Everything you need to know about health insurance for Erasmus students

With our health insurance for Erasmus students you are comprehensively covered during your semester abroad and can enjoy your stay without worries!

How do I become an Erasmus student?

The EU's Erasmus funding programme is open to students of all disciplines who are regular students at a participating higher education institution. Students from EU countries and some non-EU countries (Programme Countries ) can participate in all actions of the funding programme. From other partner countries only under certain conditions. The costs for the Erasmus funding program are paid from the EU budget (Euro). Meanwhile, almost 40% of all students travel abroad for one or more semesters or complete an internship there.

How can I apply as an erasmus student?

The Erasmus coordinators at the college or university provide application information as an Erasmus student for all students. Important questions are: Which country, which uni and how it is funded. What are the motivations for applying and what are the language skills. Whether it works out with the application also depends on the availability of places, which should be taken into account when choosing the three desired destinations - as an alternative, definitely consider a smaller host university.

Who pays for Erasmus?

Scholarship holders do not pay tuition fees but receive a monthly grant starting at 490 euros - depending on the country. Erasmus funding is tax-free. The costs for the Erasmus program are financed from the EU budget (euro).

What insurance do I need as an Erasmus student?

Students who spend a semester abroad as part of the Erasmus program must have health insurance abroad. This applies both to German students abroad (e.g. USA) and to foreign students studying in Germany.

We offer Erasmus students comprehensive health and travel cover for up to 5 years abroad with our health insurance for students abroad.

Why do I need health insurance as a student?

In European countries with which a social security agreement exists, you are covered by your statutory health insurance. For this purpose, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) of your health insurance company is required. However, this cover does NOT apply to countries that are not in Europe or do not belong to the EU.

In case of sudden illness abroad and if you are dependent on medical care or in case of an accident where you have to be treated in hospital, the health insurance from your home country often does not cover you. If you do not have the appropriate travel insurance, you may be faced with costs in four or five figures, which is not uncommon in the USA, for example.

Our tip: before starting your semester abroad, check exactly which services are covered and which are not. This way, you can ensure that you have sufficient health insurance abroad that is tailored to your individual needs and, in particular, to the duration of your stay abroad.

► Choose health insurance

What does the health insurance for students abroad cover?

What does the health insurance for students abroad cover?

Medical treatment + repatriation

The travel health insurance for students covers the most important costs for medical treatment, be it outpatient or inpatient. It also covers the cost of medication and repatriation if this is medically reasonable and justifiable. If students or language students have to be treated after an accident or due to an illness, the travel health insurance will usually cover these costs. Without travel health insurance, you will always have to bear the costs of this return transport - regardless of whether you are in a Schengen state or not, because your statutory health insurance does not generally cover medical transport from abroad.

Overview of the benefits of the international health insurance:

  • Cost absorption for medical treatment abroad (outpatient/inpatient)
  • Cost absorption for medication
  • Additional costs for repatriation of sick persons incl. baggage repatriation
  • repatriation of the insured in case of death

Important information about purchasing health insurance:

  • age up to max. 34 years
  • maximum duration 5 years
  • in case of premature departure or return, almost all tariffs are billed on a daily basis
  • The insurance must be concluded before the start of the journey!

Note: Only the contents and wording of the insurance policy and the insurance conditions are legally binding.

All-round insurance cover with our insurance package

We recommend taking out an additional property package consisting of emergency, liability, accident and luggage insurance as all-round insurance cover for your trip. This way, you can travel with a clear conscience and not have to worry about your health - or your wallet. Simply select the desired additional package when taking out health insurance.

Baggage insurance can alternatively also be taken out as individual insurance in addition to health insurance.

Health and Travel Insurance

All students are advised to take out comprehensive health and travel insurance. Students should note that participation in the study placement abroad does involve certain inherent risks which the exchange student must assume. The risks associated with study abroad include, but are not limited to, responsibility for damage to or loss of property, personal illness or injury and death while the exchange student is a participant in the programme. Although the University takes all necessary steps to mitigate these risks and to provide assistance in time of need, the student must take responsibility for ensuring personal safety and security during the study placement. The student must also assume responsibility for taking out adequate personal travel and health insurance, the options for which are detailed below.

Students are required to obtain a European Health Insurance Card. The application form may be submitted online on  http://www.ehic.ie/ . This card entitles the bearer to free accident and emergency treatment in EU countries. The card does NOT cover all medical expenses and is not a substitute for travel insurance.

