Your guide to Orlando
The car is king in Orlando. All the major theme parks are actually outside the city proper, so if you want to visit the most magical place on earth or any other park on your bucket list, you'll need a set of wheels. Another option is the I-Ride Trolley, which trundles along International Drive and Universal Blvd., picking up and depositing passengers at several major parks and tourist attractions.
It might seem to go without saying, but if you want to get Orlando at its calmest, you'll need to travel outside of the school vacations. Both Orlando itself and Disney World are at their most hectic in late March through early April, June through August and at Christmas. January through mid-March offers a more tranquil experience, if Disney World is ever tranquil. You can expect mild weather, with daytime averages of around 65°F.
Your top packing priority for Orlando should be a camera or a phone that takes good pictures, as this is a real 'making memories' kind of destination. And don't forget to pack:
- Sneakers: Comfort comes first in Orlando, where you're sure to be doing a lot of running around, especially if you have kids with you.
- Swimming goggles: There are lots of opportunities to enjoy the water, including activities like swimming with dolphins, where seeing underwater will be a big bonus.
- A backpack: When you're out for a day at a theme park, chances are you're going to need a lot of different stuff on you. Put it in a backpack.

An Open-Top Bus Tour? Why Not!
From New York to Paris and London to Barcelona, millions of visitors have sampled the sightseeing opportunities with this iconic company, and the Orlando version will add some significant new wrinkles to this tried-and-trusted formula.
Not only will Orlando’s buses offer the same hop-on, hop-off system of the big-city variety, they will also feature a unique Theme Park Express transport service that visits each of Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando multiple times a day.
It is all part of the latest transport initiative from long-running excursion company Florida Dolphin Tours (who also offer ATD’s Florida Adventure Tour and Miami Beach Getaway, among several others), and owner Andy James told us all about it.
“I have wanted to do this for about eight years,” he explained. “Just from riding on the open-tops in London and New York – and pretty much world-wide – it was an idea that really appealed to me. Then, from conversations with our customers and looking at how to get from International Drive to the theme parks cheaply and safely, we came up with the Theme Park Express. Having done transport here for 20 years, the city needed something to allow people to get from here to Disney and here to Universal without getting on public transport or shuttles or taxis.”
The sightseeing tours and Theme Park Express are also combined with a ticket for the popular I-Ride Trolley, meaning visitors to the area can take advantage of a comprehensive transport system linking the whole of this tourist corridor.
“Now, if you’re on I-Drive and want to go to Disney Springs or Epcot, you can. Or, if you want to get from Universal to the Florida Mall, or Gatorland, or Premium Outlets, we have the bus service for you. The hop-on, hop-off bus is our crown jewel. It is fully narrated for the history and facts of the area, and having the open-top buses as an option is very cool. We have 13 double deckers in all, in three configurations, so people can enjoy the type that fits their personality best.”
The full sightseeing tour works along a set route roughly every 25 minutes, with the full circuit taking around 1hr and 45 minutes (traffic permitting). It starts from Pointe Orlando on I-Drive (at the special bus stop next to the Copper Canyon restaurant), and heads north to International Premium Outlets and the Neiman Marcus department store at Mall of Millenia, before retracing its route back onto I-Drive for the Universal Orlando bus stop.
It then goes south again along Turkey Lake Road, providing stops at the excellent Dewey’s Sports Bar, Walmart and the big Westgate Resort backing on to Sand Lake. From there, it pulls in to SeaWorld and, back on I-Drive, to Floridays Resort and Vineland Premium Outlets. Next stop is Disney Springs before the bus heads back north, revisiting the Vineland Premium Outlets and returning to Pointe Orlando via the Sheraton Vistana Villages resort and Orange County Convention Center.
It makes for a substantial ‘slice’ of this busy tourist corridor, with quite a bit to see en route, especially the stretch of Turkey Lake Road going south from Universal, and 22 stops in all (from 10am-6pm daily). It also provides a grandstand view of I-Drive itself, pretty much covering the whole stretch that most visitors see, but with a unique vantage point.
