Inside, the halls are chock full of works from the likes of Picasso, Cézanne, Degas, Manet and Van Gogh, among others.

Visitors loved the building's design and architecture, but offered more mixed reviews for the art on display. Some raved about the permanent collection and the special exhibitions, while others felt the cost of entrance tickets was overpriced for the amount of art displayed. Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo

According to travelers, these 265 acres sheltering more than 10,000 animals should be near the top of every young family's itinerary in New York. And if you're an older visitor, the Bronx Zoo could be a great way to escape the nonstop activity in Manhattan. This zoo's claim to fame is that it's one of the largest metropolitan animal parks in the country. It's also one of the best zoos in the U.S . Originally opened at 1899, the zoo also houses several famous landmarks, including the Rainey Memorial Gates, the Rockefeller Fountain and the historic Zoo Center, which was constructed to look like a palace.

Among the zoo's popular exhibits is JungleWorld, which aims to recreate the jungles of Asia with animals like white-cheeked gibbons, gharials, tapirs, fruit bats and more. There's also the Wild Asia Monorail, a seasonal outdoor monorail that allows visitors to observe animals like rhinos, tigers and red pandas roaming freely in the outdoor habitat. Other star attractions include the Congo Gorilla Forest, the seasonal butterfly garden, Tiger Mountain and the Children's Zoo. Along with the animals, there are also several rides and experiences, such as a carousel and sea lion feedings.

Apollo Theater Apollo Theater

One of the most famous music halls in the United States, "the Apollo" started as a burlesque theater in 1914. By the 1930s, it transformed into a concert hall that helped launch the career of several black musicians. A then-unknown Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Jackson (with the Jackson 5) and Stevie Wonder all performed on the Apollo stage during an Amateur Night competition. If you're in Harlem on a Wednesday you can still go to Amateur Night, an experience some previous travelers highly recommend.

Metropolitan Opera House Metropolitan Opera House

Stroll through the courtyard of the Metropolitan Opera House even if you're not going inside for a performance. Every element of this opulent building – from the limestone architecture, to the lobby's glittering chandelier, to the acoustics in the concert hall – is gorgeous. Travelers call this opera house a feast for the eyes and ears. Tickets are notoriously expensive (as much as several hundred dollars for the best seats), but the sticker shock evaporates quickly if you're into performing arts. You can try to score a same-day ticket at a discounted rate, plus there are discounts for senior citizens.

The Metropolitan Opera House features spring performances by the American Ballet Theatre and fall and winter performances by the Met Opera Company. Showtimes and ticket prices vary by performance and seating, so check the Met Opera's website for additional details. You'll find the opera house at Lincoln Center Plaza on Manhattan's Upper West Side – take the 1 train to 66th Street.

Radio City Music Hall Radio City Music Hall

It's where Ella Fitzgerald pined for the man she loved, the Rolling Stones couldn't get no satisfaction and Lady Gaga had a "Bad Romance." Among performers, there's no New York concert venue that's quite like Radio City Music Hall. Not only is it the largest indoor theater in the world, its marquee spans a full city block. Opened in 1932, the theater is a New York City Landmark. Today, the theater welcomes musical performers like Ben Platt and Lil Nas X, as well as comedians like Chris Rock.

If you're in town any dates between November and January, consider attending the famous Radio City Christmas Spectacular, which stars the Rockettes. According to recent visitors who attended a show, there's not a bad seat in the house. If you're not able to attend a performance, consider signing up for the hourlong Radio City Stage Door Tour. The guided tour includes stops at areas of the historic venue not typically seen by the public, such as Radio City’s secret apartment, The Roxy Suite. You'll also an enjoy an in-depth history lesson about the stage and its iconic art deco design. The tour concludes with a meet-and-greet with a Radio City Rockette. Tours are offered daily starting at 9:30 a.m.; tickets cost $42 per adult and $38 per kid 12 and younger.  

The Battery The Battery free

Also known as The Battery, this 25-ace park sits at the very southern tip of Manhattan Island, and offers a green respite from the steel and concrete of lower Manhattan. The park, named after artillery batteries that protected the settlement in the 17th century, is popular with visitors because of its views of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty . 

The park is home to perennial gardens, bike paths, grand lawns, an urban farm and a unique carousel, known as the SeaGlass Carousel. On the carousel, riders sit within iridescent fish and glide through a 360-degree aquatic adventure. The carousel’s bioluminescent design honors the waterfront site as well as another landmark, the Castle Clinton, one of the country’s earliest aquariums. 

Coney Island Coney Island

Known as the "the People's Playground," this famous amusement area in Brooklyn has witnessed an illustrious past. In the early 1900s, Coney Island enticed New Yorkers to visit with its bathing pavilions, seaside resorts and amusement park. The Great Depression took its toll on the fun-loving spot, causing many attractions to close. But after years of economic instability, Coney Island has reclaimed its place on the Brooklyn map, with a fresh roster of eateries and entertainment (including a July Fourth hot dog-eating contest and an annual Mermaid Parade ) found along the boardwalk. Coney Island now features several separate amusement parks, as well as a museum, which hosts a variety of exhibits and shows.

According to recent visitors, Coney Island is a worthwhile trip in the summer if you have the time and are traveling with young kids who would enjoy the rides. If you're not up for indulging your inner thrill-seeker, you can also walk along the beach, which spans nearly 3 miles and features several sports courts, as well as playgrounds. A walk along the iconic Riegelmann Boardwalk is just as memorable, according to recent visitors.

Chrysler Building Chrysler Building free

Technically, the Chrysler Building is an office building open Monday through Friday, but you don't need to go inside to appreciate its aesthetic appeal. Recent visitors praised the building's unique architectural style (though a few wished you could still go inside to admire its intricate lobby and elevators).

Built in 1930, the Chrysler had a short-lived run as the tallest building in the city, before it was usurped of its title by the Empire State Building . Nevertheless, this 1,046-foot-high skyscraper remains a favorite among New Yorkers for its classic art deco style. And unlike the Empire State, at this site you won't need an expensive entry ticket, a strong stomach to stand soaring heights or patience for long lines to see what all the fuss is about. You can behold the building's menacing gargoyles and triangular openings from many spots in Manhattan. Though the lobby is currently closed to visitors, there have been talks of building an observation deck, though none is available at this time.

While the mention of NYC undoubtedly brings to mind many of its famous buildings and attractions, it can be very difficult picking which ones you want to visit during your trip. Our list below of the best attractions in New York is in no particular order and is based on our experiences with each attraction as well as what we think makes for a good trip to the Big Apple!

The Edge Observation Deck

The Hudson Yards observation deck called Edge is New York’s newest and highest open observation deck. It opened in March 2020 and we were there – the view from up here is just sensational, and through the glass floor you can see over 100 floors straight down!

Empire State Building

The first of our must-see New York attractions is the world-renowned Empire State Building . The view from the observation platform of the Empire State Building will take your breath away and is a sight that you won’t soon forget. An absolute must-see during a visit to New York! We have compiled everything you need to know about the Empire State Building, including our tips & tricks, important info regarding ticket options, and whether going to the 102nd floor is really worth it.

