Swatch and OMEGA "reach for the planets" with the Bioceramic MoonSwatch Collection

OMEGA X Swatch celebrates the iconic Speedmaster Moonwatch, the first watch ever worn on the Moon. The Bioceramic MoonSwatch Collection is the result of an unexpected, provocative, and visionary partnership — a first between Swatch and OMEGA.

Inspired by space, each of the eleven models is named after a planetary body in our solar system, from the giant star at the center to the dwarf planet at its periphery. What launches this collection into orbit, however, is the fusion of the innovative Bioceramic material with the key OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch design elements. It is a down-to-earth take on the watch that went to the Moon and a perfect representation of Swatch’s joy of life and innovation philosophy.

Two years after the launch of the OMEGA X Swatch collaboration, the Bioceramic MoonSwatch Collection launches not one, but two new missions! The two new models in the non-limited collection, MISSION TO THE MOONPHASE - FULL MOON and MISSION TO THE MOONPHASE - NEW MOON, are the only Swatch chronographs with a moon phase function. Snoopy, NASA's safety ambassador since the 1960's, adorns the moon phase disc on both models. 

Both models are now available at selected Swatch stores. As with the whole Bioceramic MoonSwatch Collection, only one watch can be purchased per person, per day and per Swatch store.

Each model in the Bioceramic MoonSwatch Collection features the asymmetrical case, the iconic 'dot over ninety' on the tachymeter scale, and the distinctive Speedmaster subdials. 

All dials feature the OMEGA X Swatch branding, the iconic Speedmaster logo, and the new MoonSwatch logo. A closer look at the domed biosourced glass construction reveals the "hidden" 'S' integrated in the center of the crystal. The circular pattern on the dial's outer ring and recessed subdials brings a refined touch to the design, complementing the sharp and smooth lugs construction. The hours, minutes, chronograph seconds hands, and hour markers sport Super-LumiNova® for a perfect glow in the dark.

The double-beveled caseback on each Bioceramic MoonSwatch is printed with the mission text and features integrated wording sure to inspire: "DREAM BIG – FLY HIGHER – EXPLORE THE UNIVERSE – REACH FOR THE PLANETS."

Every battery cover on the back has an image of the planetary body that inspires the design.

MoonSwatch heads on European tour to give customers a chance to buy the elusive timepiece

“Summer is the time for travel, adventure, festivals and fun, and Swatch is taking a road trip that’s out of this world,” the company says.

First it caused hysteria around the world with obsessed crowds trying to be one of the first to buy.

Then MoonSwatch became one of the most talked about launches of the year as the £207 bioceramic timekeeper started being traded online for five times its retail price.

Swatch Group tried to cool the sometimes dangerously overheated market by reminding customers that the MoonSwatch is not limited, it would be sold online in due course, and that every customer who wanted one would eventually get it.

A recent round of interviews with Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek appeared to reverse an earlier statement — made on its official Instagram channel — that MoonSwatch would be sold online , and he made the case that 2022 is a year when we should all be getting out of the house, away from staring at screens, and enjoying the physical shopping experience again.

MoonSwatch is only available in 110 Swatch boutiques worldwide and on no authorised e-commerce platforms.

Swatch is taking MoonSwatch to the people with the announcement that it is embarking on a MoonSwatch European tour.

A fleet of Fiat 500s have been customised in the colours of the 11 MoonSwatch variants, and are expected to be sent to the far flung corners of Europe.

A full list of dates and locations is yet to be announced. All Swatch has said so far is that the MoonSwatch summer tour starts today, July 12, at its headquarters in Biel, Switzerland.

A promotional image shows signposts to Germany, London, Greece, France, Portugal, Mykonos, Locarno, St-Tropez, Barcelona, Ibiza, Porto Cervo and Marbella.

Many of the tourist hot spots do not have Swatch stores, so this will be a first chance for some people to see and [hopefully] buy the watch.

