The vinyl artwork for Metric’s new album, Formentera, includes a motto that sums up the past few years: This Is What Happened. It’s an understatement that manages to say everything. Even real places become imaginary when they are so far out of reach. Named for an idyllic island near Ibiza off the coast of Spain, Formentera is a place that, for Metric, only existed on a page in a “dream destinations” travel book that lay open on a desk in the new recording studio that guitarist Jimmy Shaw built in 2020, in a rural hamlet north of Toronto. This is the setting where the band’s eighth album took shape.
Metric’s sound is both genre-defying and genre-defining. Emily Haines, Jimmy Shaw, bassist Joshua Winstead and drummer Joules Scott Key started playing together in NYC in 2001. They are just getting started.
The band will be hitting the road on a North American headline tour, The Doomscroller Tour, and have partnered with PLUS1 so that $1 per ticket goes to supporting War Child and their work to empower children and families in communities affected by war throughout the world.
“One of the high points of 2022 for us has been working on putting everything together for The Doomscroller Tour,” says frontwomen Emily Haines. “We’re crafting a set list based on fan favorites including deep cuts from Live it Out & Old World and it’s been wild to see how the new songs from Formentera flow with the classics from Fantasies & Synthetica. I’m really happy with the venues we chose, they suit the lighting and sonics and the whole mood of the show we’re crafting. I want Metric fans to have the best concert experience possible and feel like they got to escape into another reality with us for the evening. Can’t wait to get this show on the road!”

Metric announce 2023 UK & EU tour
Following the release of their critically-acclaimed new album Formentera , Metric have announced a run of UK & EU shows in 2023, including a date at London’s Roundhouse on February 1st.
“One of the high points of 2022 for us has been working on putting everything together for The Doomscroller Tour,” says frontwomen Emily Haines. “We’re crafting a set list based on fan favourites including deep cuts from Live it Out & Old World and it’s been wild to see how the new songs from Formentera flow with the classics from Fantasies & Synthetica . I’m really happy with the venues we chose, they suit the lighting and sonics and the whole mood of the show we’re crafting. I want Metric fans to have the best concert experience possible and feel like they got to escape into another reality with us for the evening. Can’t wait to get this show on the road!”
Kicking off at The Academy in Dublin on January 28th 2023, the run of dates will be the band’s first shows in the UK and Europe since 2018. Support for the dates comes from Metric’s label mates Lo Moon. Tickets go on-sale July 22nd at 10am BST HERE .

Formentera is named for an idyllic island near Ibiza off the coast of Spain—a place which, for Metric, only existed in a “dream destinations” travel book sitting on the desk of their recording studio. “We had been living in our imaginations for a long time, because we couldn’t physically go anywhere else,” explains guitarist and co-producer Shaw. “When you listen to the album from beginning to end, you start with this immediate feeling of tension building, of being stuck in a loop, and then there’s this intense release that happens… you’re swept off your feet into the title track ‘Formentera’ and it’s like you escaped.”
They recently launched a mobile app, giving fans early access to limited edition vinyl, exclusive content, concert tickets and more, including 7” singles for “All Comes Crashing” and “Doomscroller” within the app for fans to purchase. You can download the app at ilovemetricapp.com .

Metric North American “The Doomscroller Tour” To Kick Off This August
Metric Unveil New Song + Video “All Comes Crashing”
From forthcoming eighth studio album formentera, set for release july 8th.
Today, Metric share a new single and video “ All Comes Crashing ;” Listen/share HERE and watch/share the video HERE .
“All Comes Crashing” is the first offering from Metric’s upcoming eighth studio album, Formentera , set to release on July 8th . “Not everyone has a conventional life with conventional relationships,” says front woman Emily Haines . “‘All Comes Crashing’” is a love song that goes beyond romantic love, it’s an expression of solidarity with whoever it is you would want to have beside you in the event of catastrophe. It might be your best friend, it might be your blood brother or your dog. The song is dedicated to those you consider your family, whatever that looks like for you.”
The words This Is What Happened flash across the screen in the video and have come to serve as the band’s motto as they reckon with the events of the last few years—a band at its peak of creative power attempting to decipher the turbulent world around us, with Haines positioned like a lightning rod in the midst of it, emerging with a fresh new album that sounds like essential Metric.
The band will be hitting the road on a Live Nation produced North American headline tour, The Doomscroller Tour , set to kick off this August in Victoria, BC with stops in 39-cities. Complete list of dates below. Metric has partnered with PLUS1 so that $1 per ticket goes to supporting War Child and their work to empower children and families in communities affected by war throughout the world.
“We’re crafting a set list based on fan favorites including deep cuts from Live It Out and Old World , and it’s been wild to see how the new songs from Formentera flow with the classics from Fantasies and Synthetica ,” says Haines. “…I want Metric fans to have the best concert experience possible and feel like they got to escape into another reality with us for the evening.”

