Dubai Metro Guide 2024: Fares, Zones, and Timings
Main Points
Your Easy Guide to Dubai Metro Cards: Fares, Zones, and More
Dubai Metro is a modern and driverless rapid transit rail network managed by the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), serving various areas in Dubai. Launched on September 9, 2009, it has become a cutting-edge rapid transit system, providing a safe and dependable means of transportation for both residents and visitors across the city.
The metro consists of two primary lines – the Red Line and the Green Line. The Red Line commences at Centrepoint and concludes at EXPO 2020 Metro Station. Simultaneously, the Green Line originates from Etisalat by E& and concludes its route at Creek Metro Station. These lines efficiently connect different parts of Dubai, facilitating convenient travel for passengers.
If you are looking for more information on Dubai Metro, including details about timings, ticket prices, various lines and stations, as well as practical tips for a hassle-free travel experience, this guide is a valuable resource for both new and seasoned metro users.
What are the timings of Dubai Metro?
The Dubai Metro operates consistently throughout the week, with slight variations in timings during weekends. Here are the updated Dubai Metro hours for all lines in 2024:
- Monday to Thursday: 05:00 am to 12:00 am
- Friday: 05:00 am to 01:00 am
- Saturday: 05:00 am to 12:00 am

For essential trips outside metro operating hours, passengers have the option to book an RTA taxi or use ride-sharing applications like Careem and Uber.
What are the main Dubai Metro stations and zones?
Navigating the Dubai Metro is facilitated by two main lines: the Red Line, covering the route from Centrepoint (R11) to Expo 2020 (R76), and the Green Line, which travels from Etisalat by E& (G11) to Creek (G30). Additionally, the Route 2020 Branch Line is in operation between Jabal Ali (R38) and UAE Exchange (R42).
Anticipated for completion in 2029, the Dubai Metro will introduce a new ‘third line’ known as the Blue Line. This line will feature 14 stations, including three interchange stations connecting the existing Red and Green Lines.
The Dubai Metro map for 2024 illustrates the intersections of the Red and Green lines at Burjuman and Union. The map is color-coded for easy route identification. Train frequency is generally every 3 to 7 minutes during peak hours and every 7 to 15 minutes during off-peak hours, providing commuters with efficient and timely transportation options.

How to use the metro in dubai.
In large cities you can usually use a metro network that makes the most visited places in the city easily accessible. Also in Dubai since 2009 this is the perfect means of transport to take you to the most famous places safely, quickly and cheaply. The body responsible for this in Dubai is the RTA or Roads and Transport Authority .
The RTA is the global body for public transport such as metro, tram and bus, but also the taxis in Dubai are controlled by the RTA.
What are the opening hours, how much does a day ticket cost, how do you buy a ticket, … In this guide we explain how the Dubai metro works and what you need to know about this means of transport in the emirate.
Dubai metro routes
The metro network in Dubai consists of 3 different lines: the Red Line, Green Line and the latest new one to be commissioned at the end of 2019, Route 2020.
Last new route will provide a connection to Expo 2020
The metro runs above ground more than half of all routes. This makes traveling with the metro even more pleasant due to the huge skyscrapers you encounter.
The Red Line is the longest route of the 3 and has a total length of 52 km. This is the most used metro route in Dubai. Dubai International Airport, Burj Khalifa, Mall Of The Emirates and Dubai Marina are just a few stations where the Red Line stops.
In total there are 29 stations on this route, 3 of which give you the option to transfer to another metro line, Union (18), Bur Juman (19) and Nakheel Harbor & Tower (38). It also has 2 stations with connections to the Dubai tram.
The green metro line runs along the two sides of the Dubai Creek. The route is therefore in the part where you can find the traditional souks.
It has 20 stations, two of which connect to the Red Line. The total length of this route is 22.5 km and therefore less than half the longer Red Line.
This route is specially made to connect the Expo 2020 and Dubai World Central with the existing Red Line. At the Nakheel station on the Red Line there is a connection to the new route.
The total travel time of the 15 km long route is 16 minutes and this along with 7 new stations, 5 above ground and 2 underground. Later there is the possibility to further extend this route.
Metro trains
In Dubai, all metro trains are driverless, which means that the trains run completely computer-controlled without a driver.
The trains have a maximum speed of 90 km / h which brings the average to 50 km / h due to the many stops.
3 different classes
Each metro set has 3 different classes, Regular or Standard, Gold and Women with children. Each metro consists of 5 trains of which 3 with standard class, 1 wagon with twice as expensive gold class and the latter is only intended for women with or without children.
As a woman you have no obligation but the right to take the special wagon, also the standard and gold class is accessible for women with children.
Metro stations
You can see the metro stations from far away by their curved roof, partly covered with a golden color. The stations are immaculate, you really can’t find any dirt!
Each metro station is also decorated in one of the 4 themes, air, earth, fire and water.
Different types of tickets
As in all major cities, the metro is usually the easiest and cheapest way to get around.
In Dubai, traveling by metro is also relatively cheap. The metro network is accessible with a prepaid chip card, as we know in other world cities. This chip card is called the Nol card .
There are 4 different Nol cards: Silver, Gold, Blue and Red. Of all these chip cards, only one applies to tourists and that is the Red Nol card.
You can charge this up to 10 single journeys or 5 daily passes, after which you must buy a new card.
Red Nol ticket
The chip card itself costs 2 AED ($ 0.50) and can be used for 10 single journeys or 5 day passes. The card is valid for 90 days and can be used for the RTA metro, tram and bus.
Day tickets:
- Regular Class 20 AED ($ 5.5)
- Gold Class 40 AED ($ 11)
Single trip regular class:
- Tier 1: 4 AED ($ 1)
- Tier 2: 6 AED ($ 1.6)
- Tier 3: 8.5 AED ($ 2.30)
Single trip gold class:
- Tier 1: 8 AED ($ 2.2)
- Tier 2: 12 AED ($ 3.3)
Zones & tiers
Public transport in Dubai is divided into zones: if you only travel in 1 zone then you have Tier 1 for example.
Travel within 1 zone or adjacent zones if the journey is less than 3 km.
Depart in 1 zone and travel to an adjacent.
Cross three or more zones.

