Paul Heaton will perform the remainder of his UK Tour dates alone after Jacqui Abbott pulled out of the trek due to illness.

The pair were mid-way through a run of rescheduled UK dates, including a number of free gigs for NHS staff, but former The Beautiful South star Jacqui has been forced to withdraw due to vocal issues.

Ahead of Monday night’s gig at the Bonus Arena in Hull, Paul said: “Thank you for all your kind messages and support for Jacqui following the announcement yesterday.

“Sadly due to medical advice Jacqui will not be able to perform at the forthcoming shows,” the statement added, revealing that Heaton will perform alone with his band at the gigs in Hull, Birmingham and London this week.

In her own statement, Jacqui added: “To miss the last stretch of something we’d waited so long for is truly gutting, and I wish to say to everyone how sorry I am because it’s meant from the heart.

“Paul, the lads, and all the people behind the scenes have been supportive. Thank you for every kind word.”

Three further shows are scheduled this week, including stops in Birmingham and two nights at The London Palladium, before a handful of November dates.

It remains to be seen whether Jacqui will rejoin the tour.

Paul Heaton and the wonderful Jacqui Abbott at the Radisson Blur, Galway on 26/10.

An excellent set with Heaton on form and Jacqui nailing the songs with more confidence each year.

Saw these 25yrs ago at Middlesbrough's Arena, it was Jacqui Abbott's first ever performance with the Beautiful South, she gets better with every gig.

Tonight they performed songs from their 3 Albums plus some classics from the Housemartins (Happy Hour and more) and the Beautiful South.

The whole place was bouncing and if you haven't seen these two perform with their excellent band get a ticket and see what you've been missing.

The intimate setting of The Electric Ballroom was a great place to see Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott and they didn't disappoint!

Running through a combination of their current album, and their back-book led to a great evening and the vocals from both were crisp and clear.

I'd recommend picking up tickets and will see them again myself.

Brilliant concert - great atmosphere - and an excellent selection of songs that covered the new, the old, and the properly old! A really fun, entertaining evening that everyone enjoyed. Thanks Paul and Jacqui!

LAST NIGHT: GIG REVIEW: Paul Heaton (get well soon Jacqui Abbott) and Billy Bragg at The 02

Posted on December 18, 2022 by mrmonstagigz

By Neil Durham

WORTH A LOOK?: ****

WHEN?: Saturday 17 December, last night of the tour

SETLIST: I Drove Her Away With My Tears; From Under The Covers; Too Much For One (Not Enough For Two); One Last Love Song; Everybody’s Talkin’; Old Red Eyes Is Back; A Good Day Is Hard To Find; A Little Time; The People Who Grinned Themselves Top Death; Five Get Over Excited; I’ll Sail This Ship Alone; Liars’ Bar; My Mother’s Womb; Me And The Farmer; Prettiest Eyes; Manchester; Heatongrad; Rotterdam; Song For Whoever; Think For A Minute; Happy Hour; Perfect 10; You Keep It All In; Caravan Of Love

36 years ago The Housemartins’ cover of Caravan Of Love was number 1 and it is the last song tonight and elevated brilliantly by an enthusiastic audience singalong.

  • Read on for reasons including why Heaton and Abbott are in the Guinness Book Of World Records

Get well soon to Heaton’s singing partner Jacqui Abbott who is not well enough to appear here, and despite this absence and the rail strike, The 02 is packed for this last Saturday gig ahead of Christmas Eve.

Support act Billy Bragg reminisces about playing as Thursday night support at The Mitre pub around the corner from this venue at the south end of the Blackwall Tunnel under the Thames.

Later Heaton explains that The Housemartins played their too and Bragg covered their petrol money home to Hull because they had not attracted enough of an audience to pay for it themselves.

We 1st saw Bragg live at Portsmouth Guildhall in the 80s and his fine set is characterised by a lot of political banter in which he reveals he turns 65 on 20 December and urging his audience to support the trans/non binary community reflected in the tweaks to the lyrics of our favourite song of his, Sexuality .

paul heaton tour cancelled

We never saw The Housemartins live but we did catch The Beautiful South in 1989 at Aldershot West End Centre and more recently Heaton and Abbott were 1 of our highlights from this year’s Glastonbury Festival .

