How To Buy The Best Malaysia Tourist Sim Card 2021

How To Buy The Best Malaysia Tourist Sim Card 2024

Thankfully, getting a travel sim card Malaysia is very easy. You just need ID and some ringgit (and sometimes not even the latter if you purchase from home!). I describe the best (and easiest ways) to get a traveller sim Malaysia below.

But first, a bit of background information.

Best Travel Sim Malaysia

Mobile and data overage is generally very good in Malaysia on any prepaid sim card Malaysia plan. We never had a problem.

I always like having a Malaysia data sim card for tourist so I know I always have maps, Google and internet access for work and email. In fact, my sim card data access is often better than hotel wifi! It’s also important to have one of the Malaysian sim cards if you’re travelling Malaysia solo so that you have a way to contact people.

Also, these days I find many of my travel bookings are on my phone, like bus tickets and entry tickets, and I need to be able to access them without problems.

You will always need ID when picking up or purchasing a Malaysia travel sim card as it’s legally required. Your passport is perfect for this.

I highly recommend you get a prepaid plan. These require minimal effort and are very good value. As a tourist, they are also basically your only choice.

You can, of course, use your sim card from home if you have a phone carrier that allows this or from a neighbouring country. However, this is likely to be much much much more expensive than buying a Malaysia prepaid sim card for tourist. It’s such an easy process to buy a prepaid sim that this is what I recommend rather than using international roaming.

You can buy a prepaid sim card in Malaysia as soon as you arrive in most international airports to make it extra easy or use a service on Klook to pick up your sim card on arrival which makes it even easier.

Otherwise, many shopping malls and bus stations have a chance to purchase the best tourist sim card Malaysia as well. I promise that you won’t find it hard to find somewhere to buy one!

If you are very particular about what service you get and exactly what it covers, then I recommend purchasing from the company direct (often they will have kiosks at arrival airports) so you can ask any questions. Otherwise, you can buy them from whoever.

If you need more data or talk credit for your sim card prepaid, it’s also very easy to purchase top ups from many places or online. Usually, you can do this at any 7-Eleven or one of hundreds of other places. You can ask when picking up your sim card about where to add credit to your Malaysia prepaid card.

As an alternative, you can also get an eSim before you leave home that will give you peace of mind that you will have data for your whole trip (including surrounding countries) and you’re all set to go.

Airalo is especially handy for this.

When choosing the best sim card in Malaysia for you, take a minute to think about your needs – do you plan on making local calls and sending local texts, or do you really just want to use the internet/data?

Most people you need to deal with in Malaysia (like tour operators and taxi drivers) will have whatsapp which makes a Malaysian sim card with some call credit included unnecessary, but it can still come in handy. You can get around this by using a service like Skype so you can ring local numbers even if your phone plan just has data.

Option 1: Purchase The Best Sim Card For Tourist In Malaysia Before Leaving Home!

Your first choice for buying a Malaysia sim card tourist pack is to purchase your sim card online before leaving home. This has the benefit of making it very easy to pick-up your prepaid sim on arrival so you are all set to go.

Even better, if your phone allows you to have an eSim, like most iPhones and many others, you can buy and activate your sim card without even needing to talk to anyone.

This is the cheapest and easiest option for getting a travel internet sim card.

This is especially beneficial if you want to make sure you have a sim card to go as soon as you arrive and want things as easy as possible. It works best for people who want data more than a sim card to make calls.

There are plenty of Malaysia sim card airport options, with many of the major airports in Malaysia offering card pick-up. It’s easiest in Kuala Lumpur at terminal 2, but there are other options too.

I personally recommend buying an eSim as the best option if your phone handles eSim for ultra ease.

You can do this via the following links. These sim cards are for Malaysia only.

  • Kuala Lumpur airport Tune Talk (KLIA2 only)
  • Kuala Lumpur airport Celecom (KLIA2 only)
  • Kuala Lumpur airport Digi (KLIA2 only)
  • eSim (up to 5GB)
  • eSim (unlimited data)
  • Airalo eSim, perfect for multiple countries and super easy set up.

If you click on the links above, you will get the latest deals as well as photos and instructions so you can be completely clear on where to pick it up in the case of the first two physical sim cards. For the eSims, you’ll get an email with an activation code so you can get started.

It is very easy to buy sim card online Malaysia using this method.

All of these choices of sim card in Malaysia for tourist are great value with good coverage.

There are usually two options for each provider and you can pick the best one for you depending on how long you are in Malaysia and how much data you need.

At the time of writing this guide, the price starts at RM23, so as you can see the Malaysia sim card price is very reasonable.

You can buy one right now for a great price on Klook by clicking here.

Comparison Of Malaysia Tourist Sim Card Options

The following table gives you all the options for pre-purcashing a Malaysia sim card for tourist. Simply click on the option that best suits you, buy and follow the instructions to pick it up. It’s really easy to buy Malaysia sim card online and saves the hassle of trying to work things out on arrival after a long flight!

All providers have similar coverage and are good choices. Note that the Digi and Celecom options are currently only available in KLIA2, so only buy this option if you are flying into there (usually just AirAsia and other budget options). Tune Talk is available at both Kuala Lumpur International Airport terminals though as well as Penang and Kota Kinabalu.

These options are only for people who hold a foreign (so not Malaysian) passport. The sim card price Malaysia will depend on how much data and minutes you have included as well as how long the Sim card is valid for. For the plans mentioned below, click on the provider links and you’ll find additional options if you need a sim card for longer.

* 5GB at high speeds, 10GB at 64 kbps  ** 10GB at high speeds, 10GB at 64 kbps  *** Up to 20GB at 3Mbps then 512 kbps  **** Up to 60GB at 6Mbps then 512 kbps ***** 15GB at high speeds, unlimited at 128 kbps ****** 500MB a day at high speeds then unlimited at 384 kbps ******* This is the starting price. There are many options

Note: The above table is correct at time of publishing and should give you an indication of the best prepaid plan Malaysia prices. However, things do change so double check the price and allowances before purchase. Also check that the collection point is open at your arrival time.

Option 2: Buy A Digi Travel Sim Card Malaysia On Arrival

Another way to buy a Digi sim card Malaysia is in person once you arrive in Malaysia. It’s also very easy to buy a sim card when you get there – it just takes longer and usually costs more.

Digi is the third largest sim provider in Malaysia and our personal favourite. We are big fans of a Digi traveller sim card.

They offer great plans and prices for their Malaysia travel sim options, they are easy to buy and top up and have great coverage and data speed. Their Malaysia sim card rates are some of the best around.

All sim sizes are available.

Note that they do offer multiple plans which can be confusing especially as you need to make sure you buy the right one when you first sign up or you can end up wasting money by swapping plans.

And it is cheaper to pre-buy your sim card here for Kuala Lumpur .

So think about how long you want the sim card to work for, how much data you want and whether calls are important too. The good part is that top ups are very cheap so it will all work out if you make a mistake.

Picking up a Digi sim card for tourist is very easy on arrival in the country with kiosks in many major airports. We usually fly into KLIA2 and you can find Digi as soon as you exit customs. Just walk straight ahead on the left side of the exit. Look for a big yellow sign!

At KLIA, you can find some sim providers just before you hit the baggage claim. See photo below.

Sim card providers as you walk to baggage claim at KLIA

At KLIA, you can find Digi, Tune Talk and some other providers just to the left as you exit customs. The following video shows you where. Note that this was taken before the pandemic. If you have been to KLIA recently, it would be great to find out if it’s still in the same spot.

If you’re looking for the best prepaid plan Malaysia offers for tourist sims, the current Digi prepaid sim plans are…

Option 3: Buy A Regional Sim Card Before You Leave

Travelling to other countries in the region during your trip?

A sim card that works in these countries too can be the best way to go. They cost a little more but will make life easier.

There are two options you can easily buy online before you go. One is an eSim (so make sure your phone works with this before purchase). This is ultra easy as you can set it up without having to visit a physical collection point. It works in basically all of SE asia.

There is also an eSim which is just for Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. The table below shows the price for 7 days, but they also have prices for 5 and 10 days here .

Finally, there is an eSim you can buy from Airalo that basically works everywhere. I bought one for my recent trip and was able to use it in Malaysia, Thailand, Armenia, Georgia, Israel, Dubai and Cyprus! Everywhere I went on the trip.

There is also a physical sim which works in 11 countries which includes most of SE Asia, Macau, Hong Kong and Australia. You can collect this from KLIA2.

Here are your options. They are both data only.

* Up to 15GB at high speeds then 128 kbps  ** Up to 20GB at high speeds then 128 kbps *** Up to 20GB at high speeds then 384 kbps

Option 4: Have A Sim Card Delivered Before You Leave

If you like the idea of already having your sim card set to go before you leave home but want a physical sim, there are options to buy one and have it delivered to your home before you go.

You can find options for the following countries below:

Hi, I will be traveling I. Malaysia for 6 weeks (42 days), which SIM card would you recommend I buy?