An official city landmark and the second of our must-see New York attractions: the Brooklyn Bridge. Be sure to walk across the bridge to enjoy the fabulous views onto the city skyline, especially in the early evening hours! The view from Brooklyn across the East River is also spectacular and is definitely a must-see. New tours are available that take you across the bridge into Brooklyn and these are quite popular.  You can find the most popular tours on this page .

Our tip: Make a day out of it! We recommend you check out the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge Park and spend the afternoon walking around DUMBO if you time it right you can head back across the Brooklyn Bridge at sunset when the views are especially beautiful. If you get hungry, don’t pass on pizza at Juliana’s, the line may be long but this is definitely some of the best pizza you can get in NYC!

Top of the Rock

The next activity on our list of must-see New York attractions is the observation platform on the top of the Rockefeller Center. The Top of the Rock observation deck will give you fantastic outdoor views of New York and is one of our favorite places to view the city from above.

The best thing about this observation deck is that you have a great view of downtown Manhattan, the Empire State Building as well as Central Park in the other direction. This attraction ranks high among our top 10 things to do as this is where most iconic pictures of the Empire State Building are shot from. If you’re in town during the holiday, make sure to check out Rockefeller Plaza and the famous Christmas tree in NYC.

OUR TIP: GO IN THE LATE AFTERNOON!

9/11 Memorial and Museum

The 9/11 Memorial Museum is located at the 9/11 National Memorial and is probably one of the most emotional museums in New York. It is mostly located underground and displays debris from the former Twin Towers in addition to many of the personal belongings of those buried. Among them are fire trucks deformed by heat, a part of the antenna of the North Tower, a scorched elevator motor, the saving stone staircase (Survivor’s Staircase) as well as remains of sidewalks, street signs, bicycles and baby carriages that were in front of the World Trade Center.

One World Observatory

One of the newest activities in this list of top 10 New York attractions is the observation platform on top of the One World Trade Center.  The OWTC is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and is close to where the Twin Towers once stood.

With a height of 1,776 feet (541 meters), the One World Observatory gives you amazing views of Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum is also one of the best New York attractions that we highly recommend visiting. You can order tickets online here !

There are few parks as unique as the High Line. The elevated freight rail line was repurposed as a public green space that opened in 2009 and now offers amazing views of the city, as well as a place to relax and unwind. Its plant life is based directly off what was growing there while it was abandoned, giving this park a unique and interesting atmosphere! The High Line stretches from The Meatpacking District all the way to Hudson Yards-34th Street.

There is no doubt that you cannot miss this must-see New York attraction. Times Square always has something going on and is packed with people at all times of the day. Being in the middle of the buzz and watch the thousands of people and cars go by is definitely an experience.

The best of Times Square has to offer, however, is at night. That’s when the LED screens light up the whole square as if it were broad daylight! There is also a pedestrian zone where you can sit down and relax or several rooftop bars right around the corner that offer sensational views!

Staten Island Ferry

Manhattan’s Wall Street is home to the New York Stock Exchange and the headquarters of numerous banks. It is definitely one of the most popular 10 things to fo in NYC on this list, as it has been featured in countless movies and tv shows. One icon of Wall Street is the Charging Bull statue, which is located near the Stock Exchange.

It is at its current location in the plaza at Bowling Green in an act of “guerrilla art”. Guided tours through the Financial District as well as the Wall Street Insider Tour are hugely popular.

Central Park spans from Midtown Manhattan all the way up to Harlem. There are about 340 hectares of land and is a popular meeting place for New Yorkers. With about 35 million visitors per year, the man-made park is an attraction not only for tourists. New Yorkers love Central Park and its tranquility. Many events are held here such as the NYC Marathon. There are also tons of green spaces, walking lanes, and bike lanes. Central Park is home to Sheep’s Meadow, Bow Bridge, Bethesda Terrace, Central Park Zoo, and many other things as well.

Bryant Park

Bryant Park is located right in central Manhattan and is a quiet oasis between 40th and 42nd Street. Bryant Park is right in the cetner of Midtown Manhattan between 40th and 42nd Street, yet it still lends you the peace and quiet you need to get away for a few moments from the bustling city. Withg many small cafés dotted throughout the park this is the perfect place to unwind or relax when the weather is nice.

Brooklyn Bridge Park

You will find the beginning of Brooklyn Bridge Park just below Brooklyn Bridge. With amazing views of the skyline across the water and some great places to sit and enjoy the view, this park is a must-visit! For those of you who like running, this is an amazing place to do so, especially with the amazing Manhattan skyline view. There are also tons of green spaces, basketball, volleyball courts, and soccer fields.

The Vessel Hudson Yards

The Vessel is an attraction in the Hudson Yards – and it’s free! Designed by British Thomas Heatherwick (designer of the “Rolling Bridge and UK Pavilion at Expo 2010), “The Vessel” offers around 2,500 steps to climb up and down. The symmetrical steel structure, connected by 154 interwoven stair segments, attracts tourists from all over the world to climb the vertical distance of about one mile!

Note: The Vessel is unfortunately still closed at the moment. You can only enter at the bottom, the stairs are still closed and it is not known if and when they will be open to the public again.

One Vanderbilt The Summit

The New York City skyline is one of the most famous and recognizable skylines in the world. It’s a city filled with skyscrapers and tall buildings. In most recent years, it has been expanding which made way for new observation decks. The newest observation deck is located at the top of the One Vanderbilt Building and is called The Summit. This deck is the second-highest outdoor deck in NYC which follows the Edge and has been open since October 2021.

Flatiron Building

The Flatiron Building is one of the most popular, beautiful and iconic buildings in NYC. The triangle shaped building likens the shape of a iron, hence the name. As one of the most photogenic spots in NYC this is definitely worth the visit for every tourist.

New York Public Library

The New York Public Library is one of the most famous buildings in NYC. Having featured in countless films and photographs, this is one of the best public libraries in the United Sates. The New York Public Library is not only a place for students, professors, and bookworms but also a must visit for toruists of the Big Apple.

Grand Central Terminal

You can’t visit New York City and not have a peek of the stunning Grand Central Station . The Grand Central Station is the largest train station in the world and is the busiest building in New York City in terms of visitors.

Did you know: the painting on the ceiling (image of the sky) was painted in its mirror image. The painter accidentally held the image upside down! The official reason, of course, is that this effect was by design. The painter claimed that the image reflects God’s view of the sky from the celestial sphere, i.e., from above, and not from below. It’s a must-see and absolutely worth going.

Roosevelt Island Tramway

This is one of my favorite things to do in New York City and should be on your list if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a few hours. Most NYC visitors don’t know that we actually have a tramway leaving from Manhattan, the Roosevelt Island Tramway . The final destination is Roosevelt Island , which is a small island between Manhattan and Queens. While riding the tramway is already an attraction on its own, Roosevelt Island is worth exploring as well.

