Princess Cruises has unveiled its longest 116-day world cruise as extended itineraries continue to see 'record' success

  • Princess Cruises unveiled its longest itinerary yet, a 2025 116-day world cruise to 51 locations.
  • Extended and around-the-world cruises have seen "record-breaking" booking success.
  • Cruise lines like Oceania Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, and now Princess have been capitalizing on this trend.

Travelers have been craving longer cruises now more than ever before.

And in response, cruise lines — from smaller luxury companies to cruising giants — have been unveiling more extended itineraries to "record breaking" success.

From a one-month transoceanic cruise to a nine-month circumnavigation of the globe, travelers now have plenty of options for these longer sailings.

princess cruises 116 day cruise

Booking a similar around-the-world or extended vacation using planes, trains, cars, and hotels instead of a cruise ship could be a complicated logistical nightmare.

But on a cruise vessel, all of the destinations, planning, food, and accommodations are already included.

There's no need to transfer airports or unpack and repack between hotels.

All the traveler has to do is sit back, take a nap on the pool deck, and wait for the ship to sail from destination to destination.

Regent has also been breaking its own records for the length of its itineraries.

Its most recently announced $95,000 to $266,500 per person global cruise — 154-night itinerary roundtrip from Miami in 2026— will be its longest sailing yet.

This shatters the previous record set only one year prior when Regent unveiled its 150-night 2025 world cruise, which was fully reserved before it even opened for bookings.

New-to-brand travelers made up over one-third of bookings for this 2025 cruise, a spokesperson told Insider in an email.

This ratio of returning to new travelers is the same for Oceania Cruises' currently underway 2023 world sailing, a spokesperson for the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings' brand told Insider.

The Oceania cruise departed for its circumnavigation of the world in mid-January and will complete its journey in July.

The Only Cruise To The Top Of The Severn Navigation

This cruise sails the full length of the navigable inland River Severn, from Gloucester to Stourport on Severn and is our only cruise which travels north of Worcester.

The Edward Elgar lowers her flybridge and upper deck to shoot under Worcester Bridge and then squeezes into locks only a few inches wider than her.

At every stop there is a Cathedral, Abbey, museum or place of historic interest.

We expect this cruise to sell out before our season begins. Book today to avoid disappointment.

I'm a single traveller. Do you have single cabins and single rates?

Yes. We have on-site parking at the boarding point in Gloucester which is covered, locked and has CCTV.

Parking is £7 per night on our standard package and included in the "Plus" package.

I have reduced mobility, is this suitable for me?

We have been inspected by VisitEngland and received an M1 mobility rating. If you would like a full copy of our access guidance then you can find it here .

Do you allow children?

Our holidays are designed to be completely laid back and relaxed. We do not usually allow bookings with children as it is an adult only setting. However, if you charter the vessel in full for Christmas cruises, we do allow children but we ask that children are a minimum of 7 years old for safety reasons.

Do I need travel insurance cover?

Yes. It is very important in case you have to cancel unexpectedly. We do not sell travel insurance but we will provide you with details of travel insurance providers that can arrange suitable cover for one of our cruises. You can use any insurer and we don't insist you use our partner insurer. It is important you purchase coverage as soon as you have booked your holiday. Why I still think Avalon Waterways has the best cabins in river cruising

Gene Sloan

Editor's Note

It's all about the view.

As I write this, I am propped up in bed on Avalon Waterways' new Avalon Alegria, marveling at the stunning landscape passing by just a few feet beyond my toes.

The 102-passenger river vessel is sailing up Portugal's famously lovely Douro Valley, and I'm being treated to an ever-moving scene of rolling hills, vineyards and centuries-old towns.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

It's a view I wouldn't have if I were lounging in bed on most other river ships in Europe — at least, if I had my back to the headboard.

Unlike on Avalon Alegria, the beds in cabins on most river ships in Europe face sideways to an interior wall. It's unusual for cabins on river ships in Europe to be configured so that the beds face the view.

It's a little thing that makes all the difference.

As I've written about several times over the years at other publications, Avalon Waterways has my favorite river cruise cabins in Europe, in large part because the beds are configured to face the view in most of them.

river cruises in worcester

It's not just the view-facing beds in Avalon cabins that win my adoration. It's the use of an almost complete wall of glass along the view-side of many Avalon rooms to frame the passing scenery.

Related: Why a Douro River cruise may be the ultimate friends group getaway

While not every cabin on Avalon vessels in Europe is configured this way, a large portion are. Avalon calls these view-facing cabins with walls of glass Panorama Suites, and they can make up roughly 80% of the cabins on many of the line's vessels.

It's been a key differentiator for Avalon since the cabins began rolling out in 2011. That was the year Avalon unveiled its first Suite Ship, as the line calls vessels with such cabins. The line now operates 16 such vessels in Europe and Asia.

Glass walls instead of balconies

One of the big differences between the Panorama Suites on Avalon's Suite Ships and the cabins on the river ships of some competitors is that they don't have balconies. That allows the entire wall facing the outside to be turned into one big glass panel.

On most Avalon ships, these glass panels measure an astounding 11 feet wide.

What's more, the glass wall can slide open sideways to create a 7-foot-wide opening for fresh air. (Don't worry; you won't fall out when it's open. There is a secondary glass wall that rises up partway with a railing at its top to create a safety barrier.)

Related: 9 best river cruises in Europe

river cruises in worcester

As I am seeing on Avalon Alegria and have seen when sailing many other Avalon vessels, the Panorama Suites typically have small seating areas next to the walls of glass. When the glass wall is slid open, you have the feeling of being on a balcony even though it's not a balcony, as you can sit in the seating area at the edge of the now-open wall.

