1.  Walk with dinosaurs at Changi Jurassic Mile

As you bike down Changi Airport Connector with the fam, keep an eye out for the city’s largest permanent outdoor display of life-sized dinosaurs. Changi Jurassic Mile is home to over 20 different prehistoric, colossal creatures including the tyrannosaurus rex, velociraptors, and parasaurolophus – the tallest standing at about five-metres high. While you explore the grounds, look out for the baby dinos hatching from their massive eggs, and try to spot all nine species along the one-kilometre cycling and jogging path.

Since it’s suitable for both kids and adults, you’ll want to bring your entire family for a memorable weekend out. Choose from four different tracks: Dragon, Jungle, Kupu Kupu, and Expedition. While some have unexpected twists and turns, others have straightforward gentle slopes. If your child is under six years of age, they’re sure to have a memorable experience by riding in tandem with you. No matter which trail you pick to coast down, you’ll enjoy the cool sea breeze in your hair. 

3.  Play among nature at Jurong Lake Gardens

The stunning lotus-shaped building is an iconic landmark in the Singapore skyline and also a place where art, science, culture and technology come together. Take your kids on an artistic adventure at the museum's permanent exhibition, Future World – Where Art Meets Science. Together with digital art installations by teamLab, a trip here will light up your kids’ creative bulb where they can watch their 2D crayon creation transform into animations, create thrones out of colour-changing blocks, and go down an interactive slide.

5.  Swing and slide at Marine Cove Playground

The main highlight of course is the picturesque Hindhede Quarry which is located at the end of the park. 

7.  Sing Under the Sea at SEA Aquarium

Sing  Under the Sea as you ogle at over over 100,000 marina animals at S.E.A. Aquarium through a brand-new underwater experience complete with refreshed educational content and immersive audio-visual programmes. This complements the aquarium's recent facelift which features specially designed light effects and fascinating soundscapes. 

Don't miss: The Sea of Tiki  makes for a fun, themed experience for the whole family – matching Hawaiian shirts are optional. Follow five legendary tikis along an enlightening trail and befriend the tropics’ most fascinating marine animals – keep your eyes peeled for a majestic volcano and the adorable lei-wearing (Hawaiian flower garland) manta ray mascots. 8.  Take on the slides at Admiralty Park

Take a wild ride down any one of the 26 unique slides at three main play areas: Junior Play, Adventure Play, and Family Terracing Play. The young and the young-at-heart can slide down The Curved Roller Slide, a 34-metre-long outdoor slide lined with black tubes similar to that of a conveyor belt for easy sliding. Besides the slides, there’s an inclusive playground fitted with a wheelchair swing and merry-go-round to support play between children with and without needs.

9.  Run riot at Jewel's Canopy Park

Jewel Changi Airport’s wonderland  makes a great indoor playground for both kids and kidults. Burn your energy by weaving through various mazes, bouncing on nets, sliding down an art sculpture, and admiring the stunning views of the HSBC Rain Vortex and Shiseido Forest Valley from above a glass bridge. Alternatively, take a breather at a misty garden, pose for a selfie with the many animal topiaries, and stop and smell the roses at a floral fantasia.

Don't miss: While you're at Jewel, make the most of your family day out with an Amazing Race at Changi Experience Studio ($138 for one child and one adult) where you can learn the workings of managing an airport. Taking place from March 13 to 21, the half-day programme invites families to take part in many fun activities to score points, complete challenges and win prizes.

10.  Test your smarts at Science Centre Singapore

An institute built for the cultivation of everything scientific (yeah, science!), this kid-friendly institution features regular exhibitions that promote the physical, life, applied, technology, and industry sciences. The centre also lays claim to Singapore’s only domed cinema, the Omni-Theatre, which is equipped with state-of-the-art IMAX technology. It also has a  40-centimetre mega-telescope which gives  little astronomers a closer view of the starry skies at the Science Centre Observatory.

Don't miss: Kickstarting World Water Day , which falls on March 22, the science centre teams up with the Public Utilities Board (PUB) for a slew of activities to raise awareness about water conservation. Let your little Einsteins immerse themselves in the shape-shifting wonders of the water cycle in the Day as a Droplet Gallery Hunt, or try their hand at the various Wet & Wild activity booths.

11.  Scream out loud at Universal Studios Singapore

This one’s a no-brainer. Beat the summer boredom at Universal Studios Singapore. With so many rides and attractions across the park’s seven themed zones, teens can get their heart rates pumping on thrilling rides like the Battlestar Galactica: Human vs Cyclone. Don’t miss meet and greet opportunities with characters such as the Minions and the Madagascar squad. 

Don't miss: Frolic in the tropics with Tropical Thrills, where you can meet the king of fun at Aloha Talk with King Kahula, and catch your favourite characters including the Minions, and the Sesame Street crew in their best tropical island ensemble alongside stilt-walkers and hula dancers. 

12.  Break a sweat at Singapore Sports Hub

Where else can kids burn off their energies with fitness-related activities besides the  Singapore Sports Hub ? Children aged six to 12 can pick up a new sport in the hub’s Learn-to-Play programme – the schedule changes monthly but expect basketball, kin-ball, baseball, inline skating and everything else kids love. For some splashin' good time, head to  Splash N Surf for a water play area. Otherwise, catch some waves on the Stingray, and learn to half-pipe surf while having a go at bodyboarding and skimboarding.

Don't miss:  Active children can sign up for Sports Hub Multi-Activity Camp , happening from March 15 to 19. This five-day camp keeps your children agile with a variety of sports including soccer, frisbee, floorball, rugby, and dodgeball.

13.  Beat the heat at Snow City

While natural snow is unlikely to fall in tropical Singapore, the city makes up for the lack of sub-zero temperatures with faux snow. Spanning at 3,000 square-metres, the three-storey-high winter wonderland has a 60-metre-long snow slope, an ice gallery, a bumper car arena, and photo-taking memories to capture those magical moments. Keeping the energy high, the centre's latest addition is a Winter Shooting Arena where teens can have an icy paintball shoot-out. Younger children can play in the family-friendly Snow Chamber where there's an Inuit home, a snow playground, and a treehouse adventure playground. There's also a bumper car arena for some high-octane fun.

14.  Hang out on suspended nets at Airzone

They say everywhere can be a playground – that's certainly the case for Airzone, the world's first indoor suspended net playground that welcomes both the young ones – and the not too young as well. Occupying the atrium space between different floors in City Square Mall, be prepared to explore the multiple play areas where you can dive in a ball pit, crawl through a maze, climb to the top and try out the slides or just hang out on the suspended nets. 

15.  Get botanical with Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden

Singapore is home to the first garden in Asia dedicated to children. With the aim of promoting awareness and education, the Jacob Ballas Childen's garden is divided into several spaces for play and exploration – there's a farm, orchard, and forest with stream and ponds. The active tykes can burn some energy at the trampolines, treehouses, and flying fox zipline. For a cool down, head to the sheltered outdoor café nearby with all-day brunch items for the whole family.

16.  Be one with nature at Dairy Farm Nature Park

New to the hiking game? Start with the 63-hectare Dairy Farm Nature Park. The main trail is paved, so you don't have to rough it out Bear Grylls-style with the little ones. Make your way to the Wallace Education Centre for hands-on activities and exhibits that tell the story of Dairy Farm’s changing landscapes. Keep a lookout for the striking red and yellow heliconias as well as the monkeys, pangolins, and butterflies along the way.  For a chance to spot rare species of dragonflies and the critically endangered birds known as Little Grebe, h ead towards the scenic Singapore Quarry at the park’s south-western end.

17.  Dabble in art at National Gallery Singapore

As part of this year’s edition of Small Big Dreamers, the showcase titled  An Artist’s Tropical Landscape  features safe and engaging interactive activity stations for the little artists, inspired by local painter Georgette Chen’s artwork Tropical Fruits. The kids can get creative drawing fruits, and engage in sensorial play in the curious audio area where they can listen to the sounds various fruits might make. More imaginative fun awaits at the Keppel Centre for Art Education’s imaginative Art Playscape where there are various interactive kinetic zones.

18.  Engage the senses at Khatib Clubhouse

A colossal playground for the young and the young-at-heart, " Singapore’s First Smart Clubhouse"  boasts the city's largest multi-installation indoor hub, and first indoor Player versus Player (PvP) airsoft arena. The little ones will love the Peranakan-inspired indoor playground complete with a climbing slide tunnel, a sports pitch, a foam ball shooting arena, an interactive trampoline, a ball pit, and a ninja course – all designed to engage the senses. Older kids can get then check out Adventure HQ which features a 233-metre-long roll glider, a 14-metre-long slide, a 165-metre-long artificial cave, a 15-metre cloud climb, and a two-tiered, 16-obstacle indoor challenge rope course.

19.  Farm hop at Kranji Countryside

Escape to the countryside with the fam. At Kranji Countryside, kids can watch goats getting milked and even feed,  erm, other kids at Hay Dairies, see vegetables being harvested and grown at Quan Fa Organic Farm, get schooled on organic produce at Bollywood Veggies, and more. 20.  Get wet and wild at HydroDash

Live out your ultimate Wipeout dream at Singapore's very first floating aqua park. Both kids and kidults can climb, slide, leap and bounce at the massive inflatable playground and  obstacle course – think a giant bouncy castle  in the sea, just off Sentosa's Palawan Beach. To maximise the fun for everyone, t he water park is split into four zones  with varying difficulty levels – Level 1 is specially designed for kids aged five to eight (every one child has to be accompanied by one adult), and Levels 2, 3 and 4 are for those aged nine and above.

21.  Climb like Spider-Man at The Rock School

Let your little ones channel their inner Spider-Man with The Rock School's climbing gym in Bedok. The colourful space is specially tailored for kids between the ages of four and fourteen, with kid-friendly handholds and programme resources, as well as gentler wall profiles. Rain or shine, your mini Spidey can scale the indoor bouldering room and the four-lane sheltered top-rope wall in a safe and comfortable environment .

22.  Be part of the Cartoon Network squad at Play! by Kinderplay

Over at Changi Airport Terminal 3, the kiddos can have their fun at the Cartoon Network-themed Play! indoor playground. The star of the show is a Powerpuff Girls interactive game that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to transform players into one of its adorable hero characters. There are also Ben 10 play spaces including ball pits and slides. Parents, don't worry – the playground is padded out to the fullest, with soft-fall floors.

