Situated along the banks of the Charente River, the Cognac region of France is divided into six different crus (cru is a French term for growth zones): Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, Fins Bois, Bon Bois and Bois Ordinaire. The Grande Champagne cru, which comprises approximately 34,000 hectares, is known for its quiet hills and rich, chalky soil, and grows arguably the finest grapes for cognac production in the region. Kelt XO Tour Du Monde Cognac is made exclusively from Ugni Blanc grapes harvested in the Grande Champagne region. After the grapes have been harvested, they are pressed and the remaining grape juice is fermented into a wine. Then, the grape wine is distilled twice through a traditional alembic still, and the resulting cognac is matured in French Limousin oak casks for an average of 30 years (although a portion of the cognac is matured for up to 70 years). Following its initial, three-decade long beautyrest, the casks of cognac are loaded onto the top deck of an Evergreen Lines ship that circumnavigates the globe over the course of three months (a "Tour du Monde"). As a result of this ocean-aging, the cognac and oak are forced to mingle as the ship rolls back and forth through the water. In addition, the temperature and barometric pressure fluctuations during the sea voyage cause the oak staves to expand and contract, and allow the cognac to extract more of the tannins and flavor from the oak during its maturation. After its journey at sea, the cognac is returned to France and rests in Kelt's stone cellars for an additional 65 days before it is finally bottled. Kelt Tour Du Monde XO Cognac has a deep amber color, along with an aroma of flowers, jasmine and honeysuckle. The aroma opens up to subtle notes of wood on the palate, including oak and cedar, which complement notes of port, walnuts, apricots, pears and apples. The finish, which is smooth and elegant, has a touch of sweetness. Kelt XO earned a score of 93 points from Wine Enthusiast , which rated it the best XO Cognac. In addition, it is the only XO Cognac to ever be awarded the Platinum Medal at the World Spirits Championship. Pick up a bottle of the best today!

All shipments require a signature from an adult twenty-one (21) years of age or older per federal law. Couriers will require a proof of ID before delivery. If an adult is unavailable to sign for the package, it may be returned. No exception can be made.

Orders are processed and shipped from the LoveScotch facility Monday through Friday. Please allow up to three (3) business days to process shipping orders.

Orders shipping via the Saver rate (where available) take approximately 5-7 days to have local carrier tracking assigned. Once tracking is assigned, your order should be delivered within 5-7 business days. We are unable to guarantee a specific delivery date. The carrier will attempt delivery three times before it is returned to sender. If an additional delivery attempt is need, an additional delivery fee will be required.

Ground shipping times are best estimates, but are not guaranteed by the shipping couriers.

Orders that are refused or returned after three (3) delivery attempts shall be refunded for the value of the product only. Shipping charges are not refundable and returned orders incur a secondary shipping charge to cover the return shipping fee.

Vintage Wine & Spirits offers one hour pickup for orders. Once the order has been placed, please wait an hour until coming to the store for pickup. Our team works to pull orders as quickly as possible but it does take some time for fulfillment. Our team will contact you as soon as possible if there are any issues with the order. 

When you arrive at the store, let a staff member know you are picking up an order. You will have to bring your valid ID for pickup. Pickup orders can only be picked up by the person who placed the order and whose name is on the Credit Card. All pickups must be done by someone 21 years old or older.

Des soldats américains de la Seconde Guerre mondiale honorés plus de 80 ans après leur crash d’avion

À la veille du 1ᵉʳ janvier 1944, un avion américain explose dans le ciel au-dessus des habitants de Corme-Royal (Charente-Maritime). Plusieurs soldats décèdent dans l’accident quand d’autres ont réussi à survivre. 81 ans plus tard, la commune rend hommage à ses hommes qui ont combattu pour la France.

Décembre 1943. La guerre entre les alliés et les occupants allemands fait rage sur le sol français, mais aussi dans les airs. Plusieurs escadrilles d’avions, venues du Royaume-Uni, viennent bombarder les bases et les sites stratégiques de l’armée allemande. Dans le ciel poitevin, des dizaines d’avions B-17 "Flying Fortress" et B-24 "Liberator" survolent la région. Parmi eux, se trouve le B-17 au matricule 42-6037.

