P.E.I.'s first cruise ship of the year marks early start to Island tourism season
Ship arrives in time for solar eclipse, as tourism association hoping for another strong season.
Social Sharing
The first cruise ship of the season sailed into Charlottetown Harbour on Monday morning, ahead of the total solar eclipse, though some tourist shops along the waterfront remained closed.
The MSC Poesia, which arrived around 8 a.m., is scheduled to depart at 5 p.m.
It can carry more than 3,000 passengers and nearly 1,000 crew members. It's roughly two and a half weeks earlier than last year's first port call.
Nellies and Reggies souvenir and gift shop was one of the few stores at Peakes Quay open for business Monday.

Owner Nellie Murray said she took advantage of the nice weather to take the plywood off the windows and start sales for the season. She said she usually can't find staff until May.
"I'm just going to work around today at getting things ready for the season," she said.
Murray said sales have improved year-over-year since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and she's hoping that trend continues this season.
"I'm finding more and more people are wanting to travel and get out of where they are just for a change, even in the Maritimes," she said.
Corryn Clemence, CEO of the Tourism Industry Association of P.E.I., said while there won't be as many conventions and other events as last year, operators are hoping for a strong year for both golf and leisure.
"There's I think four big fish conventions coming in," she said, each bringing at least 400 delegates starting in May. "We have a lot of great festivals and events that are taking place this year, some that are happening standard in the summer season, but some ... into the fall."
Clemence said a strong tourism season is good news for the Island, even though some may complain about the extra traffic and people.
"As Islanders, maybe sometimes we take it for granted," she said. "But the tax revenues that are generated by our industry help to support so many other areas within government ... education, health care, all of these roadways and infrastructures."
Two more cruise ships are scheduled to arrive in Charlottetown this month: the Viking Polaris on April 25, and the Volendam four days later.
In total, 96 cruise ships are scheduled to visit Charlottetown this year.
The busiest day is expected to be Oct. 1, when the harbour will see four ships docked at the same time.

Cruise ship season begins in Juneau
The Norwegian Bliss docked in Juneau Tuesday morning, marking the start of the 2024 cruise ship season.
Jade Wang and Minhui Li set up their tripod to take a selfie in front of the “Welcome to Juneau” sign on the seawalk. They came from New York. Through a translation device, they said in Chinese that they think the snow on the mountains is beautiful.
“Wǒ huì tuījiàn zǔguó de péngyǒu lái — I would recommend my friends from the Motherland to come here,” Li said.
Another couple, Jean and Rob Hands, said they came all the way from Scotland to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in Alaska.
“We always talked about coming to Alaska, so it was one of those last-minute decisions ‘Let’s see if we can go,’” Jean Hands said. “Probably if we’d come later, we might have seen more of the wildlife.”
Rob Hands said he sees similarities between the tourism in Juneau and back home in Scotland.
“We get loads and loads of visitors. The roads become full of campers and caravans, and you can’t get a place for bed and breakfast unless you book ahead,” he said. “And, you know, it is busy but does well for the economy. So that’s a great thing.”
More than 1.6 million passengers are expected to arrive in Juneau from now until late October, when the season ends. On Tuesday morning, a steady stream of tourists walked down the seawalk and into stores downtown.
The familiar smell of grilled chicken filled the air from Bernadette’s barbecue stand, near Marine Park. Robert De La Cruz said he’d prepared 200 chicken skewers for the opening day, and he hoped they’d all get eaten by the time the ship left.
“Hopefully, we sell them — as long as it’s not windy and rainy, that’s my fear. When it’s windy and rainy, people don’t get out,” he said. “It’s fun, I’m getting excited this year.”
Brandy Riggs, with Juneau Tours and Whale Watch, stood at a booth along the seawalk. She said visitors had been buying tours to the Mendenhall Glacier and for whale-watching trips throughout the morning.
“There’s no guarantee that you’re gonna see whales — but we’re definitely offering it still,” she said. “We’ve got some glacier trips going on, and here in the next couple of weeks, we’ll have some city tours going on as well.”
Down Franklin Street, Gary’s Fine Jewelry was also welcoming customers. Owner Gary Totwani keeps the store open year-round, and he said he’s happy to see the tourism season start.
“A lot of people are happy — locals and the people who work for the local stores, they’re happy also,” he said. “So far, so good. I’m excited to welcome the ship, and we’re ready.”
The next ship will arrive in a week.
Katie Anastas contributed reporting.