It's an "open-air" balcony, as Avalon calls it.

It's the highlight feature of a cabin type that is perfect in just about every way. At 200 square feet, Panorama Suites are larger than most standard cabins on European river ships. They're modern and stylish, too. They have comfy beds and elegant bathrooms with spacious showers.

Adding balconies to cabins on river ships isn't easy. The narrowness of the locks on European rivers means that river ships must be built to be very narrow — too narrow to have cabins that are both spacious enough to be comfortable and have balconies at their ends.

Still, many river lines design their river ships with balconies attached to cabins despite such limitations, as they believe it's what customers want. They do it by stealing space away from the interior parts of cabins.

The result is often cabins that have balconies but feel tight on the inside.

In designing its Panorama Suites on river ships without balconies but with stellar views through walls of glass, Avalon has bucked the trend in river cruise cabin design — and in just the right way.

Cabins with balconies are all the rage in cruising, of course, and cruisers think that's what they want. But when you're river cruising, what really matters is the view. You want to see the scenery of the river bank as it rolls by, preferably from the comfort of your bed.

On that count, Avalon's Panorama Suites, with their view-facing beds and walls of glass, have delivered mightily since they first began debuting in 2011.

TPG's Gene Sloan is reporting live this week from a preview sailing aboard Avalon Alegria, Avalon Waterways' first vessel on Portugal's Douro River. Visit his author's page at TPG for all his dispatches.

I Planned a River Cruise With 48 of My Closest Friends and Family — Here’s How You Can, Too

Here's how I pulled off the trip of a lifetime.

There’s nothing my husband and I love more than traveling, but doing so with family and friends — especially if they’re hesitant travelers or we’re walking them through their first trip to Europe — makes it all the more meaningful for us.

So, as we looked ahead to December 2023 — we'd both be turning 30 and nearing 10 years married — we began to brainstorm epic ways to celebrate.

We thought back to one of our most treasured travel experiences — our first river cruise — on the (unfortunately) now-defunct U River Cruises, and knew this was the perfect way to get as many of our loved ones as possible on board for a week-long adventure in Europe (with minimal logistical headaches and day-to-day planning required on our part).

Sure, I’m a travel writer, but I make no claims as a group trip specialist, and a river cruise has daily itineraries, plus meals, excursions, and fun programming built in. With a mostly U.S.-based group, we knew Europe was the right destination, too: Access is easy, we’ve been many times, and it’s a comfortable first major trip abroad for even the most timid travelers.

As we began to plan Aaron and Skye’s Epic 30th Birthday Bash River Cruise Extravaganza, I scoured CruiseMapper and reviewed charter and group booking options from Emerald Cruises, Lüftner, Avalon Waterways, Uniworld, Tauck, Viking, Amadeus, and more; I compared costs, dates, itineraries, availability, and occupancy of various ships, routes, and companies.

After much deliberation, we went with AmaWaterways , which turned out to be first in the long line of things that went right.

The Details

AmaWaterways, a family-owned river cruise company with European roots, offered a part-charter option on its newest ship at the best price and at the most convenient time: the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

We spent Dec. 28, 2023, through Jan. 4, 2024 aboard the AmaSiena , sailing the Rhine River from Basel, Switzerland, to Amsterdam, Netherlands (one of our all-time favorite cities, an added bonus), on an itinerary known as the Enchanting Rhine .

The Difference Between a Full Charter, Part Charter, and Group Booking

With AmaWaterways, a part charter is similar to a group booking, but you’re obligated to a minimum. Once you sign, you “own” that number of cabins and are responsible for filling them, but can switch names and even cabin types (depending on availability) throughout the process, if needed. The public can also book cabins on a partly chartered ship.

A full charter means reserving the entire ship for your group’s private use; this is more expensive, unless you have a group big enough to fill every cabin and can divide the costs accordingly.

We went with a part-charter option for 10 cabins initially, but ended up with 28 filled. All the bookings had to go through me — a welcome excuse to let my extreme attention to detail be put to good use.

We chose our cruise because the time frame, while a busy period to travel, is also when most people are already off work (or have a lighter-than-usual load). Plus, we’d get to ring in a new year together, and a holiday or special occasion makes a trip like this even easier to justify. Our priority was making the trip as accessible as possible to as many of our loved ones as possible.

Another perk? This route comfortably hit four countries (Switzerland, Germany, France, and the Netherlands) in a week, checking off lots of countries for everyone.

All 48 members of our crew had as epic of a time as we did — we’re already discussing the second installment of what will perhaps become an annual tradition — and while our group consisted of relatives and friends both old and new, by the end, we all felt like family.

Having almost everyone I love sleeping within 100 feet of me for a week, walking off the ship each morning to explore new countries together, celebrating a massive joint birthday party, watching cousins mingle with best friends mingle with family friends mingle with work partners, seeing New Year’s Eve fireworks erupt in a 360-degree panorama from the ship’s top deck, and partying until the sun rose on New Year’s day — a life highlight, indeed.

How to Plan Your Own River Cruise Group Trip

Want to recreate this memorable adventure in your own way? Below are some tips for helping your trip go off without a hitch.

Don’t poll.

Yes, I said it: Don’t ask for opinions. Everyone’s going to have a different perspective and you’ll overwhelm yourself trying to cater to them all. There’s no way you can please everyone with the perfect itinerary and dates, so do your best to put forth a reasonable plan, get buy-in from a few MVPs, and let go of the rest.