23.  Dive into a 'snowball' pit at Amazonia

After a major facelift in 2019, Amazonia is back with an arctic theme that's oh-so-cool (see what we did there?). Kids can go down the city's highest indoor wave slide, jump around on the netted trampoline, and dive into the snowball pit (no actual snow included). There's also a massive 3,000-square-feet play-gym which features kid-friendly challenges for the active tykes. Babies, on the other hand, can enjoy themselves at the soft-play area which is separated from the larger children's area, and features a mini slide, ball pit, interactive play panels, and swings.

24.  Splash around at Wild Wild Wet

From rapid flume rides to four-storey slides and wave pools, there's no shortage of fun at this water park in the East. The little ones can take it easy in the meandering river or splash around in Yippie!, a shallow sloshing area. The Yakult Professor’s Playground – with its slides, ladders, water cannons and fountains – will entertain older kids for hours. 

25.  Rock and roll at HiRoller Indoor Skating Rink

Whether you're jumping on the Tik Tok trend-wagon, or revisiting a popular pastime of the, um, past, HiRoller Indoor Skating Rink in Pasir Ris offers state-of-the-art experiences on both inline and roller skates – think disco lighting and thumping music. It's also a great spot to introduce the kids to both inline and roller skates. You won't even have to worry about your kids falling flat on their faces – there are inline skating athletes and certified instructors to guide them through the glide.

26.  Gear up for a NERF Action Xperience

A huge hit with the kids and kidults since the late 80s, the iconic Nerf brand opens the 18,000-square-feet dedicated Nerf entertainment centre  that encourages active learning and team bonding.  Get your heart pumping at multiple indoor themed activity zones that test your agility and creativity through active play, teamwork and more. And if all that shooting and dodging flying pellets got you working up an appetite, refuel at the food and beverage areas. 27.  Bounce around at Kiztopia

The massive  indoor playground  at Marina Square is an interactive play space for children 12 and below. Kiztopia offers an environment where kids can play and learn valuable skills as well. Besides fun times at the  bouncy castle and trampoline arena, let them try the grown-up world for size and fake it – hopefully – until they make it by grocery shopping, cooking, driving and more at the role playrooms and even bring home the goodies they have made in the kitchen.

28.  Overcome the obstacles of Forest Adventure

Encourage the kids to aim high at this kid-friendly obstacle course. Designed for those between five to nine years old, your mini adrenaline junkies can go ham on 22 crossings including zip-lines, ladders, swings, nets, and tunnels. Parents, don’t sweat – as safety is a priority, briefings are conducted once your kids are strapped in the harness prior to taking on the challenge.

29.  Mingle with animals at SPCA Singapore

30.  Take a wild walk at Singapore Zoo

Spread over 26-hectares of lush nature reserve land, the zoo is home to more than 2,500 animals, with over 300 species, from across the globe. Unlike traditional caged zoos, it’s one of the world’s first 'open concept' zoos that have animals in individually landscaped enclosures and zones. Here, you can have breakfast with the orangutans (currently suspended), say hello to the friendly Asian elephants, and see the rare white tiger in the flesh.

While you’re in the area, visit the manatees, crocodiles, flamingos, and pandas next door at the river-themed wildlife park River Safari. Come face-to-face with over 30 animals from the rainforest on a boat ride aptly named Amazon River Quest. Then in the evening, squeeze some time for the Night Safari, the world’s first night zoo. Aspiring figure skaters, ice hockey players and rookies can learn the basics of gliding and turning. There are also adorable ice skating aids in the form of penguins and seals for the extra confidence boost.

34.  Shop for a teddy bear at The Better Toy Store

The best part about The Better Toy Store is that it stocks toys for kids as young as three months all the way to teens – plus it even has a modest selection of collectibles and limited edition teddy bears for adults. That’s right, no one is too old for toys. For toddlers, it is good to have toys that engage and build, rather than fragment, a child’s attention span. With that in mind, this chain stocks a huge array of toys selected for their play value, functional design, and impact on the environment.

35.  Kick about at The Cage

Let your mini Mo Salah dribble and pass at Singapore's "first indoor football stadium". The Cage allows football enthusiasts to bend it like Beckham on six 5-a-side pitches – rain or shine. The space is perfect for small practices, friendly matches, and free-flow footies with your aspiring footballers. Open on a regular, the venue has energetic music pumping through its speakers to keep the ball rolling.  

36.  Delight in more than one treat at Café Melba

• Buona Vista

At some point, you have to take your kids out for a meal, so why not order comforting treats at this Aussie-inspired restaurant? The young ’uns can dig into stacks of pancakes with fresh berries and maple syrup, or French toast with honey at this cosy nook in the west. Kids eat free with every main course ordered on Mondays. But first: let them jump around the bouncy castle from 3pm, or let their creative juices flow at the arts and crafts corner from 5pm to 8pm.

37.  Have a fun family meal at SandBank

• Restaurants

Sandbank is big on family-fun, and it shows – the casual diner has a 15-metre plunge pool that spans the front of the outlet, with a third of the pool dedicated to children and the rest to adults. With a drinks menu that features a wide array of draught beers, wines and cocktails, parents can unwind and sip on their beverage of choice while the little ones have their fun. If the kids are feeling peckish, Sandbank offers a kids' menu, kids-friendly utensils and baby high chairs – they even have a baby changing station for ultimate convenience.

38.  Jump around at Bounce Singapore

There isn’t a moment of stillness at Bounce Singapore, where you can jump off walls and fly through the air. This addition to the trampoline scene has three areas designed for different interests and various levels of difficulty, so young tots, older teens, adults and even fitness enthusiasts are catered for. Got a pre-schooler in the house? Specifically designed for kids aged three to five, KinderGym is equipped with a safe, multi-sensory environment to give them their jumping fix.

39.  Get super soaked at Far East Organization Children's Garden

Surrounded by the lush greens of Gardens by the Bay, this outdoor playground has one mission in mind: to get everybody drenched. There are water tunnels, stepping springs and various jets your pint-sized terrors – or your mischievous side – can use to hose everyone else down. Even toddlers can get in on the aquatic action, with a safe play zone you’ll feel comfortable letting them roam around in.

40.  Fly a kite at Marina Barrage

Marina Barrage attracts couples and families all year round thanks to its breathtaking 360-degree view of the bay area. Pack a picnic basket and a kite for some family fun. Don't have one? Browse through  the cavalcade of colourful creations at the shop on the grounds.  Then, help your kid unleash his or her kite into the air and let it sail in the bay's gusty winds.

41.  Sit in for a storytelling session at the library

Elevate your tiny bookworms' reading experience by bringing them to engaging storytelling sessions regularly held at public libraries in Singapore, except for library@chinatown. Children of various age groups, as well as parents, are invited to journey through the exciting adventures of  Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Jack and the Beanstalk  and more.

42.  Build sandcastles at Siloso Beach

• Attractions

Siloso Beach is a hive of activity with numerous beach clubs  and an array of watersports options that simply exudes good summer vibes. And you can enjoy some fun under the sun without spending a dime here. Help your little beach bums with sunscreen application and watch them unleash their imagination in sandcastle building, splash around in the sea (with your guidance, of course) and play a friendly game of beach volleyball.

43.  Reconnect with nature at Punggol Waterway Park

This peaceful park offers four unique themes with something in-store for visitors of all ages. The Nature Cove features a picturesque view of the waterway, with areas for families to spend lazy Sundays on the grass. At the Recreation Zone, little ones can let loose with activities like water play and sand play, while the rest of the family gets a workout at the fitness corner.

44.  Put on your goggles for Splash @ Kidz Amaze

Splish, splash, splosh with the little ones at this indoor water wonderland. And by little ones, we also mean that babies under 12 months get to enjoy free entry. The water playground stretches out to 23,000 square feet, with five slides and eight play decks that are all interconnected by climbing structures. Big buckets of water topple at random over a few areas, so expect most children to cluster around that splash pad to get dunked. For those with tots aged 18 to 36 months, head over to a separate wading area where water jets gently spray streams at you.

45.  Enjoy the bizzare world of Haw Par Villa

This little theme park of horrors is both terrifying and impressive at the same time.  Multi-coloured statues and tableaux depict scenes from Chinese history and mythology in bright, gaudy colours, making it look more menacing than they should. 46.  Go fishing at ORTO

Escape the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle at this tranquil sanctuary for nature lovers. Doubling as a 24-hour prawning paradise, this scenic multi-recreational park invites you to embrace the thrill of the grill when you barbecue your fresh catch of prawns and yabbies.  The little ones can also try their hand at longkang fishing or prawning. If you lack the patience for prawning, burn your energy with other activities like futsal and paintball as well.

47.  Ride a horse at Gallop Stable

• Bukit Timah

Saddle up – horse riding isn’t just for trust fund babies or polo players. Learning to ride at   Gallop Stables   starts from as little as $65 (per 30-minute session). The little ones can enjoy   a 20-minute pony ride   ($45) which is suitable for  three years and up. Alternatively, opt  to go on a supervised riding   for   an hour   ($85) on the   Fairways Green Track or Fairways Sand Ring.

48.  Skydive indoors at iFly

Be blown away, or in this case, up, by this wind tunnel which gives the thrilling sensation of skydiving without having to jump out of a plane. Under the watchful eye of iFly's team of pros, kids can have a ball pretending to be Superman.

49.  Baby goes swimming with Aquaducks

The earlier the kids learn to  swim , the better. AquaDucks is Singapore’s pioneer infant swimming school, with programmes adapted from a mix of European, USA, and Australian teaching techniques. The school prides itself on being child-centric, providing a safe and fun environment to build your child’s confidence in the water. Parent-child interaction is emphasised and you’re encouraged to be the personal coach, under the supervision of swimming instructors. The programme is divided into six levels to encourage children to reach the next milestone.

50.  Check out childhood memorabilia at MINT Museum of Toys

This venue is temporarily closed.