Where and how to buy tickets?
Tickets can be purchased at any metro station at a sort of ATM. Here you can upload the desired ride on your Nol card. However, it may be a little awkward the first time because you don’t know how it works.
That is no problem, there is always a ticket counter with an employee in every station. Ask which ticket fits best for the ride or rides you want to do and he will give you the best solution.
If you do multiple journeys in one day, it is almost always cheaper to purchase a day pass, which will cost you 20 AED or about $ 5.5.
Once you arrive at the gates, after scanning you can continue to the platform of the metro.
Dubai metro map 2020
With this handy map you get an overview of the routes and where the metro stops everywhere. We regularly update these if there are changes in the metro network.
RTA Smartphone app
With the RTA Wojhati Journey Planner app you can easily plan a route to your destination.
The app gives you all possible solutions to get to your destination. Times, stations, platforms, …
You can download the app for IOS and Android . To plan your route on a desktop or laptop you can go to RTA Journey Planner .
Opening hours
The Red and Green Line have separate opening hours: the longest route is open just a little earlier.
- Saturday to Wednesday 05:00 to 00:00
- Thursday 5 a.m. – 1 p.m.
- Friday 10:00 – 01:00
Green Line:
- Saturday to Wednesday 05:30 to 00:00
- Thursday 5:30 AM – 1:00 AM
For any changes to opening hours or information about closed metro stations you can visit the RTA website .
The closing time has nothing to do with the last metro you can take. This means that the last metro that you can take must arrive at the end station somewhere on the route befor closing time.
An example: you depart from “Dubai International Terminal 3” and want to go to “UAE exchange”, then the last metro is at 11 p.m. For example, the metro arrives at the end station just before closing time. You can easily find out the last metro in each station on the RTA timetable.

If you are planning to be out and about during the long holiday and want to ensure you catch the last Metro back home, there is a simple and convenient way to find out the timings of the last train from the nearest station.
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) offers commuters an easy method to check the last train timings for various stations and routes. It’s important to note that the last train timings are not fixed, as they vary depending on whether it is a weekday, weekend, or a public holiday.
To find out when you can catch the last train, follow these steps:
- Visit the RTA website, rta.ae, and click on the ‘Public transport’ tab located at the top of the screen. If you are using the mobile version of the website, select the menu on the left side of the screen and tap on ‘Public transport’.
- Next, choose ‘Metro’ and click on ‘View timetables’. The website will then provide you with essential information about the Red Line, Green Line, and Branch Line (which extends from Jabal Ali Station on the Red Line to the UAE Exchange station on Sheikh Zayed Road E11). Look for the ‘Get the last train time’ service. On a desktop, it will be on the right side of the screen. If you are using a mobile phone, simply scroll down a bit to find the service.
By following these steps, you can easily access the last train timings and plan your journey accordingly.
- Please provide the following information:
- Choose the specific day of your travel. 2. Select the Metro line you will be using – Red Line, Green Line, or Branch Line. 3. Indicate the direction you will be heading in the Metro. (Please note that Metro trains operate in two directions, with each line having two terminal stations. For instance, the Green Line extends from Etisalat Metro Station to Creek Metro Station. If you are boarding the Metro from a station on the Green Line, you must decide which of these two stations you intend to travel towards. The maps displayed at each station clearly outline the stations on each line.) 4. Specify your current station. 5. The system will then provide you with the precise departure time of the last train from your station for the day.
We kindly request you to provide the aforementioned details for a seamless Metro experience.

How to Use the Metro on Your Trip to Dubai
Naufal MQ/Getty Images
You’d be hard-pressed to find a more user-friendly public transport system than the Dubai Metro. Worlds apart from the maze that is the London Tube or New York City Subway, the Dubai Metro is state-of-the-art, spotless, safe , and supremely easy to navigate. Spanning 46 miles, Dubai Metro has two lines and offers hassle-free connections to the city’s bus and tram networks. For tips on ticketing, etiquette and the best stops for major attractions, find out how to use the metro on your next trip to Dubai.
Getting Around Dubai
There are just two lines in the Dubai Metro system, which makes cross-city travel a breeze. The Red Line roughly follows the path of Dubai’s main thoroughfare, Sheikh Zayed Road, running from Rashidiya in the north to UAE Exchange station in Jebel Ali, in the south. The Green Line services the areas surrounding Dubai Creek, Old Dubai and Deira in the north. The two lines interchange at BurJurman and Union stations. To plan your journey online, visit wojhati.rta.ae .
Airport Connections
If you’ve just touched down at Dubai International Airport, one of the cheapest ways to get into the city is via the Dubai Metro Red Line, which stops at Airport Terminal 1 and 3. Most visitors will board the UAE Exchange-bound train, traveling south to Dubai Mall , Business Bay, Dubai Marina and other key destinations.
Exploring Old Dubai
You could be forgiven for thinking Dubai is all skyscrapers, luxury hotels and high-end restaurants, but beyond the glitz of Downtown and Dubai Marina lies the beating heart of Old Dubai. To explore Old Dubai via metro, take the Red Line to BurJurman station, then switch to the Green Line for Al Ras station, near the Deira Gold Souk and Spice Souk. Take an abra (small wooden boat) to the other side of Dubai Creek to wander around the Textile Souk and Al Fahidi Historic District, home to Al Fahidi Fort, Dubai Museum , and winding alleyways filled with local artisans and cafes. South of BurJurman on the Red Line, alight at ADCB station for Al Karama market, one of Dubai’s oldest shopping streets.
Shopping and Sightseeing
Dubai’s record-busting tourist attractions are easily accessed via the Red Line. Alight at Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station to visit Burj Khalifa , the world’s tallest building, then put your credit card through its paces in The Dubai Mall , the largest shopping mall on Earth. Further south, stop at Mall of the Emirates to browse luxury labels and hit the slopes of Ski Dubai . Or spend a few hours wandering among the six international ‘courts’ of Ibn Battuta Mall , a unique shopping complex inspired by the 14th-century adventures of Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta. Note that Ibn Battuta station is currently closed due to construction for Expo 2020, so switch to the free shuttle bus at Jumeirah Lakes Towers station.
Coastal Connections
To enjoy in the restaurants, bars and hotels of Dubai Marina , take the Red Line to the DAMAC Properties or Jumeirah Lakes Towers stations. Each station connects with the Dubai Tram network, which covers Jumeirah Beach Residence, Dubai Media City and Knowledge Village. Beachgoers, take the tram from DAMAC to Jumeriah Beach Residence 1 or 2—sand, sea and foodare just a five-minute walk away. Palm Jumeirah is slightly harder to access—board a tram to Palm Jumeirah station, then take a 10-minute walk to Gateway Station for a monorail ride straight up the trunk to Atlantis The Palm .
Taking Care of Business
If you’re in Dubai for work, the Red Line will take you to key commercial hubs at the World Trade Center, Financial Center and Business Bay.
You can purchase single, return and day-pass tickets at vending machines and ticket offices in the metro stations. If you plan on frequently using the metro and other forms of public transport, such as the Dubai bus or tram, consider buying a Nol Red Ticket, a rechargeable card for trips around town. Prices start at 2 dirham for a short journey, and day passes cost 14 dirham for unlimited rides. Kids under the age of 5, or shorter than 35 inches (90 cm), travel for free.
Travel Tips
- The Dubai Metro is a fully automated, driverless train. It’s fast, efficient and frequent—so when the doors start closing, don’t make a run for it. Instead, just hold back and wait for the next train, which will only be a few minutes away.
- There’s a reason those carriages are spotless—don’t eat, drink or chew gum, litter, or put your feet on the seats. If you do, you may incur a fine.
- There are special carriages for women and children—gents, stick to the other carriages to avoid a fine. There are also private Gold Class cabins at the front or rear of the train, which are off-limits unless you’ve purchased a special ticket.
- If possible, avoid the morning and afternoon rush, when the cabins and platforms are more crowded .