Create a website.

Unless you want to continually email or text the same information again and again, collect all the relevant links, plans, details, and thoughts in one easy-to-reference receptacle, like a website. Think of it as a wedding website, but for your group trip. Websites are easy to create with Wix, and you can include pages with travel tips, flight recommendations, packing advice , checklists, timelines, and more. You can also use Wix to send email newsletters when you need to blast information to everyone.

Organize, organize, organize.

When it comes to your role as acting-travel-agent-in-chief, Google Drive is your friend. I created a meticulously organized Google Drive, where I tracked everything in documents, sheets, and more, and used Google Forms for further planning.

Check your passport.

You know what’s not fun? Being on the hook for a traveler who can’t find their passport or neglected to check its expiration date .

As guests commit and book, have them send you their passport expiration date so that they locate their passport with plenty of time before the trip and you can ensure it’s still valid. Remember, some countries require six months of validity on a passport.

Encourage early arrivals.

Flying in before your adventure officially begins is a good way to spend extra quality time together, get the mingling started, and ward off any potential travel snafus and delays. You can count on something going wrong with this many moving parts, but by cushioning the beginning of your trip in case of emergency, you’ll get peace of mind and some padding where it counts.

As the hosts, we arrived in Europe eight days before embarking on our river cruise, opting for a brief stay in Zürich followed by a snowboarding trip in Zermatt to celebrate Christmas and my husband’s birthday. We then took the train to Basel (as a group of seven, after convincing friends to join!).

Create a group chat.

As your adventure nears, a group chat is a great way to get everyone on the same page, make announcements, and begin intros. WhatsApp, Telegram, and Slack are all good options. Just be prepared for the conversation to continue long after the trip — the love is still going strong in ours.

Maryland transportation secretary says contractors were working on bridge at time of collapse

From CNN's Antoinette Radford

Maryland State Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld told reporters there were workers on the Francis Scott Key Bridge at the time of its collapse.

"We know there were individuals on the bridge at the time of the collapse, working on the bridge, contractors for us," he said at a news conference Tuesday morning.

Wiedefeld said the workers were "basically doing some concrete deck repair," but said they did not know how many vehicles were involved.

He added that the transport authority has set up a facility for family members of those who were believed to be on the bridge at the time of its collapse.

Baltimore fire chief: Sonar has detected the presence of vehicles submerged in the water

A helicopter flies over the scene of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 26.

Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace says authorities have detected vehicles submerged in the water.

“Our sonar has detected the presence of vehicles submerged in the water,” said Wallace at a news conference on the collapse of Francis Scott Key Bridge. “I don't have a count of that yet.”

He said emergency services are using sonar, drones and infrared technology as a part of their search for people and vehicles who may have fallen from the Key Bridge into the Patapsco River.

No indication of "terrorism" or intent in Baltimore bridge collapse, police chief says

From CNN’s Andy Rose

Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley, with Mayor Brandon Scott, right, and Fire Department Chief James Wallace, left, speaks at a press conference on the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge Baltimore, Maryland, on March 26.

Baltimore Police said there was no evidence that the ship collision that caused the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge was intentional.

“There is absolutely no indication that there's any terrorism, that this was done on purpose,” Chief Richard Worley said at a news conference.

The FBI  said  that it was joining the investigation into the cause of the collision.

Rescue crews have determined there are vehicles in the Patapsco River following the bridge collapse.

“Our sonar has detected the presence of vehicles submerged in the water,” said Fire Chief James Wallace. “I don't have a count of that yet.”

Wallace said they are waiting to make sure that the ship is secure and stable before investigators board it.

“Never would you think that you would see, physically see, the Key Bridge tumble down like that,” Mayor Brandon M. Scott said.

Cruises, cars and commodities: What to know about the Port of Baltimore

From CNN's Mark Thompson and Hanna Ziady

In this aerial image cargo containers are readied for transport at the Port of Baltimore in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 14, 2021.

The collapse of the   Francis Scott Key Bridge over the Patapsco River outside the Port of Baltimore threatens to disrupt shipping operations at a major US trade hub for autos, container traffic and commodities. Baltimore also has a cruise terminal.

Closer to the Midwest than any other port on the East Coast, Baltimore ranks first in the United States for autos and light trucks, handling a record 850,000 vehicles last year. It was also the leading port for farming and construction machinery, as well as imported sugar and gypsum. It was second in the country for exporting coal.

Overall, Baltimore ranks as the 9th biggest US port for international cargo, handling a record 52.3 million tons, valued at $80.8 billion in 2023.

“The immediate focus is the rescue operation, but there will clearly be a highly-complex recovery phase and investigation to follow and we don't know what impact this will have on operations at the Port of Baltimore," said Emily Stausbøll, market analyst at Norway-based shipping analytics company Xeneta.

“While Baltimore is not one of the largest US East Coast ports, it still imports and exports more than one million containers each year so there is the potential for this to cause significant disruption to supply chains," she added.

Baltimore's cruise terminal serves ships operated by Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian. Cruises carrying more than 444,000 passengers departed from the port last year.

According to the Maryland state government, the port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in related services.

Rescue crews looking for at least seven people in Baltimore bridge collapse

Rescue operations are underway near the wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, as crews look for people who fell into the Patapsco River.

“We are still very much in an active search and rescue posture at this point, and we will continue to be for some time,” Wallace added.

Baltimore Fire says two people have been rescued from the river – one who was uninjured, and another in hospitalized “very serious condition.”

