Day Trip in Oslob (Cebu): Things to Do + Itinerary

Oslob is a coastal town in the southern area of Cebu, popularly known for its whale shark activity where you can swim up close with whale sharks in the ocean. It’s a must-visit when you’re in the province. We visited here on a day trip during an outreach trip. Here’s our Day Trip Guide to Oslob, Cebu!

P.S. If you’re exploring the south, don’t forget to read about our Day Tour in Moalboal & Kawasan Falls and Travel Guide to Moalboal .

From Cebu City

From badian, update: why we don’t recommend this anymore, sumilon island, tumalog falls, sunset viewing in osmena peak, reminders and tips, budget and expenses, what to read next:, how to get to oslob (cebu).

There are different ways to get to Oslob.

From Cebu City, travel time is 2.5-3 hours.

  • From Cebu South Terminal, ride a bus to Bato via Lilo-an (P155 per person, 3 hours). Inform the driver know to drop you off at the whale shark activity site or resort you’re heading to.
  • Alternatively, you can also ride a van (P150 per person, 2.5 hours) at the GT Express Terminal along Junquera Street. Get off at Oslob town proper and then ride a tricycle or habal-habal to the whale shark activity site.
  • Ride a bus to Bato and get off at the last stop. Transfer to a bus bound for Cebu City and get off at Oslob. Let the driver know you are going to the whale shark activity site or else you will be dropped off at the town center (10 km away), where you will need to take another ride.
  • You can also rent a scooter for a minimal fee. This is a good option for budget travelers who are exploring the south for a few days.

Oslob Day Tour itinerary

Here is a sample itinerary for your day tour in Oslob.

7AM – 8AM Whale shark activity 8:30AM – 11AM Sumilon Island Lunch 1PM – 3PM Tumalog Falls 4:30 – 5:30PM Sunset at Osmena Peak 6PM End of tour

If you’re coming from Cebu City, it’s best to leave at 3 or 4AM so you’ll arrive early in the morning.

Here are the activities you can do on a day trip to Oslob.

Whale shark watching

Oslob is mostly known for its whale shark activity. Here, you have to ride a boat to an area where you can see the whale sharks up close. Sightings are guaranteed all year round.

The whale shark activity is located in Barangay Tan-Awan. Once you get here, you can find resorts offering boat tours to the whale shark area. The activity starts with an orientation where you will be reminded (1) to not touch the whale sharks and (2) to avoid wearing sunscreen.

Guidelines on whale shark watching in Oslob

First of all, we were amazed that the whale shark area isn’t very far from the shore. In fact, we could already see the tour boats before boarding.

The experience was great. The whale sharks glide in the water in ones or twos and threes, mouths hanging open. It was difficult to swim though since the currents were strong. Our guides were helpful in taking pictures. I was wearing a lifevest so one guide pushed me down the water while another took photos with our action camera.

Swimming with whalesharks in Oslob, Cebu

What I noticed though is that it was easy to touch or hit the whale sharks unintentionally, due to the strong current and the fact that the whale sharks swim too close to humans.

  • The activity starts from 5:30AM to 12 noon only. It’s best to get in the wharf early in the morning before the current gets strong.
  • The activity is good for 30 minutes only.
  • Bring an action camera. If you don’t have any, you can rent one with CD copy for P550.

After this trip, I’d read about whale shark watching in Oslob and learned that it is harmful to the whale sharks for various reasons . If you still want to have a whale shark encounter, a good alternative is that in Donsol, Sorsogon, where whale sharks are left in the wild.

Here’s further reading on ethical animal encounters around the world.

Sumilon Island is a private island famous for its picturesque sand bar. Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort is located here, but it is also open for day passes.

The island is just several minutes away from the main beach in Tan-Awan. You can arrange a boat trip to Sumilon Island.

Sumilon Island in Cebu

We stayed here for a few hours, and it was time well spent. The water was clear and from there were different shades of blue.

Sumilon island clear water

  • Day pass starts from 7AM to 5PM.
  • If you’re on a day tour, you can only stay in the sand bar area.
  • There are no stores here. Bring packed lunch or food from the stores or restaurant in Oslob’s beachfront.

Tumalog Falls is a 15-minute ride from the resort area. Ride a habal-habal to get here.

Tumalog Falls is an 80- to 100-meter high waterfall with umbrella-like formations, similar to Ulan-Ulan Falls in Biliran . The water falls gently into a man-made pool, which then flows down to smaller pools. The pool is a beautiful light blue. It’s shallow so it’s safe for kids, but it’s also freezing cold.