Timetable Metro in Dubai
Dubai metro zones.
Dubai has an unmanned metro system that allows you to cross a large part of the city quickly and cheaply. Dubai’s sights lie particularly around Sheikh Zayed Road and the metro lines. This is why the metro is the ideal way to explore Dubai.
The subways run 7 days a week from early in the morning until midnight. The start time and end time depend on the metro line. The exception is Friday, on this day the subways start running at 10 a.m. See the timetable below for the complete timetable of the two metro lines in Dubai. The subways run every +/- 8 minutes from the Rashidiya metro station (near Dubai International Airport) along the busy Sheikh Zayed Road highway towards Jebel Ali (UAE Exchange station).
Thanks to their striking architectural style, the metro stations can often be recognized from some distance. Almost every metro station has multiple exits on both sides of the road so that you can quickly go in various directions from the metro station. The metro stations at the Dubai Mall and the Mall of the Emirates are connected with the malls thanks to an air conditioning bridge. You can easily walk into the mall from the metro without first having to go outside, especially in the summer months when the temperature is well above 40 degrees this is very pleasant.
Do you want to plan a route in Dubai with the metro or bus? Then you can use the Wojhati website or app . This is the official route planner app of the RTA. RTA is the organization that arranges all public transport in Dubai. With the Wojhati Journey Planner app you can easily and quickly plan your route from A to B.
The download links of the various app stores such as the Apple App store or the Google Play for Android phones can be found on this page . Click on one of the icons of your operating system to download the app via the marketplace.
Red and Green Metro Lines
The Dubai metro has two lines, a red and a green line. The red line is mainly above the ground and continues further from the BurJuman station below the ground and comes to the surface again at the GGICO metro stop. The green line is mainly underground and runs only between the Salah Al Din up to the Etisalat terminus. Between Burjuman and the Creek terminus the metro runs above ground. All stations have an Arabic and English name as well as a number so that you can easily remember the stations.
Red line The red line has a length of 52 kilometers and has a total of 29 stations, some of which are currently closed. Well-known metro stations on the red line are the station at the Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall, the Mall of the Emirates and the Sobha Realty Metro Station. The Sobha Realty Metro Station (also know as DAMAC properties station) is near the Dubai Marina and from here you can quickly walk to the Jumeirah Beach Walk.
The stations DMCC Metro Station Towers and Sobha Realty Metro Station have a direct connection to the Dubai Tram . You can easily walk to the tram to travel further to the Beach or the monorail station for Palm Jumeirah.
Green line The green line is 23 kilometers long and has a total of 20 stations. The green line is mainly in the older part of Dubai around the Dubai Creek and Dubai International Airport. The green line runs from Etisalat by a loop under the old center through to Dubai Health Care City.

Dubai Metro – Route 2020 extension
From January 1, 2021, the new extension of the Dubai Metro has been open. The “Route 2020” extension built for the Dubai Expo includes 3 new stations + a converted station. The new metro line in Dubai has a total length of 15 kilometers and is largely above ground, and also has two stations that are underground. In total, the line is 11.8 kilometers above the ground and the route goes 3.2 kilometers underground.
The new route starts at the Jabal Ali metro station (formerly known as the Nakheel Harbor and Tower station) which is on the red line and runs through the Dubai Expo site. The new line goed through a number of popular areas such as Dubai Investments Park, Discovery Gardens, Al Furjan and the Jumeirah Golf Estates.
The Jabal Ali station has become a transfer station since the opening of the new route. Since January 1, 2021, 4 stations of the route have been opened, the other 3 stations will follow at a later stage. In addition, there are a number of stations that may be added to the metro line in the future. At all new metro stations it is possible to transfer to one or more bus lines or to take a taxi at the taxi rank.
The following four stations are open from January 1, 2021: – Jebel Ali Station (transfer option to the red metro line) – The Gardens Station – Discovery Gardens – Al Furjan – Jumeirah Golf Estates Station (underground station) – Dubai Investment Park Station (underground station) – Expo Station
The Dubai metros run 7 days a week. The red and green lines have different services, below you can see exactly when which line starts and stops driving. The frequency with which the metro trains run varies between 6 to 9 minutes.
Red Line Saturday to Wednesday: 5:30 AM to midnight Thursday: 5:30 AM to 01:00 AM Friday: 10:00 AM to 01:00 AM
Green line Saturday to Wednesday: 5:50 AM to midnight Thursday: 5:50 AM to 01:00 AM Friday: 10:00 AM to 01:00 AM
Dubai metro ticket prices
The day ticket is an interesting way of traveling for tourists. With this day ticket you can travel unlimited in both the metro, water taxi, tram and bus. The cost of a day ticket for public transport can be purchased for 20 AED per person. Children under 5 or less than 90 cm can travel for free on the metro with an adult. Please note, the day ticket for public transport is not valid on bus 105 to the Dubai Miracle Garden.
Particularly during rush hour, the coupes of the metro can be very full, which can be especially annoying if you have to travel longer parts with the metro. Fortunately, the metro also has a Gold Class coupe, where you can travel a lot quieter at a slightly higher price and are almost certain of a seat.
The Nol card The most common way to travel by metro in Dubai is through the Nol Card . This card you purchase once and then can easily and unlimitedly charge at the counter or at one of the many ticket machines. Have you purchased a Nol card and is there still balance on the card when your holiday is over? You can have this balance paid out at one of the manned counters at the metro stations. Per card a fee of 5 AED is charged for paying out.
There are various types of NOL cards available, for the current information and rates we would like to refer you to our special page about the NOL card on our website or to the website of the NOL card: http://www.nol.ae .
Make sure you check in and out, if you forget this you can get a fine of 200 AED. At the metro stops it is almost impossible to walk outside without checking out, but there are no gates at the tram.
The Dubai metro is divided into four different zones: zones 1, 2, 6 and 5. The costs for a single journey with the metro depend on the number of zones you cross. If you stay in the same zone, the rate is lower than crossing two or three zones.

