WELCOME – Minister Of Tourism, Industry And Commerce

WELCOME – Minister Of Tourism, Industry And Commerce

This is particularly an exciting time for us in Guyana. We are already buoyed by our transformative development happening across our country, and equally enthusing, is the growth and expansion we have been experiencing within the tourism sector.

This magazine will be launched during our Cricket Carnival, which is a phenomenal sport attraction that highlights GuyanaÕs potential to be the entertainment capital of the Caribbean. But this is just the beginning. You can expect to see Guyana hosting more major events, including conferences and sport tournaments in the near future.

It is against this projected growth of tourist arrivals, that we continue to build capacity by expanding the available room stock. Apart from the 1500 international-branded hotel rooms that will become available soon, there has been a surge in bed and breakfast offerings and many Guyanese are now converting properties to bed and breakfast rentalsto meet the rising demand for accommodation.

Guyana is phenomenal and I encourage all of you to explore this unique product Destination Guyana; a land that offers an enthralling mix of rest and adventure. As you browse this magazine, this will become more and more evident. There are attractions and activities all across Guyana that will captivate you, whether you prefer safari, rodeo, regatta, birdwatching, game fishing, horseback riding or just the warmth and serenity of one of our indigenous communities.

As we interact with visitors and other stakeholders, more experiential travel products are being created so that visitors can be fully immersed in our culture and maximize on your experiences. Between September and December, 12 new products will be launched. I encourage you to look out for these new offerings and begin booking once they are announced. If you have suggestions on additional products or ways we can improve our existing ones, please reach out to us at the ministry. We would love to hear from you.

In closing, let me congratulate the publishers of Tourism Guyana 2022/2023 Magazine, for completing yet another edition. I see this publication as an important component of our tourism development. Thank you for your confidence and for appreciating the value of Destination Guyana.

To our visitors, use this magazine as another guide to identify must-visit places in Guyana. Happy travelling!

Tourism Authority urges innovation, collaboration to recover from pandemic slump

' data-src=

“Preparing for a New Frontier – Stimulating Innovation within the Tourism Sector” is this year’s theme for Tourism Awareness Month 2021.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, tourism sectors all across the world took a beating and in Guyana it was not different. In fact, Guyana’s tourism sector lost about $33.6 billion in 2020, owing to the restrictions put in place to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

But now with an ease in travel, reduced curfew hours and vaccination numbers growing daily, there is hope that the once thriving sector can be revived.

“The tourism sector was decimated but stakeholders have been resilient and have been supported by the government…we have witnessed innovation and change but we need to collaborate now more than ever,” Kamrul Baksh, acting Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority said on Monday.

He was speaking during the official launch of Tourism Awareness Month 2021 at the Bimichi-Eco Lodge at St. Cuthbuert’s Mission, a small Amerdian Village located a few miles up the Linden Soesdyke Highway.

“We can capitalise and accelerate tourism development in Guyana, if we work together.”

This year’s initiatives, Baksh said, is focused on stimulating tourism for the new post-pandemic era.

These include a new Tourism App to track tourist movement in Guyana and the launching of seven new tourism products – all indigenous centered.

But not only this, Tourism Awareness Month 2021 gives all and sundry equal opportunity to experience the beauty and pristine nature of Guyana.

Tourism Minister Oneidge Waldron, who delivered the feature address, lauded the hosting of the activity at the Bimichi-Eco Lodge; she said that it is part and parcel of the government’s efforts to grow the country’s domestic tourism market.

“In this regard, St. Cuthbert’s is ideally located for those in Georgetown and its environs who desire a quick overnight or weekend retreat into serenity,” Minister Waldron stated.

“The possibilities here are truly immense and we are gratified to see initiatives such as these take root and grow.”

The Tourism Minister was keen to note that the theme for this year’s celebration is apt as it forces tourism centered businesses to come up with innovate strategies to suit the post-COVID world.2

“We cannot advance with archaic strategies and approaches.

“So as policy makers and stakeholders, we must now refine out tourism offerings to cater for what will be the new norms and expectations of the post-COVID 21 st  century,” Minister Oneigde added.