“This is an unthinkable tragedy,” Mayor Brandon Scott said. “We have to first and foremost pray for all of those impacted.”

Ship that collided with Baltimore bridge was chartered by Danish shipping company Maersk

The Dali container vessel after striking the Francis Scott Key Bridge that collapsed into the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland, US, on March 26.

The container ship that collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday was chartered by Maersk and carrying their customers' cargo, the Danish shipping company told CNN.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," The company said in its statement.

The company, which has a full name of A.P. Moller - Maersk, said no company crew and personnel were onboard the vessel. It said the ship, DALI, is operated by charter vessel company Synergy Group.

"We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed," the statement said.

CNN is attempting to contact the owner and managers of the ship, including Synergy.

FBI Baltimore on the scene at the Key Bridge

FBI Baltimore personnel are on the scene at the Francis Scott Key Bridge, they have said in a post on X.

The agency said it was working "side by side with our local, state and federal partners."

Baltimore fire emergency chief says 2 people saved from water after Key Bridge collapse

The Baltimore Fire Department Chief James Wallace says authorities rescued two people from the water this morning, one without injury and the other who has been transferred to hospital in a serious condition.

Authorities are continuing their search for upwards of seven people, Wallace says. But, he says that number could change as it is a "very large incident." Earlier on Tuesday, an official said as many as 20 people could be in the water.

Wallace added that the crew remains on board the ship, and are communicating with the US Coast Guard. He added that emergency services are looking into reports that there were workers on the bridge at the time of the incident.

Speaking at the press conference, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott also described the incident as an “unthinkable tragedy,” and offered his prayers for all those affected, as well as his thanks to first responders.

Authorities share updates on Baltimore bridge collapse

Authorities are holding a news conference on the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore after it was struck by a large ship.

Divers and search and rescue teams are searching for people in the Patapsco River after several vehicles are believed to have fallen into the water, including one as large as a tractor-trailer, said Kevin Cartwright, director of communications of the Baltimore City Fire Department.

Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse live updates: Ship hits major Baltimore bridge with construction crew on it

What we know.

  • A major bridge in Baltimore partially collapsed overnight after it was hit by a cargo ship, authorities said. A representative from Brawner Builders Inc. told NBC News that the company had a construction crew on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed. Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said the crew was fixing potholes.
  • A search was underway this morning for at least six people who were feared to have been sent plunging into the river, the city's fire chief said, while two people were rescued. Sonar was used to detect vehicles submerged in the water, he added. Authorities believe the eight people were all part of the construction crew.
  • The Francis Scott Key Bridge, which carries Interstate 695 over the Patapsco River, was hit by the 948-foot Dali container ship, the U.S. Coast Guard told NBC News.
  • Between the mayday call and the collapse of the Key Bridge, officials were able to stop the flow of traffic from continuing onto the collapsed bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said, adding that the call "saved lives."
  • Dramatic video shows the moment the bridge appears to snap and then tumble into the river after the vessel collides with one of its supporting structures.

Buttigieg downplays concerns about U.S. bridges, calls Baltimore collision and collapse 'unique'

river cruises in worcester

Matt Lavietes

Speaking with reporters Tuesday afternoon, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg sought to tamp down concerns about the safety and durability of other bridges throughout the country.

"This is a unique circumstance," Buttigieg said, referring to the Francis Scott Key Bridge. "I do not know of a bridge that has been constructed to withstand a direct impact from a vessel of this size."

Buttigieg also promised that the Biden administration would provide Marylanders with support "for as long as it takes," noting the significance of the Key Bridge to the city of Baltimore and to the nation.

"This is no ordinary bridge," he said. "This is one of the cathedrals of American infrastructure. It has been part of the skyline of this region for longer than many of us have been alive."

Buttigieg added that the "path to normalcy will not be easy," quick or inexpensive.

"So in many ways, our work is just beginning to rebuild this bridge and deal with impacts in the meantime, to reopen this port and deal with supply chain impacts in the meantime," he said. "But today we are most acutely focused on the emergency operations underway and on the families that have been impacted."

Buttigieg says collapse will have a 'major and protracted impact' on supply chains

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg acknowledged that the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge will have a "major and protracted impact" on supply chains.

"There is no question that this will be a major and protracted impact to supply chains," Buttigieg said, addressing reporters Tuesday afternoon. "It’s too soon to offer estimates on what it will take to clear the channel and reopen the port."

The Port of Baltimore is the biggest automobile shipping hub in the country.

'Very much still a search and rescue mission,' Maryland governor says

Flanked by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and other government officials, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said authorities are still searching for survivors.

"This is very much still a search and rescue mission," Moore said. "We are still actively looking for survivors ... and that’s a pledge we made to these families."

"There is not a single resource that we will hold off on deploying. I have already authorized the deployment of everything from air, land and sea resources to make sure that this search and rescue operation is carried out to its fullest intent," he added.

Moore acknowledged that the path ahead to heal the community will not be short or easy.

"There’s going to be a long road, not just as we go from search and rescue," he said. "There’ll be a long road as we talk about, 'What does the future of this region, the future of the area look like?' And we’re gonna need each and every one of you."

NTSB has not boarded ship yet, don't have access to 'critical' data recorders

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said that the agency's investigators have not yet boarded the cargo ship to access voice data recorders.

Homendy said that the agency did not want to interfere with the search and rescue operation by authorities and will most likely board the ship for its investigation tomorrow.