American Museum of Natural History

The American Museum of Natural History is one of the more popular museums in NYC. If the name sounds recognizable it’s because the museum was the center of attention in the movie, Night at the Museum featuring Ben Stiller. Regardless of it’s Hollywood fame, the Natural History Museum is a huge institution that features numerous exhibits. This is a great place for families with kids so they can learn about the world’s geography, plants, different animal species and many other things.

The American Museum of Natural History is located in the Upper West Side in Manhattan and is the largest natural history museum in the world.

Domino Park

This beautiful park opened up in Williamsburg in 2018. It’s called Domino park because the former Domino Sugar factory was located at that very spot. Now, it’s filled with greenery, food vendors and a playground for kids. It is located directly on the East River and you have a great view of the city from here. The park invites you to play volleyball or have a picnic.

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

The Museum of Modern Art houses a variety of contemporary artworks ranging from architecture and design to photography, paintings, and sculptures. Designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, the Museum of Modern Art reopened after renovations. Coinciding with MoMA’s seventy-fifth anniversary, the museum opened its redesigned space for exhibitions, education, and scholarly research. It is a must-do if you’re into art. Especially after their reopening, it is really worth it going.

MoMA has a reputation for displaying the world’s finest collection of modern and contemporary art. The MoMA reopening will bring new galleries and spaces for performances and events to the visitors. Visitors can expect a bigger, more diverse MoMA after the reopening. Masterpieces have been cleaned and touched up; galleries are completely reorganized. Guggenheim Museum

First off, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is an architectural masterpiece. Second, but most importantly, it is the permanent home of a large collection of art named after its founder. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright the bizarrely shaped building is one of the most famous in NYC. Not only is the outside spectacular, but it is constantly expanding its permanent collection. Also, many special exhibitions are showcased here throughout the years. It is definitely worth a visit!

Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island (Ferry & Stop)

The fact that the Statue of Liberty is missing from the top 10 list is not an accident. It is always too busy and crowded and you can take much better pictures of the Statue from further away. Instead, we recommend you take a boat tour around Manhattan that makes a brief loop around the Statue of Liberty giving you a good photo opportunity, or take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry!

Just recently, there is a new museum, the Statue of Liberty Museum , that opened on Liberty Island. It tells you everything about the history of the Statue of Liberty. First-timers often visit the Statue of Liberty. Be aware though that it will take away at least 4-6 hours of your day if you want to see everything from the Statue of Liberty to the Immigration Museum.

A beautiful places to visit in NYC: Grand Banks

Water, a great view of Manhattan and a great atmosphere – the location is simply the best. You are sitting on a historic ship called F/V Sherman Zwicker on the Hudson River and can enjoy New York from the water when the weather is fine. The place also serves great drinks and seafood.

Governors Island

When the weather is beautiful in New York City and you want to escape for a moment from the noise, the hustle and bustle, then a trip to Governors Island is something to consider. The Governors Island Ferry will take you across the East River for $4.

Since 2021 Governors Island is open all year round!

Jane's Carousel

In the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge Park there is a beautiful carousel for young and old all year round. From there you can also enjoy the great view of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge.

Pier 54 - Little Island

Not far from the Meatpacking District and the High Line, Little Island is one of the newest attractions in New York and is something very special: a park on 132 beautiful tulip-shaped concrete stilts in the Hudson River!

So beautiful: Gallow Green Rooftop

Gallow Green is a unique rooftop bar located above McKittrick Hotel. What makes it so special is its quaint and green atmosphere. The whole bar is overgrown with foliage and certainly does its name justice: It looks like a garden! Not to be forgotten are the delicious drinks that are served there. It’s even listed in our Rooftop Bar Guide as one of the 43 Best Rooftop Bars in New York .

This is one of the NYC attractions that you definitely shouldn’t miss! All you need is a subway ticket to take the cable car across the East River at heights of over 200ft. The views from the cable car are amazing and equally as impressive from Roosevelt Island!

One of the most instagrammed places in NYC: DUMBO

Don’t forget to capture the most famous photo on Washington Street in Dumbo: With the Manhattan Bridge and the tiny Empire State Building in the background, the street is popular with all tourists to take the perfect photo. Manhattan Bridge is the second famous bridge in Dumbo. If you like, you can also cross it on foot and enjoy the great view of the skyline as well as the Brooklyn Bridge from there.

Wall Street

Washington Square Park

Washington Square Park, centrally located in the Village, extends over almost 4 hectares. Close to New York University with its distinctive Washington Square Arch, a triumphal arch inaugurated in 1895, the park is a popular place to be when the weather is fine. Through the Arch you have a wonderful view along 5th Avenue to the top of the Empire State Building. 

If you are lucky, you can even enjoy a free jazz concert from the many jazz artists of the Village. Here, friends and family meet to relax, play chess, or just in general have a good time.

A park with a waterfall at Rockefeller Center: The Paley Park

The entrance to the park, which is only 390 square metres in size, is at 53rd Street – and what immediately catches the eye: the 6-metre high waterfall. During the day in summer the waterfall’s spray mist is wonderfully cooling. And: it “swallows” all surrounding sounds and the park is such a spot with a really fascinating atmosphere! Midtown’s Paley Park is one of those secret places in New York that almost nobody knows about. A normal tourist doesn’t even consider the existence of such a park, but a New Yorker doesn’t either. The fact is that it is an oasis that radiates an aura of peace in the middle of the New York hustle and bustle.

The Radio City Music Hall is a very famous theater building in the middle of New York. It is part of the Rockefeller Center and is located in close proximity to the Top of The Rock and the Museum of Modern Art. When you see the Radio City Music Hall from the outside, it will seem like a journey 80 years into the past. In many movies you can see the old neon sign and therefore it is really famous.

The Honorable William Wall, affectionately called “Willy Wall”, is the floating clubhouse of the Manhattan Yacht Club. The clubhouse is anchored in New York Harbor north of Ellis Island from May to October. What is so special about it? It’s definitely an insider’s spot, which not only gives you a great view of Ellis Island and of course the Statue of Liberty – you can also enjoy the sunset from here.

In 2010, Eataly was opened in New York by master chef Mario Batali. The pizza is very remeniscent of pizza and the wine selection is huge. You will also find a large selection of ecellent pasta, salads, and sandwiches. In terms of price, it has to be said in advance that a pizza starts at $15 and can cost $25. Nevertheless, this Italian food market is for me one of the most beautiful and best in the city!

Astoria Park

One of the most beautiful spots in Astoria, Queens is Astoria Park. This popular park on the East River is a popular retreat for New Yorkers, especially in the summer. On hot summer days, they jump into New York’s oldest public pool to cool off. This is a rare sight, by the way, because you hardly find any outdoor pools in New York. Astoria Park just recently went under renovation as well and has revamped its track and field. 

Not only do you have a beautiful view of Manhattan, but you’re also right under the RFK Bridge and have a direct view of Hells Gate Bridge.

Williamsburg

Brooklyn is famous for its bold and bright street art, but it’s not easy to know where to find these creative works. With this walking tour of the Bushwick neighborhood, take in the diversity and culture of the neighborhood’s urban street artists. The 478-acre cemetery is leafy and lovely and features Brooklyn's highest point, Battle Hill – named after a skirmish during the Revolutionary War and now marked with a seven-foot statue of the Roman goddess of wisdom, Minerva.

