Waymire was born in Columbus, Ohio. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. In 1993, she graduated from the University of California at San Diego with a Masters of Fine Arts degree.

Waymire died from an undiagnosed cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) at her home in Los Angeles, California; her ashes spread in the Pacific Ocean.

Rather than recast her role on Star Trek: Enterprise , the show's producers opted not to use the character again.

She followed this with guest spots on such television series as Seinfeld (with Jason Alexander and Gene Dynarski ), The X-Files (in an episode of directed by Terrence O'Hara and co-starring Patrick Kilpatrick ), Judging Amy (with Spencer Garrett and Scarlett Pomers ), CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (with Lee Arenberg and Albie Selznick ), and NYPD Blue (with Gordon Clapp and Barbara J. ( Stephanie Niznik was a regular on this series, but did not appear in Waymire's episode.) Waymire also shot an episode of the Fox network series Wonderfalls , but the series was canceled before her episode aired. However, her episode can be found on the DVD set of the series. This episode was also dedicated to Waymire's memory.

Film work [ ]

Waymire made her feature film debut in Playing by Heart (1998, featuring Sean Connery , Tim Halligan , Michael Buchman Silver , Hal Landon, Jr. , and David Clennon . This was followed by a role in Buddy Boy (1999, co-starring Harry Groener and Darryl Henriques ).

Her next film was a 2000 comedy entitled Screenland Drive , on which she worked with John Fleck and Robert Pine . That same year, she appeared in the comic drama Sunset Strip , as did Jimmie F. Skaggs . She then played the female lead in the action-horror thriller Maniacts . Mel Winkler also had a role in this film.

Waymire's last films were two shorts released in 2003: Something More and The Vest . The first of these co-starred Jeffrey Dean Morgan .

Here’s Crewman First Class  Elizabeth Cutler   from  Star Trek: Enterprise . She’s an entomologist aboard the NX-01 , but also is learning to be a medic from Doctor Phlox. She is attracted to Phlox. She would be a great Science-oriented character with a secondary specialty in Medicine.

Nice. I might have gone with Medicine 3 for a medic-in-training and given her Command 3 – Cutler seemed to be pretty with it on the social skills.

Tragic story about the actress who played her. The Idea was she would develop into a regular character but the actress died suddenly.

Kellie Waymire

Highest Rated: 60% Playing by Heart (1998)

Lowest Rated: 60% Playing by Heart (1998)