Calling your debut album London 0 Hull 4 may not necessarily endear you to a capital audience but that was 1986 and it appears all forgotten as he emerges to the strains of Maybe It’s Because I’m A Londoner .

The sound is occasionally off at the start of the set and Heaton looks concerned. His band is covering for the absent Abbott and Heaton delights in telling the crowd that they are in the Guinness Book Of Records as being the oldest male/female duo to have had a UK number 1 album.

paul heaton tour cancelled

Our companion remarks what a brilliant lyricist Heaton is and he also has an ear for a pop hook that has resulted in a massively underappreciated near 40-year career of hits.

However charttopper A Little Time is rather thrown under the bus here in a rock version that does much to obscure its charm.

Abbott’s absence means those male band members stepping into her shoes occasionally give a slightly odd lyrical interpretation to songs including the saucy Perfect 10 for example (sample lyric: ‘When he’s at my gate with a big fat 8, You wanna see the smile on my face.’)

Heaton shows just how much his audience means to him towards the end of this show when he signals to security that a crowd member is struggling and in need of help.

A few years ago we saw a pre-Christmas show by Madness at this venue which just felt a little too raucous and, although tonight’s crowd were singing along from the off and determined to have a good time, it was always good-natured, communal and lots of fun. Here’s to the next 40 years of hits.

It was a last minute purchase, i had always wanted to see Billy Bragg, he did not dissappoint. Having loved the housemartins in my youth, it was fantastic to see Paul Heaton live, his voice is amazing and his catalogue of songs just pure class. Until the next tour.

Music stars Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott are capping tickets for their new tour because of the cost of living crisis.

The Caravan of Love singer said their arena dates this winter, which include shows in London, Manchester and Birmingham, would only cost £30.

He said: "It's really important through the coming months and possibly years, that we tell the fans, 'we are getting paid enough and we want to keep it low for you'.

"I think people are delighted. I'm very much against greed within the industry, I feel that there is quite a lot. We are trying to just battle and do it for as low as we can and set a bit of an example."

The duo are not alone. Singer Tom Grennan, 27 also has been praised for his efforts to make tickets for his UK arena tour next March as low as possible. "The pinch is real and I take it very seriously," he said.

His decision was backed by Paul who replied: "That's brilliant Tom! Hopefully other artists of your generation will realise, like you have, that this is going to really hit people hard. All the best."

Fans have questioned the costs of some forthcoming shows, with Arctic Monkeys from £72 and Bruce Springsteen tickets up to a whopping £500.

The performer said he's trying to 'set a bit of an example'

Heaton delighted fans in May by putting thousands of pounds behind the bar at 60 pubs to celebrate his 60th birthday.

He said at the time that he had originally planned to mark the occasion with a bicycle tour, on which he would have visited and performed at 60 pubs in the UK and Ireland.

The musician – who was previously a member of band The Beautiful South alongside Jacqui, 48 – said the idea was shelved due to recording delays caused by the pandemic.

He had said: "The next best way to celebrate this coming of age is to handpick 60 pubs across the UK and Ireland and put a given amount of money behind the bar of each."

Paul Heaton received Q’s final Classic Songwriter award as thanks.

Paul Heaton thanked by Q magazine staff for 'selfless' donation

The former Beautiful South songwriter gave a ‘large sum’ to help staff when the music publication closed

The musician Paul Heaton has been praised after the final editor of Q magazine revealed the singer’s “amazingly kind” gesture to staff after the music publication closed.

Ted Kessler said Heaton, known for his work with the Housemartins and the Beautiful South, donated a “large sum” which was shared between more than 40 workers.

“It really was the most amazingly kind, selfless, generous act,” Kessler tweeted. “For some, it meant a bill could be paid.”

The staff of Q, which closed in July because of the financial strain brought by the coronavirus pandemic, commissioned a final award for Heaton as thanks.

It was inscribed “Paul Heaton: Q’s all-time Classic Songwriter. Thank you for everything.”

Heaton, 58, shared a video message and said the donation “was just meant to make sure people weren’t left on their arse”.

A message to @TedKessler1 and all at @QMagazine ... pic.twitter.com/LeMP0HdIDM — Paul Heaton (@PaulHeatonSolo) October 9, 2020

He praised the magazine and said he was “upset” at its closure. “I wish everybody the best,” he added.

