Headed for a cruise in Galveston and need a hotel with a shuttle to the port?

Staying on the island before or after your cruise is highly recommended. Galveston is one of the most historic cities in Texas, and as a tourist destination, there are tons of things for you to do. Add that to the miles of Gulf Coast beaches and Galveston should be a port of call itself — not just a place to board your cruise ship.

Of course, if you’re staying at a local hotel, then you still have to get to the cruise port.

Luckily, Galveston is a fairly compact. Any hotel on the island will only be a $10-15 Uber/Lyft ride to the cruise terminal . Still, it’s much more convenient if you don’t have to worry about a ride at all and simply have transportation provided for you. 

That’s why we called and spoke to dozens of hotels on the island to see if they offer a shuttle to the cruise port. Many hotels do, making it easy to get to the ship on cruise day.

The hotels listed below told us they offer a shuttle to the port or have one listed on their website . We suggest calling ahead to confirm, as policies can change.

Galveston Hotels with Shuttles to the Cruise Port

Hilton Galveston Island Resort Address: 5400 Seawall Boulevard | Phone: 409-744-5000 | Shuttle with Package Staying at the Hilton? You’ll have a great location with the beach just steps away from your room, but you’ll also have access to a shuttle to the port. Booking the parking package through the hotel means you get parking and transportation included in your fare. The hotel is also close to a grocery store if you need to make a stop before heading to the ship.

The Tremont House Address: 2300 Ship’s Mechanic Row | Phone: 409-763-0300 |  Paid Shuttle If you want to stay in the historic Strand district, then The Tremont House is your best option. It’s right near the Carnival port so you actually don’t even need to use a shuttle. Most people can just walk the three blocks to the port. If sailing Royal Caribbean, it’s about a mile. However, they do offer a shuttle that costs $15 per person for a round trip.

The San Luis Resort Address: 5222 Seawall Blvd | Phone: 409-744-1500 | Paid Shuttle The San Luis sits right on the Seawall. However, what makes it special is that it’s a resort more than just a hotel. With a resort style pool, restaurant, and spa, you can have a complete vacation without leaving the building. A call to the hotel told us that there is a shuttle to the port for guests for $10 per person. They also offer parking for $50 up to 14 days, savings you considerably over parking at the port.

Avenue O Bed & Breakfast Address: 2323 Avenue O | Phone: 409-789-3070 | Free Shuttle Given the historic nature of the island, there are a handful of bed and breakfast options if you want something more unique than a traditional hotel. This spot is among the highest-rated on the island, located in a restored 1924 historical home. The website says they offer free cruise parking (up to 7 days), breakfast, and a transfer to the terminal when you book directly through the hotel .

Holiday Inn Resort Galveston On the Beach Address: 5002 Seawall Boulevard | Phone: 409-740-5300 |  Shuttle with Package The Holiday Inn Resort is right in the heart of the the island’s Seawall, looking out over the Gulf. They offer a “Park, Stay & Go” cruise package that includes parking, along with a round trip shuttle the cruise ship. That means you can drive down and have parking and your ride to/from the cruise terminal all taken care of.

• Distance to Port: 3.5 miles

Comfort Suites Galveston Address: 3606 89th Street | Phone: 409-741-9977 | Paid Shuttle Situated on Galveston’s west end, this hotel is close to the water, as well as attractions like Magic Carpet Putt-Putt, batting cages, a movie theater, and the Galveston fishing pier. Rides are a little pricey at $25 round trip per person, but will get you there on cruise day. They also offer free parking if you stay before the cruise if you take the shuttle.

Country Inn & Suites Galveston Address: 2818 Avenue R 1/2 | Phone: 409-763-5000 | Paid Shuttle Located close to the Pleasure Pier in Galveston, the Country Inn is a relatively new hotel on the island. When we called, the hotel told us they offered a $50 parking package for the first five days. A 7-day cruise cost $70. As well, they offer a ride to the port for $10 per person.

Hi there can you tell us which hotels have shuttles to the cruise port in Galveston free or not???

According to the holiday inn website, they no longer offer the shuttle or parking option

Yes I need to find an accessible way to Galveston from the airport (Hobby) I am in a power wheelchair not easily broken down so will need lift or ramp into the vehicle.

In that case, we’d suggest calling a taxi company. They typically have cars like this on staff.

So there’s no fly snooze cruise packages like port Canaveral has with go port. Really would like to cruise Galveston but it looks to be pia to get to. Especially as a solo cruiser.

