The area that is now DeLand was once known as Persimmon Hollow due to the wild persimmons that used to grow there.

The town was later named after Henry Addison DeLand, a man who visited the area and fell in love with the land.

He bought 159 acres and began thinking of the community that could exist there.

Today, the City is approximately 19 and a half square miles large, a small town with a population of about 32,000.

Located in Central Florida, roughly 32 miles southwest of Daytona Beach and 34 miles north of Orlando in Volusia County, this city is known as the “Athens of Florida” because its founder envisioned it to be a place of culture and education like Athens, Greece.

Bill Dreggors Park is a public recreational park established in 2010 and named after the former City Commissioner Bill Dreggors.

Some days, we need enough space to enjoy our hobbies, and this park is just the place to do so.

There’s a playground for the kids to enjoy and a splash pad for them to have a blast in during the summer heat.

If you’ve got a bike with you, hit the BMX track and perform a few stunts.

Or hit the disc golf course with some buddies for a few rounds and good conversation.

And whenever the city has an event or concert coming up, it’s usually held at this park’s amphitheater.

All in all, this park is easily accessible for families who want to have some outdoor fun, fresh air, and peaceful surroundings.

There isn’t a lot of shade here, so you’ll want to pack up on sunscreen and your own water bottles for your activities.

DeLand is a charming town that is located in Central Florida. It was once known as the Persimmon Hollow because of many wild persimmons growing there. Today, you can find traces of its historic past dating all the way to the 1800’s. Part of this history is Henry Addison DeLand, a magnate from New York who envisioned building a citrus and tourism center in the area. He bought the land and established the town, naming it after himself. After the center didn’t work out due to a freeze destroying the citrus crops, DeLand went back home to New York but the town remained.

DeLand is a short drive away from Orlando and makes a great day trip if you’re visiting the area. It is one of the best small towns in Florida and perfect if you’re looking for a quiet getaway from the crowds. While it is a small town, there are plenty of things to do in DeLand.

1. Downtown/Main Street

One of the best ways to spend time in DeLand is to roam around the main street. There are many shops and restaurants that are fun to stop by, murals to find and little places where you can just sit back and enjoy the outdoors while people watching.

Since DeLand is a historic town, be on the lookout for historic buildings and unique architecture. One of these buildings is The Opera House. Although now it houses businesses and apartments, the historic building was once a center for plays and entertainment. There are other nearby markers to see such as the Circa 1885 and the Early Grocery Stores marker which is the site of the first grocery store.

2. Athens Theatre

You can’t miss the Athens Theatre while in DeLand. Not only is it one of the buildings that stands out architecturally in the town, it is an important part of the town’s history. The theatre was designed in 1921 by a prominent Orlando architect in an Italian Renaissance style.

After the theatre opened, it became the center of the town and one of the main entertainment hubs for people in the town. Opening night drew in people with a movie and a thrilling live theatre performance. Over the years, touring performers got to feature live stage shows in the theatre as well as many movies and even hosted community parties.

In the late 1900’2 the theatre fell into disrepair but has since been restored to its former glory. The theatre today has a theatrical season featuring various productions, concert performances, and other events and movies. The tickets are available to purchase online if you want to see a show at the DeLand Theatre.

This quaint coffeehouse chain serves up coffee drinks, breakfast items, and sandwiches. The sandwich bread is infused with herbs which takes the sandwich to the next level, the lobster bisque is one of the best in the area, and you can’t leave the café without trying one of the decadent pastries. It is a great spot for breakfast or lunch in DeLand.

Other restaurant favorites in DeLand include The Table that serves Southern inspired elegant dishes, Cress Restaurant, and Bake Chop which are all excellent options for dinner in DeLand. For dessert, be sure to stop by Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe for a taste of Key Lime Pie that is just like in Key West.

5. Do The Mural Walk

Did you know DeLand has its very own angel wings mural? The beautiful angel wings mural is one of the top places where you can take an Instagram photo capturing your visit to DeLand Florida. However, there are many more murals to explore on the DeLand mural walk that are just as beautiful.

One of the largest, colorful and detailed murals to see is the Pioneers at the Parceland mural which is located on the wall of a building at Rich Ave. and Woodland Blvd at the Pioneer park. Along with the murals, be sure to be on the lookout for sculptures as you walk around the town.

6. Historic Volusia County Courthouse

One of the most recognizable buildings in DeLand is the county courthouse. The Historic Volusia County Courthouse dates all the way back to 1929 when it was first built. The land was previously donated by Henry A. DeLand in 1888 in order to build a courthouse. The building was designed in a Neoclassical style featuring Corinthian columns, vaulted arches, marble staircase, and the distinctive copper clad dome.

The county courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a part of the historic downtown. It is located next to the Athens Theatre and a few steps away from the main street. If you decide to pick up a postcard from DeLand, there are many postcards that capture the beauty of this building.

7. The Art Museum

There are two locations of the Museum of Art in DeLand that are open to visit. One is located in downtown DeLand and the other one is further along the same street. The museum hosts rotating exhibits with different artists and artwork styles, gallery talks, workshops and other events. It is dedicated to collecting, preserving and displaying fine arts as well as being the source of cultural focus.

If you only have time to visit one branch, the museum in downtown DeLand is close in proximity to all of the other worthy stops. Once you visit the museum on the second floor, be sure to stop by the shop on the first to peruse the unique items in their store. The museums are closed on Mondays but are open from Tuesday to Sunday.

8. Stetson Mansion

Having been built in 1886 by hat magnate John B. Stetson, the Stetson Mansion is Florida’s most historic mansion of its size. It was built during what is known as the “Gilded Age” and was the most innovative luxury home of its time.