Launched earlier this year, the MoonSwatch Collection pays tribute to the first watch on the moon, the Omega Speedmaster.

Each of the eleven models references a different planet or celestial body within the solar system.

The MoonSwatch Goes on a Summer Tour

Missed out on the hottest collaborative timepiece launch of the year in the incredibly popular MoonSwatch? Never fear, as this summer Swatch is bringing their riff on the Omega Speedmaster to you in their MoonSwatch Summer Tour.

Starting its journey today from Swatch’s Biel Headquarters in Switzerland, the rolling tour pairs each of the eleven planets in the MoonSwatch solar system with a bespoke car. The MoonSwatch is now easier to buy

Your chances of finally buying a MoonSwatch might just have improved

It feels like we begin every MoonSwatch story like this, but Swatch’s immensely popular Omega collaboration is still ( still ) difficult to buy , and online sales still haven’t materialised.

But there is hope. Following news of the must-have watch going on a European tour for its summer holidays, Swatch now says the MoonSwatch collection is available in 28 more stores worldwide.

Previously, and since the watch launched back in March, it was only available at a few stores in each country Swatch operated. Now though, there are 28 extra locations intending to offer MoonSwatch stock, and these are all listed on the Swatch website .

This doesn’t mean everyone can buy one today though, and it means many shoppers will still have to travel – and in some cases, travel hundreds of miles, or even to a neighbouring country – to get their hands on one.

In the UK, for example, there are still only three Swatch stores in England where the MoonSwatch is (sometimes) available, and they are all in London. Head north, and Scotland now has a second MoonSwatch retailer, in the form of the Glasgow Swatch store, alongside the Edinburgh outlet.

Countries with Swatch stores newly designated as MoonSwatch outlets include Austra, France, Greece, Italy, Serbia, Spain, Switzerland, Canada, Mexico and the USA, as well as Qatar, South Africa, China, Indonesia, Israel, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore.

To be clear, these Swatch shops already existed, but are now also stocking the MoonSwatch. This means they’ll have a display case in the window showing every version of the watch, and they will receive occasional (but, hopefully, increasingly frequent) deliveries of MoonSwatch stock.

We’d still love to see the MoonWatch available online, but adding availability to a bunch of new stores suggests manufacturing is finally ramping up. Hopefully this also means deliveries of stock will be more frequent, and fans will, five months later, finally get their hands on the timepiece.

Eleven rolling planets hit the road for a European summer adventure!

Summer is the time for travel, adventure, festivals, and fun, and Swatch is taking a road trip that’s out of this world. Eleven MoonSwatch rolling planets will start their journey from the Swatch Global Headquarters in Biel, Switzerland, and tour Europe, stopping at must-see and unexpected destinations. Will there be a chance to buy the MoonSwatch from these rolling planets? Yes!!! Launched earlier this year, the Bioceramic MoonSwatch Collection pays tribute to the first watch on the moon, the OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch. Each of the eleven models references a different planet or celestial body within the solar system and encourages wearers to dream big, fly high, and explore the universe. We saw hundreds of new pieces. many were incredible. but when collectors look back at 2022, one watch collaboration will clearly stand out as the release that defined the year..

This has been a momentous year in watches. Tudor seemed to release a new classic every other month. Rolex went left-handed . AP celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Royal Oak with a brand-new Jumbo reference . Vacheron brought back the 222 . Patek revived the Nautilus .

These watches all have one thing in common: They are way more expensive than the one receiving our inaugural Watch of the Year award. Whereas our watch of the year – the MoonSwatch collaboration between Omega and Swatch – was meant for the masses. In the end it proved to be so popular that, months later, many would-be collectors are still waiting to plunk down their $260. But the global excitement around the release cannot be denied.

Fans camped out for it. Police showed up to control the crowds. For a brief moment, the most popular consumer product on Planet Earth was a wristwatch. As far as we're concerned, any watch that generates that kind of excitement is a good thing – especially when the watch in question draws its design cues from one of our all-time favorite models, the Omega Speedmaster, without which this publication literally would not exist .