Norwegian cancels more than a dozen cruises on 7 ships in 2025
Norwegian Cruise Line canceled more than a dozen cruises on seven ships.
The sailings were scheduled to take place in 2025. The changes “are a result of varied events including the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and Israel, modified dry dock schedules for ship enhancements, a full ship charter, and lastly, to accommodate the demand for shorter close-to-home voyages to the Bahamas,” according to a spokesperson for the line.
The following itineraries were canceled:

“We are committed to providing exceptional vacation experiences, both aboard our ships and by taking our guests to some of the most sought-out destinations around the world,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “While we try to maintain original itineraries as much as possible, at times modifications are made to optimize the itinerary, enhance the guest experience or accommodate certain circumstances.”
Your cruise was canceled: Now what?
Guests whose cruises were impacted were given full refunds of their fare and a 10% discount in the form of a future cruise credit. The credit can be used on any of Norwegian’s published itineraries through Dec. 31, 2025.

Suspect arrested after going into women’s locker room, charged with indecent exposure
GASTONIA, N.C. — Christopher Allan Miller, 38, was arrested after going into the women’s locker room Thursday at the Gastonia Planet Fitness on South New Hope Road.
Planet Fitness allows members to use the restroom and locker rooms they identify with as part of their no-judgmental motto. However, some members said they are worried and believe Miller misused the policy after hearing the allegations and the call for help.
Women at Planet Fitness were stunned last week to see Miller in the women’s locker room. One woman called 911.
“And what’s he wearing?” the dispatcher said.
“Nothing, literally nothing,” the caller said.
“OK, so he is completely naked?” the dispatcher said.
“He is completely naked,” the caller said.
Christopher Allan Miller
Sources told Channel 9 that Miller asked a woman to rub lotion and shower together.
“And is that man still there?” the dispatcher said.
“Yeah, he is still in the bathroom,” the caller said. “It’s a man but he says he identifies as a woman, and he won’t leave the restroom. But he is just walking around showing us his --- and he won’t leave.”
Miller was harassing women in the gym before the arrest, sources told Channel 9.
Member Betty Brice is upset that Miller reportedly claimed to identify as a woman as a reason to stay in the ladies’ locker room.
“I think a woman should be able to go into a woman’s bathroom without a man coming in saying he’s transgender,” Brice said.
Clark Simon, the former president of Charlotte Pride, said Planet Fitness’ inclusivity policy was made so that transgender people feel welcome, too.
“When you do that you, create a sense of safety, security, and affirmation for them to be able to do the things that everybody else is able to do,” he said.
But Simon told Channel 9 that is no excuse for someone who is not transgender to violate that space. Simon believes Planet Fitness must control that.
Miller is in jail charged with indecent exposure to a minor.
Without talking to Miller, there’s no way for Channel 9 to know whether Miller truly is transgender.
Planet Fitness’ policy states that members are allowed to use locker rooms based on their self-reported gender identity.
There is no indication that Miller self-reported before this incident.
A spokesperson for Planet Fitness told Channel 9 its employees took immediate action to ensure the safety of members and officials are working with law enforcement.
The spokesperson said they have zero tolerance for harassment of any kind.
Policy: Subject to Section Three above, all members and team members may use Planet Fitness locker room facilities and programs based on their self-reported gender identity; these facilities include bathrooms, showers, and all other facilities separated by sex. Wherever possible, Planet Fitness clubs should maintain private changing areas in each locker room for the comfort of all members and team members. Where applicable, gender-neutral bathrooms may also be made available as needed for the privacy and comfort of members and team members. Use of a gender-neutral bathroom is voluntary.