Kessler shared the story on Twitter posting: “We had the Roundhouse booked for two nights for the Q awards next week. We didn’t have talent sorted when we had to Covid-cancel in April, but Nadine Shah was presenting and the two gigs were Liam Gallagher one night, Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott the other.

“The only award we knew for sure was to Paul Heaton, as we’d heard he’d never won one. Think of all the brilliant songs he’s written for the Housemartins, Beautiful South etc. Millions of records sold. No Q award (or Brit) for his songwriting. So we knew he’d be Classic Songwriter.”

Kessler said a few days after Q closed, Heaton got in touch and said as a thank you for all the support the magazine had given him, he was going to donate a large sum. The editor said he “politely declined” but Heaton was insistent.

Kessler added: “I accepted the donation and shared it among over 40 staff and freelancers working for Q at the time, all of whose minds – like mine – were blown.

“We got him that award in the end. Britain’s greatest living pop star. A true legend.”

In March, Heaton and his former Beautiful South bandmate Jacqui Abbott announced a free concert for NHS workers but the performance has been postponed because of the pandemic.

LIVE REVIEW: Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott – Globe Theatre, Stockton-on-Tees

Paul Heaton

Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott set a price cap of £30 per ticket for their current tour. They wanted to keep prices as low as possible during a cost-of-living crisis in the UK and railing against greed in the music industry. You even got Billy Bragg as the support act. Value for money, indeed. However, there was one thing missing…

Jacqui Abbott. That’s what was missing. Following medical advice, Jacqui had to pull out of the Bridlington, Glasgow and Stockton-on-Tees shows. Bugger. Would Mr Heaton and his band concede defeat and call off the gig? Would they fairy cakes!

Paul Heaton

Heaton and his band started with two songs from the latest Heaton & Abbott album, “N.K-Pop”, with an early track from The Beautiful South sandwiched in between. The third of these songs, “Too Much For One (Not Enough For Two)”, seemed fitting with Abbott’s absence. Heaton apologised for Jacqui’s absenteeism but said he and his band would do their best without Abbott’s vocal talents. In fairness, his guitarist, bassist and drummer all did a valiant job on singing duties. They weren’t Abbott, but they deserve plaudits for their efforts.

All gigs tend to have trigger points where the crowd have their blue touch paper lit. The first big firework of the night was “Old Red Eyes Is Back” from The Beautiful South’s 1992 album “0898”. The sell-out crowd began to sing and dance in unison. Although a few people chose to cancel their tickets after the announcement of Abbott’s absence, they were quickly snapped up by those who had missed out when the tickets first went on sale.

Paul Heaton

After the 2018 revamped version of “A Little Time”, firework number two was launched as a duo of great songs by The Housemartins – “The People Who Grinned Themselves To Death” and “Five Get Over Excited” – were performed for the lively and tightly-packed Stockton audience. It’s been a while since I’ve been to a gig where ownership of a shoehorn would be of such a benefit. Sardines anyone?

The crowd got the opportunity to fine-tune their best singing voices as Heaton delivered a fantastic rendition of “I’ll Sail This Ship Alone”. I didn’t realise just how popular this song was amongst the Heatonistas. We were treated to twenty-five songs taken from twelve albums by three different Heaton projects. With such an arsenal of material at his disposal, choosing a setlist must be challenging.

Paul Heaton

Heaton flexed his political views at various points in the evening, particularly with the anthemic “Heatongrad”. “ When your friendly local tax dodger is lynched for all to see/And the newspaper editors swing from ape and tree/When the trains and buses, education, health and safety’s free/Welcome to Heatongrad “. A decent chunk of the crowd would happily take up residency in this perfectly painted utopia by Heaton.

The night’s highlight for me was Heaton taking on the greatly loved Abbott-sung classic “Rotterdam”. Heaton said he couldn’t sing it like Jacqui but would do his best if the crowd would help him. Challenge accepted. Almost 3,000 people raised the roof as they belted out this beloved hit. Another firework was successfully launched across the Globe Theatre. Bramall Lane, home to Heaton’s beloved Sheffield United, couldn’t make any more noise than the Stockton crowd achieved. Beautiful.

Paul Heaton

As Heaton and his band careered through several more hits, such as “Perfect 10” and “Happy Hour”, we came to the night’s last song. He encouraged his flock to join in with the 1986 number one for The Housemartins, “Caravan of Love”. They responded with gusto.