Also, should I purchase the SIM card online or at he airport?

I will be flying in the KLIA main terminal.

Kind regards.

Hi Jacob! Any of the options in this article will work for you. You can easily extend the duration and buy more credit once you are there. When you are picking up the card (if you buy online) or buying the card, you can ask them how you can do that but usually it’s as simple as going in a 7/11. You can buy before or on arrival. Before makes it slightly easier and quicker when you are there.

Hi Josh, your article is helping me a lot! Can I buy Digi LIVE sim card at the airport? I really don’t need that much data anyway. And just in any case I need to top up, how much is the minimum amount? Many thanks in advance!

Hi Martina! The people at Digi can help you set up your sim card with whatever plan you like. I’m not sure about minimum top up amount. It would be low though like RM5.

Key Takeaways of Purchasing a SIM card in Malaysia

  • Malaysia offers a variety of prepaid and eSIM options for tourists from providers such as Celcom, Digi, and Tune Talk, which cater to different needs and can be pre-ordered online for convenience.
  • Factors like coverage, speed, signal strength, and cost are crucial when choosing a SIM card, with Celcom noted for its extensive LTE coverage, while providers like U Mobile offer cost-effective plans.
  • Tourists can purchase SIM cards at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. However, it might be costlier and have limited options, or at local stores and online for better deals, with activation requiring a valid ID and possibly a fingerprint.

Things to Do in the Penang National Park

From KL to Penang, purchasing a physical SIM card must only be done once.

Navigating Malaysia SIM Card Options for Tourists

Setting foot in a new country can be exhilarating but requires reliable communication options.

Thankfully, Malaysia offers many SIM card options for tourists, ensuring you stay connected during your travels.

Whether you’re an ardent Instagrammer needing high-speed data or someone who prefers voice calls, there’s a SIM card tailored to your needs.

One of the most popular options among tourists is a prepaid SIM card. Providers such as Tune Talk and Digi Malaysia offer enticing prepaid packages, including prepaid local sim cards. These can be conveniently pre-ordered through platforms like Klook, often at discounted rates.

But what if you prefer the convenience of constant connectivity without the hassle of changing SIM cards? Enter the world of eSIMs – a virtual alternative to traditional SIM cards.

Prepaid SIM Cards: What You Need to Know

In Malaysia, prepaid SIM cards are popular among tourists, offering many benefits.

From extensive coverage to affordable options, key players such as Maxis, Digi, U Mobile, Celcom, and Tune Talk ensure you stay connected, explore the vibrant cityscape, or wander through serene rainforests.

Navigating through the array of prepaid SIM cards can be daunting. Here’s a quick rundown. Celcom offers eight feature-rich plans, U Mobile offers six, and there are attractive tourist-specific plans like the Tune Talk 4G SIM Card.

Prices can vary based on the data plan chosen, but rest assured, you can find an option that caters to your specific needs.

E SIM Cards: The Virtual Alternative

If you’re a fan of digital convenience, an e-sim card is your best bet. An eSIM is a digital SIM card that comes pre-installed in your phone.

It allows you to retain your existing number and eliminates the need for physical SIM cards, making the transition to a local network in Malaysia a breeze.

Now, you might be wondering about the compatibility of your device with eSIMs. While most modern smartphones are eSIM compatible, confirm this before travelling.

Providers like Celcom and Airalo operate on Digi’s 4G/LTE network, ensuring compatibility. Once you’ve purchased your eSIM online, you’ll receive a QR code via email. Follow the instructions to activate it on your device; you’re connected!

Essential Considerations for Tourist SIM Cards in Malaysia

With many options available, choosing the correct SIM card can seem overwhelming. The key factors to consider when selecting a mobile operator in Malaysia are:

  • Signal strength

With its impressive 94.5% LTE population coverage, Celcom is a popular choice among consumers looking for reliable signal strength nationwide.

However, other operators, such as Digi, offer suitable tourist plans, providing prepaid and postpaid options for added flexibility.

Network Coverage and Internet Speed

Regarding network coverage and internet speed, not all operators are created equal. Here is an overview of the coverage provided by different operators in Malaysia:

  • Celcom’s 3G network covers over 80% of the population, while its 4G/LTE network reaches over 90%.
  • U Mobile offers extensive coverage across Malaysia.
  • Unifi and U Mobile may have limited 4G/5G coverage in areas like Borneo.

In urban centres and major cities, you can expect reliable 4G services, often surpassing the quality of hotel WiFi. However, coverage can be patchy in rural areas, particularly East Malaysia.

Digi and Celcom are recognized for their strong 4G/5G coverage and high-speed internet, with Celcom offering the fastest overall download and upload speeds.

Comparing Data Plans and Prices

While coverage and speed are critical, the cost factor is equally important. Malaysia’s mobile operators provide a variety of data plans and prices to cater to diverse requirements, including Malaysia’s sim card prices. Some options include:

  • Celcom’s postpaid plans start at RM 38 per month
  • Prepaid plans starting from RM 10
  • U Mobile is known for its cost-effective plans, although they offer relatively less data and coverage.

Certain physical prepaid SIM cards provided by mobile virtual network operators also offer additional features like VoLTE and VoWiFi, unlimited calls to specific networks, and complete data with a speed cap of approximately 6 Mbps to ensure network stability.

Where to Purchase Your Malaysia Tourist SIM

Once you’ve decided on the type of SIM card and the provider, the next step is the purchase. You can buy a SIM card at Kuala Lumpur International Airport upon arrival.

While convenient, it’s not the most recommended option due to higher costs and limited options.

A better alternative is to purchase your SIM card from:

  • an official retail store of a mobile internet provider
  • convenience stores
  • bus stations
  • online on sites like Klook.com

This ensures the best service, prices, and verification that everything works properly before leaving the store.

At Kuala Lumpur International Airport

If you prefer to get things sorted immediately, you can purchase your SIM card at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The airport hosts prepaid SIM card shops like:

  • Maxis Hotlink

Some shops, like Maxis at KLIA Terminal M Arrival Hall, operate 24/7 for your convenience.

While buying at the airport provides immediate connectivity, it’s important to note that options may be limited, and prices may be slightly higher. Therefore, exploring other options is a good idea if you’re not in a rush.

Purchased discounted SIMS at KLIA or KLIA2 and get your travel in Malaysia off to a smooth beginning.

In-City Prepaid SIM Card Shops

Consider purchasing your SIM card within the city for a wider variety and potentially better deals.

Conveniently, you can purchase mobile prepaid Malaysia SIM cards at any 7-Eleven store. Other convenience stores like KK Super Mart and My News also provide SIM card top-ups.

Establishments like Tune Talk and Bluecube are popular among tourists for purchasing SIM cards. These stores offer various options and can assist in setting up your SIM for immediate use.

Activation and Registration: Getting Your SIM Card Ready to Use

With your new SIM card in Malaysia, it’s time to activate and register it. While this may seem daunting, the process is usually straightforward and quick.

You will need a valid ID – a passport for tourists – for the registration process, which includes a fingerprint requirement.

Once the registration is done, it’s time to activate your prepaid or eSIM card. Most service providers have mobile apps that guide you through the activation process.

Quick Start Guide: Activation Steps

Activating a prepaid SIM card involves a few simple steps:

  • Download and launch the mobile app corresponding to your service provider.
  • Tap on ‘Activate SIM’ or ‘New User’.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions, including scanning the SIM barcode or inputting personal details.

For eSIM cards, the process is even more straightforward. Here’s how to set up your eSIM:

  • Purchase an eSIM card and receive a unique QR code.
  • Scan the QR code to install your eSIM profile onto your device.
  • You’re all set for your Malaysian adventure!

Understanding the Registration Requirements

The registration process for a Malaysian SIM card is efficient and can usually be completed within a few minutes. Here are the steps:

  • Present a valid ID, such as your passport, and have it copied.
  • Complete the registration form provided by the service provider.
  • Provide your fingerprint for verification purposes.

It’s worth noting that the minimum age to register a SIM card in Malaysia is 12 years old. In some cases, additional verification may be required, such as the MyTentera card issued by the National Registration Department for the Malaysian Armed Forces.

Managing Your Data: Top-Up Options and Tracking Usage

Managing your data is essential once your SIM card is activated and registered. This involves knowing how to top up your data and monitor usage.

Remember, the last thing you want is to run out of data while navigating unfamiliar streets or capturing that perfect Instagram shot!

You can add credit to your prepaid SIM card by purchasing top-ups from 24-hour convenience stores like 7-Eleven and Speedmart 99.

Alternatively, use your service provider’s app to add credit. For example, to top up a Yes Malaysia SIM card, text REL followed by your phone number and the voucher code to 0183301111.

Finding Top-Up Vendors and Convenience Stores

Running out of data mid-journey can be frustrating. Fortunately, topping up your Malaysian SIM card is easy, thanks to the numerous vendors offering this service.

