visas continued to take dangerous routes with the help of “snakeheads.”

One notorious incident occurred in 1993, when a ship called the Golden Venture ran aground near New York , resulting in the drowning deaths of 10 Chinese migrants and the arrest and conviction of the snakeheads attempting to smuggle hundreds of Chinese migrants into the United States.

Existing tensions

Though there is plenty of precedent for Chinese migrants arriving without documentation, Chinese asylum seekers have better odds of success than many of the other migrants making the dangerous journey north.

An estimated 55% of Chinese asylum seekers are successful in making their claims, often citing political oppression and lack of religious freedom in China as motivations. By contrast, only 29% of Venezuelans seeking asylum in the U.S. have their claim granted, and the number is even lower for Colombians, at 19%.

The new halt on the migratory highway from the south has affected thousands of new migrants seeking refuge in the U.S. But the mix of push factors from their home country and encouragement on social media means that Chinese migrants will continue to seek routes to America.

And with both migration and the perceived threat from China likely to be features of the upcoming U.S. election, there is a risk that increased Chinese migration could become politicized, leaning further into existing tensions between Washington and Beijing.

A small box is highlighted over Western Africa and two lines are extending out from it, meeting with two larger images which take up most of the image, indicating that the larger images are zoomed in to the location highlighted over the Earth. The larger image to the left has a label above it in white that says “True Color Image”. It shows a portion of land on the right side of the image in shades of brown. The left side of the image is primarily the dark blue color of the ocean. Over the land and ocean, primarily in the top left corner of the image and along the right border are wisps and speckles of clouds. The larger image to the right, which has a label above it that says “Polarization”, is the same as the left image, but with inverted colors. The land shows up as a dark black color, while the ocean is seen as a brighter blue. The clouds now show up in a range of colors. The clouds on the right border of the image appear in shades of muted greens and oranges, and as the clouds extend over to the top left corner, they are seen in a full rainbow color. From right to left, the colors transition from dark purple, through the rainbow to end at red.

Peter Higgs: science mourns giant of particle physics

Few scientists have come into as much fame in recent years as British theoretical physicist Peter Higgs , the namesake of the boson that was discovered in 2012, who died on 8 April, aged 94.

Peter Higgs: the man behind the God particle

It was 60 years ago when Higgs first suggested that an elementary particle with unusual properties could pervade the Universe in the form of an invisible field, giving other elementary particles their masses 1 . Several other physicists thought of this mechanism independently around the same time, including François Englert, now at the Free University of Brussels. The particle was a crucial element of the theoretical edifice that physicists were building at the time, which later became known as the standard model of particles and fields.

Two experiments — called ATLAS and the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) — at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) near Geneva, Switzerland, confirmed Higgs’s predictions half a century later, and the discovery of the Higgs boson was announced. It was the last missing component of the standard model, and Higgs and Englert shared a Nobel Prize in 2013 for predicting the particle’s existence. Physicists at the LHC continue to learn about the properties of the Higgs boson , but some researchers say that only a ‘ Higgs factory ’ — a dedicated collider that can produce the particle in copious amounts — will enable them to gain a profound understanding of its role.

Inspiring figure

“Besides his outstanding contributions to particle physics, Peter was a very special person , an immensely inspiring figure for physicists around the world, a man of rare modesty, a great teacher and someone who explained physics in a very simple yet profound way,” said Fabiola Gianotti, director-general of CERN, Europe’s particle-physics laboratory, in an obituary posted on the organization’s website; Gianotti announced to the world the discovery of the Higgs boson at CERN. “I am very saddened, and I will miss him sorely.”

Many physicists took to X, formerly Twitter, to pay tribute to Higgs and share their favourite memories of him. “ RIP to Peter Higgs . The search for the Higgs boson was my primary focus for the first part of my career. He was a very humble man that contributed something immensely deep to our understanding of the universe,” posted Kyle Cranmer, a physicist at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and previously a senior member of the Higgs search team at ATLAS.

Happy birthday, Higgs boson! What we do and don’t know about the particle

“ I was fortunate to meet Peter Higgs in 2013 (days after the Nobel prize announcement). He was modest as he told a group of PhD students the history of the boson theory. Afterwards, I was very lucky to get my copy of the New York Times with the discovery signed by him,” said Clara Nellist, a physicist at the University of Amsterdam and a member of ATLAS.

“ A career highlight was helping Peter into a cab after the Collider exhibition launch @sciencemuseum in 2013 with a carrier bag of special-edition beer marking his recent Nobel,” posted Harry Cliff, a physicist at the University of Cambridge, UK.

“He disliked the limelight but was comfortable with friends and colleagues,” Frank Close, a physicist at the University of Oxford, UK, and author of the book Elusive : How Peter Higgs Solved the Mystery of Mass (2022), said in a statement to the UK Science Media Centre. “His boson took 48 years to appear, and when the Nobel was announced, he had disappeared to his favourite seafood bar in Leith.”

An exciting journey

Higgs’s work continues to be of fundamental importance, said physicist Sinead Farrington at the University of Edinburgh, UK. “We’re still on an exciting journey to figure out whether some further predictions are true, namely whether the Higgs boson interacts with itself in the predicted way, and whether it might decay to other beyond-the-standard-model particles,” she told the Science Media Centre.

For physicist and science writer Matt Strassler, based in Boston, Massachusetts, Higgs’s death represents “the end of an era” . “Higgs was a fortunate scientist: he lived to see his insight at age 30 turn up in experiments 50 years later,” he posted on X. “His role and influence in our understanding of the #universe will be remembered for millennia.”

Man walking across America making his way through Alabama

CULLMAN, Ala. ( WAFF ) - A man making the journey by foot from coast to coast is currently passing through North Alabama.

Ranger Kielak began his 3,000-mile walk on March 10 with his feet dipped in the Atlantic Ocean in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He intends to dive into the Pacific Ocean at Pismo Beach, California by late August.

WAFF caught up with him Friday afternoon on the side of U.S. Route 278 in Cullman, Alabama.

Kielak said he is walking with the goal to raise $100,000. He wants to split the money raised evenly between the Future Farmers of America, Bigger than the Trail and the Hospice Promise Foundation non-profit organizations.

With little more than a backpack on his back filled with food, water and some basic camping gear, Kielak also said he looks to meet and learn from people across the country. While on his trot, he is interviewing people he believes are making a difference in the world for his podcast titled, “Within Range Coaching.”

Drawing inspiration from the likes of singer/songwriter Mike Posner, who went on a nationwide walk of his own in 2019, and an Ernest Hemingway quote, Kielak wrote that he “thought. And thought some more…. and, eventually, realized something important. If you can’t stop thinking about something, that probably means you should do something about it.”

So in 2022, he decided that in 2024 he would fully commit to the walk.

“If you want to do something crazy, you can do it,” Kielak said. “Your ‘walk’ doesn’t have to be a walk across the country. You can do these big things - whether it’s starting a business, asking the guy or gal out... Like, even those base level things, it’s possible for you to do it. You have it in you. You have all the resources and skills already.”