This epitomised the positive feeling that pulsed through the crowd all evening and their desire to enjoy themselves, albeit without their fallen colleague Abbott. The Church of Heaton was alive, joyous and full of praise, and this was the epilogue. I felt pretty emotional. The night’s last fireworks were, quite literally, launched from the front of the stage. Heaton exited stage left – his work complete. On Twitter, he stated, “We’ll sorely miss Jacqui, but our intent is to make those who refund their tickets bitterly regret that decision.” Job done.

Here endeth the lesson.

Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott praised for ‘brilliant’ reason behind capping their tour tickets at £30

The duo said they are ultimately "against greed in the industry".

Emily Sergeant

Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott have explained the “brilliant” reason why they’ve chosen to cap the price of their tour tickets at £30.

While the going rate for tickets to arena and stadium tours tends to hover around the £70-£80 or more mark nowadays, the pair – who were famously part of pop rock group The Beautiful South , which Heaton formed in 1988 and Abbott joined as lead vocalist from 1994-2007 – have said they are determined to keep prices affordable amid the rising cost of living crisis .

The duo announced their huge UK arena tour towards the end of August, and have released their fifth studio album titled ‘N.K-Pop’ today.

Heaton and Abbott have been on the receiving end of a lot of praise from members of the public after making an appearance on BBC Breakfast this morning to speak about rising costs in the music industry while promoting their new album.

Heaton said he was ultimately “against greed in the industry”.

“It’s really important that in the coming months, and possibly years, that we tell the fans that we are getting paid enough and want to keep it low for you,” he explained.

“I think people are delighted.

“I’m very much against greed in the industry. I feel as though there is quite a lot. We are trying to just battle and say ‘we’ll do it for as low as we can’.”

Heaton – who has some 15 million album sales under his belt, with a celebrated music career that also included a stint as the frontman of The Housemartins – said himself and Abbott are looking to “set a bit of an example” for the rest of the music industry going forward with their decision to cap tour ticket prices at £30.

A clip from the BBC Breakfast interview has been going viral on social media today, with fans of the pair calling them “legends”.

One fan said on Twitter : “What a man. Brilliant. Understands people are struggling and he’s making enough why can’t others think like that. Top top man.”

“Need more Paul Heatons in this world. It’s as simple as that. Legend, hero, good human being,” another fan added, while a third said : “Paul Heaton is one of the absolute greats in the music world and yet rarely gets any recognition. It’s a travesty.”

The award-winning duo’s appearance on BBC Breakfast comes after they announced they would be making a return to Manchester on their UK tour in December – which will include some of their biggest-ever shows as a duo, with support from special guest Billy Bragg at all dates.

They’ll be gigging at the AO Arena in Manchester, as well as the O2 Arena in London, and Sheffield’s Utilita Arena as part of the upcoming tour.

This isn’t the first time this year that Paul Heaton has gone out of his way to make life a little easier for his fans, as he cemented his place in the nation’s hearts back in May by putting  £1,000 behind the bar of 60 pubs  across the UK and Ireland.

The gesture was done so that people could have a drink on him to celebrate his 60th birthday.

It’s been a bit of an up-and-down spring but the warm weather is finally starting to arrive here in Manchester, with temperatures reaching up to 21°C this week and the summery vibes only set to increase over the next month or so as meteorologists are predicting a 30°C heatwave soon enough.

March onwards has been a pure mix of blustery winds, grey skies and flashes of rainfall, with just a few glimpses of sun peeking through and the thermometer has still been struggling to get into double digits – until now anyway.

As we leave April behind, the forecast across the UK is looking a lot brighter and according to the likes of the Met Office , those numbers are going to keep creeping as we head deeper into the month.

In fact, some experts are predicting that Britain could be set for a heatwave with temperatures of 30°C and over in just over a month’s time. It better bloody hurry up, put it that way.

According to Jim Dale, Senior Meteorologist at British Weather Services, while much of May will be a bit of a mixed bag, “towards the latter stage and into June and July… we will see climbing temperatures well into the 30s in the prone areas.”

As reported by Birmingham Live , while Dale didn’t detail the kind of heat Manchester can expect, specifically, the indication is that the region is beginning to dry and the country as a whole is now heading “in the right direction”.

Although it likely won’t be until the very tail end of May that we start to see the summer as we know rolling in, the trends around the continent are suggesting positive signs, adding that “a lot of Europe is getting the scorching hot temperatures” of late.