Popular vendors for top-ups include:

  • Maxis/Hotlink

These vendors are found in major shopping centres, airports, and convenience stores like 7-Eleven in Kuala Lumpur. Many of these stores operate round-the-clock, ensuring you’re always connected, no matter the time of day.

Apps and Services for Monitoring Data

Keeping track of your data usage ensures you never run out when you need it most. Several apps and services can help you do this, including:

  • Data Usage Monitor
  • My Data Manager
  • Onavo Count
  • 3G Watchdog
  • Data Monitor

These apps monitor your data usage, giving you control over how much data you use at any given time.

They also generate individualized reports that help you understand your data consumption patterns, making managing your data more efficient.

In addition to these third-party apps, Malaysian telcos provide applications for tracking data consumption. Examples include:

  • Celcom Life
  • HOTLINK by Maxis

These apps can also help you set up data usage alerts, ensuring you’re always aware of your data consumption.

Staying Connected Beyond Borders: International Roaming with Your Malaysia SIM

You might wonder how to stay connected if your travels take you beyond Malaysia’s borders. The answer lies in international roaming services. However, it’s important to note that international roaming rates may be higher than local usage.

While international roaming allows you to use your Malaysian SIM card while travelling abroad, it’s also worth considering local SIM cards from the country you’re visiting. This can often be a more cost-effective and convenient solution, especially for longer trips.

International Roaming Services and Rates

International roaming is a service that lets you use your phone number while travelling abroad.

In Malaysia, this service is provided by mobile networks like Maxis, U Mobile, and Hotlink. However, it’s important to note that international roaming rates may vary based on the destination country.

As much as international roaming makes staying connected easy, it can be pretty expensive. Therefore, it’s worth exploring local SIM cards from the country you’re visiting or using WiFi hotspot services such as Roaming Man, Traveloka, and Travel Recommends.

Alternatives to International Roaming

If the high costs of international roaming are a concern, you can consider alternatives. One such option is to use a local SIM card from the country you’re visiting. This not only ensures you stay connected but can also be more cost-effective.

Another alternative is using WiFi hotspot services. Malaysian tourists travelling abroad can use services like Roaming Man, Traveloka, and Travel Recommends.

These services offer the convenience of staying connected without worrying about excessive roaming charges or purchasing a local SIM card in Malaysia.

Maximizing Your Malaysia Experience: Additional Tips and Tricks

Having a reliable Malaysian SIM card is just one part of making the most of your travel experience. Additional features of Malaysian SIM cards can further enhance your journey.

For instance, providers like Digi offer prepaid and postpaid plans specifically designed for tourists, and the Hotlink Tourist SIM card provides perks such as an 8GB high-speed internet quota.

In addition to utilizing your SIM card effectively, consider downloading local transportation apps like Grab and online food delivery services for added convenience.

Finally, always be aware of phishing scams, use legitimate service providers, and ensure your personal SIM card information is accurate to avoid network issues and maintain a reliable connection.

Summary of the best SIM cards in Malaysia

In conclusion, choosing the right Malaysian SIM card ensures a smooth and memorable travel experience.

Whether you opt for a traditional prepaid SIM card or prefer the digital convenience of an eSIM, staying connected during your Malaysian adventure is relatively easy and affordable.

How does a Prepaid Malaysia SIM card works?

It’s quite simple — most international cellphones work with a Malaysia tourist SIM card.

Telecom providers in Penang and Malaysia are based on the GSM system. 3G (UMTS) frequencies and 4G (LTE) frequencies work flawlessly on any compatible mobile phone — you may have some problems if you are coming from the USA. Please check with your mobile phone provider before traveling to Malaysia.

The main Telecom operators in Malaysia are Maxis, Digi, U Mobile, Celcom and Tune Talk and all have pretty good coverage and affordable offers for Malaysia tourist SIM cards.

Malaysia tourist SIM card Coverage in Penang and Malaysia

In most of Malaysia’s cities and main urban centers, all Malaysian Telecom operators have good 4G coverage — most times even better than hotel WiFi services.

Wherever 4G is not strong, 3G and 2G signal is widely available in Peninsular Malaysia. But if you are planning on traveling Borneo  remember that outside of Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and the other cities, mobile coverage is not very good. Among all operators, Celcom has the best Borneo coverage outside of cities and in rural areas in East Malaysia.

Topping up Data on your Malaysia tourist SIM card

Prepaid SIM cards in Malaysia, like their name implies, work based on a pre-existing credit you purchase with your Malaysia tourist SIM card.

What happens when your credit expires or you have no more data? Simple. Most 24/hours convenience stores like 7-Eleven and Speedmart 99 sell pre-paid top-ups for all Malaysia tourist SIM cards.

Just pay whatever amount you want to recharge, and the store clerk will print a receipt containing a number. You have to access your mobile operator menu on your mobile (generally by pressing the “#” key followed by some numbers) and a recorded voice will assist you to prompt that top-up code.

You will receive an SMS confirming the successful top-up, and you are done!

What is the Best prepaid plan in Malaysia for tourists?

The best prepaid plan in Malaysia for tourists vastly depends on your needs and where you are traveling.

We have tried many Telecom companies over our 10 years+ of life in Malaysia, and these days, we always recommend these Malaysia tourist SIM cards to all our friends and family who come visit:

U Mobile Tourist Sim Card

U Mobile Tourist SIM Card is great, as it comes with UNLIMITED Internet data (including free WhatsApp, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Grab and other important Apps) for only RM 30 for 30 Days . That’s RM1 (0.20$ cents) a day for all the apps and the browsing you want! This Malaysia tourist SIM card also has a 3GB hotspot you can use to connect and browse with your laptop or other devices.

If you stay in Malaysia for 7 days or less, U Mobile offers an RM12 for 7 days package with a 1GB hotspot and also unlimited calling time to all networks. Both are pretty sweet deals.

Digi 4G Plus Tourist SIM Card

Digi is another operator with good coverage and cheap prices. They offer a Digi 4G Plus Traveller SIM card package that costs RM40 for 15 Days and offers 10GB of data and 1GB a day for social networks like Whatsapp, Facebook and WeChat, and 30 minutes of calls.

They also have a cheaper RM20 per 7 Day plan with 2GB of data and 1GB a day for social networks like Whatsapp, Facebook and WeChat, and 10 minutes of calls.

Tune Talk Traveller Data Plans

Another option is the Tune Talk card by AirAsia. It comes in two different data sizes, the 15GB lite and 20GB power plan. 4G high-speed Internet is 5GB for the lite and 10GB for the power plan.

What is the best prepaid plan in Penang?

We believe that, based on our experience, cost and coverage, the best pre-paid SIM card for tourists in Penang are Digi and U Mobile.

They work fine and you won’t need much more data than what they offer.

Where Can I get a Malaysia tourist SIM card?

You have three main options:

Getting a Malaysia tourist SIM card Before you Leave Home

If you, like us, want to minimize waiting times and headaches when you travel, why don’t you get your Malaysia tourist SIM card before you travel to Malaysia? It’s very easy and you can do so via Klook, a site for travel bookings in Asia.

This is the best and cheapest options, as Klook always offers discounts

These SIM cards work best for those tourists who want data and can make local and international calls via WhatsApp and Skype. If you are looking for regular calling minutes, you may be better off by visiting a Telecom operator center when in Malaysia.

But we still recommend you pre-order your Malaysia tourist SIM card from home and pick it up at one of these airports:

Kuala Lumpur KLIA2 airport Penang airport Johor Bharu airport Langkawi airport Kota Kinabalu airport

Click on the links above to be redirected to a purchase page where you’ll be able to see pictures and read more about all the available options. Those cards are Tune Talk mostly, but you can also get

Digi Malaysia tourist SIM card in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bharu airport

Celcom Malaysia tourist SIM card in Kuala Lumpur KLIA2 airport

Getting a Malaysia tourist SIM card in a shop

If you can’t or don’t want to preorder your Malaysia tourist SIM card, you can buy one on arrival at any Malaysian airport or once you get to a city.

Remember that, this way, you may have to wait longer for queues or not be able to be immediately connected as you disembark. But no issues: if you go to a shop, you’ll be able to talk to a representative who may help you get started with your Malaysia tourist SIM card.

Malaysia tourist SIM card

It will be however more expensive, as shops don’t have the discounts that pre-booking on Klook has. The best again is getting your tourist SIM card in advance at Kuala Lumpur airport or Kota Kinabalu airport .

Take a WiFi Hotspot with You

The last option you have is to rent a WiFi hotspot device to connect and roam with no hassle. This works definitely better for families and groups, as these portable hotspots usually allow up to 5 devices to be connected simultaneously, and have unlimited data .

Prices start at RM13/day and you can rent and pick up these devices either in Kuala Lumpur ( KLIA or KLIA2 ) or in other nearby Southeast Asian hubs.

Skyroam  (which is, of course, a bit more expensive at RM40++/day ) is a more powerful wifi hotspot that can connect up to 10 devices, has an unlimited amount of data, and, the perk, it has 16 hours of battery life and also works as a power bank. At last, it’s a global router, so if you let’s say, hop over the border from Penang to Thailand , you will still have Internet.