Parents , relive your childhood and bask in nostalgia while introducing your kids to  time-honoured  characters like Tintin and Popeye at t his private museum showcasing a collection of over 50,000 pieces of vintage toys. With rare, one-of-a-kind pieces from more than 40 countries – some of which date back to the mid-1800s – it’s easy to get caught up in past in this five-story shrine to toys.

ULTIMATE GUIDE TO SINGAPORE’S FAMILY ATTRACTIONS

If you’ve been wondering what the top family attractions are in Singapore, keep reading! There are so many fun things for kids to do in Singapore from the historic such as the Battle Box Museum to the cultural ( Buddha Tooth Relic temple ) and adventurous, both indoor and outdoor – Sentosa Island . 

This is handy due to the temperatures, which range from 25C (77F) and 31C (87F). You can plan your days around outdoor activities in the morning and afternoon and spend the middle of the day in air conditioning.

There are also a lot of night activities in Singapore for kids. While the city topped the most expensive cities in the world list for five years, it is one of the most family-friendly destinations in Asia. There are loads of family attractions in Singapore that are free such as checking out the Supertree Grove and Far East Children’s garden at Gardens by the Bay to walking across the Helix Bridge and visiting the Merlion.

It’s also clean, green, organised, the main language spoken is English and it’s one of the safe places to travel with kids. On top of that, Singapore is one of the best cities to visit because it has a fantastic public transport system . The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system (subway) is so efficient with frequent services as well as a lot of stations so there’s bound to be one – or even two – where you want to go.

That said, Singapore is such a compact place that’s it’s also very walkable, which is why I’ve organised the following list of Singapore family attractions by area with a mix of indoor and outdoor activities as well as some free things to do with toddlers to teens to help you plan your Singapore travel itinerary and stay on budget.

I try to update this article as often as possible but due to the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, you should always use the more information links I’ve provided to double check opening times and availability.

Changi/Pasir Ris

Changi Airport notched up the title of best airport for 8 years in a row (only being beaten in 2021 by Hamad International in Doha and Tokyo Haneda). One of the primary family attractions has been the Jewel shopping centre, which opened in 2019.

It has become one of the most popular Singapore tourist activities. So it’s not surprising that more people are choosing to visit and stay in the Changi area. If you’re not though, it’s a bit of a hike from the city centre by public transport although using the Grab ride app can be quite economical, especially for families.

Changi Beach

This is one of the best beaches in Singapore. The water is calm and clear and the beach itself stretches for 3.3km. If you get to the Changi Point end, there’s a 2.2km boardwalk that provides a great view of the coast. There are bikes to hire, and benches and shelters for picnics. There’s also an onsite bistro for food or the Changi Village Hawker Centre is a quick 7-minute drive away.

Changi Village Hawker Centre

If you’re staying in or visiting the Changi area, this is the place to go for authentic street food such as satay bee hoon or nasi lemak.

Jewel shopping centre

This is one of the most popular attractions in Singapore – even the locals agree with many of them travelling out to Changi Airport just to shop and hang out at Jewel . It’s definitely one of the cool places to visit in Singapore. There are a stack of free and paid activities for kids such as the Rain Vortex, Shiseido Forest Valley and Canopy Park .

This makes it on to my “cheap things to do in Singapore” list and, if you’re a family that’s into all things nature, this is the place for you. This island is only a 10-minute bumboat ride from Changi Point Ferry Terminal. It has a really rich and diverse flora and fauna as well as some local monkeys and is one of the last examples of an authentic kampong (traditional village) in Singapore. Don’t forget plenty of water, sunscreen and insect repellent (sandflies can be bad).

Splash @ Kidz Amaze

What I like about this water playground is that it’s all indoors. It features a three-storey high tower with slides and a splash bucket at the top. There is a toddler play zone that is a bit quieter for younger kids. At this one, there weren’t any specific things to do with infants, but the Kidz Amaze at Toa Payoh has a specially designed infant and toddler zone.

Wild Wild Wet @ Downtown East

While it’s not as big as the water park at Adventure Cove in Sentosa, it’s also not as expensive and it still has a good selection of activities such as a wave pool, slides and a lazy river and a large water playground as well as rides for younger and older kids.

Bugis/Kampong Glam

Malay heritage centre.

A visit here will give you a good insight into the history of the Malay culture in Singapore. It’s compulsory to remove your shoes before entering.

Sultan Mosque

The golden domes of this mosque are hard to miss. It’s a beautiful building and will evoke memories of “Jasmine” for your kids. There is a strict dress code.

If you’re visiting Singapore for the first time, this is a must-visit! It’s one of the most popular Singapore tourist sights. It has it all – culture, history, shopping, entertainment, fun and food – including a stack of family attractions! This is definitely the place to go in Singapore if you have limited time. 

Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum

This is one of “the” sites to visit in Singapore.  While only built in 2007, the temple gets its name from the left canine tooth of Buddha, which was retrieved from his funeral pyre and is displayed on the grounds. Admission is free as are two-hour tours conducted by volunteer guides. As with all temples, there is a dress code.

Chinatown Heritage Centre

This is one of the good places in Singapore to visit with kids who have an interest in history. The centre is housed in three restored shophouses on Pagoda St that provide an insight into life in Chinatown in the 1950s. It’s been on my “Singapore places of interest” list for some time and I finally got to go last trip. When I was there, they had some great free activities they were doing with children.

Chinatown Complex

This is reportedly the biggest hawker centre and probably the best place to go in Singapore to try the local food – from chilli crab to frog porridge and dim sum. Even if your kids are not fans of chilli or spice, you’ll find something here to whet their appetites – and the prices are VERY cheap!

I would probably suggest though that you make this your last stop of the day for dinner when it’s not so hot. We went in the middle of the day and, with no aircon, it was pretty steamy. However, some stalls are not open at night so check before you go.

Chinatown Food Street

This is a section of Smith Street that was renovated especially to cater to the tourism market. It features a range of dining options from shophouse restaurants to street hawker stalls. There’s an overhead glass shelter for rain protection and the area is permanently closed to traffic.

East Inspirations

If you’d like your children to experience an authentic Chinese tea party, this antique/vintage shop in Chinatown is the place to go. Mr Cheong and his family will share their knowledge of Pu-er tea and give you the opportunity to taste tea that has been aged for more than 20 years. Each session lasts about 1.5 hours and there are four per day.

Food Playground

Of all the fun things for children to make, this would have to be one of the best – cooking their own Singaporean food! And the best part about it is getting to eat it afterwards. Different dishes are prepared and cooked on different days – you’ll find complete menus on their website. There are no age restrictions but probably better for children aged 10 and up.

Littered with Books

Take a little time out of your Chinatown exploration and escape the heat as you browse the shelves in this two-storey, renovated shophouse. The indie bookstore has a good range of children’s and young adult fiction.

Maxwell Food Centre

After seeing the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, visit this hawker centre to go to Tian Tian, one of the must do’s in Singapore for Hainanese chicken rice. This is one of my favourite dishes – it appears quite simple and plain but a lot of work goes in to producing a quality product.

I’ve eaten chicken rice from a lot of vendors and this is one of the best and cheapest at $S5. Like all hawker centres, there’s no aircon so you might go at the end of the day but beware they often sell out then close up.

Mei Heong Yuen

This is one the kids are sure to love – icy cold desserts! Close to the Chinese Heritage Centre, you could pop in here to try the hugely popular snow ice, which comes in a stack of flavours such as banana chocolate and mango strawberry.

NUS Baba House

You probably can’t imagine anything worse than taking very young children through this historic house – both for it and them! However, the exterior alone is stunning so I suggest you swing by and grab some Insta-worthy pics of you and the fam in front of it (even more so if you have some Insta-obsessed teens). The interior might have to wait for another day (trip) but, if your kids are a bit older, it could be worth using it as a prompt for a discussion about the Peranakan Chinese culture.

Chinatown Street Market

The kids will love this market. It has a stack of souvenirs and trinkets. It’s also home to The TinTin Shop if your kids are fans.

Sri Mariamman Temple

This is oldest Hindu temple in Singapore, built in 1827. The grand tower entrance is 6 tiers of elaborate and ornate decoration, which continues inside. Remember to remove your shoes before entering.

Thian Hock Keng

Also known as the Tianfu Temple, this is one of the oldest Chinese temples in Singapore, built in 1839. Beautifully decorated with detailed sculptures and carvings of dragons and phoenixes, it’s interesting to note that not one nail was used in the original building.

Tong Heng Confectionary

I’m extremely partial to egg tarts and this is one of the best places to find them in Singapore. The pastry is buttery and the custard filling has just the right amount of wobble. However, if egg tarts are not your thing, Tong Heng has a variety of other traditional dishes – both sweet and savoury – you can try such as mooncakes and pork buns.

Eastern Singapore

The locals will tell you there’s a lot of rivalry between those who live on the western side of the city and those who live on the east as to which side is better. Personally, I think they’re both great so if you have time, see both!

East Coast Lagoon Food Village

The hawker centre is popular for its satay and barbecued seafood, chili crab, satay, mee goreng and popiah – and the fact that they come with an ocean view.

Many of the stalls open from 4pm and close late so you could easily eat here after a visit to East Coast Park, which has a huge amount of kids’ activities.

East Coast Park

This park is huge and has cycle and walking paths, bicycle and rollerblade hire stalls, play towers, a water play area, a skate park, and barbecue and camping areas. It also gives you a great view of the A380s landing at Changi.

Eventually the Park Connector will link all of th trails and parks around the island.

Forest Adventure

I love treetop adventure parks and this is one of the most popular Singapore kids’ activities. There’s a kids’ course for those aged 5 to 9 with 2 zip lines and 22 crossings; a grand course with 3 giant zip lines and 44 obstacles; and a junior course for the in-betweeners. There are height requirements for each one and adult supervision is required for some ages. It’s a good idea to book before you go as there are limits on the number of participants.

HarbourFront

Aside from panoramic views of Singapore from this 105-metre peak, you’ll get to visit one of the 7 Merlions of Singapore (you could start a competition with your kids to find the other 6).

There is a cafe called Arbora and the more upmarket Dusk Restaurant, which, as its name suggests, is the place to be as the sun goes down to catch the changing view.