In Germany, students are required to bring the European Health Insurance Card to the AOK (local health service). In France, the European Health Insurance Card entitles the bearer to a partial refund of medical costs. French Universities require that ERASMUS students take out civil liability insurance. In Finland, all university towns have health centres; a valid student card entitles you to free treatment with a small fee for consultations (for details:  www.yths.fi ). In Denmark, when you register with the ‘Folkeregister’ (civil registry office) you must fill in a form and choose a medical practitioner and a medical card (‘sygesikringsbevis’) will be sent out to you within two weeks (the European Health Insurance Card is also required).

Students are strongly advised to take out additional private medical insurance to cover the period of study abroad. If you have a medical insurance policy (VHI, Laya, Aviva, etc.) in Ireland, contact the insurer to ensure that you will be covered while abroad and bring a copy of your policy or policy number. In some countries you are obliged to take out additional student insurance and some universities (e.g. Pau) require that you join their scheme. Read the University requirements on insurance, in case the student must join the University scheme. Please be aware that in recent years, accidents involving injuries such as broken limbs have occurred to students who were under-insured while abroad. This incurs serious problems for the student, their family,  UL  and the host University. So please be attentive to this matter.

The following websites may be useful: Aviva:  www.avivahealth.ie Laya healthcare:  www.layahealthcare.ie VHI:  www.vhi.ie

As a registered student of the University of Limerick you will also be covered by the University of Limerick Student Life Personal Accident Policy which covers basic medical expenses resulting from accidental injury, certain permanent disabilities such as loss of a limb or loss of an eye, and accidental death. This policy extends to most sporting activities except hang-gliding. Full details of this insurance cover are available from the Students’ Union. Please note that this insurance does not cover medical insurance for illness.

In addition to private health insurance, students are strongly advised to take out travel insurance which includes repatriation to be transported home in the case of an illness. Please be aware that multi-trip insurance policies from most insurance providers do not cover an extended period abroad.

Students may take out travel insurance from any provider of their choice. Many institutions offer travel insurance, including insurance companies (Allianz, AXA, etc.), banks (Bank of Ireland, AIB, etc.), credit unions, etc.

Please find below examples of Erasmus insurance providers:

  • Email :  [email protected] .

ATTN: Insurance policy must be taken out prior to travelling abroad. Cover cannot be provided once students have left Ireland. Many insurance providers require that students have been residing in Ireland for at least 3 months prior to taking out insurance.

Studying abroad

Erasmus+ helps organise student and doctoral candidate exchanges.

These take place

  • within countries fully part of the Erasmus+ programme
  • to and from countries associated to Erasmus+

Quick explainer

Individuals from Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia or Türkiye can participate in most opportunities as these non-EU countries are associated to the Erasmus+ programme .

For individuals from other non-EU countries there are some opportunities, for example  Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees or the international dimension of student and staff exchange (if your university takes part) and youth exchange schemes .

You will need to check the  opportunity pages  for more information, as eligibility varies between opportunities.

There are 2 types of countries where Erasmus+ is active.

EU Member States and third countries associated to the Programme

These can fully take part in all the actions of the Erasmus+ Programme. They include all EU countries, members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), candidate EU countries and others. They were previously called Programme countries.

Third countries not associated to the Programme

These can take part in certain Erasmus+ actions . There are many of these, spanning the globe. They were previously called Partner countries.

See the full list of eligible countries

These descriptions determine the countries in which Erasmus+ activities may take place, and which type of activities are possible.

These can fully take part in all the actions of the Erasmus+ Programme. They include all EU countries, members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), candidate EU countries and others.

These can take part in certain Erasmus+ actions . There are many of these, spanning the globe.

By studying abroad with Erasmus+, you can improve your communication, language and inter-cultural skills and gain soft skills highly valued by future employers.

You can also combine your period spent studying abroad with a traineeship to gain work experience - ever important when starting out on the job market.

Opportunities to study abroad are available to students at short cycle Bachelor and Master levels and Doctoral candidates.

Access to Erasmus+ Online Language Support can help you learn the language used for your studies.

Students with physical, mental or health-related conditions  may apply for additional funding after they have been selected to study abroad.