All I can say is that Tumalog Falls is lovely. It’s high so it’s difficult to capture whole in the camera. It’s also one of the best waterfalls in the Philippines I’ve seen as of yet. I highly recommend including this stop in your Oslob day trip itinerary.

Interestingly, I googled Tumalog Falls after the trip and noticed that the cement pool walls were a recent addition. I think I would’ve preferred it au naturale, but I understand that the local government also has to make it more “palatable” and “easy” for visitors. Anyway, as long as it’s clean and properly managed, I’m happy.

Tumalog Falls in Cebu

Sunset viewing in Osmena Peak is a wonderful way to finish your day trip in Oslob.

To get here, ride a bus bound for Cebu and ask the driver to drop you off at at Dalaguete (pronounced Dalaget), which is three towns away. From there, hire a habal-habal or multicab to take you to Osmena Peak.

Osmena Peak is one of the highest points in Cebu. It’s famous for its natural rugged peaks and a favorite stop for those who want to see the sunrise or sunset.

Osmena Peak in Cebu

You can choose to hire a guide. The trek is relatively easy and takes only 20 minutes to reach the peak.

Here are some reminders and tips when planning your Oslob day tour:

  • If you have more time, you can also visit Oslob Heritage Park , where you can explore a museum and Spanish-era buildings. Entrance is free.
  • This is the usual day trip itinerary in Oslob. An alternative to the afternoon schedule includes visiting Tumalog Falls and then heading to the town of Samboan to visit its 3 waterfalls: Aguinid Falls , Dao Falls , and Binalayan Falls . However, you won’t have time to trek to Osmena Peak. (Another nearby waterfall is Kawasan Falls , although this one is best visited on a half-day tour.)
  • This day trip can be done DIY. You can also booked packaged tours online.

Here are the current rates ( Updated as of 2020 ):

In a group of 5 people, a safe budget is P1400-1500 per person .

Thanks so much for this! I am planning my first trip with my sister and filipino boyfriend to do this travel together in south cebu, looking forward to it! Thanks

I’m planning a day tour for Oslob for my family. Would you know any beach resorts around the area where we can wash up?

2traveldads

What a beautiful place and an incredible experience! I feel like 4 meters is still too close for the creatures’ own comfort though, when considering their size in comparison. Was this area baited/krill-stocked to attract the sharks? I’ve read of that being done, which would be my only concern with visiting.

I think so, yes. It turns out there’s a controversy about whale shark watching, with environmentalists saying it changes the natural behavior of the sea animals. I think whale shark watching in Donsol, Sorsogon, is a good alternative to Oslob.

Adrenaline Romance

Amazing trip! On your next trip, try the other side as suggested by Mustachio. There’s snorkeling and scuba diving in Moalboal, falls hopping in Samboan, and more! Cebu has so many adventures and sites to visit. 🙂

Next time we’ll do that! 🙂 We only had a day to spare because we were on a connecting flight to Siargao then.

Have you been to the southwest municipalities in Cebu? I recommend boating/snorkeling in Moalboal, canyoneering in Alegria (though I haven’t tried this myself), going to the waterfalls in Samboan, Ginatilan, and Badian.

Haven’t yet! This is literally the only time I’ve been in Cebu haha. 🙂 But I’ve been seeing so much photos of Moalboal, Alegria and the waterfalls you’ve mentioned I think it’s time I actually schedule another visit.

I love the beach and the falls, swimming w/ whale sharks seems fun, but according to studies, it disrupted the normal behaviour of this gentle creatures.

I never been to the southern part of Cebu, I’ve been planning to visit oslob ever since. I love to do diving with Butandings too that’s sooo awesome. Lovely beach plus falls. Ohhh Cebu has a lot to offer. By the way, I explored the northern part of the Province when I went there 🙂

donnamariebb

The beach in Sumilon looks amazing!

Yes it does. 🙂 We plan to go back and stay in the resort.

Is Whale Shark Watching In Oslob Worth Visiting? [Oslob Travel Guide]

Oslob

After chasing sardines at Moalboal, I moved to Oslob for the whale shark watching. In the last few years, Oslob became a big hit in tourism industry not just in Cebu, but in the entire Philippines. Who wouldn’t want to get up close with the world’s largest fish, right?

But swimming with Oslob Cebu whale sharks comes with big controversy. There are several groups who are against feeding them. If you ask me, it’s one of the most wonderful water activities I ever did, so it’s your call if want to swim with them or not.

Oslob Cebu Itinerary

It was one hot afternoon, I was patiently waiting on a highway in Moalboal for a bus bound in Oslob. I tried to look for a coffee shop or an air-conditioned restaurant, unfortunately, there’s none. My only refuge was the big pharmacy across the street. I stayed there for a couple of minutes, pretending that I’m looking for something, but in reality, I just needed to cool down.

