There are 4 fierce dragons at the entry points to the bridge as well as 16 smaller dragons along the span of the bridge. Dragons have long been a symbol of Ljubljana and take pride of place on the city’s coat of arms as well as the flag. According to the story, he stopped by a large lake near the Ljubljanica River where he encountered, fought and slayed a dragon. Nowadays dragons are seen as the protector of the city.

Dragon Bridge was built in 1901 to replace an oak bridge that was damaged in the 1895 earthquake. It is a prime example of Vienna Secession architecture (closely related to Art Nouveau). This triple-hinged arch bridge built with reinforced concrete. Reinforced concrete was chosen as the building material as it was cheaper than stone. Dragon Bridge was one of the first reinforced concrete bridges in Europe and the first asphalt-paved bridge in Slovenia. The bridge is primarily used for motorised traffic but can also be crossed on foot. It spans over the Ljubljanica River with a length of 33.34 metres (109 feet 5 inches).

Free Things to Do in Ljubljana, Slovenia (and almost free)

Free Things to Do in Ljubljana, Slovenia in Winter free walking tours

What To Do in Ljubljana In Winter

Winter is Ljubljana is a special time. There are so many ways to make the city cozy and festive. And the huge bonus is that there are so many free things to do in Ljubljana.

But don’t despair, this Ljubljana what to do list (for free!) works in summer, too.

People watching along the Ljubljanica River

The first thing you want to do when you get into Ljubljana is walk down to the river and check the place out. Anywhere in the old town is a good place for people watching, especially on the weekends. If you are willing to spend a few Euros, grab a seat at one of the river side cafés for a cup of coffee or tea. There are heaters under the tables and blankets on the back of most seats to keep you cozy while people watching during the Ljubljana winter.

Ljubljana Castle – Ljubljanski Grad

Swing at the Ljubljana Castle – Ljubljanski Grad

The Ljubljana Castle towers over the city and can be seen from most places in the old town. Climb the castle hill and wander the trails. You’ll find a physical fitness course, a vineyard, and great views. Check out the castle courtyard and walk the ramparts for free. If you want to visit the museum or other parts of the castle, you will need a ticket. Don’t miss the swing out front. This is one of our favorite things to do in winter. Play, play, play!

Ljubljana Free Tours offers free walking tours of the city daily

Ljubljana Free Tours offers free walking tours of the city daily, even in winter. Anders and I took a free walking tour of Ljubljana and loved it. We learned so much and looked at the city a little differently after that. While it is free, it’s good manners to tip the guide. They don’t get paid for their services and that’s how they can offer a free walking tour Ljubljana. I love that they do these even in winter in Ljubljana.

If group tours aren’t your thing, you can download a range of self guided walking tours of Ljubljana from GPSMYCITY . I didn’t try any of these (I like to ask questions!), so let me know if you use them and what you think.

There are more Ljubljana alternative tours here .

Tivoli Park

One of three parks within the city of Ljubljana, Tivoli Park is the largest at five square kilometers. The park area blends into the slopes of the Rožnik hill, which is full of trails.

We entered the park through Jakopič Promenade, a free, open air photography exhibit. Anders and I spent several hours wandering around. I used Google Maps on my phone to keep track of where we were, but mostly we just chose whichever path looked most interesting. We got to the highest point, played on a huge, rustic, physical fitness course, and stumbled on a giant ski jump.

Ljubljana Central Market

The Ljubljana Central Market is a great place to get fruit, veggies, nuts, and meats, but it’s also important culturally. The building was designed by beloved Slovenian architect, Jože Plečnik and stretches between the Triple Bridge and the Dragon Bridge. Adjacent Vodnik Square hosts vendors Mon-Sat, but the most popular day (and some say the most fun) is Saturday. Slovenes congregate for shopping, socializing, and taking advantage of all the yummy prepared foods. Don’t miss the flower market at the junction of Pogačar Square and Vodnik Square.

Saint Nicholas Church — Ljubljana Cathedral

St. Nicholas Church is on the edge of the Central Market. If you take the Free Tour Ljubljana you will learn about the unusual doors and go inside. If the tour isn’t on your list, you can read up about it here . Unless there is sign outside indicating it is prayer time, you are free to go inside. It is quite beautiful.

Ljubljana cathedral opening hours: Closed from 12:00 – 15:00 and services are held daily.