"We chose not to board the vessel today to allow some time for the search and recovery which we did not want to interfere with, that is that first and foremost," Homendy said. "We do have some information, but we need to verify that information first before I provide that information."

Homendy noted that retrieving the ship's voice data recorders will be "critical" in the NTSB's investigation.

Ship appeared to have 'serious mechanical issues,' captain and maritime instructor says

river cruises in worcester

Jon Schuppe

Capt. Morgan McManus, an instructor at SUNY Maritime College in New York who has worked on container ships, said he could tell there were “serious mechanical issues” with the shipping vessel that struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

McManus said video of the Dali, showing its lights going on and off and not making any apparent evasive maneuvers in the minutes before striking the bridge, indicated a loss of power and steering. When that happens, “you’re basically driving out of control,” McManus said.

“There is no worse feeling on a ship than when it goes silent,” he said.

By that point, the Dali would have already left tug boats and a docking pilot behind but would have remained under the guidance of a harbor pilot, McManus said. A statement from the Dali’s owner said the ship had two pilots on board, but didn’t specify what kind.

Ships can drop anchors in an attempt to avert a collision, but given the Dali’s size, speed and distance from the bridge, such a move likely wouldn’t have helped, McManus said. He said that the video appears to show the Dali’s anchors dropped, but it wasn’t clear to him whether that was done before or after the collision.

An investigation of the crash will likely look at why the Dali lost power and propulsion and include examinations of maintenance logs and inspection reports, McManus said.

According to data on the website Equasis, a September 2023 inspection of the Dali in Chile noted “deficiencies” in “propulsion and auxiliary machinery,” including gauges and thermometers. But the ship had subsequent inspections, including one in September in New York, in which no deficiencies were noted.

McManus stressed that those recorded deficiencies don’t necessarily mean anything related to the collision. They “could have been paperwork,” he said.

'Like a scene out of a movie': Only 4 minutes between ship's lights going off and collapse

NBC News’ Ryan Nobles breaks down the Francis Scott Key Bridge collpase timeline that appears to show the four minutes between the moment the cargo ship’s lights went off to the moment the bridge collapsed.

Twisted wreckage in Baltimore stands as a memorial to people gathering to grieve

Peter Nicholas

BALTIMORE — They’d gotten text messages in the middle of the night or woke this morning to the frightening news that the Francis Scott Key Bridge had been struck by an immense cargo ship and collapsed.

So, these Baltimore residents leashed their dogs and gathered up friends and family to head to the Fort McHenry seawall, with its heart-rending view of the twisted remains of what for decades had been a comforting landmark, a symbol of home.

There, they stared across Baltimore harbor as Coast Guard ships searched for survivors. Quietly, they grieved for the dead and hoped that the living might still be plucked from the cold waters.

They still don’t know who may have died when parts of the bridge fell into the Patapsco River.

Ship that hit bridge was in 2016 collision in Belgium

river cruises in worcester

The container ship that hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday, the MS Dali, crashed into the Port of Antwerp in Belgium in 2016, port authorities there said.

That collision, on July 11, 2016, resulted in a quay wall being damaged, Antwerp port authorities said in a statement. An investigation was conducted by the Belgian nautical commission. It's not clear what the results were.

The port didn’t disclose a cause of the accident, but said that “in case an incident happens, a ship can only leave the port after experts have determined that it can sail safely.”

Video from that incident shows the ship crashing into a wall at the port.

Massive engineering task lies ahead after bridge collapse

Kyla Guilfoil

NBC News' Tom Costello reports that it will be a major project to clear the debris and reopen the Port of Baltimore following the bridge collapse.

The water beneath the bridge is believed to be about 50-feet deep, Costello added, so there will be difficult job ahead for reopening the port.

As the 11th largest port in the U.S., the port is critical for cargo shipping and its closing could affect vehicle sales on the East Coast, Costello said.

Costello added that while two victims were rescued from the water following the collapse, six remain missing. With water temperatures still very low, Costello said there are concerns about survivability.

Engineer explains the Key Bridge collapse

Sameh Badie, a professor of engineering at George Washington University, discussed the collapse of Francis Scott Key Bridge on NBC Washington on Tuesday, explaining that the structure of the bridge could not handle the load of its span after one piece had been destroyed in the collision.

Badie said that the Key Bridge is a continuous steel truss bridge. When the cargo vessel collided with one of the more central piers of the bridge, it could no longer sustain the full span of its weight, causing the collapse, Badie said.

Badie added that the bridge was built in the 1970s, when the size and load of weight of the vessels crossing beneath the bridge were much smaller than the vessel that collided with the bridge today.

Biden says federal government will pay to rebuild bridge

Marlene Lenthang

Biden said in brief remarks today : “It’s my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge."

"I expect Congress to support my effort. This is going to take some time. The people of Baltimore can count of us to stick with them at every step of the way until the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt," he added.

When pressed further on why the federal government will pay for repairs when the ship may have some culpability, he said, “that could be but we’re not going to wait for that to happen. We’re going to pay for it to get the bridge rebuilt and open.”

Biden said he plans to visit Baltimore “as quickly as I can.”

Biden calls collapse a 'terrible accident'

Biden said today from the White House that he's spoken with Maryland’s governor, Baltimore’s mayor and other officials and has assured them, “We’re going to rebuild that port together.”

Biden said the government will send "all the federal resources they need as they respond to this emergency." He noted he has been over the Francis Scott Key Bridge “many, many times” in his commutes from Delaware.

He said eight people were unaccounted for in the collapse, two of whom were rescued — one without injury, one in critical condition.