The Met Office’s Tom Morgan also warned The Guardian that we get anything close to a heatwave this month, so we’ll have to be patient and wait for the turn come June time, especially up North.

While we did enjoy a heatwave in September of last year , hitting a top end of 33.5°C, the chances of the country challenging the most recent temperature record sat back in 2022 (40.3°C in July 2023) are still looking slim.

April has been described as a “month of two halves” overall and let’s just say we’re looking forward to a strong showing this May.

Manchester’s huge new arena the Co-op Live has assured fans that it will definitely, actually, for sure open this week.

The staggering new music venue beside the Etihad Stadium has been hit by a couple of high-profile delays in the last fortnight.

Although a test event with Rick Astley went ahead on 21 April, giving a small audience a glimpse inside the state-of-the-art arena , the brakes were slammed on soon afterwards.

Co-op Live pushed its opening date back while it ironed out some kinks, namely ‘power supply issues’, and underwent rigorous testing to ‘run all shows safely’.

That meant Peter Kay was rescheduled to 29 and 30 April… but then got postponed again , along with The Black Keys, who were meant to perform last weekend.

All the delays have left fans panicking that their shows will also be delayed, with some huge shows like Olivia Rodrigo, Take That, and Liam Gallagher lined up in the coming weeks and months.

But Co-op Live has now issued a statement reassuring gig-goers that they are full steam ahead and ready to open as planned this week.

The first act to perform here officially will now be A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie on 1 May (not quite as local a name as they were gunning for, but we move).

He’ll be followed by Olivia Rodrigo and her Guts Tour, who will perform two sold-out gigs on 3 and 4 May.

Olivia Rodrigo has announced a Manchester gig at Co-op Live

Then Keane will play the Co-op Live on 5 May to mark 20 years since the release of Hopes and Fears.

Co-op Live posted: “Let’s do this! Less than 48 hours until we kick off our full opening season.

“Our scheduled shows with @aboogievsartist, @oliviarodrigo and @keaneofficial are going ahead.

“Ticket holders can expect an email with everything they need to know about this week’s events to land in your inboxes tomorrow!”

Fans have breathed a sigh of relief at the news, with one person writing: “YAY THANK GOD OMG THIS IS AMAZING WAS LITERALLY HAVJNG A MENTAL BREAKDOWN BOUT OLIVIA BEING CANCELLED.”

Another commented: “THANK GOD!!! 4th mayyyy.”

Someone else posted: “IM SO HAPPY AHHHHHH I’VE BEEN NERVOUS ALL WEEK BUT NOW I KNOW ITS GONNA BE FINE AHHH.”

Olivia Rodrigo fans are BIG believers in an all-caps comment, clearly.

Co-op Live will open in Manchester on Wednesday 1 May.

It’s going to be worth the wait, we’re pretty sure…

Paul Heaton: ‘I’m about overthrowing the power in this country. The monarchy, parliament – and the police’

The musician talks about reuniting with jacqui abbott, finally being recognised for his songwriting and setting a fair price for gigs.

author avatar image

In a scene in the 2018 documentary From Hull to Heatongrad , Paul Heaton stands in a bedroom of his house in south Manchester and goes on an only-joking-but-not-really rant about his lack of recognition from the music industry . He points at the wall, the only awards on his shelf are for amateur football (“player of the year, Marsh United 1980-81”). “I’ve got nowt for music,” he says. “Give me something! And it’s got to be for best songwriter. Just putting it out there. Or best song. Oh I’m joking,” he continues. “I’d take anything”.

The public gave him enormous recognition long ago: forming in Hull when Heaton was on the dole, The Housemartins had huge hits in the 80s with “Happy Hour” and yuletide number one “Caravan of Love”. And after their debut single “Song for Whoever” reached number two in 1988, you were only ever the flick of a radio switch away from hearing The Beautiful South’s 90’s soul-pop hits like “Rotterdam (or Anywhere)” and “Perfect 10” – it was once estimated that one in seven households in the country owned a Beautiful South record.

This year, though, he finally got that new trinket: Heaton was awarded an Ivor Novello for Outstanding Song Collection. It was just acknowledgment for a brilliantly consistent songwriter who mixes lyrical wit and bite with the sort of melodies that you can’t get out of your head. So how did he feel?