Look for Dragons

Ljubljana is known for its dragons. From the four that guard the Dragon Bridge, to the top of manhole covers, to scary dragons on the side of buildings and cute cartoon dragons on souvenirs, to dragons wrapped around the label of the local beer, you’ll find dragons everywhere.

From the  City of Ljubljana website :

“The Ljubljana dragon is part of the City of Ljubljana coat of arms. It symbolises strength, courage and might. It is depicted on the Dragon Bridge and on top of the castle tower on Ljubljana’s coat of arms.”

The story goes that Jason (remember him from Greek mythology?) passed through Ljubljana on his way home with the Golden Fleece, and that he and his Argonauts killed a dragon. That’s why dragons are considered protectors of the city. I don’t totally get this. Since they slayed the dragon, how is it a protector?

This bridge is also nicknamed the “mother-in-law’s bridge.” They say the dragons will fly away once a virgin crosses the bridge ( hilararious ).

Pee for Free

If you have traveled around Europe at all, you will know this is a big deal. It generally costs money to use the public bathrooms. It’s not expensive, but when there are four of you, and two of you are kids who need to go when they need to go…it adds up. But in Slovenia you pee for free. The public restrooms around the city center are not only free, but clean and warm. Public toilets at the Ljubljana Railway Station and within the city centre are free. You can find public toilets below most of Ljubljana’s bridges and in a number of other locations. Most of the toilets have disabled access. Details on locations and open hours here .

Visit Museums

You have to time it right, but the national museums are free on the first Sunday of the month . They are also free on certain holidays.

We toured the Moderna galerija Ljubljana / Museum of Modern Art Ljubljana, the Slovenian Museum of Natural History , and the Ljubljana City Museum on February 8th – the anniversary of the death of the great Slovenian poet France Prešeren. A lot of people take advantage of the free days, so be ready for crowds. The City Museum Ljubljana was really cool.

Other free days include: International Museum Day (18 May) , Museum Summer Night (the second or third Saturday in June), This Merry Day of Culture (3 December , the birthday Slovenian poet France Prešeren). Museums stay open until midnight or even later and quite a few educational events take place. Check out these free museums Ljubljana.

Another Kind of Art: Metelkova – Metelkova Mesto

I wrote about this in my Fun for Kids in Ljubljana post , so I will go ahead and quote myself.

Near the train station, abandoned army barracks has become a gathering spot for artists, underground musicians, and Slovenia’s subcultures.  Metelkova Mesto  is a 12,500 square meter autonomous region just blocks from the capital’s charming, historic, old town.

Most nights, hundreds of people gather within the graffiti-strewn walls, amidst tile mosaics and creepy sculptures, to attend one of 1,500 alternative events in its illegally (but condoned) occupied buildings.

During the day it’s pretty much empty. You can stroll past the artwork, climb a big jungle gym/tree house, and appreciate the other side of Slovenian sensibilities. It seems a little drab and creepy for visiting Ljubljana in winter, but I think that’s part of the point. There are art shows, concerts, etc that happen here if you are looking for things to do in Ljubljana at night, but we were told it wasn’t very kid friendly.

You can also sign up for a f ree 2-hour guided graffiti art walk , which ends at the Autonomous Cultural Zone Metelkova City.

Day Hikes Near Ljubljana

Unfortunately, we did not do much hiking near Ljubljana. As I mentioned above, Tivoli Park and Castle Hill are nice for in-town trails. Two others I would have liked to visit are Šmarna Gora and St. Katarina.

Šmarna Gora is the highest hill in Ljubljana at over 600 meters. You can get there via car or bus (take line 8 toward Gameljne to the Tacen station).

St. Katarina is purported to have amazing views of snowy mountains. Drive or take bus 51 from Bavarski Dvor to Žirovnik station. I wish we had fit this into our time in Ljubljana.

Read Hiking in Ljubljana: The 5 Best Short Hikes for more details.

Need to Instagram your moment in Ljubljana RIGHT NOW, but don’t have your new sim card, yet? To prevent you from being cut off from the virtual world while wandering around Ljubljana, the city offers you access to its  free Wi-Fi network . Or you can look up what to see in Ljubljana!

Firstly, I love that Ljubljana does the free city tour thing. I’ve been seeing this come up in more and more cities. Passionate people who want to share their home and then earn what visitors feel their time/skill was worth. I love it. And I would love to do a dragon scavenger hunt with the kids!! Such a beautiful and interesting place to explore!