Take a walk along the 274m-long Henderson Waves bridge that connects Mt Faber and Telok Blangah Hill Park and ring the Bell of Happiness to be blessed with happiness, peace and harmony. There’s also a Wishing Bell wall where your kids can hang bells in the hope their wishes will come true.

Singapore Cable Car

This is where to go in Singapore if you want great views. There are two lines – one to Mt Faber and the other to Sentosa Island (with four different stations). Both routes offer spectacular views of Singapore. You can get a range of different packages, some include tickets to the various family attractions on Sentosa Island.

VivoCity shopping centre

This centre has a reputation for being the most kid-friendly in Singapore. It has a great free kids’ playground on level 2 that might come in handy if you’re spending time shopping (the centre does have some good deals to encourage tourists).

There are two areas – each aimed at a different age group – with slides, swings, ladders and ropes and even a wet play area. It also has a rooftop water feature that has paid activities.

Little India

This is one of the most vibrant areas in Singapore – and one of the oldest. There is so much history and culture on display that it’s easy to get lost in just wandering the streets. Today it’s also a fascinating blend of old and new as heritage temples and spice and silk stores trade in streets popping with contemporary street art.

Central Sikh Temple

This stunning white marble temple is a perfect contrast to the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, which is one of the most colourful. Built to mark the 518th birthday of Guru Nanak, the first Sikh guru, it houses the Granth Sahih, or holy book.

Mustafa Centre

The kids will love this shopping centre ! It’s packed full of all sorts of paraphernala – souvenirs, electronics etc. If it doesn’t have what low-priced item you’re looking for, you probably can’t get it anywhere! This 24-hour mall goes up and down and round about forever. You should go just to see it!

Warning though – it’s very tight for space so keep an eye on your kids, they could get lost in there and also hold on to your personal belongings. There have been pickpockets.

Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple

This is one of the most stunning, colourful temples I’ve seen and a “must visit” place in Singapore. It’s also one of the oldest Hindu temples in Singapore and is dedicated to the goddess and destroyer of evil, Sri Veeramakaliamman. Remember to take your shoes off before entering.

Tekka Centre

If you’re looking for somewhere to eat while you’re in Little India, the hawker centre on the first floor has stalls selling Indian and Chinese vegetarian meals as well as North Indian and Malay food. It serves up favourites such as biryani (spiced rice with slow-cooked meats), thosai, and murtabak.

The rest of the centre is jam-packed full of stores selling everything you could ever want and then some. Great fun to browse with the kids.

Marina Bay is one of the best family attractions in Singapore. There are so many famous places here. It’s definitely a must-see.

ArtScience Museum

This is one of the top things to do with kids in Singapore with kids and one of the city’s excellent museums . They’ll be fascinated by the exhibitions, which focus on the future and Disney. Your ticket allows you same day re-entry so you could spend most of the day here.

The museum’s mission is to explore the intersection of art, science, culture and technology and the innovation this creates.

Far East Organisation Children’s Garden

This is one of the most popular family attractions in Singapore – and it’s not hard to see why. There’s a range of activities for different age groups with both wet and dry play areas. The 130m Adventure Trail, designed for kids aged 6 to 12, has 14 different obstacles. It includes 2-storey tube slides as well as rope and balance beam gear.

This, combined with the Tree Houses and suspension bridge, is guaranteed to put your kids through their paces. The toddler play area is right in front of the cafe so you can get your caffeine fix while you watch your little ones play. When it’s time to cool off, the younger kids aged 1 to 5 have the Fish Fountain while the older ones have free reign of the rest. All of this makes it one of the fun places in Singapore.

Gardens by the Bay

This would have to be one of the top 5 attractions in Singapore for kids – and everyone else. The whole complex is pretty amazing and definitely should be on your “must do” Singapore list. The first time we visited, we only did the free activities. The Supertrees are amazing – I don’t think I’ll ever be bored with them.

Since then, we’ve been inside the Floral Fantasy , the Cloud Forest and the conservatories. Next trip, I plan to do the OCBC Skyway. I strongly recommend paying for the shuttle service at $S3 for a two-way ride from Bayfront Plaza to the Flower Dome. It runs at 10-minute intervals every day from 9am–9pm with the last ride at 8.45pm. It’s worth it when you’ve been walking around the gardens for most of the day.

The Garden Rhapsody Light and Sound Show

One of my favourite kids’ activities in Singapore, there’s something magical about lying below the Supertrees and watching this spectacular show. And it really does need to be viewed while lying down so make sure to take a scarf or jacket to lie on. It generally is crowded but there’s really no need to get there super early as there’s loads of space.

Helix Bridge

If you’re going to or from the Singapore Flyer and the ArtScience Museum/Gardens by the Bay, walk across the Helix Bridge . You’ll get a great view of the city skyline and sights such as the famous Singapore landmark, the Merlion.

This forms part of an 11.7km promenade route that will eventually link Gardens by the Bay and the Singapore Sports Hub and is the longest pedestrian bridge in Singapore.

It’s so called because it resembles the double helix structure of the DNA molecule symbolising “life and continuity, renewal and growth”.

Singapore Flyer

This is one of those fun things to do with kids in Singapore. It provides spectacular views of Singapore though probably not as amazing as the Singapore Cable Car.

Spectra Light and Water Show

Just slightly eclipsed by Garden Rhapsody, this show is still one of the 10 best things to see in Singapore. The 15-minute show features dancing fountain jets and laser visuals projected onto the water accompanied by an impressive soundtrack.

You can watch it from almost anywhere on the waterfront near Marina Bay Sands hotel, however, you can also take a cruise specifically to see it or book a table at one of these Marina Bay Sands eateries: Le Noir (L1-84, Bay Level), Dallas Cafe & Bar (L1-85, Bay Level), JustIN Flavours of Asia (L1-83, Bay Level).

SuperPark Singapore

This is one very large indoor activity park with 20 “activity stations” divided into 3 zones – the Adventure Area for younger kids, the Game Arena for team sports and the Freestyle Hall for the die-hards! There’s no sitting around here.

Northern Singapore

This area is home to some of Singapore’s top 10 family attractions. It is a bit of a hike from the city centre but using Grab can be an economical option with a family.

Former Ford Factory

This houses the National Archives of Singapore exhibition titled Surviving the Japanese Occupation: War and its Legacies and where British forces surrendered to the Imperial Japanese Army on 15 February, 1942.

There are special activity guides available for children, differentiated by age.

The free guided tours have 20 places available each day (except for public holidays).

Night Safari

Night Safari, River Safari and Singapore Zoo are all in the same place so it’s easy to combine them though doing all three in one day would be a big undertaking. The zoo closes at 6pm and the River Wonder at 7pm so you could easily transition to the Night Safari.

This award-winning, 35ha wildlife park has almost 900 animals in 7 geographical areas, which you can cover in a 40-minute tram ride (with English commentary). This gives you a good overview of what’s where and will help you decide exactly what to do.

After the ride through the park, find a seat in the amphitheatre to watch the Creatures of the Night show and do some walking trails where you can get up close to the animals.

River Wonder s

This is a very popular family attraction. While the name suggests that boats might be the main form of travel, they’re not. You still walk around this park but it does include a boat ride on the reservoir (no height restrictions). The park is designed around the Rivers of the World.

The 10-minute Amazon River Quest, which costs an additional $S5 for adults and $S3 for kids, is really a theme park ride and children have to be a minimum height of of 1.06m.

Singapore Zoo

Hands down one of the best things to do with kids in Singapore. This 28ha zoo is an open, meaning there are no cages. Instead, the animals – some 2530 animals of them – are housed in landscaped enclosures surrounded by hidden moats.

There are tigers, penguins, polar bears and Komodo dragons. As with most popular family attractions, it’s a good idea if you can get there early. When I was there, you could do breakfast with the orangutans but I understand it’s been cancelled due to Covid.

The kids can feed the animals and there are four different 20-minute shows to catch. Unfortunately Rainforest Kidzworld – a large water play area that has all the fountains and slides your kids – and you – could need to stay cool has been suspended.

There’s also a hop-on, hop-off tram that patrols the park, which we used to get our bearings and work out our plan. Make sure you pack lots of water and sunscreen.

Splat Paint House

Budding artists can get their paint on at Splat Paint House. Participants get a quick info session and then they’re let loose on the canvas. This is a pop-up though so the address could change.

Orchard Road has to be one of the best places to visit in Singapore for shopping so if you’d like to make the most of it, plan your day around some kid-friendly activities so that it’s fun for everyone! 

On level 3 of the Great World City shopping centre, this indoor playground features a four-storey high jumbo wave slide and is a fun family attraction. Amazonia is one of the best things to do with babies. It has a self-contained space with a soft play area with a mini-slide, interactive play panels and swings, and a toddler-friendly ball pit.

For older kids, there’s a separate Snowball ball pit, which is much bigger and deepr and has vacuum ball tubes for interactive play. They’ll also enjoy the interactive AI Gaming Zone and trampoline basketball court. There’s a bistro on site so this would be a great place to break for lunch to get out of the sun and into the aircon.

Bounce Singapore

In the Cathay Cineleisure mall, this is the place to take the kids to get rid of all that pent-up energy. Let them bounce around to their hearts’ content while you put your feet up with a coffee. There are 28 trampolines as well as tumble tracks. There’s also an adventure challenge course, X-Park, for older kids. Each session lasts 50 mins. Multi-visit passes are available.

Cathay Cineplex

This movie theatre is in the same building as Bounce. With 12 screens, they have all of the latest releases covered. There are student rates available on some days so make sure your kids pack their student ID cards.

Lockdown Escape

In the Orchard Gateway complex, Lockdown Escape will challenge your kids’ minds rather than their bodies as they try to figure out how to get out of the room in less than 60 minutes. There are 4 different themed rooms such as Bearcraft: Dream World and Bears of Justice. There are also virtual reality escape rooms.

Food Republic

If you want to sit out the midday heat and grab some lunch in air-conditioning, head to Food Republic at 313@Somerset, 313 Orchard Rd. While the prices tend to be a bit higher than most hawker centres , it probably reflects the rents in big shopping centres.