Finally, the bus arrived. I asked the driver if it’s bound to Oslob and he said, “Just hop on, this bus will stop at the terminal, then you can take another bus going to Oslob”. We stopped somewhere at Santander; travel time is 2 hours for 85php. From the terminal, I transferred to another bus bound for Cebu City and dropped off at Poblacion, Oslob. Travel time is just an hour for only 40php.

Where to Stay in Oslob

I booked my room at Cronin Residences.  I intentionally chose to stay in the Poblacion area to be in a lively place. It’s more of a private residence than a resort so the ambiance is homey and it’s even beachfront.

It’s only a 5-minute walk to the public market, Municipal Hall, Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church, and Museo Oslob. These spots are perfect for an afternoon walk around the town.

Cronin Residences

I got a Deluxe Nipa cottage for around 1,200php per night good for 2. The room is basic, nothing fancy but I appreciate the relaxing atmosphere. The place is quiet all day giving me my much-needed rest. Another reason that I booked this place is because of its strong Internet connection.

Check Rate and Availability

Generally, the Internet connection in Cebu is weak so having a strong connection in my room is heaven because I had a lot of online tasks needed to be done. They also have a dorm-type room for backpackers.

If you’re looking for a place to hang out, they have a nice terrace where you can sit and relax while enjoying the view of the ocean. Their staff are accommodating, they help me arranged my whale shark and Tumalog falls tour. If I needed something or had a question, Karen the daughter of the owner is just one call away.

What to do in Oslob

I walked around the town to observe life in Oslob. Along the way, I saw a church with amazing century-old beauty. There is a wide park facing the sea. I saw people sitting on the grass, running kids, some were playing volleyball, others were biking. Life in this part of Cebu is so simple and you will see that people are happy.

There are few visitors having a photo-op at some ruins, and visiting their museum. A walk around the simple and peaceful town in Oslob will give you a glimpse of its Spanish history.

I remember asking Karen on where is the best place to eat here, she said, “Before sunset, food stalls open up by street in front of the Public Market. There’s a variety of grilled food to choose from”.

Oslob

With this in mind, I went to the street in the afternoon and discovered the best place to eat in Oslob. In fact, I had 6 sticks of different grilled food and my favorite is the grilled chorizo. You guys should try it.

The next day, I woke up early to prepare for the highlight of my South Cebu trip, and that is to swim with the whale sharks. I asked Karen if there’s any other place to visit, she said, “We have Tumalog falls here in Oslob, although it’s not that famous and beautiful as Kawasan. I think you will still like it”.

Kuya Ritchel was my habal-habal driver. We started our tour at around 7:00 a.m. going to the falls. Travel time from Poblacion is around 20 minutes. From the gated entrance, you have an option to take another habal-habal going down or walk; I opted the former.

The motorcycle ride is only 50php roundtrip. I thought that it’s far, turns out it only takes a 5 to 10 minutes of walking. If you also want to get the service of my habal-habal driver, you may contact kuya Ritchel at this number, 0915-258-9499.

I paid 250php for his driving service, this includes pickup and drop-off from the resort, and the ride to Tumalog falls and whale watching center.

Entrance to the falls is 20php. It’s a good idea to come here early because there are only a few people during this time. The water is like Gatorade blue that I found myself wondering how could this happen. It’s simply amazing.

Tumalog Falls

I just stayed for a couple of minutes watching the white water cascade from a series of rocky outcrops, giving the effect that there are several waterfalls rather than just one. Some people describe it like a “white curtain” covering the whole rock wall.

Then it flowed on its way, nonchalant as if nothing had occurred. Only a few falls impressed me so much and Tumalog falls is definitely part of my top 5. If you’re visiting Oslob, make sure to include this on your list.

Tumalog falls is just a short distance away from the whale shark watching center. I was shocked when I arrived seeing hundreds of people wanting to swim with them. September is a low season, imagine this place in summer. Unbelievable.

The first step is registration, Oslob Cebu Whale Shark Price for locals is 500php and 1,000php for foreigners. There’s a short orientation where they reminded people to never touch the whale shark and to keep a distance of at least 4 meters. There is a penalty for those who will violate the rules. After a quick orientation, fall in line to pay, you will get a number and wait for the organizer to call you.

In my estimate, there are about 10 small boats that go at the same time, each one can take 8 passengers. Tourists are only given only 30 minutes to swim with the sharks. As we approached the feeding area, the smell of the air becomes fishy. I found out it’s coming from the shrimp that was being fed to the whale shark.