Your long-term study period abroad can last a minimum of 2 months (or 1 academic term or trimester) and a maximum of 12 months. Students can also do a blended mobility, combining a virtual period with a physical short or long-term mobility. The short-term physical presence abroad as part of blended mobility lasts a minimum of 5 days and a maximum of 30 days.

You can benefit of an exchange abroad with Erasmus+ multiple times, either as a student or as a trainee, but your total time abroad (study abroad periods included) may not exceed 12 months within one cycle of study.

"Cycle" refers to the level of study as defined by the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) :

  • First cycle (Bachelor or equivalent) EQF – 5/6
  • Second cycle (Master or equivalent) EQF 7
  • Third cycle (Doctoral or equivalent) EQF 8

For "one-cycle" courses such as medicine or architecture, you can go abroad with Erasmus+ for as long as 24 months .

To study abroad with Erasmus+, you must be registered in a higher education institution and enrolled in studies leading to a recognised degree or tertiary-level qualification.

Your period of study abroad must be relevant for your degree-related learning and personal development needs, and be part of the study programme that you are following.

Your sending institution and the receiving institution must have an  inter-institutional agreement  between them for you to study there with Erasmus+.

Both institutions must also hold the  Erasmus Charter for Higher Education  (if they are in EU Member States or third countries associated to the Erasmus+ programme). Institutions from third countries not associated to the Erasmus+ programme commit to the principles of the Charter when signing the inter-institutional agreements.

Academic recognition

Before the study abroad period:

  • You, your sending and receiving higher education institutions must sign a Learning Agreement for Studies  to ensure a transparent and efficient preparation of the exchange abroad, as well as to agree on how activities successfully completed abroad will be recognised. This document sets out rights and responsibilities of the various parties
  • You will receive the Erasmus+ Student Charter , explaining your rights and obligations with respect to your period of study abroad

After the study abroad period:

The receiving higher education institution must provide you and your sending institution with a transcript of records confirming that the agreed programme has been completed and acknowledge the results

Your higher education institution must recognise the credits (using ECTS credits or an equivalent system) as agreed in the Learning Agreement before the mobility and count them towards your degree, without any further requirements

If your higher education institution is in a EU Member State or third country associated to the Erasmus+ programme, your mobility period should also be recorded in the Diploma Supplement

Follow the link to read more on the Guidelines on how to use the Learning Agreement for Studies .

Financial support

You may receive an Erasmus+ grant as a contribution to your travel and subsistence costs. This may vary according to differences in living costs between your country and the destination country, the number of students applying for a grant, the distance between countries and the availability of other grants.

If you are moving between EU Member State or third country associated to the Erasmus+ programme, check with your National Agency and your sending higher education institution for applicable rates. There is also extra support for students going on a traineeship, students with fewer opportunities or from outermost regions.

Grant levels and fixed rates for exchanges between EU Member States or third countries associated to the Erasmus+ programme and third countries not associated to the Erasmus+ programme are published in the  Erasmus+ Programme Guide .

Students in receipt of an Erasmus+ grant or an Erasmus+-zero-grant will sign a grant agreement specifying the duration of the mobility, the amount of the grant and other rights and obligations.

If you are mobile within EU Member States or third countries associated to the Erasmus+ programme, your sending institution will sign your grant agreement and it will be responsible for making all payments.

If you are moving between EU Member States or third countries associated to the Erasmus+ programme and third countries not associated to the Erasmus+ programme, the institution located in the EU Member State or third country associated to the Erasmus+ programme will sign the grant agreement. Your sending and receiving institutions will decide which one will make your payments.

As an Erasmus+ student, you are exempted from fees for tuition, registration, examinations, and charges for access to laboratories or libraries at the receiving institution. Small fees for insurance or student union membership may still apply.

You may be eligible for additional grants from your institution, government or other sources. Check the European Funding Guide  or the Study Portals .

How to apply

You can apply through the international or Erasmus+ office of your higher education institution.

You should be selected by your sending higher education institution in a fair and transparent way.

Arrangements for students with physical, mental or health-related conditions

Students with physical, mental or health-related conditions may apply for additional funding after they have been selected for a mobility period.

Your insurance requirements while on exchange

UCD students who are selected to participate in outbound mobility and international internships must have appropriate travel insurance in place. This is in line with the recommendation of the Department of Foreign Affairs and is a requirement of Erasmus Programme guidelines.

When purchasing your travel insurance policy, familiarise yourself with the coverage, terms and conditions and point of contact. It is also important to consider your insurance in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic as it differs from company to company. Make sure that your policy is valid for the entire period of your stay abroad.