The MoonSwatch was not just one of many choices for Watch of the Year.  It was the only choice – all 11 celestial missions' worth. It was the biggest release this year in basically every quantifiable metric, in addition to metrics we can't quantify. I'll put it this way: Its release almost broke Hodinkee's servers, generated the second-highest number of pageviews in Hodinkee history, and registered more than 1,100 comments on our introductory story – a record-breaking show of reader engagement.

We were obsessed with it. So were many of you. And years down the line, in the annals of horological history, its release will be studied as a genuine phenomenon. 

Just what is this thing we're crowning Watch of the Year? In short, it's a Swatch watch in Bioceramic that looks like an Omega Speedmaster. This was a collaboration, which is nothing new in the watch space, but the collaborators were two different watch brands – which is far from a normal occurrence.

The MoonSwatch takes an absolute icon, the Speedmaster, and translates its basic design DNA into an affordable Swatch package. It isn't an exact replica. Although the proportions and case shape are pretty much identical, it is sort of its own thing. The dial design has been augmented to make room for both brands' logos and the MoonSwatch wordmark. It's a sub-$300 Speedmaster that's meant purely to be fun.

And to make things even crazier, there are 11 editions made in all, each designed to reference to a celestial body. They go by names like "Mission on Earth" or "Mission to the Moon" (or, infamously, "Mission to Uranus"). Each watch comes on a velcro strap with more MoonSwatch branding.

So that's the watch that launched in March of this year and caused such pandemonium online.

But the watches alone didn't break the internet. Omega and Swatch decided to forgo e-commerce in favor of doing things the old-fashioned way: having eager buyers line up outside a Swatch store and praying they might pick one up. 

Hodinkee was on the ground on MoonSwatch launch day, dispatching photographers around the globe.

We here at Hodinkee could feel that this was a moment. And so we dispatched photographers across the globe to capture MoonSwatch Madness as it occurred at various Swatch locations from New York to Singapore. I made it a priority to head to Times Square to see those lines firsthand on launch day.

There were some "failure to launch" scenarios where large crowds prompted police to shut down lines and send folks home. Luckily for me, the crowd – the eight-city-blocks-long crowd – in Times Square was civil. Many waited overnight to get their mittens on a fresh MoonSwatch. Drop culture had officially hit the watch world in a meaningful way, and most of those in line weren't even clued into horological happenings. They were just there because it was cool…and relatively affordable. How they got the news, I don't know (I'll just assume they read my story).

After the first day, the watches sold out. They would be replenished, only we didn't know how and we didn't know when. We heard whispers that Swatch might eventually sell these online, in fact many commenters on this site railed against the line-sitters thinking that one day they might simply order one to their home. That day never came, unless you got tired of waiting and moonwalked over to eBay.

It's precisely this meeting of cultural impact and accessibility (from a pricing perspective) that has made this the Watch of the Year. It's not even worth noting a runner-up in this category because nothing comes close. I have friends who use their lunch breaks just to visit a Swatch store and see what they have in stock. The Hodinkee slack channel lights up every time someone scores a new planetary piece.

And the thing is, this has lasted for months and months. Swatch saw the growing demand and launched a program both stateside and abroad where cars filled with MoonSwatches went on tour to locations without a brick-and-mortar store, bringing the product to the people. Who could've imagined that, in the year 2022, a viable means of selling authentic watches would be out of the trunk of a car?

After I wrote the initial post for the MoonSwatch launch here on Hodinkee, I endeavored to follow up with a special version of A Week on the Wrist – more a short-form documentary on the mania surrounding this release than traditional review of the watch. I filmed that video two months after the launch and returned to Times Square to find that the enthusiasm had not wavered at all. In fact, we did interviews with passersby and almost every single person had heard of, or tried to purchase a MoonSwatch. And for the record, the Times Square shop was sold out that day.