Whale Shark Watching

I haven’t even gone to the water yet when I saw one of the whale sharks. I literally said, “WTF!” because it’s so big. I never encountered this huge in my entire life until that moment. I saw and swam with at least 3 whale sharks around our boat.

I observed them and they seem to be in good condition, but again it’s just my observation. I tried to look for any wounds because one concern of the people who are against it is that whales are getting wounded from the boats.

I checked if people are touching them, gladly no one did so. And I wouldn’t dare to touch them not just because there is a penalty but they are really big and it was a bit intimidating to get close to them.

The boatmen are hospitable and helpful. They assisted all their guests to have great photos with the whale sharks. My 30 minutes swimming with them is surely one of my most memorable experiences in all of my travels. If you’re planning to visit they are open from 6:00 a.m. till 12:00 noon only.

So the big question is, is it worth visiting? Definitely yes, but if this is something against your belief, I am not going to convince you to do it. You can still visit Oslob and enjoy the place without doing the whale shark watching.

They have amazing falls and an interesting town proper. Also, Sumilon Island is just one boat away.

So many things to see in this part of Cebu. I think we passed by this place on the way to Santander Port. As for whale shark watching, well, I’m actually a little torn. My curiosity tells me I should see them. Another part of my brain, one which tells me to respect nature’s course, says otherwise.

High season is from December to May, with Christmas, New Year and Easter being the busiest times. The low season and rainy season runs from June to November.

However, whale sharks can be spotted year-round.

For a more peaceful experience, it’s best to visit on weekdays when there are fewer crowds.

Getting to Oslob

From cebu city.

To get to Oslob from Cebu, you can take a bus or hire a private car. Buses depart from Cebu South Bus Terminal and take approximately 3-4 hours to reach Oslob. The fare is around 200-300 PHP (4-6 USD) per person. Alternatively, you can hire a private car or van for a more comfortable and convenient ride.

From Dumaguete

You can take a ferry to Liloan, Santander, which is about 30 minutes away from Oslob by bus or private car. The ferry ride takes approximately 30-45 minutes and the fare is around 70-100 PHP (1.5-2 USD) per person. From Liloan, you can take a bus or hire a private car to reach Oslob.

Controversial Tourism Attraction

Tourist boats searching for Whale sharks in Oslob

The whale shark interaction in Tan-awan village attracts a large number of tourists every day. However, this activity is controversial as the sharks are hand-fed, which can alter their behavior and negatively impact the ecosystem, according to many scientists.

For those seeking a more natural experience, the whale shark interaction programs in Donsol may be preferable.

Despite the controversy, the tourism industry in Oslob provides benefits to the local community and ensures that the sharks remain alive, rather than ending up as dead fins in storage facilities across Asia.

Swimming with Whale Sharks

Tourist swimming with whale shark in Olsob

The experience of interacting with whale sharks typically begins early in the morning, where visitors receive a quick briefing before boarding outrigger boats that take them to the interaction area located around 50 meters from shore. Once there, visitors are allowed to swim with the whale sharks for a limited time of 30 minutes and are required to adhere to strict rules that include no touching, no riding, no flash photography, and keeping a safe distance of at least 2 meters away from the sharks.

Diving with whale sharks is also possible at an additional surcharge. Visitors who are certified divers can explore the underwater world and swim alongside these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat, creating an even more unforgettable experience.

Whale sharks are the largest species of fish, known to grow up to 12 meters in length, yet despite their enormous size, they pose no danger to humans. These docile creatures are slow-moving and feed only on tiny micro-organisms. Swimming alongside these gentle giants is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Beyond Whale Sharks: Exploring Cebu's Natural Wonders and Adventure Activities

Day trip to Kawasan Falls Day trip from Cebu

In addition to the whale shark experience, there are other activities that visitors can enjoy to further enhance their trip.

Sumilon Island

Sumilon Island, for example, is a stunning coralline island surrounded by a fringing coral reef. The marine sanctuary off Sumilon Island is widely regarded as one of the best-preserved in the Philippines, with a 100-meter wide fringing reef and sharp drop-off down to depths of 30 meters. This makes it perfect for snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking.

Kawasan Falls

Kawasan Falls, on the other hand, is a series of three waterfalls, with the largest cascade dropping an impressive 20 meters into a massive swimming hole. Canyoneering at Kawasan Falls is considered one of Cebu’s most extreme adventures.

Tumalog Falls

Another must-visit attraction is Tumalog Falls, located just a 10-minute drive from Oslob. This breathtaking waterfall features an impressive swimming hole surrounded by imposing cliffs, making it an ideal spot for a refreshing dip.