All you need to know

Health insurance

Private health insurance is insurance that helps cover all or part of any medical and hospital costs incurred. Other benefits may also be provided as part of your policy.

See:  https://www.hia.ie/frequently-asked-questions

Travel insurance

Travel insurance can cover you against losses such as damaged or delayed luggage, cancelled flights, delayed or missed departure, loss or theft of money or passport, and emergency medical expenses associated with illness or injury. You may not be able to claim if you have not filled out your medical information truthfully.

See:  https://www.ccpc.ie/consumers/money/insurance/travel-insurance/

UCD requirements

In accordance with  UCD’s exchange programme terms and conditions  (please see point 13), and in compliance with the  recommendations of the Department of Foreign Affairs  and the Erasmus programme guidelines set out by the European Commission in Brussels, you will be required to take out a travel insurance policy to cover you while you are abroad.

To ensure that you are adequately covered while travelling, UCD requires all students participating in our exchange programme to have adequate travel insurance. This includes students studying within and outside Europe. When purchasing insurance please ensure that it covers the criteria outlined below. If you have already purchased insurance, please check your policy to ensure it covers the minimum criteria as listed.

Travel Insurance policies typically cover items such as emergency medical expenses, medical repatriation costs, costs associated with delay or curtailment of travel, and loss or theft of personal items. The level of cover provided differs from policy to policy, with increased levels of cover typically costing more. Students should note that travel insurance policies generally do not provide any cover for medical costs associated with the treatment of pre-existing illnesses. If you suffer from an illness that may require medical attention when abroad you may need to disclose this to your insurer - check the terms and conditions of your policy.

If travelling within the EU/EEA

If you are a resident in Ireland and are going on exchange within Europe, you must apply for an European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Further information on the application is available on the  HSE website .

The EHIC provides you with basic healthcare in another EU or European Economic Area (EEA) state for free, or at a reduced cost but you must carry the card with you. The EHIC entitles you only to the state-funded healthcare scheme in the country which you are visiting, and few countries will pay the full cost of healthcare for people who have a card, so you may have to pay for some of the services yourself.

Purchasing adequate travel insurance will ensure that any of the costs involved in transporting you back to Ireland will be covered as these are not included in the basic EHIC cover.

  • AIG Travel Insurance
  • AIB Backpacker Standard policy  (get a quote  here )
  • Aviva backpacker policy  (covers max of 6 months)
  • Allianz backpacker policy
  • If you are arranging through a different policy, please ensure that you are covered for the minimum conditions as listed above
  • The full duration of your exchange should be insured
  • If you have a pre-existing condition, you should declare this when arranging cover, as otherwise your insurance may be void if you need to claim for that condition
  • Check the  DFA website  regularly for updates on restrictions on travel to your destination; follow their  Twitter  account
  • Familiarise yourself with your policy document and the claims procedure, including any excess payments which you may need to pay upfront.

Insurance FAQs

If you are covered by your own or your parents’ private health insurance plan, you may have travel insurance provided as part of that cover. You should confirm the actual level and extent of any cover you will have while abroad with the service provider. Ensure that the insurance covers the minimum criteria outlined above and that you are insured for the complete duration of your stay. You can establish all of this quite easily by contacting the health insurance company directly. You may be able to purchase additional cover for travel insurance if this is not included in the existing policy.

If you are covered by a health insurance or similar plan provided by the university you are going to, you should confirm the actual level of cover you will have while abroad. Ensure that insurance covers the minimum criteria outlined above. Ensure that you are covered for the duration of your stay abroad. You can establish all of this quite easily by contacting the insurance company directly. You may be able to purchase additional cover for travel insurance if this is not included in the existing policy.

The Department of Foreign Affairs recommends that all students going abroad should be covered by comprehensive travel insurance policies. Under the new Erasmus programme and UCD’s Terms & Conditions of Exchange, all students going on exchange are required to take full responsibility to ensure they are adequately insured for the purpose and duration of their stay abroad.

Your travel insurance covers only those medical costs that will get you fit and well enough to travel home, it does not cover any long-term treatments that might be required when you get back. If you have an injury while abroad and need medical treatment in-country that will be covered, but if follow-up treatment is required on return to Ireland, you would need to be covered under your own health insurance. This is one benefit of having both.