Ice Cream Stands

As you walk along Orchard Rd between Ion Orchard shopping centre and the Takashimaya department store, you’ll notice little ice cream carts with brightly coloured umbrellas. Their main fare is the traditional Singaporean ice cream sandwich. Often in the West, ice cream sandwiches are made with some sort of chocolate-covered biscuit or wafer but in Singapore, they’re actually made with bread sweetened with pandan flavour – in all colours of the rainbow – though some do offer wafers!

The ice cream comes in the usual flavours such as vanilla, chocolate and mint but you’ll also find durian, based on the popular but very divisive fruit known as the smelliest in the world. I haven’t yet tried it but I can attest to the fact that it smells (in fact, it’s often banned from hotel rooms!).

Newton Food Centre

If you’re in Orchard Rd and want to try some truly authentic hawker food , head to Newton Food Centre, about an 18-minute walk or 5-minute Grab ride away. Featured in the Hollywood hit “Crazy Rich Asians”, this is one of Singapore’s most popular centers, with about 100 hawker stalls.

Get your fill here with a huge range of dishes on offer from seafood to laksa and shaved ice (a kid favourite).

Singapore Botanic Gardens

These gardens are some distance past the shopping precinct so if your kids are fading a little, it’s probably best to jump on a bus and ride a couple of stops. That’s the beauty of buying a travel pass or EZI Link card .

You could spend an entire day in these gardens, if not several. However, your kids will love checking out the koi in Swan Lake as well as playing in the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden – all places to visit in Singapore for free. On the weekend, this is one of the most popular places in Singapore as people turn out in droves to have picnics and wander through the gardens.

When visiting places in Singapore, it’s easy to see a lot by walking. This is one of the best areas to see on foot. I suggest starting with a river cruise then on to Fort Canning Park. Your walk then is downhill to the National Museum 5 minutes away and on to the toy museum in 12 minutes.

Battlebox Museum

Take a 30-minute guided tour and then explore this underground bunker to your heart’s content. The Battlebox was built 9m inside Fort Canning Hill in 1936 as a former World War II British underground command centre in the heart of Singapore.

The Malaya Command, the army that defended Malaya and Singapore in WWII, was headquartered here and it was also the site of the British decision to surrender Singapore to the Japanese on 15 February, 1942.

The restored underground command centre reveals the history behind that decision through a range of exhibits and artefacts.

Fort Canning Park

This is one of the best places in Singapore for history buffs, however, your kids are sure to enjoy the park too. There’s a playground opposite the Fort Canning MRT that features a variety of slides built into the hillside as well as swings, climbing nets and see-saws. If your lot are more adventurous and head higher up, you’ll find the Forbidden Spring. Here there’s a small wading pool for kids to run around in.

Mint Museum of Toys

One of the more unusual things to do with kids in Singapore is this museum full of vintage and collectable toys – 5 storeys of them organised by four themes: Outerspace, Characters, Childhood Favourites and Collectables. There are more than 50,000 toys from the 1840s to the 1970s, which were collected from more than 40 countries by collector and enthusiast Mr Chang Yang Fa.

National Museum of Singapore

This museum has a range of permanent galleries with activities and displays designed to keep your children fascinated such as the History Gallery, which has a large wooden ship as well as a variety of multi-sensory experiences.

Singapore River Bumboat Cruise

This is great fun for kids! And a must-do for any trip to Singapore. The bumboats, also known as tongkangs or sea-going barges, will give you a very different perspective of the historical area of Clarke Quay, Boat Quay and Marina Bay. They also provide a huge number of photo ops as you pass places such as the Art Science Museum, the Singapore Flyer, Marina Bay Sands Hotel and Merlion Park.

Doing the 40-minute ride late in the afternoon or early evening also gives you the opportunity to see the sunset and the night lights. There are also more expensive cruises that allow you a very special view of the Spectra Laser and Light show when it’s operating again.

This is hands-down one of the best things to do with kids in Singapore. Sentosa is home to some of Singapore’s top family attractions and is one of the top 10 things to do in Singapore for many people.

The Fun Pass is a good option if you plan to do a lot in Sentosa . You buy tokens based on how many attractions you want to see. These can also be used to buy food and beverages and can be topped up at the various ticketing counters. If you pay extra, your pass can include entry to Universal Studios.

There’s a fantastic transport system on Sentosa with free bus and beach shuttles that run around the island to and from the various cable car and Sentosa express stations.

Adventure Cove Water Park

If you want to keep your kids busy all day, this is the place. It has rides and slides along with Rainbow Reef, which has 20,000 tropical fish. You can even have a close encounter with the rays at Ray Bay between 11am and 3pm for an extra $S18 for adults and $S16 for children, who must be at least 5 years old and 107cm. Then there’s Adventure River, which takes you through a jungle, a grotto and an underwater tunnel. Skip the line Adventure Express passes cost $S15.

There are height restrictions for the slides with a minimum at 107cm and children under 122cm must be accompanied by an adult. However, there’s a wet maze that doesn’t have any height restrictions as well as Seahorse Hideaway, which has wading pool with water fountains for toddlers.

You can also hire a cabana, which includes locker hire and some other perks. Prices vary according to where they are. Cabanas at Bluwater Bay cost $S108 for 10am-1pm or 2pm-5pm or $S166 for the whole day.

There are three man-made beaches at Sentosa: Palawan, Siloso and Tanjong, all of which are open daily until 10pm. Before Covid, they were all open access but now you need to book a timeslot on the weekends either 8am-1pm or 2pm-7pm.

Cost: all of the beaches are free but many activities are not

Getting there: For all of the beaches take the beach shuttle from Beach Station (accessible for either Sentosa Express or public bus) to the beach you want

Palawan is probably best for families because the activities here are geared more towards children. It has the suspension bridge that takes you to continental Asia’s southernmost point.

Siloso is great for older children who like a bit of action but be warned, it’s also the busiest. The main activities here are Mega Adventure Park, iFly Singapore, water jetpacking at Ola Beach Club and bungee jumping at AJ Hacketts.

Tanjong is the most peaceful beach although it’s also home to Tanjong Beach Club where the hip and trendy go. Most of the activities here are aimed at adults.

Dolphin Island

If you want to interact with dolphins here, it will come at a cost. There are a range of “experiences” from the Dolphin Discovery where you get into the water with Indo-Pacific Bottlenose dolphins to the Dolphin Encounter where you’re out of the water.

Fort Siloso

This will interest any kids who are into history. This fort was part of Singapore’s defences during WWII and the museum has a collection of memorabilia

Fort Siloso Skywalk

The skywalk is on the way to Fort Siloso and gives you the opportunity to walk among the treetops. It’s 11 storeys high and 181m long.

GoGreen Cycle

If your kids have a lot of energy, put it to good use and hire the GoGreen rental bikes. You can cycle all around Sentosa with the cycling map. You’ll find them at the Segway® Eco Adventure counter at Beach Station and at Segway Eco Adventure at Siloso Beach.

If your kids would like something a little more unique, try the Segways. You can either do a 30-minute trip exploring Palawan and Siloso beaches or a quick 800m Fun Ride.

HeadRock VR

Try 8 extreme attractions virtually such as standing on the edge of a high-rise building, dodging crazed zombies or travelling into the depths of a jungle. Younger kids will love the interactive media indoor playground called Hello My Dino!

It’s time for a family challenge! This floating water park gives you the chance to climb, leap, slide and bounce through an obstacle course and cool off at the same time.

Ifly Singapore

This is definitely my preferred way to experience parachuting – in a massive indoor wind tunnel. Kids must be at least 7 years old. Make sure you’re here an hour before your scheduled “jump” for pre-flight training. 

Madame Tussauds Singapore

Now’s your chance to get a selfie with Cristiano Ronaldo or Lady Gaga! There’s also a Marvel Universe 4D Cinema and a VR Racing Experience.

Magical Shores

This light and sound show transforms Siloso Beach into a kaleidoscope of colour and music at dusk. If you’re staying on Sentosa or have the time to stay later, this is definitely a must-see.

Mega Adventure Park

The kids will be exhausted after they try the 36-obstacle treetop rides of MegaClimb or take flight on the 450m MegaZip. There’s also MegaBounce, a bungee trampoline, and MegaJump, a parachute simulator.

You can let the kids loose in this indoor centre and watch them climb around 17 play sections with obstacle courses that feature three giant nests 7.5m off the ground. There are also two huge slides for those with tired legs.

Sentosa 4D Adventureland

Choose from four 4D experiences here, which last about 15 to 20 minutes, including one taken from “Journey 2” – the movie starring the Rock.

Sentosa Nature Discovery

This nature trail has interactive exhibits, sculptures and a lookout point, which give you a chance to catch the endangered Magpie Robin or a variety of insect-eating plants, migratory birds and butterflies. The Geology Gallery tells the story of the formation of Singapore and Sentosa. One of the interesting things is that Sentosa is like the main island of Hawaii – it contains eight different habitats including coastal rainforests, rocky seashores and wetlands.

Singapore Cable Car Sky network

Make your visit to Sentosa extra special by taking the cable car all the way to Faber Peak. There are a stack of entertainment and dining options there as well as some pretty spectacular views of Singapore. There are six stops on Sentosa, which give you access to just about everywhere when combined with the free buses.

Skyhelix Sentosa

If you don’t get a chance to take the kids on the Singapore Flyer, then you should not miss these open-air gondolas, which rotate as they go up to 79m. You’ll get fantastic views to the Keppel Bay area and the Southern Islands.

Skyline Luge Sentosa

This luge is great because you control the speed, going as fast or as slow as you like. Children must be 6 years and over and taller than 110cm to ride on their own. Consider getting the Skyride-Luge ticket so you can take the chairlift to the top and then luge down. It’s a quick trip but is great fun. Helmets are a must so if you don’t want to share, take some hotel shower caps with you.

Skypark Sentosa by AJ Hackett’s

Your older teenagers (or perhaps you) will love this! They can bungee jump from the 50m Skypark Sentosa Bungy tower or take the Giant Swing that’ll hurtle them towards the beach at 120km/h. Your less adventurous and younger kids can walk along Skybridge, a 40m walkway with see-through sections.

S.E.A. (South East Asia) Aquarium

One of the most popular family attractions in Singapore tourist, this aquarium has more than 100,000 marine animals including sharks, clownfish, rays and seahorses. The kids can also go to the touch pool where they can get hands-on with sea stars and cucumbers.