No, not that we know of. The best bet is to take Uber or an independent shuttle from the airport. Places like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, even New Orleans have less of an issue with distance if flying in.

I am desperately trying to find a ride sharing company with accessible transportation from Hobby to Galveston for a cruise on Carnival. I will be arriving the day before the cruise and staying in a hotel. I know I can take an accessible taxicab to the terminal from the hotel….but my problem is getting from Hobby to the hotel. I will also need to have an accessible transportation after the cruise. HELP! Thanks in advance! A disabled Army Veteran

How accessible do you need? For instance, do you simply need a place to put a wheelchair or do you need to have lifts, ramps, or something similar? If you can transfer yourself, then Lyft or Uber should be fine. The driver will just need to break down a wheelchair. If you need something more accessible, we’d suggest calling a local taxi company and seeing if they offer a vehicle that can accommodate you.

Galveston is the perfect place for a few days vacation before or after your cruise.

Rather than parking at the port we recommend you stay at a local hotel and take a stress-free transfer to the port. Many hotels offer cheap deals . This way you can relax before and after your cruise as well as enjoying the historic attractions and beaches of Galveston.

Galveston covers a compact area and a shuttle or taxi cab fare to the port should never cost more than $10 – $15 dollars per person.

Several hotels, however, offer their own shuttle service to the port . Very often, this is complimentary especially if you choose to park at the hotel. Other times it should cost no more than a few dollars.

The Harbor House Pier 21 is located on the waterside, close to the Port of Galveston adjacent to the Historic Strand district. Most bedrooms offer stunning harbor views while the Strand Historic District is just a short walk away. The hotel provides a continental breakfast and guests can use the swimming, spa, and dining facilities at its nearby sister hotel, the Hotel Galvez.

As the Harbor House Pier 21 is located only 0.5 miles from the port’s entry you can easily walk from the hotel to the cruise terminal. If you choose to leave your car at the Harbor House while on cruise, the cost is $15/night. A shuttle to the Cruise terminal is available upon request.

2. The George Manor ★★★★ (Bed & Breakfast)

This historic house from the 19th century is ideal located in the center of the Galveston’s historic district, close to The Strand with its restaurants, bars and antique stores. Guests staying at this bed and breakfast enjoy transportation to and from the cruise terminal ($25 for 2 and $12.50 per extra person). Walking distance to either cruise ship terminal 1 or 2 is approx. 20 minutes. The George Manor also provides transportation to and from both Houston Airports. 

For those willing to leave their vehicle while on cruise vacation the property offers safe secure long-term parking for $150 per week which includes a private shuttle (Black Suburban) to and from the Port.

3. The Tremont House, Galveston, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel ★★★★ (Walking Distance)

The Tremont House Hotel is just a pleasant stroll away from the Strand Historic District and Galveston Beach. Guests can enjoy dining and cocktails in the rooftop restaurant of the Tremont House as well as using the swimming pool and spa of the nearby Hotel Galvez.

Tremont House has cruise parking available at a reasonable cost which includes one night of hotel valet and up to 1 week of cruise parking but only when the Park & Sail package is booked. There is a shuttle service to the port but only for guests who booked this package. The property is only 5 minutes’ walk from the Galveston Cruise Terminal ( Carnival ). Royal Caribbean ‘s new cruise terminal is a bit further away, 25 minutes walk. The best way to get there is by taxi or Uber/Lyft.

The Hilton Galveston Island Resort is just a few steps from the beach, making it the ideal place for adding a few extra days to your cruise vacation. There are a swim-up bar and grill at the center of the hotel’s outdoor heated swimming pool.

The Hilton Galveston Island Resort offers cruise parking and a transfer to port for a fee . There’s also a free shuttle service* to and from the port, but only if you book the park and go package. Parking for extra nights is charged for. It is best to book your transportation when you reserve your hotel room.

The Avenue O Bed and Breakfast is located in the historic Silk Stocking District, approx. 10 minutes walk from Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier and 1.2 miles from cruise terminal 1 and 2. Royal Caribbean’s International cruise terminal is about 1.7 miles from the property. A trolley that goes down 25th Street (a block down) will take you to the beach, Moody Gardens, or the downtown area.

Guests staying here can enjoy a complimentary port transfer and parking for cruisers (free cruise parking only if you book directly with hotel). Plus, free breakfast. A minimum two-night stay is required for parking longer than 7 days and on weekends.

The popular Best Western Plus Seawall Inn & Suites is well located on Seawall Boulevard 5 to 10 minutes walk from Stewart beach. Enjoy wonderful views of the Gulf of Mexico from this seaside property. Amenities include a very nice outdoor pool. If you’re leaving on a cruise from Galveston, the port is a short drive away (2 miles or 6-8 minutes).

