The red sands of Wadi Rum have served as the backdrop for numerous movies, mainly sci-fi films such as Star Wars and Dune.

Though its history has been turbulent, Jordan, at the crossroads of Asia, Africa and Europe, is one of the safest countries in the Middle East. The capital city of Amman is a modern delight woven through with ancient Roman ruins. Find sophisticated dining and nightlife here, along with the historic Citadel on Jabal al-Qala’s Hill, the 8th-century Umayyad Palace complex and a 2nd-century Roman amphitheatre. The Dead Sea was one of the world’s first health spas. It is almost 10 times as salty as the oceans, making it quite the trick to swim in – though it’s fun trying. Nearby Mount Neboisrael – a.k.a. Mount Nebo – lends tremendous views of the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and the hills of Jerusalem beyond. In the south, visitors marvel at Petra, the ancient Nabataean city that emerges from Jordan’s sandstone escarpments. Walk through the Siq to the unforgettable Treasury, the very heart of this awe-inspiring archaeological site. Visit Aqaba on the slender Gulf of Aqaba at the top of the Red Sea, inhabited since 4000 BC. Windsurfers migrate to its glorious beaches and scuba divers to its delicate coral-reef marine park. East of Aqaba, Wadi Rum, the “Valley of the Moon,” is carved into the sandstone and granite, the largest valley in Jordan.

The Dead Sea

Nothing quite prepares you for the sensation of floating on the buoyant, salt-rich waters of the Dead Sea. For centuries, the Dead Sea has attracted travellers who revel in the healing properties of the high oxygen levels, being 360 metres below sea level and the mineral-rich mud used in the spa treatments.

The Dana Biosphere Reserve is Jordan’s largest nature reserve and is one of the best trekking area in Jordan. The elevation drops from about 1,500 metres (4,900ft) on the Qadisiyah plateau to the low-lying desert area of Wadi Araba.

Aqaba is Jordan’s premier beach resort, and is located in southern Jordan on the Red Sea. Aqaba is ideal for a final few nights on the beach, and unlike the Dead Sea is  is preferred if you like water-sports, diving or snorkelling.

The desert of Wadi Rum has some of the most wonderful scenery in Jordan - and the views just go on and on. Located between Petra and the southern beaches of Aqaba, you can visit Wadi Rum as a short afternoon visit from Petra, or even better spend a night in one of the excellent desert camps.

The ‘rose-red’ city of Petra is one of the world’s most impressive archeological sites, and a visit to Jordan usually revolves around your visit here. Petra was the capital of the ancient Nabataeans, who controlled the east-west trade before the coming of the Romans.

Visiting Jordan in January

The winter months in Jordan are very cold. Firstly, Amman and Petra quite often get snowfall and temperatures don't rise much beyond freezing. However, temperatures around Aqaba and the Dead Sea are warmer, but not usually sunbathing weather.

Visiting Jordan in February

It's still very cold in Jordan in February. As a result, we suggest trying to push your travel plans towards the end of the month.

Visiting Jordan in March

March is when Jordan emerges from the winter cold. However, much of the winter rain has passed. The sites are usually much quieter, and as a result, March a good time to explore Jordan. It is, however, still very cold in the desert, especially at night.

Visiting Jordan in April

Wildflowers coat the valleys and hillsides from April. Most importantly, temperatures have risen to make Jordan a perfect destination to visit in April.

Visiting Jordan in May

May is another perfect month to visit Jordan. Furthermore, the temperatures aren't too hot. In addition, the country is lush and green after the winter rainfall.

Visiting Jordan in June

It's starting to get hot in Jordan in June. Firstly, Amman and Petra recording temperatures of 30ºC (86ºF). As a result, this means a day walking around the site of Petra is getting pretty uncomfortable. However, it is possible if you take a hat and lots of water. In addition, we would also suggest air-conditioning in Wadi Rum.

Visiting Jordan in July

July is not a good time to consider a luxury Jordan holiday. The weather in Amman is getting well into the 30's. However, the heat is a dry rather than humid heat.

Visiting Jordan in August

Another month when we would not really consider travelling to Jordan, given the heat.

Visiting Jordan in September

September is a changeover month. Firstly, the temperatures are coming down a little. These are about 30ºC in the day in Amman and Petra, therefore bring a good hat and some water. This means you can comfortably walk around the sites. Therefore, September is certainly possible for a holiday to Jordan.

Visiting Jordan in October

October is a perfect month to visit Jordan. The temperatures in Amman and Petra are about 27-28ºC in the day. This makes it a lovely temperature to explore the sites.

Visiting Jordan in November

November is another perfect month to visit Jordan. It is a little better than early October if you like to have better temperatures to explore magical places like Petra or Jerash. We probably suggest visiting at the start of November, making for a better Jordan luxury holiday experience.