Dubai Metro services remain impacted after unprecedented rain in the UAE last week. While the Red Line has become operational in both directions, the metro is still not halting at these four stations - Onpassive, Equiti, Al Mashreq and Energy.
As operations remain affected, stations across the emirate witnessed massive crowding during peak hours.
In an advisory, the Roads and Transport (RTA) has urged commuters to "avoid using the Metro during peak hours" and plan their journeys according to the stations currently operational until all stations return to normal operations.
Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels .
RTA also announced that "due to ongoing efforts to manage the impacts on certain Metro Stations, we want to inform you about changes to the Metro Red Line schedule in Dubai."
Dubai Metro is operational from Centrepoint to Expo 2020 and UAE exchange stations. The transport authority also said that for commuters coming from Centrepoint Metro station, changing to another station is a must at Business Bay or Al Khail stations. RTA said, "The train will either be replaced or traffic will be diverted to buses to ensure a smooth transfer to the following stations."
Therefore, individuals must alight at Business Bay or Al Khail stations and use shuttle buses to reach the next station. However, commuters are citing infrequent shuttle bus services that aggravated their travel woes.
Khaleej Times journalist Laraib Anwer reported overcrowding at Abu Hail station on Monday morning. Metro authorities tasked with crowd management instructed passengers to wait at the ground level before granting them platform access. Some commuters waited more than 20 minutes before being permitted to get onto the platforms.
Watch the video below:
Meanwhile, there was a huge rush of commuters at Metro Red Line's Red Business Bay Metro Station (Al Safa side) on Monday morning. The traffic volume was on the rise on the Sheikh Zayed Road near Al Safa toll gate towards the World Trade Centre.
The RTA has urged commuters to follow instruction signages at metro stations and seek guidance from Dubai Metro staff.

Information about the Dubai Metro
Dubai Metro Tickets
Dubai Metro tickets must be purchased in the form of a Nol card. No other payment form is possible for the Metro. A Nol card is like a credit card that holds either a balance or a specific season ticket for travelling on a lot of the public transport in Dubai including the Metro, buses and the tram.
No Cash Payments
You cannot pay by cash or credit card to travel on the Dubai Metro, you need to buy a Nol card. However, you can top your Nol card up using cash or credit card at each of the stations.
The prices for travel on the Dubai Metro, Tram and Buses are as follows:
You can work out how many zones you will travel through by checking out the Metro Map . Prices apply to the number of zones and do not take account of the actual zone numbers.
Standard tickets are those purchased by buying a red Nol card so are likely to be those charged to tourists or visitors. Pre-paid means where you have purchased a Silver, Blue or Gold Nol card.
Concessionary Nol cards are available to students, disabled and elderly people on registration and application. Standard Blue Nol cards have benefits including the purchase of season tickets.
Season Tickets
New season ticket passes were introduced with the opening of the Dubai Tram in 2014 and the prices are as follows:
Metro One Day Pass or Not?
You should work out how many journeys you are likely to make in one day as a one day pass may be better. The one day pass also includes travel on the Dubai Tram and Dubai buses.
If you do not purchase a one day ticket you can still get charged more than 20 dirhams if you make a lot of journeys as travel is not capped at 20 dirhams unless you buy the one day ticket. You can find out more details about the One Day pass here .
The above tickets can only be purchased on particular Nol cards:
You can get the one day card on a Red ticket. You can get the weekly ticket on a Blue, Silver or Gold Nol card.
You can charge the Red ticket with up to 5 one day tickets – you need to buy each ticket on the day of travel and not in advance and it is only valid up until midnight of the day of purchase.
The remaining season tickets can only be purchased on a Blue Nol Card or a registered Silver or Gold Nol card. Blue cards require an application form with ID and photo.
Therefore if you are travelling to Dubai as a visitor your only options for a season ticket are the day or weekly passes.