You may want to consider renting a Skyroam hotspot if you travel in a bigger group, for a longer time, or need a reliable internet connection for longer hours

This is a complete list with direct purchase links for your convenience:

We hope that this guide will help you get the best-prepaid plan in Malaysia and a traveller SIM card that suits your needs.

Best Tourist Sim Cards in Malaysia in 2024

malaysia sim card for traveller

If you’re planning a trip to Malaysia, having a reliable sim card is essential for seamless travel experiences. With internet access, exploring new cities becomes a breeze as you can easily discover the best restaurants, locate your accommodation, arrange transportation, and share memorable moments with your loved ones.

While international roaming is an option, the costs can quickly accumulate. That’s why we recommend either obtaining an eSIM or a local sim card to enjoy the advantages of local phone rates. Thankfully, securing either option in Malaysia is incredibly convenient, but it’s helpful to know which one suits you best.

This comprehensive guide is designed to provide you with all the necessary information, including updated pricing, ensuring that you make an informed decision when purchasing a sim card in Malaysia.

Table of Contents

Best sim card in malaysia for tourists.

Sim cards in Malaysia are generally pretty cheap and you can’t really go wrong with any of the main providers. My top picks are Digi, Celcom and Maxis who all offer strong coverage, fast networks and good reliability.

15GB of data is more than enough data for most travellers which is why I recommend the Digi prepaid sim card with 15GB of 5G enabled data for just RM20 ( about $4.5 USD).

eSims in Malaysia are quite a bit more expensive than local sim cards so if you’re looking for the best value then you should go with the Digi prepaid sim card above. If you’re short on time and you are happy to pay a little extra then you can buy the Airalo eSim here which is far more convenient than picking up a sim card in person.

Malaysia Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Malaysia costs RM20 in April 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Malaysia will cost between $4.50 USD and $40 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Malaysia which includes 5GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $15 USD.

Malaysia Sim Card Providers

In Malaysia, the main sim card providers that dominate the telecommunications industry are Digi, Maxis, and Celcom. Digi, owned by Telenor Group, is known for its competitive prepaid and postpaid plans, offering reliable network coverage and affordable data packages. Maxis, a leading telecommunications company, provides a wide range of prepaid and postpaid services tailored to the needs of different customer segments. Its extensive network coverage and attractive add-on services make it a popular choice among consumers. Celcom, owned by Axiata Group Berhad, also offers a comprehensive range of mobile services, including voice, data, and international roaming. Its strong network infrastructure and customizable plans make it a preferred option for many in Malaysia. These three major players constantly strive to improve their services to meet the growing demands of the digital-savvy nation.

Digi Tourist Sim

Digi, a leading telecommunication company in Malaysia, offers excellent tourist sim cards. Their sim cards provide unlimited data, allowing tourists to stay connected while exploring Malaysia’s vibrant cities and stunning landscapes. How to Get a Sim Card in Malaysia

Identify mobile providers: Digi, Maxis and Celcom are your best options in Malaysia.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Malaysia

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Malaysia at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Malaysia then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Malaysia have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Digi, Maxis and Celcom. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Malaysia are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Malaysia with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

Malaysia eSim

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Malaysia. The Airalo Malaysia eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $15 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Malaysia without having to venture outside.

Airalo Malaysia

Our preferred eSim provider in Malaysia is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Malaysia and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Malaysia eSim uses the Maxis & Digi networks to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the Maxis & Digi networksnetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Malaysia.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s Malaysia eSim:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $4.50 USD 2GB data valid for 15 days – Price: $8 USD 3GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $10.50 USD 5GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $15 USD 10GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $25 USD 20GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $40 USD

For most travellers we recommend the 5GB data plan for $15 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Malaysia

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Malaysia eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s Malaysia eSim uses the Maxisnetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in Malaysia

Here are the plans and prices for Holafly’s Malaysia eSim:

Unlimited data valid for 5 days – Price: $19 USD Unlimited data valid for 7 days – Price: $27 USD Unlimited data valid for 10 days – Price: $34 USD Unlimited data valid for 15 days – Price: $47 USD Unlimited data valid for 20 days – Price: $54 USD Unlimited data valid for 30 days – Price: $64 USD Unlimited data valid for 60 days – Price: $84 USD Unlimited data valid for 90 days – Price: $99 USD

What is an eSim?

An eSIM, also known as an embedded SIM, refers to a digital SIM card that is built into devices like smartphones, tablets, or smartwatches. Unlike traditional physical SIM cards, an eSIM does not require any physical insertion or removal from the device.

Instead, the eSIM is seamlessly integrated into the device’s hardware and can be remotely activated and programmed by a mobile network operator. This allows users to effortlessly switch between various mobile networks or plans without the need to physically swap SIM cards.

The introduction of eSIM technology brings in convenience, flexibility, and ease of use, particularly for frequent travelers or individuals who often switch between different mobile networks or travel internationally. It eliminates the requirement to purchase and physically insert physical SIM cards, making it much more convenient to manage multiple mobile connections on a single device.

To activate an eSIM, users simply need to scan a QR code provided by their mobile network operator or manually input the activation details. Once activated, the device can seamlessly connect to the chosen mobile network and avail all usual voice, data, and messaging services, just like a traditional SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

Using an eSIM can be beneficial for various reasons. First, it offers convenience as you don’t have to physically insert or remove a SIM card when switching networks or plans. This is particularly useful for frequent travelers who need to use local SIM cards in different countries. Second, eSIM allows for dual SIM functionality, meaning you can have two active mobile numbers on the same device. This is helpful for separating personal and work numbers or managing multiple phone lines. Third, eSIMs save space as they are embedded within the device, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card slot. This allows manufacturers to make smaller devices or use the extra space for other components. Fourth, eSIMs enable remote provisioning, allowing for activation and management of mobile plans over the air. This eliminates the need for a physical SIM card or visiting a store when activating or switching plans, providing greater flexibility and convenience. Lastly, using an eSIM-compatible device ensures future-proofing as more mobile networks and service providers offer support for eSIMs. This allows you to take advantage of new services and offerings as they become available. Overall, eSIM technology offers flexibility, convenience, and future-proofing for mobile connectivity, making it a compelling choice for many users.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

Buying a Prepaid Sim Card for Malaysia in 2024

malaysia sim card for traveller

Are you planning your trip to Malaysia and wondering what is the best way to stay connected when traveling to Malaysia? Don't get fooled by slow overseas data plans and don't let high data roaming charges ruin your trip. This is the ultimate guide for finding the best sim card for your trip to Malaysia in 2024.

Find out everything you need to know about buying a sim card for tourists in Malaysia, where to buy a sim card, up to date prices as per April 2024, the best e-sim cards for Malaysia, the best 4G/5G network, my recommendation, a vlog about my arrival in Kuala Lumpur and buying a local prepaid sim card, info about international sim cards and more.

Figuring out how to stay connected is one of the first things I do when planning my next trip. Being a  full time nomadic travel blogger  since 2012 I have been looking for the best ways to get connected for more than 10 years now. In the past I always used to buy a local prepaid sim card in every country  on arrival, nowadays I pretty much always use e-sim cards to stay connected.

Since I like to document all my travel tips and I am also trying to  visit every country in the world  you can already find more than 200 sim card guides on Traveltomtom from all over the world:  China , Hong Kong ,  Saudi Arabia , Singapore ,  Thailand , Bangkok ,  Indonesia , Bali ,  Vietnam , Philippines ,  USA , Europe , Dubai , Istanbul , London , Paris , Brazil , Australia , New Zealand , etc.

Traveltomtom also wrote a specific guide for the best e-sim cards for traveling to Malaysia in 2024 .

So next time you are planning your adventure abroad come check out Traveltomtom for the latest prepaid and e-sim card advice for your next holiday destination. Bookmark me and let me help you save money!

Why buying a sim card for Malaysia?

Life can be pretty challenging these days without a working data connection on your mobile and so is traveling. Think about ordering a taxi through an app, getting directions from Google Maps or simply staying in touch with your loved ones back home. No need to tell you that traveling to Malaysia is much easier with a local prepaid sim card.

Traveltomtom recommends you to buy a prepaid sim card in Malaysia, because it is easy, cheap and takes only a couple minutes. It is the best way to save on high roaming costs. Also a reminder that public WiFi is often slow and unreliable and it is an UNSECURED network. The use of a VPN is recommended.

Be aware: your phone needs to be UNLOCKED to make sure a local prepaid sim card from Malaysia is working in your phone. This also counts for international prepaid sim cards and e-sim cards for Malaysia.

My recommendation

Based on research and user experience Traveltomtom recommends a Digi prepaid sim card for traveling in Malaysia. For around $10 USD you can already get 30 GB data for 1 month.

You can also buy a lot of unlimited data prepaid sim cards in Malaysia, but they are all on limited data speed of mostly 6 Mbps and therefore not directly recommended.

Digi has truly high speed internet and no data speed cap and therefore Traveltomtom's first recommendation!