He shared "thoughts and prayers" for the families impacted and noted so far reports indicate this was "a terrible accident" and not an "intentional act."

Melissa Chan

Some of the construction workers who are now unaccounted for after the bridge collapse recently had babies, one of their colleagues said.

About three or four of the Brawner Builders crew members had welcomed babies within the last year, according to Earl Schneider, a structural foreman with the company.

“I know everybody on that crew personally. They’re all great people,” he said. “It’s tough. It’s been a rough morning."

Schneider, 33, said he last worked on the bridge about two weeks ago. He woke up around 2 a.m. to frantic phone calls from a friend who works at a hospital, who thought Schneider might have been on the bridge early this morning.

Schneider said he then called the crew members he knew were on the bridge, but all the calls went to voicemail.

“It’s tragic in a sense of like, it’s a blessing I wasn’t on there, but it comes at the cost of somebody else,” he said. “Folks had their lives changed in a blink of an eye. You don’t know how much time you’ve got.”

Teen describes being awakened by Baltimore bridge collapse

Baltimore resident Kayleigh Gray, 14, was startled awake early today when she heard “a real loud boom” and her bed started shaking as a cargo ship slammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

“Since I was asleep, my grandmother woke me up and said, ‘The bridge is gone.’ I said, ‘What are you talking about?’ She said, ‘The ship hit it.’ I said, ‘There’s no way. You’re’ lying,” Gray told NBC News correspondent George Solis. Her grandmother then showed her video footage of the devastating crash.

She said she and her family go over that bridge every day. Her first thoughts went to the people impacted.

“I was worried about the families to be honest ... I called friends. We called friends and family seeing who was on the bridge. Because my grandfather, he’s supposed to go over that bridge every day. He’s a truck driver. He was supposed to be on that bridge today around 7:30 a.m.,” Gray said.

She said the bridge means "a lot" to people who grew up in the area and hopes that it'll be rebuilt.

Worker recently moved off bridge repair is in 'shock'

A construction worker who was recently moved off a project to repair the bridge is in “shock” as he waits for news on at least six of his colleagues who are now missing.

James Krutzfeldt, 34, a foreman for Brawner Builders, told NBC News he was working on the bridge about two weeks ago. One of his colleagues who was unaccounted for this morning is another foreman whom Krutzfeldt considers his mentor and “work dad.”

“We’re all just waiting for a phone call,” he said. “It’s all up in the air. We’re waiting on our boss and owner to break it down to everybody.”

At least seven workers were pouring concrete to fix potholes on the roadway on the bridge directly above where the ship hit, Krutzfeldt said.

That repair project has been going on for about four years, he said. “We all bounce around,” he said. “It’s sad. I haven’t really realized it yet. I’m still kind of in shock.”

Biden addresses Key Bridge collapse after briefing

Biden was briefed on the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge this morning by senior members of his team, according to a post to his X account.

The president emphasized that the White House is committed to supporting the response to the collapse.

"I’ve directed my Administration to ensure every federal resource is available to assist search and rescue efforts and response to this terrible incident," the post read.

Biden is scheduled to speak at 12:30 ET on the collapse.

‘Could never imagine:’ Baltimore resident describes moment he heard bridge collapse

BALTIMORE — A resident of suburban Baltimore who can see the Francis Scott Key Bridge from his backyard said he woke up in the middle of the night to his home shaking.

"I could have never, never imagined that it was the Key Bridge that had just collapsed," Georgio Comninos said. "I thought it was perhaps like a really low flying, maybe a military jet, perhaps a small earthquake however unlikely that is in Baltimore."

He questioned why the bridge collapsed so quickly after its collision with the cargo ship.

"I mean, was this thing held up with toothpicks?" Comninos asked. "What’s the deal?

Maersk pauses shipping through Baltimore port

Maersk, a shipping company with vessels in the Baltimore port, released a new customer advisory pausing its shipping through the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore for the time being.

The company said that it would be "omitting Baltimore on all our services for the foreseeable future, until it is deemed safe for passage through this area."

"We are deeply concerned by this incident and are closely monitoring the situation," Maersk's advisory said.

Size of ship negated any measures meant to deflect ships, Johns Hopkins professor says

Jason Abbruzzese

The ship that hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge was big enough that any safety measures meant to try to limit the impact of a collision would have been rendered ineffective, according to Benjamin Schafer, a professor of civil and systems engineering at the nearby Johns Hopkins University.

He stressed that any failure in this situation is centered on the broader issue of maritime safety and infrastructure development.

He said that container ships like the Dali are “a different animal” when it comes to dealing with safety and collisions. "I’m afraid that this is not something that any bridge would be designed to withstand," he said. "We need to make sure this collision does not happen."

"Where’s lessons to be learned here about about how we manage our infrastructure that we need to learn quickly," he added.

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski called the collapse "devastating" and said his "first and most important priority" is to search for and rescue survivors.

"In the days and weeks ahead there will be many questions about the impact of this incident on our families, regional traffic and commerce," he said in a statement released on X. "We will work closely with state and federal partners to make sure we are doing all we can to support everyone impacted."

Olszewski also thanked first responders and called on the Baltimore community to use the tragedy as an opportunity to come together.

Maryland governor: 'We are Baltimore strong'

Moore appeared to try to motivate and reassure Marylanders shortly after addressing reporters for the first time since the collapse.

"In the face of danger, we hold out. In the face of heartbreak, we come together, and we come back stronger," Moore wrote on X. "That is what we’ve always done. That’s what we will continue to do."

