WASHINGTON (Oct. 26, 2022) – As travel continues to make a roaring return in 2022, National Geographic today unveils its annual list of the 25 inspiring destinations for the renewed travel landscape to help individuals get a jump on planning for the year ahead.

For 2023, Nat Geo’s “ Best of the World ” is themed around travel destinations and experiences that leverage the benefits of tourism to strengthen their local communities and environments, both natural and built.

Nat Geo’s “Best of the World” list for the year ahead celebrates destinations and travel experiences that illuminate our beautiful world and the diversity of communities and people within it, grouped by category: Family, Adventure, Culture, Nature.

New this year, however, is a Community category, designed to be inclusive of healing and heritage journeys, community-led conservation efforts, ways for travelers to give back, and locations doing groundbreaking work in eco-tourism, sustainability and inclusive travel. The goal is to spotlight destinations where people make places better for locals, the environment and visitors, and to showcase homegrown, rooted, locally relevant and engaged places to visit.

In total, the 2023 list honors educational journeys for all generations ( Family ); exciting activities in breathtaking places ( Adventure ); explorations of history and heritage ( Culture ); escapes to wild, beautiful places ( Nature ); and healing journeys, community conservation, giving back, sustainable places and more ( Community ).

“We have experienced so many changes and disruptions in the way we explore over the last few years, so with this year’s list, we really wanted to get back to identifying positive stories about destinations and communities,” said Amy Alipio, senior editor at National Geographic Travel. “With our team of travel experts and editors, we took a deeper dive into places all over the globe that are providing experiences that are unique and beneficial for both locals and travelers: locations where visitors ultimately sustain and support—not damage—the destination’s environment and community. We also worked hard to provide lesser-known gems on the list, equally inspiring alternatives to destinations that have become overcrowded (think Choquequirao vs. Machu Picchu in Peru).”

“Best of the World’ is Nat Geo’s annual love letter to the most incredible places in the world, both near and far,” said Nathan Lump, National Geographic’s Editor-in-Chief. “We couldn’t be prouder to shine a light on these 25 extraordinary places that most inspired us this year, and which we know will define travelers’ itineraries for years to come. From craft breweries and Asia’s top film festival in Busan, South Korea, to women-led Indigenous tourism in Alberta, Canada, and the densest leatherback turtle nesting ground in the world in Trinidad and Tobago, this year’s list reminds us that there is still so much out there to explore and experience.”

The list was created, researched, reported and written in collaboration with National Geographic Traveler ’s international editorial teams, which serve millions of readers through their magazines and websites in more than a dozen offices around the world.

The “Best of the World 2023” list is available online now at NatGeo.com/BestOfTheWorld , where readers will be transported to each destination through spectacular photography and reporting.

National Geographic has unveiled its annual list of the 25 inspiring destinations for 2023. Nat Geo’s “Best of the World,” is themed around five categories: Family, Adventure, Culture, Nature, and new this year, Community.

“We have experienced so many changes and disruptions in the way we explore over the last few years, so with this year’s list, we really wanted to get back to identifying positive stories about destinations and communities,” said Amy Alipio, senior editor at National Geographic Travel.

“With our team of travel experts and editors, we took a deeper dive into places all over the globe that are providing experiences that are unique and beneficial for both locals and travelers: locations where visitors ultimately sustain and support — not damage — the destination’s environment and community. We also worked hard to provide lesser-known gems on the list, equally inspiring alternatives to destinations that have become overcrowded (think Choquequirao vs. Machu Picchu in Peru).”

Here is National Geographic’s “ Best of the World ” list for 2023.

Luxor Temple in Egypt

These five destinations were chosen because Nat Geo says they allow you to immerse yourself in history and heritage.