You cannot rely on the healthcare cover provided by the EHIC as this may be quite limited. The EHIC does not cover repatriation, illness, an accident abroad, cancelled/delayed flights and the loss/theft of luggage, personal belongings or money which can incur extra travel and accommodation costs.

As you are participating in a UCD Exchange Programme, UCD needs confirmation that you have appropriate travel insurance cover in place should an emergency arise while you are abroad. You will be responsible for liaising with your insurance provider in relation to confirming cover and submitting claims. UCD holds your policy details for reference purposes only.

UCD will request you to complete a form before you depart on exchange with your policy information. We will email you information about this form.

No, International SOS provides 24/7 support if you need help in any situation.  They can advise and guide you but they cannot pay for any medical or other expenses - this must be done through your insurance provider.

Outgoing Erasmus+ and Exchange Students

Welcome, you have taken the first step in setting off for a semester or full year abroad.

Study Abroad

For full-time registered students, Erasmus is a once-off opportunity for you to study at another European institution for a semester or a full academic year. The benefits (academic, social, personal and cultural) of participating in the Erasmus programme are huge.

Students and Trainees (interns) opting for a study visit or work placement spend a semester or full academic year at a partner institution or enterprise within the EU, as an integral component of your qualification at TU Dublin. The time spent in the host institution is  fully recognized by TU Dublin  through the use of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

TU Dublin currently has around 250 academic partners (Universities and other HEIs) in 21 countries across the European Union and EEA countries. During the 2019/2020 academic year, upwards of 250 TU Dublin students and trainees will spend at least one semester studying at one of our partner institutions, or working in enterprises.

Work or Train Abroad

Students whose programmes of study include a work placement may have the opportunity to complete this placement in another EU member state. TU Dublin works closely with industry partners throughout Europe who offer excellent work placement opportunities to students from a variety of disciplines. Students participating in the Erasmus+ programme not only gain invaluable academic and/or work training experience, but also have the opportunity to experience life in another country, develop language and intercultural skills, travel and broaden their horizons.

To start, speak with the Academic Coordinator attached to your school to see what opportunities and countries are available to you.

Nominations

Once a suitable 'host institution' or 'host enterprise' has been agreed upon, your Academic Coordinator will nominate you to the Erasmus and Exchange Office by completing our  Outgoing Student Nomination Form .

Applications

Once your nomination has been accepted, you will then complete an online application form yourself.  This is the internal TU Dublin application form. You will receive an email from the TU Dublin Erasmus and Exchange Section to explain how to apply online and what documents are needed. This email with online application link is sent to the e-mail address your academic co-ordinator provides at the time of your nomination.

Once your application is received by the Erasmus and Exchange Office your nomination will be sent to your desired destination or 'host institution'.

The host institution will then advise you of their application procedures needed (this is the external application to the place of study/work abroad), and will notify you of their decision.

All outgoing students are required to attend a Pre-Departure Meeting, organised by TU Dublin International Office. At this meeting you will get information about Erasmus documentation, the Erasmus App, receive the Erasmus Student Charter, and learn about your role in applying for your Erasmus funding.

See  Erasmus ISCED Codes

Remember to pay close attention to all application deadlines. The host university/organisation where you plan to study or work/train may have an earlier application deadline seperate to our internal deadline here in TU Dublin. Please be sure to check this.

Applicants must ensure that a pdf copy of their online application ( duly signed by both the student and their Academic Co-ordinator )  is submitted to our Erasmus and Exchange Office on or before the below stated deadline:

Application for the Erasmus study/work programme is different to application for your Erasmus funding.

To qualify for Erasmus funding, a study period abroad must be a minimum of 3 months, and a traineeship period abroad must be a minimum of 2 months. In both cases the maximum duration for funding is 12 months. These durations are set by the European Commission.

Under Erasmus regulations Erasmus students are not charged tuition fees in the European institution that they attend, however there may be other charges to pay to the university, and of course there are costs involved in living abroad. You will need to budget for flights, accommodation, food and other expenses.

Only TU Dublin students who have made a successful application within the deadline(s) can receive an  Erasmus Grant .  You will receive an Erasmus pack outlining the required documents for payment of grant.  The Erasmus funding is intended to offset the costs of studying in another EU state; it is not intended to cover all of your costs

Some students who are deemed to be financially disadvantaged may be eligible for  Social Inclusion Supplementary Support Initiative (SISSI) Funding.