The mansion is a blend of a variety of styles but has classic details that shine throughout the years. The large home is three stories high and sits on acres of land along with a school house that first served as a kitchen and then as a school house once a kitchen was added to the main house.

Being from an affluent circle, the Stetson family held many parties and get togethers that hosted well-known names such as Henry Flagler, President Grover Cleveland, the Vanderbilts, the Carnegies, and many others.

Another noteworthy friend of the family was Thomas Edison who supervised the electrical install at the mansion. Stetson Mansion was one of the first homes to be built with electricity designed by Edison. Not only was the home designed with electricity, there was also steam heat, indoor plumbing, and a call bell system.

The mansion is only open for tours certain times of the year so be sure to look ahead on their calendar if you want to visit. At Christmastime, the mansion transforms into a glistening festive home, decorated beautifully complete with a Christmas tree making it one of the best places to visit for Christmas in Florida.

9. DeLand Farmer’s Market

Deland has a vibrant farmer’s market that is open every Friday. The marketplace gets filled up with over 80 vendors selling fresh local produce, plants, honey, baked goods, art & crafts, jewelry, clothing, and various other goods. This is one of the few farmer’s markets that is open in the evenings from 6 to 9 pm. and is located in the Artisan Alley. Be sure to stop by Midnight Sun Ice Cream truck for some delicious ice cream treats.

10. Bill Dreggors Park

Another place in DeLand that is on the National Register of Historic Places is the Bill Dreggors Park. It was named after William J. “Bill” Dreggors who worked on preserving the area’s history. The park is a hidden gem in DeLand that is perfect for a family-friendly outing and a great place to get out into nature.

The beautiful butterfly garden is a great place to sit and watch for butterflies. There is a themed butterfly sculpture and a butterfly bench that complete this garden. The park also has a large playground for kids, pavilions for parties, a paved loop for jogging, public restrooms, and plenty of grass for a nice picnic.

11. Naval Air Station Museum

What started out as a municipal airport later became a Naval Air Station. After years of operating as a military base, it was eventually shut down and around 50 years after the opening of the base, the museum came to be. The building that the museum is housed in, is the former Chief Master at Arms House and was restored in 1995.

The museum focuses on the history of the Naval Air Station in DeLand and has many exhibits including various military artifacts, vintage photographs, military art and the impressive Navy F-14 Tomcat. To go on a tour of the museum, get to the museum early on Wednesday or Saturday from 8am to 12pm.

If you’re someone who loves thrilling adventures, then going skydiving in DeLand might be the perfect activity. This skydiving base has been operating since 1982 teaching and enjoying this action-packed sport. They work with skydivers of all levels so whether you are experienced or a first time jumper, Skydive DeLand has experienced instructors for every step of the way. There are two training options which include a tandem jump going right into the freefall training program. The jump is from nearly 14,000 feet and you can expect to spend around 3-4 hours for the whole process.

13. Reptile Discovery Center

The Reptile Discovery Center is about 15 minutes from downtown DeLand but it is worth the drive. With over one hundred 5 star reviews this place is fun for the whole family. There, you will get to see all kinds of reptile species including lizards, alligators, tortoises and more on the outdoor exhibits. Stepping into the indoor exhibits you will see a large variety of snakes like cobras, mambas, python, rattlesnakes, and a taipan.

However perhaps the most fascinating part of this visit is seeing the venom extraction program. The center is a facility that collects venom from a wide variety of snakes and ships it around the world for making anti-venom and for use in medical research. The live program is given at 11:30am and 3:00pm Thursday through Saturday and once at 11:30 on Sunday. If you choose, there is also an option for an interactive experience with some of the snakes where you can pet or hold the snake.

14. Stay At DeLand Hotel

This 1925 boutique hotel is the oldest operating hotel in DeLand. The DeLand Hotel retains its original architecture and charm while delivering upgraded and modern room amenities. Marvel at the classic red façade, the vintage furniture, vaulted ceilings with chandeliers, and the clawfoot tubs which all give extra charm to this historic hotel. While the DeLeon Springs are located on the north side of DeLand, another fantastic option is the Blue Springs State Park south of DeLand. From world-class skydiving to family-friendly attractions, here are the best things to do in DeLand, Florida, an adorable town about 30 miles southwest of Daytona Beach and 30 minutes from Orlando.

The architecturally gorgeous  Athens Theatre  is a do-not-miss in downtown DeLand. This local, historic venue is home to Broadway-style shows, concerts, and Stetson University events. This season alone you can see Rock of Ages , Peace of Woodstock , and tribute concerts, including The Doors and John Denver .

2. DeLand Museum of Art

For art lovers, the DeLand Museum of Art is a must-see. There are actually two museums to explore, both showcasing incredible works. I was lucky to see John Mellencamp’s artwork here when it toured Florida — the only gallery in Florida to have his pieces.

3. Main Street Shopping

Shopping enthusiasts will be delighted by the boutiques on DeLand’s award-winning Main Street . From unique pet stores to music shops and literary havens, there’s something for everyone. And vinyl lovers, rejoice! DeLand has record shops (Steve’s Downtown Music and Groovy Records) that have been serving music enthusiasts for decades.

It is worth mentioning that DeLand isn’t just now jumping on the vinyl popularity. These two record shops never closed since the origination date decades ago. They are packed full of great rock & roll classics, and literally every kind of music you can think of. Merchandise also includes posters, memorabilia, and knick-knacks. I used to drive two hours from Vero Beach just to browse these unique spots.