We were able to sample the route from Pointe Orlando to International Premium Outlets (one of the biggest shopping magnets for British visitors!), on both the open-top bus and one of the covered, air-conditioned variety, and can definitely attest to the great view. As we nearly always travel by car, it was fascinating to get the elevated viewpoint of some familiar sights, which included a fascinating glimpse of the demolition of Wet ’n Wild water park, which is being cleared to make way for new hotels since Universal opened its fab new Volcano Bay park.
It was amazing (and slightly sad) to see the extent of the clearance work behind the construction walls, and to see such an iconic I-Drive location reduced practically to rubble. There is still a LOT of work to do for the site to be fully demolished, but hopefully the new development will be quick to replace it and provide some smart new alternatives to stay in this area.
Although it was quite a warm afternoon, the open-top bus was definitely a more comfortable option than its closed-top cousin, and it was fun to look down on so much of I-Drive. We can certainly see this being a popular choice for those just interested in sightseeing, but it also represents a great way to tour the area and take in all the essential shopping centres along the way.
There is then an additional bus route that goes straight from Pointe Orlando to the huge shopping magnet of the Florida Mall, and on to Gatorland. Yes, you can do it via the city Lynx Bus system, but it is much slower and you don’t get the double-decker vantage point.
The Hop-On, Hop-Off Tour is also well priced at $28/adult ($20 for children) for one day, and there are also tickets for three, five, seven and even 14 days at $50, $65, $75 and $100 ($30, $50, $60 and $80 for kids), which works out at great value for the full two-week option.
Finally, the Theme Park Express option, for direct transport from I-Drive to Disney and Universal, also has ticket varieties for 1, 3, 5, 7 and 14 days, and this works especially well in conjunction with the ticket for the I-Ride Trolley, which brings guests to Pointe Orlando to catch the Express.
All in all, this is an exciting and potential-rich possibility for transport in and around the main tourist areas, and not just for those who don’t like to drive. With the fully narrated sightseeing tour, you will see quite a bit more than you can from behind the wheel of a hire car, and you might even learn some fun facts about Orlando along the way!

Things To Do Travel
Double-decker, open-top buses will do orlando sightseeing tours.
Florida Dolphin Tours is apparently bringing something new to Orlando’s tourism scene — open-top, double-decker buses for sightseeing tours.
An open top could be a hard sell during the heat and downpours of Central Florida’s hurricane season, but the lower deck is covered. The company has landed an established global franchise based in Spain — City Sightseeing — to launch the new service.
Orlando has been known more for theme-park attendance than for sightseeing tours, but the Orlando Eye, which opened in 2015, was also aimed at visitors who want to take in a broader view of the area.
The new, red and yellow buses will offer two types of service:
* Hop-on, Hop-Off service with 18 stops, such as Universal Orlando Resort, Disney Springs, Florida Mall and Premium Outlets. Tickets are $28 per day for adults and $20 for children ages 3 to 12. A week pass is $75 for adults and $60 for children. Scheduled service will also start on International Drive serving Pointe Orlando, I-Drive 360 (Orlando Eye), the Orange County Convention Center and SeaWorld.
* Theme Park Express service, which is $14 per day to Disney and $8 per day to Universal.
City Sightseeing says it was created in 1999 in Seville, Spain, starting with four tours in 2000, and is now in almost 100 locations worldwide, including New York, New Orleans, Berlin and Barcelona.
Florida Dolphin Tours has been in business for 20 years and offers bundled vacation packages in the area.

Aurora beacon-news | lineup for blues on the fox in aurora includes robert randolph, big head todd and the monsters.
This year’s lineup for Blues on the Fox in Aurora will feature some Chicago area legends, a blues artist from the United Kingdom and a man dubbed one of the top 100 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine, event organizers said.