The 24-hectare Sumilon Island is located in the southeastern edge of Oslob, Cebu. Much like the butanding, Sumilon Island and its surreal sandbar are some of the top reasons travelers make the trip to Oslob, Cebu. It makes one of the most beautiful beaches in Cebu .

After a light lunch, you can walk the entire perimeter of the sandbar, swim in the azure waters, and take breathtaking photos for the ‘gram.

On the main island, you’ll find a small cliff to climb where you can get better photos of the entire sandbar. But most people just stay in the sandbar area to swim, snorkel, and take a lot of photos.

If you’re thinking of proposing to someone this year and you happen to be planning a trip to Oslob, Cebu, the sandbar at Sumilon Island is one of the most romantic and magical places to do it!

There are a lot of places in the Philippines you can go to for a fun kayaking experience. One of them is the natural lagoon on Sumilon Island that is surrounded by towering mangroves.

The area feels secluded, away from the hustle and bustle of island living, and kayaking is a low impact water sports that you can try regardless of skill level.

You can kayak on your own, with a buddy or a guide and navigate the calm waters of this natural, almost secret lagoon in Sumilon Island.

If you’re traveling with family, the lagoon is a nice, safe place where the children can have supervised play in the waters. And when you’ve had your fill, you can move on to explore the caves.

Cave tours are very popular in the Philippines. There are several natural caves on Sumilon Island that local fishermen use as a temporary refuge from storms.

In fact, the word sumilon means "to take refuge" and the fishermen were actually the ones who gave the island its name.

You'll hear people talking about the Yamashita Cave, which actually refers to a group of caves, explored and unexplored, which are believed to be the hiding places of ill-gotten wealth of former Filipino president and dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

Dark and secluded among the banyan trees, you’d need some gear, including a headlamp, to explore the cave further.

There’s also a rock shelter on Sumilon Island with a statue of the Virgin Mary. The area has been turned into a grotto and many people come here to pray.

Sumilon Island has a simple, rugged lighthouse that you can climb. On top, you’ll get a fantastic 360-degree view of the entire island.

The sandbar looks even more surreal from the top. If you’re into photography, this is one of the top places to get those money shots.

Back then, the corals here were heavily damaged by the dynamite fishing activities of Muro Ami fishermen.

The combined efforts of the locals, research groups, and the Bluewater Sumilon Resort , the 39-hectare dive sites are back to its former glory as well as the aquatic species.

2. Swim at Tumalog Falls

People enjoying the Tumalog falls in Oslob, Cebu

There are many waterfalls in Oslob, Cebu but the most majestic of all is the Tumalog Falls.

This picture-perfect natural wonder is a classic example of what they call a horsetail waterfall. The descending waters are always in contact with the rocks creating a beautiful, curtain-like or veil effect.

Tumalog Falls is so popular that you’ll see people taking photos everywhere. Every angle is just picture-perfect and the waters are cool for swimming.

Tumalog Falls is part of many Oslob tours. One of the best ways to reach it is by riding a habal-habal. You can stay here for a few hours and just cool off after a long day of walking and exploring.

The Baluarte Ruins is tucked away on Sumilon Island, next to the lighthouse. It’s the remnants of six 19th century Spanish watchtowers that dates back to 1788.

Back then, people use the baluarte (which means watchtower) to warn the villagers of Moro raiders and bandits. It’s one of the most photographed attractions in Oslob.

Cuartel Ruins in Oslob, Cebu

Today, the unfinished structure stands as one of Oslob’s heritage sites. Beautiful, unfinished, and eerie at night. But during the day, the Cuartel Ruins provides a rustic background for pre-wedding photos.

The Mainit Springs in Cebu is located in the municipality of Malabuyoc, but since it is close to Oslob, many people make the side trip to explore it. Travelers swear that it’s one of the most beautiful hot springs in Cebu that you experience.

It is part of many experiences in Cebu and you can inquire at your hotel/hostel on how to get there. It is both accessible via bus, a short 20-minute walk up a small hill, or just rent a habal-habal.

The water temperature ranges but sometimes, it can go up to 42 degrees. Be careful and take your time lowering your body into the hot water. If you’re visiting the Mainit Spring, make sure you come early because it closes at mid-afternoon.

In Oslob, the Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church dates back to the 1830s. Aside from laying witness to centuries of oppression, war, and distress, the church had been ravaged by two fires.

The fire incident in 2008 destroyed the church’s interiors. Amazingly, the image of its patron saint was spared because it was enclosed in a glass case. The 73 icons located near the centuries-old bell tower also survived.

Today, you can visit the newly renovated Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church. Despite being relatively new, its history of birth and survival will definitely leave you in awe like the other churches.