  • Appian Way, Italy: Rome’s “Gateway to the East” is known as Europe’s ancient “superhighway.” It was selected for its ability to take you on a trip through history.
  • Busan, South Korea: As the nation’s second largest city, it’s known for its beaches, mountains, and temples.
  • Charleston, South Carolina : With its cobblestone streets and Low Country Cuisine, this city allows you to explore culture and history.
  • Egypt: Home to King Tut’s new home at Cairo’s Grand Egyptian Museum and Luxor’s Avenue of the Sphinxes, this country that links northeast Africa to the Middle East dates back to the time of the pharaohs.
  • Longmen Grottoes, Henan Province, China: This is one of the world’s largest collections of Chinese art of the late Northern Wei and Tang Dynasties, made up of 2,300 caves, almost 110,000 Buddhist stone statues, and more.

Eilean Donan Castle, Scotland

Described by Nat Geo as “wildly underrated,” these five destinations will spark a new appreciation for our planet.

  • Scottish Highlands : This mountain region in northwest Scotland has incredible scenery and is praised for its movement to restore the original landscape.
  • Botswana : Located in Southern Africa, this landlocked country is home to several notable animal species like giraffes, cheetahs, and hyenas and is selected for its programs to rehabilitate the species that are endangered.
  • Slovenia : This central European country is known for its mountains, ski resorts, and lakes and was selected for this category for being a longtime leader in sustainable tourism.
  • Big Bend National Park : This park located in southern Texas was chosen because of its surprising landscape.
  • Azores : This is an island region in Portugal known for nature and sustainability, which is why it was selected.

Canyonlands National Park in Utah

These five destinations are chosen by Nat Geo because they’re for those looking for adrenaline-pumping adventure.

  • New Zealand : If you’re looking for a post-pandemic adrenaline rush, you’ll be interested in this country known for adventure; after all, it did invent bungee jumping.
  • Choquequirao, Peru : This Incan site in southern Peru may not be well-known, but it will remind you of the architecture of Machu Picchu.
  • Utah : This landlocked state out west may be known for skiing, but was chosen for this category for the adrenaline rush you can get from the less visited parts.
  • Revillagigedo National Park, Mexico : Known as the “Galápagos of Mexico,” was selected because it holds one of the largest aggregations of sharks and manta rays in the world and is an iconic dive destination.
  • Austria : Located in the southern part of Central Europe, it’s known for castles and palaces, but is becoming more popular for cross-country hikes to sample local culture.

Pha That Luang in Laos

Chosen for being forward-thinking, these five destinations were selected by Nat Geo because they offer opportunities for meaningful travel.

  • Dodecanese Islands, Greece: This is a group of 15 large and 150 small Greek Islands, chosen for this category because there are women-led ventures and sustainable tourism.
  • Milwaukee, Wisconsin : This Great Lakes city is known for its celebration of breweries but was selected because it is becoming known for how it celebrates its culture.
  • Alberta, Canada : This is home to Banff National Park and iconic Lake Louise. The traditional countryside and contemporary perspectives come together here.
  • Laos : Located in southeast Asia, French colonial architecture, hill tribe settlements, and Buddhist monasteries come together here. Chosen for this category because of a new high-speed train that makes lesser-known regions more accessible to tourists and locals.
  • Ghana: This country in West Africa is becoming known for its fashion-forward capital, Accra.

Cartagena, Colombia

Chosen to “inspire the whole family in 2023,” these five destinations are family trips that Nat Geo says will help educate and illuminate.

  • Trinidad and Tobago: As the southernmost island country in the Caribbean, it’s known for beaches and nature. Because of that, it was chosen for its work saving turtles at one of the most important leatherback turtle rookeries in the world.
  • San Francisco, California : You’re probably thinking of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and steep streets, but it was chosen for other activities like Presidio Tunnel campfires and hiking the Crosstown Trail.
  • Colombia : Disney’s Encanto brought this country to a whole new audience. Enjoy the story while also birdwatching in this “avian paradise” of South America.
  • Manchester, England: With a rich industrial heritage, this city mixes history with sports as it’s home to Manchester United.
  • Switzerland : Take a train ride through this country famous for the Alps and chocolate. Take in hiking and skiing as you visit its quaint towns.