“I was incredibly grateful,” he says, “but I’ve been sarcastic about how late it came. Even the wording, it’s like some goofy thing – ‘songwriting collection’ is like the ‘most improved player’ trophy,” he says, laughing. “Someone that hasn’t scored a goal and has been on the bench for the whole season but they’re the only one who’s not been given anything yet.”

Still, it was something of a belated correction for the way The Beautiful South – never a critics favourite – have been somewhat airbrushed out of the 90s music story. “It feels a little bit like history’s been rewritten,” Heaton says. “We’d never be in one of those 200 best albums of the 90s lists. But we didn’t particularly sound or look like bands that you associate with the 90s. And it can be quite helpful not to have a sound that dated. It can be limiting if you sound like a band from the 90s. It’s though you’re doing a permanent revival”.

It’s turned out to be quite a year for Heaton. Last month his fifth album with former Beautiful South singer Jacqui Abbott, N.K-Pop , followed 2020’s Manchester Calling in reaching number one. Full of exuberant, Heatonian pop-rock and soul, it has capped a successful decade’s reunion with Abbott, who left The Beautiful South seven years before they split in 2007. “And it wasn’t necessarily my idea either,” Heaton says. “But it was a great idea. I was worried we’d be associated with the past, that singing again with Jacqui might just sound like a Beautiful South tribute”. He says the initial reaction to new songs made him feel more comfortable with the idea. “It can still be a challenge working with Jacqui, as she can’t always turn up (Abbott’s son is severely autistic ). But it’s been brilliant”.

N.K-Pop shows age has not taken away Heaton’s edge: it deals with love and loss (including his mother’s death), but also politics, extremism and nationhood. Handing over his Ivor Novello, broadcaster Stuart Maconie said Heaton had two aims in life: to write the perfect pop song, and to overthrow the state. Heaton laughs in half-agreement: raised in Sheffield and then Surrey, he was politicised by Arthur Scargill and the miners’ strike , and calls himself “a more old-school political animal on the left” (in the 90s he didn’t vote for Tony Blair, but the Socialist Labour Party). “So I’m more about overthrowing the power in this country. That includes part of the state, but also the monarchy, House of Lords and probably House of Commons. And police, obviously”.

New song “Sunny Side Up” rails against the media landscape turning people to extremism. I suggest it’s often his generation that has proved suspectable to this rhetoric. “I know a lot of people my age who I used to go to the pub with and none of them were interested in politics. I’d say now out of 40, 20 of them have been radicalised on Brexit , on immigration, etc. They’re not nasty pieces of work at all most of them. I would still be able to sit down and have a good chat. But if you look at their social media stuff, which I try not to do, it’s all very familiar right-wing stuff. It seems like a gradual slide into it. I think a lot of people were reading stuff in lockdown. At the heart of it I think people are just pissed off with everything. But I think you can convert these people to a positive course. There hasn’t been anyone yet who has said: ‘Let’s take hold of Brexit and turn it into something left wing.’”

Heaton turned 60 in May, “a nice time to be alive”. To celebrate, he placed £1,000 behind the bar at 60 of his favourite pubs across the country so people could have a drink on him. A formerly heavy drinker (“I drink far less these days, previously it was part of the day”), pub culture has been a central theme to Heaton’s life and work. It’s how he writes – like previous albums, N.K-Pop was written while drinking on holiday abroad – and some of his best songs, such as “Happy Hour” and “Old Red Eyes is Back”, deal with the highs and lows of boozing.

He’s owned a pub, The Kings Arms in Salford, and for his 50 th birthday underwent a pub tour, cycling 2,500 miles over 40 days. “I suppose it’s microcosm of society, isn’t it? A pub is a weird mix of characters that you wouldn’t get anywhere else. And people are quite frank in the pub. I like that.”

He says the birthday gesture was a way to show appreciation to the people who’ve supported his career. He was taken aback by the reaction: he was inundated with photos and videos; on a BBC News report, one guy called the event “an alternative Jubilee”. “I suppose we live in an era of greed, so it was nice to get everyone in the pub.”

Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott Credit ALEX LAKE Image via 1tedcummings@gmail.com

This is typical of Heaton, who we can safely chalk up as one of the good guys. Recently, he’s played free gigs for NHS staff; when music monthly Q Magazine closed, he donated £35,000 to the editors and staff; in 2017 he offered to nationalise his back catalogue, but was rebuffed by then Conservative Business Secretary Greg Clark. “I thought it was a good idea. You could quite easily take the royalties and run an adult learning centre”. It’s easy to imagine a host of other secret acts of kindness, similar to George Michael.