Of course does Traveltomtom also recommend e-sim cards and there are some amazing e-sim card deals you can directly order on the internet.

Keep in mind that on arrival in Malaysia, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport or in any phone store tourists can only buy physical prepaid sim cards. E-sim cards are not available for tourists in Malaysia, only on the internet.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Malaysia via either Nomad , SimOptions or Airalo .

Check out Traveltomtom's comparison of the best e-sim cards for traveling to Malaysia in 2024 , including all FAQ's and everything else you need to know about using e-sim cards.

Mobile internet operators in Malaysia

There are 6 mobile operators in Malaysia and they all offer prepaid sim cards for tourists:

  • Maxis/Hotlink
  • Unifi/Bebas

On top of the above mobile internet providers there are also a couple MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) but they are too small to consider as a good prepaid sim card for Malaysia.

Prices for data plans differ slightly per provider but 4G/5G network coverage differs much more significantly. Below I show you the prices and the mobile internet network coverage maps in Malaysia, make a comparison of all the Malaysia sim cards and find you the best one.

Buying a sim card at kuala lumpur airport.

More time consuming but the easiest way to get connected when arriving in Malaysia is to buy a sim card at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Even before passport control you can already buy a Malaysia sim card from either the Hotlink Maxis, Tune Talk or Digi shop. It is impossible to miss when walking up to immigration on your right hand side. When you walk out into the arrivals hall you will immediately stumble upon the prepaid sim card shops on your left hand side: U Mobile, Maxis Hotlink and Tune Talk. On the right hand side there is Bluecube. All prepaid sim card shops at Kuala Lumpur Airport are open 24 hours, but mind you that not all shops take credit card. Tune Talk and Bluecube only accept cash!

You can not buy an e-sim card at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, only physical prepaid sim cards.

If you are curious what it is like to arrive and buy a prepaid sim card at Kuala Lumpur Airport then watch my YouTube vlog above with my experiences.

If you arrive on one of the other major international airports in Malaysia then there are also kiosks that sell prepaid sim cards for tourists at: Langkawi, Kuching, Penang and Kota Kinabalu.

Phone stores

You can of course also buy a sim card for Malaysia in any random phone store around the country. Traveltomtom advices to buy a sim card from an official retail store of one of the mobile internet providers. To find the nearest one to you simply use Google Maps.

In an official mobile internet operator retail store you will get the best service, prices and they make sure that everything works properly before you leave the store and you are connected to the internet.

Buying a local prepaid sim card on arrival in Malaysia is a little bit of a hassle after a long flight. If you buy a sim card for traveling in Malaysia on the internet you arrive prepared and as soon as the plane lands you are online.

If your phone is not e-sim compatible you can order a physical prepaid sim card for Malaysia via SimOptions . But if your phone is e-sim compatible then simply order an e-sim card for Malaysia on the internet.

For more detailed info about using e-sim cards when traveling to Malaysia check out Traveltomtom's complete guide with everything you need to know before buying an e-sim card for Malaysia in 2024 .

Registration process

When buying a prepaid sim card in Malaysia you need to bring your passport. In the shop they will take a copy and register your new prepaid sim card on your name. You will also need to give your fingerprint.

yes sim card malaysia

Yes was called Yes 4G, but with the new 5G era coming soon, it is simply Yes Malaysia now. Yes is a fairly new mobile internet provider and their network is much smaller than other providers. However, they offer 3 good prepaid sim card deals:

  • 10 GB data for 30 days = 15 RM - $3.6 USD

Best 4G/5G network in Malaysia

Sim card prices are important to determining the best Malaysia sim card, but so is the network coverage. Imagine traveling on long bus rides or staying in the beautiful Perhentian Islands and having no phone signal. Therefore I compared the Malaysia 4G/5G coverage maps  from all mobile internet providers in Malaysia for you.

Is there 5G in Malaysia?

Surprisingly 5G in Malaysia is not as developed as you had wished. Nearby countries Thailand and Singapore offer some of the best 5G coverage in the world, but Malaysia is far behind. As of April 2024 there are some tourist destinations in Malaysia with a 5G signal, but not everywhere and definitely not with every sim card.

Unifi 4G/5G coverage map

unifi 4g 5g network coverage map malaysia 2024

Yes 4G/5G coverage map

yes 4g 5g network coverage map malaysia 2024

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Malaysia in 2024.

Traveltomtom comes to the simple conclusion that Yes, Unifi and U Mobile have a lot to catch up when comparing their 4G/5G network strength with Maxis, DiGi and Celcom. Especially when you decide to travel to Borneo it is not recommended to buy a sim card from either Yes, Unifi or U Mobile as their 4G/5G network coverage in Borneo is very limited.

Overall Celcom has the strongest network coverage and therefore Celcom has the best 4G/5G network in Malaysia in 2024. When looking for the best sim card for traveling to Borneo you should either buy a Celcom or a Maxis/Hotlink prepaid sim card.

Best prepaid sim card in Malaysia in 2024

As you have seen prices for data sim cards in Malaysia are very affordable and for $10 USD you can already get unlimited data for the whole month. But be aware that you can buy data packages with different internet speed. Unlimited internet obviously sounds the best, but max data speed is 6 Mbps for example with Celcom, Maxis/Hotlink.

Personally, I would always choose that sim card that does not have a speed cap.

At first it seems like the Celcom, Maxis/Hotlink and the U Mobile prepaid sim cards are great deals with unlimited internet for around $10 - $12 USD but the max speed of 6 Mbps puts me a little off.

Therefore Traveltomtom rates Digi as the best prepaid sim card for tourists in Malaysia as they have no speed caps and truly high speed internet. They also have an amazing deal of 30 GB data for just $8 USD and the Digi 4G/5G network in Malaysia is very extensive.

Traveltomtom does not recommend a Unifi or Yes prepaid sim card for traveling in Malaysia because of their weaker mobile network.

Since prices for prepaid sim cards for tourists are so low there is no point in comparing e-sim cards for Malaysia with local prepaid sim cards.

The e-sim cards for Malaysia that you can order on the internet have the advantage that you can arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. Which means when the plane lands you are already online. No more visiting a sim card shop and installing a physical prepaid sim card.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Malaysia via either SimOptions or Airalo .

Best prepaid sim cards in malaysia.

malaysia sim card for traveller

U Mobile is one of the smaller local mobile network providers in Malaysia which means their connection speeds and coverage are not quite up to scratch compared to the others.

But, U Mobile does make up for this in a great way, by giving its users insane deals. With a U Mobile Malaysia sim card, you can get unlimited data with unlimited calls for 30 days for next to nothing, just $8.30 – how nuts is that!

You can also opt for the same but a 7-day package for just $2.8 or a 30-day package without unlimited calls for $7.1.

Overall, their coverage and connection speeds are barely noticeable so if you are looking for unlimited data for a bargain, U Mobile might just have the prepaid sim card for you.

  • Unlimited data, no topping up required
  • Super affordable
  • Short and longer-term options
  • Excellent deals pop up
  • Less coverage than other networks
  • Not as fast as other networks

Maxis is one of the largest mobile network providers in Malaysia and therefore their coverage and connection speeds are excellent.

Maxis has branded their prepaid sim cards as Hotlink sim cards, so when you want Maxis, go buy Hotlink.

Like U Mobile, you can also get unlimited data for next to nothing with Hotlink. They have 3 plans worth considering which include 10GB of data for 1 Year for $6 – this is pretty cool as you get to use your data at your own pace.

Or, you can opt for Unlimited data and calls for 30 days for either $9.5 or $12 – what’s the difference? Speed!

The $9.5 package is at 3 Mbps and the $12 package is at 6 Mbps, I would personally pay the $2.5 extra for double the speed.

  • Nice range or packages
  • Unlimited data available
  • Great coverage
  • A choice of connection speeds
  • None I can find
  • Price: $6, $9.5, $12
  • Data: 10GB, Unlimited
  • Calls: None, Unlimited
  • Valid For: 365/ 7/30 days

malaysia sim card for traveller

Digi is a part of the Telenor Group, a Norwegian telecom company, and is the second-largest network provider in Malaysia. I’m sure you can guess what this means, fast connections and great coverage all over the country.

Digi has a number of prepaid sim card packages for you to choose from and the sim card is free when you buy one. They all last for 30 days, are affordable, but sadly unlimited data is not an option.

The packages range in price from $3.6 which gives you 3GB of data plus Unlimited Social Media, to $9.5 which comes with 40GB of data and unlimited calls. All of the packages are great deals.

  • Very affordable
  • A good number of packages to choose from
  • A lot of data for not much cash
  • Reliable coverage and connection speeds
  • No unlimited data options
  • Price: $3.6/7.1/8.3/9.5
  • Data: 3/15/30/40GB
  • Calls: None/none/unlimited/unlimited
  • Valid For: 30-days

malaysia sim card for traveller

Celcom is the third largest network provider in Malaysia but they are actually one of the best for coverage and speeds. Cellcom actually won Malaysia Best Mobile Coverage Speedtest Award of 2021, so they are doing rather well, I do not know the figures for 2023 though.