The ‘Wild God’ tour will follow shortly the release of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ new album of the same name on August 30.
“I hope the album has the effect on listeners that it’s had on me,” Cave shared in a press statement. “It bursts out of the speaker, and I get swept up with it. It’s a complicated record, but it’s also deeply and joyously infectious.”
He continued: “There is never a masterplan when we make a record. The records rather reflect back the emotional state of the writers and musicians who played them. Listening to this, I don’t know, it seems we’re happy.”
He previously shared that the album isn’t “set through a lens of loss” like ‘Skeleton Tree’ (2016) and ‘Ghosteen’ (2019), which were centred around the loss of his 15-year-old son Arthur.

The Olympics are usually a sustainability disaster. Can Paris be different?
Organizers of the Paris Olympics have pledged that the event will be “historic for the climate,” setting a goal of generating no more than half the planet-warming emissions produced by recent Summer Games in London and Rio.
But putting on an event that attracts nearly 13 million spectators, athletes and officials from over 200 countries is, by definition, a carbon-heavy enterprise. A 2021 analysis of past Olympic Games found that the events have never been very environmentally sustainable, and they’ve tended to get worse over time, despite organizers touting the Games’ green credentials.
“What you can see in the Olympics in general is a difference between the rhetoric and the actual facts,” said Martin Müller, lead author of the 2021 study. “And the thing is that the rhetoric usually prevails.”
The Washington Post talked to experts to get a reality check on whether Paris’s goals are achievable. “It’s possible,” said Müller, who is a professor of geography and sustainability at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. “I wouldn’t question the legitimacy of the goal.”
What Paris wants to achieve
The Paris Olympics’ organizing committee says it has a plan to keep these Games within a budget of 1.58 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent — the same warming impact as driving 376,000 cars for a year.
Previous Olympics have attempted to address and account for Games-related emissions using a similar approach, but no recent Games appeared to have gone as far as Paris is planning. Organizers say they’ll achieve their planned cuts by slashing emissions in three categories: construction, transportation and operations.
“It was an opportunity for us to stage this Games in a different way,” said Georgina Grenon, Paris 2024’s director of environmental excellence, “both for us to prove that the Games can be done differently, but also to leave a legacy.”
Recycled venues
New construction is usually a major source of Games’ emissions — one that organizers can control. While Olympic host cities often splurge on building venues, arenas and other infrastructure, Paris organizers plan to mostly use existing or temporary infrastructure, Grenon said.
What they built new — including the Olympic Village and the aquatic center — generated 30 percent less carbon per square meter compared with a standard project in France today, she added.
Paris’s construction targets are achievable, experts said.
“It actually is relatively easy to get to a 30 percent reduction,” said Victor Olgyay, a buildings expert at RMI, an energy think tank. For instance, some studies have shown that builders could reach a nearly 50 percent reduction in emissions at similar costs by using alternative materials instead of traditional cement, concrete and steel, he said.
To hit its emissions target, Paris has built many structures, including the aquatic arena, out of wood, low-carbon cement or materials salvaged from deconstruction.
The strategies to cut emissions from construction are “generally good practices and get them to the low carbon footprint,” said Nora Esram, senior director for research at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. “We have the materials, we have the technology. These are not new.”
Getting there
Paris organizers expect to sell 12.8 million tickets to the Games, with spectators generating an estimated 395,000 metric tons of carbon emissions while traveling, according to Grenon.
That emissions estimate is lower than what the London Olympics budgeted in 2012. Those Games drew more than 11 million spectators, who were expected to generate 456,000 metric tons of emissions, according to a pre-Games report . A post-Games report found that London’s spectator emissions were even higher than expected , although it didn’t specify how many of those emissions came from travel.
“The visitor travel estimate strikes me as relatively low,” Müller said. “Maybe Paris might have the same kind of travel [as London]. They’re in a similar location, globally speaking, to London.”
Grenon said it’s too early to know where the Paris spectators will be coming from or how they’re traveling. “It’s still an estimate,” she said. “We haven’t sold all the tickets.”
Organizers can’t control how spectators will travel to the Games. All they can do is encourage fans to travel by train when possible — especially if they’re coming from nearby European countries. Olympic partner Air France is advertising a deal for fans from faraway countries that allows them to book flights into France with a connecting train ride to destinations such as Bordeaux, Nantes, Lyon, Saint-Étienne, Nice, Marseille and Lille, which will host soccer, handball and sailing events.
The Olympic committee is recruiting athletes to set a good example. Four national teams — from the Netherlands, Britain, Belgium and Switzerland — have agreed to travel by train. The Games’ officials and 15,000 athletes are expected to generate an additional 142,000 metric tons of travel emissions.
“Will this avoid transportation and air travel [emissions] altogether? Certainly not,” Grenon said. “But at least we’re trying to do what we can at this stage in 2024 to address the issue.”
Much as during the London and Rio games, Paris organizers are encouraging spectators to travel around the city using public transportation or bicycles.
Powering the Games
Olympic organizers say they’ve practically zeroed out their energy emissions. Electricity and natural gas will make up less than 1 percent of the Games’ overall footprint, according to official estimates.
Some of the Games’ energy will come from solar panels, which will dot the roofs of the Olympic Village, float atop the surface of the Seine and hang over the new aquatics stadium.
The rest will come from the French power grid, which is dominated by nuclear power and produces some of the lowest emissions in Europe . Olympic organizers say they’ve made a deal with the French national utility Électricité de France (EDF) to buy renewable power equivalent to what the Games consume.
EDF also created new backup electrical connections for the Olympic stadiums, which will make the power supply more reliable. As a result, Paris organizers say they won’t run any of the backup diesel generators that stadiums typically keep on standby in case of a power failure.
Organizers wouldn’t share details about the Olympic cauldron, which they said would be revealed at the Opening Ceremonies. During the London Olympics , the natural-gas-burning cauldron consumed more energy than any single stadium, venue or housing complex.
Müller said it’s not surprising that energy emissions would be so low, since French electricity is so clean. Plus, he said, “most of the energy emissions are constrained to the two-week period of the actual Olympic Games, which is relatively short.”
Keeping cool
More savings could come from lowering how much energy is needed to cool buildings. In addition to planting thousands of trees around Paris, the city has installed misters and light-colored surfaces and sidewalks to help combat the summer heat. In recent years, France, along with other parts of Europe, has weathered record-breaking heat waves during summer months.
“Those make a big difference,” Olgyay said. “It’ll be a lot cooler. You’re more comfortable, but also your building is more comfortable, so that’s going to reduce the impact of that heat on buildings.”
To further cut energy usage, organizers of the Games said the Olympic Village — which features buildings with improved insulation — will use a geothermal water-cooling system. Instead of traditional air conditioning, the buildings will rely on a network of pipes cycling water cooled underground.
A previous version of this story incorrectly referred to the Olympic cauldron as the Olympic torch. The torch is a portable flame that travels to the Games in a relay and is used to light the cauldron, which stays lit until the Closing Ceremonies. The article has been corrected.