Birthday: Jul 27, 1967

Birthplace: Columbus, Ohio, USA

A prolific and rising character actress with an ability to wear her character's history on her face, Kellie Waymire garnered acclaimed on the stage and was a familiar face on television before her unexpected death at a young age. Born July 27, 1967, in Columbus, Ohio, Waymire graduated from Southern Methodist University, where she won the Greer Garson Award. She studied theater at Southern Methodist University and earned a master of fine arts degree from the University of California at San Diego. She began her on-screen career in New York in 1994, playing Emily on ABC's soap opera "One Life to Live." Waymire came into her own critically in 1996 when she became the lovable dog "Sylvia" - a part first essayed by Sarah Jessica Parker when the A.R. Gurney play made its debut off-Broadway a year earlier - at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre. The role won Waymire a Drama-Logue Award for Outstanding Performance. "You will want to adopt her and never let her go," wrote the Los Angeles Times. "Waymire indeed steals every scene. She evokes a dog in all its doggy aspects, not literally, by walking on all fours, but figuratively. She quivers with the desire to be loved." The play moved from San Diego to San Francisco's Marines Memorial Theatre and Waymire earned equal raves. Waymire was a regular in respected regional theaters around the country, including the Old Globe in San Diego, the Pasadena Playhouse, the South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, La Jolla Playhouse, Circle X Theatre and Antaeus Company in Los Angeles, Seattle Repertory Theater, Milwaukee Repertory and the Rogue Theatre in New York City. The actress appeared in a revival of Noel Coward's "Present Laughter" at the Pasadena Playhouse in 1998, again winning critical praise as a debutante angling to snare her man, and, as her on-screen career took off, she also appeared at Los Angeles productions "On the Jump" and Arthur Miller's "The Man Who Had All the Luck." But television would catapault into a greater degree of recognizability; even if audiences didn't always know the actress' name, Waymire was a familiar face on several popular series. She became a regular television guest star in David E. Kelley productions, including "Ally McBeal," "The Practice" and "Snoops." She appeared on "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "The X-Files" and in the 1997 "Seinfeld" episode titled "The Blood." Waymire endeared herself to the devoted legion of "Star Trek" fans first in a 2000 guest stint on "Star Trek: Voyager" and in a recurring role as Crewman Elizabeth Cutler on "Star Trek: Enterprise" (UPN, 2001 - ). In the show's first season, she appeared in three episodes: "Strange New World," "Dear Doctor," and "Two Days and Two Nights."as a romantic interest for John Billingsley's alien Doctor Phlox. She also racked up several film credits, including "Playing by Heart" (1998) starring Sean Connery and Gena Rowlands, and "Sunset Strip" (2000). In her best known TV work, she spent six 2002 episodes on HBO's "Six Feet Under" playing Brenda's (Rachel Griffiths) prostitute friend Melissa. In 2003 she starred as spunky mother Liz Pitt in Fox's short-lived sit-com "The Pitts" and played an adoptive mother who has a disastrous visit from prospective parents Chandler and Monica in an episode of "Friends" titled "The One Where Ross is Fine." In November 2003 Waymire had been involved in a stage production of "Kate Crackernuts" at the 24th Street Theatre in Los Angeles, when she died unexpectedly of an undiagnosed illness in her home in Los Angeles' Venice Beach. The cast and crew dedicated the final two performances of the show to the actress.

Quotes

Dr. Phlox : Are you married, Crewman?

Crewman Elizabeth Cutler : Course not! I would've told you.

Dr. Phlox : I'm married.

Crewman Elizabeth Cutler : You are?

Dr. Phlox : Three times.

Crewman Elizabeth Cutler : So, you have... two ex-wives?

Dr. Phlox : I have three current wives, and they each have two husbands, not counting myself.

Crewman Elizabeth Cutler : Is that considered normal for Denobulans?

Dr. Phlox : Quite.

[the crew is watching a romantic movie]

Crewman Elizabeth Cutler : We can go if you're bored.

Dr. Phlox : No, no, I'd like to stay and see what happens.

Crewman Elizabeth Cutler : You won't be disappointed. The ending's classic.

Dr. Phlox : [chortles]  Not the film. I'm sensing a rising emotional undercurrent in the room. I'm curious to see if it culminates in some kind of group response.

Crewman Elizabeth Cutler : They don't have movies where you come from, do they?

Dr. Phlox : Well, we had something similar a few hundred years ago, but they lost their appeal when people discovered their real lives were more interesting.

[Dr. Phlox is scanning a Menk, on which the latter asks something in his language]

Ensign Hoshi Sato : He wants to know what you're doing.

Dr. Phlox : Have you learned enough Menk to explain a molecular bio-scan?

[Sato replies to the Menk in Menk]

Crewman Elizabeth Cutler : What'd you say?

Ensign Hoshi Sato : Told him the Doctor was looking inside of him.

Dr. Phlox : [about the heart]  Physiologically, it is nothing more than a very efficient pump. What could possibly make you people think it is the source of all emotion?

Crewman Elizabeth Cutler : Now, you may know about our cardiopulmonary system, but you have a lot to learn about the human heart.