The costumed interpreters do a great job telling about the Three Sisters’ history and how Cassadaga came to be. Most of the mediums and psychics live onsite and have gone through lengthy training and certification to become community members.

And for the adults, DeLand has some great drink options. Beer lovers should check out Persimmon Hollow Brewing Co. for their craft beer flight and enjoy the family-friendly taproom. My recs for what beer to order are the 3 Wise Guys Coffee Porter or Daytona Dirty Blonde Ale, their biggest seller.

Fun Fact: DeLand was once known as Persimmon Hollow thanks to the wild persimmons that grew there.

10. Take a Boat Tour on the St. Johns River

When it comes to outdoor activities, the St. Johns River, “Bass Fishing Capital of the World”, is a must-visit. Whether you’re into ecotourism, fishing, boating, or birdwatching, this beautiful river has it all. And don’t forget to go on a pontoon boat tour with St. Johns River Eco-Tours to experience the wildlife up close.

Tickets are around $25 for adults, $15 for children 3 to 12, and typically last an hour, though there are longer cruises.

I recommend going early, and bringing sunscreen and plenty of water. Reservations are required.

Fun Fact: The St. Johns River is 310 miles long and the longest in Florida. It is one of the only rivers that flows north, while winding its way through 12 counties.

11. Visit an Amazing Florida State Park Chock Full of Manatees

Blue Spring State Park is another great spot, especially if you’re a manatee lover or enjoy biking and picnicking. Explore the park’s acres of natural beauty and observe the gentle giants in their designated 2,600 acre refuge. There are often between 350 and 400 daily.

Walk on a handicapped-accessible boardwalk to observe them; public facilities and a snack shack are in that same area. Keep your eyes open for birds, gators, and fish of all types. The natural setting makes for stunning photo-ops.

Tubing and swimming at Blue Spring State Park. You can rent tubes inside the state park, or bring your own, 6-feet or under.

12. Overnight at the Artisan

if you’re looking for boutique accommodations, check out the historic Artisan Downtown Hotel . My favorite mural in DeLand is A Conversation over Chess, in 1929 , done in sepia. They truly bring the city to life.

14. Try Tasty Vegan Food Items, and Much More

At BakeChop, they work their magic with vegetables, so don’t miss their daily specials. I’ve enjoyed an arsenal of side dishes, vegetarian fare, and toothsome desserts from this beloved DeLand eatery. Sit outside on the cute patio weather permitting.

15. Indulge in International Eats

De la Vega offers mouthwatering Latin empanadas and plates, plus their sangria is a must-try. If you’ve never experience Latin cuisine, this will be a perfect introduction for you. Whatever you choose, pork, chicken, beef, or exotics, be sure to add beans and rice—they are flavorful beyond belief. Chef Nora’s pork with some chimichurri sauce is my fave.

Vegetarians and vegans are more than welcome here. Come for Sunday brunch from 11 AM to 2 PM where you can try all-you-can-eat tapas for $23.95 per person. Want to try something unique? Hibiscus tacos are one of De la Vega’s specialties.

And the oysters are out of this world! Other tasty contenders are the Bavarian pretzel with beer cheese dip and the beer battered fish & chips.

There are two other locations of Half Wall Beer House, Port Orange and New Smyrna.

20. Taste and Buy the Best Key Lime Products

These delicious treats are made right here in DeLand, 1842 Patterson Avenue. Pop by their outlet store for some irresistible discounts on key lime pie items, gourmet cookies, and more.

FYI : The two things I can’t leave without buying are the Key Lime Tartar Sauce and the Strawberry Key Lime Pie.

21. Visit Horseshoe Park

Take a stroll through Horseshoe Park, filled with whimsical fairies, sprites, and enchanting trinkets. Don’t forget to snap a photo with the beautiful pastel-colored wings mural created by the local muralist, Erica Group. You will see her “Wings Over X” all over town.

22. Go Shopping for Vintage Finds

Marketplace at Rivertown is a three level antique mall with 7,000+ square feet of retail shops, many vintage or antique. The inventory includes lighting, primitives, glassware, toys, collectibles, clothing, furniture, jewelry, repurposed, vintage, antique, and oodles more.

I couldn’t take more than two or three steps without wanting to buy something fantastic in my path. Prepare to go down the rabbit hole in this treasure trove.

23. Go on a Mini Art Adventure

If you are a fan of murals or art in general, you’ll go crazy for the Downtown DeLand Miniature Art Adventures. Self-guided brochures can be picked up at the West Volusia Visitor Center,116 W. New York Avenue. I’ve spotted about 15, but I think there are many more. Young kids will be stellar at this fun trail.

15 Best Things to Do in DeLand (FL)

The baking soda manufacturer, Henry Addison DeLand (1834-1908) founded this beautiful city in 1882. He also established Stetson University here, and his intention was for DeLand to become the Athens of Florida. 

That nickname has made it into the 21st century, and I don’t think it’s a bad description. Stetson University has a picture-perfect campus, just a couple of blocks north of one of Florida’s prettiest and most dynamic downtowns.

If the name Stetson sounds familiar it does come from the hats. The hatter, John B. Stetson was friends with DeLand and wintered here. He was a benefactor of the university, and built one of Florida’s finest Victorian mansions in the city.

1. Downtown DeLand

The epitome of a healthy central business district in a small town, DeLand has been held up as an example of how to get it right since the 1980s

All of the ingredients are here, from historic architecture to community events like a farmers’ market on Friday evenings. 

There are close to 70 buildings in the Downtown DeLand historic district. I love the dainty painted brick storefronts and elegant overhangs.

Along several blocks of N Woodland Boulevard are specialty boutiques, antiques stores, museums, and restaurants for a world-spanning array of cuisines.

