Pastor Shirley Caesar, The Queen of Gospel, says Raleigh concert will be 'off the chain'

You may recognize some of the big names in gospel music – Kirk Franklin, Yolanda Adams and Marvin Sapp. But hands down, the Queen of Gospel music is Pastor Shirley Caesar.

Caesar, a native of Durham, North Carolina, is known for keeping traditional, African American gospel music alive. She spent the early part of her career singing with The Caravans. As a solo artist, Caesar has won 12 Grammy Awards, 18 Dove Awards, and 14 Stellar Awards, presented by the Stellar Awards Gospel Music Academy.

“I started singing when I was three or four and I’ve been doing it ever since,” said Caesar, who also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and has sung for U.S. presidents going back to Jimmy Carter. In 2015, she sang for Barack and Michelle Obama at the White House.

“Over the years we have had the quintessential sounds of America fill this room, from Jazz to Motown to Blues to Country,” said Barack Obama at the time. “So it is fitting that tonight, we honor the music that influenced all those genres. Gospel.”

Today, the 83-year-old sounds as bodacious and vibrant as she did on some of her most well-known songs, like her 1975 version of “No Charge.” “Hold My Mule” from her “Live in Chicago” album, remained number one on Billboard’s gospel chart for 52 weeks.

Caesar will likely sing her popular Mother’s Day song, “No Charge,” at Thursday's concert at The Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh. It is one of the biggest shows for Caesar and the Caesar Singers since the start of the pandemic. A choir from Shaw University, her alma mater, is also expected to perform.

“It’s going to be off the chain, girl!” said Caesar, as she listed the songs she will perform. “I am going to sing 'I Remember Mama' and 'Take Your Knee Off My Neck.’ We are just going to let go and let God have the right-a-way.”

Caesar said “Take Your Knee Off My Neck” is in remembrance of George Floyd, the Black man was killed in 2020 by a white police officer who held his knee on Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes.

“This boy lost his life. Well, I’m going to sing that,” Caesar said.

Caesar, is also known as, Shirley Caesar Williams. Her late husband, Bishop Harold Ivory Williams, died in 2014. The couple co-pastored Mount Calvary Word of Faith Church in Raleigh for more than 30 years. Caesar says her dream is to continue building on the 53.5 acres of property to include affordable housing, a performing arts center, and even a grocery store.

“A Calvary City,” said Caesar. “That’s my dream.”

Early in the pandemic, Caesar recorded her sermons and aired them on YouTube. She also recorded a concert for NPR’s Tiny Desk “Black History Month” series. Caesar is celebrated for the way she intertwines her songs and preaching called “sermonettes.”

“You may have had some heartaches and some pain, but you made it,” said Caesar. “It’s all about on the other side of the comma. I went through, comma, but made it. Hello!”

Following a teaser on socials that ignited fervent excitement among fans, the legendary groups XSCAPE and SWV have reunited for The Queens of R&B Tour with support from MÝA , Total , and 702 . The Queens Of R&B Tour is a testament to the power of what can be accomplished when women come together with respect, admiration and undeniable talent. It is a celebration of passion, power, resilience and unstoppable ability to exceed expectations. The highly anticipated tour will be an unforgettable experience filled with timeless R&B music and stellar performances that are set to captivate audiences across 30 cities nationwide.

Produced by Monami Entertainment and Live Nation and represented by Seth Shomes through Day After Day Productions (DADP) the tour will kick off on June 27th in Concord, CA, at the Toyota Pavilion at Concord and continue its journey across the country, making stops at prestigious venues such as Madison Square Garden in New York City and the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. Xscape and SWV Announce ‘Queens of R&B Tour’ Dates

After much anticipation, legendary R&B groups Xscape and SWV have announced their co-headlining The Queens of R&B Tour.

The two groups will be joined by fellow ’90s R&B acts Mýa , Total, and 702 as special guests. 

The North American tour, produced by Monami Entertainment and Live Nation, begins Jun 27 at Toyota Pavilion in Concord, California.

From there, they will make stops in Las Vegas, Dallas, Tampa, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and St. Louis, before concluding Aug. 18 at Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

Scott-Young continues, “702, Total, Mýa, SWV, and Xscape have all weathered storms and are still here and better than ever! We are so excited to bring the fans an incredible and undeniable performance experience that truly celebrates R&B music.”

Presale tickets will be available starting Tuesday, March 26. Tickets go on sale to the general public this Friday, March 29, at 10 a.m. local time.

Xscape and SWV’s tour is titled after their Queens of R&B  reality series , which aired on Bravo in 2023. The six-episode, limited series took viewers on a tumultuous journey through the inner workings of putting together a live concert — plus a lot more.