With the publication of its annual Best Trips list, National Geographic announces the 25 must-see destinations and travel experiences for 2020. Within the list, 17 of the 25 destinations were nominated, researched, reported, and written in collaboration with National Geographic Traveler magazine’s 17 international editorial teams. Philadelphia was selected in the City category.

With a goal to bring readers a global itinerary of destinations to discover and transformative experiences to seek in the new year, the list champions National Geographic’s sustainable tourism goals, which include supporting cultural engagement, community benefit, geographic and thematic diversity, affordability and value. The list is organized into four general categories: Culture, City, Nature, and Adventure.

“Best Trips is our annual list of where to go, what to know and how to see the world in the year ahead,” says George Stone, Executive Editor, Travel. “The list features 25 timely and global destinations and experiences that make for a year of transformative travels. To build the list we worked with National Geographic editors around the world as well as photographers, writers, explorers and, of course, passionate travelers to report on the essential sites to see and places to be in 2020.”

“We’re thrilled that Philadelphia is featured so prominently and beautifully in this influential publication that we know drives travel decisions,” said Jeff Guaracino, VISIT PHILADELPHIA ® president and CEO. “In 2005, National Geographic Traveler called Philadelphia the ‘Next Great City’. It’s awesome to see that more than a decade later, they’re still enamored of and advocates for our historic, modern and always-evolving town.”

Traveller Testimonials

Get an idea of what your adventure could be like from people who have enjoyed their travels with National Geographic Journeys.

I learnt so much about Costa Rica, its history, flora and fauna. I have some amazing memories and have made some firm friends from the tour. It was excellent and, as a result, I know I will be going back to Costa Rica in the future!

Jayenne C., Explore Costa Rica

It was a wonderful experience that I have already recommended to several friends. The accommodations were great and well located. Yoko was a well-organized, helpful and knowledgeable guide.

Patricia S., Iconic Japan

AMAZING! From being able to try such a variety of experiences, learning the culture and history to meeting NOW everlasting newer friendships from this vacation. This is by far one of the best, and most enriching vacations I have ever had—for both my husband and I.

Maria L., Explore Machu Picchu

Absolutely fabulous! This was the best vacation we have ever had in that we were part of a small group of people who all love the outdoors, learning and experiencing new places, foods, culture, and best of all, people! Our CEO was fantastic! He shared so much of his beautiful homeland with us through visits to hidden gems, meeting local people, sharing time and culture with the unique and lovely people of New Zealand. We hiked, we ate, we heard, we saw, we felt, and we laughed and hugged a lot! We left a piece of our hearts in New Zealand. What we took away from all this is a lifetime of fantastic memories.

Virginia D., New Zealand Journey

This trip totally exceeded my expectations. Our CEO, Moses, and driver, Edward, were both excellent and really made the adventure everything it was. They worked really well together and were really friendly, informative and enthusiastic. The wildlife itself was superb, better than I had hoped and because of the guys' enthusiasm I found myself interested in far more than just the bigger animals. The standard of accommodation and food was excellent and I really enjoyed all the activities included in the tour. The tour felt totally authentic, and it really felt like people were welcoming of us on the basis of the positive work done in the community.

Caroline D., Tanzania Safari Experience

This trip was truly an adventure worth taking. In one short week, I came face-to-face with 13 gorillas, sprinted through a forest in pursuit of chimpanzees, watched a mother hippo protectively shield her baby from our view, and listened to a pride of lions devour a buffalo carcass at sunset. Experiences like these provide lifelong memories, and as an added bonus, I made new lifelong friends as well. After planning this trip for over a year, the experience itself lived up to — and surpassed — my expectations in so many ways.

Kelley G., Rwanda & Uganda Gorilla Discovery

Great trip. I was especially happy with the National Geographic exclusives. The food we got at the Parwa Community Restaurant was one of the best we enjoyed in Peru. The visit to Parwue de la Papa was enlightening and enjoyable. The same can be said of the visits we did at Lake Titicaca — the Floating island, the Taquile Island visit and lunch hosted by the village on Luquina Peninsular. It is especially heartening and fulfilling to know that [the company] is actively contributing to the local community in helping these villages help themselves in a sustainable manner.