Planning tip:  Watch for the squawking green parakeets at the cemetery's Gothic-style entrance pavilion; according to local legend, these non-native birds arrived after a mishap at JFK Airport in the 1980s and have called the cemetery home ever since.

8. Get a culture fix in the Boogie Down at the Bronx Museum of the Arts 

A scrappy and vibrant institution on the historic Grand Concourse, the Bronx Museum of the Arts' mission is to promote cross-cultural dialogue and make art accessible for diverse urban audiences. Founded in 1971 in New York's northernmost borough , the museum collects and exhibits pieces of contemporary and 20th-century art spanning all mediums. The museum became free in 2012.

9. Savor each of Central Park's 843 acres

Even though the real estate surrounding this famous urban oasis is some of the most expensive in the world, access to Central Park is gloriously free for New Yorkers and visitors of all means. Since Frederick Law Olmsted's layout of the park was intended to be pleasantly disorienting, we recommend spending a few hours wandering aimlessly through its alluring paths, lush groves and delightful water features.

You probably won't want to miss the Imagine mosaic at Strawberry Fields , just steps in from where John Lennon was shot in 1980. You can also retrace the steps of  The Catcher in the Rye  protagonist  Holden Caulfield  by checking out the ducks in the Pond at the park's southeastern corner.

10. Gallery-hop in West Chelsea

New York's most concentrated area for a gallery crawl is in Chelsea, in the West 20s between 10th and 11th Avenues. From small start-ups to established institutions like Pace and David Zwirner , all galleries are free to enter, with no pressure to buy. Check out the Art Dealers Association of America's gallery guide , which has a comprehensive list of current shows, and create your own arty adventure.

Planning tip:  Plan your tour for a Thursday evening, when most wine-and-cheese openings take place.

11. Hop on a boat to bike around Governors Island

The ferry to Governors Island is free on Saturdays and Sundays before noon (usually a $3 round trip). Entry to the 172-acre island, now open year-round, costs nothing either. An eclectic range of attractions includes a 2.2-mile bike path, artificial hills offering splendid harbor views, a program of live events and rotating art installations, plus former military sites such as the Admiral's House and Fort Jay.

Planning tip:  Frequent (and free) guided tours depart from the Soissons Landing Welcome Center.

12. Admire Lady Liberty from the Staten Island Ferry

The Statue of Liberty is a must-see, but ferry tours to Liberty Island start at $18 for adults. Enter the Staten Island Ferry , which plies New York Harbor 24 hours a day, seven days a week, offering a stellar view of this iconic monument at no cost at all. Having been in service since 1905, the ferry shuttles some 19 million visitors and commuters back and forth across the harbor each year. 

13. See how the magic happens during a Brooklyn Brewery tour

Free tours of Williamsburg's Brooklyn Brewery run Saturday and Sunday every half hour starting at 1pm, with the last tour offered at 6pm. Linger a while after in the tasting room.

14. Catch a cool show at BRIC House and Celebrate Brooklyn!

In a part of Brooklyn humming with cultural activity,  BRIC House  is a leading presenter of no-cost multimedia programming, with free admission to two performance spaces and a gallery. In the summer, the organization curates the Celebrate Brooklyn! series in Prospect Park , with a majority of the concerts and performances – which in the past have sets from Chaka Khan, Janelle Monáe, the dancers of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and many others – free of charge, with no ticket necessary.

15. Promenade on the High Line

Technically a public park, the High Line has the feel of a runway, where New Yorkers and tourists (sometimes a lot of them) sashay for a stroll. Part of the slow, ongoing re-green-ification of Manhattan, this 1.5-mile-long elevated park, standing some 30 feet in the air, was created from an abandoned stretch of elevated railroad track.

Connecting the Meatpacking District with Chelsea's galleries before ending at gleaming Hudson Yards , it costs nothing to take a wander up here. En route, wonderful views open up of the Hudson River to the west and of pedestrians on the sidewalks below. 

Planning tip: Hudson Yards has free movie screenings every Friday night in the public square.

16. Explore Native American culture at the National Museum of the American Indian

Situated in the spectacular Alexander Hamilton U.S. Customs House (1907), the National Museum of the American Indian , a branch of the Smithsonian , offers one of the country's finest arrays of Native American art. The focus of its million-item-strong collection, as well as its programs, is on culture rather than history – prepare for a visual feast.

17. Get inspired at the New York Public Library

New York's most famous library  (today known as the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building) is situated in a grand, world-famous Beaux-Arts icon east of Times Square. Guarded by marble lions named Patience and Fortitude, it's a jaw-dropper to walk through – particularly the Rose Main Reading Room, with space for 500 patrons to pore over tomes under the library's original Carrère and Hastings-designed lamps.

Exhibitions showcase the institution's astonishing holdings, which include a copy of the original Declaration of Independence, a Gutenberg Bible and some 431,000 old maps. Free tours  of the building and the Rose Main Reading Room take place throughout the week.

18. Attend a Shakespeare play

You can try your luck to win free tickets to Shakespeare in the Park, presented each summer in Central Park's Delacorte Theater by the  Public Theater , via the digital lottery and standby lines. You can also get your fix of the Bard – with some awfully romantic lighting – at Shakespeare at Sunset, produced by New York Classical Theatre at non-traditional public venues across the city, including Brooklyn Bridge Park . 

19. See a work of art made from 140 tons of dirt

No frame would be big enough for this. The Earth Room , Walter De Maria's 1977 installation, is a single room in a nondescript SoHo building filled with 280,000 pounds of dirt, combining the familiar confines of an urban space with the scent of a wet forest. Strange? A little. Memorable? Definitely.

20. Interact with the art at Socrates Sculpture Park

Overlooking Roosevelt Island and the Upper East Side on the East River, the site of a former landfill now hosts  Socrates Sculpture Park , a playful and free outdoor museum and public park with large-scale interactive sculptures and multimedia art installations. On Wednesdays in the summer, free movie screenings take place, with an emphasis on foreign films, preceded by corresponding music and cultural performances.

21. Admire the world's first LGBTIQ+ dedicated art space, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay & Lesbian Art

Featuring works by US and international artists, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay & Lesbian Art is the first museum in the world dedicated to LGBTIQ+ themes. As well as rotating exhibitions and regular retrospectives, most of the art on show is from the gallery's vast collection. Lectures, performances and film screenings are also held here regularly. It's free, but donations are welcome.

Getting to NYC

Whether you live across the Hudson or across the Atlantic, getting to NYC is easy. If you’re coming from outside the United States, check this page for visa information. Getting Around NYC

New York is an excellent walking city, and getting around by foot is the best way to familiarize yourself with neighborhoods and their (sometimes subtle) divisions. Of course, sometimes you’ll need to move more quickly or cover great distances, for which you’ve got subways, buses and cabs at your disposal. Check out our guide for everything you’ll need to navigate public transit, hail a taxi or take the ferry across the harbor.