In the show, there were talks about possibly doing a co-headlining tour. However, there were disagreements about logistics, including who would open and close the show. Given the new tour announcement, it looks like both parties have come to an agreement for the greater good of R&B.

Last summer, SWV joined Jodeci and Dru Hill on the Summer Block Party Tour .

The Queens Of R&B Tour is produced by Monami Entertainment and Live Nation and represented by Seth Shomes through Day After Day Productions (DADP), per the news release.

“The highly anticipated tour will be an unforgettable experience filled with timeless R&B music and stellar performances that are set to captivate audiences across 30 cities nationwide,” the release states. 

The Queens Of R&B Tour will kick off on June 27th in Concord, CA, at the Toyota Pavilion at Concord, making stops at Madison Square Garden in New York City and the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. See the complete list of cities below.

LTA reveals plans for new Queen’s Club women’s tournament from 2025

• New tournament would take place week before men’s event
• LTA confident quality of grass courts makes two events viable

The Lawn Tennis Association is in discussions to bring women’s tennis back to the Queen’s Club in Barons Court, west London, for the first time since 1973 with a new high-profile event at the beginning of the grass-court season.

A new women’s tournament at Queen’s would take place a week before the men’s event begins and a week after Roland Garros. Since Queen’s is a relatively small club, it has neither a sufficient number of courts or space in its clubhouse to accommodate the number of players that would be on-site for a joint men’s and women’s event in the same week.

Discussions are ongoing between the LTA , the WTA and ATP about the potential move, with the main focus of those talks being the potential quality of the grass courts during the ATP event. The LTA is convinced that it can provide the men’s event with high quality grass courts even if a WTA event precedes it at the venue.

“We’ve got high confidence and we’ve got significant evidence from the All England Club as to how grass courts wear over a two-week period,” said Scott Lloyd, the chief executive of the LTA. “We’ve analysed all of the data; all of the weather conditions, the density of the soil, you name it, the wear on the ‘T’ [the middle of the service line] and baseline, with the view to try to make sure that we can provide the tours with confidence that the courts will be as good as they always are throughout that period. Obviously at Wimbledon you’ve got five-set matches, you’ve actually got more play on those courts over the course of the first week.”

The LTA’s current WTA 500 tournament is at Eastbourne, which takes place the week before Wimbledon and has built a reputation for attracting both strong players and crowds. Should the Queen’s women’s event become a reality, Eastbourne would be downgraded to a WTA 250 event. This would have significant repercussions for the tournament since the WTA now significantly restricts the number of WTA 250 events that top-10 players can compete in. Last year, seven of the top 10 players entered Eastbourne.

While there are some figures within the sport that think there should be more geographical diversity in ­Britain’s biggest tennis events, the LTA believes a significant ­standalone women’s event in the capital at such an iconic venue and in the first week of the grass-court season would elevate the profile of women’s tennis in the country.

“The reality of that location [Eastbourne] is commercially limited to some degree,” said Lloyd. “We just think that having a WTA 500 in week one of a three-week gap straight after Roland Garros would raise the profile of top-level tennis in that period, straight after the clay-court season.

Andy Murray avoids surgery on injured ankle

Andy Murray will not have surgery on an ankle injury and his rehabilitation is progressing enough for him to think about a return to practice again soon.

The 36-year-old ruptured ligaments at last month's Miami Open but he is now out of his protective boot.

A spokesperson from Murray's team said the former world No 1's "rehab is going well and he is hoping to start hitting again on court soon" but added that "he doesn't have a date yet for returning to competition".

Murray was injured late on in his third-round defeat by Tomas Machac at the Miami Open on 24 March. It is unclear if he will be fit for Wimbledon, which gets under way on 1 July, while the Olympic Games in Paris – which the two-time gold medallist said he would like to play at – starts on 26 July.

“Given we invest in that temporary infrastructure for Queen’s each year, the ability to leverage it for a second week, given that we are investing in it in any event, is an opportunity. And we think that we will be successful in selling out and giving the women’s event that level of visibility, which is greater.”

“It’s not about looking to concentrate our tournaments in London, so to speak. We still absolutely support our other venues throughout that calendar as the way we always have done, and indeed as you see us doing with Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup, whether it’s Glasgow, Manchester or Coventry.”

With the prospect of the potential Premier Tour completely reshaping the calendar, the LTA is also concerned with ensuring that, in the event of a revamped schedule, the pre-Wimbledon tournament would be held in Britain.

While the Queen’s Club would not be big enough to host the 96-draw mixed events being proposed in the Premier Tour, the LTA is currently assessing the ability to scale-up ­infrastructure at its other tour events and their grass-court technology research projects alongside the All England Club could also provide a possible solution should they be charged with hosting a significant mixed event before Wimbledon in the future.