2. Stetson Mansion

Known as The House That Hats Built, the Stetson Mansion (1886) was the winter home of John B. Stetson (1830-1906), the inventor of the cowboy hat. You could also call him the first snowbird. 

A sublime monument to the gilded age, this is the largest and most opulent residence to have been built in the state before 1900. Over the years, it’s hosted several national and international dignitaries, including European royalty.

I’m amazed by the ingenuity of this place. The Stetson Mansion was Florida’s first home with electricity, and had a call bell system, and steam heat. Among the opulent fixtures are 1,000 panes of antique glass, and 16 different parquet wood patterns. 

This is still a private residence, and can only be visited by guided tour, between November through April.

3. Stetson University

Go a few blocks north of downtown DeLand and you’ll be at Stetson University.  For me, the campus is best summed up as a New England university transplanted to Central Florida. So instead of maples and beeches there are live oaks and palms. 

You have to take a look around, either on a guided tour or at your own speed. What you’ll see is the oldest ensemble of education buildings in the state. The campus is important enough to be designated an historic district.

Among the ten key buildings is DeLand Hall (c. 1884), Florida’s oldest-surviving building still used for higher education. 

I’d suggest allowing some time for The Gillespie Museum. Dedicated to natural history, this museum has one of the most important historic mineral collections in the Southeast.

4. De León Springs State Park

DeLand is in a part of Florida with natural springs bubbling from the ground at almost every turn. One of the most beautiful is just 15 minutes from downtown. 

I do have to say that this isn’t actually the Fountain of Youth. The park was named after Ponce de León as a tourism gambit in the 1880s. 

All the same, De León Springs State Park is extraordinary, with more than 6,000 years of human habitation. The water rises at a rate of over 20 million gallons a day, at a temperature of 72° F all year. In winter manatees make their way inland to hang out in these waters.  

On a summer’s day you could cool off at the swimming hole, and hike in mysterious subtropical woods with ancient bald cypresses. You can book a pontoon boat tour, or go independent and rent a kayak or paddle boat.

5. DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts

On the weekend before Thanksgiving, one of the region’s most anticipated arts shows transforms downtown DeLand. 

First held in 1992, the DeLand Fall Festival Of The Arts features close to 200 juried artists from across the country. You can browse and purchase art in a range of mediums, from painting to ceramics, printing, glassmaking and woodwork. 

Most rewarding for me is getting to talk to these artists and finding out what inspires them. There will be plenty of food, drink, and entertainment on hand to complement the fantastic art, all paired with an award-winning downtown area.

6. Museum of Art – DeLand

This museum is operated by a not-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing world-class contemporary art to the community. 

The museum has been around since 1951 and offers rotating exhibits, educational programming, talks, artists’ workshops, and a wide array of other events. 

There are normally two concurrent exhibitions, running for about three months at a time. Some recently featured artists with international profiles are Roberto Matta, Clyde Butcher, John Mellencamp, and Sandro Chia.

One cool event happening when I was in town was a poetry competition. Writers had to produce an original work inspired by one of 40 pieces in the museum’s permanent collection.

7. The Reptile Discovery Center

As long as you don’t get the willies, this is a great place to spend a few hours out of the sun. At the Reptile Discovery Center you’ll have a rare chance to get up-close-and-personal with a diversity of snakes and lizards—in a safe environment. 

The center’s residents include some notorious and misunderstood snakes like Burmese pythons and king cobras, which are the world’s largest venomous serpents. A couple of new arrivals when I visited were a taipan and a rare white rattlesnake. 

The center features regularly scheduled live venom extraction shows, and an outdoor trail with gators, lizards, and tortoises.

8. DeLand Naval Air Station Museum

An advanced training facility during World War II, DeLand Naval Air Station operated between 1942 and 1946. 

After the war, the station reverted to its civilian aviation role, but its military history hasn’t been lost. The museum now on the site preserves this heritage. 

There’s a variety of exhibits containing equipment, photographs, uniforms, and other memorabilia. Another highlight for me was the small collection of historic aircraft. 

Most of these postdate the air station, but are fascinating all the same. You’ll see a WII-era Avenger torpedo bomber, an F-14 Tomcat (the kind made famous by Top Gun), and a H-13 Sioux MASH helicopter, built during the Korean War.

9. The Volusia County Fair and Youth Show

The Volusia County Fairgrounds are on the east side of the city and host events all year. The fair itself takes place across ten days at the start of November, and brings in people from all over Florida.

This has been a tradition since 1923, and still has agriculture at its soul. Which means a host of youth-oriented livestock competitions and demonstrations. Volusia County residents can enter a whole spectrum of categories, from horticulture to art. 

These are accompanied by midway games, rides, music, and numerous vendors. I definitely won’t say no to fair food, be it funnel cake, turkey legs, or deep-fried Reese’s cups.

10. The Athens Theatre

Looking west along Indiana Avenue, your eye will surely be caught by this palatial building, my favorite in DeLand. In a grand Italian Renaissance style, the Athens Theatre is a rare example of a preserved movie palace in Central Florida.

Designed by prolific Orlando architect Murry S. King (1870-1927), the Athens Theatre opened its doors in 1922. The fine brick and stone facade was covered over in the 1950s. Then, after withering for decades, the building closed in the 1990s.  

A long-term restoration brought the glory years back, and the venue reopened as a performing arts stage in 2009. 

On the menu now are productions by the Athens Theatre Company, a lot of concerts, live comedy, dance performances, youth workshops, and occasional movies.