' src=

We’ve been taking advantage of these free city tours all over. I wasn’t sure if this was a newer thing, or just something we figured out. In some places, like Munich, there are competing free tours!

' src=

The free tours sound awesome! I’m sure more people take advantage because of that. I grew up in Poland but have never been to Slovenia. Looks like a fun destination!

Slovenia is amazing! I’d like to get to Poland, too. I’ve heard such good things about it.

' src=

I love city tours, When we go to France in April we are scheduled for several city wallking tours along the route. Looking forward to it. After seeing all your pictures I hope in the next few years to be able to go to some of the spots you have visited.

You will love it. I am very excited for your trip!

' src=

So good as usual! Thanks so much for all the sharing!

As usual, thanks for reading!! 🙂

' src=

Amazing that you got to spend a month in Ljubljana. Slovenia is definitely on my list of must see places. I also like to take advantage of free city tours and museum entrances (on certain days) whenever I visit a new city. I will have to keep in mind that these are free in Ljubljana when I finally get to visit.

It’s so nice to find some free things when you are traveling as it can be so expensive otherwise.

' src=

Slovenia looks beautiful! It’s always been a place that I’ve wanted to visit and during winter looks so pretty with the snow. City tours are also one of my favorite things to do!

It is really gorgeous in winter. We are starting to seek out city tours wherever we go.

' src=

That looks like a very interesting city. I have to say though that I read “pee for free” and saw the photo above it, I thought you’ll have to pee by the river. Lol.

I love people watching and it’s most certainly my favorite thing to do when I’m in a foreign city. Good to know that they have heaters under the table and blankets too, I can never find an outdoor heater here in London.

Also, how much is a reasonable amount for a tip to the guide who gave a free tour?

Many of the bathrooms are under the bridges, but they are actual restrooms, not just the river ;).

' src=

This is such a great resource for when I get to Ljubljana! I really wanna look for dragons! and I love that you included peeing for free in your post. Paying to use the restroom is always a point of shock for first-time visitors to Europe. Good to know the bathrooms are kept up as well!

There are dragons everywhere once you start looking around. It’s pretty fun!

' src=

All the winter shots look so majestic. I love the Dragon Bridge story, which I agree does sound a little off since they did slay the Dragon. And peeing for free is a plus in an European city! Thanks for that tip. It would be nice to go on a free tour of the city and get thee local perspective.

It’s amazing how happy a free bathroom makes me!

' src=

This makes me wish I had visited Slovenia when I was traveling in Eastern Europe! I want to see the Ljubljana Castle and Metelkova Mesto especially. Thanks for the guide, I’m bookmarking for when I make it over there!

Hope you do make it there. It’s well worth the effort!

' src=

I have visited Slovenia but never made it to Ljubljana. It does look like such a beautiful city, though I am not sure I would want to visit in winter, though it does like nice with the snow!! I love free walking tours and I would certainly do that if I visit.

I think most people visit in summer. I am sure it is lovely, if more crowded.

' src=

I loved Slovenia when I went, but didn’t get much time in Ljubljana to explore. I would be really into the city tours! They take you to so many incredible places and give you inside info on the city as true locals. The castle is stunning. I love European Castles they are just so magical.

The city tours are so great because they really help you see the city differently and appreciate it more.

' src=

I’ve heard such good things about Ljubljana, and your pictures make it look so magical in Winter! I love taking free city tours in every place I visit, so this recommendation is super helpful, but I think my favourite thing has t be the castle – how magestic!

It’s such a charming city. We loved it and can’t wait to go back.

' src=

I think that many people don’t realise that you can do fun stuff whilst on a trip for free. I love visiting castles and loved the image that you took. I also love dragon’s and Greek Mythology and I had never heard of that part of the story in Jason so thank you for teaching me something new. The Metekovla art looks crazy.

Isn’t it great that there are so many freebies out there? You just have to walk around and find them!

' src=

I’m actually going to Ljubljana next week for 2 days to finish up my 2 week trip through Croatia. I imagine by then my funds will be rather depleted so this list is so useful! Free/almost free things are always the best. Thanks so much for sharing – very excited to pee for free!

You are going to love it! Ljubljana is such a charming, lovely town.

' src=

Great post on somewhere I’ve wanted to visit for a long time. Love the street art and it’s good to know you don’t have to put your hand in your pocket every five minutes!

Isn’t it nice that there are so many free ways to enjoy the city?