Southernmost Point of Continental Asia

Walk along the suspension bridge at Palawan Beach to this tiny islet and you can say you’ve been to the southernmost tip of Asia. Two viewing towers give you an uninterrupted view of the South China Sea.

Trickeye @ Southside

A lot of fun for the whole family, you use an augmented reality app to interact with the exhibits in the Trickeye Zones. If you have teens who like to post to their Instagram accounts, they’ll love the Rainbow Garden.

Universal Studios Singapore

While this theme park is much smaller to its United States’ counterpart, it’s still very crowded with queues of up to two hours common on weekends. The best strategy is to save this for a weekday (not school holidays though) or get there early or later at night to avoid the crowds. If you have to go on a weekend, buy an express pass to skip the line.

There’s the usual rollercoasters and rides such as Revenge of the Mummy in 7 different zones with names such as Ancient Egypt, Sci-Fi City and New York. While there are height restrictions on many rides, some specially cater for children from 80cm such as the Madagascar boat ride. The kids can meet and greet their favourite characters on the street and there are shows such as Elmo’s TVTime and the Shrek 4-D Adventure – perfect for taking a break and resting your legs.

Rides will be closed down if there’s any rain, which is common in Singapore, but they do provide pass-outs so you could leave and return later.

Western Singapore

Jurong bird park.

This is a fantastic park to visit especially if your kids are fascinated with birds. They have some impressive species such as flamingoes and the Philippines eagle, which likes to nab monkeys. In the Wings of Asia section, you can even get up close and personal by walking among them. There are two shows – the Kings of the Skies and High Flyers, which are a about 20 minutes long. Just keep in mind though that shows can be cancelled if there’s rain. The park also includes both dry and wet play areas so don’t forget to take along swimwear. There’s an unlimited hop-on, hop-off tram you can ride to save little legs.

Jurong Lake Gardens

These 90ha gardens are the third and newest of the national gardens and include Lakeside Garden, the Chinese and Japanese Gardens, and Garden Promenade. It’s a nature lover’s paradise with aquatic plants and dragonflies as well as squirrels, long-tail macaques and smooth-coated otters.

The gardens have an abundance of things for kids: 2.3-hectare Forest Ramble, a huge nature-themed play space with 13 different installations from zip lines, slides and swings to suspended bridges, obstacle courses and miniature trampolines in the shape of lily pads.

There’s also a play area that resembles a coastal shore, with low sandy dunes and shallow water for the kids to play in and the sensory zones of the Therapeutic Garden are designed especially for children with disabilities, who can also visit the Butterfly Maze.

Haw Par Villa

This Asian cultural park – also known as Tiger Balm Gardens (it was built by the founders of Tiger Balm) – is one of the Singapore tourist spots that has a very chequered history and sparks controversy about its suitability for kids. Full of sculptures and dioramas that represent various myths and legends, it includes an area called the 10 Courts of Hell, which are gruesomely graphic or educational depending on your own context. 

Singapore Discovery Centre

As the name suggests, this is all about discovering Singapore – its history and its people. There are a number of permanent exhibits as well as a 4D simulator ride in which visitors can “join” the defence forces and take on invaders and the iWERKS theatre, which shows 2D and 3D movies on a 5-storey high screen.

Singapore Science Centre

Kids get to find out more about all sorts of science activities as well as watch shows s about fire tornadoes, chemistry and the solar system. There are permanent exhibitions that teach about climate change and 3D printing.

Given that Singapore is also known as the “little red spot” for its heat, it’s probably not surprising that it is home to a 3000sqm “snow city”. The snow is a little sparse on the ground. It has a no photography policy to encourage visitors to pay for a venue pic. Entrance includes rental of a jacket and boots but insulated pants and gloves come at an extra cost. Socks can be bought.

There’s one thing for certain – you’ll never be at a loss for things to do in Singapore with kids! And many of them are free. When planning your trip , try to sit out the midday heat in airconditioning and make sure you pack swimwear for the many water play activities. Palawan Beach is located between Siloso and Tanjong. It is a popular choice with families because of two popular ‘family-oriented’ attractions located along the northern tip of the Beach: Port of Lost Wonder and Animal and Bird Encounters . 

Port of Lost Wonder (POLW) is situated alongside Palawan Beach.  You should check it out if you have small children. It consists of water slides, fountains and tons of pools. You will also find food vendors in case you want to have a snack with your family. It’s free to access Palawan Beach but you do have to pay to use the facilities at Port of Lost Wonders.

Siloso and Tanjong are also nice strips of sand. You can play beach volleyball on these beaches. Tanjong tends to be the quietest of the three because it is the farthest from Beach Station.

Singapore With Kids – Our Singapore Destination Guide

If you ask traveling families, where is a truly GREAT destination for traveling with kids,  Singapore will nearly always be on the list.  This compact city-state is easy to great around,  has many fantastic kid-friendly facilities, and due to its small size traveling times are short.  The main drawback to visiting Singapore with kids for long periods is that Singapore can be quite expensive and it is hard to find cheap options.  That is why we have rated it low for variation in budgets.  We hope our tips and information can make your Singapore family holidays go smoothly.

What Is The Best Time To Visit Singapore?

There really is no “best” season to visit Singapore.  Singapore is a year-round destination but it can hot and humid all year round.  If you are traveling to Singapore with kids, keep in mind that it is located very close to the equator.  Heat and sun exposure is a concern in Singapore.  Planning activities and visiting highlights in Singapore around the heat of the day and air-conditioning is a real thing.

Although Singapore doesn’t have a typical “wet” and “dry” season, generally dry season is considered February through August.  However, don’t expect it you will escape showers completely.  Singapore experiences showers even in the typical dry season and the humidity is relatively high all year.

When Should I Avoid Visiting Singapore?

Again, there isn’t really a time to necessarily avoid Singapore.  Monsoon season in Singapore is November through the end of January.

If air quality is a concern, avoid May through August.  Agricultural fires in Sumatra cause smokey and hazy conditions during these months.  However, depending on the direction of the wind, not every day is like this.  If you have respiratory issues either avoid Singapore during these months or wear a mask while visiting.

Christmas and Lunar New Year are peak travel times in Singapore.  There are crowds and accommodation prices are inflated.  Singapore can be an expensive place to travel, so if you are on a budget avoid peak holiday times.

Singapore Festivals And Events To Plan Around

January – Lunar New Year day is a public holiday celebrated on the 1st.  Chinese New Year is celebrated sometime between January and February each year. The exact dates coincide with the Chinese Lunar calendar.

January in Singapore also see’s Singapore Art week, and the Singapore Fringe Festival.

February – The Chingay Parade is a street parade that takes place yearly in February (can also take place in January depending on the year).  It coincides with the Chinese New Year and celebrates the birthdays of the Chinese deities.  Expect floats, festivities, and celebrations!

April – The Singapore Film Festival is held yearly in April.  It is known as one of the most prestigious film festivals in all of Asia.  It is also the countries longest-running independent cultural event.  Over 200 international films are screened along with other seminars and festivities.

May – The most important holiday for Buddhists in Singapore happens in May.  Vesak Day celebrates the birth and enlightenment of Buddha.  Vesak is a more subdued celebration than other holidays in Singapore and includes a vegetarian food festival, singing, and talks, and the temples.

July – The Great Singapore Sale happens annually from May through July.  This is the biggest shopping event in Singapore.  Retailers offer deep discounts and there are many hosted shopping events.

August –    National Day is held annually on August 9th which includes the iconic National Day Parade.  National Day, which celebrates Singapore’s independence, takes place at the Marina Bay.  It is marked by celebrations and an impressive fireworks display.

September – Hari Raya Puasa or Eid Ul Fitrm, which marks the end of Ramadan takes place annually in September or October. Eid Ul Fitrm is the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.  The Malay community in Singapore celebrates Hari Raya Puasa with singing, dancing, celebration, and elaborate feasts.

October – Deepavali (festival of lights) is the most significant holiday for Hindus in Singapore.  It takes place in either October or November.  Celebrated in the Little India district of Singapore, Deepavali celebrates the triumph of light over darkness.  Little India is decorated in colored lights, flowers, and traditional decorations.

December – Christmas is a widely celebrated public holiday in Singapore.  The Christmas season in Singapore is much like it is anywhere else in the world.  Christmas festivities usually begin in early December and last up until Christmas Day.

Why Enjoy A Singapore Family Vacation

A Singapore Family Vacation makes perfect sense if you are looking for a fun-filled, action-packed kid-friendly holiday.

We love Singapore due to its cultural diversity – where else in the world can you expose children to Malay, Arab, Chinese and Indian cultures all in one trip?  It is also easy for children to understand Singapore’s cultural diversity due to seeing many different cultures side by side.

Singapore is also extremely modern, easy to get around the city.  We chose to travel by the clean and airconditioned Metro (MRT) for much of the time,  while there are also many taxis as well as Uber and Grab.  English is widely spoken in Singapore.  There is always someone nearby to help.  This makes travel in Singapore less stressful than many other places in Asia.

In addition to being a modern city, Singapore is also future thinking and there are many examples that will blow your mind!  The Marina Bay Sands (which my son described as the upside-down boat) is a jaw-dropping site, and the Gardens by the Bay and Super Trees of Singapore are not only a great bucket list item to tick off but also extremely educational.  Oh, and did I mention fun? Make sure you don’t miss the free water playground at Gardens by the Bay!

Gardens by the Bay Gardens by the Bay

If you're looking for a taste of nature without the trek, Gardens by the Bay is your urban jungle. The attraction is conveniently based in Marina Bay and features a wide of variety of enticing things to do and see that seamlessly mix Mother Nature with the metropolis. The Supertree Grove, the most recognized landmark of the park, features 18 "supertrees" that support the OCBC Skyway, a 419-foot-long aerial walkway that affords views of both the surrounding gardens, as well as Marina Bay.