11. DeLand Artisan Alley Farmers Market

Whether it’s hot and sunny or blustery and rainy, the DeLand Artisan Alley Farmers Market is open. 

Unlike most farmers markets that are only open in the morning and early afternoon, it takes place on Friday evenings from 6 until 9. That makes it the perfect place to unwind and stretch your legs after a long work week. 

The setting is a walkable backstreet in the historic downtown area, and the 80+ vendors are carefully selected. There’s local organic produce of course, as well as baked goods, salsas, spices, honey, and pickles.

On a hot summer evening the ice cream sandwich truck really hits the spot. As with all the best markets, you can enjoy some live music as you shop.

12. St. Francis Trail

One of the vast protected areas close to DeLand is the 607-square-mile Ocala National Forest. Within ten minutes of downtown you’ll find a way into this wilderness at the St. Francis River Trailhead.  

Without straying too far from the city, you’ll venture into deep woods with grand live oaks and cabbage palms. 

Walking here, I was amazed to learn that there was a busy port town on this part of the St. Johns River in the late 19th century. You would never know it today.  Most of the trail is only moderately strenuous, so it’s appropriate for most ages and levels of physical ability.

13. The Edmunds Center

Set on the scenic campus of Stetson University, The Edmunds Center is a multi-use venue holding 5,000 spectators. This arena is home court for the university’s men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams.

It’s been open since 1974 and is named after a former university president. Though the center is getting up there in years, it has undergone several recent upgrades. 

Everything, from court-side seating to the video boards, had just been improved when I went to press.

Now, as well as Stetson Hatters’ games, the center has hosted a mind-boggling array of stars in its time, from Steve Martin to Don McLean.

14. Bill Dreggors Park

DeLand has an extensive park network, offering locals and visitors a variety of free and convenient activity options. Bill Dreggors Park is named after a local man who advocated for the preservation of Florida’s history. 

Amenities include a paved walking trail, four picnic pavilions, and an impressive community-built playground. Something I adore here is the sensory butterfly garden, designed for the visually and physically impaired.

Also noteworthy is a preserved hospital building from 1920. Within are exhibits on common medical procedures in eras past, a veteran’s memorial, and a number of other cultural and historical displays.

15. Volusia County Farmers Market

It’s quite possible that central Florida has more farmers’ markets than it does farmers. I guess it’s no wonder considering the area’s nurturing climate, abundant sun, and fertile soil.

The Volusia County Farmers’ Market is the county’s largest and takes place every Wednesday from 7 AM until 2 PM.

Dating back to 1975, the market is conveniently located at the fairgrounds, and is as much a flea market as a farmers’ market.

You can find everything from fresh seasonal produce and prepared food items to arts and crafts, vintage clothing, and housewares. If you need it or want it, you’ll find it here, so swing by and take a look.

Every state has charming small towns, and Florida is no exception. While many people flock to the sunshine state to visit Orlando or Daytona Beach, DeLand, Florida sits perfectly and unassumingly in between these popular cities . If you’re looking for fun things. to do in DeLand, you’ve come to the right place!

DeLand is charming, caught somewhere in between the vintage victorian era and modern art and dining. In fact, West Volusia Tourism’s slogan is Old Florida, New Vibe . I can’t think of a better way to describe this small town and all there is to do here.

In DeLand and the surrounding West Volusia county, you’ll find adventure, art, natural wonders, hometown pride, history, wild animals , and more.

The following is my comprehensive guide to DeLand, Florida . Here you will find what to do in DeLand and the surrounding areas, why you should add this small town to your vacation, where to stay, and what to eat. For this trip, I was sponsored by West Volusia Tourism . All opinions are my own.

History and Location of DeLand, Florida

DeLand is just one community in the West Volusia County area . It is the centerpiece for most of our visit to the area, and home to Stetson University.

Orlando, Florida to DeLand , Florida is less than an hour . And Daytona to DeLand is just about 35 minutes. Close to Central Florida, it’s easily accessible by either city, yet worlds away in look and feel. Remember, this area is old Florida, United States, established in 1876.

Henry Addison DeLand first visited Persimmon Hollow (a name you’ll hear later on) establishing the town and name change, as well as DeLand Academy. The academy would then change to Stetson University after DeLand convinced his friend and hat maker, John Stetson to invest in the area.

DeLand’s main street has been voted America’s best main street . I’ll cover a lot of the main street in the sections below, but know that the area is home to breweries, art and murals, unique shopping, gourmet dining, and even a live theatre. If this isn’t enough to entice you to this charming small town, keep reading!

Keep in mind, some of these places I mention are minutes from DeLand and not directly in the downtown area. While there’s plenty to do downtown, you may need a rental car or shared transportation to visit some of the West Volusia attractions.

The DeLand, Florida area is surprisingly full of activities to keep you entertained for more than a day. In fact, I know we didn’t see and do nearly enough even in our three full days in the West Volusia area. The following are some of our highlights of the surrounding DeLand area.

Blue Spring

Blue Spring State Park is one of many of the naturally cool springs and state parks in the state of Florida. The area of Blue Spring is special as it is home to the manatees. While they do appear year-round in the springs, Manatees typically make their way to the springs in the colder winter months thanks to the stable temperature of the springs. Springs waters tend to stay right around a cool 72 degrees. The park has tracked a record 485 manatees in 2018.

Blue Spring State Park also offers picnic pavilions, camping, swimming, paddling sports, hiking, and fishing. You can also step back in time at the Thursby House, built in the late 100’s by Louis Thursby.

Blue Spring State Park is located at 2100 W. French Ave, in Orange City. It’s about 17 minutes from DeLand.