The great thing about the Celcom prepaid sim is that no matter which package you buy, it comes with unlimited data.

There is no worry about holding back on using your phone and you can buy a package for 7 or 30 days, so there should be no need to top-up unless you are staying for longer than a month.

Something to bear in mind is that each package comes with a different connection speed, 3 or 6Mbps. The more expensive options are the faster speeds, and for a few dollars, it is worth having double the speed in my eyes.

You do have to buy a sim card with Celcom, they cost about $2.4 and come with 1GB of data, 10 GB Facebook, and some credit for calls and texts too. You can then add the package of your choice to this.

  • Unlimited data with every package
  • Choose from 7 or 30 days
  • Solid coverage and connection speeds
  • Local calls included
  • Speeds vary by price
  • Price: $2.8/3.6/8.3/10.7
  • Calls: Unlimited

malaysia sim card for traveller

YES built their 4G LTE network from the ground up and their sim cards pretty much only exclusively use their network, as they have not partnered with other mobile operators.

It is a 4G/LTE network only so you have to make sure your phone works with 4G, or it won’t work with Yes, thankfully most do.

YES’ coverage is pretty solid all over the country as are their connection speeds. They offer 3 packages that are worth considering with your prepaid sim card for Malaysia. Every package lasts 30 days and does not include any SMS or calls.

You can choose to grab 10GB of data for $3.6 and go all the way up to unlimited data for $7.1, both are great deals.

  • Good range of packages
  • A lot of data for not much money
  • Solid connection speeds
  • Countrywide coverage
  • No calls/texts included
  • Price: $3.6/4.7/7.1
  • Data: 10GB/20GB/Unlimited
  • Calls: None
  • Texts/SMS: None
  • Valid For: 30 days

malaysia sim card for traveller

Yoodo is a part of Celcom Malaysia, in fact, it is one of their sub-brands. Being a part of Celcom means it uses their network, one of the fastest and most reliable around.

Yoodo as a brand has a different approach to its packages compared to others. Yoodoo (You-Do) allows you to fully customize your prepaid package while you are in Malaysia, hence the name.

This means you can choose how much data you need as well as calls and SMS, and for the number of days you require it for too. It’s a pretty cool approach I think.

The only downside to Yoodo is that you can not access 5G with its sim cards, it will all be on 4G.

  • Good coverage
  • Fully customizable packages
  • Price: Custom
  • Data: Custom
  • Calls: Custom
  • Texts/SMS: Custom
  • Valid For: Custom
  • Service Speed: 4G

malaysia sim card for traveller

Tune Talk is actually a Mobile Virtual Network Operator of Celcom and is a brand of Air Asia. Their sim cards run on the Celom network (the best network) so a reliable connection and fast speeds are to be expected.

My favorite thing about Tune Talk is that you can buy the sim online and get it shipped to you so you can be connected when you land. You then have some very affordable plans to choose from that include 2GB for 7 days for $2.26 up to 8GB for 30 days for $10.86.

Sadly there are no unlimited data options.

  • Will ship your sim to you for $3
  • Be connected as soon as you land
  • Solid coverage and fast speeds
  • No unlimited data
  • Price: $2.26/6.34/10.86
  • Data: 2/4/8GB
  • Valid For: 7/30/30 days

Is A Sim Card Essential When Traveling to Malaysia?

If a sim card ensures you stay connected while traveling around Malaysia then I would say it is essential yes. Traveling without my phone being connected would be a little bit of a nightmare as I depend on it for so much, as I am sure you do too.

Everything from listening to music to watching films, finding my way around a new city or country with Google Maps, checking my reservations, and making new ones, all happens from my phone.

You can try to just use free WiFi but this is not so easy in Malaysia once you leave the cities. Accessing free WiFi is only possible in some parts of the country and there is no guarantee you will find WiFi when you need it.

Having a working phone in my pocket also adds a massive element of safety to my mind. If I am in trouble, I can get help quickly. I can also make sure my loved ones do not worry about me either.

Considering that you can get unlimited data for a month for less than $10, no matter how small your budget is, you can afford to stay connected using a prepaid sim as you travel around Malaysia.

Things to Know Before Buying A Sim Card in Malaysia

Is your phone unlocked.

For phones to work with sim cards in Malaysia and in other countries, they must be unlocked by a provider.

Most phones are unlocked these days and thus you should be able to use a Malaysia sim card without any issues, but it is worth checking before you fly.

If you got your phone for free as part of a mobile contract and live in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States, your phone might be locked to your mobile provider at home.

To unlock it simply call your provider and ask them to unlock it, the process should only take a few minutes.

Are You Using A GSM Phone?

I never knew but there are actually two types of mobile networks, GSM and CDMA, and two types of sim cards and mobile phones to match them.

GSM phones only work with GSM sims and GSM networks, the same goes for CDMA. Most networks, sims, and phones are GSM, Malaysia included.

If you have a CDMA phone, it will not work in Malaysia. But how would you know? The only place in the world still using CDMA is North America and the only providers using it are Sprint and Verizon.

If you have a contract with Verizon or Sprint, you might have a CDMA phone. If this is the case, you will need to buy an unlocked GSM phone to use a Malaysian sim.

How to Buy A Sim Card in Malaysia

Buying a sim card before traveling to malaysia.

Tune Talk is one of the only local Malaysian sim card providers I know of that will actually ship you a sim card so you can have it before you land.

Shipping is just $3 to anywhere in the world, and it means you can have your sim ready to go when you land in Malaysia.

Other options are to buy either an eSim for Malaysia  or an international prepaid sim card, both of which are more expensive than prepaid sims in Malaysia.

Having a sim before you travel will help you avoid having to go through the process of finding a shop and buying a sim on the ground.

Buying A Sim Card in Malaysia

Buying a sim card in Malaysia is very easy. You can find shops at the airport selling sim cards as well as buy them at mobile stores, 7-Elevens, and lots of other places too.

How Much Does A Sim Card in Malaysia Cost?

The cost of a sim card in Malaysia is entirely dependent on the provider you are buying it from. Some provide the sim card for free when you buy a data package, others charge between $2 and $4 for a sim.

Those that do charge usually give you some data and calling credit with a sim card, but not all of them.

How to Activate & Top Up Your Malaysian Sim Card

When you buy your sim card you will have to give your passport and fingerprint to register it. This is also where you will buy your data/calling package. Ask the person in the shop to activate it and add your package.

Put your sim card in the phone and check it works before leaving the store. If you have any issues, simply as the store clerk to help you out.

Managing Your Mobile Data in Malaysia

Considering you can get unlimited data for less than $10, there is not much need to manage your data usage in Malaysia. But, here are some tips in case you do.

  • Keep your phone in airplane mode until you need to use it
  • Download the area you are visiting on Google Maps for offline navigation

Visiting Malaysia soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a Malaysia SIM card .

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Malaysia in person and online.

We’ll also discuss prepaid Malaysia SIM cards for tourists and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Malaysia.

If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate Malay – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Malaysia .

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Best Malaysia SIM Cards

If you’re traveling in Malaysia, we recommend using a SIM card from Celcom, Digi, Maxis, or Airalo.

I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Asia , you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other Asian countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Malaysia

You can either buy a Malaysia prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival.

So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase an Asia prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Celcom, Digi, and Maxis,

Mosque, Malaysia

Celcom SIM Cards

Celcom is one of the best SIM cards in Malaysia.

It offers several different types of prepaid plans:

  • 30 GB, 30 days for RM 35 ($7.40)
  • 40 GB, 30 days for RM 45 ($9.52)
  • Unlimited data, 30 days for RM 45 (includes free calls to all networks in Malaysia) ($9.52)
  • Unlimited data, 30 days for RM 43 ($9.09)

Digi SIM Cards

Digi has six different prepaid plans available:

  • 6 GB, 30 days for RM 15 ($3.17)
  • 15 GB, 30 days for RM 20 ($4.32)
  • 20 GB, 30 days for RM 30 ($6.34)
  • 50 GB, 30 days for RM 68 ($14.38)
  • Unlimited data, 30 days for RM 40 ($8.64)

As you can see, it is similarly priced to Celcom.

Maxis SIM Cards

Maxis offers four main SIM-only plans for customers:

  • Unlimited data, 30 days for RM 35 ($7.40)
  • Unlimited data (high speed), 30 days for RM 45 ($9.52)
  • Unlimited data, 7 days for RM 12 ($2.54)
  • Unlimited data, 1 day for RM 3 ($0.63)

Overall, Digi is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person.

That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s definitely one of the best options to get data in Malaysia.

Final Thoughts On SIM Cards In Malaysia

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Malaysia or even an eSIM for your travels in Malaysia is pretty straightforward.

You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in Asia without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase an Asia plan.

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Malaysia if you wish to have data upon your arrival.

This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card.