Wern L.C., Inca Explorer

This tour exceeded my expectations on pretty much all fronts. I was able to get pushed out of my comfort zone just enough by being in a place where the customs were different and I didn't speak the language, but at the same time I always felt safe. We were able to see the "real" Morocco in a way that other tours wouldn't have done.

Amanda R., Morocco: Sahara & Beyond

This trip was awesome. The cities, architecture, interiors, food and people were a photographer's dream. I've been to Spain before (Madrid and Barcelona), but Andalusia is truly special. The entire itinerary was great, and the exclusive experiences provided lots of insights into the destination. When I first read about learning to dance flamenco, I didn't think it would be a highlight, but it was so much fun and really made me appreciate the history, talent of the dancers and the show even more. I want to go back!

I love my job as a Journeys CEO for five reasons: 1. I get to meet new people I love meeting others and hearing their stories. It's so cool seeing their eyes light up while telling me what they're passionate about. 2. I get to talk about my favourite place Talking about your home , your family, and your friends — it's literally the best thing ever. Getting to share that sense of happiness and peace is the coolest thing.

I love leading National Geographic Journeys trips because you get to take your experience to another level that even I myself couldn’t dream up. One of my favorite parts of leading trips in North America is when I take people to the Grand Canyon. I get to experience their first sighting of the amazing layers and shear natural beauty that exists in the Wild West of Arizona.

It’s such a diverse continent I come from. And taking travelers through it is mind and soul enriching. Whether it’s traversing through the oldest desert in the world, the Namib, walking through the jungle of the Okavango delta, the largest inland delta in the world, watching hundreds of elephants drinking in Hwange National Park, or putting the icing on the cake by showing our amazingly rich culture.

There was a moment in Florence last summer when I was standing there with my group next to the iconic Ponte Vecchio after showing them around the beautiful city. I started talking about the second World War in Italy and Florence specifically. Then I pulled out a piece of paper and started reading: "Our pockets were filled with odd scraps of paper on which were written the names of the sons and daughters and relatives in America to whom we had promised to write that we had seen mother or uncle or cousin in Florence

“Even if it doesn’t smell good, jasmine is still jasmine. Even if he isn’t elegant, a Hanoian is still a Hanoian.” My father used to recite this poem to me when I was a little boy. I will never forget what he told me about Hanoi because since I moved to this city, Hanoi simply became my second home. As a local who loves food, cultures, and meeting people, I see that many tourists are now stuck in the touristy area, which doesn't make them "really travel" to Hanoi, Vietnam. So I love getting opportunities to show people "The Real Hanoi."

I love leading National Geographic Journeys trips because I get to spend time with like-minded people that just love anything to do with nature. I get excited every time I see the joy in our travellers’ faces when they see their dream become a reality. Many times, people on our trips have been waiting their whole lives to come to Africa to see our beautiful land and creatures. For me it is a privilege to show them all that I can in the time I have with them. I want them to leave with a little piece of Africa in their hearts forever.

I get to walk around my favorite place for hours When you're having a rough day, a nice walk in Petra talking about how much you love its beauty is a good way to lift your mood. 5. I make a huge impact in people's lives Every tour I do, every person I meet, is an opportunity to change their life by bringing happiness and friendship forever.

And then we all go behind the scenes and have a local expert explain the history and the detail that goes into the magnificent wonder of the world. I get excited each time we get to have a unique opportunity to speak to someone who studies the background and unique details that accompany our amazing National Geographic Journeys destinations.

Sharing all this, sitting around a campfire with a beautiful night sky above us, I love to bring some of the stories travelers read into life by simply sharing all this with them.