De Leon Springs

De Leon Springs State Park is another nearby park and home to De Leon Springs. Here you can also swim, paddle, fish, and take a boat tour.

The piece de resistance, however, is the Old Sugar Mill Restaurant . Located in a replica of the 1830s sugar mill, you step back in time for breakfast. Famous for making your own pancakes, each table is equipped with a steaming hot griddle and all-you-can-eat pancake mix. It is a popular attraction in the area and diners are first come first serve, so come early.

De Leon Springs State Park also claims to be home to one of the fountains of youth. Stroll the property reading the rich history that goes beyond the sugar mill. be sure to pop into the exhibit chronicling the centuries of history in this area.

De Leon Springs is located at 601 Ponce de Leon Blvd, in De Leon Springs. It is about 14 minutes north of DeLand.

Hontoon Island State Park

Located just minutes away from the heart of DeLand, Florida, Hontoon Island State Park offers visitors a wealth of outdoor activities and breathtaking natural scenery. Boaters can access the park by boat via the St. Johns River or boat ramps located at each end of the island. Nature lovers will appreciate the variety of wildlife and habitats to explore such as oak hammocks, marshes, hardwood swamps, and upland sandhills. Popular recreational activities in Hontoon Island State Park include fishing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking trails, bird watching, and picnicking. Campers can enjoy primitive camping on-site in addition to an airboat launch area. There’s something for everyone to enjoy in this unique and beautiful natural oasis near DeLand!

Skydive DeLand

One of the more surprising attractions in DeLand is Skydive DeLand . DeLand, Florida happens to be a world-renowned skydiving destination. I’m talking real skydiving here. Not the simulators you find in popular tourist areas.

Skydive DeLand offers jump packages for beginners to experienced skydivers, including tandem dives.

While I did not skydive, nor do I think I’m ever going to be brave enough to do that, I still enjoyed our visit here. You can grab a drink or some quick bites to eat at the Perfect Spot Restaurant located at Skydive DeLand and watch the planes take off with brave skydivers. It is quite awe-inspiring to watch the skydivers return to earth.

Plus, you can get a picture of the Wings of the West here. (see below)

Even if you haven’t heard of DeLand, many residents of the Orlando area know Cassadaga . The spiritualist camp is home to many psychics and mediums , as well as a grand hotel, restaurant, and spiritualist bookstore. Here you can get a reading from dozens of resident psychics located in the shops or the welcome center. Church services occur on Sunday mornings.

The Cassadaga Hotel is a full-service hotel with a psychic center, healing, and wellness events. Built in 1927, it is a charming and majestic space. Be sure to drop into the lobby for the list of events.

Stroll the nearby Fairy Garden for fairy houses and small trinket memorials scattered along the path.

Barberville Pioneer Settlement

Many areas offer pioneer settlements and historic homes, and DeLand’s nearby Barberville Pioneer Settlement blows them all out of the water.

Barberville Pioneer Settlement is a collection of nearly twenty historic buildings and demonstration areas, with living history happening around the property. We were lucky enough to visit during their “Playing on the Proches” event, treating us to live music all around the settlement. We also witnessed live, authentic demonstrations of blacksmithing, woodworking, candle making, loom weaving and so much more.

Barberville puts on many community events throughout the year at the living history museum. Be sure to check out their calendar.

By far, this is one of the best permanent pioneer settlements I’ve visited. I highly recommend.

Barberville Pioneer Settlement is at 1776 Lightfoot Lane in Barberville, approximately 15 miles from downtown DeLand.

Stetson University and Stetson Mansion

DeLand, Florida is home to Stetson University . The school integrates well within the city center. The Stetson Mansion is Florida’s first luxury estate built in 1886 is one of the grandest homes built in Florida before the 20th century. Stetson made Deland his winter home. The Victorian mansion is one of the first private homes to be wired for electricity by Thomas Edison.

Also on the National Register of Historic Places, this home has been lovingly restored in 2005. Originally home to John B. Stetson, creator of the hat of the same name, it had undergone serious neglect in the 20th century.

If you love grand Victorian-era homes, put this on your must-list to visit. Even better, plan a trip during the holidays when the home is glittering from hat to boot in luxurious Christmas decor.

The Stetson Mansion is located at 1031 Camphor Ln in DeLand.

Lyonia Environmental Center and Scrub Jay Habitat

To get a sense of the “Real Florida,” visit the Lyonia Environmental Center in Deltona. The center has a number of interactive and informative exhibits as well as a Scrub Jay habitat and nature walk .

Learn about the various ecosystems that make up this area of Florida, as well as the Florida Scrub Jay. The Florida Scrub Jay is the only bird species truly native to the state of Florida. It is also listed as threatened on the endangered species list and therefore places like the Lyonia Environmental Center are important in preserving the species’ habitat. The nature trail here is short and you can easily visit within an hour.

Art in West Volusia

West Volusia is home to an amazing fine arts scene, much of which is centered in the city of DeLand. The city is home to the Museum of Art – DeLand, which in turn has worked on some of the following projects.

Wings of the West

The Wings of the West are various wings scattered throughout West Volusia county, by Erica Group . The larger-than-life wings are perfect for those Instagram-worthy photos, showing off an important aspect of the area.

• Swallow-Tailed Kit Wings at Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge
• Fairy Wings in Cassadaga’s Fairy Trail

• Scrub Jay Wings at Lyonia Environmental Center

We were lucky enough to get images on every wings mural. Because of their locations, we visited places we may have otherwise missed.

Historic Murals

In downtown DeLand, historic murals depict different eras through the town’s history and settlement. While some are easy to find on the main streets, take a look at the Historic Mural and Plaque walk to find more about the town’s history.