Obviously, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Asia is a region full of history, culture and most importantly kind, friendly people. With 60% of the world’s population living in this region alone, you’ll be sure to make a few friends during your travels. From the futuristic vibe of Tokyo, Japan to the stunning tropical islands of Indonesia, Asia is a place full of secrets to discover and experiences to be had. With US residents being one of the regions most-dedicated visitors, many places are increasingly accommodating English-speaking tourists. With there never being a better time to visit Asia, you’ll want to buy a SIM card that’ll let you keep in touch with friends and family while you’re away.

SimCorner offer individual Travel SIMs for all major countries in Asia, such as the Japan Travel SIM and India Travel SIM card to name some of our most popular. if you’re planning a visit to the region check out more of our country specific SIMs below.

In addition, we currently have two Multi Country SIMs on offer: 10 days and 15 days. If you’re only planning to spend a week travelling across Asia, the 10 day Asia SIM Card will be the perfect option. For example, in Hong Kong your SIM card will act as a Hong Kong Travel SIM, letting you use your 6GB of data to send pictures to friends while you explore. If you decide to carry on to China or Indonesia your SIM will work as a Indonesia prepaid SIM card or a China prepaid SIM until your plan runs out.

If you plan on extending your trip to two weeks, we’ve also got you covered. Our 15 day Asia SIM Card is great for trips to multiple countries in Asia, from South Korea and Japan to Vietnam and Sri Lanka. If you’re planning to spend a few days travelling from Delhi to the Taj Mahal, our SIM Card will be perfect as a travel SIM card for India. If you head on to China for another week of well-deserved holiday, the SIM will automatically become a China prepaid SIM. You can rest easy in the knowledge that you won’t have to face expensive roaming charges as you explore the bustling streets of Shanghai or Beijing’s Forbidden City.

What's The Best eSIM For Malaysia? We've Ranked the Top Providers in 2024

Known for its bustling urban life and the Batu Caves, Malaysia isn't popular with tourists without reason. If you're planning to visit the country soon, it should come as no surprise that you won't be able to call, SMS, or access the web on the go with your smartphone as you usually would at home, and if you do manage to get connected via roaming, it can result in hefty additional charges.

However, none of this means you should leave your smartphone at home. If your device is a newish model (i.e., from 2019 or later), there's a good chance it'll support an eSIM. These nifty digital SIM cards can be downloaded and installed before you travel, promising blazing-fast internet in Malaysia at a very low cost compared to roaming and great convenience compared to physical SIMs. In this guide, we explore everything you have to know about eSIMs in Malaysia and what the best deals might be for you.

Dodge sky-high roaming costs, unexpected data charges, or spotty service on your trip to Malaysia by using an eSIM from Airalo to connect directly to local network providers like Digi and Maxis.

✨ If you're a new customer, use code MONITO15 to get 15% off your first Airalo eSIM, and if you're a returning customer, use MONITO10 to get 10% off today! Go to Airalo now to get started.

As we'll explore in more depth in this guide, when choosing an eSIM, you have two options. The first option is for you to go through a digital eSIM provider, and the second option is to purchase an eSIM directly from your network provider or carrier. We strongly recommend the first option. After all, with reputable online providers, you can always be sure you'll get good support, excellent rates, and quality instructions that normally exceed those of the big carriers.

According to our review and comparison of the best options on the market, here are the three best eSIM providers for Malaysia and other countries worldwide:

Best Overall: Airalo

Airalo  is an excellent eSIM provider for Malaysia . Its online platform offers global access to eSIMs through collaboration with big local telecom providers. In Malaysia, for example, Airalo works directly with Digi and Maxis to provide you with high-speed coverage directly from their networks, wherever you are in the country.

Once-off prices for eSIMs for Malaysia range from $4.50 to $40 and include between 1 GB and 20 GB of data. Most travellers should be able to get by with these amounts without any problems. Setting up and activating your eSIM happens entirely on your smartphone and it's very quick – in our test, it took us just two minutes (watch our how-to video on YouTube to see how it's done). What's more, if you start running low on data during your trip, you can easily top this up via the Airalo app. This lets you save time and hassle compared to buying a physical SIM, where you'd usually need to stand in line at the counter to buy or top up your card or package.

We recommend Airalo in general, especially if you travel often. The service provides an excellent connectivity companion while you're abroad. To find out more about this excellent eSIM provider, take a look at our in-depth Airalo review .

Considering Airalo? Take advantage of the following special offers until the 31st of December 2024:

  • New customer? Use the code   MONITO15   to claim a 15% discount on all Airalo eSIMs.  Ts & Cs  apply.
  • Returning customer? Use the code  MONITO10  to claim a 10% discount on all Airalo eSIMs.

Best For Unlimited Data: Holafly

Holafly  is another trusted eSIM service which only provides packages with unlimited data to dozens of countries worldwide. Although these packages cost quite a bit more than the smaller Airalo packages, in return, they offer the certainty that you'll never use up all your data.

For trips to Malaysia, Holafly's data packages cost between $19 and $99 once off and are valid from five to 90 days. Like Airalo, Holafly also works with domestic carriers, so you'll get coverage like a local no matter where you travel in the country (although in remote regions, coverage can become spotty).

Although Holafly offers unlimited data in most countries, including Malaysia, if you're a globetrotter, it's worth keeping in mind that Holafly offers limited data plans to some other destinations. Be sure to check their website or app before traveling to a new country to confirm whether Holafly's unlimited packages apply.

Although Holafly's packages are generally great if you'd like uncapped access to the web, it's worth remembering that most travellers don't usually need such a large sum of data and that normally, 5 GB to 10 GB, at most, should be enough for everyday travel needs in Malaysia like navigating, browsing, and using social media. Moreover, your speeds might be temporarily throttled if you use a very extensive amount of data (e.g., for non-stop HD streaming or downloading large files). During our test in the UK, this happened to us at around 4.5 GB of usage. Sadly, Holafly's fair use policies don't clearly outline when networks throttle speeds since it comes down to the individual network or carrier and the country you're browsing in.

If you're curious, we tested Holafly extensively to see if its data plans really live up to their 'unlimited' promise. The short answer? Yes, but there are a few things you should know. Take a look at our Holafly review to find out what they are.

Considering Holafly? Use the code  MONITO  at checkout to claim a 5% discount on all Holafly eSIMs. Go to Holafly now to get started! ✨

Another Reliable Alternative: Yesim

malaysia sim card for traveller

A smaller and newer company than Airalo and Holafly, Yesim  is a Swiss-based eSIM provider offering highly-rated eSIMs for countries around the globe. Their website and app are simple, straightforward, and easy to use, and over 300,000 customers have chosen their eSIMs so far.

Like its larger competitors, Yesim gives you a SIM card connecting to local carriers while you're abroad. It can be installed quickly and effortlessly right from the app or via a QR code sent to your email after purchase. Interestingly, alongside its eSIM service, Yesim also offers a virtual number service that allows you to get an online-only US (+1), Canadian (+1), or Israeli (+972) mobile phone number to use for apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, OpenAI, Binance, Tinder, or TikTok. These virtual numbers can be used for a flat fee of $2.75 per month.

Going back to eSIMs, Yesim's packages typically cost between $7 and $28 for 3 GB to 20 GB, but only the 10 GB and 20 GB data plans last longer than 30 days (some plans up to 60 days are possible to purchase). In our opinion, this makes Yesim's offers slightly less attractive than Airalo's for travel in general.

However, it's worth remembering that Yesim's prices are often fractionally lower per gigabyte, so if you're looking for the best deal, make sure you visit Yesim's website and compare their prices to Airalo's,

How Do They Compare?

In the chart below, we've compared Airalo, Holafly, and Yesim based on a few factors you might find important on your trip to Malaysia or anywhere else in the world. As you'll see, the three are very competitive, with differences normally being slight. If you'd like to compare Holafly and Airalo directly, take a look at our side-by-side review of the two too.

Correct as of 8 March, 2024

Do I Need a SIM Card in Malaysia?

No, you don't need a SIM card as a tourist in Malaysia, but having one will enable you to make phone calls and SMSes and not to rely solely on public or hotel WiFi to access the web.

A good place to start would be to review your contract from your mobile network provider before you travel to Malaysia. Most contracts are limited to use just within your home country (or within the European Union if you live in an EU country). For all other countries, so-called 'roaming charges' typically apply. However, there is one exception: specific contracts sometimes allow you to use your data worldwide. If you have a global internet contract, you can also use it in Malaysia without unexpected roaming charges.

Otherwise, although precise roaming charges differ according to your network provider, the fees for using mobile internet in Malaysia are typically around $2 or $3 per 6 MB (six megabytes) of data used, though they could be higher still. For example, if you wanted to download an average-sized app from the Google Play Store onto your Android smartphone, you'd use around 24 MB and pay $8 to $10 in roaming charges. It should, therefore, be clear that roaming with your regular SIM card in Malaysia is generally not worthwhile and can lead to enormous costs. As we'll see in a moment, it's significantly cheaper to purchase a local Malaysian SIM card once you arrive or, better yet, an eSIM before you travel.