Visiting Jordan in December

December is the start of the winter season in Jordan. It is starting to get cold and snow can be falling in the country. Temperatures in Amman and Petra are on average 14ºC - 15ºC in the day, and lower at night. Temperatures on the Dead Sea are a more pleasant 20ºC. This means you can base yourself there and take day trips to Petra or Amman.

The best time for a holiday to Jordan is in the Spring and Autumn, when temperatures are in their high 20°Cs. The weather is not too warm for seeing the remarkable sites such as Jerash or Petra, where you are out in the sun for most of the day. You can easily enjoy the various hikes around the nature reserves such as Dana Biosphere Reserve.

The summer is not a good time to visit Jordan, with temperatures rising into the 40s. It is a dry heat, so some people consider it, given you have the main sites to yourself without any other tourists.

The winter months, from early December to the end of February is cold, very cold. Jordan usually sees snow, and it is the wettest months statistically. This means we usually advise pushing making your plans for a holiday to Jordan in March, April, May, October or November.

Day 1: Arrival in Amman

An Osiris Tours representative will meet with you upon arrival at the Queen Alia Airport, Amman, to facilitate the visa process and escort you through customs and immigration. Continue to the baggage claim hall and finally to the passenger pick up. Meet with your private guide and driver to transfer to your hotel.

Day 2: Amman

Today’s luxury tour to Ajlun will include a private vehicle, a driver, and a trained, certified guide. There, enjoy climbing the narrow staircases and walking through endless hallways, taking you back to a time of chivalry and faith, where you can almost imagine the sounds of battling Iron and the sight of the raging battlefield.

After visiting Ajlun, enjoy a short private ride to Jerash. Jerash is one of the best-preserved Roman provincial towns in the world. Jerash reveals a fine example of the grand, formal provincial Roman urbanism found throughout the Middle East, comprising paved and colonnaded streets, soaring hilltop temples, handsome theatres, spacious public squares and plazas, baths, fountains, and city walls pierced by towers and gates. After visiting Jerash, head back to Amman for a private city tour.

The private custom tour of Amman will include the fascinating Roman Theater and Nymphaeum that reflect the historic legacy of the city and the enchanting Citadel, which has stood since the ancient times of the Ammonites. For a more exotic and traditional experience, you will walk around in the old-downtown, also known as the local market in Amman ”Souq,” and take in the traditional sights and smells of the spice market. During this custom tour to Amman, you will have the opportunity to shop for authentic souvenirs. Enjoy a Falafel snack with the locals at famous restaurants, eat Arabic Sweets (Knafeh), and drink fruit cocktails at a local fruit stand.

Day 3: Madaba – Nebo – Petra

Today enjoy a private custom tour to Madaba. Madaba is known for its spectacular Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics. Madaba is home to the famous 6th century Mosaic Map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. With two million pieces of vividly colored local stone, it depicts hills and valleys, villages and towns as far as the Nile Delta. The Madaba Mosaic Map covers the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, which is located northwest of the city center. The church was built in 1896 AD, over the remains of a much earlier 6th century Byzantine church. The mosaic panel enclosing the Map was originally around 15.6 X 6m, 94 square meters, only about a quarter of which is preserved.

After enjoying Madaba and its incredible history, continue to Mount Nebo (15 minutes drive from Madaba). According to both the Jewish and the Christian traditions, Moses was buried in this mountain by God. However, his final resting place is unknown and shall remain so according to the Jewish and Christian tradition. Scholars continue to dispute whether the mountain currently known as Nebo is the same as the mountain referred to in the Torah. However, archaeologists worldwide have conducted endless searches for this cave and have not found a trace of its existence.

Afterward, located 10 minutes north of Petra, explore The Siq Al-Barid (Little Petra) and its temple, the miniature Siq.

After visiting Mount Nebo, we continue to Petra (a 4-hr drive from Mount Nebo) – Drive beyond Umm Sayhun, a short distance north of Petra. The road runs between wild and beautiful outcrops of rock, the color of pale honey. It is called al-Beidha in Arabic, ‘the white one.’ Al-Beidha was one of Petra’s main commercial areas, the entry and exit point for the trade routes to the north and north-west.

Later in the evening, enjoy the Petra Kitchen, which is a delightful way to round out your Jordan travel experience. Like any home kitchen, the Petra Kitchen is a relaxed, informal atmosphere where you will gather to prepare an evening meal, working alongside local women under our chef’s supervision. Each evening meal includes soup, cold and hot mezza and salads, and the main course, all typical Jordanian dishes. You will have the chance to get an inside glimpse of the secrets behind the famous regional cuisine of the Levant.

Day 4: Petra – Wadi Rum

Start your day with your private guide and private vehicle visiting Petra, the treasure of the ancient world, and the rock-carved rose-red city, which was “designed to strike wonder into all who entered it.” Petra is the legacy of the Nabataeans who settled in southern Jordan more than 2,000 years ago. Explore its refined culture and unbelievable architecture.