Over the last seven or so months since that video launched, I have seen more and more people wearing the MoonSwatch around town both in Manhattan and in Brooklyn. And because I find this whole story so fascinating, I've started awkwardly pointing at collectors I see wearing one and saying "Hey! MoonSwatch!" (If you're one of the lucky few I've shouted those words to, please let me know). Sarah Miller gave me a side eye after witnessing one such moment in a New York dive bar a few months back. Sorry. Can't help it.

But honestly, the receptions I get are pretty remarkable. Sometimes it's just a "Yeah!" but other times it sparks a conversation. One time, I said the thing to a man in my neighborhood, and his significant other said to me, "He just got it today!"

Maybe I'm crossing social boundaries by engaging in this sort of shenaniganary, but it speaks to why we landed on this as Watch of the Year. It seems to be pervasive, its energy never wavering. Just the other day a colleague of mine called me to let me know he picked one up from a Swatch store while on vacation.

Of course, they are slowly becoming easier to get (depending on which store you go to), but the overall story of a watch released in March that still merits discussion in December is something we haven't seen in a long time.

And it's not like it wasn't without its controversies, which makes its selection in this category all the more deserved. Watch enthusiasts were concerned about how this would affect the Speedmaster line as a whole ( Logan Baker tackled that very story this month), or if a Bioceramic watch was worth the $260 asking price. In the end, this was a crossover cultural sensation (Just ask Malaika and Nora ), and we get so very few of those here in pedantic Watchlandia. 

Ladies and gentlemen, this is your Watch of the Year. 

And now, do tell me, which is your preferred planetary edition? I'm going with "Mission to Mars." And I'm heading into 2023 dreaming of the all releases that will blast off in the new year.

The MoonSwatch Is Now Way Easier to Buy in the USA

MoonSwatch-vending cars are touring the country, and retail locations are expanding.

The $260 Swatch x Omega Bioceramic MoonSwatch was so hyped it’s been hard to get, but there’s good news for its American fans. Starting Saturday, October 22, a fleet of cute little Fiat Cinquecento cars will tour the US to bring MoonSwatches to different cities, including areas previously inaccessible or inconvenient to retail locations. In addition, Swatch has announced that the MoonSwatch will now be available in all its stores (excluding the Broadway & Bleecker location in New York City).

Of course, there’s a twist, and Swatch had to make it “fun”: Following similar tours in Europe and Asia, these cars will simply show up in different cities, and you’ll have to be in the right place at the right time to pick up a MoonSwatch. While exact schedules of times and places where these mobile vending stations will roll up aren’t being announced, Swatch has disclosed some salient details.

There will be three cars covering three different US regions, and although each car is named after one of the MoonSwatch collection planets, a variety of MoonSwatch models will be available from each — on a first-come-first-served basis.

A red “Mission to Mars” car will begin in Miami, Florida, before visiting other cities, and Swatch has specified Boca Raton, Sarasota and Jacksonville. A yellow “Mission to the Sun” car will tour the Los Angeles, San Diego and Sacramento areas in California. And, finally, a blue Mission to Neptune car will serve “surprise locations” in the country expected to include the Midweest.

It might seem gimmicky, and it is, but it gives more people a chance to get one of these sought-after watches hopefully reaching them before they lose hope of getting one and while there’s still enthusiasm. In addition, it shows that Swatch really is trying to put a MoonSwatch on your wrist, having not only opened more retail locations , but now announcing that the MoonSwatch will be sold at more (it says almost “all”) Swatch stores where it was previously unavailable.

I think this should be "besides the Mission to the Moon" thread lol. And a poll would work well too. As for me, I like the Mission to Pluto (even though I know it's not that popular)  

I like that color combo!  

Soon as they are available online I’m gonna get a Mercury, bin the hideous strap and put it on a black leather.  

I've seen the straps selling for quite a bit, so don't bin it!  