Those ticket prices are invalid, or I’m getting something wrong… I’m travelling between Discovery Gardens and EXPO 2020 which is in the same zone, but I’m keep being charged with AED7.5…
Hi, 7.5 dirhams is the maximum single fare and it is also charged when you don’t tap in and out correctly. If you think you are tapping correctly then you need to speak to customer services.
If i travel from emirates metro station to union, then how many zones are there & how much will it cost for 15 days with silver nol card pass?
HI, unfortunately we can’t calculate costs for individuals. All the information needed is on the site mostly on the map and tickets pages as well as this page.
I am planning a trip to Dubai in month of April for 6N/7D. If I purchased Gold Class Metro 7 day pass which is AED 220, is it cheaper? These are my excursions would be, Dubai Mall, Dubai Marina Mall & Yacht club, Dubai Fountain, Burj Khalifa, Old Dubai tour, Wild Wadi, Palm Jumeirah etc
You will need to work out the journey prices and see if that is less than the cost of the 7 day ticket. Sorry, we are not able to do this for you. Check out this page for more info.
I will be in Dubai for 3 days in 2 weeks. My zones gonna be 5-6-2-1, which tickles I need to buy?
Hi, we can’t advise which tickets as we don’t know which journeys you will take so check out this page.
Can I use Red nol card with one day pass to take traditional abra ?
Hi, no the abra fares are separate at present but it only costs 1 dirham for example if you want to cross the creek.
I’m thinking of buing silver NOL card. I will be traveling with wife and 2 kids (8years and 4 years) I’ve see that the 4 year kid can travel free of charge.
If i will be toping up the silver NOL card with weekly ticket does it use the balance from the card and instead of paying 80 (for 2 zones) i use 19 from the card and pay additional 61 ?
Hi, as we understand it, you will need to top up your Nol card with enough money to buy your weekly ticket and also have a minimum balance of 7.50 dirhams.
I was in Dubai during the period from 4.1.2024 to 10.01.2024, first bought NOL silver and then immediately i bought 7 days NOL silver pass for 7 days for all zones…. its comes to 135 AED… How will I get my journey with cost ?
NOL card still showing 19 AED balance, till what period this balance is valid?
Sorry I don’t understand “How will I get my journey with cost?” Silver Nol cards are valid for 5 years
Hello, I will be in Dubai for only 2 days and a half: December 24th, 25th and 26th morning. If I buy the daily ticket on the red card I will be allowed to travel all metro long without consider zones, won’t be? So I can buy on the same red card daily pass for 24, daily pass for 25th and the single ticket hotel>airport T3 for the last day?
Hi Carlo, yes if you buy a one day ticket on the red nol then you can travel on all zones. So yes you can get a daily pass on the red Nol on 24th and 25th but then will need a separate red nol card for the single journey on 26th.
If I have 7 days pass on my silver nol card within only zone 1 and I want to travel from zone 1 to zone 2 then will I be charged with 5 dirhams or only the difference 5-3=2 dirhams?
We don’t have that specific information – you will need to contact the RTA to ask this.
Hello, we want to buy a 7-day travel pass for zones 2 and 6. We have a few questions. 1) do we get a card with a travel card for 80 dirhams, or do we need to pay extra for the card separately? 2) If we want to use this card to travel to other zones, will we be able to top it up and pay with it like a red card? 3) During the trip to zones 2 and 6, is it necessary to have some kind of balance on the card.
1) You will need to buy a silver Nol card – see Nol Cards for further info – you can add the weekly ticket to that card 2) Yes you can add money to that card for trips out of the 2 zones (plus it already includes a credit) 3) If you have the weekly ticket on that card then you can travel in those 2 zones freely without a balance, otherwise you will need 7.50 dirhams
Hello there, I will be visiting Dubai soon, My Queries are 1) Can I but a 1 zone weekly pass and add some extra money on the same card for other extra travel like paying for bus or ferry, paying for bus to Abu Dhabi, Global village and Miracle garden, paying park entry fee or others like that 2) Do a foreign student also get 50% discount on metro ticket
Hi, yes you can add extra money onto the Nol card that you put your weekly pass on. That would enable to pay for bus trips that are not included in the weekly ticket like to Abu Dhabi. In terms of entry fees you would have to check with the attractions themselves whether they take payment by nol as we don’t have a list, sorry.
Sorry, 2) you can only get the 50% discount with a blue nol card. In theory you should be able to get this as an overseas student but in practice it may be difficult as it does ask for an Emirates ID when you apply so you may have to go to an RTA office to try and get hold of one.
Hi! I’m hoping you can help with my very vague question! We visited a few years ago and I’m sure we bought daily passes. This was fine until we wanted to go to Global Village and were told our passes could be used to get out there (I seem to recall they said we needed a weekly pass to cover that area?). Does that sound correct and if so, so you happen to know the rule please? I’m particularly concerned as we will be staying in Jumeirah Village Circle so I need to be sure the pass will cover buses out there. Many, many thanks for your help, Helen
Hi, Global Village does not come within the public transport zones so your one day passes wouldn’t have covered that area (this may change in future) but Jumeirah Village Triangle is on a bus route that is covered by the one day ticket so you should be fine.
Thank you. Is transport to Global Village included if we get a weekly pass? On the website it says routes 102, 103, 104 and 106 all go there? Also I assume I am able to buy a weekly pass from the airport station? Many thanks for your help, it’s genuinely appreciated.
No, it isn’t included in the weekly ticket – I believe it is 10 dirhams each way. Yes you should be able to get a weekly ticket from the airport – terminals 1 and 3 have metro stations attached.
Thank you for your help 🙂
Hi, I have several questions. 1. Can I buy a day pass on a silver NOL card or only pay by trip or week pass? 2. If I buy a silver NOL card and go 1 zone one day, can I use the same card to go 2 zones the next assuming I have enough money loaded on the card? 3. If I buy a day pass on a red NOL card one day can I buy a ticket for 1 zone on the same card the next day or do I need to buy a different red card for each number of zones I want to travel (e.g. one card for 2 zone travel, a different card for 1 zone travel, a third card for a day pass, etc.)
Hi, here are the answers to the best of our knowledge: 1. No, you can only buy a day pass on a red Nol card. 2. Yes 3. You need to buy a different Nol card for different types of journeys so yes, your example is correct. In this case it may be better to buy a silver Nol card.