After visiting Petra, drive to Wadi Rum (about a 1.5-hour drive). This is a stupendous, timeless place, virtually untouched by humanity and its destructive forces.

Perched at the edge of the Zara mountain range, between hot springs and the Dead Sea basin, the Dead Sea Panoramic Complex offers some of the most spectacular views in the Kingdom. From the observation terrace, you can absorb breathtaking vistas over the Jordan Rift Valley and the Dead Sea basin and watch the sunset over the Holy Land’s mountains. There is also a large and fascinating museum devoted to the Dead Sea’s natural and cultural history, a Nature Shop, and a range of other attractions and activities suitable for both adults and children. Head to the lowest point on earth, the Dead Sea, and enjoy visiting John the Baptist’s site, where Jesus was baptized according to the Bible and medieval texts.

The Grand Jordan tour

Day 1, arrival amman (35 km).

Upon arrival, a representative from Jordan Select Tours will meet you at Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA). Transfer to hotel in  Amman . Overnight at hotel

Day 2, Amman/ Jerash/ Ajlun/ Um Qais/ Amman (225 km)

After breakfast, your private tour of Jordan starts with a visit to the Greco-Roman City of Jerash, also known as the city of the thousand columns. Jerash showcases the grandeur of Imperial Rome (and is sometimes referred to as the Pompeii of the East). It is considered one of the largest and most well-preserved sites of Roman architecture in the World outside Italy. As the most pristine Decapolis City (meaning ten cities in Greek) in the modern world, Jerash’s prosperity can be admired in the collonaded main street and lovely Oval Piazza. Visit the town of Ajlun with its fortress; one of the best-preserved examples of medieval Arab military architecture in the entire Middle East, which was once governed by Saladin. Enjoy the magnificent view of the Jordan Valley. Proceed to visit Umm Qais, a city rich with black basalt ruins of the Hellenistic era when it was known as Gadara: a hilltop site in the northwest corner of Jordan with grand views of the Golan Heights and Lake Tiberius (the Sea of Galilee). Umm Qais is also famous for being one of the ten cities that formed the Decapolis. Return to Amman. Overnight at hotel

Day 3 — Amman City Tour/ Desert Castles/ Amman (200 km)

After breakfast, departure to visit the ruins of the Amman  Roman theatre,  the  Citadel and the Umayyad Palace, the tour includes visits to the Archaeological and Folklore Museums. Free time in the old downtown area of the city for walking/shopping then transfer to the  Desert Castles . Visit  Qasr Amra , Al Azraq and  Al Kharaneh and return to Amman. Overnight at hotel.

Day 4, Amman/ Madaba/ Mt Nebo/ Wadi Mujib/ Shoback/ Petra (285 km)

After breakfast, depart Amman for a whole day tour to explore the King’s highway, which was once part of the ancient famed Silk Road. Start by visiting the Christian Town of Madaba “ The City of Mosaics ”. You will be visiting St. George Church with its mosaic map of the Holy Land from Byzantine times, and the Archaeological Park, which houses the remains of several Byzantine churches, including the amazing mosaics of the Church of the Virgin. The park complex includes a school for the restoration and conservation of ancient mosaics. Then take a detour to visit the Monastery in Mount Nebo . Proceed south via Wadi Al Mujib, a deep valley holding one of Jordan’s most breathtaking views. Visit the Shobak castle with its diverse history dated from the Byzantine to the Mamluk period. Continue south to the hotel in Petra. Overnight at hotel.

Day 5, Petra

After breakfast, enjoy a morning tour of Petra , The Rose Red City of the Nabateans and the highlight of your Jordan private tour. Start your guided tour with a horse ride up to the Siq and proceed to explore this amazing world heritage site. The Rose Red City of Petra will surely surpass your wildest expectations. Visit the higher parts of the city before returning to your hotel. Overnight at hotel.

Day 6, Petra/ Beida/ Wadi Rum (140 km)

After breakfast enjoy a late morning transfer to Beida , also known as Little Petra, and the place where the Nabateans used to entertain their guests. Day 2 , Amman Special City Tour (24 km)

In the morning, start your private Jordan tour by enjoying a traditional breakfast at a local restaurant as everyday Jordanians do. Visit the King Abdullah mosque and drive to the downtown area to visit the ruins of the Amman Roman theatre, the Citadel and the Umayyad Palace. The tour includes visits to the Archaeological and Folklore Museums and a short walk through the souks and markets culminating in a visit to the Jordan Museum. Explore the city further and proceed to the Rainbow Street, one of Amman’s oldest suburbs with very interesting architecture from the 20th century. Day 3 , Amman/ Madaba/ Mt. Nebo/ Dead Sea (80 km)

You will be visiting St. George Church with its mosaic map of the Holy Land from Byzantine times, and the Archaeological Park, which houses the remains of several Byzantine churches, including the amazing mosaics of the Church of the Virgin. The park complex includes a school for the restoration and conservation of ancient mosaics. Take a detour to Mount Nebo, the site of the endearing monastery. Depart to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on the surface of the earth, for a swim in its warm salty waters. Overnight at hotel.