International Visitors and Arrivals from Abroad

Visas and ESTA Visitors to New York City from outside the United States may need a visa to enter the country. For details, visit the  US Department of State’s website . Some 40 countries (including Australia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the UK and members of the EU) are part of the visa-waiver program; instead of a visa, citizens of these countries can apply online for Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) up to 72 hours in advance of travel to the US (valid for stays of up to 90 days). The application fee is $21. Canadians just require a valid passport to enter the US.

Trusted Traveler Programs Fly through the lines at JFK, LGA and Newark. The Department of Homeland Security has introduced several programs that can help expedite security and customs screenings when traveling to and from the US, including New York City. The programs, customized based on travel needs and designed to enhance passenger experience, are available for US citizens and residents as well as those from certain foreign countries. US Customs and Border Protection Recent improvements by US Customs and Border Protection have helped decrease wait times to enter the United States for both visitors and citizens coming from abroad. Among these are the Trusted Traveler Programs listed above, as well as self-service kiosks located in the international arrivals terminals at area airports and an app for smartphones and tablets. New York City is composed of five boroughs. While Manhattan and Staten Island are islands, Brooklyn and Queens are geographically part of Long Island, and the Bronx is attached to the US mainland. The boroughs are linked by bridges, tunnels and ferries.  Manhattan Island is roughly 13.4 miles (21.6km) long and about 2.3 miles (3.7km) across at its widest point. The Hudson River runs along its western shore, forming the border with New Jersey on the other side; the East River separates Manhattan from Brooklyn and Queens, while the much narrower Harlem River forms its northern border with the Bronx. Staten Island lies to the south across New York Harbor.

Except at its northern and southern tips, the borough’s avenues run roughly north and south, and streets run east and west. One-way thoroughfares are common, with traffic moving east on even-numbered streets and west on odd-numbered streets. Fifth Avenue divides the island into east and west sides (for example, locations on 57th Street west of Fifth Avenue are designated “W. 57th St.,” and east of Fifth Avenue, they’re “E. 57th St.”). As you move farther east or west from Fifth Avenue, street addresses increase, usually in increments of 100 from one block to the next. For north-south avenues, 20 blocks equals a mile, and the street numbers increase as you go uptown. Blocks can be a useful measure of distance, but keep in mind your direction: walking uptown from 1st Street to 6th Street is about a quarter of a mile, but walking the same number of blocks crosstown, from First Avenue to Sixth Avenue, is approximately a mile.

In New York City and throughout the United States, the dollar is the standard currency. This converter allows you to determine the value of other currencies compared with the dollar.

New York remains among America's safest large cities, but visitors should still use common sense to protect themselves and their property. Be aware of your surroundings, and make sure to always use licensed, reputable businesses for any services you need. For example, don’t hail livery cabs (as opposed to taxis) at the airport, and don’t rent bikes from companies that seem suspicious. If you’re not sure where to find legitimate businesses, the listings at nycgo.com are a good place to start, as are those published by the Better Business Bureau. Your hotel concierge should be able to answer questions on this topic and will be helpful if you need more information about neighborhoods in the five boroughs. Another useful resource is 311, the City’s official government services and information hotline. 

Smoking, Alcohol and Drugs

The legal minimum age for drinking alcohol in New York City (and throughout the USA) is 21. Many bars and nightclubs will ask to see photo ID before letting you in. Smoking (including all tobacco products, vaping products and marijuana) is prohibited in all public buildings, bars, restaurants and stores (plus some outdoor public areas). You must be 21 years old or over to buy cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vaping products, cigars or any tobacco products.

It’s now legal for adults 21 or over to possess up to 3 ounces (85g) of cannabis/marijuana (or just 0.85 ounces/24g of concentrated cannabis) for personal use in New York, and officially licensed dispensaries where you can buy recreational marijuana products have begun to open—the first appearing in late 2022. Smoking rules still apply (you can’t smoke at outdoor dining areas at restaurants, for example). Possession of more than the permitted amount, and all other narcotics, is prohibited. Note that driving a vehicle under the influence of cannabis/marijuana or alcohol is a serious offense in New York, resulting in fines, possible jail time, and deportation (for foreign visitors).

NYC Time Zone

New York City is on Eastern Standard Time (Greenwich mean time minus four hours during daylight saving time, from about mid-March into early November, and minus five hours the rest of the year). EST is three hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time (California and the West Coast).

1. Travel through time at the American Museum of Natural History.

One of the things to see in NYC (New York City) is the American Museum of Natural History. The museum was founded in 1869 and boasts a wondrous display of human history, science, and nature. Travelers worldwide visit this museum for its towering collections of dinosaur fossils, outstanding dioramas, and captivating exhibitions. The museum has recently opened the new Gilder Center, a marvelous atrium with a unique architectural design connecting all galleries in the museum. The new center also houses the butterfly vivarium, which children will surely love.

In addition, the American Museum of Natural History also has a planetarium covering topics of space exploration. Nevertheless, spending time in this place is a must, and it’s worth it! The museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM and is located at 200 Central Park West. They are closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

2. Take a walk in Central Park.

Central Park is a verdant oasis nestled at the heart of New York City. The park boasts 843 acres of green landscapes, winding trails, and exciting structures. It’s a pleasant tourist attraction in New York wherein visitors can have a leisurely walk while enjoying the tranquil atmosphere it provides. Other activities you can do include boating in the lake, seeing animals at the Central Park Zoo, or having a picnic with friends on the Great Lawn. It is a timeless escape and offers a peaceful respite from the city’s hustle and bustle.

3. Visit the iconic Apple Store on Fifth Avenue.

Another place to see in New York is the iconic Apple Store on Fifth Avenue. What’s special about this retail store is its glass cube design, unique among the high-end stores along Fifth Avenue. Whereas facing the south, you will witness the gorgeous Lower Manhattan skyline with the Empire State Building perfectly positioned in the middle. The place is open daily from 9 AM until midnight and accepts visitors until 11:10 PM.

6. Feel the energy of Times Square.

Times Square is absolutely one of the New York tourist attractions you should not miss. This place is known for dazzling Broadway shows, vibrant shops, diverse restaurants, mesmerizing digital billboards, and incredible street performances. It is a hub of entertainment and excitement. Interestingly, this is where the people celebrate the ball drop during New Year’s Eve. You will never run out of things to see or do in this iconic place.

7. Marvel the Beauty of Grand Central Terminal

Another historic place to explore in New York is the Grand Central Terminal at 89 E 42nd St. The station opened in February of 1913, providing connections to different parts of the city. Tourists can admire the architectural design of the Main Concourse, indulge in different dining options, shop for gifts, and immerse in the busy atmosphere of this iconic transportation hub. Witnessing the beauty of the Grand Central Terminal is a must for every tourist visiting New York City.

8. Get on top of the Empire State Building.

The Empire State Building is an iconic and historical landmark offering another perspective of New York City. Awaiting on top of the building is the majestic panorama of the city. What I like about this observation deck is the feeling of traveling through time as you pass through the exhibits and learn about its history before being rewarded with the wonderful views of the city. Every new visitor to New York must see this number-one attraction in the city. The observation deck is open daily from 10 AM to 11 PM.