SISSI Rate for Study Mobility - €250 per month extra top-up for those receiving SUSI

SISSI Rate for Traineeship Mobility - €250 per month extra top-up for those receiving SUSI

Your grant is usually paid in two instalments - after arrival in your host institution and after departure from your host institution.

The amount a student will receive depends on the country of destination and the duration of the mobility. At the start of the mobility we can only estimate how long you will be abroad on your Erasmus+, and we use this estimation of months to calculate your first payment. The first payment will be 80% of your estimated duration multiplied by the appropriate grant level for your host country as indicated above. Your estimated duration will be entered into your Grant Agreement.

At the end of your mobility, we will take the start date from your confirmation of arrival document, and the end date of your confirmation of departure document and use these to calculate your actual duration.

Please note:

  • If this duration is more than the original estimated duration your second allocation grant will be increased to reflect this change.
  • If it is less than the original estimated duration your second allocation grant will be decreased to reflect this also.

Student Universal Support Initiative (SUSI)

SUSI is the national body responsible for grant support to students in full time third level education. Access the  SUSI  website directly, for information on making a student grant application. Erasmus funding is not linked to SUSI grants. While on Erasmus abroad, you continue to receive your SUSI grant. Some Erasmus participants who already receive SUSI may be able to avail of extra Erasmus funding. These terms and conditions are clearly explained at your compulsory pre-departure meeting with the TU Dublin Erasmus team.

Students who find themselves in acute financial hardship can apply to the TU Dublin Student Assistance Fund. Contact the Student Services for more information.

Students are requested to contact our Fees Office to complete the necessary forms in order to receive their SUSI grant while on Erasmus abroad.

MAPFRE and ESN partner to offer Erasmus students Insurance Coverage

erasmus student travel insurance

More than 250,000 Erasmus students could benefit from the protection offered under the policy, which covers medical repatriation, hospital accompaniment and medical expenses in the event of illness or accident

MAPFRE and the Erasmus Student Network  ( ESN ) have signed a travel insurance distribution agreement aimed at European Erasmus students, through its subsidiary MAPFRE ASSISTANCE. This solution comes on the back of rising demand from students for such coverage, and up to 250,000 students can now avail of this insurance, giving them peace of mind so that they can get the most out of their Erasmus experience .

The product can be purchased in 18 European countries ( Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Germany, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Romania and Sweden ) as of July 2015 and will gradually be extended to other countries over the course of 2015.

MAPFRE ASSISTANCE will use its online travel insurance platform InsureandGo to offer students which includes medical assistance, repatriation in case of accident, a relative’s travel and accommodation costs if the insured is hospitalized, baggage recovery and a host of other features that make it the ideal solution for today’s Erasmus globetrotters .

The new insurance on offer provides students with multilingual telephone assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year , as well as guidance and medical advice for any type of query. Students who take out this insurance will also be covered for the theft of personal items such as cell phones and laptops.

Travel Insurance is a type of insurance that covers a pre-planned trip and will reimburse the policyholder if certain unforeseen circumstances occur.  Students participating in outbound mobility and international placements must have appropriate travel insurance in place.

University of Galway Insurance Cover Requirements & Recommendations:

  • Medical Expenses to include Repatriation – at least €1 Million
  • Personal Liability – at least €500,000
  • Cancellation/Curtailment/Rearrangement – Highly recommended
  • Baggage /Personal Items/ Money/ Passport – Highly recommended

Other important considerations when purchasing insurance:

  • Duration of the Policy cover – you need to ensure that your Travel Insurance covers the entire duration of your time abroad
  • Material Facts – please ensure you disclose all relevant material facts to your Insurers. For example, a pre-existing medical condition.
  • COVID 19 Cover – please ensure you check and review the policy carefully in relation to COVID 19 costs and expenses. Policies differ from one Insurer to another in relation to the coverage offered.
  • Excluded Territories – all policies will include an Excluded Territory List. Please ensure you are familiar with same and discuss any issues/concerns with your Insurer.
  • Exclusions – please read the Policy before purchasing to understand the specific exclusions.
  • Holidays/returning home – if you intend to take a holiday during your trip abroad or return home please check that this is covered by your policy before travelling.
  • Winter Sports – if you intend to participate in any winter sports during your time abroad please ensure this is covered by your Policy.
  • It’s important to check the policy Terms and Conditions at the time of purchase as these can change frequently

Students are reminded that it is your responsibility to ensure that you obtain a policy which satisfies the University requirements and your own needs in advance of departure and to ensure you have adequate cover in place for the duration of your time abroad.