After your trip to the Cuartel Ruins, do stop by at Museo Oslob to see some of the artifacts and antiques on display. These are the items you can find in one’s home, like old pianos, old furniture, and old mirrors.

But these items were contributed by the locals, which make up their town’s history. Like most of the museum tours in the Philippines, you can visit Museo Oslob for free.

Oslob Tour | Sumilon Island and Whaleshark Watching

Dea Mariano

One of South Cebu’s major destinations is the beautiful coastal town of Oslob. We went here right after our Moalboal day tour to visit Sumilon Island before sunset and go whaleshark watching the next morning. It’s actually our second time here (first time was 7 years ago) but it honestly felt like a new experience!

We arrived at Oslob around 2pm. We did not have a booked stay so we just looked for it right on the spot. A local security guard (forgot his name huhu) directed us to Bangcogon Resort & Restaurant. He just called someone on the phone then after a few minutes a shuttle picked us up from where we were (thanks kuya!)

oslob

We booked an overnight stay and a boat ride to Sumilon Island (we paid 600 each for the roundtrip boat ride to Sumilon Island). A staff assisted us to our room then we changed clothes and prepped for the tour right away. We left for Sumilon Island and arrived there around 3pm.

The island girl in me got mesmerized as if it was my first time. Well, would you blame me with such a stunning view? The sight of an island with lush vegetation, white sandy beach, and vibrant turquoise water. A cliché description but unique actual experience!

oslob travel

Since the tour is only until 4pm, we only had an hour for exploration and picture taking. It was high tide so the whole sandbar was not exposed. Still, such a splendid sight!

oslob travel

We went up to access the bridge, only to find out it’s closed. We just savored the view from up there, and Jec asked me to go back to the sandbar so he could take photos.

oslob travel

An hour has passed and we almost lost track of time. It was cloudy at the west side, blocking the view of the setting sun.

Our boatmen called us as it was already time for departure. We only had a very little time at Sumilon Island but we greatly appreciate our time there.

We went back to Bangcogon Resort, washed up, and took some rest until dinner time. Around 7pm, dinner was served!

bangcogon resort oslob cebu

We had Sinigang na Hipon, Grilled Liempo, and a creamy chicken on top of french fries that I forgot the name on the menu. Coolest part is that the rice was served in a tiny kaldero, somehow making anyone feel guilty as if you ate a full kaldero of rice!

Oslob Whaleshark Watching

The next morning we woke up around 5am to prepare for our whaleshark watching tour. The whaleshark watching in Oslob starts at 6am and ends at 12nn, and each session lasts about 30 minutes. We opted to arrive for first batch because we need to leave Oslob as early as possible for our Sirao Garden visit.

After paying fees (we paid 500 each) and a brief orientation, a paddle boat took us to the snorkeling/dive site together with other tourists. Our boat was not yet docked but the whalesharks were already showing up! They actually look like a shark when on the water’s surface because of their fin. Well, they’re alike since they are both fish, but whalesharks are gentle and never attacked humans. Also, they have white spots that are unique for each one of them, just like our fingerprints. How cool?!

oslob whale shark watching

Our local guide was very game for picture taking and he’s the one to instruct us when to go under the water to take our photos and videos. So we only had to enjoy our experience and not mind the hassles of documenting it! He also kept on reminding us to never touch the whalesharks to protect them.

The whalesharks tend to swim close to us as if they consider us as a specie of their own. It’s funny how we still get shocked and a little panicky even though we know they are harmless every time them come close! Well, I think you will understand only after you witness their massive appearance in actual! There were a lot more whalesharks that time compared to our experience 7 years ago (around 3 whalesharks only). I think they’re more than 10!

They feed the whalesharks with alamang (tiny shrimps) to attract them. I’m not an expert but in my opinion I don’t think it harms them. Maybe alamang won’t make them full so they still need to hunt in the wild after 12nn. After all, this tourism activity greatly helps in the local livelihood as long as it’s being regulated properly by the local government.

oslob cebu whale shark encounter

It was a good 30 minutes with the gentle giants! After buying souvenirs and prepping up, we checked out early from Bangcogon Resort and left Oslob around 9am. We went straight to Sirao Garden in Cebu City which I will share next!

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Oslob, Cebu

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Oslob in Cebu, Philippines

Oslob is a small town on Cebu Island’s southern coast that includes 21 villages, including Tan-awan. Because of the whale sharks that swim near the coast, it has been a domestic and international tourism hotspot since 2011. But wait, there’s more! This charming city is gifted with beautiful beaches! This post will give you a lot of reasons to visit Oslob in Cebu, as well as travel and budget tips to help you plan your trip.