The governor — who was elected in 2022 — also commended first responders and commended what he described as quick coordination among local, state and federal government agencies.

"Our administration is working closely with leaders at all levels of government and society to respond to this crisis," Moore wrote. "Not just by addressing the immediate aftermath, but also by building a state that is more resilient and more safe."

Vehicles were stopped from getting onto the bridge after collapse, saving lives, Maryland governor says

Between the mayday call and the collapse of the Key Bridge, officials were able to stop the flow of traffic from continuing onto the collapsed bridge, Moore told reporters this morning.

He warned that the investigation is still ongoing and they don't have full details, but that the response may have prevented more casualties. Six people were unaccounted for and two had been rescued, according to authorities.

"Many of the vehicles were stopped before they got onto the bridge, which saved lives," Moore said.

'We stand ready to support Baltimore,' D.C. mayor says

Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser offered prayers for “all those impacted by the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.”

University of Maryland hospital said it received one patient following collapse

The University of Maryland Medical Center received a patient at its trauma center following the collapse, Michael Schwartzberg, a spokesperson for the hospital, said in a statement.

He did not disclose the patient's condition, but added that the person has already been discharged.

'Our state is in shock': Maryland governor says no credible evidence of terror attack

The preliminary investigation of the Key Bridge collapse points to an accident, and there is no credible evidence of a terror attack, Moore told reporters in a briefing.

"This morning, our state is in shock," he said, adding that the response teams are doing everything in their power to rescue and recover victims of the collapse. "To the victims of this tragedy and their loved ones: All of our hearts are broken," he said.

The FBI in Baltimore also said there was "no specific and credible information to suggest any ties to terrorism at this time." The investigation is ongoing, the FBI said on X.

Brawner Builders confirms it had a crew on Key Bridge at time of collapse

A representative from Brawner Builders Inc. told NBC News that the company had a construction crew on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed.

The company declined to give further details, including how many employees were working at the time of the crash or are still missing.

Earlier this morning, NBC News spoke with the daughter-in-law of Miguel Luna, a Brawner Builders construction worker who was on the bridge. She declined to be interviewed, but did share that she went to the convenience store closest to the bridge’s road closure after receiving a call about the accident to try to get information. As of this writing, she still has not heard any news about her relative from authorities.

Maryland senator calls collapse 'a terrible tragedy'

Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., today called the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse “a terrible tragedy for our City and our State.”

“I’m praying for those who were on the bridge, and I know there are urgent rescue efforts still underway. I’m thankful for the first responders and emergency crews who are at the scene and are working tirelessly on these efforts,” he said.

Van Hollen said he was heading to Baltimore and is closely monitoring the situation, and has been in touch with the governor and local officials.

“We are quickly working to address this situation, and I know, as always, Baltimore will come together, united to face this tragedy.”

A livestream of the Key Bridge collapse early this morning sheds some light on what was happening with the Dali as the ship neared the bridge.

Around 1:24 a.m. ET, the ship's lights turn off but only a minute later come back on. Then 10 seconds later, dark black smoke can be seen billowing from the ship's chimney. At 1:26 a.m., the ship appears to turn and moments later loses its lights again. They come back on half a minute later.

At 1:28 a.m., the ship can be seen making impact with the bridge, followed by the span's complete collapse.

Pride and emotion as Baltimore resident says goodbye to beloved bridge

To the people of Maryland, this was more than just a bridge — it was a symbol of local pride.

"I was always proud because of being from Baltimore, that was one of the proud things that we built that, you know, and it [was] still standing," Chantel Debord, who lives in Baltimore, said in an interview with NBC News.

"And just being able to say that our port is one of the reasons why the East Coast over here gets a lot of their product," she added.

Debord predicted that taxes could rise, plus the region could see a big hit to its fishing industry, as well as longer commutes.

Her reaction was infused with a profound sense of loss. "It’s sad to see that it’s gone. A lot of hard work in there. A lot of Baltimore people have built it, and people from Maryland, and it’s completely gone," she said.

"People lost their lives and now people are gonna lose their livelihoods."

Debord asked her daughter to take pictures as the pair drove over the bridge two weeks ago, not knowing it would be their last time.

'It's just not there': Shocked local responds to collapse of famous bridge

DUNDALK — Local residents have spoken of the shock of seeing such a famous landmark, a mainstay in the area for generations, suddenly vanish from view.

William Reynolds, from Dundalk, Maryland, a town immediately north of the bridge, described hearing a sound "like a tractor trailer hitting the wall" this morning and came to see it for himself at 5:30 a.m. He lives a 2-minute walk away, off the first exit after the bridge.

"It’s literally at the end of the street, you see it coming home every day, pouring into your neighborhood, and now it’s just not there," he told NBC News.

"My parents are on the other side of that bridge, you know, everybody that you know comes back and forth over that bridge even late at night or early in the morning," he said.

After the immediate shock, Reynolds' thoughts soon turned to increased driving times of 45 minutes or more that drivers will face going through the congested city or using the busy I-95 to complete what until early this morning was a simple journey.

"It’s just not there — like the video is real, like, it’s not there," he said.

Reconstruction 'could cost 10 times more' than the $60 million build price, leading British engineer says

Henry Austin

Reconstruction of the Key Bridge could cost over 10 times more than the $60 million it cost to construct it in 1977, a leading British engineer told NBC News today.

David MacKenzie, senior director of COWI, a British engineering and architecture consultancy firm, said the bridge could be reconstructed in two years “if people get their skates on.”

