The Palau Rock Islands have earned UNESCO status for their incredible scenery, and they’re one of the main tourist sights in the country of Palau. While many people choose to see the islands with a scenic flight , another great option is to visit them with a boat tour.

On a speed boat tour to the Rock Islands of Palau, you can do lots of fun activities like swimming in a bright turquoise lagoon nicknamed the Milky Way, walking on a soft white sandbar called Long Beach, and even snorkeling in a lake full of stingless jellyfish!

This travel guide will explain everything you need to know about visiting the Palau Rock Islands by boat, including the best tour company, current tour prices, a map of the islands, and the best things to see and do in the islands on a day trip from the town of Koror.

Best Rock Islands Palau Tour

Viator has a high-rated Palau boat tour that visits many of the top sights of the Rock Islands in a day tour.

This tour includes lunch, snorkel equipment, and free hotel pickup and drop-off from Koror, plus 5 to 8 hours of sightseeing and swimming at places like the Milky Way and Jellyfish Lake.

Keep in mind the itinerary can change from day to day because of the tide and other conditions, so if there’s a spot you’re really wanting to see, then you might want to double check about that with your tour company before you go.

We’ve used Viator for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they’re great. Highly recommended!

Where Are The Rock Islands Located?

The Rock Islands are located about 10 kilometers (6 miles) southwest of mainland Koror, Palau, so they’re easy to reach by boat.

With a speedboat, you can get to sights like the Milky Way in less than 30 minutes, and the other sights like Long Beach are only a bit farther.

Best Things To Do In The Rock Islands Of Palau

Here’s a list of some of the best sights and things to do in the Rock Islands of Palau.

This is far from a complete list of everything to do in the islands, but these are just some of the main highlights that you’re likely to experience on a one day boat tour.

• Milky Way

The Milky Way is a natural lagoon in the Rock Islands with some of the brightest turquoise water you’ll ever see.

This spot is popular for its mudbath activity, where you can cover your face and body with the white limestone mud, and it supposedly has health benefits for your skin. The tours provide the mudpack, and it’s a fun activity for all ages.

We spent about 30 minutes at the Milky Way, floating in the creamy colored water. It’s a really nice lagoon.

• Jellyfish Lake

The Jellyfish Lake is one of Palau’s most famous sights. Here, you can swim with millions of stingless jellyfish!

There are two different species of jellyfish living in this lake — the golden jellyfish and the moon jellyfish — and both are completely harmless to humans. They have no ability to sting.

You can easily snorkel with the jellyfish near the surface of the lake, and Palau is one of only a few places in the world where you can do this!

Before visiting the Jellyfish Lake, make sure to check with your tour company about the current status of the lake and whether it’s open or not.

Unfortunately when I visited Palau in 2023, the jellyfish numbers had dwindled because of El Niño and La Niña weather patterns , which caused most of the golden jellyfish to die out since the lake temperature was too warm.

Thankfully the jellyfish numbers are eventually expected to rebound and go back to their normal levels, and hopefully that happens before too long!

• Long Beach

Long Beach is a natural sandbar in the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon that can only be seen at low tide. This was one of my favorite spots in the Rock Islands, and I would’ve liked to stay there all day.

We hopped off the boat in the shallow water and then walked all the way to the end of the sandbar and back, spending about 30 minutes enjoying the scenery at Long Beach. When it’s fully exposed, the sandbar is almost 1 kilometer long (1/2 mile).

I’ve seen a lot of nice sandbars around the world in places like Indonesia and the Philippines , but I have to say this is one of the best sandbars I’ve seen. The water is really calm and beautiful, and the sand is almost blindingly white.

• German Channel

The German Channel is an artificial waterway that was created by the Germans during World War II to allow ships to pass through the reef. The channel is now used as a scuba diving site, since it has a depth of up to 40 meters (130 feet).

While I think it’s more interesting to see the channel from above on a scenic plane ride , many of the boat tours visit this spot briefly as well.

The water is incredibly blue, and if you’re lucky you might even see sharks or manta rays swimming through the channel!

• Babelomekang Island

After spending a few hours exploring the Rock Islands, tours will normally stop somewhere to eat lunch.

Some tours stop for lunch at Carp Island Resort, but in our case, we went ashore at a nice little paradise island called Babelomekang, and the tour guide handed each of us a Bento box (Japanese set meal) with rice, chicken, spring roll, orange, veggies, and more.

This was a quiet island with a nice white sand beach, shady trees, and plenty of room to walk around. We spent about 1 hour here eating our lunch and then relaxing on the beach.

• Snorkeling Spots

Last, but not least, we spent 1 or 2 hours snorkeling at some places around the reef, including a very nice spot called the Cemetery.

Palau has lots of great snorkeling opportunities spread out across the Rock Islands, so there’s plenty of variety in the places you might visit with your tour.

I didn’t take pictures while snorkeling since I didn’t have my underwater camera with me at the time, but there were sea turtles, and lots of nice fish and coral in surprisingly good condition!

Map Of The Palau Rock Islands

Here’s a map of some of the best attractions and things to do in the Rock Islands of Palau, including top sights like the Milky Way, Jellyfish Lake, and Long Beach. You can click on the icons to see the name and more information about each spot.

Keep in mind each tour follows a different itinerary, so you may not always be able to see every one of these places in a single day trip.

Rock Island Conservation Fees

Palau requires a conservation permit for any tourist visiting the Rock Islands by boat. This is paid separately from the cost of your tour, although most tour companies can sell you the permit on the day of your tour.