I have a few friends who have previously visited here, and they said it was an incredible experience. I’d been to Cebu many times but hadn’t gone to Oslob, so in March 2019, I scheduled a trip with Cebu Pacific (I’d had a few bad experiences with them but decided to give them another try – this time, no flight cancellation/delay, hurrah!). Guilly’s Place is a fantastic choice for my lodging since whenever I travel, I ALWAYS choose to stay near train stations or bus stops (or anyplace I can quickly catch a ride), so it’s a good choice for me. I rented a single bedroom since I simply need somewhere to sleep, take a bath, and keep my backpack.

Tumalog Falls in Oslob Cebu

How to Get to Tumalog Falls

If you are coming from Mactan Airport or Cebu City, take a cab to South Bus Terminal – CSBT . Upon arrival, ask the guard at the entrance gate where you can queue to buy a bus ticket to Oslob. You should take the bus bound for Bato via Oslob. Ceres Line buses leave every 30 minutes starting at 3:00 AM. The fare is about 200 PHP (~4 USD).

Just inform the driver or conductor to be dropped off at the intersection going to Tumalog Falls in Oslob or at Tan-awan Beach. Then, take a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) or tricycle to Tumalog Falls. The fare is 50 PHP (~50 PHP).

If you are coming from Moalboal or Badian , just flag down any bus bound for Bato along the highway. Upon reaching Bato Bus Terminal, take a bus bound for Cebu City via Oslob. Tell the driver or conductor to drop off at the intersection going to Tumalog Falls. Then, take a habal-habal or tricycle to Tumalog Falls.

Tumalog Falls Fees 2023

The entrance fee to Tumalog Falls is 50 PHP (~1 USD). The use of a small hut is 350 PHP (~6.5 USD). Roundtrip habal-habal ride to Tumalog Falls is 50 PHP (~1 USD).

Tumalog Falls Opening Hours 2023

Tumalog Falls is open daily from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Best Time to Visit Tumalog Falls

The best time to visit Tumalog Falls is in the morning, from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM when there are no crowds. If you come before it closes, visitors may have dispersed by that time too.

If you want to enjoy Tumalog Falls in all its beauty, best to come during the rainy season which is around June to November. These months are also the typhoon season, so do check the weather from time to time. When we visited, it was the start of the rainy season, so the water flow was abundant.

Nevertheless, you will still enjoy the fall in the dry months of March to May but expect the water flow to be sprinkling for the most part. Whatever season you plan to visit Tumalog Falls in Oslob, you will surely enjoy it.

Trekking Tumalog Falls in Oslob, Cebu

Upon arrival at the entrance or parking lot, you have the option to walk or hire another habal-habal driver to take you to Tumalog Falls for 50 PHP (~1 USD). We got there at around  12 noon and decided to walk under the blazing hot sun. After a few minutes of walking, there was instant regret.

For convenience, it is best to hire a habal-habal driver to Tumalog Falls. You’ll get there in less than 10 minutes.

Along the way, some parts of the road are steep. But, in my opinion, you can trust the driver to take you safely to your destination since they already know the way around.

After the downhill walk, you can hear the plunging water before seeing the actual waterfall. This alone excites me, not only because it was not an easy feat to walk downhill under the scorching sun, but it also means that the goal is near.

After paying the 50 PHP (~1 USD) entrance fee at the gate, an archway signage with Tumalog Falls welcomes guests. If a guest would like to stay longer, one can rent a small bamboo hut for 350 PHP (~6.5 USD).

If you want to relieve yourself, there are lavatories available for male and female guests. In addition, there is a sari-sari store or a small shop that sells snacks and drinks.

Trekking to Tumalog Falls is easy. You just need to follow the dirt trail and observe signposts. You know you’re near the waterfall when you see a huge and wide cascading water into a plunge pool surrounded by towering trees and bamboo. Birds chirping can also be heard.

Tumalog Falls in Oslob Cebu6

If you come closer, you can feel the mists as the water comes in contact with the mossy bedrock. The plunge pool is quite inviting with turquoise-colored water and has a shallow portion that even children with adult supervision can enjoy a cold swim. It was a truly breathtaking sight to see.

Tumalog Falls in Oslob Cebu8

If you want to capture the picturesque view, you can hire a human drone or simply enjoy taking photos by yourself.

OSLOB AND MOALBOAL – THE TRAVEL GUIDE

Getting out of the Airport ✈️

Using the app Rome2Rio we were able to see that from Cebu airport we needed to get to the bus station (South bus terminal ) and catch a Ceres bus for only for only 140 pesos [£2]. This is a for a 4 hour journey.