💳 Planning to use your credit or debit card on your Malaysian trip? You'll probably pay much more than you think in hidden exchange rate fees every time you tap your card or withdraw cash. Get a free global account and debit card with Revolut to avoid these fees and save money. Check out our ranking of the best prepaid travel debit cards to find out more about how you can save.

What Are eSIMs, Anyway?

Simply put, eSIMs are regular SIM cards that don't require inserting an actual microchip into your device while providing the same benefits. Newer smartphones (but also smartwatches, tablets, and other devices) can be equipped with eSIMs, and since you don't need an actual SIM card to install an eSIM, you can also get one before your trip to Malaysia. To do this, all you have to do is visit an online eSIM service, purchase the eSIM you want, and follow the instructions to download and install it onto your device.

Like regular SIM cards, prepaid eSIMs come bundled with a certain fixed amount of data, SMSes, or telephone minutes, which you can use at your leisure while travelling. You get to choose the package you want, and you can generally also extend your eSIM's validity easily right from an app.

Pros of Using an eSIM

In general, eSIMs have numerous advantages and are often a better alternative to using a regular SIM card for most tourists. In our opinion, the most significant advantages include:

  • internet immediately upon arrival in Malaysia,
  • no negotiating with SIM card sellers at the airport,
  • transparent and fair pricing,
  • online extension is often possible,
  • credit card payment is possible,
  • local telecom provider networks are used.

In our opinion, there are only a few reasons against using an eSIM when travelling to Malaysia (which we'll discuss below), and in most instances, we're sure that it's a far better deal than using your normal SIM card from your home country on Malaysian networks.

Cons of Using an eSIM

As we've already seen, eSIMs have very few drawbacks and are an excellent option for accessing mobile internet on your Malaysian vacation.

However, one disadvantage is the slightly higher upfront cost than physical SIM cards. That said, eSIMs are still comparatively cheap, especially for use in Malaysia from abroad. In our opinion, the significantly higher level of comfort and the possibility of having access to the internet immediately upon arrival are worth the extra pennies. Another disadvantage is related to installation, where the process may be unfamiliar to you if you've never installed an eSIM before. However, if you follow the instructions carefully, you'll be fine.

Finally, there's the issue of compatibility: not all devices support eSIMs . If your device was released before late 2019, we recommend double-checking on the internet or contacting a representative from an eSIM service to confirm whether your device is compatible before you purchase an eSIM. In general, the following devices will support eSIMs though:

  • iPhone 11 or later
  • iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or iPhone SE
  • iPad 7th generation or later ,
  • Galaxy S20 or later
  • Google Pixel 3 or later
  • and many other devices (see our full list of compatible devices )

Can I Call From Malaysia With an eSIM?

Yes, you can call abroad from Malaysia with an eSIM , but once again, using your regular network provider and SIM card could result in surprisingly high calling charges at the end of the month (we've personally encountered as high as $4 per minute!). Fortunately, you can call abroad without the high costs, and there are three ways of doing this. We go through each below:

1. Voice-Over-IP (VoIP) With Data

In most cases, eSIM packages are loaded with mobile data, not with minutes or airtime. However, using your data, you can use web-based apps like WhatsApp, Google Meet, Skype, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, FaceTime and others to stay in touch with family and friends abroad while in Malaysia.

2. eSIMs With Airtime

Some eSIM services offer talk and text packages alongside normal data packages. These allow you to make direct phone calls or SMSes via local networks in Malaysia to your home country for only a slightly higher fee than regular data packages. Not all eSIM services offer this service though, but some, like Wraptel , do.

3. International Calling Apps

If you plan to make calls from Malaysia (or anywhere else abroad) fairly regularly, then your most reliable and affordable option will be to use a third-party app. In our opinion, Rebtel is by far the best service out there , offering low rates and providing you with local Malaysian phone numbers with which you can make calls abroad as though they were completely domestic.

Although it's popular, we typically don't recommend using Google Fi for this purpose unless you plan to go back and forth from the United States regularly (since Google Fi is only available to Americans and will not work if you spend over 90 days abroad per year). In general, Rebtel's rates are more affordable than Google Fi's too. To learn more about our first-hand experience with Google Fi, look at our in-depth review .

Recap: All About eSIMs in Malaysia

Are you planning a trip in Malaysia, and do you have a modern smartphone? Then, you should certainly at least consider getting an eSIM. In our opinion, they offer almost nothing but advantages and are generally far superior to using your regular SIM card.

To find the right provider for eSIMs in Malaysia, you should compare the available options. As we've seen, we recommend looking primarily at the network provider and the price. Depending on how long you want to stay in Malaysia, Airalo, Holafly or possibly Yesim are the best choices. To recap, here are what each can offer you:

  • Airalo : Best eSIM for Malaysia overall.
  • Holafly : Best eSIM for unlimited data.
  • Yesim : Good alternative to Airalo.
  • Wraptel : Best eSIM for airtime and SMSes.
  • Rebtel : Best calling service for international calls.

FAQ About The Best eSIM For Malaysia

Yes, eSIMs are safe to use in Malaysia. That's because commercial eSIM technology adheres to international security and encryption standards to store and securely access your mobile network information.

Generally, yes, but it depends on your individual needs. While eSIMs offer the advantage of remotely purchasing a SIM before you travel, making them convenient for frequent travellers, physical SIMs might still be preferable for you if you have an older smartphone model, for example.

No, eSIMs generally aren't free, with the cost in Malaysia varying based on mobile service providers and their pricing plans. However, you can generally expect to pay upwards of $4.50 to purchase an eSIM with a minimal data package for Malaysia.

Yes, you can use an eSIM on a locked phone, provided your phone is compatible with eSIM technology.

Yes, an eSIM can generally be used for calling from Malaysia, especially when paired with voice-over-IP services that connect to the internet, like WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Google Messenger. If you'd like to call or SMS, consider finding an eSIM deal that includes airtime or minutes or use a service like Rebtel , which, for a tiny fee, provides you with a local number in place of your overseas contact's foreign number, making calling abroad significantly cheaper.

The Holafly eSIM plans offers maximum speed coverage (4GLTE). But bear in mind that in some areas of limited coverage there may be reduced speeds in connection.

Do I have to activate data roaming on my device?

Yes. To ensure that your eSIM gets the best coverage, you must turn on data roaming on your mobile settings. This will not incur any additional charges, as long as you have already set up the Holafly eSIM.

What do I do if I delete or lose my eSIM’s QR code?

If you cannot find the code, please contact our 24/7 customer support team at [email protected] or our online chat for further assistance. We will resend the code to your email.

Could the internet speed with my Holafly eSIM be reduced?

In a rare scenario, yes. Operators enforce an international measure called Fair Usage Policy to ensure fair internet usage and allow all users to enjoy optimal connection. This measure might be applied for a period of no more than one (1) day. It’s beyond Holafly’s control, but don’t worry! If this measure affects you, the restriction will be lifted the next day, and you’ll have your original plan speed back.

It is! Of course if you ask us which eSIM card is the best, we will naturally answer it’s ours! Why? Because of our unlimited data, the flexibility to select a custom number of days, and many more special features.

How do I set up the eSIM on my device?

After your eSIM purchase, we will send a QR code to your email. Either print the QR code or open it on your computer. On your cell phone, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add Data Plan and scan the QR code. Your phone will allow you to assign a specific name to this data plan. You will now be able to switch between your Holafly data plan and the original plan from your provider. The Holafly data plan will only be operational once you arrive at your destination. Once you land, turn on data roaming on your cell phone settings and activate the Holafly data plan. Consult your phone’s user manual for more details on adding a data plan. All eSIM products come with comprehensive set-up instructions.

Should I install my eSIM before travelling?

Set up your eSIM before your departure. Once you reach your destination, just activate the data plan and turn on data roaming. We recommend you print the QR code and take it with you on your vacation just in case. Remember that you need internet access to activate the eSIM. Set up is quick and you will be able to enjoy your data plan right away.

How can I check my data balance?

You can manage your eSIM plan details and access all purchased data plans by logging into your Holafly Center through the Holafly website.

How many times can I use my eSIM card?

If needed or when changing phones during your trip, you can transfer your eSIM. However, note that you can only transfer the eSIM to two devices—the original one and a new one. Once you’ve installed it on a different device than the original, you won’t be able to reinstall it on the original device and you must deliver the eSIM from the original device to install it in the second device.

Can I delete the Holafly eSIM once I’ve used my data?

Yes! But keep in mind that you don’t need to do so. As soon as your plan expires your eSIM will no longer work.

Can I use my physical SIM card and Holafly eSIM at the same time?

If you are using an Apple device, you can use your SIM card and your eSIM at the same time. Choose the SIM card for phone calls and SMS, and Holafly eSIM for data from your device. Please remember that if you leave your SIM card activated, your cellular network provider may apply data roaming charges to receive or make phone calls as well as SMS.