With a packed programme, Guyanese can look forward to a whole host of activities ranging from the the Guyana Tourism Awards, the highly anticipated Guyana Restaurant Week  and a fun 4×4 road adventure drive.

The launching of the month’s festivities also saw the relaunching of the Bimichi-Eco Lodge by the Tourism Minister and owner Amanda Mahadeo.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Oneidge Walrond during her address at the Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development in Grenada

IN a significant move towards inclusive and sustainable tourism, Guyana’s Ministry of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce has announced its support for 20 indigenous communities across the country in building community enterprises. This announcement came during a speech delivered on Tuesday by subject minister Oneidge Walrond at the Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development in Grenada.

The conference, held under the theme, “The 5Ps for a Legacy of Caribbean Tourism Sustainability: People, Planet, Prosperity, Purpose & Partnership,” provided a platform for regional stakeholders to discuss key issues and strategies for sustainable tourism development in the Caribbean.

Addressing emerging challenges within the sector, Minister Walrond told the audience that one of Guyana’s primary unique value propositions is the Indigenous community-led and owned tourism enterprises. “By empowering our Indigenous people to take the reins of their own tourism ventures, we ensure their economic prosperity and the preservation of their culture,” the minister said.

She outlined Guyana’s approach to overcoming challenges within the sector, which includes utilising a Community-Led and Owned Tourism Framework and Toolkit and continuous collaboration and partnership with key stakeholders, including the tourism private sector.

“This empowers the indigenous peoples and creates differentiated products that allow significant economic growth of those communities, and simultaneously strengthening the greatest stewards of the rainforests and lands,” she reiterated.

Minister Walrond emphasised the importance of tourism as a driver of economic growth, cultural preservation, and ecological conservation. She noted that Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030 plays a pivotal role in guiding the country’s sustainable tourism efforts by promoting a new low-carbon economy and establishing incentives which value the world’s ecosystem services.

She also discussed Guyana’s efforts to meet market demands by investing in infrastructure and hospitality and promoting unique tourism offerings. She highlighted the country’s plans to add over 2,000 new rooms under international brands and develop the Hospitality and Tourism Training Institute (HTTI) to enhance service excellence.

“Over the last four years, there has been a conscious effort to create a diversified and resilient product portfolio. This was made possible through extensive partnerships with our communities, the tourism private sector, and technical assistance support,” the minister added.

Noting that sustainability is a core value and way of life for many Guyanese, Minister Walrond reaffirmed Guyana’s commitment to promoting responsible and sustainable tourism and achieving global accreditation for sustainable tourism practices. She expressed optimism for the future of Caribbean tourism and the role of sustainable practices in shaping its legacy.

Another 10-acre onion trial commences at NAREI

Following promising results from the trial cultivation of onions, Guyana is well on its way to meeting local onion demands, as it intends to scale up the production at the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara.

In this vein, the government has already developed 10 acres of land for another trial in onion production.

This was highlighted by Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha during a recent episode of the  Guyana Dialogue.

Minister Mustapha emphasised, “ We have already started the trial. Last time, we had 18 tonnes per acre. We are looking to increase that. We have started a 10 acre for another trial in onion production.”

During an assessment of the cultivation of high-value crops and the onion project in November 2023, President, Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali emphasised the importance of strategically focusing on regional markets, anticipating lower import costs and a major boost to national food security.

The onion project had spanned 2.6 acres of land.

The Brazilian variety of onions, which was imported to reduce the country’s dependence on imports, demonstrated a harvest of about 9.5 tonnes per acre across the 12 beds.

It was also highlighted that onions could be produced twice a year with favourable results.

Besides the onion project, Guyana has also diversified into the cultivation of other crops such as citrus, spices, cocoa, coffee, hemp, millet, wheat, and barley.

These are some of the new crops that are at experimental stages that Guyana intends to add to its crop production in the coming years. The undertaking of traditional and non-traditional crops is all part of efforts geared towards Guyana and the Caribbean region achieving food security by the year 2025.