“It has to be built quickly because of the pressure on commuter traffic, so procurement will have to be shortcut, so it will be a very expensive rebuild,” added MacKenzie, a long span bridge engineer.

He said that “there was nothing unusual about the bridge,” before it collapsed and there “was some ship impact protection in the form of big concrete obstacles. But the ship which crashed into the bridge has “somehow got past those,” he said.

Container ships when the bridge was built in 1977 “were a lot smaller than they are now,” he said, adding that a risk assessment should have picked up on the dangers posed by modern vessels.

People would expect the new bridge “to be more robust,” he added.

It would likely take a matter of weeks to clean up the debris, he said, adding that the larger pieces would probably be blown up into smaller pieces and then collected by a crane ship.

Ship's managing company says all 22 crew members accounted for

The managing company of the ship that collided with the Key Bridge this morning said that all 22 crew members on board, including two pilots, have been accounted for and there were no reports of any injuries.

In a statement to NBC News, Synergy Marine Group said the owners and managers of the Dali container ship, which was bound for Sri Lanka, were fully cooperating with federal and state government agencies.

The company added that the exact cause of the incident is yet to be determined.

Bridge collapse an 'unthinkable tragedy,' mayor says as workers' fate remains unknown

As loved ones of workers believed to have been on the bridge during the collapse gathered nearby earlier today, there was still no official confirmation of their fate.

"We were being told there were workers on the bridge, we have yet to confirm that," Baltimore City Fire Department Chief James Wallace told reporters this morning.

At the same news conference, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott called the incident "an unthinkable tragedy."

White House is monitoring bridge collapse

The White House is monitoring the bridge collapse and is in touch with the Maryland governor and the Baltimore mayor to offer federal assistance, a White House official told NBC News.

The official also said there does not appear to be any evidence that the collapse is the result of "nefarious intent."

"Our hearts go out to the families of those who remain missing as a result of this horrific incident," the official said.

Sonar detects vehicles submerged in the water after bridge collapse, fire chief says

Sonar has been used to detect the presence of vehicles submerged in the water after the bridge collapse this morning, but emergency crews don’t have a count of exactly how many yet, Baltimore City Fire Department Chief James Wallace said in his briefing with reporters.

He said there were likely multiple people on the bridge at the time of the collapse, and as a result, likely multiple people in the water.

Baltimore Fire Department Chief James Wallace

Crews are still very much in an active search and rescue stage, Wallace added, and will continue to be for some time, searching both above and below water, as well as on the deck of the ship that hit the bridge.

The crews are using different types of sonar capabilities, underwater drones and infrared technology, he said.

Search underway for at least 7 people after bridge collapse, fire chief says

Rescue teams are looking for at least seven people after the Key Bridge collapse, Baltimore City Fire Department Chief James Wallace has said in a briefing with reporters.

How to travel around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore: A look at the traffic impact and alternate routes

By Rohan Mattu

Updated on: March 26, 2024 / 3:56 PM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE -- The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday  led to a major traffic impact for the region and cutting off a major artery into and out of the port city.

A bridge column was hit by a large container ship around 1:30 a.m., sending bridge workers and vehicles into the Patapsco River.

Alternate routes after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

Maryland transit authorities quickly put detours in place for those traveling through Dundalk or the Curtis Bay/Hawkins Point side of the bridge. The estimated 31,000 who travel the bridge every day will need to find a new route for the foreseeable future.

Alternate routes to cross the harbor are through I-95 and I-895 with the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-95) and Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-895).

10.jpg

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, a key waterway that along with the Port of Baltimore serves as a hub for East Coast shipping.

The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor and the final link in Interstate 695, known in the region as the Baltimore Beltway, which links Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The bridge was built after the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel reached capacity and experienced heavy congestion almost daily, according to the MDTA.

Tractor-trailer inspections

Tractor-trailers that now have clearance to use the tunnels will need to be checked for hazardous materials, which are not permitted in tunnels, and that could further hold up traffic.

The MDTA says vehicles carrying bottled propane gas over 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895).

Any vehicles transporting hazardous materials should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, officials said.

Authorities in Massachusetts offered their support to the state of Maryland after a nearly 1,000-foot-long container ship lost power and plowed into a vital Baltimore bridge early Tuesday, causing a devastating collapse in a matter of seconds.

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey called the collision at the Francis Scott Key Bridge “heartbreaking” and said her thoughts were with the victims and survivors. She also sought to calm public concerns that a similar disaster could occur in the Bay State.

“Massachusetts does not have the same kind of cargo traffic that they have through the Port of Baltimore,” and many of the cargo ships arriving in Massachusetts do not pass under bridges, Healey said on GBH News’ “Boston Public Radio” Tuesday morning.

The Port of Baltimore was the 17th largest port in the nation in 2021, ranked by total tons of cargo, according to the federal Bureau of Transportation Statistics . Boston ranked 40th.

From 1960 to 2015, there were 35 major bridge collapses worldwide after ships or barge collisions, according to a 2018 report by the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure.

About half of the collapses occurred in the United States.

Around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, the cargo ship Dali issued a mayday call as it approached Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, alerting authorities that it had lost power, according to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.

But the ship was still barreling toward the bridge at “a very, very rapid speed,” Moore said, according to the Associated Press. The vessel struck one of the 1.6-mile bridge’s supports, causing an immediate collapse.

Videos of the collision circulated widely on Tuesday.

A construction crew was repairing potholes on the bridge at the time, the Associated Press reported. Two members of the team were rescued from the water, but another six people were still missing as of Tuesday afternoon.