Day 4 , Dead Sea/ Petra Visit (200 km)

After breakfast, depart the Dead Sea south to Petra for a full day visit of the city. We will start our journey to explore Petra, aptly described as the “rose-red city, half as old as time”. The ancient city was founded by the Nabateans 2000 years ago. Its massive architectural structure and its multicoloured stones are an incredible attraction. The visit of the ancient Nabatean capital starts on horseback, followed by a walk through the Siq, a long narrow fissure between two overhanging cliffs. Towards the end of the Siq, you will be spellbound by Petra’s most famous monument; the Treasury. The tour then proceeds to gradually unfold the mysteries of the city. Overnight at hotel.

Day 5 , Petra/ Beida/ Wadi Rum (130 km)

Classical Group Jordan Tour - 8 Days (Private-tailormade)

This was an excellent tour which we undertook with just one other solo traveller. We all travelled in the comfort of an air-conditioned saloon car and felt safe and well cared for by our driver. The standard of accommodation improved as the tour advanced (it was really only our opening couple of nights in a man that were a little disappointing). I mean disappointment was that we did not have a guide for any of the sites other than Petra. The tour information indicated that we had an English speaking driver and guide throughout and this was not really the case and detracted from our enjoyment of some of the sites.

In January we went on a tour of Jordan organized by Odynovo tours - best travel decision of our life! From the moment we stepped off the plane and were greeted by a friendly gentlemen who took care of our visa and getting us to the hotel, we continued to have one great experience after another. We saw all the best bits of Jordan with our own private and most excellent driver (Wasim Alzreqat) for our visit. He was relaxed, efficient, knowledgeable and a super travel companion - it was like going to places with a friend. We spent 9 days touring Amman, Jerash, Madaba, Mt. Nebo, Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea and then back to Amman. The entire experience was incredible - Jordan and it's people are wonderful. The whole country is a testament on how people of all faiths can get along. We felt very safe and were treated wonderfully, and the sights and food were incredible. We have travelled all over North & Central America, Europe, the Caribbean and I have felt safer here than many places I've been to in the USA, Mexico & Costa Rica. The highlight of the trip was Wadi Rum but Jerash and the Dead Sea are wonderful as well. Petra is a bit too touristy for so it's best to go early in the day to avoid the crowds - also if you're in shape it is worth taking the trail on top of the mountains to see everything from above. The weather in January 2019 was perfect (sunny with 20-21 Celsius every day) and the hotels, meals, sights, and people were really something every traveller should experience at least once in their life! All the hotels we stayed at were excellent, the food was amazing, and so much history! Spending the night in the Wadi Rum desert is not to be missed, and if you have the chance to ride a camel go for it. We also took a tour with a private driver into the desert and saw where Lawrence of Araibia hid in his cave, where the movie Mars was filmed, and had a little fire with fresh brewed tea while watching the sunset - too beautiful for words. I would do the entire trip again tomorrow!

Our travel consultant Wade who put together the entire itinerary was knowledgeable and patient, answering all our queries in a timely manner. Traveling to Jordan during a tough time seemed risky, but we're happy to say everything was safe and normal. We loved Petra, floating in the Dead Sea, and trying tasty Jordanian food like Hummus and Mansaf. Wadi Rum was an awesome experience, and our stay was fantastic!

• Bring good walking shoes and breathable clothing; it’s hot and you’re going to be doing a lot of walking.
• Water is safe to drink, although it is heavily chlorinated so it might taste bad; just to be safe, stick with bottled water and pasteurized milk.
• Be aware of your sun limits; the sun is brutal and you could get badly sunburnt, or worse, pass out from heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
• If you need it, healthcare in Jordan is generally good, and there are hospitals in big cities and clinics in smaller villages.

Even though the official language of Jordan is Arabic, English is widely spoken in the country. Besides Arabic, English and a number of minority languages, you can also find French and German-speaking people in Jordan. 

March to May are the busiest tourist months to visit Jordan. September to February is also ideal for travel due to the generally good weather, except for the biting cold nights in the desert areas. It is not advised to travel to Jordan between June and August unless you are prepared to deal with intense heat. However, the  best time to visit Jordan  is between March and May, when the weather is perfect, even when you want to travel to the desert.

Jordan is one of the safest countries in the Middle East. There is a robust security arrangement throughout the country. Apart from petty theft and crime, as are common in most countries, foreigners have nothing serious to fear while traveling in Jordan.