In the nearby seashell-shaped facilities, visitors will find the highly lauded Flower Dome and Cloud Forest. The Flower Dome is the largest greenhouse in the world and showcases numerous types of plants and flowers grouped by country. Expect to find tulips next to replicas of Dutch architecture and Birds of Paradise flowers in the South African Garden. Cloud Forest Cloud Forest

The climate-controlled dome that houses Gardens by the Bay’s Cloud Forest carves out a futuristic looking space along Singapore’s skyline. An indoor waterfall serves as the Cloud Forest’s primary attraction, cascading 30 meters (about 98 feet) down the human-made mountain. The Cloud Forest’s climate aims to replicate misty tropical mountains, which are cooler than the local area, so jets of vapor and spray from the waterfall work together to create the attraction’s namesake fog.

Recent visitors primarily praise the indoor waterfall, adding that the attraction offers a welcome respite from Singapore’s sweltering heat. Travelers also marveled at the plants, which vary from level to level; however, they also warn that parts of the higher levels may be triggering for those with a fear of heights.

As a nation composed of mostly immigrants, Singapore possesses a number of ethnic enclaves. Chinatown is one of the largest of them. And though it's not associated with Chinese culture, you should stop in front of the Sri Mariamman Temple to admire its colorful, intricate facades.

When you tire of the urban jungle, head to an actual jungle: the Singapore Zoo. The expansive facility is broken up into 11 different zones and has 12 exhibits, affording numerous opportunities to get up close and personal with a diverse array of wildlife. V enture to Primate Kingdom and get a glimpse into the lives of the 39 species of primate that call that zone home . Or visit the Elephants of Asia exhibit, where you can rub elbows with the five big girls (all five elephants are female) hailing from Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Indonesia. Along with numerous exhibits, guests can also attend animal shows, go on tours and safaris (the night safari is particularly popular), or even feed some of the animals.

Recent travelers raved about the zoo. Visitors appreciated how well-maintained the zoo was: animals appeared to be well looked after and their enclosures appeared to be exactly what their habitats would look like in the wild. Both kids and adults reported being entertained, and some recommended allotting as much as an entire day for the zoo as there is that much to see.

Orchard Road Orchard Road free

Every modern metropolis must have its commercial avenue. Singapore's version is Orchard Road. This electric boulevard buzzes with  the whizzing of cars,  the humming of neon lights and  the swiping of credit cards, a far cry from the way things once were way back when. Orchard Road got its name from the presence of fruit orchards, nutmeg plantations and pepper farms that dotted the area in the early 19th century. Today, the mile-long street houses tons of eateries and a whopping 47 shopping malls carrying high end brands, popular international retailers like Zara and H&M as well as local shops. The massive  ION Orchard shopping complex is arguably the centerpiece of the street, so you'll inevitably be lured inside by the designer names and stream of fashionable patrons. 

We definitely encourage window-shopping, but depending on your purchasing power, you should be wary of the enticing bright lights here. At various stores, the price tags range from reasonable to obscene, so we recommend saving your cash for unique souvenirs found in other character-filled neighborhoods like Little India and Chinatown . If you're still interested in getting a taste of this flashy thoroughfare, Orchard Road also houses art galleries, movie theaters, clubs and various other entertainment opportunities.

Merlion Park Merlion Park free

On Marina Bay , Merlion Park hosts one of Singapore's most recognizable monuments. The Merlion statue is the head of a lion with the body and tail of a fish, and the hybrid creature spouts water from its mouth and into the bay. Measuring 28 feet tall, the statue may seem a bit odd to the naked eye, but the statue is actually a nod to Singapore's history. The head of Merlion represents Singapura, the city's first name, which means 'lion city' in Malay. The fish tail and body symbolizes Singapore's old days as a small fishing town. Even though  the statue has claimed all the fame, another notable highlight is the park's panoramic view of the bay. Particularly at night, the urban vista with the spectacular Marina Bay Sands resort impresses visitors. Some travelers, however, complained of congestion and suggested visiting when the sun isn't at its peak.

Sentosa is an entire island resort dedicated to fun for all ages. You want family-friendly amusement; head to Universal Studios Singapore, Adventure Cove Waterpark or S.E.A. You need some relaxation; then hit the links or stake your claim on miles of beaches, including Palawan Beach, the southernmost point of Continental Asia.  And that's really only some of the myriad of activities you can do on Sentosa. 

While Sentosa is a vacation destination that could take an entire week to consume, we suggest that you set aside one day from touring Singapore's cultural sites for some island fun. Although some visitors found the conglomerate to be overwhelming, travelers agreed that the attractions are not only top-notch but really fun as well.

Little India Little India free

Should you want to stray from the mainland, immerse yourself in Little India. This cultural enclave, located a little more than 2 miles northwest of Marina Bay , features a dense network of streets and shops where you can find anything from flower garlands to fragrant spices and colorful fabrics. Start by perusing the boutiques along Serangoon Road and then venture down the smaller alleyways to discover true treasures. There's also the 24-hour Mustafa Centre, perfect for grabbing any last-minute amenities, and the open-air Tekka Centre, which offers sari and goldsmith retailers. When your feet (and credit card) begin to tire, check out the gorgeous Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple, a Hindu place of worship.

Recent visitors enjoyed their trip to Little India, with many citing the neighborhood's authenticity as its best asset. Some travelers who are from or have visited India even went so far as to say that Little India made them feel as if they were in the country itself. Along with shopping, travelers strongly recommended arriving on an empty stomach to get a taste of the great northern and southern Indian dishes the neighborhood has to offer. But plan your time accordingly; Sundays are especially busy, according to reviewers. 

Singapore Flyer Singapore Flyer

Ever since Chicago built one in 1893 for the World Expo, cities around the world have learned that tourists really like Ferris wheels – huge ones. In 2000, London built its famous Eye , standing 443 feet tall. But Singapore didn't wait long before constructing the Flyer, which trumps its British equivalent by almost a hundred feet. Since opening in 2008, the 42-storey-tall Flyer, billed as Asia's largest giant observation wheel, has offered visitors 360-degree views of the urban landscape from Marina Bay . The attraction claims that visitors can catch a glimpse of neighboring Malaysia or Indonesia from the highest point of the observation wheel. 

Travelers label the Singapore Flyer as a must-do, with many saying the views atop the wheel are simply breathtaking. Visitors say the 30-minute ride time gives people ample time to take in the great views and snap lots of pictures. What's more, the pods are air-conditioned, making it a great place to also cool off from Singapore's year-round heat. Some suggested going at night to bare witness to the glittering city lights, or if you can, opt for a visit at dusk or sunset.

East Coast Park East Coast Park free

East Coast Park runs more than 9 miles along the southeast coast of Singapore. Visitors to the park can swim in the Singapore Strait; bask under the sun; barbecue and camp in the grass; and cycle or inline skate along the park’s paved path. The small park aims to appeal to every type of traveler, despite only covering less than 1 square mile of space.

Recent visitors appreciated the opportunity to get some exercise in at East Coast Park. They recommended renting a bike to take advantage of the park’s winding trail, while inline skating is also an option. Be careful during the weekends, though, as the paved path gets exceptionally crowded, according to recent visitors. After burning off some calories, travelers recommended taking advantage of the nearby shopping center.

The Southern Ridges The Southern Ridges free

Anyone who appreciates an excellent jaunt will love a visit to the Southern Ridges. Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, HortPark, Kent Ridge Park and Labrador Nature Reserve collectively make up the Southern Ridges. The Henderson Waves, a pedestrian bridge with wavy accents, is the area’s most stunning attraction. The bridge connects Telok Blangah Hill Park to Mount Faber Park. The Marang Trail offers another popular option and leads travelers to the top of Mount Faber.

The most commonly praised trail among past visitors is the Forest Walk, which connects HortPark and Telok Blangah Hill Park. The walk takes adventurers above the parks via an elevated platform, giving them a glimpse at the wildlife in and around the trees’ canopies.

Past visitors describe their experiences on the Singapore Cable Car as nice and relaxing. Even if you’re afraid of heights, the rides are allegedly so smooth that acrophobia is not a problem. Recent travelers suggest getting a one-day unlimited rides pass, so that you can use the cable cars continuously from open to close.

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve Bukit Timah Nature Reserve free

For those who want a wilder interaction with nature than Gardens by the Bay offers, the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve beckons from northwest of the city. The nature reserve sits about 8 miles from Singapore’s city center, in the geographic center of the island. The government dedicated the reserve in 1883 to protect the variety of plant, animal and insect life. Nowadays, travelers can trek to the top of Singapore’s tallest hill, Bukit Timah Hill, via the park’s paths.

Be sure to bring a camera; recent visitors snapped numerous photos of the area’s monkeys, foliage and birds. Past travelers appreciated that the reserve offers four different levels of hikes, which range from paved paths to steep slogs. Cyclists can also enjoy the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve’s well-built mountain biking trail. For this one-stop cultural shop, head to the Asian Civilizations Museum (ACM). This facility offers a broad survey Pan-Asian civilizations, including China, Southeast Asia and West Asia, with artwork and 1,300 artifacts from all corners of the continent. Wander through galleries and exhibitions and you'll find a diverse array of relics, such as religious sculptures, ornate furniture, Chinese ceramics and even remnants from a shipwreck.

Local Flavor: the best places to eat and drink in Singapore

There's a Singapore that people think they know, a hyper-globalized city of modern skyscrapers.

But once you know where to look, it peels away to another world, one where traditional beliefs and age-old customs are practiced. Eating is a national obsession. You know the city means serious business when the first inscription on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list is the hawker or street food culture.

My background revolved around food, cooking at restaurants and hosting supper clubs. I took my knowledge of the streets to set up a food tour company focusing on the backstreets and local eats of the place I was born and raised in.  I have made it my life mission to help people find the best eats in the city. 

Think of this guide as getting the keys to the other, less visible city and immersing in the life of real Singapore. Let's get started, shall we?

If there is one breakfast I can only ever have in my life, my unconditional love would be the quintessential Singapore breakfast, the coconut and egg jam (kaya) toast at YY Kafei Dian . In a city that thrives on efficiency, this old-school breakfast spot continues to make its kaya from scratch. The result is a subtle smokiness of the toast, slattered with homemade kaya and topped with slices of buttery goodness. However, if you’re looking for all things sourdough, Bakers Bench Bakery is my go-to for breakfast meetings or just to work at a nice and inviting space for a few hours. The sticky buns are a personal favorite!

Coffee and snacks

Singapore has a thriving coffee culture, whether it’s the traditional coffee (kopi) or the specialty coffee shops. 