Partis au combat pour sauver la France occupée

Parti de l’est de l’Angleterre, plus précisément de l’aérodrome Rougham de Bury St Edmunds, un équipage composé de onze soldats américains se trouve dans ce bombardier. Il est 11 heures, le 31 décembre, lorsque les forces alliées viennent de bombarder la base aérienne de Cognac-Châteaubernard. Sérieusement endommagé par les tirs et les obus de la Flak – Flugabwehrkanone , qui signifie canon antiaérien en français – , la compagnie espère rejoindre la côte anglaise.

Située dans une zone entre Saintes et Corme-Royal, l’escouade américaine est poursuivie par cinq chasseurs Messerschmitt   109 de l’armée de l’air allemande. Après en avoir abattu quelques-uns, le bombardier américain est achevé et explose en plein vol. Après une chute libre de plus de deux kilomètres de haut, l’avion s’écrase dans un champ du village de Corme-Royal.

Un spectacle effroyable

Parmi les onze militaires, trois d’entre eux ont tenté de sauter en parachute avant le crash pour espérer avoir la vie sauve, en vain. Leur parachute étant enflammé par l’explosion, les témoins de cette scène d’horreur voient trois corps s’écraser sur le sol à des hauteurs vertigineuses. Quatre autres soldats meurent dans le crash, leurs corps en partie brûlés. Les quatre survivants à cet accident ont été capturés par les troupes nazies et ont été emmenés en Allemagne.

De nombreux témoins ont assisté à ce drame. Il est vrai que ce n’est pas tous les jours, même en temps de guerre, que l’on voit un bombardier américain faire une chute libre au-dessus de sa tête. Ce fut le cas de Paulette Barbieri, apprentie coiffeuse à ce moment-là, qui a réussi à prendre quelques clichés du crash.

Tout ce récit et ses témoignages ont été récupérés par Michel Souris. Ancien chef de police et aujourd’hui âgé de 80 ans, ce passionné de la Seconde Guerre mondiale   épluche, décortique le moindre détail qu’il peut recueillir.

Le devoir de mémoire, ces petites histoires qui font la grande Histoire

“ Cela fait depuis 1991 que je travaille sur la récupération de la mémoire des hommes pour la guerre ”, explique Michel Souris. C’est notamment grâce à Napoléon Iᵉʳ et à la suite d'un échange avec un vétéran de la guerre 14-18 qu’il s’est entrepris pour cette passion. “ Ce qui est important, ce sont les petits détails du vécu au quotidien par les gens. On a tous les jours devant nous des personnes aux cheveux blancs, ce que j’appelle la mémoire vivante. Ils vont partir dans la tombe avec leurs souvenirs et on ne les aura pas interrogés. Chacun a une mémoire et une histoire inédite ”.

Après avoir retrouvé plusieurs pièces de l’avion qui s’était crashé à Corme-Royal, il souhaitait la création d’une stèle en mémoire de ces soldats oubliés.   " Cela fait des décennies que j’ai travaillé sur ce dossier. Chaque crash est un cas spécifique. Depuis plusieurs années, ces hommes, morts à Corme-Royal, ont été oubliés , raconte-t-il. Depuis, la municipalité a fini par m’entendre et mon initiative a, en quelque sorte, déclenché un peu toute l’opération. Ils ont donc fait installer une stèle dans laquelle se trouve une vingtaine d’éléments de cet avion écrasé le 31 décembre 1943 ".

Le 20 avril dernier, une centaine de personnes ont assisté à cet évènement en l'honneur de ces soldats américains. " On ne pouvait pas faire une stèle ou un mémorial, sur sept américains morts pour nous et pour leur pays, sans que les Américains viennent ". Le vice-consul, Aaron Michael Testa, de l’ambassade des États-Unis de Paris, a également assisté à la cérémonie et a emmené une gerbe pour cette occasion spéciale. Un temps oubliés, ces soldats qui ont combattu pour la France, leur nation et la liberté, sont désormais honorés.