Travel Tip: I recommend visiting these Observation Decks in the morning or before sunset. As a photo hobbyist, I prefer taking photos during these times of the day because of the vibrant colors and gradients (the golden hour effect). Plus, it’s less crowded whenever you visit early in the morning.

9. Explore the Hudson Yards

One of the new attractions to see in New York is the Hudson Yards. It is a new cultural and entertainment hub on the west side of Manhattan. Tourists can shop around the mall, dine at different restaurants, and explore attractions on this side of the city.

Outside the mall, you will find a new public landmark called the Vessel. It’s an interactive eccentric structure made with spiral staircases. Visitors can enter the base of this artwork, but climbing the staircases is prohibited due to safety concerns. Aside from the Vessel, you will find the Shed, an entertainment venue with an artistic design and shape. The Shed has a telescoping shell that can expand and provide a platform for large-scale performances. With all these extraordinary features, tourists should visit this new spot in the city.

10. Experience the Edge

After visiting the attractions in Hudson Yards, it’s time to go up to the highest viewing deck in the western hemisphere of Manhattan. Of all the observation decks we visited, the Edge is my favorite. Aside from the all-around view of New York City, you can experience an adrenaline rush by looking 100 floors down from their transparent floor.

Another unique thing about this viewing deck is its angled glass walls, providing a better view of the New York Skyline. To get things more exciting, the Edge also offers a thrilling adventure through their City Climb, wherein visitors can walk at the 1200-foot deck, offering the highest outdoor platform in the city. Include this attraction on your travel list; you will experience New York City like never before.

11. People watch at the Washington Square Park.

If you are looking for a place to people-watch besides Central Park, Washington Square Park is a great place for you. Tourists can admire the stately arch with the Empire State Building beautifully framed in the middle and witness various street performances. You can also relax in the shade of century-old trees, interact with the locals, or just read a book while enjoying its atmosphere.

12. Stop by at the Oculus Center

Tourists visiting the One World Trade Center will surely stop by the Oculus transportation hub. This massive structure houses several subway stations leading to different places in New York City. In fact, it is the fifth busiest station in the city! The Oculus features a unique rib-like structure, making it a famous New York tourist attraction. Surprisingly, this place is also the most expensive station, costing $4 billion in construction. Aside from its enormous design, the Oculus also has stores to shop around.

Travel Tip: Be like the locals. New York is one of the most accessible cities in the United States. Thanks to their subway system, tourists can experience the convenience and reliability of traveling to different parts of the city. Make sure to use one form of payment in the New York Subway for the entire visit. In my experience, I used my iPhone through Tap to Pay with OMNY to pay for my rides in the subway. 13.  Commemorate 9/11

The whole world was shaken because of the tragic events of 9/11. We visited the 9/11 Memorial and Museum to commemorate and learn about the devastating event of the September 11 attacks. The place has two memorial pools, which are remnants of the World Trade Center towers. Visitors can pay their respects at these pools, and each pool is inscribed with the names of nearly 3,000 victims of the 2001 attacks.

On the other hand, the museum exhibits artifacts from the old towers, photographs, and personal stories from victims and their families. The museum provides a moving, profound understanding and a deeper appreciation for resilience and unity. It’s a solemn yet powerful experience that will truly leave a mark on every visitor to New York.

14. Take a photo with the Charging Bull

Weighing over 7,000 pounds (3,000 kilos), this mighty bronze statue in the Financial District became an instant tourist attraction from 1989 until today. The charging bull symbolizes the financial optimism and resilience of Wall Street. Some tourists visiting the statue consider it a symbol of luck, prosperity, and financial success. Nevertheless, it is quite a tourist spot, and it is a must for you to have a photo with this behemoth.

15.  Visit Dumbo

Dumbo, also known as the “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass,” is a vibrant neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. It is a trendy New York tourist attraction, and visitors come to this place to experience its thriving art scene and gourmet cuisine from local eateries. But the best part is to be captivated by the fantastic views of the Manhattan Skyline framed by the historic Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge.

16. Stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge

Another tourist attraction close to Dumbo is the Brooklyn Bridge. This bridge’s marvelous architectural design offers a good view of Lower Manhattan. You can stroll or bike across the bridge while learning about its rich history and admiring its beauty. Don’t forget to capture photos in this stunning tourist spot and create memories that last a lifetime.

17. Learn the History of Castle Clinton National Monument

Castle Clinton National Monument is one of the oldest structures built in New York City, located at the southern tip of Lower Manhattan. This is an excellent addition to your New York City vacation, especially for history buffs out there.

18. Find connections at Ellis Island.

As economic instabilities and problems arose in European countries during the 1800s, many immigrants entered the United States to hope for a better future. Ellis Island opened on January 1, 1892, as an immigration station accepting newcomers worldwide. Since its opening, Ellis Island has processed over 12 million immigrants, making this tourist spot a poignant reminder of America’s immigrant heritage.

Today, visitors can explore the museum filled with exhibits of photographs, artifacts, and stories of success and heartbreaks. It is a moving experience and allows tourists to connect with their ancestors through their records and archives. Interestingly, I found out that my earliest ancestor set foot in the United States during the 1930s. This made me think of my family heritage and allowed me to reconnect to my past. Ellis Island is an important New York tourist attraction that you shouldn’t miss.

Amsterdam has banned the construction of new hotels as part of their latest attempt to rein in the number of rowdy tourists visiting the Dutch capital each year.

“We want to make and keep the city livable for residents and visitors,” the City Council said in a statement.

This means no over-tourism, no new hotels, and no more than 20 million hotel overnight stays by tourists per year, the local government added.

Under the new rules, building a new hotel in Amsterdam will only be allowed when another hotel closes, and only if the total number of guestrooms in the city does not increase as a result of the new construction. 

The new accommodation will also be required to be more sustainable.

Mayor Femke Halsema said there would be some exceptions to the policy, noting that the rule won’t apply to new hotels — 26 in total — that have already secured a permit.

The new ban is largely symbolic, with only three proposals for new hotels meeting the city’s already strict requirements since 2017, the New York Times reported.

In 2019, there were 25.2 million hotel stays in Amsterdam. That number was far exceeded by visitors last year, not taking into account Airbnbs and daytrippers disembarking from cruise ships, city data revealed.

In total, Amsterdam has nearly 42,000 hotel rooms that can accommodate more than 92,000 guests, according to Statistics Netherlands, representing about 28% of the 150,000 hotel rooms across the country.

But some experts have said the ban won’t have a very big effect.

Ko Koens, a professor of new urban tourism at Inholland University Rotterdam, told the Times it won’t be easy to keep visitors away from the popular tourist hub known for its canals, museums, and decadent nightlife. 

“There are no simple solutions. It’s super complex,” Koens said.

In March, the city launched an ad campaign targeting British men aged 18 to 35 urging them to “stay away” from the city. In July Amsterdam announced it would bar cruise ships from docking in the city center.