' src=

Even Eastern Europe can too expensive for an Indian back packer, and hence, I love this post! The walking tour seems like a lot of fun…it gives you a perspective into things and then you can go and explore on your own. I love the winter feel in your pics…the ice and snow…I suddenly feel the urge to make a snowman

We like to search out the free things wherever we go. It means we can travel more and stay longer! Even though Slovenia was less expensive than most of Europe, it was pricier than we expected.

' src=

Castles, swings hikes and museums are a few of my favorite things so your list hits spot-on for me! I’ve never traveled to Slovenia but I’ll definitely be pinning this list of free things to do for when I go!

Put Slovenia on your list! There is so much to see and do.

#1 Ljubljana Castle

Ljubljana Castle courtyard in Ljubljana, Slovenia

The Castle is a Ljubljana must-see. Just like in a fairytale, the Ljubljana Castle sits prominently atop a hill complete with a lookout tower and giant, billowing flag. Visible from practically every point in town, it beckons a visit.

Ljubljana Castle History

The Roman castle dates to the 12th century, but has undergone major overhaul – twice – in the last century, giving it a modern look. However, many of the original details remain, like an old prison cell beneath the courtyard and stonework near the chapel.

Getting to the Ljubljana Castle

There are two ways of ascending the hill to the castle in Ljubljana: Funicular or Hike. The modern glass funicular zips visitors to the top of the hill for a small fee.

However, we have always opted to make the steep climb up. Following signs throughout town, visitors are lead down an alley to the trail head. The path splits into two routes: A series of steep switchbacks or a longer, gradual incline around the hill. Either way, there are fantastic views of Ljubljana along the way.

What To See at Ljubljana Castle

Whether you take the funicular or walk the path up the hill, the Ljubljana Castle should be #1 on your Ljubljana sightseeing list. Although the Medieval castle has seen many changes since it was first built, it still bears the marks of the city’s history.

Much of the Ljubljana Castle is free to visit – a castle ticket is only needed to climb the tower and enter the museum exhibits. Entering the courtyard (where there are restaurants and a café), visiting a few key castle sights and wandering the grounds is free of charge.

Ljubljana Top Attractions Inside the Castle

At the base of the castle tower is the old chapel, which is decorated in a colorful Baroque style and full of light. Inside, there’s a demonstration of different writing styles through the centuries.

During World War I, the castle was used as a jail for POWs and political prisoners. Visitors can step inside the prison cells to read details of the detainees and experience the cramped confinement.

Ljubljana Castle Price and Ljubljana Castle Opening Times can be found on the official website . Or, buy your ticket in advance on Viator .

#2 Preseren Square, Ljubljana

View over Preseren Square, Ljubljana

Named for Slovenian poet France Prešeren and marked by his statue, the bright square off the Triple Bridge is the heart of the city.

Prešeren Square sits at the center of six streets. It is the main square in Ljubljana and is nearly always bustling with people. Top features of Preseren Trg Square are the many beautiful and historic buildings as well as the dominating Franciscan Church (which is next on our list).

The ornate square is one of the top sights in Ljubljana.

Top Tip : Many Ljubljana tours meet in Preseren Square…more on that at the end of the post.

#3 Franciscan Church (Pink Church, Ljubljana)

What to see in Ljubljana: Experience the city!

The hard-to-miss pink Franciscan Church of the Annunciation sits on Preseren Square. It was built between 1646 and 1660 – and is one of the top Ljubljana attractions. In 2008, the church was listed as a Cultural Monument of National Significance in Slovenia.

The stunning Baroque façade and the bright exterior makes it the most photographed Ljubljana church.

Step inside the church (it’s free to enter) to see the rich décor. The dark interior is in sharp contrast to cheerful exterior – and it’s a must see in Ljubljana. Note the elaborate altar and the ceiling frescoes (many of which had to be repainted after an earthquake in the late 1800s).

#4 Triple Bridge Ljubljana

What to see in Ljubljana: Triple Bridge

Straddling the Ljubljanica River is the Triple Bridge – another famous landmark in Ljubljana. The three-part bridge was designed by Ljubljana’s famed architect, Jože Plečnik – who is responsible for much of the city’s current style.

Walking across the Triple Bridge is one of the top things to do in Ljubljana.

The Triple Bridge connects the oldest part of the town to the modern area of Ljubljana. The bridge was built on the site of an older bridge that tended to bottleneck with too many crossings. In 1929, Joze Plecnik designed the three bridges to alleviate the congestion – but he did it with a Venetian flair.