As of 2024, the permit costs are as follows:

  • Rock Islands — $50 USD
  • Rock Islands + Jellyfish Lake — $100 USD

You only need to buy one of these permits, not both. In other words, if you plan on visiting the Jellyfish Lake, then you have to buy the more expensive permit. If not, then you can buy the cheaper permit. Kids under 6 years of age don’t need any permit.

The permits are valid for 10 days, so if you decide to re-visit the Rock Islands during that timeframe you don’t have to buy another permit. Just don’t lose your permit!

The Rock Islands are a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012

Can You Fly A Drone In The Palau Rock Islands?

Yes, you can fly a drone in the Rock Islands of Palau, but a permit is required. You can apply for a drone permit by filling out this form on the official website of the Palau Visitors Authority.

It’s free and easy to fill out the application. Just enter your name, nationality, and other personal details, and the date and purpose of your drone flight. If you’re flying for non-commercial reasons, just say it’s hobby photography.

You’ll want to look over the drone rules on that page as well. They only allow flights below 120 meters (400 feet) and within visual line of sight, and of course you can’t fly near planes or airports.

In my case, they approved the permit in only 1 hour, but they recommend applying at least 3 days in advance to make sure there’s enough time to process your permit.

If you’re approved, you’ll want to explain this to your Rock Island tour company as well, and save an offline copy of your permit to show them, that way there’s no misunderstanding on the day of your boat tour.

There are lots of nice spots to fly a drone in the Rock Islands, but I think Long Beach was my favorite. The sandbar looks great from above!

What To Bring For The Boat Tour

Here are some packing suggestions for your Rock Islands day trip.

  • Waterproof Bag: Essential for keeping your electronics safe on the boat tours. I brought a 30 liter bag and was able to fit my drone, tablet, camera, phone, and a bunch of other stuff inside, and everything was kept dry!
  • Waterproof Phone Pouch: Same as above, but these are for your phone only. Great if you don’t have other electronics and just need something small to protect your phone.
  • Snorkeling Gear: Some of the snorkeling spots have nice corals and fish, and you won’t want to miss out on them. Snorkels and masks are often provided for free by the tour companies, but if not, then you’ll want to bring your own gear.
  • Sun Protection: The sun is very strong in Palau, so you’ll want to wear a hat and sunscreen. If you bring sunscreen from home, just keep in mind some types of sunscreen are banned in Palau and may be confiscated at the airport in Koror.
  • Bottled Water: Check if your tour company provides bottled water. If not, you’ll want to bring some of your own, because the snorkeling will make you thirsty, guaranteed.
  • Drone: An aerial camera can be very handy for capturing nice pictures of the Rock Islands, but remember to get a permit and follow the rules, as mentioned in the section above.

Other Tips For The Palau Rock Islands

  • Language. Many tour companies in Palau are Japanese-owned and they cater primarily to Japanese tourists, so keep in mind there may be a bit of a language barrier, although it’s generally not much of a problem. In my case, the guide was bilingual and helpfully repeated everything in English for me as we went, so it was no issue at all.
  • Crocodiles. According to the locals, it’s very rare to see a saltwater crocodile in Palau, especially if you stay away from mangrove areas.
  • Mosquitoes. I never saw any mosquitoes on this tour, even when we stopped to have our lunch on Babelomekang island. It’s a forested island so I thought there might be some mosquitoes, but there wasn’t a single one! I wouldn’t bother wearing mosquito repellant for this tour at all.
  • Toilets. When island hopping in Palau, generally there are no bathrooms on the boats or islands. You can find basic toilets at Babelomekang island or Carp Island Resort, but aside from that, your best bet is to take care of business before starting your day tour.
  • Where To Stay. The only private island with a hotel in this area is the Carp Island Resort , which is located between Peleliu and the Rock Islands. This hotel is technically outside of the Rock Islands, but it could still be a good option if you want to stay in close proximity to the dive sites.

Best Time To Visit The Rock Islands

Palau has plenty of rain all year long, but any time is good to visit. The driest months in Koror and the Rock Islands are January to April, but even those months have plenty of rain.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much either way, because the rain tends to come in the evening or at night. You can never guarantee you’ll have perfect weather no matter when you go.

I visited Palau in September, which is supposed to be one of the more rainy months of the year, but actually the weather was perfect and there was no rain at all for several days, so it didn’t affect my travels one bit.

Fun Facts About The Rock Islands Of Palau

  • Why are they called the Rock Islands? The Rock Islands may not look like rocks, but they actually are in fact limestone rock formations covered with tropical vegetation.
  • How many islands are there? According to UNESCO , there are approximately 445 uninhabited islands in the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon, and they cover a total area of 100,200 hectares (about 250,000 acres).
  • What is the UNESCO status? The Rock Islands Southern Lagoon has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012, because of its exceptional beauty, natural biodiversity, and cultural value.
  • What kinds of animals live there? The Rock Islands are home to birds, fruit bats, dugongs, sea turtles, saltwater crocodiles, and many kinds of coral, fish, and giant clams.

Paradise in Palau!

Palau Scenic Flight Over The Rock Islands

A scenic flight over the Rock Islands is becoming one of the most popular things for tourists to do in Palau, and it’s easy to see why: this is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Pacific!

The flights are offered by Pacific Mission Aviation, and they take the doors off so you can get an overhead view of the town of Koror, followed by amazing views of hundreds of Palau’s nicest islands, lakes, and lagoons.