Stricter rules about smoking marijuana have also been implemented, in addition to a ban on new tourist shops and even a push to discourage sex and drug-related tourism in its world-renowned red light district.

Amsterdam isn’t the only European destination scrambling to reclaim its city from the clutches of mass tourism. 

Visitors to the southern Spanish city Seville may soon have to cough up a fee to see the Plaza de España square , which has been falling apart from swarms of tourists and illegal vendors.

Meanwhile, Venice banned large tourist groups in 2024 to “protect” the historic sinking city by curbing congestion in its narrow streets and waterways.

Further south in the Canary Islands, residents have protests and strikes planned this weekend to fight against overtourism.

Closer to home, lawmakers in Hawaii proposed a $25 climate tax on tourists who visit the state to combat what they claim is an assault on the area’s natural resources .

Hikers in Hawaii will have to find a new way to reach the Heavens.

The legendary Haiku Staircase on Oahu, Hawaii will finally be demolished after tourists continued to trespass on the legendary landmark despite repeated warnings, the New York Post reports.

According to the Honolulu City Government, the iconic site will be torn down by the end of this month, making good on a motion that the city unanimously voted on in 2021.

“I can promise you that this was not a capricious decision,” Mayor Rick Blangiardi said in a press release . “This was a decision, when we came into office, that was long overdue.”

Often dubbed the “Stairway to Heaven,” the Haiku Staircase comprises a treacherously steep series of 3,922 steps that winds along a mountain range in Kaneohe, making hikers feel like they’re in the clouds.

Built during World War II by the US Navy, the landmark was shuttered in 1987 due to vandalism and littering. Any trespassers are currently liable for a $US1000 ($1550) fine.

Despite the financial deterrent and the dangerous terrain, daredevils, sightseers and social media content creators continued to ascend the stairs.

In 2021, Hawaiian TikTokker Camille Leihulu posted a video chastising a travel TikToker, named Sofia McMillan who filmed herself allegedly accessing the feature.

Council members claimed that the rampant trespassing made the Haiku Stairs an expensive and dangerous liability, and also encroached upon the local communities, among other factors, per the release.

“This decision that was made was predicated upon our respect for the people who live in and around the entrance to the stairs, our respect for our ʻāina [land and sea], and our respect for both the future and the past history of the culture of the Haʻikū community,” declared Mayor Blangiardi.

The demolition will reportedly take at least half a year and cost $US2.5 million ($3.9 million), the mayor’s office reported.

In the interim, it’s best that people steer clear of the staircase.

“While the actual removal of stairway modules will not begin until later this month, the modules are being prepared for removal and present an immediate safety threat for anyone trespassing along the trail,” officials warned in the release.

New York celebrates record tourism during total solar eclipse

Governor Kathy Hochul announced unprecedented tourist arrivals in New York state parks during the recent total solar eclipse. From April 6 to April 9, nearly one million visitors flocked to the parks, marking a 45% increase in attendance compared to the same period in 2023. The influx was bolstered by special events at New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority facilities, which drew over 10,000 guests.

Transportation networks saw a significant uptick in activity, with the New York State Thruway Authority and Department of Transportation noting increased vehicle travel. The New York Power Authority also reported a substantial rise in electric vehicle charging, providing nearly double the charging miles compared to the previous week. Governor Hochul herself was among the 45,000 spectators at Niagara Falls State Park, one of the prime locations for viewing the eclipse.

This spike in visitors was a direct result of extensive preparations by a state Interagency Task Force convened in October 2022, aiming to ensure a safe and successful experience for eclipse viewers. The event not only highlighted New York’s natural beauty but also demonstrated the effective collaboration across nearly two dozen state agencies and authorities in managing large-scale events.

Flying With Dogs or Cats? These Are Airlines’ Pet Policies

American recently relaxed its rules for pets traveling inside the cabin with their owners. Here’s what the major U.S. airlines require to travel with a pet.

Flying with a pet can be expensive and confusing, with fees, weight limits, carrier size rules and the need to make sure there’s no loud barking (or meowing) on board.

Recently, American Airlines relaxed its pet policy to allow passengers to bring a carry-on bag in addition to a pet in a carrier, and more private flight options have been emerging in recent years for pet owners who can afford them.

Still, flying with large or medium-size dogs can be tricky, and many travelers are wary of leaving a pet in the plane’s cargo hold.

For those traveling on the major carriers with their pets as carry-ons, here’s what to know about each major domestic airline’s policy.

Southwest Airlines

On Southwest, a Dallas-based carrier, two checked bags can fly at no cost, but not pets. Southwest charges $125 per pet carrier on its flights.

Dogs or cats are allowed to travel below a seat in an approved carrier — up to 18.5 inches long by 8.5 inches high and 13.5 inches wide — according to the airline .

Southwest has a few caveats for those traveling with pets: The pet must stay in its carrier during the flight, and the carrier is considered a personal item or carry-on bag.

Up to six pets are allowed on Southwest flights. Once six pets are booked onto a flight, no further customers may add a pet companion to their booking.

United Airlines

United Airlines has no weight or breed restrictions for cats and dogs as long as they are in an approved hard or soft-sided carrier, measuring 17.5 inches long by 9 inches tall and 12 inches wide for a hard carrier, or 18 inches long by 11 inches tall and 11 inches wide for a soft carrier.

United charges $125 each way for travel with pets. There is no fee for service animals on United flights, but some forms are required before the flight.

The carrier must fit under a seat, and where a passenger is allowed to sit can vary according to the type of aircraft. For example, people traveling with pets cannot sit in emergency rows. If you’re traveling with two pets (the maximum allotted), you are required to book two seats.

Delta Air Lines

Small dogs and cats can travel on Delta Air Lines flights as long as they can fit inside a carrier stored below the seat. The size of the carrier depends on the aircraft, but in general the airline recommends a soft-sided carrier no larger than 18 inches long by 11 inches tall and 11 inches wide.

Your pet must be at least 8 weeks old and small enough to have some room to move around in the carrier, which must have ventilation openings on three sides.

Delta charges $95 for pets traveling as carry-on companions, and the passenger can bring only one personal item along with the pet. Certain seats cannot be booked for travel with an animal, such as those in an emergency exit row.

American Airlines

American Airlines allows cats and dogs to travel in a carry-on container, which must remain under the seat in front of the pet owner throughout the flight. The airline recommends a soft-sided carrier that measures 18 inches long by 11 inches tall and 11 inches wide.

The fee for a carry-on pet on a domestic American Airlines flight is $150.

Flights are limited to seven carry-on pets, not including service animals, and American Eagle flights are limited to five carry-on pets, with one in first class. There is no charge for service animals flying on American flight, but the airline requires forms to be filled out in advance.

The airline said in a statement that it had recently changed its cabin pet policy to allow customers with a pet to also bring either a personal item or carry-on bag stowed in the overhead bin (but not both).

“We made the change to provide a more convenient and comfortable experience to customers whose pets fly American,” the airline said.