Favorite color is Mission to Moon for obvious reasons. Planet is Uranus because I'm a child in a grown man's body.  

I think the most important question about the moonswatch is are people aware that if you start a thread, you only get one more post? If you thread is busy or not, it doesn't change anything for the OP.

Off-topic: Moon Zappa's father, Frank, was my English teacher in high school's high school English teacher's cousin. On-topic: Cloacal matters aside, Uranus is a really nice shade of deep blue, in my humble opinion. But since @King_Neptune has a better vantage point, I'll defer to him. Tell us, please, Your Majesty, how blue is Uranus? But seriously, folks ... do check out NASA's Artemis web pages . You'll see that the planned mission to the Moon has a wider purpose than simply having people walk there again. It's to lay the foundation for a regular series of missions that will develop the Moon as a base camp for exploring the other planets -- starting, of course, with Mars. The MoonSwatch's "Mission to ___" branding is clearly cognizant of that wider purpose, and portends bioceramic-watch marketing campaigns extending deep into the future. I wish I could be around for the (actual) Mission to Uranus, but, alas, mine (and yours -- but not Uranus) will be long gone by then.  

I think Pluto makes for a perfect MoonSwatch since it isn't a real planet, or is it?  

It’s a real dwarf planet thought it will forever be a planet for me. I belong to the 9 planets in the solar system camp.  

I own one of the damn things and I'm tired of reading/talking about it.  

I'm just happy to participate in another Moonswatch thread.  

I want them to make a Mission to the Center of the Earth. But in the absence of one dedicated to a giant, deep hole, I'll just go for Mission to Uranus.

I'll thow in another obvious vote for Uranus. Was there ever really a choice?

Mars and Jupiter for me, in that order. Alaska project is my favorite speedy, so I will absolutely someday have a Mars, and hopefully actually an Alaska to boot. Jupiter just looks cool to me in the matte monochrome with orange pops. Think it could be a strap monster. actually, Moon is the last one I’d get I think. It is definitely cool but it’s not “fun” to me in the same way as the others.  

Mission to Mercury is my fave. Dig Saturn, but wants to see it in the “bioceramic.” That rolls of the tongue, no? Also going to get the Uranus, just so I can tell folks I’m on a “missi…. You know the rest. I am a 57 yr old man child. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

First chance I get, I'm going for a Mission to Mars - I love the homage it pays (on several levels) to the Project Alaska Series.

There are "important questions" involving the Moonswatch? Totally surprised by that. I thought it was just a non-important watch that had some people going bonkers trying to explain how it is an Omega or it's not an Omega. Great! Where are the important questions?  

never really wanted a moon watch before now I might get one. With a hesalite crystal and manual wind and all the works. With a 321 movement? dont the Porsche Speedster and Omega Speedmaster fonts look so similar?

Update 1/26/24:

Breaking news, Swatch MoonSwatch fans: As GQ reported earlier this week , Omega and Swatch are adding a third party to the mix—a certain widely-beloved beagle with a penchant for howling at the moon. As of now, details are scarce on what the delightfully-dubbed MoonSnoopy will actually look like, but expect collectors of every stripe to go typically nuts for it. Like many of its counterparts in Japan, London, and, more recently, Cupertino , Omega has a long history with Charles Schulz's cartoon pup, which lends the surprise tie-up a specific type of logic.

Snoopy-themed Speedys “rank among the most popular Omega releases around,” GQ contributor Oren Hartov writes, “continually selling out despite their lofty retail prices and often going for big money on the secondary market.” His suggestion? Start lining up now: the mere prospect of a MoonSwatch x Snoopy mashup is enough to work the watch world into a tizzy.

If you don't live in any of the cities that stock the MoonSwatch, you can still shop previous models of the limited-edition collab on   eBay ,   StockX , or   Chrono24 .