You can park for free while staying and when enjoying your cruise.

2. Inn at the Waterpark ★★★ (Free Cruise Parking)

It is close to Galveston cruise port, which gives it an additional plus. Unfortunately they discontinued free cruise parking at the beginning of 2022.

In the pleasant breakfast room you’ll find a cheerful decor while outside there’s a picnic area and pool. There’s parking during your cruise which costs $10.00/day, but you’ll have to take a cab or Uber to the cruise port.

10. Howard Johnson by Wyndham Galveston ★★

Like many Galveston properties, this attractive budget hotel is two storys high with covered, wrought iron balconies. There’s a relaxed atmosphere in the compact, simply furnished rooms, while the communal lounges and dining areas are spacious and informal with comfortable seating.

Outside, you’ll find wooden benches and barbecue facilities on the terrace. You can park for free while taking your cruise (based on availability) and their is a shuttle service directly across the street. The port is four miles away.

11. Super 8 by Wyndham Galveston ★★

This charming inexpensive two-story hotel features balconies and an arched porch. You’ll find the comfortable guest rooms have a stylish, modern decor with bright colors and minimalist furnishings. The breakfast room has plenty of seating and there’s space to relax outdoors in the garden area alongside the pool.

The cruise port is five miles away and although there isn’t a shuttle service. As of March 2022, the property no longer offers free parking for cruises.

12. Grand Galvez ★★★★

The Hotel Galvez is housed in one of the island’s grandest most historic houses and is a pleasing blend of old-world elegance and modern amenities. Guests can dive into a saline pool with a swim-up bar, and a spa as well as a restaurant well known for its delicious seafood menu.

The hotel offers cruise parking at a reasonable cost. There is a complimentary shuttle service to the cruise port for all guests, whether they are using the parking facilities or not. Shuttle reservations should be made at the valet staff when checking in to the hotel.

Where to fly on a budget this summer

Airfare experts share their forecasts for summer vacation destinations that won’t break your budget.

This summer is shaping up to be another scorcher , and the demand for summer travel is piping hot, too. If early 2024 trends are any indication of what’s to come, “it’s looking to be busier than 2023,” said Katy Nastro, spokesperson for the flight booking site Going . Recent airport passenger volume numbers have regularly exceeded last year and pre-pandemic levels.

Jeff Klee, CEO of CheapAir.com , says airline capacity has rebounded from pandemic complications, but strong travel demand means summer flight prices can be high, depending on when you’re hoping to go. Flying in June, July or early August will be more expensive than later in the season, according to the company’s summer forecast .

“And it’s not just the airfare,” Klee said in an email. “Expensive hotel rates and crowds everywhere make Western Europe tricky for the summer.”

Despite the price tag, “people are going to go,” said Melanie Fish, the head of global public relations for all Expedia Brands, including Vrbo, Expedia and Hotels.com . “When we look at searches for destinations, they are definitely up year over year.”

For popular destinations like Europe , Klee and Fish say to push trips later into August, September or even October. Not only will prices soften, but you’ll alleviate some of the strain of overtourism .

“My number one tip is go ahead and take that summer vacation, but maybe hold on to take that big, big trip in September,” Fish said.

According to Expedia’s summer 2024 travel outlook , we’re currently in the sweet spot for shopping for early summer flights at the best rates, as Fish says lower fares tend to pop up 21 to 60 days out. It doesn’t hurt to start your search even earlier, setting up price alerts to flag when airfare drops. If you can swing it, look to fly on a Monday for international trips or a Tuesday for domestic trips to save up to 15 percent on fares, Fish added.

It’s not impossible to find good deals on airfare, whether you’re looking for a tropical beach trip , a mountain adventure or a vibrant city. Here are places that are trending cheaper — and the destinations you’ll want to avoid.

Go to Mexico

Sun, surf, culture, chilaquiles — Mexico is always a good idea , but particularly so this summer. With the opening of the new airport in Tulum , U.S. airlines have been adding gobs of new flights to Mexico, particularly to beach regions. “We’ve seen a healthy amount of deals down to Mexico resort areas like Cancún,” Nastro said.

Laura Lindsay, global travel trends expert at Skyscanner , says three Mexican cities — Cancún, San José del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta — are among the top 10 destinations offering travelers the best bang for their buck in 2024.

To escape the summer heat, Phyllis Stoller, president of the Women’s Travel Group , recommends high-altitude destinations like Mexico City or Ixtapan de la Sal, a town near Mexico City with thermal springs.