Spirit, JetBlue, Frontier and Alaska

Spirit allows dogs and cats on its flights in a carrier no larger than 18 inches long by 14 inches wide and 9 inches tall for a fee of $125. The weight of the pet and the carrier cannot exceed 40 pounds, according to the airline .

Small dogs and cats can fly on JetBlue for fee of $125 each way , in an approved carrier. Up to six pets are allowed on JetBlue flights.

Frontier allows pets on board for a $99 fee each way, as long the pet fits in a carrier. Passengers can have only a personal item or carry-on in addition to their pet carrier.

Pets can travel in a carrier on Alaska Airlines flights for a fee of $100 each way. A passenger can travel with a pet carrier and a personal item, or a carrier and a carry-on bag.

Private or charter flights

Those who take their pets on private or charter flights, which can cost many thousands of dollars, have much more leeway. Dogs that weigh less than 150 pounds can sit on seats.

BarkAir, a charter operator tailored specifically for those flying with dogs, charges about $6,000 for a dog and its owner to travel, with flights between New York and Los Angeles and New York and London. Carriers are not required, and dogs can sit on laps, seats or beds.

Record tourism numbers announced during total solar eclipse.

NEW YORK — Gov. Kathy Hochul announced record-setting tourism numbers in New York from April 6 to April 9 as visitors arrived for the total solar eclipse.

According to a press release from the governor’s office, nearly one million people visited New York State Parks from April 6 to April 9 – an increase of 45 percent compared to last year.

The New York State Thruway Authority and New York State Department of Transportation recorded significant increases in vehicle travel, and the New York Power Authority provided nearly double the charging miles for electric vehicles when compared to the previous week. Governor Hochul was one of 45,000 visitors who experienced Monday’s celestial event at Niagara Falls State Park.

“From majestic Niagara Falls to the mighty Adirondacks, New York was one of the best places on earth to witness this once-in-a-generation celestial event,” Hochul said in the release. “We planned for more than a year to welcome a record number of visitors during the total solar eclipse, and those preparations helped this event go off safely and successfully.”

In October 2022, Governor Hochul convened an Interagency Task Force comprised of nearly two dozen state agencies and authorities to prepare to welcome the influx of visitors the state expected for this once-in-a-generation event. New York State agencies involved in the Interagency Task Force reported record services provided to residents and travelers.

New York State Parks

From April 6 to April 9, nearly one million visitors showed up to New York State Parks to witness and celebrate the total solar eclipse, an increase in attendance of more than 45 percent compared to the same days in 2023. On April 8 alone, New York State Parks welcomed more than 326,500 visitors, an over 52 percent jump in attendance compared to last year.

12 state parks reached full capacity on April 8:

• Cayuga Lake (Seneca County)

• Chimney Bluffs (Wayne County)

• Crown Point (Essex County)

• Cumberland Bay (Clinton County)

• Fair Haven State Park (Cayuga County)

• John Brown Farm (Essex County)

• Point Au Roche (Clinton County)

• Robert Whele (Jefferson County)

• Selkirk (Oswego County)

• Seneca Lake (Seneca County)

• Southwick Beach (Jefferson County)

• Stony Brook State Park (Steuben County)

Hochul opened campgrounds at State Parks within the path of totality early to accommodate visitors for the total solar eclipse, which were 100 percent booked the night of April 7 and 93 percent booked the night of April 8. To welcome visitors, New York State Parks and Historic Sites hosted numerous eclipse-viewing gatherings on April 8.

Additionally, scientists, subject matter experts and astronauts from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) provided programming and exhibits at Niagara Falls State Park through April 8.

New York Power Authority

On April 7 and April 8, the New York State Power Authority reported that EVolve Stations dispensed over 260,000 miles of driving, which is over 115,000 more miles dispensed than the same days the previous week.

New York State Department of Transportation

New York State Department of Transportation staff and resources were fully engaged up to and through the eclipse monitoring traffic conditions, responding to emergencies and helping motorists get to their destinations safely and with as few delays as possible. As expected, New York State experienced moderate to heavy traffic volumes in certain areas along the path of totality, especially in the North Country and Adirondacks, and aside from a few crashes that were addressed quickly, there were no major reported incidents.

New York State Thruway Authority

During the five-day period from Friday, April 5 to Tuesday, April 9, over 5.5 million toll transactions were recorded. The peak day was Tuesday, April 9, with more than 1.2 million toll transactions, a 21 percent surge over the previous year. Gas sales and overall sales at the service areas almost doubled during the eclipse weekend, with the peak day being Tuesday, April 9, similar to a summer travel weekend.

In addition, charging sessions at the EV charging stations increased by over 111 percent compared to weekdays in March.

New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority

New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority facilities welcomed more than 10,000 guests, including at Whiteface Mountain, Gore Mountain, Belleayre Mountain, the Olympic Center, Mt Van Hoevenberg and the Olympic Jumping Complex. All of the facilities were open access for eclipse viewing on April 8 and held special events for visitors. The venues are primarily utilized for visitor attractions, recreation, training and competition.

New York State Office of Information Technology Services

In partnership with New York State Parks, the New York State Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) significantly improved the digital infrastructure within Niagara Falls State Park as part of a large-scale initiative that involved the deployment of a highly resilient, robust, and high-speed network to enhance visitor experiences.

In addition, ITS employees were on site before and during the event to ensure success.

“What an incredible day it was!,” acting New York State Parks Commissioner Randy Simons said. “People from around the world came to our parks and historic sites to share a once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse. Hundreds of thousands of people enjoyed a rich, memorable experience thanks to the hard work of our staff and Park Police over a two-year period.

“I’m grateful for Governor Hochul’s leadership as well as the assistance of our state and local partners for making the event a great success.”

“It often takes a village to make the extraordinary happen, and thanks to a multi-agency effort spearheaded by Governor Hochul, this week’s solar eclipse was a rousing success for New York State,” New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez added. “People across the state heeded the warnings, arriving early and staying late to enjoy the many wonders that the Empire State has to offer. In between people got to experience a natural event that was truly out of this world.

“The days, weeks and months of planning were well worth it, and I was extremely proud of the role that team NYSDOT played in this once-in-a-generation event.”

“Preparations for the eclipse began more than a year ago, and the thorough planning proved successful as there were no major disruptions on the Thruway system throughout the state,” Thruway Authority Acting Executive Director Frank G. Hoare, Esq. noted. “I want to thank Governor Hochul and her Administration for leading a collaborative, multi-agency effort that brought stakeholders together to deliver an experience that was memorable in many ways.

“I also want to express my appreciation to the countless individuals who traveled safely via the Thruway system to witness the eclipse, heeding advice to arrive early and stay late at their viewing locations.”

“The New York Power Authority’s Niagara and St. Lawrence hydropower plants were both within the solar eclipse path of totality and their visitors centers served as prime viewing locations,” New York Power Authority President and CEO Justin E. Driscoll said. “We at NYPA were pleased to offer visitors a place to watch this once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon with us — as well as a way to get there!

“The Power Authority’s Evolve NY network of EV charging stations helped ensure that EV drivers could reliably travel to Western New York and the North Country for the exciting occasion.”