Downtown DeLand’s Miniature Art Adventure

Be sure to stop by the West Volusia visitor’s center and pick up a self-guided tour of the miniature art adventure. The Museum of Art in DeLand along with the city has curated resident and visiting artists to paint small art pieces throughout the downtown area. Without the brochure, I would have missed many of these. These smaller pieces are a true delight in discovering and certainly took us down alleyways to discover additional hidden gems we wouldn’t have found otherwise.

While not art, per se, there is an art to playing chess. tucked away near the courthouse, the Chess Park offers chess tables for anyone’s enjoyment. I fell in love with the tree canopy in this area and it reminded me of the Chess area in Central Park.

DeLand Artisan Alley Farmers Market

If you’re looking for a great way to experience the art, sights and flavors of DeLand, Florida, then look no further than the DeLand Artisan Alley Farmers market! This weekly event features an abundance of local produce, fresh artisanal products, live music and entertainment, and much more. With over 20 vendors offering up unique artisan wares, a variety of fruits, vegetables, homemade treats, and other unique items, this artisan market has something for everyone. Take a leisurely stroll through the alley as you take in all the sights and sounds. After you’ve shopped until you drop (or your bag is full!), enjoy live performances from some of the area’s most talented artists at Cafe Davinci, an outdoor concert venue. So make sure to head down to DeLand Artisan Alley Farmers market on Friday evenings.

There is no shortage of dining in DeLand. We enjoyed a lot of local restaurants while in town and still didn’t sample everything. The delightful part of downtown DeLand, Florida is everything is independently owned. You won’t find any chain restaurants here. For a full list of dining, visit here .

Our favorites included the following:

• Bake Chop Artisan Kitchen – Watch as the chefs prepare your handcrafted sandwiches and burgers. We ended up here for dessert and did a full round of pastry samples!
• Chica’s Cuban Cafe – This cute Cuban cafe is located at the Artisan. Superb Cuban food and sandwiches.
• The Half Wall – The Half Wall may be known for its 76 craft beers on tap, but their burgers are to die for. If you want a good, messy, juicy, loaded burger, this is the place. And don’t forget to get the cheese curds.
• The Table – Located on the lower level, The Table is artisan dining with an open modern/mid-century decor. Sunday brunch is a must-do, but make reservations! All-you-can-eat breakfast and lunch items such as crab cake benedict, french toast casserole, chicken and waffles, chilaquiles, and more. Of course, be sure to add on the bottomless mimosas. Everything was small plates, allowing you to try as much of any dish that you desired. I can’t wait to go back.

Other dining we enjoyed in the DeLand area

• All you can eat pancakes at the Old Sugar Mill at DeLeon Springs
• Riverwalk Pizzeria near Blue Springs State Park
• Sinatra’s Italian Restaurant at Hotel Cassadaga – loaded pasta dishes made from scratch, delicious!

Breweries, Cocktails, & Coffee Shops

The CoolCraft beverage Trail in West Volusia is what originally drew me to the area. I knew that it would be the perfect place for a grown-up girls’ weekend. See, I’m not much of a wine drinker. I prefer good craft coffee and local craft breweries. Knowing that DeLand was home to one of my favorite craft brews, I figured we were on to the perfect destination to sample some of the coolest crafts around.

West Volusia’s Cool Craft Trail is always growing. Be sure to check out CoolCraftTrail.com for the most up-to-date list. New for 2022, is the CoolCraft Summer beverage competition. Participants can create one specialty drink, alcoholic or non-alcoholic that features summer and West Volusia-inspired flair! The competition starts on June 14 and runs through September 5th, 2022

Persimmon Hollow Brewing Company

Persimmon Hollow , named for the original name of DeLand, Florida, was one of my favorite brews even before I visited their premier location. Now sold throughout Florida, Persimmon Hollow started in the Artisan Alley of downtown DeLand. They have a large, open warehouse feel. The beers have roots steeped in the West Volusia area. My favorite is Beach Hippie.

Hyderhead Brewery

Recently I learned that I have a Scottish background. When I stepped into Hyderhead Brewery and found it rife with Scottish artifacts, tartans, images, and more, I was already in love. Hyderhead is a family establishment that traces its true Scottish roots back to moonshine escapades in the Highlights. We enjoyed the Maide-Leisg a year-round pumpkin pale ale.

The Abbey Bar and Odd Elixir Meadworks

Before visiting The Abbey Bar, I had no legitimate knowledge of mead. While the Abbey Bar is home to craft beers in downtown DeLand, their partnership with Odd Elixir Meadworks makes them a stand out. Mead is the oldest fermented beverage in history, made from honey. Odd Elixir uses local honey in their meads. It is light, flavorful, and extraordinarily refreshing. In fact, I enjoyed it so much, we went back to have more on our second day in town.

Trilogy Coffee

This charming coffee house specializes in small-batch coffee, roasting their beans daily. They offer traditional coffee and pour-overs as well as craft coffees and beverages.

Boston Coffee House

The Boston CoffeeHouse welcomes you into what appears to be a historic Boston Colonial brick establishment. Of course, it’s located in downtown DeLand instead of Bean Town, but it does offer great coffee bean drinks, along with a full menu and Boston-style desserts.

Hemingway’s 442

Hemingway’s 442 takes craft to a new level. Located in the DeLand Hotel, Hemingway’s has a speakeasy feel with precise and top shelf crafted cocktails. The atmosphere here made it such a great place that we would not have discovered if it weren’t for Visit West Volusia.

