Bhavnagar Tourism Guide: Popular Tourist Attractions & Places to See

Bhavnagar is a tiny town that greets everybody with its richness of traditions, enlaced in the modern life. Due to its closeness to the sea, the city has always been an important centre of trade and commerce of cotton goods. Today this large provincial city has some intriguing temples, museums and also serves as a gateway to several parks and reserves including Velavadar Blackbuck National Park. The city has associations with Mahatma Gandhi, who went to university here, and relics of his life can be seen at Gandhi Smriti in the 1895 AD Barton museum building, which also has a collection of coins, stamps, guns and other arms, sculpture and folk arts. Founded in the year 1823 as the fortified capital of Bhavsinhji Gohil, Bhavnagar, today, stands as an important industrial hub of India. The Gohils had moved from Marwar and established their center at a village called Vadva which is the present Bhavnagar city. Earlier, the city was protected by a fort as it used to be the major port for almost two centuries connecting places like Africa, Mozambique, Zanzibar, Singapore and the Persian Gulf with India. Later, the successors of Bhavsinhji Gohil continued doing trade in a similar manner. By the 19th century, Bhavnagar attained a status of a developed state; in fact, it was the first state in India to build its personal railway system, without any aid from the central government. Applauds and laurels didn't end here, Bhavnagar was also the first state to join the Indian Union.

Book and history lovers have lot many reasons to visit Bhavnagar as the city is home to the classiest and oldest Barton Library, Barton Museum and Gandhi Smriti, a significant Gandhian institution founded in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi in January 1948. It has around 40,000 books on Gandhian thought and social sciences, a Gandhi picture gallery, a museum and Khadi Gram Udyog bhandar. The Nilambagh, once the former ruler's residence, is also an important tourist attraction of Bhavnagar. This majestic attraction of Bhavnagar is now converted into a hotel property with a great banquet hall and peacocks in the garden. The marble temple of Takhteshwar, about 5 km on the way to Mahuva atop a hill is another place of tourists interest. This beautiful structure in marble was built a century ago and offers a panoramic view of scenic surroundings.

Bhavnagar is also an empyrean for the wildlife aficionados, who wish to explore the best of nature in the most pristine form. Bhavnagar's Gaurishankar Lake, frosqm where the city gets its water supply, is a popular picnic spot. Victoria Park, a protected tropical forest, few hours from the teeming metropolis, is often visited by many wildlife lovers. One can explore the wilderness in the park by walking on the foot, or by hiring a cab. Towards the North side of Bhavnagar is 36 sq km flat grassland called Valavadar National Park, home to over 1000 blackbucks. A walk through the park at dusk provides glimpses of blackbucks, wolves and nilgai that concentrate at the park's watering holes. Also, there is a museum which houses ancient coins, copper plates and seals found in the area.

For visitors, Bhavnagar is also a convenience base for exploring the magnificent temples town of Palitana. This hustling pilgrimage town, 51 kms southwest of Bhavnagar, is an important site in terms of Jainism history and heritage. An extraordinary cluster of 1008 temples crowns the two main summits of Palitana's hill and covers the saddle linking them. As well as some superb examples of Jain art and architecture, Palitana is also a significant centre for the Muslim religion, possessing an amazing shrine of Angar Pir.

Also called as Velavadar Blackbuck National Park, it is the place to spot the black bucks. It was founded in the year of 1976 and falls in the Bhal region of the Saurashtra at Velavadar. The maximum area it covers is around 36 square km and is mainly covered in scrubby plains and grassland.

The national park is situated at about 70 km from the Bhavnagar district. You can spot number of black bucks (1500 in number and found in the group of 25-30), Indian wolf, jackals, fox, cat, blue bull antelope, wild pigs, hares, etc.

In winter the park is filled with the migratory bird like Sandgrouse and larks. The best time to visit this lovely park is between October to June. You need to visit the park in the private vehicle and carry the food and drink.

Takhteshwar Temple

How to reach : 3 km from Bhavnagar railway station & 4 km away from BHU Airport.

The magnificent temple is located on a small hill( the highest in Bhavnagar) from where you can get a 360 degree view of the whole city and also of gulf of Khambhat. The temple was built in the year 1893 under the patronage of Maharaja TakhtSinhji.

The temple is built in the white marble and is dedicated to lord Shiva. The temple has a peaceful atmosphere and people come here to sit and relax and have a self-time. It is accessible by two/four vehicles and after that there are some easy going steps to reach the temple.

Khodiyar Maa Temple

How to reach : 14 km travel distance from Bhavnagar Railway Station.

The temple is about 15 km from Bhavnagar, located on the bank of TataniyaWali Lake. It was constructed by the then maharaja of Bhavnagar in 1911,KhodiyarMaawas the deity of the royal family. The century old temple stands on 36 pillars that support the Mandap, on which the presiding deity resides.

The nearby villagers consider the place as their pilgrimage and visit it regularly. The best time to visit the temple is in winter. It is easily reachable by two/four wheelers. Accommodation is available in the temple premise and it also has a small market nearby.

Aksharwadi Temple

This temple in Bhavnagar is dedicated to BhagwanSwaminarayan. The beautifully constructed temple is a treat to eyes and architecturally magnificent.

The temple houses AksharPurushottamMaharaj, Radhe Krishna, Shiv Parvati, Hanuman and Ganesha. The temple has the Nilkantvarni that is blessed by Pramukh swami Maharaj to be wish fulfilling.

The temple has Darshan timings which should be taken care of at the time of the visit.

You can also do Abhishekam at a very nominal price. The surrounding of the temple is well maintained and has a aura of itself that inculcates peace and tranquillity within you.

Nishkalank Mahadev Temple

The temple is yet another beautiful addition to the list of the must visit places in Bhavnagar. it is situated in Koliyak village in Bhavnagar. The temple is almost 1 km from the sea shore towards the sea so you can imagine the amount of water that would hide the temple only to be seen again when the water receded.

When the water hides the temple, the only thing you can see is the flag and believe us it is something to look forward. It is not a easy job to visit the temple as there is muddy water and rocks that need to be crossed for reaching it.

It is said that the Shiva Lingawas made by the Pandavas who used to worship Lord Shiva here.

Please carry necessary shoes to visit the temple. You can enjoy the sea side food and coconut water later on.

Gaurishankar Lake

The lake was constructed by Gaurishankar Oza in 1872, the Deewan of Bhavnagar. Victoria forest forms the backdrop of this lake and thus the scenic beauty is very much palpable here.

The lake is very much well maintained and a place to visit with family and friends. It is also called Bortalav. You can avail the boating facilities at the lake and go for a good ride. There is a temple located at its bank. The lake has a reservoir. The Bhavnagar summer palace here makes the whole set up even more amazing.

The lake has an interesting planetarium, musical garden housed in the BalVatika, and boat house offering the boating facilities. The place is easily available by buses and private vehicles.