As much as I enjoyed touring the Rock Islands by boat, it was hard to top the scenic flight. If you have the time and budget, you should try to do both activities. The boat tour and scenic flight are very different experiences, but they’re both awesome!

Palau Travel Guide – Everything You Need to Know

palau local tour

Palau, a pristine paradise in the western Pacific Ocean, beckons travelers with its mesmerizing natural beauty and vibrant marine life. Comprising over 300 islands, this Micronesian nation is renowned for its turquoise waters, lush jungles, and remarkable underwater wonders. Palau offers an idyllic escape for those seeking adventure, relaxation, and a close encounter with the wonders of the ocean.

What’s the Best Time to Visit? 📅

The best time to visit Palau as a tourist is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April . This period offers pleasant weather and ideal conditions for outdoor activities, especially underwater exploration. Here’s what to consider during the different seasons:

  • Dry Season (November to April): This is the high tourist season in Palau. During this time, you can expect warm temperatures, calm seas, and excellent visibility for snorkeling and diving. However, it’s also the peak of the wet season in some parts, so occasional rain showers are possible. Be sure to book accommodations and activities in advance, as it can get busy.
  • Wet Season (May to October): This season brings higher humidity and more rain, especially from July to October. While rain can be a drawback, it’s also the best time for surfers, and it’s less crowded. The lush green landscapes are in full bloom, and the rainforests come to life during this period.
  • Intermediate Seasons (May, June, October): These months serve as a transition between the dry and wet seasons. You can enjoy good weather and fewer crowds, making it a good time to visit if you want to avoid the high season.

Keep in mind that Palau’s tropical climate can be unpredictable, and occasional rain showers can occur even during the dry season. Palau’s attractions are open year-round, but your choice of when to visit should depend on your interests. If you’re primarily interested in water-based activities like diving and snorkeling, the dry season is your best bet. However, if you prefer a more budget-friendly and less crowded experience, consider visiting during the wet season, especially during the transitional months.

What’s the Best Way to Get Around? 🚌

Getting around Palau as a tourist is relatively straightforward, and there are several modes of transportation to choose from:

  • Rental Cars: Renting a car is one of the most convenient ways to explore Palau, particularly if you plan to visit multiple islands or explore more remote areas. Most car rental agencies are located on Koror Island. Be aware that you will need a Palauan driver’s permit, which can be obtained at the rental agency or through your hotel.
  • Taxis: Taxis are available in Koror and are a convenient option for short trips or transfers between your hotel and the airport. Taxis are metered, and you should confirm the fare with the driver before starting your journey.
  • Bicycles: Some tourists choose to explore Koror Island by bicycle. Biking is an eco-friendly and leisurely way to see the sights at your own pace.
  • Boat and Ferries: To travel between islands in Palau, you can use local boats and ferries. They provide access to more remote areas and offer a scenic way to explore the archipelago. Speedboats are available for private tours or island hopping.
  • Public Transportation: Palau has a limited public bus system, primarily on Koror Island. This is a more affordable option for getting around within the main island.
  • Guided Tours: Many tour operators offer guided tours to popular destinations and activities. These tours can be a convenient way to explore Palau’s natural wonders, including marine excursions, kayaking, and jungle hikes.
  • Walking: In downtown Koror, you can easily explore on foot. Many of the main attractions, shops, restaurants, and hotels are within walking distance of each other.
  • Air Travel: If you plan to visit more remote islands in Palau, you can take domestic flights from Roman Tmetuchl International Airport on Babeldaob (Koror) to various destinations in the country.

It’s important to plan your transportation based on your itinerary. If you intend to explore beyond Koror Island, consider a combination of rental cars, boat transfers, and domestic flights. Additionally, ensure you check the availability of transportation services and tours, especially if you plan to visit more remote locations in Palau.

When choosing where to stay in Palau, consider your budget, the activities you plan to engage in, and the locations you want to explore. Culture and Safety 🦺

  • Respect for Local Customs: Palauans are known for their warm and welcoming hospitality. Show respect for local customs and traditions, such as removing your shoes before entering someone’s home.
  • Conservative Dress: While beachwear is acceptable at resorts and beaches, when visiting local villages or cultural sites, it’s important to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, out of respect for local norms.
  • Greetings: Palauans place importance on polite greetings. Use “Alii” as a friendly greeting, and a simple “Kedmesiich” means “thank you.”
  • Etiquette: Be polite and maintain a calm demeanor in all interactions. Shouting and aggressive behavior are generally frowned upon.
  • Tipping: Tipping is not customary in Palau, as a service charge is often included in bills at hotels and restaurants. However, leaving a small tip for exceptional service is appreciated.
  • Water Safety: Palau is a haven for water activities, but be cautious when swimming or snorkeling, as strong currents and tides can be unpredictable. Always follow safety guidelines provided by tour operators.
  • Marine Life: While snorkeling or diving, be aware of potential marine hazards such as sea urchins, fire coral, and lionfish. Avoid touching or disturbing marine life to protect both the ecosystem and your safety.
  • Sun Protection: Protect yourself from the strong Pacific sun by using sunscreen, wearing hats, and staying hydrated.
  • Insect Repellent: Palau has tropical conditions, so use insect repellent to guard against mosquitoes and other insects, especially in jungle areas.
  • Health Precautions: Be sure to have any necessary vaccinations and medications, including those for mosquito-borne diseases like dengue fever.
  • Food and Water: While the water in Palau is generally safe to drink, you might prefer bottled water, especially in more remote areas. Ensure that seafood is cooked thoroughly to avoid foodborne illnesses.
  • Transportation: If renting a car, be aware that the roads in Palau can be narrow and winding. Drive cautiously, follow speed limits, and use seat belts.
  • Emergency Services: Familiarize yourself with the local emergency numbers for police (110) and medical assistance (911).
  • Coral Reefs: Coral reefs are delicate ecosystems. Avoid touching or standing on them, and do not collect marine souvenirs, as this can harm the environment and is illegal in Palau.
  • Environmental Protection: Palau places great emphasis on environmental conservation. Respect and follow the local regulations, such as not littering, to help preserve its natural beauty.
  • Local Culture: Be respectful of Palauan culture and customs, and ask for permission before taking photos of individuals or in culturally sensitive areas.