There was a moment in Florence last summer when I was standing there with my group next to the iconic Ponte Vecchio after showing them around the beautiful city. I started talking about the second World War in Italy and Florence specifically. Then I pulled out a piece of paper and started reading: "Our pockets were filled with odd scraps of paper on which were written the names of the sons and daughters and relatives in America to whom we had promised to write that we had seen mother or uncle or cousin in Florence, that all was well, and that they were full of courage. One woman came up to us with a shy 16-year-old daughter and told us in English that she had waited to speak to the first Americans in Florence. She turned to the daughter and took two almost wilted roses and handed them to us. We have been looking for Americans to give these to, and you are the first. We are happy now." This is taken from a National Geographic published in March 1945. The words were followed by a moment of deep emotion felt by the group. For a second, it felt like we connected with those who were fighting to free the country more than 70 years ago. Moments like these are the main reason why I love leading National Geographic Journeys tours.

So I love getting opportunities to show people "The Real Hanoi." I like to take people to secret corners, small alleys, beautiful places, local street food places where they can take photos with real life styles of Hanoian, taste amazing local foods, or simply do Taichi or exercise with local people in the early morning. I'm proud to be a part of this beautiful city and I love having a chance to show people the real Hanoi.

I love leading National Geographic Journeys trips because I get to spend time with like-minded people that just love anything to do with nature. I get excited every time I see the joy in our travellers’ faces when they see their dream become a reality. For me it is a privilege to show them all that I can in the time I have with them. I want them to leave with a little piece of Africa in their hearts forever. Changing people's lives and showing them the importance and interconnectedness of nature brings me joy. A bit deep, maybe, but I do love what I do.

Experience the Ultimate Eco-Tourism Trip With National Geographic Expeditions

H ave you ever found yourself feeling envious of the National Geographic experts you see featured in fascinating television documentaries, who are out in the field, witnessing the astonishing aspects of Mother Nature’s many wonders firsthand?

Maybe you missed your calling to train as an ecologist, or you’re just generally fascinated by wildlife, or you have a soft spot for the environment and its animal inhabitants, so many of whom are endangered by human interference. You might simply be someone who appreciates any opportunity to acquire new knowledge and gain an in-depth understanding of the unique places you visit.

If you fall into any of the above categories, you need to look into National Geographic Expeditions , a group tour company that operates in partnership with Disney Signature Experiences . These trips benefit from all of the vacation-planning capability, customer service acumen, and overall integrity that its affiliations with both the National Geographic Society and the Disney name imply.

Vacation company  Adventures by Disney  likewise falls under the Disney Signature Experiences umbrella, but—whereas Adventures by Disney’s primary focus is on offering family-friendly trips and activities—National Geographic Expeditions' purpose is to provide up-close, in-depth experiences that offer an “education come to life”, catering to guests who want to expand their knowledge and tap into their inner explorer.

Discovering the Wonders of Costa Rica

I was recently fortunate enough to experience a brand-new National Geographic Expeditions itinerary that is right up my alley. Just introduced this year, ‘ Costa Rica: Wildlife and Conservation ’ is an immersive 12-day trek that starts in the capital city of San José on the Caribbean side of the country’s central mountains and wends gradually westward, all the way to the mangrove forests and sandy beaches of the country’s Pacific coast.

Even though the itinerary is considered a soft adventure tour, involving light to moderate activity levels, I was surprised how much this immersive NatGeo Expeditions trip really feels like you’re stepping right into a nature documentary featuring some of the world’s most fascinating, rare and exotic wild species. Not only are you seeing strange, almost unbelievable natural wonders with your own eyes, you also get insider access to the locations you’re visiting along the way, often going behind the scenes for special demonstrations or hands-on experiences.

The trip feels less like a sporadic series of “must-see” spots and more like a shared deep-dive investigation into the details of your destination, one in which group members all participate in putting together the pieces of what they learn and observe at each successive stop along the way until a complete picture emerges.

What Is a NatGeo Expeditions Trip Like?

Facilitating your collective discoveries is a seasoned Expedition Leader, who travels alongside your group and participates in your activities throughout the entire journey. On top of that, each individual expedition is also joined by a National Geographic Expert (in our case, a celebrated NatGeo Explorer and wildlife conservation photographer), who is assigned to your group, illuminating various detailed aspects of your experience along the way.

