Whats Happening in Memphis

Where to Ride a Bike in Memphis

Bike trails in memphis & surrounding area.

For those who enjoy riding a bike, the Memphis area is slowly becoming one of the best places around to do it and the future is looking even brighter for the city in the years ahead with bike lanes and trails either being added, extended, or connected to existing ones. It is really quite a turnaround for a city that did not have much to offer when it came to cycling with few trails and virtually no bike lanes on any of its streets. Over the last couple of years, however, Memphians have seen an amazing proliferation of places where cyclists can go to ride their bikes and they will undoubtedly continue to see a whole lot more in the future.

In & around Memphis, there are plenty of places for cyclists to go out for a ride with dozens of parks and recreational areas to venture out in. Although there are plenty to choose from, some of the best places include the following:

  • Shelby Farms
  • Shelby Farms Greenline
  • Wolf River Greenway
  • Overton Park
  • Collierville
  • Stanky Creek
  • Herb Parsons Lake
  • Meema-Shelby Forest Park

Bike Tours in Memphis

Googling “bike tours of Memphis” will get you the usual suspects: Midnight Classic Bicycle Tour , Tour de Grizz , Tour de Bird ; but these are not really tours as much as just organized rides. (The “Tour de” is a nod to “Tour de France” and is as ubiquitous as a pun-based bike shop name .) So I had to dig a little deeper. We’re talking 10 pages deep. In my search I found some tours that I can’t wait to try for myself:

1. Architecture Tours from AIA Memphis – AIA currently offers maps for four self-guided tours of unique and historical architecture in Memphis. The tours are grouped around neighborhoods which keeps the riding distance to a minimum. Local architects will also lead tours throughout the year. Click the link above to get on the e-mail list for the next event.

2. Tour de Coop – Another self-guided tour, this one of chicken coops, beehives, and gardens throughout the city. There’s a new group of coops every year; you get a map and you can walk, bike, or drive to see them all, talk to the owners and get ideas on how to build your own. Donations support the work of Grow Memphis.

3. Memphis Today & Tomorrow: By Bike – Local Planner Nick will lead you around the city and talk about “where Memphis is now and its exciting trajectory into the future.” Reservations can be made for $65/person which includes bike rental and a drink. I know Nick in a professional capacity and can say that the knowledge that he will drop on this tour will be well worth the price, but I’m more interested in the other bicycle tour that he offers:

4. Barbecue Bike Tour – This is a perfect combination and an almost necessary one. I mean, you can drive to 3 or 4 bbq joints but it would be much better to burn calories while you’re deciding between dry rub or wet rub, chicken, beef, pork, or portabella. This one also includes bike rental and a “predetermined sampling of specialties at 3 – 4 barbecue restaurants” for $95/person.

5. One Lap of Memphis – This is the tour you should do the day AFTER the Barbecue Bike tour. Affectionately called “Ironbutt 100”, this mountain bike tour covers almost 100 miles and captures all of the trails around Memphis, linking them together in a ride that’s “not a competition, it’s merely an exhibition of stupidity.” Several friends have completed this task and I can honestly say I don’t envy them. The $68 entry fee gets you food, a t-shirt, and a donation to 88bikes .

My search also turned up the Memphis Public Art Tour from the Urban Art Commission . While this self-guided tour is not specifically designed for bicycles, the locations of the art are all downtown where the bicycle is an exceptional mode of travel.

So what about that brewpub tour, because really, everyone likes beer. Here’s a link to a map . Note that these are the breweries that have taprooms. There’s a rumor circulating that Ghost River will have a taproom soon, and when that happens I’ll update the map.

Bike Resources Around Memphis

Here’s a link to the City of Memphis Bicycle Routes .

There are also some additional local area bike trails that you can check out on Memphis & Shelby County Bike Map , trails.com , midsouthtrails.com .

For interactive bicycle facility maps, here’s a link to Bike/Ped Memphis .

Aside from the trails, cyclists also have the option to ride on the streets and roads, but it is usually best to avoid those that have a high traffic volume, and are heavily congested, whenever possible. If interested in doing that, here is a link to a map with some bicycle-friendly routes within Memphis .

Cyclists should always exercise more caution when riding on city streets & roads and should always follow the rules of the road & use hand signals at the intersections to indicate what direction that they will be going in. The local area bike clubs, along with several bicycle shops, also offer group bike rides throughout Memphis & outlying areas for those who enjoy or prefer riding with others.