Planning to use the Metro from Dubai International Airport (DXB)? Here is all you need to know about the timings, baggage policy and routes
Living in uae.
How you can plan your trip from the airport, using public transport
Dubai: If you are a regular Metro user, you may already know the Metro timings, but if it’s your first time in the city, and you want to experience travelling on the Dubai Metro from the airport, here are a few things you need to keep in mind to make sure your journey is smooth and hassle-free.
Dubai International Airport (DXB) Metro timings
There are two Metro stations located near the Dubai International Airport (DXB) – one at Airport Terminal 1 and the other at Airport Terminal 3. Both the stations are on the Dubai Metro Red Line.
Dubai International Airport (DXB) Terminal 1
• Monday to Thursday – 5.06am to 11.59pm • Friday – 5.06am to 1.01am • Saturday – 5.06am to 12am • Sunday – 8.17am to 11.59pm.
Dubai International Airport (DXB) Terminal 3
• Monday to Thursday – 5.08am to 12.01pm • Friday – 5.08am to 1.03am • Saturday – 5.06am to 12.02am • Sunday – 8.19am to 12.01am
nol Cards and tickets
If you are taking the Metro for the first time, it is important to understand that the ‘nol card’ – which is the official payment option for public transportation in Dubai – comes in four categories. You can buy the tickets at the counter or through the ticket vending machines in the station.
1. nol Red ticket - The red ticket is a disposable paper card, which can be purchased for Dh2. It enables you to make single trips and pay only for the exact trip you travel. However, it is important to note that on this ticket, you can only choose one mode of transport at a time – either the bus, Metro or tram.
2. nol silver card - For a one-time payment of Dh25 (with Dh19 that can be spent on services), the silver card is valid for five years.
3. nol Gold card - The Gold card allows users the ability to access the Gold Class cabins on Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram. To get the card, you need to pay Dh25.
4. nol blue card - This is a personalised card which requires activation and is linked to your Emirates ID. You need to provide your photograph and Emirates ID at the Metro ticket office and pay Dh70 (with Dh20 that can be spent on services).
The nol card is issued by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
How are the Metro fares calculated?
The public transport system is divided into seven zones across the city, and fares are calculated based on the number of zones passed. So, you could switch from a Metro trip to a bus and then a tram and if you are in the same zone, it will be considered as a single trip.
Dubai Metro baggage policy
As per RTA, only two suitcases are permitted per passenger. This includes:
• One large suitcase - Dimensions should not exceed 81cm x 58cm x 30cm • One small suitcase - Dimensions should not exceed 55cm x 38cm x 20cm
All luggage must be stowed in the dedicated luggage area, which can be found in each cabin.
- What is the Nol card and how can I get it?
Does Dubai World Central (DWC) have a Metro station?
The Dubai World Central (DWC) located in the Jebel Ali area, does not have its own Metro station. However, the closest stations are the Ibn Battuta Metro station and Expo 2020 Metro Station.
To reach the Ibn Battuta Metro station or Expo 2020 Metro Station from Dubai World Central (DWC), travel on the F55 bus route, which will cost you around Dh7.50. Alternatively, you can take a taxi from the airport to reach either of these stations and the fare will range from Dh55 to Dh75.

Public urged to avoid Dubai Metro during rush hour as flood clean-up continues
Transport authorities call on commuters to plan trips in advance following widespread disruption from storms.
The Dubai Metro network has been affected by last week's heavy flooding. Antonie Robertson / The National
Transport authorities on Tuesday urged the public to temporarily limit their use of the Dubai Metro during peak hours following widespread disruption to services caused by last week's unprecedented storms .
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority sent the plea to users of its mobile app as efforts continue to restore all routes affected by the adverse weather.
A number of stations on the Green and Red lines of the citywide network were taken out of operation due to heavy flooding.
The UAE experienced its largest single day of rainfall in 75 years last Tuesday, with a major clean-up operation still in full force one week on.
"We encourage you to reduce using the Metro during peak hours," the RTA message stated.
"Plan your trips ahead, use alternative stations and public transport until all stations return to normal operation."
The RTA said it appreciated the "co-operation and understanding" of commuters "during these challenging times".
Disruption to services
The RTA said on its website all 20 stations on the Green Line of the transport network and now back up and running.
A reduced schedule is still in operation on the larger Red Line, which features 35 stations, with trains not stopping at several stations.
Dubai Metro is in service on the line from Centrepoint station to Expo 2020 station and UAE Exchange stations, but is not stopping at the Onpassive, Equiti, Mashreq and Energy stations.
Travellers boarding at Centrepoint are advised that trains will be switched at Business Bay and Al Khail stations, with replacement bus services being laid on.

Sheikh Hamdan hails flood response
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, on Tuesday praised the emirate's response to the extreme weather.
He emphasised the emirate's ability to overcome challenges as he chaired a meeting of Dubai's Executive Council.
He commended the efforts of government and emergency response teams, including the Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management, and the solidarity of the public.
“Dubai has once again demonstrated the strength and cohesiveness of its society; one that is based on unity, solidarity and readiness to face and overcome challenges," Sheikh Hamdan said, in comments carried by state news agency Wam.
"Dubai is blessed with its people and, on behalf of the leadership, we say: thank you.”
During the meeting, Sheikh Hamdan directed government departments to develop a comprehensive action plan to deal with extreme weather events.
More than 25,000 personnel and volunteers were involved in the emergency response, in addition to about 5,000 security patrols, emergency vehicles, tankers, buses, and water pump operators.