Palau is generally a safe destination for tourists, and the local culture is welcoming and friendly. By following safety guidelines and showing respect for local customs, you can have a safe and culturally enriching experience in this beautiful island nation.

The country consists of one main island, Babeldaob, several smaller islands, and about 300+ limestone rock islands (more about these later).

The capital city of Koror is located on the main island, and around 75% of the entire population of Palau lives here.

Table of Contents

Where is the Island of Palau Located?

Palau is located in the Western Pacific Ocean. Around 800km east of the Philippines and 1330 km northeast of Guam. Essentially, Palau island is situated in the middle of nowhere.

Because of its remote location, it’s a pricey destination to reach, and the high prices continue once you’re here.

Palau is also one of the smallest countries in the world, along with  Tuvalu , Nauru , and Vatican City.

What Airlines Fly to Palau?

Palau has only recently opened up again for tourism in 2022 (after remaining closed for tourism due to the coronavirus) and there are now limited flights available. You can book these flights on Skyscanner .

The only three current flights are listed below:

  • From  Manila  on United Airlines
  • From  Guam  on United Airlines
  • From Taipei on China Airlines

What is Palau known for?

Palau is known as a world-class scuba diving destination; some say it has the best marine ecosystem in the world, alongside  the Maldives   and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia (I recommend joining the incredible  Reefsleep experience  in the Whitsundays to confirm this for yourself).

For this reason, tourism in Palau is heavily focused on diving and snorkelling activities and other awesome things to do in Palau.

The Rock Island Tour is #1 on our awesome things to do in Palau. Don’t miss it!

2) The Ngardmau Waterfall

A Palauan legend states that the Ngardmau waterfall was created by the body of a spirit, a giant eel with one eye that was believed to be a God. One day the spirit fell into a deep slumber. He never woke up again and his body evolved into the river. It’s believed that his head became the Ngardmau Waterfall.

You will need wheels to get to Ngardmau waterfall and I recommend hiring a car from IR Car Rentals in downtown Koror. They rent cars starting from $32 per day.

The drive to the waterfall from downtown Koror takes about 30min. As you follow the trail, discover small pools and tiny waterfalls along the way.  The waterfall is the largest one in Palau, around 30m high and 37m wide.

Note:  It’s a steep 35 min downhill trek from the entrance to the waterfall.

Entrance Fee:  USD 20 pp and you can purchase the ticket in the parking lot. The waterfall is open daily between 9 am – 5 pm.

3) Go Sea Kayaking

kayaking things to do in palau

One of the best things to do in Palau is a kayaking tour. I’d recommend  Sam’s Tours  for this activity as they offer 4 different kayak tours (view tours on Sam’s Tours website ). This gives you the chance to explore a variety of different habitats within Palau’s stunning Rock Islands.

Learn the history of the archipelago from your local guide as you paddle around paradise.

4) Stand Up Paddle Boarding in Palau

The water and beaches in Palau are made for exploring. I’d recommend hiring a stand-up paddleboard and heading out there.

You can hire a stand-up paddleboard rental at one of the rental shops, but remember that permits are not included in the price.

5) Belau National Museum

Bai Belau National museum things to do in Palau

Visit the museum to learn more about Paluan culture. Explore the impressive Bai or traditional Palauan meeting house located outside the museum.

6) Go Scuba Diving

Scuba diving is what most tourists in Palau are here to do. The underwater world is incredible here. In saying that, scuba diving is expensive in Palau – so be prepared for that.

scuba diving things to do in palau

I’d recommend contacting one of these reputable Dive Operators before arriving in Palau to arrange all your diving trips in advance.

The dive operators require a minimum number of people to operate tours, and tourism is a little slow on the island since re-opening in 2022.

Recommended Diving Operators in Palau

  • Sam’s Tours  – Our Top Choice! These guys have awesome tours, great staff, and competitive prices.
  • Neco Marine – Another top choice!
  • Fish N Fins Palau
  • Palau Dive Adventures  – These guys customise dive tours.

7) A Three-Day Dive Tour (includes Jellyfish Lake Tour)

8) Scenic Flight over the islands

Enjoy a breathtaking 40-minute flight over the Rock Islands of Palau. This is one of the best things to do in Palau, especially if you’re short on time. The flight price is $180 pp and requires a min of 2 people per flight.

9) Visit the Stone Monoliths

Located at the northern end of Babeldaob you will encounter a succession of over 35 stone monoliths. According to the local faith, they were regarded as a sacred area for prayers and rituals, dating back over 2000 years ago.

What is a monolith?

A monolith is described as a statue, or column carved from a single piece of stone. Some examples of monoliths around the world are the massive statues of men on Easter Island, Chile, Stonehenge or Uluru (Ayers Rock) in Australia .