The Artisan Lounge

While not a brewery of coffee or beer, the Artisan Lounge has a fantastic hotel lounge atmosphere I couldn’t leave it off the list. We were lucky enough to visit during Pride Month and had a choice of Pride-themed cocktails to choose from. We couldn’t resist the rainbow sangria in all its beautiful and fruity glory.

Blue Springs Brewery

Located in the Riverwalk Pizzeria, this full-scale brewery has a variety of brews on tap crafted by a professional brewer. Their daily specials are reasonably priced with large servings.

The girls’ trip wouldn’t be complete unless we did a little shopping. Mainstreet DeLand Association, as it is with dining, is filled with unique independently owned boutiques and shops. Again, I have to go back in order to visit them all. Discovering all these unique independently owned shops was one of the best things about our trip. A few of our favorites on the main street include:

• Sidecar – A vintage shop with a full bar. It’s the best of both worlds!
• Pretty Little Things – Handmade, vintage, unique, and utterly charming. the owner is friendly as well!
• The Museum of Art Museum Store
• The Muse Book Shop
• The Nest – Another place you can shop and drink. The store is filled with artistic gifts and incredible sangria!
• The Table Pantry and Provisions – The upstairs area of The Table restaurant mentioned above.

Outside of the Deland downtown area, make a special trip to these places:

• Kermit’s Key West – THE place to get Kermit’s Key Lime supplies. This is the factory location of the famed Kermit’s Key Lime Pies (there just isn’t enough space in Key West). Get all your key lime flavored goods here, such as sauces, candies, pies, and their famous, chocolate-dipped key lime pie on a stick!
• Cassadaga Bookstore – Books and gifts on every conceivable spiritual and religion you can imagine.

Festivals, Events & Theater in DeLand

I love a small town that’s filled with events. When the locals have fun, so do the visitors.

We were lucky enough to visit the weekly Artisan Alley Market Walk , located throughout the Artisan Alley of downtown DeLand. Here we shopped at places like The Nest, but also local vendors selling creative wares such as candles, crystals, clothing, pottery, and more.

Additional events in DeLand include the Taste of DeLand in January, a Mardi Gras Dog Parade, the first Saturday Music Jams at the Pioneer Settlement, and several holiday events and Christmas decor starting in November.

The Athens Theatre, located in downtown DeLand, puts on quality shows year-round. This beautiful historic building not only does live theater and concerts, but also special showings fo movies. Check out their season here.

Accommodations

During our visit to DeLand, Florida, we stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites. Our stay was comfortable and an easy drive to all our locations.

The Hampton Inn & Suites is just what you’d expect from a Hilton brand hotel. We had keyless entry, sealed and cleaned rooms , and plenty of space to spread out and relax after a full day of adventures.

My favorite part of any hotel stay is a free breakfast and the Hampton Inn & Suites in DeLand, Florida did not disappoint. First, coffee is available all day. The breakfast buffet included waffles, fresh fruit, baked goods, cereals hot eggs, fresh juice, and more. It’s definitely more than a traditional grab-and-go continental breakfast.

7 Things to do in DeLand: a Charming Downtown

It’s picturesque and an Award-Winning Florida Main Street containing more than 60 historic buildings. Named the Best Downtown in the Nation in 2017, there’s a reason why these 7 things to do in DeLand are sure not enough!

There are plenty of things to do in downtown DeLand, Florida! For starters, check out the historic Main Street. Stroll down the brick-lined sidewalks and take in the quaint shops and restaurants.

Then, you can head over to the DeLand House Museum to learn about the area’s rich history. Also, a very popular stop is Stetson University, one of the oldest colleges in Florida.

DeLand has all the charm, great dining, and artsy vibes. And believe it or not, there are plenty of geocaches for some super fun Geocaching adventures .

Most of the shops and businesses are located right within the heart of the Downtown at Woodland Blvd and you’ll also see some amazing mural art all through Downtown.

DeLand is also home to Florida’s First Private University, Stetson University, which I’ve read holds many Historic Landmarks .

At just a short drive from Orlando, Deland is worth a visit.

Although we’ve visited Downtown DeLand more than a couple of times, it’s usually been a half-day visit or less. However, don’t let this fool you!

This is plenty of time to explore and enjoy some of DeLand’s historic charm.

DeLand is a beautiful city in and the county seat of Volusia County, Florida State, United States.

After the 2020 census, DeLand had a population of approximately 37,351. Also commonly referred to as The Athens of Florida, DeLand was incorporated in 1876 and has become a popular tourist destination.

DeLand is popular for being the location of Florida’s oldest college, Stetson University. The city is characterized by red-brick buildings, spectacular oaks, and Greco-Roman columns that give off a similar ambiance to a quaint New England college town.

The Athens Theatre was designed in 1921 by architect Murray S. King in an Italian renaissance-inspired style.

Henry DeLand, DeLand city’s founder, initially planned the city as The Athens of Florida before it was changed, so the Theatre was named after the initial plan.

This Theatre was active throughout the 20th century, offering spectators exciting performances, community events, film showings, and more.

The Athens Theatre was thoroughly refurbished in 1994 by the MainStreet DeLand Association. Now, you can visit for some classic movies and theatrical presentations.

Bill Dreggors Park is named after William J. “Bill” Dreggors, Jr.-a historian and preservationist.

There is a well-paved loop trail of 7/16-mile, which serves as a path for joggers and walkers, and a Freedom Playground, a paradise for little children to have fun.

Bill Dreggors Park features four picnic pavilions for rentals for any special events and massive birthday packages made available by the Parks and Recreation Department of DeLand.

The Park also features a 1920 memorial Hospital Building with an extensive collection of museum exhibits relating to the cultural and economic history of the city.