Only places that are within a radius of about 30 miles, (or are approximately a 45-minute drive from Memphis), were included on this page, but there are countless other places that cyclists can go if they are willing to travel even further than this. Here are a couple of links for trails throughout the State of Tennessee & beyond:

  • http://www.trails.com/stateactivity.aspx?area=10315 ,
  • http://www.state.tn.us/environment/parks/BRAT/ ,
  • Great Outdoor Recreation Pages ,
  • National Parks (like the Great Smoky Mountains) ,
  • http://www.traillink.com/ provides maps, nearby routes, bike shops, parking, some food, restroom stops, etc

You can also review & plan your own route by going to Google maps. You can also go to Google maps. Once you’re there, you should select directions &, after that, you will want to choose the cyclist icon, which is the second one on the far right-hand side. From there you can zoom in & view all of the area bicycles routes in green. In addition to that, you can also use the Mid-South Regional Greenprint to create your route by selecting the corridor that you wish to go in and you can see what facilities will be available to you.

Your Ultimate Guide to Biking in Memphis

Find your place.

Memphis is pedaling its way to becoming a haven for bikers of all stripes. From its scenic bike lanes weaving through historic parks to its burgeoning bike culture, this city invites you to explore its charm, history, and future on two wheels. Whether you’re cruising downtown or joining a community ride, Memphis’s bike scene is vibrant, inclusive, and full of surprises. So, grab your helmet, pump up your tires, and let’s dive into the ultimate guide to biking in Memphis.

Becoming a Biking City

Not so long ago, Memphis was considered a no-go for cyclists. Fast forward a few years, and it’s now celebrated as one of the most improved cities for biking in America. This transformation didn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of dedicated efforts by the community and the city to make Memphis more bike-friendly. This shift towards cycling reflects a broader movement towards sustainability and community in Memphis, where biking is more than just transportation—it’s about building connections and sharing experiences.

Where To Ride: Discover the Best Routes in memphis

Memphis is rich in diverse biking trails and lanes suited for every type of cyclist. Planning a ride downtown? Don’t miss the opportunity to pedal by the Mississippi River on the Big River Crossing. For a more urban vibe, the Broad Avenue Arts District offers a colorful backdrop to your ride, not to mention a perfect chance to check out some local art and grab a bite. Adventure seekers and nature lovers will find solace in the extensive trails of the Wolf River Greenway or the serene paths of Overton Park.

Connecting with Other Riders

The heart of Memphis’s biking culture is its community. Whether you’re looking to join a leisurely group ride or dive into competitive cycling, there’s a spot for you. For those who love combining biking with community service, the Urban Bicycle Food Ministry is an excellent way to meet fellow cyclists while giving back. Looking for something a bit more relaxed? The Peddler Bike Shop hosts group rides that are perfect for making new friends. And let’s not forget the annual Tour de Grizz, a unique blend of biking and basketball fandom that embodies the spirit of Memphis.

more than just repairs: Community Bike Shops

Memphis’s bike shops are community hubs where cyclists can find support, education, and fellowship. Revolutions Bicycle Cooperative is more than just a place to get your bike fixed—it’s a space where you can learn about bike maintenance, participate in workshops, and even build your own bike. Meanwhile, Oasis Bike Shop offers programs aimed at youth, empowering the next generation of Memphis cyclists.

Memphis Bike Culture Continues to Grow

Memphis’s bike scene is as dynamic as the city itself, constantly evolving and expanding. It’s a culture that celebrates the unique spirit of Memphis, encouraging residents and visitors alike to explore, connect, and contribute. As you gear up for your next ride, remember that each pedal stroke is part of a larger journey towards making Memphis an even more vibrant, bike-friendly city.

Planning on biking downtown? Make sure to roll into the heart of Memphis’s culture by stopping at the Broad Avenue Arts District. Here, you can experience the city’s artistic soul, grab a delicious bite, and maybe even catch a live performance.

Before you go, don’t forget to check out our other guides and blogs on Choose901, like our spotlight on Memphis’s Green Spaces or the latest local events. Each ride in Memphis is an opportunity to discover something new, whether it’s a hidden mural, a cozy café, or a community event that speaks to the heart of the city.

Pedaling Forward

As Memphis continues to embrace and expand its biking culture, there’s no better time than now to join the movement. Whether you’re exploring the city’s bike lanes for the first time or you’re a seasoned cyclist, Memphis offers a unique blend of urban adventure, community connection, and scenic beauty. So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and explore Memphis on two wheels!

We were meant to do the pedal tavern in May but obviously, due to COVID-19, we had to cancel. I reached out for a refund; however was told that I could only get a voucher for $300 that has to be used before the end of 2020. Well, seeing as COVID-19 is still rampant, the wedding has already happened at this point, and I don't have plans to bring 10 people to Memphis with me in the near future, the voucher is worthless. With the current pandemic, I think that it would have been pertinent to issue a refund instead of just a voucher. Read more Written 26 October 2020

Your guide to Memphis

Getting around Memphis is really a matter of personal preference. Streets are wide and easy to navigate, so renting a car makes sense if you plan to frequently venture beyond downtown. If you're planning to spend the majority of your trip in the downtown area, you'll be fine using MATA-the inexpensive public transportation system-or hopping on the trolley or hailing a taxi or rideshare for longer jaunts.