These stone monoliths in Palau are a great deal smaller than the ones mentioned above, but still one of the more interesting things to do in Palau.

Opening Hours : 9 am – 5 pm

Entrance Fee:  $5 pp

10) Off-Road Jungle Driving Adventure

Go deep into the Palau rainforest on an exhilarating ATV tour. Driving a rugged vehicle built for rough terrain, you’ll explore deep into the landscape that traditional tour vehicles can’t reach.

Following your local guide through a maze of muddy tracks, the trip includes swimming stops at jungle waterfalls, wildlife, and time to discover tropical plants on foot. Learn about Palau’s traditional culture, plant medicine, and lost villages. The tour is from 4-8 hours in duration and lunch is included.

A great way to see discover the natural beauty and history of the island and one of the things to do in Palau for adventure seekers!

I hope you’ve enjoyed our list of the best things to do in Palau. This is a stunning destination and the Palauan people are very welcoming too.

What the Trip is Like

  • 4-5 hours kayaking
  • 1-3 hours snorkeling
  • Occasional short hikes

Ocean Conditions

Most of our kayaking and sailing is in calm, protected waters. We have a few short crossings (both in the boat and on kayak) over the open ocean, and the sea can be rough if it is windy or stormy.

In general, we choose routes that are largely protected from high winds and strong currents, and we run the trips at the times of year when the weather is most reliable. We also adapt our daily schedule to local conditions.

As one of the primary activities on this trip is snorkeling, we strongly recommend bringing your own snorkeling equipment to ensure a proper fit. You can rent equipment (mask, snorkel, fins, and wetsuit) in Palau if you prefer, though we cannot guarantee that your size will be available. The shallow water in the Rock Islands is generally warm, but a 2-3mm shorty wetsuit is recommended if you get cold easily, or at least a lycra skin for sun protection.

Lumsden, Saskatchewan

"This was definitely a ‘bucket list’ trip and it did not disappoint. The snorkeling, kayaking, and scenery were absolutely magnificent. The ability to experience different environments—marine lakes, patch reefs, secluded bays, and the outer reef—without a crush of other tourists at popular spots like Jellyfish Lake, made this a truly memorable trip. The land excursions to WWII sites, ancient villages, and a Yapese stone money added an important human dimension to the trip."

"The camping locations were far beyond expectations, and sunrises and sunsets beyond imagination. The balance between kayaking, snorkeling, hiking, and WW II history was perfect."

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Palau Pacific Resort and Sam’s Tours

Palau, micronesia.

Palau Pacific Resort is located on a pristine white sand private beach on the island of Koror, the Republic of Palau. It is the ultimate tropical gateway in Micronesia, nestled in 64 acres of lush tropical gardens with the Pacific Ocean caressing its pristine white sand beach. This luxury resort in Palau features 160 unique villa-style guestrooms including the amenities of a world-class resort. The resort was built respecting the surrounding natural Palau environment, building no higher than the tallest coconut tree.

The Palau Pacific Resort is one of the primary supporters of conservation to protect Palau’s biodiversity for future generations. The resort contributes annually to various organizations and continues to promote eco-tourism activities.

The resort is just a 30-minute drive from the Palau International Airport. Transportation to and from the airport may be arranged for guests by NECO Shuttle bus service ($22.00 each way), private taxi, or car rental. Transportation from the hotel to restaurants and shops downtown may be arranged at the Guest Service counter either by BBI shuttle bus service (starting at $8.00 for a one-week pass) available in the evening or any time of the day by taxi (starting at $8.00 one way to downtown).

MARINE LIFE RESERVE BY KOROR STATE LAW:

Palau Pacific Resort Marine Sanctuary was established on December 2, 2002. The fringing reef sanctuary has a high biodiversity with over 566 species of marine life including algae, sea grass, coral, fish, and macroinvertebrates. This sanctuary is home to several endangered species: the famous giant clam, the humphead parrotfish, the humphead wrasse, and the hawksbill turtle.

PROTECTING WATER RESOURCES:

Palau has had dry seasons leading to water shortage and conservation. To ensure an adequate and safe water supply, the resort maintains its own source of water from rainwater and a deep well. Water drawn from these sources is filtered, chlorinated, and stored in tanks that distribute the water to the entire resort.

TRANSPLANTING BABY GIANT CLAMS:

Palau has 7 species of clams out of 9 species in the world. Guests can participate in the Baby Clam Planting at Palau Pacific Resort’s marine sanctuary during Earth Day or on special occasions. This is their effort to conserve clam species as well as snorkeling attractions for their guests.

SOLAR POWER GENERATION:

Most living things on earth such as people, plants, and animals enjoy the benefit of the sun. A solar module panel was installed in 2011 to generate solar energy. This effort was to help minimize global warming as well as cost savings on electricity and maintenance. The solar panels provide electricity for the lobby area of Palau Pacific Resort.

WASTE PLASTIC OILING SYSTEM

Palau Pacific Resort has invested in an environmentally friendly machine that converts discarded plastic back into oil which is a blend of gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and some heavy oils. The oils are being used for tiki torches and small equipment. It can be processed further and could go straight into a diesel car.

COMPOSTING RAW GARBAGE:

Every day, raw food is picked up at the Koror State’s compost recycling center where the raw food is processed into pure soil. The soil is used for gardening throughout Palau Pacific Resort.