When you get out of the airport there will be lots of taxi drivers trying to take you the whole way to Oslob for around 3000 pesos.

White taxi’s are cheaper and you should always ask for meter as this will save you lots of money. On the way to the bus station our driver agreed to take us to Oslob for 1800 Pesos as we weren’t aware we had arrived on a Holy Day. The traffic was horrendous and the bus would have taken 6 hours so we agreed.

Things to do

Whale sharks 🐋 .

Oslob is home to the famous Whale Shark experience. Here are some popular Whale Sharks FAQ

Time to get there? ⌚  – As early as you can to beat the crowds. We left our hotel at 5:30am and was in the water with the Sharks by 6:15.

How long does it take?⌛  – The whole trip takes roughly an hour depending on crowds but you get 30 minutes in the water.

Is there a safe place for belongings?🔒  – There is nowhere to leave bags or valuables so if you are doing this without a driver to look after your things, only take your camera and a towel.

How much is it to swim with the whales? 💸  1000 pesos per person and our travel to and from the Sharks cost us 300 pesos.

What do I bring? 📷  – Take your GoPro as it is a huge one ticked off both of our bucket lists!

What shall I wear?👙  – We recommend swimming suits with something over the top. Thats all you need as you will have to wear a life jacket.

This is a hugely controversial subject. Many people do not agree with the fishermen feeding them for a tourist attraction and beleive it is changing the feeding habits of the Sharks. Others believe it is keeping this once endangered species alive. Make of it what you will but I would suggest going with an open mind. Both times I have swam with these giants I arrived in Oslob not convinced if I would take part. This time (2018) swimming with the whale sharks was totally different. The locals have a much better structured interaction and seem to be handling the influx of tourists well. I did no witness any sharks being touched or bashing into the boats which I did witness in 2017.

Whale Shark Swimming - Oslob and Moalboal

Tumalog Falls and Aguinid Falls

The furthest of the two being a 40 minute drive away from Oslob town.

How much is the entrance fee?💸 They both have a 40-60 peso per person fee to enter and the whole journey cost us 500 Peso each.

What time should we get to these waterfalls ? ⌚ Both waterfalls can get very busy so I advise to go early again to beat the crowds.

Can I swim there?🏊🏽  – Tumalog is a pretty huge and you are able to swim. Aguinid falls is less swimmable. To get there, you trek up the waterfall with a guide. I wore wet shoes which saved my life as flipflops slide off the vertical walls you will walk up and I took my wet bag with me too.

The guide is free but they expect a tip.

Map of Cebu - How to get from Oslob to Moalboal

Pronounced Mo-ahl-bo-ahl

The main town of Moalboal is 90km from Cebu city, on the west side of the island. The part everyone goes to and talks about is actually called Panagsana Beach . In resent years Panagsana Beach has become internationally renowned for the incredible S ardine run just meters offshore 🐟 This tiny town is the most touristy part of the island we have come across. There are lots of bars and restaurants and is a great place to meet people.

🏧 In Moalboal its self there is an ATM but in Panagsana Beach there is only 1 ATM which doesn’t always work.🏧

Accommodation in Moalboal 🏠

We stayed at a lovely lodge called Divers Lodge which was 1500 peso a night for a luxury room..by luxury we mean a working shower and fan but the owner did hook us up with a great moped to rent for the whole time we were there.

Panagsana beach - Oslob and Moalboal, Philippines

Panagsana beach 🐢

This is a very small beach. You can hire a snorkel and flippers from a nearby shop and swim out to see millions of sardines. This beach is also home to hundreds of turtles 🐢 which are only meters off shore. No trip needed, swim out and see the turtles eating along the reef. The best spot to see these turtles are to the  left side of the beach. We spotted 5 turtles within an hour.

White Beach 🌞

If you are after a better beach, White Beach is about a 15 minute moped ride away which is mostly locals but it is a nice beach and not busy during the week. There are two goverment tolls on the way which I think were 5 pesos each. Famously beautiful beach.

White Beach, Moalboal

Kawasan Falls

Kawasan Falls - Oslob and Moalboal

I have done the canyoneering here before and it is really fun and exciting but it is hard! It takes a moderate level of fitness and swimming and it does take 3 hours to finish.

TRAVEL TIP ↠ Save your GoPro battery for the end of the canyoneering as it is the most beautiful part.

If you don’t want to do the trekking, you can head straight to the bottom where it is 50 peso to park your moped and 75 peso to enter and you can swim around the bottom famously pictured waterfall. It does get very busy so go early as possible and head up to the left of the waterfall just above it to get some different shots to everyone else.