Our Expedition Leader’s profound depth of knowledge and field experience practically defied belief. Being both a native Costa Rican and skilled naturalist, he possessed a thorough and intimate understanding of every single creature we encountered along the way—from ants to bats, lizards to sloths, birds to crocodiles and beyond—including their habitats, lifecycles and behavioral nuances.

Not only could he accurately identify hundreds of species of native birds solely by ear (bear in mind, every avian species has a whole repertoire of calls and songs), but he could also spot even intensely camouflaged animals at unbelievable distances, and would swiftly set up a tripod telescope so that everyone could get a glimpse.

On any National Geographic Expeditions itinerary, there are also local subject matter experts on hand at each scheduled location to provide insight into the specifics of the site. These might be scientists, researchers, conservation workers, park rangers, tour guides, farmers or local business owners.

Essentially, you have a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips the entire time, and inquiring minds are both encouraged and appreciated. The particular focus of your trip is also these experts’ passion, so you never get the sense that you’re bothering anyone with your barrage of questions.

While our days held plenty of outdoor exploration, luckily for me, National Geographic Expeditions guests don’t need to sacrifice the creature comforts you look forward to on vacation. Travelers enjoy overnight stays at a sequence of high-end hotels and luxury lodges, all meals are planned and provided (and the food is incredible), with plenty of opportunities to stop at local cafés as you make your way to featured sites in a top-of-the-line motorcoach.

Honestly, they’ve thought of everything, since itineraries are created by a dedicated set of location scouts whose job it is to explore the destination and incorporate the best elements of what they find there.

Are You the NatGeo Expeditions Type?

Anyone can live out their National Geographic-style dreams. All it takes is a desire to discover your own inner explorer, satisfy you thirst for knowledge and a desire to give something back to your chosen destination.

If you’re the type of traveler whose idea of an amazing vacation revolves solely around the prospect of sunning yourself at a beach resort with a margarita in hand, you may wish to keep shopping around for inspiration for your next trip.

But, if you’re more interested in pursuing your passion for experiential learning, enriching your understanding of the world around you and satiating your innate curiosity, National Geographic Expeditions trips are just your style. Itineraries are available in destinations all around the world that cater to a wide range of interests, and vary in terms of duration and physical activity levels.

Plus, with every National Geographic Expeditions adventure, guests are giving back and making a difference in the destination they’ve just discovered. A portion of your trip’s price is donated to the National Geographic Society or to local groups to further fund their admirable endeavors on behalf of humanity.

The best packing cubes to save space and keep you organized

These travel cubes will keep your suitcase in order, whether you’re going on a short getaway or a round-the-world adventure.

Whether you’re packing for a weekend getaway or planning an around-the-world adventure, packing cubes can help streamline the packing process. Packing cubes are bags that come in different sizes in a set. They can help organize clothing and save room in your suitcase. Frequent traveler Kayli King uses packing bags daily to keep clothes organized in her van while traveling. “Honestly, after traveling so long, I can’t imagine not using them,” she says.

After talking to King, we compared packing bags, looking for durable travel cubes with functional designs and a wide variety of sizes. Our top overall pick is the Gonex Compression Packing Cubes. Compression zippers, handles, and a low price tag make this set the best all around.

Our picks for the best packing cubes for travel

The best packing cubes for travel, best overall: gonex compression packing cubes.

national geographic best trips

Buy it now on   Amazon

Why we like it:   The Gonex Compression Packing Cubes are our choice for the best overall packing cubes. Despite being one of the more affordable travel cube sets on this list, these compression bags have plenty of features, including ripstop nylon, reinforced seams, and handles. They compress via double zippers that pull the edges of the travel packing bag together. The packing cubes can hold everything from socks to jackets and are designed to fit together like puzzle pieces. They’re also available in over 10 colors.

Keep in mind:   These packing cubes unzip only halfway, so you have to stuff your clothes inside rather than lay them flat. Some reviewers note that the compression zippers are difficult for people with arthritis or reduced mobility.