Avoid European port cities

If you’re considering a visit to a popular European city that’s also a cruise hub, beware. Not only will you be battling the usual summer crowds, you’ll be joined by thousands of day-trippers flooding into the ports — meaning Barcelona, Venice , Athens and Santorini.

Sandra Weinacht, who co-owns the tour company Inside Europe Travel Experiences , says you can avoid some of the madness in these hot spots by staying in neighborhoods away from the typical tourist zones. You can also visit top sites in the late afternoon or evening, after cruise travelers have returned to their ships.

Better yet, wait to visit until the shoulder season

Go to Colorado

Epic hiking, breathtaking nature and more craft beer than you could ever try in a lifetime: The Centennial State is a domestic gem. Ashlee Collins of Inspirato , a luxury travel and lifestyle subscription service, says Vail is popular among members this summer. Not only is the ski resort beautiful sans snow, it’s drivable for many, cutting a significant cost for travelers.

Airfare to Colorado is looking more reasonable than other domestic vacation hubs. Nastro recently spotted a Miami-to-Denver, round-trip fare over the July Fourth holiday for just $199. She says an average round trip from major U.S. cities is running between $173 and $250, but those prices are expected to climb upward of $350 the closer we get to summer.

Avoid places at risk for wildfires

Wildfires have become an unfortunate fixture of summers in the Northern Hemisphere. Last year’s fires in Europe — including those in Cyprus and Greece — were among the worst so far this century, the European Commission reported .

Stoller says fire risk has been a factor in her summer travel planning; she nixed a New England cruise after remembering how bad smoke was last year because of the fires in Canada . “None of us can predict everything, but that would be something I would be aware of,” she said.

Extreme heat is also an issue. Last July, Southern Europe experienced excessively high temperatures from a “heat dome.”

“There’s a concern about heat,” Stoller said. “Last summer was really painful.”

Go to the Caribbean

The Caribbean has its peak tourist season during the winter, when Americans flock to warmer waters. That means summer trips to the region tend to be quieter and cheaper.

“You can go under $300 to pretty much all of the islands: Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Aruba, Dominican Republic,” said Lindsay Schwimer, a consumer travel expert at Hopper . She’s seen similar price point flights to Colombia.

Lindsay of Skyscanner also said Puerto Rico and the Bahamas offer some of the most affordable flights from the United States this summer.

Avoid Paris

Unless you’re going for the Olympics , skip the French capital this summer.

“Paris is always a top destination in the summer, but this summer … it’s going to be on another level,” said Madison Pietrowski, head of U.S. brands at GetYourGuide .

Not only are hotel prices high, “we’re seeing that some of the top attractions like the Louvre have raised their ticket prices,” Pietrowski said.

Nastro says the crowds are going to be “bananas” during the Games, and not just in Paris. Olympic travelers are likely to add on other French destinations to their trip, like Nice — which will host soccer games — or the Côte d’Azur, which already gets popular in the summertime.

Even if you try to get ahead of the rush by visiting before the July 26 start date, you may still have some Olympics-related headaches in the French capital. As the city races to finish prep, “you might find that there’s going to be eyesores and scaffolding and loud noises early in the morning,” Nastro said.

Go to rural Europe

Interest in Western Europe has not slowed down, and Americans are expected to surge back en masse this summer. If you’d like to avoid them, put rural European destinations on your radar.

Weinacht is bullish on Spain’s Rioja region , the Basque countryside and the central Italian region of Umbria, which borders Tuscany but does not see the same levels of tourism. She’s also a fan of Carinthia, the least-populated state of Austria. “It is castle- and lake-dotted, doesn’t get too hot, and oh, the food and stories the cities and villages can tell,” Weinacht said in an email.

Weinacht says she’s been getting more requests from Americans for trips to her homeland, Germany. The country is easy to navigate with its high-speed trains, and offers a mix of small and big cities spread across powerhouse wine regions, UNESCO World Heritage sites and many food festivals . According to Skyscanner, airlines in the United States have been increasing their flights to Germany — namely, Frankfurt, an international business hub — meaning you may be able to find more deals.

Avoid Sicily and Amalfi

If your dream Italian destination has been featured on TV lately, that’s a red flag. The last season of “The White Lotus” spurred an interest in already popular Sicily ; the same is happening to the Amalfi Coast thanks to the new Netflix miniseries “Ripley.”

“They’re really going to be the most expensive and they’re going to be pretty crowded for the summer,” Schwimer said.