Update 7/17/23:

If you've been searching high and low for a Swatch MoonSwatch, you might be in luck. Thanks to some in-depth research (calling nearly every MoonSwatch stockist in America) from GQ's own Cam Wolf, you can finally (probably) find the coveted limited edition watch in select retail stores right now. Despite its high demand, the MoonSwatch is still stocked in a few places. Currently, there are 16 stores in America, including four in New York City, that are sitting on product. The quantity may be low, but if you've been aiming to upgrade your wristwear, the time is now! 

Update 4/7/23: Lightening strikes twice on the Swatch MoonSwatch. After its initial launch last month, the limited-edition “Mission to Moonshine” collaboration is back with an even wider release adding 14 new in-store locations. Launching April 6, the Moonshine Gold model, which retails for $285, is now available in major cities around the globe including New York, Toronto, Madrid, Berlin, Seoul, Sydney, Rome and others. Like previous releases, this collab won't be available online.

Update 3/7/23: The Swatch MoonSwatch is officially back. Yesterday morning, Omega and Swatch announced a  newer, fancier version of their smash-hit collaboration, the limited-edition “Mission to Moonshine”, which updates the steel gray “Mission To The Moon” with a second hand coated in sleek gold alloy.

Like previous models, the latest MoonSwatch won't be available online, and its release is limited to London, Milan, Zürich, and Tokyo. It’ll cost you roughly $285 at retail, but good luck getting your hands on it.

This has been a banner year for watch collabs, from TAG Heuer x Porsche to Timex x Adsum to Hodinkee x Bamford x Snoopy , among many others. While some of these were a long time coming, others caught the global watch scene by surprise. None, however, caused as much excitement as the Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch , a first-of-its-kind partnership between two of the biggest names in watchmaking. The collection included 11 colorful variants of Swatch’s take on the NASA-approved Omega Speedmaster , each one dedicated to a different celestial body. Priced at $260 (some $6,000 less than Omega’s famed “Moonwatch”) and only available in-person at select Swatch boutiques, the collab attracted thousands of watch collectors and gray market flippers who lined up—sometimes days in advance—to cop one. Then things got a little wild. Shops were overwhelmed by the demand, riot police were called, and at least one guy got mugged for his spot in line at knifepoint .

Although the MoonSwatch wasn’t billed as limited-edition release, that didn’t stop eager buyers from reselling them for $1,000 a pop, an ironic (if predictable) fate for a watch ostensibly intended to offer Omega vibes at Swatch prices. And while the watch-collecting community mostly had good things to say about the design of the MoonSwatch, Swatch’s choice to roll out the watch in such limited quantities—and the rampant profiteering that it encouraged—rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

But if you have your heart set on a black-on-black Mission to Moon or a cotton-candy-pink Mission to Venus (or ambitions to collect the whole set, Pokémon style), things are looking up. A wider range of Swatch boutiques are carrying the collection IRL this season, and the brand recently announced a series of rolling pop-ups in cities like San Diego and Jacksonville, with surprise locations announced via Instagram in between. Elsewhere, gray market prices have also come back to earth for most models, and you can now find unworn options with original packaging for under $300 on sites like eBay, Chrono24, and StockX. (The one exception seems to be the blue Mission to Neptune edition—thanks to rumors that it’s going out of production, though Swatch assures us that isn’t the case, it continues to sell for upwards of $1,800.) Not to yuck anyone’s yum, or to take anything away from one of the most unusual watch drops of recent years, but with vintage Omega Speedmasters starting at around $1,500 on Chrono24 , there’s no planet on which that seems like a good deal.

So why not head over to the Swatch website and cop a Night Flight chronograph —a watch with much of the same midcentury appeal as the original Speedy—for just $210, or satisfy your fix with the NASA-endorsed EXTRAVEHICULAR ? Sure, they aren’t the MoonSwatch, but they are exactly the kind of fun, accessible watches that have made Swatch such a beloved brand for decades, and you won’t have to line up overnight (or pay an extortionary premium on the aftermarket) to get one.