Further information on travel insurance in Ireland is available through the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.  Travel insurance - CCPC

Please note that some partner universities (for example some in the US) require you to buy a particular policy that they source. In these instances it can be more expensive than you might be able to find at home. Some host universities will also require you to provide them with details of your private travel insurance policy.

Make sure that you keep a record of any emergency numbers provided by the insurance company incase you have to make a claim. Having the details readily to hand will alleviate some of the stress if you are in a difficult situation. Should you find yourself in circumstances where you will have to make a claim, you should contact the insurance company immediately, as a delay in doing this could affect your claim.

Cover Under a Family Health Insurance Plan You may wish to investigate whether travel for your stay abroad under your own or your parents’ private  health insurance  plan is adequate. You will need to confirm the cover requirements as given above are met completely. You can establish this by reading the policy document and by contacting the health insurance company directly. You may be able to purchase additional cover for travel insurance if this is not included in an existing health insurance policy.

Please be aware that  University of Galway students going on Erasmus study visits or traineeships will be required to provide the name of their insurer and the policy name and number when completing their Erasmus grant agreement .  Without this information, the grant agreement will be considered invalid and the student will not be eligible for the Erasmus grant.

IMPORTANT NOTE for EU Citizens Travelling to EU Countries

A  European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)  is essential for every EU citizen travelling to another European country; as a student, it entitles you to necessary healthcare in the public system of any EU/EEA member state. The EHIC provides for basic health cover, but what constitutes basic cover may vary from one country to another, and in some cases the patient will be required to make a contribution to the costs of care in the public health system, so it’s advisable to check the website www.ehic.ie to get precise information on the different countries. You can also apply for the card via that website. One card is needed for each individual or member of a family.  The EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance, however, and it’s quite limited in what it covers.  Healthcare in a private setting is not included, nor is the cost of repatriation, or the additional travel and accommodation costs that can accrue in a case of illness or an accident abroad. You will also need to be covered for eventualities like cancelled/delayed flights and lost luggage. This is where private travel insurance comes in.

Erasmus students abroad

Erasmus and insurance.

Is your child going abroad for a few months? He may be confronted with minor incidents for which it is better to be insured. Check before he leaves whether he is properly covered, so there are no worries once he isthere.

Firstly, obtain information from your child's university or school. It is highly likely that they have taken out group accident insurance for their students. Check the exact content of this cover with the university or college in Belgium.

Then, check whether the policies taken out at parental level cover the risk! Get assistance through your broker or agent and, if in doubt, ask the insurer directly for confirmation.

If necessary, there are insurance policies on the market that were specially developed to cover this type of situation. Get informed! Check out the offering on the market yourself, or ask your broker for help.

  • Liability for the student's room and its contents is normally covered by the fire insurance of the parent's home. Nonetheless, check the general terms and conditions of the fire insurance contract, in particular whether the place of stay is covered as well as the contents and for what risk (fire? theft? etc.). Check in particular about cover for valuables.
  • The compulsory civil liability car insurance is valid in all European countries and even in a number of non-European countries. The " green card " contains the exact list of these countries. Check to see whether your child is well covered when driving around. Otherwise, it is possible to apply for an extension of cover or to take out insurance at the border.
  • It can happen to anyone that they cause damage to third parties. The parents' civil liability family insurance covers the student as an insured person. The insurance is likely to help your child defend him or herself and compensate injured third parties. This type of insurance is valid in Europe and often worldwide. Please note! The cover provided by family insurance is limited in terms of the amounts. Moreover, it only covers extra-contractual civil liability. Therefore, check whether your legal protection policy - also called Defence and Legal Action - is likely to provide cover.
  • Hospitalisation insurance is also frequently valid throughout the European Union. In principle, when the RIZIV/INAMI - i.e. your mutual insurance company - covers treatment abroad, the hospitalisation insurance provides cover. Don't forget to ask for your European Health Insurance Card if you are staying in Europe. It is also possible to take out health care cover - for example, in addition to assistance insurance.
  • Travel assistance insurance can be useful in particular in the event of repatriation following an illness or accident abroad. There are insurers on the market who developed specific products for students.