DUGONG AWARENESS CAMPAIGN:

Palau Pacific Resort is one of the major sponsors of the “I Love Mesekiu” Dugong Awareness campaign. The campaign published various awareness and educational materials to help stop the killing of these endangered species.

GUIDED NATURE WALK:

Explore the Nature Trail whether on a guided tour or on your own. There are a variety of plants and bird sightings along the trail. Plants are important for food, shelter, medicine, arts, and customary practices.

Arrival in Koror

Upon arrival of your flight to Koror, you are met by a Carolines Resort representative and transferred to your hotel. As most flights arrive late in the evening, we meet as a group on the morning of Day 2.

Accommodations

Carolines Resort

Carolines Resort Ngerkebesang, Palau

The Carolines Resort is an icon of peace and tranquility set on the hilltop locally known as Ketund. It’s eight bungalows are built almost entirely of local mahogany, mangrove, and bamboo. Amenities include A/C, Wifi, and private balconies with some of the best views in Palau of the Rock Islands across the bay.

Welcome Orientation

  • Activity Overview: Walking
  • Activity Level: Easy

After breakfast, our guide meets us in the lobby of the hotel for an orientation of the week's activities. Our introduction to Palau begins with a visit to the Belau National Museum in Koror. Here, we gain some insight into Palauan culture and customs by viewing displays and artifacts that share the story of Palau's history both before and after contact with foreign peoples.

On the museum grounds sits a replica bai, or men's meeting house. Each village in Palau had a men's meeting house which were elaborately painted and decorated with carvings of traditional stories and legends.

After enjoying lunch, we have the special opportunity to take a ride in a traditional Palauan canoe. This outrigger canoe is hand-carved and constructed in the same style as the canoes used by Palauans in centuries past to fish and explore the warm turquoise waters surrounding the Rock Islands.

Paddling Nikko Bay

  • Activity Overview: Sea kayaking and snorkeling
  • Activity Level: Easy to moderate

After breakfast, we gather together for a kayaking instructional and safety briefing before heading out into the Rock Islands. Our first stop within Nikko Bay is at Disney Lake, which we enter by maneuvering our kayaks through a small marine tunnel exposed at low tide. In this hidden lake, we discover multi-thousand year-old reefs, protected from surrounding limestone walls that prevents wind and waves from disturbing the delicate marine environment.

After lunch, we paddle to Lettuce Coral Wall, a nursery of sorts for small reef fish who will eventually make their way to Palau's outer reefs. The remainder of the afternoon is spent exploring marine caves filled with hanging stalactites, botanical treasures, and an occasional sheath-tailed bat. These caves are some of Palau's greatest geological wonders with names like Cathedral Cave, Rolling Rock Arch, and Skylight Cave.

Jellyfish Lake

  • Activity Overview: Snorkeling

Our adventure today is no doubt among the highlights of the trip—the thousands of non-stinging jellyfish at Jellyfish Lake. Their existence in Jellyfish Lake is a fascinating evolutionary story tracing back 35 million years to the time when the Rock Islands were first created. A combination of colliding tectonic plates and the erosive forces of the ocean created these salt water lakes, where over time, the isolated jellyfish eventually evolved into the stingless variety we see today. We float gently in the water of the lake, surrounded by jellyfish, equipped with just our masks and snorkels. It is a truly special experience; one you will only find in Palau! Other highlights of the day include snorkeling in Cycad Lake and visiting Giant Clam Beach — a place whose name will be obvious when you see its inhabitants.

Carp Island Bungalows

Carp Island Bungalows Carp Island, Palau

Located on the secluded Carp Island, enjoy pure tropical tranquility at its best with a prime location close to some of the best snorkeling sites in Palau. The rustic Carp Island Bungalows provides a comfortable stay only steps away from the beach on what feels like your own private island.

Outer Reef, Ngemelis Island, and Peleliu Island WWII Land Tour

  • Activity Overview: Snorkeling & walking

Today, we snorkel along the Outer Reef. Big Blue Drop Off is a sheer vertical wall that runs along the whole length of Ngemelis Island, providing some of the most impressive snorkeling in the world.

Palau's most popular dive site, Blue Corner, is recognized worldwide for its high concentration of marine life. It is one of the most highly-rated dive sites in Micronesia, in part due to an upwelling created by the currents which attracts schools of fish to the top edges of the walls. Napoleon wrasses, dogtooth tuna, eagle rays, manta rays, white tip reef sharks, turtles, schooling barracudas, and groups of other reef fish populate the area.

In addition to today's snorkeling, we also tour Peleliu Island to learn of its role in WWII. The remains of old bunkers, tanks, and guns litter the island and are haunting reminders of its past military significance. It is difficult to imagine this tropical paradise was once the site of the bloody Battle of Peleliu where US and Japanese forces fought for three months.

Turtle Cove

With immense biodiversity and beauty, Palau provides unrivalled snorkeling opportunities, and the reefs surrounding Peleliu Island are some of Palau's finest. Peleliu is well-known for it's fringing reefs, coral reefs which develop adjacent to islands with little or no separation from the shore. From the surface, multitudes of colorful reef fish can be observed gliding among dense coral formations sprinkled with giant clams, sea squirts, and varieties of anemone. The outer barrier reefs near Peleliu are also exceptional for viewing a multitude of marine life. Turtle Cove is a particularly stunning reef system, which includes a beautiful blue hole, vertical drop-offs, and a current swept corner teeming with shy reef sharks, sea turtles, stingrays, and schooling fish. Sightings of classic tropical reef fish, including clown triggerfish and palette surgeonfish, are common at this world class snorkeling and diving site.