Let’s start first with kopi . A dark and full-bodied brew, it uses robusta beans that grow well in the region thanks to the higher temperatures and lower altitudes. There are so many ways to serve kopi that infographics have been made to demystify the art of placing your order. For example, Kopi-O kosong is straight black, Kopi-C is with condensed milk, and Kopi-Peng is iced coffee (remember this, you need this on humid afternoons in the city). And having it as a takeaway? Sometimes it might come in a plastic bag.

I’m also incredibly lucky to live within walking distance from Nylon, a beautiful space nestled on the ground floor of one of the oldest social housing estates in the city. Its coffees are beautiful and the staff are so down-to-earth that this place is worth returning to over and over again. 

And while you are in the neighborhood, pop by Ji Xiang Ang Ku Kueh , which sells what I like to think of as Singapore-style mochi, which are handmade and fresh daily. If this is your first time trying this snack, I recommend the traditional flavors of peanut or sweet bean. For freshly baked granola, you can’t go wrong at  Dearborn .

It’s time to hit one of the most defining aspects of the local way of life – eating at a hawker center. No visit to Singapore is complete without this experience and my personal favorite is the Beach Road Market. There are so many good eats here, but I tend to gravitate towards a lesser-known star, the chicken curry noodles at Da Po Hainanese. This is the way that chicken curry noodles should be done. The star of the dish is the gravy. It has a light savoriness that the ingredients, like the tofu puffs, soak up like a sponge. This market is also famous for its floor of hiking gear shops and I have many memories of picking up stuff for a camping trip before heading down to the food market.

Mid-afternoons in Singapore can be quite hot and humid and if you are looking to have heritage Singaporean recipes in an air-conditioned space, Rempapa would be a top pick. You can’t leave without trying buah keluak fried rice. Buah keluak is a seed of a tree that is native to Indonesia and Malaysia and believe it or not, is highly toxic if not prepared correctly! And because there should always be space for dessert, I also highly recommend finishing off with kuehs  (local sweets).

The city is not short of Michelin-starred restaurants and if you want to eat in any of them, you will need to book in advance. However, if you would like a non-blingy casual restaurant, my recommendation would be 808 Eating House . Reservations are recommended but walk-ins are also possible. With a tagline of "More fun dining than fine dining," you know you’re in for a good time.

In the heart of the charming Joo Chiat neighborhood, the chef has managed to put the spotlight on local and regional ingredients with a new spin on classic dishes. The result is that creations are both technically precise and wildly inventive, like the barramundi on a lightly spiced garam masala pumpkin puree with a touch of curry leaf oil.

If you are looking for Indian food, my top pick is  Revolver , which serves innovative modern Indian cuisine with global influences, cooked on a grill or open flame. Service is impeccable and the extensive drink list makes it a fun night out.

There is so much to love about Fura . The drinks are top-notch and the food menu is designed to pair with the drinks. As if this isn't reason enough to check out this space, its use of sustainable ingredients is nothing short of inspiring. For example, jellyfish – an overpopulated species in the oceans – forms part of the jellyfish martini. I have tried it and I recommend you try it too! Expect a relaxed atmosphere and attentive service by the all-female team. 

On the same street is Platform , a quirky understated cocktail bar with minimalist interiors. The drinks here not only taste good, but are also nutritious. Try the light and refreshing Rooibos72, a blend of orange blossom water, horseradish, sparkling sake and blue pea flower. The set-up makes you feel like you are hanging out at a friend’s place to chill and unwind. Isn’t it amazing that there are still these little places that you can escape to, even if it’s for an hour or two?

Singapore has long had a reputation for being a stopover city, lacking in excitement, but times have changed and it’s anything but a sterile snooze these days, writes Katie Lockhart.

Thanks to a swath of shiny new hotels, attractions and finger-licking good food (and we don’t just mean chilli crab), Asia’s financial hub has never been more captivating. These latest additions to the Lion City aim to make Singapore not just a layover but a destination.

Try these new (and family-friendly) activities

From watching the light and sound show at Gardens By The Bay to sipping a Singapore Sling at The Raffles’ Long Bar, there are plenty of activities to fill your days and nights in Singapore. The city always has a burgeoning concert (*ahem*, Taylor) and event scene, but there’s also a handful of new attractions to add to your itinerary.

Spend a day at the beach

At first thought, sand and Singapore don’t seem to go together, but head to Sentosa and you’ll quickly change your mind. Opened in 2022, Central Beach Bazaar brings the carnival to the beach with retro games, a boutique and international food trucks . You’ll also catch Singaporeans bringing their kids to the Sentosa Musical Fountain, a beloved water show from the 1980s.

The Singapore Cable Car is celebrating 50 years with brand new SkyOrb Cabins. Hop in one of seven of the “world’s first chrome-finished spherical cable car cabins” and marvel at the emerald waters from its glass bottom. Anyone afraid of heights may want to stay behind.

Get your chocolate fix

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory meets Asia at Mr Bucket Chocolaterie , which opened on Dempsey Road a few years ago. This bean-to-bar chocolate factory prides itself on sourcing its cacao from sustainable farms throughout Asia. Sweet-toothed travellers can come here for souvenirs, daily tours or to make chocolate slabs with toppings like potato chips and popping candy.

Bird watching but not as you know it

Singapore has loads of green space; in fact, it’s one of the world’s greenest cities. Bird Paradise, which opened in Mandai Wildlife Reserve last year, is home to more than 3500 vibrant birds such as the Papuan hornbill and king penguins. Animal lovers can walk through eight different aviaries, marvelling at 400 rare and unique species from across the globe.

The latest and greatest places to stay

Home to nearly every major hotel brand on Earth, Singapore has no shortage of iconic places to stay, from The Raffles to the newly updated Mandarin Oriental. With a focus on “going green”, many of the latest arrivals are helping the country achieve its lofty goals of net-zero hotel emissions by 2050.

Pan Pacific Orchard

One of the city’s most sustainable hotels, the Pan Pacific Orchard takes the green ethos to another level. From the cascading plants to the shade of the staff’s suits to the marble lining the floors, everything here is green. Opened last year, its 206 rooms reflect Singapore’s four environments: forest, beach, garden and cloud. Its massive open-air lobby and 14,000 square metres of foliage and water features make you feel far removed from any kind of concrete jungle.

21 Carpenter

The city’s latest edition is arguably its coolest. Converted from a 1930s remittance house, this boutique hotel has just 48 impeccably styled rooms. Blending old and new, the rooms feature heritage touches with sleek custom-made furniture. The hotel’s lush, open garden terrace is the perfect place to relax with a book, and its rooftop infinity pool has unobstructed views of Marina Bay Sands.

Mondrian Singapore Duxton

Arguably the most exciting opening of 2023 , the 302-room Mondrian hired a unique group of individuals, from a former inmate to a former Olympian, to work inside this quirky art-filled hotel. While the design and spacious shophouse-style suites are eye-catching, the big draw is the hotel’s rooftop pool with skyscraper views.

The Singapore EDITION

The EDITION brand’s first foray into Southeast Asia is situated on shopaholic-friendly Orchard Road . Its 204 rooms are light and bright, with light timber flooring and a white colour scheme, giving each a relaxed, clean feel. Book a table at its signature restaurant Fysh, where Australian celeb chef Josh Niland works magic with seafood.

Singapore’s best food and drink venues for 2024

Singapore is a foodie city through and through. From its 100-plus Unesco-listed hawker centres to its reputation as the cocktail bar capital of Asia, it’s impossible to go hungry or thirsty in this munching metropolis.

Martin’s Kitchen

Much like Singapore, Martin’s Kitchen is a melting pot. Blending European, Mexican and Hakka (Singapore’s fourth-largest Chinese dialect group) flavours, this new hotspot creates a unique menu filled with comfort food. Try the Hakka ravioli, filled with pork and fish, served with a spicy Szechuan sauce, or the kong ba pao tacos with coriander mayo.

The Backdrop

Singapore’s newest speakeasy is inside the voco Orchard Singapore and requires a special key to enter. Once you do, the bar’s burlesque-glam interiors take you back to the 1920s, where the speciality is cocktail guru Dario Knox’s groundbreaking Percolated Cocktails.

Bali-based dessert king WIll Goldfarb and former Noma chef Matthew Orlando have created a 3700-square-metre farm-to-table concept. But more than just an eco-conscious Southeast Asian restaurant, the team here holds sustainable workshops, ferments food and cultivates produce for each dish.

Bar Spectre

While a bar about wellness may sound like an oxymoron, this new vintage-themed cocktail bar has a thoughtful non-alcoholic menu and boozy drinks made with traditional Chinese medicine. Spectre’s bar bites also lean towards healthy, with locally sourced items like silken tofu and avocado hummus.

After strolling through the orchid garden, stop at this new restaurant inside the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The kitchen creates an exceptional multi-course tasting menu using ingredients from the gardens mixed with French techniques. Served inside a stunningly restored 1910s black-and-white home, it’s a quintessential Singapore experience.

Pael.et Bar

The perfect Friday night hangout, Pael.et (pronounced palette) is a welcome new arrival to Singapore’s glorious bar scene. Fun cocktails like the Itsumi Martini, made with pasta water, and the Espress Yourself, made with pandan and salted egg, are must-tries, as are the moreish bar bites. With a focus on community arts (hence the name,) the walls here are lined with work from local artists.

Getting around in Singapore

While locals may lament Singapore’s small size, the compact cityscape is perfect for exploring on foot. Easy to navigate, with plenty of colour to see between major attractions, walking around Singapore is highly recommended. The only caveat is that the city’s sweltering heat and sky-high humidity may leave you drenched in sweat, just like its afternoon rain showers.

Singapore’s public transport, including buses and the MRT, is an efficient and cost-saving option, especially with its Singapore Tourist Pass. Travellers can buy an unlimited travel pass for one, two or three days to check off all the iconic sites and new activities on their list.

Singapore Airlines is one of the world’s best carriers and recently announced an extension of its partnership with Air New Zealand. Through till 2029, the airline will increase the number of flights, reportedly offering four daily services between Auckland and Singapore by 2025. Luckily for Kiwis, experiencing the latest and greatest in Singapore will be easier than ever.