The 642 balusters (although made of simple concrete) are the most eye-catching feature of the Triple Bridge.

#5 Dragon Bridge Ljubljana

Dragon on Dragon Bridge in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Built in 1901, the Dragon Bridge is a classic example of the Vienna Secession style (closely related to the Art Nouveau style) used in Ljubljana when it was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Although the bridge is not particularly extravagant, it was an engineering feat in its time.

What makes the bridge a Ljubljana must see is the four green beasts crouched on the pillars of the Dragon Bridge. They appear to be protecting the castle sitting in the background.

The Dragon Bridge has become one of the popular Ljubljana tourist attractions – and taking a photo of the dragons is practically required when sightseeing Ljubljana!

#6 The Ljubljana Cathedral

What to see in Ljubljana: The Cathedral

The St. Nicolas Church Ljubljana stands as the city’s Cathedral. Decorative inside and out, St. Nicolas is one of the best places to visit in Ljubljana for a bit of quiet in the middle of the Old Town.

Before entering, take a look at the main doors. The artwork depicts the history of the Slovenian people, from ancient to current times. The Ljubljana St. Nicolas Cathedral interior is Italian Baroque and includes sculptures and ceiling frescoes.

#7 Ljubljana Market

What to see in Ljubljana: The flower market

The Ljubljana Central Market is comprised of stalls selling fresh produce, a section of clothing and goods, a flower market and an indoor meat and cheese market. The market is one of the best places to visit in Ljubljana to experience the city’s vibrant culture.

The adjacent colonnade houses the fish market – along with several small restaurants the dole out freshly prepared meals. It’s one of the fun Ljubljana places to eat lunch while people watching.

Top Tip : Find the Mlekomat – a fresh milk vending machine – one of the more unique Ljubljana, Slovenia points of interest!

#8 Ljubljana Town Hall

On the east side of the river, a short stroll from the Triple Bridge, is Town Square (Mestni Trg).

The quaint square is home to the Ljubljana Town Hall, a building which dates to the late 1400’s. The structure was renovated in the current Venetian style in the mid-1700’s.

#9 Town Square Robba Fountain

View of Ljubljana Town Square Robba Fountain

In the center of Town Square is the fanciful Fountain of Three Carniolian Rivers. Also called the Robba Fountain for the Italian who designed it, Francesco Robba.

A top Ljubljana Baroque monument, the fountain was sculpted in the mid-1700’s and stands today as a symbol of the city. (However, the fountain in the square is a replica…the original is in the National Gallery of Slovenia.)

#10 Ljubljana Old Town

View across the river of Old Town Ljubljana

Walking south from the Town Hall on Mestni Trg, which was once the main street in Ljubljana, leads through the oldest parts of the city. About halfway along, Mestni Trg turns into Stari Trg, and this entire stretch is one of the top Ljubljana places to visit for tourists.

The wide pedestrian street is perfect for strolling. The Ljubljana Old Town restaurants that line the route sell traditional fare and there are shops selling local products that occupy the historic buildings.

#11 Levstikov Trg

Fountain at Levstikov Trg, Ljubljana, Slovenia

It’s just a 5 minute walk to the end of the street where it opens into Levstikov Trg. While it is not one of the top Ljubljana, Slovenia tourist attractions, it’s one of our favorite squares. In the center stands the Hercules Fountain, a replica of a 17th century fountain.

Also look for #34 Stari Trg. It is the Sticna Mansion, which dates to the year 1628 and is one of the top Ljubljana points of interest for it’s fine architectural style featuring stone carvings and arched wooden doorways.

#12 Upper Square, Ljubljana

What to see in Ljubljana: Upper Town

Moving away from the Ljubljana center to the east is an inclined street that leads to Upper Square (Gornji Trg). This is one of the Ljubljana best places to visit to see the oldest part of the city.

Dating to Medieval times, the street once led to the town gate. Up the street is the Baroque Church of St. Florian, which was built in 1672. This historic street is one of the places to see in Ljubljana that many visitors miss!

#13 St. James Church, Ljubljana

What to see in Ljubljana: St. James Church

Built between 1613 and 1615, the yellow St. James Church sits between the river, Castle Hill and the main road along the southern edge of the city center. The St. Mary’s Column was erected in 1682.

The square in front of the church is another one of the places to see in Ljubljana that was designed by the famous Slovenian architect, Joze Plecnik.