30 Beautiful Subway And Metro Stations You NEED To See
Posted: April 26, 2024 | Last updated: April 26, 2024
Underground art
A metro station is probably one of the last places you’d expect to find great art and breathtaking interiors. However, there are a few stations that hide exceptional design and art installations under city streets around the world.
Forget dirty, badly lit platforms painted in dull colors, because we’ve sought out some of the world’s coolest subway and metro stations.
Alisher Navoiy station, Tashkent, Uzbekistan
Although pretty much all of the stations on Tashkent's metro system have beautiful and unique interiors, this one, named after a famous poet, is considered to be the most spectacular. The highlight of this station, located on the Oʻzbekiston Line, is the magnificent ceiling, but travelers should also pay attention to the ceramic murals depicting scenes from the poet's most well-known works.
Msheireb station, Doha, Qatar
One of the newest metro systems in the world, the Doha Metro opened in May 2019 so it's understandable this station looks ultra-futuristic. The spectacular Msheireb station serves as a transfer point between Red, Gold, and the Green lines of the Doha Metro and is the largest in the city. With sleek interiors, interesting light elements, and a bold color scheme that's normally blindingly white, it's truly spectacular.
Syntagma metro station, Athens, Greece
A transfer point between Athens Metro lines 1 and 2, Syntagma is not your average station. Considering the city's illustrious history, it maybe won't come as a surprise that the station is part museum.
Located beneath the Syntagma Square, there are many antiquities on display at the station that were found during the construction. Aside from the ancient artifacts, there are also works from many contemporary Greek artists.
Fulton Transit Centre, New York, USA
Westfriedhof, Munich, Germany
First opened in 1998, the platform in this station features 11 enormous ceiling light fixtures that continuously paint the platform in hues of blue, yellow, and red. It has now become a popular tourist attraction on the south side of the city.
Centralen station, Stockholm metro, Sweden
Stadion, Stockholm metro, Sweden
Foggy Bottom–GWU station, Washington DC, USA
Providing service for the Blue, Silver, and Orange Lines of the Washington Metro, Foggy Bottom has a charmingly old-fashioned feel to it, reminiscent of the 1970s sci-fi films. Opened in 1977, the station mostly serves the George Washington University (GWU) campus.
As it was one of the first stations to be built, it's one of the few in DC that features a 22-coffer waffle vault ceiling as stations constructed later abandoned this design for a simpler concrete arch.
Olaias, Lisbon, Portugal
Szent Gellért tér Station, Budapest, Hungary
Formosa Boulevard, Kaohsiung, Taiwan
The kaleidoscope-like glass ceiling at the Formosa Boulevard station is said to be the largest glass work in the world. Consisting of 4,500 glass panels, it’s made by Italian designer Narcissus Quagliata, who called it Wind, Fire and Time .
Khalid Bin Al Waleed Station, Dubai, UAE
Dubai is known for its eclectic and extravagant designs and it definitely doesn’t fall short when it comes to Dubai metro either. This station, also known as Burjuman, serves the Burjuman mall, one of the oldest shopping centers in Dubai.
Its most peculiar feature is the jellyfish-like chandeliers, giving the station an underwater vibe.
Komsomolskaya, Moscow metro, Russia
Mayakovskaya, Moscow metro, Russia
Elektrozavodskaya, Moscow metro, Russia
Plac Wilsona, Warsaw, Poland
U3-volkstheater, Vienna, Austria
Even though many of Vienna’s metro stations feature artworks by Austrian artists, it’s Nature in the Making by Anton Lehmden that’s best-known. Created from four million mosaic stones on an area almost twice as big as a tennis court, the artwork tells the story of the Big Bang and the formation of nature.
Staromestska, Prague, the Czech Republic
Arts et Métiers, Paris metro, France
An ode to steampunk and French novelist Jules Verne, the platform tunnel at Arts et Métiers is covered in copper cladding, complete with portholes and exposed bolts. Inspired by the science fiction novels of the early 20th century, it surely feels like the submarine Nautilus from one of Verne’s most famous works Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea .
Louvre Rivoli, Paris metro, France
Concorde, Paris metro, France
Westminster, London Underground, UK
Gants Hill, London Underground, England
Museum station, Toronto, Canada
Pyongyang, North Korea
Consisting of two lines, Pyongyang metro system is one of the deepest in the world. Opened in 1973, it’s a truly remarkable example of socialist realism as propaganda murals adorn the walls while golden statues of the country’s great leaders watch over the commuters.
Zoloti Vorota, Kiev, Ukraine
Comte de Flandre Station, Brussels, Belgium
When leaving the train at this station don’t forget to look up: tilt your head and you’ll find 16 mannequins suspended from the ceiling. Created by artist Paul van Hoeydonck, the installation titled 16 x Icarus looks eerily realistic.
Baikonur, Almaty, Kazakhstan
Named after Kazakhstan’s rocket launch facility, this station embodies 1970s sci-fi. Its white and blue tunnels and curved arches are reminiscent of early Star Trek films, but if that's not enough for your inner geek, a film of a rocket launch is shown while travelers wait for their train to arrive.
Toledo, Naples, Italy
Like something out of a science fiction film, the walls in Toledo station in Naples are covered in millions of tiny tiles in white and various shades of blue. It’s an artwork called Light Panels by Robert Wilson that illuminates these tiles and really gives the station its otherworldly feel.
Adams Plaza Bridge, London, England, UK
The brand-new Elizabeth line connects Reading and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east, stretching for more than 62 miles across London. This new addition to London's transport network, built by Crossrail, is expected to serve a whopping 200 million passengers a year.
Its stations are ultra-futuristic too: pictured is the Adams Plaza Bridge between One Canada Square and Crossrail Place, above the new Elizabeth line station at Canary Wharf.