Product details: Size: 4-piece set: 9.8 x 7.5 x 3.54 inches (small), 11.8 x 8.9 x 3.54 inches (medium), 14.5 x 10.6 x 3.54 inches (large), and 17.3 x 13 x 3.54 inches (extra large) | Material:   Ripstop nylon | Weight: 12 ounces (set)

Best for traveling light: Eagle Creek Pack-It Isolate Cube Set

national geographic best trips

Buy it now at   Backcountry

Why we like it: At 4.2 ounces, the Eagle Creek Pack-It Isolate Cube Set is half the weight of other packing cubes on this list, but they’re far from flimsy. They’re made of ripstop polyester and have “self-repairing” zippers—if a gap opens in the chain, you can slide one of the zippers over it to close it. Eagle Creek also offers a warranty that covers fabric tears and zippers. Because they’re lightweight and sturdy, these travel cubes are great for hikers and campers who want to organize their backpacks.

Keep in mind: The set includes only three smaller-sized travel cubes. While great for backpacks and carry-ons, you may want bigger packing cubes for checked luggage.

Product details: Size:   3-piece set: 4.5 x 7.5 x 2.5 inches (extra small), 7.25 x 10 x 3.25 inches (small), and 10 x 14.25 x 3.25 inches (medium) | Material:   Ripstop polyester | Weight:   4.2 ounces (set)

Best for overpackers: REI Co-op Expandable Packing Cube Set

national geographic best trips

Buy it now at   REI

Why we like it:   The packing cubes in the REI Co-op Expandable Packing Cube Set are the opposite of compression bags. Each cube has a second zipper that, when unzipped, increases its width to six inches—double the size of other packing bags on this list. They’re designed to last with ripstop polyester treated with a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish. The packing cubes also meet the Bluesign criteria, the highest environmental standard for sustainable textile manufacturing.

Keep in mind:   REI Co-op recently updated its packing cubes, and some buyers believe the quality has suffered as a result. Third-party reviews mention thin material, unreinforced zippers, and mesh that snags.

Product details: Size:   3-piece set: 8 x 6 x 3 inches (small), 12 x 8 x 3 inches (medium), and 14.5 x 10.5 x 3 inches (large) | Material:   Ripstop nylon, polyester mesh | Weight: 8.3 ounce (set)

Best upcycled option: Cotopaxi Cubo Packing Cube Bundle

national geographic best trips

Why we like it:   The brightly colored Cotopaxi Cubo Packing Cube Bundle is an upcycled option you can feel good about. The packing bags are made of 100-percent repurposed nylon and mesh. Kayli King likes that the mesh panels allow your things to air out and that you can hang them up by their handles.

Cotopaxi’s sustainability initiatives extend beyond its packing cubes. The company says that 94 percent of its products use repurposed, recycled, or responsible materials. They also offer programs to repair items and trade them in to avoid landfills.

Keep in mind:   Despite its competitive price, this bundle comes with only three packing cubes. The size range is small compared to other packing cube sets. However, King prefers this set for longer trips.

Product details: Size: 3-piece set: 7 x 8 x 2 inches (2-liter bag), 6 x 11.5 x 3 inches (3-liter bag), 10 x 11.5 x 5 inches (10-liter bag) | Material:   100 percent repurposed nylon and mesh | Weight: 9 ounces (set)

Best style: Calpak Packing Cubes Set

national geographic best trips

Buy it now at   Calpak

Why we like it:   While many packing cubes seem to favor function over fashion, the Calpak Packing Cubes Set balances both. The packing bags come in over 20 colors, with patterns like “cheetah” and “lime viper.” They’re durable, with thick polyester sides and mesh covers that let you see inside. Each packing cube has a zippered pocket for smaller essentials and an ID tag to write down the contents. If five travel cubes aren’t enough, you can buy additional Calpak travel organizers, like shoe bags and laptop totes.

Keep in mind:   The Calpak Packing Cube set is by far the heaviest and most expensive option on this list. You may want lighter packing cubes if you travel with just a carry-on or are concerned about overweight luggage.