  #14 The Ljubljana Skyscraper

What to see in Ljubljana: View over the city from the Skyscraper

The 13-story building, named, “Skyscraper” (or Neboticnik in Slovenian), was built in 1933 and is a Ljubljana landmark. When it was built, it held the titles of ‘Tallest Residential Building in Europe” and “Tallest Building in Yugoslavia.”

Taking the elevator to the top floor, which hosts an outdoor café and viewing deck, is one of the best things to do in Ljubljana. The view over the city’s rooftops to the castle is a sight not-to-be-missed!

Top Tip : Looking for Ljubljana nightlife? After dark, the café turns into a club. It’s one of the fun things to do in Ljubljana at night!

#15 Serbian Orthodox Church Ljubljana

What to see in Ljubljana: Serbian Orthodox Church

The St. Cyril and Methodius Orthodox Church was built in 1936 for the growing Serbian population in Ljubljana. While it is one of the lesser-visited Ljubljana tourist attractions, we think it is stunning.

The interior is absolutely incredible with nearly every inch of space covered in colorful artwork. No photos allowed inside…so in order to see the interior, you will have to add it to your list of Ljubljana, Slovenia things to do!

#16 The US Embassy in Ljubljana, Slovenia

What to see in Ljubljana: US Embassy

As the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana is naturally home to many Embassies; however, not many rank as Ljubljana top attractions you’d want to visit. The US Embassy, on the other hand, is one of the Ljubljana things to see.

To be fair, the building is probably only interesting to Americans who are accustomed to their embassies being well hidden and often not in the city center . The US Embassy in Ljubljana, however, is located in a chalet that looks warm and welcoming…yet the armed guards didn’t invite us in for a cup of coffee.

#17 Tivoli Park, Ljubljana

Ljubljana park Tivoli City Park and Tivoli Castle

Not all Ljubljana top sights are man-made structures – there is nature, too! In fact, the city boasts several nature parks near Ljubljana downtown.

Tivoli Park is the most of popular of those parks – and a Ljubljana must-do! The expansive area has green lawns, a lake, the National Gallery of Slovenia (which is a museum housed in a mansion) and artwork sprinkled throughout.

Tivoli City Park is one of the best places to visit in Ljubljana for a breath of fresh air and a full dose of nature!

Where To Stay in Ljubljana, Slovenia

During our visits to Ljubljana, we stay in  Airbnb Apartments . We find that Ljubljana vacation apartments often have more space than hotels – and the added benefit of a kitchen. However, the fees for a short stay in a Ljubljana holiday rental can add up quickly.

Ljubljana Hotels

We think the best place to stay in Ljubljana is in the heart of the city – and there are many hotels to choose from in – or close to – the city center. We are featuring a few of the best Ljubljana hotels for your stay.

Want a deal? Use our Guide to Finding the Best Hotel Rooms at the Best Rates !

A classic hotel just steps from Preseren Square, Grand Hotel Union is housed in an iconic Art Nouveau building. In addition to the prime location, the hotel gets great reviews for the comfortable beds, a superb included breakfast and helpful staff. Check rates and availability!

A luxury stay in the city center, Hotel Cubo features modern rooms and amenities – including bathrobes and slippers. Guests love the spacious rooms and the excellent breakfast. Check rates!

How To Get to Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ljubljana can be reached by plane, train, bus or car. Our preferred method of getting anywhere is by flying (we are JetSetting Fools, after all!) and we have flown to Ljubljana from Zurich and London . However for regional destinations, it often makes more since to use buses and trains to Ljubljana.

Ljubljana Airport

The Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) is located 25km (15 miles) north of the city. The airport is serviced by European carriers to major destinations like London , Paris and Frankfurt .

Travelers can book private transfer from the Ljubljana, Slovenia airport to the city in advance! More Ljubljana Airport info can be found on the official site .

The Ljubljana train station is located on the north side of the city, just a 15 minute walk from the center.

Ljubljana Bus Station

The main bus station in Ljubljana is next to the train station. There are many Ljubljana bus connections – both within Slovenia and internationally.

We have arrived/departed from Ljubljana via bus to Zagreb, Croatia . In fact, for travelers going to or coming from Croatia , using the bus is the best option.

Map of Slovenia and Guidebook

It’s easy to get turned around in any foreign city…even Ljubljana! We have provided maps of Ljubljana that will help you get around to the top sights. However, it always a good idea to have a paper map – like this one – too. We also recommend picking up a guidebook for your trip to Slovenia.