Memphis summers are long and hot. Longer than a boa constrictor. Hotter than a pressure cooker. You get the picture. We're talking average summer highs well into the 90s°F. For this reason, we recommend visiting between April and May or October and November, when there are two windows of great weather. The winter months do get pretty cold, so unless you're dying for an excuse to wear your new sweater, this isn't the best time to visit.

A trip to Memphis calls for sunscreen and an umbrella; it's very hot and very humid here, so you'll get use out of both. Here are some other things we recommend you put in your suitcase:

  • Cotton clothes: Don't subject yourself to the sticky horror that comes from wearing synthetic fabrics in extreme humidity. All natural, all the time.
  • Insect repellent: Proximity to the Mississippi makes for great photos and great outdoor fun, but also great numbers of mosquitos. Keep them at bay.
  • Shoes for walking: Memphis isn't an overly glamorous city, and while the nightlife is vibrant, it's fairly laid-back. Comfy shoes will serve you well.

When you tip-toe through the humble origin near Lake Itasca, you will never believe this trickle of water will be the “Mighty Mississippi” emptying into the Gulf of Mexico some 2552 miles downstream.

Your cycling journey will take you from the headwaters of the Mississippi along the borders of eleven states. The tour is southbound, but not all down-hill.

Indulge in cuisine varying from Wall-eyed Pike and wild rice, St. Louis-style Ribs to Crawfish Etouffee and powdered Beignets.

Along your route, enjoy the scenery on the 150-mile paved Paul Bunyan Trail, urban trails in Minneapolis, St. Louis, Memphis and the levee trails in Louisiana. Take in the rollers along the farmlands of Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois. Relax or take in the sites of Anheuser Busch, The Arch or a day cruise on a riverboat in St. Louis. If you are a history buff, Memphis, Vicksburg and New Orleans will fill your head with facts on American, Native American and Civil War history. The impeccably maintained plantation houses of Louisiana will provide luxurious accommodations.

The Mississippi Bike tour is conveniently divided into 4 stages for those who cannot commit to the full 33-Day trek. The stages start and stop in major cities, making it easy to join any leg of the tour.

TIPS FOR FIRST TIMERS

What to bring.

NO GLASS, NO EXCEPTIONS! The City of Memphis prohibits glass on these bikes.

Bring anything you’d like to eat or drink. Beer, boxed wine, cider and liquor are all permitted. Sprock n’ Roll will provide cups as the City requires all alcohol be in a cup.

Definitely bring some food! Even though you’ll be stopping at local bars and restaurants, you won’t want to waste your tour time sitting down for a meal or app.

Bring cash! You will want to tip your awesome driver as well as the bartenders that serve you at each stop. A 20% tip is customary for our guides.

And, don’t forget to bring your photo ID.

What About The Weather?

We run rain or shine as we can dress according to the weather. Some of the most fun tours we’ve had were during thunderstorms. The roof of the bikes provides a great canopy and shelter from the rain. (We do reserve the right to cancel tours due to dangerous weather, i.e. hail, lightning.)

What To Wear

The key word for the vehicle is CASUAL. High heels are not the best idea and can hinder your pedaling capabilities. Comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting a little sweaty in are perfect.  We do not suggest jeans in the summer!

If it’s cool, wear layers.

Who Is In Charge?

We provide the driver for all tours. His or her decisions are final. Unruly passengers may be asked to leave.

You decide when and where we stop. Each stop is about 20 minutes long.

Book Your Tour

Everyone must be 21 to ride.  NO GLASS ALLOWED.

A 15-20% tip for your guide is included in tour pricing. A 25% Deposit is due at booking.  Your credit card on file will be charged 4 days prior to your tour.  If booking less than 4 days in advance to tour the entire balance will be due at booking.  Don't see your time slot available? We offer both Midtown and Downtown tours so check the other route or call us at 901-500-7101 and we will do our best to accomodate you.

Please Agree with the Terms and Conditions Below

I agree with the terms and conditions listed above and here

Payment will not be taken from your provided credit card until we reach the minimum of 4 people for this ride. You will get an email confirmation once we receive your reservation as well as a confirmation email once we reach our minimum.

Please do not be late for this experience. We ask that you arrive early, so please see your confirmation email for specifics on arrival time, location, what to bring, etc. The bike will depart on time and once the majority of people have arrived. You will not receive a refund if you are late and the bike has departed.