Product details: Size:   5-piece set: 13 x 10 x 1.5 inches (envelope), 12 x 8.8 x 3 inches (small x 2), 5 x 11 x 3 inches (medium), 17 x 12 x 3 inches (large) | Material: Polyester and mesh | Weight: 1 pound, 12.8 ounces (set)

Best set: Tripped Checked Bag Set

national geographic best trips

Why we like it:   The Tripped Checked Bag Set has a travel cube for almost every packing need. The set includes seven packing bags, including two extra large sizes, a slim cube, a shoe bag, and a roll-top laundry bag. Mix and match the travel cubes to fit your suitcase and packing needs. Most of the packing cubes in the Checked Bag Set also have a compression feature. Plus, they come in a wide range of colors and an illustrated set featuring national parks.

Keep in mind:   While the packing cubes are made from a ripstop blend, reviewers mention that the material and stitching feel thin and flimsy. Some of the travel cubes don’t unzip all the way, making packing more difficult.

Product details: Size: 6-piece set: 12.5 x 6.5 x 6.5 inches (shoe bag), 12.5 x 4.5 x 3 inches (slim cube), 21 x 11.5 x 0.1 inches (laundry bag), 10 x 7 x 4 inches (small), 14 x 10 x 4 inches (large), 16 x 12 x 4 inches (extra large x 2) | Material:   Ripstop nylon-polyester blend | Weight:   15.5 ounces (set)

Best budget: Veken 6 Set Packing Cubes

national geographic best trips

Why we like it: The Veken 6 Set Packing Cubes come with six packing cubes, including a laundry bag and a shoe bag. They cost less than half the price of most other packing bag sets on this list. The low price doesn’t mean low quality, though. The Veken 6 Set Packing Cubes are made of thick polyester, with sturdy zippers and mesh panels to help keep clothes fresh. Plus, they come in 12 colors.

Keep in mind: The laundry and shoe bags are small. The polyester is not ripstop and can melt if dried on high heat.

Product details: Size: 6-piece set: 4.7 x 17 inches (shoe bag), 14 x 20 inches (laundry bag), 11 x 6.75 x 4 inches (small), 13.75 x 9.75 x 4 inches (medium), 13.75 x 12.75 x 4 inches (large), 17.5 x 12.15 x 5 inches (extra large) | Material:   Polyester | Weight:   10.4 ounces (set)

How we chose the best travel packing cubes

We weighed the following qualities when curating the best packing cubes:

Third-party reviews:   We considered reviews from sources other than company websites and spoke with seasoned travelers to find out what they liked.

Brand reputation: Anything you use for traveling should be functional, long-lasting, and, preferably, good for the planet. We looked for brands that value high-quality gear and sustainability.

Quality of material:   We chose travel cubes that were made to last, with durable materials like ripstop nylon and polyester, reinforced seams, and strong zippers.

Size range: Different-sized packing bags make for an easier packing experience. We chose packing cube sets in a range of sizes, from extra small to extra large.

Compression options: Some packing cube brands offer compression bags, which can be a nice feature if you’re tight on space.

Tips for buying packing bags

Here’s what to consider when picking your own packing cubes:

Brand reputation

Choose a trusted brand with a proven reputation. Brands with zipper and fabric warranties or repair programs will also help you get as many vacations as possible with your travel organizers.

If you only use carry-ons or smaller luggage, choose a packing cube set with fewer, smaller travel cubes. If you prefer to use checked luggage, go for a packing cube set with more travel cubes and bigger sizes.

If you travel with just a carry-on or want to use packing cubes for hiking, choose an ultralight packing cube set. Every ounce counts when packing light, and some travel cube sets are nearly 1.5 pounds lighter than others.

Packing cubes are typically made of polyester or nylon, both strong synthetic fabrics. If you need something even more durable, look for ripstop nylon or polyester, which has extra threads to prevent tears from becoming bigger.

Some brands offer compression bags, which can save space. However, King finds that compressed bags can be awkwardly shaped, making them harder to fit together in your suitcase. If you are a heavy packer, travel cubes for shoes or laundry can help keep the rest of your luggage clean.

Frequently asked questions