On their upcoming winter tour, Heaton and Abbott have kept ticket prices capped at a noble £30, an act to combat what he previously called “industry greed” amid the cost of living crisis . The price is a snip compared to other major artists, and the gesture has gone down well with his fanbase and beyond. Today, though, he seems slightly uneasy about it.

“In retrospect, it looks a bit silly,” he says. “But it wasn’t meant to undercut people, it was meant to show it can be done. It does seem people are unhappy with their favourite bands over ticket prices. But I didn’t even think of other bands when we set price. And look, we’ll still make a profit on the tour. We’re just reducing the profit that we’d make.”

Heaton seems remarkably unmoved by money and success: he lives a modest, neighbourly existence with his wife in a terraced house in Withington, Manchester. “I’m determined that money won’t rule my decisions. Because money is controlling, and it’s incredibly discomforting for some people. And it can be for me. So I try not to let it control me. So what probably comes across as socialist, is I actually get quite angry about how much I’m paid, and think I want to do something about it. And what I do is try to make other people happy with what I’ve received. It sounds a bit corny and cliched. But it’s a more positive thought about what you can do with your money.”

The relative anonymity suits him. “I’m more famous for my songs than I am facially. I probably could have walked into a few of those pubs and sat down and had a drink and wouldn’t have got noticed,” he says. “And that’s how I like it.”

They have already made two songs available from the album – the poignant ballad ‘Still’, which was described as ‘ beautifully heartbreaking’  by Dawn French, and the gospel pop song ‘Too Much For One (Not Enough For Two). Paul & Jacqui’s previous album ‘Manchester Calling’ went straight to No 1 on its release in March ’20.

Paul Heaton ’s songwriting genius was recognised at the prestigious Ivor Awards 2022 where noted author/radio DJ Stuart Maconie presented him with a long overdue gong for ‘Outstanding Song Collection’.  Heaton  is one of the UK’s most successful songwriters with some 15 million album sales under his belt. He first came to prominence in the early 80s as front man of The Housemartins (the same group that gave us Norman ‘Fatboy Slim’ Cook).  The Housemartins released two albums ‘London 0 Hull  4’ (’86) and ‘The People Who Grinned Themselves To Death’ (’87).  In ’88  Heaton  formed The Beautiful South, who released 10 hugely successful albums – ‘Welcome To The Beautiful South’ (’89), Choke (’90), ‘0898 Beautiful South’ (’92), ‘Miaow’ (’94), ‘Blue Is The Colour’ (’96), ‘Quench’ (’98), ‘Painting It Red’ (2000), ‘Gaze’ (’03), ‘Golddiggas, Headnodders & Pholk Songs’ (’04) and ‘Superbi’ (’06).   In 2001  Heaton  took a break from The Beautiful South and released his first solo album ‘Fat Chance’. The Beautiful South called it a day in 2007 citing ‘musical similarities’.   Jacqui Abbott  was lead vocalist in The Beautiful South from ’94 to 2000 and she sang many of their signature hits including ‘Rotterdam’, ‘Perfect 10’, ‘Don’t Marry Her’ and ‘Dream A Little Dream’.   Paul Heaton  went on to release two further solo albums: ‘The Cross-Eyed Rambler’ (’08) and ‘Acid Country’ (’10).  In 2011  Heaton  wrote a musical called ‘The 8 th ’ based on the Seven Deadly Sins and asked  Jacqui  to sing one of the parts.  They have since released four acclaimed albums as a duo: ‘What Have We Become’ (’14), ‘Wisdom, Laughter and Lines’ (’15), ‘Crooked Calypso’ (’17) and ‘Manchester Calling’ (’20).  In 2019 Paul released a career spanning compilation of his biggest hits entitled ‘The Last King Of Pop’.

2022 saw  Heaton  reach a significant birthday, which he celebrated in typically idiosyncratic style by putting £1,000 behind the bar of 60 carefully chosen pubs across the UK and Ireland so that fans could have a drink on him. PHOTOS OF PAUL HEATON & JACQUI ABBOTT HERE:  https://bit.ly/3JQxrR1