West Ngeruktabel

West Ngeruktabel's inner lagoon environment offers many amazing snorkel sites, with endless varieties of bright, vibrant coral consisting of old growth hard corals and precious soft coral. These reefs are home to an abundance of fish and other marine creatures that thrive in this unique and exotic underwater ecosystem. We keep our eyes peeled for the well-camouflaged sea horses living in the shallow waters of Sea Horse Cove. But in Palau's Rock Islands, the fascinating aquatic creatures are not the only things waiting for you beneath the waves. West Ngeruktabel is also the final resting place for several sunken tanks, planes, and artillery from WWII, a chilling reminder of how this celebrated and pristine snorkeling destination was once a battleground. This wreckage has developed its own thriving ecosystems brimming with fish, corals, and other invertebrates not commonly seen along the outer reef.

Palau Pacific Resort

Palau Pacific Resort Koror, Palau

Palau Pacific Resort is nestled among 64 acres of lush gardens with exotic tropical flowers. Surrounded by the blue water of the western Pacific, this luxury hotel features a private 1,000-foot blanket of white sand beach with excellent snorkeling and a freshwater outdoor beachside swimming pool. Palau Pacific Resort rooms are all thoughtfully appointed with a range of modern amenities for a relaxing stay.

  • Activity Overview: Sea kayaking & snorkeling

With six isolated turquoise bays and two marine lakes, Risong Bay is a paddler's paradise. After kayaking through a marine tunnel, we arrive at Black Tip Lake, where female black tip reef sharks give birth to their young. The young sharks frequently swim alongside boats in an endless quest for tiny fish. Just outside of Black Tip Lake sits a reef flat known as Blue Devil Gardens, home to black spotted puffers, threadfin butterflies, and cryptic honeycomb groupers.

Each of the hidden bays within Risong contains a unique and distinctive habitat. As tidal waters flow out of an enclosed marine lake, they spill into Mandarin Fish Bay as a saltwater waterfall. The waters have been filtered by their artesian passage through the limestone, and thus the bay becomes crystal clear—ideal for viewing the pajama cardinal fish, sail-fin tang, and the enigmatic and brilliantly colored mandarin fish, all which inhabit this bay.

Ulong Island

Our last full day in Palau is no less incredible than the previous ones. We depart for the island of Ulong. White sand beaches, swaying palm trees, and turquoise bays define this picturesque island. Ulong also hides some fascinating historic treasures including the site of an ancient village, hidden pictographs, stone terracing, and myriad artifacts from a lost culture of ancient Palauans.

At Ulong Arch, we enjoy a snorkel and search the coral for all four of Palau's colorful anemone fish. Next, we visit a historic site where Palauans had their first contact with the Western world. We enjoy lunch on the sandy shores of this protected cove before paddling on to the reef named Wilson's Channel. Colorful clams, spider conchs, and dancing damselfish grace this pristine coral garden.

We head to Ulong's most beautiful stretch of sand, where we learn of the Palauans' history and how their ancestors managed to cross vast distances to reach these remote shores. We walk through a thick tropical forest to a UNESCO World Heritage village site mysteriously abandoned over 500 years ago. Our return to Koror by boat provides us with breathtaking scenery as we cruise through a labyrinth of islands, bays, and arches on our return to Palau Pacific Resort where we have time to indulge in some of the luxuries of the resort and share a our last celebratory meal.

Return Flights Home

  • Activity Overview: Departure from Palau

You will either be transferred to the airport in time to check in for return flights home, or you may opt to continue traveling independently, or extend your stay in Koror.

Please note that this is a typical itinerary, and actual activities may vary due to weather conditions, local events, and to allow serendipity to play a hand in your experience. Accommodations are as outlined in the itinerary, although we reserve the right to change these or the order visited should the need arise.

What To Expect

Physical activity.

Boundless Journeys' trips are designed for energetic and flexible individuals who like to be active and have a spirit of adventure and a positive attitude. Palau: Snorkeling & Kayaking Odyssey is rated 2, easy to moderate, on a scale of 1-5 (with 5 being the most strenuous). No prior kayaking or snorkeling experience is necessary for this trip. Our guides will provide basic paddling and snorkeling instructions for anyone who needs it.

The sea kayaking and snorkeling, while not technically difficult, will have you active for good portions of each day. You can expect to kayak a minimum of twice during the tour, spending approximately 3 hours in the kayak, but not paddling that entire time. The kayaking is also split up with breaks for snorkeling and other activities. On a few of the days you will have the opportunity to do short walks to inland sites. These excursions will be relatively easy walks in the rainforest, but the paths may be slippery, rocky, rooted, and steep in small sections.

Meeting Point

Koror, Palau

Departure Point

Traveling to and from.

Most Convenient Airport: Koror International Airport, Palau (airport code: ROR)

Meeting Time and Place: Upon your arrival in Koror you will be met by a representative from Carolines Resort (our first hotel) and transferred to the hotel. Because of the late arrival of flights from the U.S., you will meet the group and your guide at 9:00 a.m. on the morning of Day 2 in the lobby of the Carolines Resort.

Departure Time and Place: Most flights out of Koror leave very early in the morning (at around 2:00 a.m.). If you are leaving on the final day of the tour, a departure airport transfer is provided for you. If you are spending some post-tour days in Palau and staying at Palau Pacific Resort, Boundless Journeys can assist in arranging your post-tour nights and departure airport transfer.

