Longaberger Homestead offers new hands-on experiences

longaberger factory tour

FRAZEYSBURG, Ohio — The Longaberger Company’s Homestead is offering two new basket-making options and a new experiential tour of its famous basket-making facilities.

Visitors can choose from two new baskets to weave with the help of a Longaberger basket-maker in the 19th-century Crawford Barn, the new home for the Make A Basket Shop.

The barn also houses the company’s retired Fan Favorites Baskets, which can be purchased on site.

longaberger factory tour

At J.W.’s Workshop visitors can learn about the company’s history, tour the first Longaberger basket workshop and shop for exclusive baskets made by a Longaberger family member.

Two new tour opportunities are a floor tour led by an expert Longaberger basket-maker and a self-guided mezzanine tour.

A new shopping experience awaits groups at the Longaberger Factory Store and More, formerly the Homestead Shops, where Longaberger products are displayed in home and lifestyle displays and one-of-a-kind, limited quantity baskets and special treasures are shown in the Longaberger Vault.

Groups can also visit the nearby Patio Shops in Dresden to find additional Longaberger merchandise and clearance items or stop by the Longaberger Company Home Office to preview items in the current Longaberger Wishlist. Built in 1997, the seven-story office building is a replica of Longaberger’s Medium Market Basket.

Longaberger basket building tour draws huge crowd

longaberger factory tour

NEWARK – The company is no longer in business, but the love for Longaberger, its late founder and the seven-story basket-shaped building remains as strong as ever.

That was obvious at Sunday's tour of the famed building in east Newark where 500 once worked. A large crowd showed up early and stood in long lines for a chance to go inside the building vacated in 2016.

Former Longaberger employees, consultants and collectors, as well as Longaberger family members, attended the event, a fundraiser for Heritage Ohio, to see the building again, reminisce about the company's heyday and visit with old friends.

An announcement Monday night is expected to reveal a future use for the building. And, there are unrelated discussions to bring the company back in some form.

Steve Coon, co-owner of the building, opened the the lower two floors for tours to kick off the annual Heritage Ohio conference, in Newark for the first time. Coon is a board member of Heritage Ohio, which seeks to preserve Ohio's treasurers and revitalize communities.

“I thought 300 to 400 people," Coon said. "There's probably a couple thousand. They starting lining up at 11 a.m. (for 1 p.m. tours). Everybody was so proud to work here. How many companies are employees so proud of after the company is done."

Coon, who has owned the building with Bobby George, of Cleveland, for two years, said a conservancy easement on the structure will keep it as a basket, with the handles.

“To me, it’s a national treasure and should be looked at as such," Coon said. “I had a couple offers to buy the building and they wanted to take the handles off and I said that’s not going to happen. It’s not just a basket, but the largest basket in the world and there’ll never be another like it. I’m just glad it’s here in Ohio and I had the opportunity to buy it.”

Anita Rector, a former Longaberger executive sales director who started working for Dave Longaberger in 1968, at Popeye's Dairy Barn, said, "It’s a whole bag of mixed emotions for me. It was heartbreaking for me to drive past here for all these months, but today, to be around the energy again, and to know Steve is going to restore in back to the way it was, it’s lifted my spirits.”

Jim Klein, a former Longaberger president sought volunteers for the event on his Facebook page "Preserving Dave Longaberger's Great American Story." The response was overwhelming.

He received 500 responses, but only 40 volunteers were needed. Klein said probably 2,000 wanted to come here, but many live too far away.

“I liken this (building) to the St. Louis arch," Klein said. "It's the gateway to our American craft tradition. It’s world famous.”

Joyce Barrett, executive director of Heritage Ohio, said there were 464 pre-sold tickets, but many others just showed up.

Mary Farmer, of Zanesville, came to guide tours through the building. She worked for Longaberger from 1979 to 2005, the final years as executive director of manufacturing.

“I saw it on Facebook and my heart was just pulled to do it," Farmer said. "Longaberger was my life and meant so much more to me over the years. I just feel blessed I was able to step up and volunteer, and in hopes we can do something with this building in the future. How can you let something like this deteriorate and go away.”

Deb Snyder, of Crooksville, also came to lead tours after seeing the Facebook announcement. She was a basketmaker for 16 years.

“If they asked me to come back (to work) tomorrow, I’d be there," Snyder said. "Folks made us feel like celebrities, something very special we shared.”

Mary McGuckin and Victoria Przybycki, two former consultants from Michigan, sat at a table near the entrance to help out and greet visitors as they arrived.

“As soon as I heard they needed volunteers, I said OK, I’m in.," McGuckin said. "It’s heartbreaking to see all the offices empty.”

Connie Shull, a former consultant from Oil City, Pa., drove four hours to make the event.

“It’s in honor and memory of all the history and see old friends and customers that supported the company," Shull said.

Coon said it was two years ago at the Heritage Ohio conference in Columbus when Mayor Jeff Hall and Newark Development Partners Director Fred Ernest talked him into visiting the basket building.

"I walked in and saw this place. You could tell it’d been abandoned, and still one of the most beautiful buildings I’ve ever seen. It’s iconic. I’d argue it’s one of the most iconic buildings in the U.S. After I walked through the building, I said maybe I can do something.”

Coon, who owns Coon Restoration, bought the building in December of 2017, a month before it was to go to a foreclosure auction.

“I told Steve we’ve got to do something with this basket," Hall said. "You’ve just got to have patience and the right person come along, and he did. This building has so much history and beauty to it, we didn’t want it turned into something it didn’t deserve.”

Lynn Longaberger, wife of Dave’s brother Gary, said it was a very memorable day. She worked for the company for 27 years.

"It was very emotional when Gary and I walked in this morning," Lynn Longaberger said. "It’s amazing. I recognize a lot of Longaberger consultants here, and bringing their families, and the community that’s never been in here before. It’s heartwarming, and we appreciate everything Steve Coon is doing.”

Jerry Longaberger, Dave’s brother, was also amazed at the crowd of people filing through the lobby to tour the building.

“It’s kind of unbelievable this many people would want to see an empty building," Jerry Longaberger said.

Have you ever wondered what it looks like inside the former Longaberger Headquarters? Although the massive basket is no longer home to the former basket making company, it still stands in Newark, Ohio, despite rumors of its demolition. This fall, you can even take a rare tour of this iconic building. Heritage Ohio is hosting Picnic at the Big Basket, a one-of-a-kind event that will give you an inside look at the former company and this unique piece of Ohio architecture.

  1. Longaberger Basket Factory

We missed the factory tour, but after some research, discovered that there are only about 300 workers left after a high employment rate of 8000.