Fix Your SDLC Before Adopting Gen AI in Your Organisation: Bannon’s Call to Action at QCon London

During her keynote at QCon London , Tracy Bannon , senior principal/software architect and researcher at MITRE , argued that AI will be able to enhance the software development lifecycle (SDLC), though currently it’s at the "code completion" rather than "code generation" phase. Throughout her presentation, she continuously stresses the importance of keeping humans in the loop and fixing your company’s SDLC before embracing AI.
Bannon started by comparing the adoption of generative AI in software development with the transition from physical maps to the (now) ubiquitous navigation software. The first phase of the transition was the web-based Google Maps navigation hints printed on paper, then dedicated GPS units, and finally the current state of navigation applications incorporated in each smartphone.
And even though there is a huge buzz all around us about the benefits and the power of generative AI (" You would expect AI to be present in supermarkets between biscuits and milk "), the technology is just a small part of the "ML Universe".
She emphasized that the work done by software architects and developers is complex, and often no "black or white" decisions can be taken. There are always tradeoffs to be considered, which points to AI only being capable of assisting in these decisions. For emphasis, she quoted industry leaders:
Grady Booch, IBM Fellow: The entire history of software engineering is one of rising levels of abstraction.
Paul Edwards, CTO @ AND Digital: Software engineers do complex work. It consists of problem-solving in a messy, non-linear environment where there is no right or wrong answer to a problem and where there are multiple trade-offs to be made
Further, she referred to areas where AI could be used in SDLC, quoting data from Stack Overflow’s 2023 developer survey with documentation, code augmentation, debugging, code completion and test augmentation being the areas where developers tried using generative AI.
She pointed at the "elephant in the corner" : now there is more code completion than code generation. And she recommended developers use one of the two: generate tests and write code, or vice-versa. But never the two, because:
The Human Needs to be Kept in The Loop, the Gen AI is like a 15-year-old with a lot of energy that sometimes makes you proud of their achievements and at points makes you ask yourself why would it do that?"
More than that, she underlined that generative AI contradicts some of the DevSecOps principles (traceability, audibility, reproducibility, explainability), stressing the issue of security. She mentioned that the code she generated with different tools broke the OWASP Web Security Principles but also that the code you have might leave the boundaries of your organisation.
Bannon recommended fixing the SDLC in your organisation before adopting AI. She hinted that a good starting point is implementing minimum viable continuous delivery while measuring the impact in your organisation pointing at SPACE and DORA metrics (a good metric to start is the number of deployments).
In the last part of her presentation, Bannon provided a call to action to the audience inviting them to:
- Survey your organization to see if and how Al is being used
- Enable research and discovery for genAl usage
- Make cybersecurity your highest priority
- Establish reasonable guardrails
- Connect with your providers to ask about model quality and security questions
- Ask your platform providers about their Al roadmap
She encouraged the audience to ask themselves the following questions:
- How do you think the SDLC will change?
- How is your organisation preparing?
- What are you personally focusing on?
- Share your organization's story, and the lessons learned
- Explore and share new use cases and new tools
Bannon concluded her presentation by pointing out that it’s impossible to go back before we had AI ( "You can’t put the genie back in the bottle" ) and encouraged developers to keep cybersecurity as the number one concern while moving forward with generative AI. It is still valuable to keep the human in the loop.