15 Years Later... "Dear Doctor"

elizabeth cutler star trek

Fifteen years ago today, or January 23, 2002, marked the premiere of the Star Trek: Enterprise episode “ Dear Doctor .” It was the 13th episode of the show’s first season and it was not only a solid showcase for John Billingsley as Dr. Phlox and a strong hour of drama unto itself, but it proved to be one of the most-controversial episodes of the entire series, sparking debates about evolution and arguments over playing God with another species. Further, some very on-the-nose dialogue rubbed more than a few people the wrong way. Even its production created controversy: UPN demanded an altered denouement that landed Archer and Phlox on the same page rather than left them disagreeing.

elizabeth cutler star trek

Here are some facts, figures, anecdotes and comments about “Dear Doctor” –

Memorable dialogue #1: "Uh, something in my eye,” Tucker claimed when Phlox caught him tearing up during a screen of For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Speaking to StarTrek.com in 2013, John Billingsley noted that “Dear Doctor” was the first Phlox-heavy Enterprise episode and explained that he appreciated the fact that a Phlox episode followed the Trek tradition of tackling an issue with a lot of gray area. “I definitely agree that, just for me personally, aesthetically speaking, the episodes over the arc of four years that I thought had the most impact and held the most interest for me were the ones that actually did deal with issues,” he said. “The cloning episode (“ Similitude ”) in the third season was particularly good. There was an episode (“ Cogenitor ”) in which Trip interferes with a couple’s decision to use their quasi-servant as a person to breed for them. That was one that got people’s panties in a twist a little bit, and those are the kinds that are interesting. So I’m glad that ‘Dear Doctor’ was one that provoked some folks. It was dark. It creeped people out: an entire race of people are going to be doomed to extinction. I rather liked the darkness of Enterprise when it chose to be dark. I always wondered, ‘Gee, what would Enterprise have been like if were a cable show?’ The fans might have rebelled. It might not have been what they wanted, but to me it would have been interesting.”

elizabeth cutler star trek

“Dear Doctor” marked the second of Kellie Waymire’s three appearances as the recurring Enterprise character, crewman Elizabeth Cutler. Waymire had previously portrayed Lanya on the Voyager episode, “ Muse .” Waymire died unexpectedly in 2003 at the age of 36. Rather than recast the role of Cutler, the producers of Enterprise chose instead not to feature the character again.

Dr. Jeremy Lucas is only heard here, but Richard Riehle made the character flesh and blood by playing him in fourth-season installment, “ Cold Station 12 .”

Memorable dialogue #2:

"What do you suggest?” Archer asked Phlox. “We choose? One species over the other?"

Phlox replied, "All I'm saying is we let nature make the choice."

"To hell with nature,” Archer protested. “You're a doctor. You have a moral obligation to help people who are suffering."

James A. Contner directed “Dear Doctor.” It was the first of five Enterprise hours he helmed, and was followed by “ Carbon Creek ,” “ Minefield ,” “ The Communicator ” and “ Horizon .”

The wife-husband tandem of Maria Jacquemetton and André Jacquemetton wrote the story for “Dear Doctor.” They wrote two other stories for Enterprise and went on to work as writer-producers on Mad Men , earning two Emmy Awards during their time with the show.

elizabeth cutler star trek

Memorable dialogue #3: "Someday my people are going to come up with some sort of a doctrine,” Archer said, “something that tells us what we can and can't do out here… should and shouldn't do. But, until somebody tells me that they've drafted that directive, I'm going to have to remind myself every day that we didn't come out here to play God."

Star Trek's 100 Most Important Crew Members, Ranked

StarTrekTAA1B49H.jpg

This week, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original Star Trek TV series. To do so, we thought it might be a good time to rank all of the Star Trek crew members. Before we do, a few stipulations:

1: Only Starfleet personnel and related enlisted crews have been considered for placement on this list. (Which means that characters such as Quark, Morn, or, let's be honest, half of Deep Space Nine are absent.) Placement on the list is the result of long consideration of characters' service to Starfleet and/or Starfleet-related causes as shown or implied during their appearances, with one exception that shall not be discussed further. (Good luck figuring out which one is placed specifically due to personal bias.)

2: Only original on-screen media was considered during deliberation. If spin-off material such as novels and comic books had been included, both Captain Clark Terrell and Commander Elizabeth Shelby would be considerably higher up in the ranking. ( Star Trek: Vanguard and Star Trek: New Frontier FTW, as the famous 24th century saying goes.)

3: Your argument is invalid.