Officials on Thursday announced the acts to perform at Blues on the Fox, set for Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15, at RiverEdge Park in Aurora.
Gates will open at 6 p.m. June 14, with Toronzo Cannon performing at 7 p.m., followed by headliner Robert Randolph at 9 p.m.
The gates on June 15 will open at 2 p.m. Wayne Baker Brooks will perform at 3 p.m., followed by Guy King at 5 p.m., Joanne Shaw Taylor at 7 p.m. and Big Head Todd and the Monsters at 9 p.m.
Jim Jarvis, chief marketing and programming officer for the Paramount Theatre and general manager of RiverEdge Park, said that the “goal this year was to mix it up. We always look for different styles.”
“One of the cool things about our lineup is everybody who is on that lineup could easily be a headliner for a Friday or Saturday night which is totally cool for us,” Jarvis said.
He noted that opening on June 14, “you’ve got Toronzo Cannon, the famous bus driver who finally got a break and took off huge in the blues and now travels the world playing it and that week he’s dropping a new album. He’s high energy, cool vocals, it’s great.”
The headliner that day is Robert Randolph, who plays pedal steel guitar and has worked with Elton John, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Dave Matthews and John Mayer, among others.
“He’s been named one of the top 100 guitarists ever in music and has been around a long time,” Jarvis said. “He brings a different energy. He’s got gospel and some blues and some rock in it and so that’s a really cool balance for the opening of Blues Fest.”
The session on June 15 begins, Jarvis said, “with a guy who could easily headline as much as anyone else with Chicago- born and raised Wayne Baker Brooks, the youngest son of blues master Lonnie Brooks.”
“He comes from one of the most famous blues families with his dad Lonnie and his brother Ronnie. If you talk about lighting a rocket – that dude walks out on stage and the energy and the vocals – everything about it is right there,” Jarvis said.
“Having him open it for us, it’s super cool that he does it,” he said. “There are some people who can headline who could never in a million years want to do something like that. That’s what cool about blues. Everybody who is a blues artist knows it’s all about the music and it doesn’t make a difference what position you’re appearing in.”
Guy King – a blues artist who moved here from Israel – will also appear that day with a voice, Jarvis said, that has a “silky, soulful, smooth sound.”
“He’s got a new album that’s dropping soon and he’s bringing this big band with a horn section and so it’s blues and jazz and R&B and a great balance,” Jarvis said.
Joanne Shaw Taylor will follow that night, a woman who Jarvis said “is the top blues person in the U.K.”
“She got discovered at 16 from the guitarist from the Eurythmics and life has never been the same for her since,” Jarvis said. “It’s the first time she’s ever played with us before, but if you look at any of the blues magazines she’s out there. Everyone talks about her.”
The two-day fest ends with Big Head Todd and the Monsters, a group that Jarvis said organizers “have been trying to get for years.”
“Those guys are such a cool mix of blues and rock and soul,” he said. “Buddy Guy himself took them out on tour with him and spent a year with them. They are a cool group to close (the fest).”
Jarvis said he is pleased with this year’s lineup for Blues on the Fox.
“Overall, I think this is one of the best, one of the coolest groups of artists we’ve had since I’ve been involved with this,” he said. “We ran this by folks working in blues magazines and blues folks in Chicago and everybody was like, wow, that’s just a great lineup.”
The event used to include five artists on Saturday, but “it became such a long day for folks,” Jarvis said, so this year will feature four acts on the final day.
Jarvis said efforts are made to make the fest “as affordable as possible” including guests being allowed to bring in their own food.
Tickets for Friday night, June 14, are $15 through May 31 and $20 starting June 1. Tickets for Saturday, June 15, are $20 through May 31 and $25 beginning June 1.
RiverEdge Park is at 360 N. Broadway in downtown Aurora, right across the street from Metra’s Aurora Transportation Center.