Dubai Metro Green Line
The Green Line is one of the two lines on the Dubai Metro (the other is the Red Line ). It opened in September 2011.
The line runs from Etisalat Metro Station in Al Qusais to Creek Metro Station in Al Jaddaf. It passes north of Dubai International Airport and then through the densely populated areas of Deira and Bur Dubai .
There are 20 stations on the Green Line. There are two transfer stations where passengers can transfer to the Red Line ; Union and BurJuman (formerly Khalid Bin Al Waleed). 5 miles of the line (8 stations between Abu Baker Al Siddique and Oud Metha ) are underground.
The Green Line tends to be less crowded than the Red Line. It is much easier to find a seat during peak times.
Drivers can park their cars at the park-and-ride facility at Etisalat Metro Station . There are spaces for around 2,300 cars. Parking is free for Metro passengers. The other stations with large car parks are Centrepoint and Jabal Ali ; both on the Red Line.
Stations have facilities such as convenience stores, lifts, escalators, cycle parking, and taxi ranks.
Al Jadaf Marine Transport Station is situated near Creek Metro Station (the southern terminus of the Green Line). Abras leave from here and cross the Dubai Creek for Dubai Festival City.
To travel to Dubai International Airport, take a train to one of the transfer stations (Union or BurJuman), and then take a Red Line train towards Centrepoint.
The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority has plans to extend the Green Line to Dubai Creek Harbour and the International City area.
Bus Stations
While the Dubai Metro is a quick and convenient way to get around the city, some places can only be reached by bus. Bus stations can be found near some Green Line stations:
- Al Ghubaiba Bus Station is near Al Ghubaiba Metro Station . Al Ghubaiba Bus Station offers local bus services plus intercity services to the emirates of Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
- Union Bus Station is near Union Metro Station .
- Gold Souq Bus Station is next to Gold Souq Metro Station .
- Etisalat Bus Station is next to Etisalat Metro Station .
- Abu Hail Bus Station is near Abu Hail Metro Station .
- Sabkha Bus Station is near Baniyas Square Metro Station .
- Oud Metha Bus Station is near Oud Metha Metro Station .
Most Dubai Metro stations also offer feeder bus services (local services).
The Dubai Tram is a tram system running between Dubai Marina and Al Sufouh. The Green Line is not directly connected to the Dubai Tram .
To connect to the Dubai Tram, transfer to the Red Line and travel to SOBHA Realty or DMCC .
Timings for the Green Line are now the same as the Red Line:
- Monday – Thursday – 5:00 am to 12:00 am (midnight)
- Friday – 5:00 am to 1:00 am (following day)
- Saturday – 5:00 am to 12:00 am (midnight)
- Sunday – 8:00 am to 12:00 am (midnight)
Trains run every 5 or 6 minutes during peak hours and every 10 minutes at other times.
The journey time along the entire Green Line is around 40 minutes.
Dubai Metro timings were changed in 2022.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The United Arab Emirates attempted to dry out Wednesday from the heaviest rain the desert nation has ever recorded — a deluge that flooded out Dubai International Airport and disrupted flights through the world’s busiest airfield for international travel.
The state-run WAM news agency called the rain Tuesday “a historic weather event” that surpassed “anything documented since the start of data collection in 1949.” That’s before crude oil was discovered in this energy-rich nation then part of a British protectorate known as the Trucial States.
Rain also fell in Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, but was acute across the UAE.
The flooding sparked speculation that cloud seeding — flying small planes through clouds dispersing chemicals aimed at getting rain to fall — may have contributed to the deluge. But experts said the storm systems that produced the rain were forecast well in advance and that cloud seeding alone would not have caused such flooding.
Several reports quoted meteorologists at the National Center for Meteorology as saying they flew six or seven cloud-seeding flights before the rains. Flight-tracking data analyzed by The Associated Press showed one aircraft affiliated with the UAE’s cloud-seeding efforts flew around the country Monday.
The National, an English-language, state-linked newspaper in Abu Dhabi, quoted an anonymous official at the center on Wednesday as saying no cloud seeding took place on Tuesday, without acknowledging any earlier flights.
The center did not respond to questions Wednesday from the AP.
The UAE, which heavily relies on energy-hungry desalination plants to provide water, conducts cloud seeding in part to increase its dwindling, limited groundwater .

Jeff Masters, a meteorologist for Yale Climate Connections, said the flooding in Dubai was caused by an unusually strong low pressure system that drove many rounds of heavy thunderstorms.
“You don’t need cloud seeding’s influence to account for the record deluge in Dubai,” Masters said.
Another expert, Steven Siems of Australia’s Monash University, agreed.
Given the size of the storm, any seeding effort would simply be pointless,” he said. “Nature is already doing the job perfectly well.”
Scientists also say climate change in general is responsible for more intense and more frequent extreme storms, droughts, floods and wildfires around the world. Dubai hosted the United Nations’ COP28 climate talks just last year. Rising temperatures and other effects of global warming long have been viewed as a threat to life in the already-baking region.
The rains began late Monday, soaking the sands and roadways of Dubai with some 20 millimeters (0.79 inches) of rain, according to meteorological data collected at Dubai International Airport. The storms intensified around 9 a.m. Tuesday and continued throughout the day, dumping more rain and hail onto the overwhelmed city.
By the end of Tuesday, more than 142 millimeters (5.59 inches) of rainfall had soaked Dubai over 24 hours. An average year sees 94.7 millimeters (3.73 inches) of rain at Dubai International Airport.

Standing water lapped on taxiways as aircraft landed. Arrivals were halted Tuesday night, and passengers struggled to reach terminals through water-covered roads.
One couple, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity to speak freely in a country with strict laws that criminalize critical speech, called the situation at the airport “absolute carnage.”
“You cannot get a taxi. There’s people sleeping in the Metro station. There’s people sleeping in the airport,” the man said Wednesday.
Dubai International Airport acknowledged Wednesday morning that the flooding had left “limited transportation options” and affected flights as aircraft crews couldn’t reach the airfield.
“Recovery will take some time,” the airport said on the social platform X.
Long-haul carrier Emirates and FlyDubai, its low-cost sister airline, had major disruptions.
Paul Griffiths, the airport’s CEO, acknowledged continued issues with flooding Wednesday morning, saying every place an aircraft could be safely parked was taken. Some aircraft had been diverted to Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central, the city-state’s second airfield.
“It remains an incredibly challenging time. In living memory, I don’t think anyone has ever seen conditions like it,” Griffiths told the state-owned talk radio station Dubai Eye. “We are in uncharted territory.”
Egypt’s national carrier, EgyptAir, also temporarily suspended flights between Cairo and Dubai due to the bad weather.
Schools across the UAE, a federation of seven sheikhdoms, largely shut ahead of the storm and government employees were largely working remotely if able. Many workers stayed home as well, though some ventured out, with the unfortunate stalling out their vehicles in deeper-than-expected water covering spots on some roads. That included parts of the Sheikh Zayed Road, a 12-lane highway through downtown Dubai.
Authorities sent tanker trucks out into the streets and highways to pump away the water. Water poured into some homes, forcing people to bail out their houses.
The country’s hereditary rulers offered no overall damage or injury information for the nation, as some slept in their flooded vehicles Tuesday night. In Ras al-Khaimah, the country’s northernmost emirate, police said one 70-year-old man died when his vehicle was swept away by floodwater.
Khatm al-Shakla, an area near Al Ain in Abu Dhabi, saw 254 millimeters (10 inches) of rain Tuesday, the most anywhere in the country, officials said.
Authorities canceled school and the government instituted remote work again for Wednesday. Dubai later closed schools for the rest of the week.
Rain is unusual in the UAE, an arid, Arabian Peninsula nation, but occurs periodically during the cooler winter months. Many roads and other areas lack drainage given the lack of regular rainfall, causing flooding.
Meanwhile in neighboring Oman, a sultanate that rests on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, at least 19 people were killed in heavy rains in recent days, according to a statement Wednesday from the country’s National Committee for Emergency Management. That includes some 10 schoolchildren swept away in a vehicle with an adult, which saw condolences come into the country from rulers across the region.
Associated Press writer Samy Magdy in Cairo contributed to this report.