About the Sea Kayaking & Snorkeling

This trip is appropriate for both those with previous kayaking & snorkeling experience, or for those who are new to kayaking & snorkeling; no previous experience is required. Skills are quickly learned, and our expert guides provide instruction and tips throughout the trip.

It is hard to accurately rate the difficulty of the sea kayaking during this trip as much of the challenge is determined by the weather. We plan our kayaking routes and snorkeling schedule to avoid strong wind and to correspond with favorable tides. With the support of a speedboat, we have the option to motor through any difficult conditions and therefore ensure gentle and pleasant paddling. Still, it is important that you travel with a spirit of flexibility in regards to the weather and any challenges it may present.

The type of kayak used on tour is the open cockpit, sit-on-top style, making them stable vessels. We offer both single and double kayaks. All kayaks offer dry hatches, seat backs, and adjustable foot pedals. Life jackets are available upon request.

Palau enjoys a warm climate all year, with an average annual temperature of 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Given the tropical climate, it is very humid in Palau and rainfall can occur throughout the year, though sunshine is still prevalent. Palau is located outside the typhoon zone, so severe storms are generally not a concern.

You can obtain more detailed weather information on www.weatherbase.com.

Given Palau's consistent weather and temperature patterns, any time of year is good for visiting. Palau's water temperature averages 82-85 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. Boundless Journeys has chosen Palau tour dates to coincide with optimal tides for exploring the Rock Islands.

Palau has an assortment of restaurants. Many of the best restaurants in Palau are Asian, specializing in Japanese, Chinese, and Korean food. Palau'an food is typically comprised of seafood, chicken, and pork with tropical fruits and vegetables such as mango, papaya, watermelon, bananas, peppers, breadfruit, and taro. Sweet potato and tapioca are also important staples of the Palau'an diet.

Indiana Jones Tour

Kayaks loaded on to a boat for the Indiana Jones Tour in Palau

Are you ready for the adventure of a lifetime? If you're looking for a tour that combines culture, adventure, and culinary joy, then the Indiana Jones Tour in Palau is perfect for you!

Fish 'n Fins Palau offers the most exciting and breathtaking tour that you will ever experience. This tour takes you on an adventure through the Rock Islands and the beautiful waters surrounding Palau, where you will explore limestone caves, mangroves, and Yapese stone money quarries.

Starting early in the morning, you'll meet your guide at the Fish 'n Fins dive shop, where you'll have the chance to grab a quick breakfast and a nice Lavazza espresso at the Barracuda Restaurant. Then, you'll set sail to Airai, a Palauan state north of Koror, where you'll be greeted by the breathtaking scenery of Nikko Bay and the Rock Islands.

Your captain will lead you on an incredibly beautiful route before arriving at a small yellow hut, which marks the entrance to a Yapese Stone money quarry. There, you will be introduced to your tour guide for the day, who will take you on a journey through the rainforest.

Group of people standing around a stone money in Palau

As you walk through the rainforest, you'll be amazed by the huge trees, ferns, palm trees, and lush foliage that surrounds you. All our guides are amazing tour guides, who know Palau, nature, and culture like no other. They'll tell you stories about palm trees, crabs, nuts, and of course Yapese stone money, which was mined in Palau and transported to Yap, where it is still used today as a means of payment.

Don't forget to bring a flashlight, as there are some caves in the forest that are better explored with a lamp. You'll be amazed by the beauty of these caves, which are like something out of an Indiana Jones movie.

After your hike through the rainforest, it's time to head back to the water. Your kayak will be waiting for you, our staff have already lowered them into the water. You'll get comfortable in your kayak, and our guide will lead you along the Rock Island limestone formations, which are even more impressive from the kayak than from the day boat.

Then, your guide will take you into the first cave, and from there you'll silently glide through some other caves with stalactites on the way to a picturesque mangrove channel. This channel will lead you to a beautiful little bay, where you'll leave your kayaks and visit another cave on foot before heading to the nearby "Lee Marvin Beach."

"Lee Marvin Beach" takes its name from the actor who shot "Hell in the Pacific" here in 1968. This beautiful beach is where you'll find the next part of your adventure - a delicious Bento Lunch prepared by our Barracuda Restaurant chefs. Cold beer, soft drinks and refreshing cocktails will beavailable (additional charge), too, so you can relax and enjoy the culinary specialties while taking in the tropical view.

After lunch, you'll have some time to relax on the beach, take selfies with a tropical background, build sandcastles, and enjoy another beer. You can process your impressions, and soak up the sun before your next adventure.

Your final stop for the day is the Mandarin Fish Lake, which is only a few minutes away by speedboat from "Lee Marvin Beach" on the way back to Fish 'n Fins. The Mandarin Fish Lake consists of two shallow bays, in which you can watch mandarin fish in the shade of the Rock Islands even during the day.

If you're looking for an adventure that combines culture, history, and outdoor activities, the Indiana Jones Tour is the perfect option for you. Fish 'n Fins offers this tour to anyone looking to explore the beauty of Palau's Rock Islands and learn more about its fascinating culture and history.

Don't miss the chance to kayak through mangroves and limestone caves, visit a Yapese stone money quarry, relax and BBQ on the beach, and snorkel in Mandarin Fish Lake. And most importantly, don't forget to bring your camera to capture the breathtaking views and unforgettable moments.

Fish 'n Fins takes pride in offering an unforgettable experience to all its guests, and the Indiana Jones Tour is no exception.
