Merritt’s roger sloan sees return to pga tour as a product of diligent work.

Roger Sloan and his team sat down earlier this year and re-examined his entire process as a golfer. How he practices, his nutrition, everything. Their goal was to make the 36-year-old from Merritt the best player that he could be.

Getting promoted back to the PGA Tour on Sunday, the top level of men’s professional golf, was just a bonus to that evolution.

“We really thoroughly defined what our identity as a player is, what I need to be doing to get better every single year,” said Sloan on Thursday, “We committed ourselves to what that process looks like.

“It’s not just a process of getting back to the PGA Tour. It’s a process of how do we get Roger Sloan to play his best golf all the time.”

Sloan made a clutch par save on the 18th hole in the final round of the Korn Ferry Tour Championship at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Ind., on Sunday. He finished that tournament in a tie for 10th, which moved him up to No. 29 on the second-tier tour’s points list and earned him a PGA Tour card for the 2024 season.

It will be his third go-round on the PGA Tour and Sloan said it’s a testament to how he’s continued to grow as a player.

“It’s a constant evolution and making adjustments,” said Sloan, who missed 19 cuts and withdrew once in 29 events in the 2021-22 season, his last time on the PGA Tour. “My goal always in my career has been to get better every year, just get a little bit better, every year get a little bit better.

“My last year on the PGA Tour, I had just a horrendous year as far as results are concerned. I think it was a byproduct of just getting a little bit lackadaisical in the intentionality of how I practice, how I prepare.”

Sloan feels that he has always been a “quality over quantity” kind of guy, so practicing with more intention means not wasting time or even strokes when at the driving range or on the putting green.

“Whether it’s a putt, a chip, a shot on the driving range, whatever it is, there’s a purpose to that swing,” said Sloan. “We’re recreating an environment that I play in every single day.”

Ben Silverman of Thornhill, Ont., also earned a PGA Tour card, allowing him to move up from the Korn Ferry Tour along with Sloan. They join Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont., Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ont., Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont., Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C., as well as Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., as Canadians with full-time status for 2024.

Because the PGA Tour and its feeder circuits are transitioning to a new schedule that starts in January rather than the autumn, Sloan now has three months to rest, practice, and spend time with his wife and three children.

“I think the new calendar is actually going to be really good for golf,” said Sloan. “It gives guys a little bit more freedom and flexibility at the end of the year to spend some time with their family when you’re on the road for 30, sometimes 32 weeks of the year.

“It’s nice to be home and not have to grind it out for the start of the season just a few weeks away.”

Sloan said he got messages from all of his fellow Canadians after qualifying for the Tour.

“I think it’s just an exciting time to be in Canadian golf,” said Sloan. “I think you’re seeing the byproduct of Mike Weir, little bit of Tiger Woods.

“It’s fun because we all played in some sort of amateur or junior golf together and to see everybody’s career flourish and get to that top level and a lot of these guys having success at the top level, it’s just fun and they’re your friends too.”

Sloan is the only Calgary Flames fan among the Canadians on the PGA Tour.

“There’s a lot of camaraderie among the Canadians, even though they cheer for the wrong hockey team,” he said.

The 2024 PGA Tour season begins in January in Hawaii.

2024 RBC Heritage: Live stream, watch online, TV schedule, channel, tee times, golf coverage, radio

There is no rest for the weary with a signature event on tap this week on the pga tour.

Players make the short trip from Augusta, Georgia, to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, for this week's 2024 RBC Heritage. In total, 69 golfers will tee it up on Harbour Town Golf Links for yet another signature event on the PGA Tour's playing calendar. Unlike the Genesis Invitational or Arnold Palmer Invitational, the RBC Heritage will not feature a 36-hole cut, meaning the entirety of the field will be around for the weekend.

That is music to the ears to those who missed out on the weekend action at the Masters, including Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman. Spieth, the 2022 champion, looks to kickstart his season after a disappointing showing at Augusta National. He is no stranger to bouncing back at the RBC Heritage; he followed a missed cut at the year's first major championship with a win a week later in Hilton Head.

If Spieth is to return to the winner's circle, he will have to go through Scottie Scheffler. The world No. 1 remains in the field for now and aims to collect his fourth trophy in his last five tournaments. Fresh off slipping on his second green jacket, Scheffler has widened the gap between him and the rest of the world and shows no signs of slowing down.

Tommy Fleetwood, Collin Morikawa Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Åberg, Will Zalatoris and Max Homa were among those to perform well at the Masters, and they hope that translates to more of the same. Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay and defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick will look for some form. In total, 26 of the top 30 players in the Official World Golf Rankings are set to play.

Iron Maiden Announce 2023 ‘Future Past Tour’ with a Twist

Iron Maiden are switching things up for their 2023 tour dates

Bruce Dickinson and Iron Maiden have announced the “Future Past” 2023 UK/European tour, and the run has a twist. The trek will feature songs off the band’s 1986 “Somewhere in Time” album, as well as songs from 2021’s “Senjutsu” that have never been performed live.

The tour is set to begin June 13 in Krakow, Poland, and runs through a July 15 stint at the Return of the Gods Festival in Milan, Italy. Additional shows are expected to be added to the roster. Ticket pre-sales start Oct. 11 at 4 a.m. ET (9 a.m. in the UK). General on-sale starts on Oct. 14 at 4 a.m. ET (9 a.m. in the UK).

“Following the release of our latest album, ‘Senjutsu,’ we updated the current Legacy of the Beast Tour a little by opening the show with the first three songs from it, with the Japanese Palace stage set,” Steve Harris said in a statement regarding the new trek. As it doesn’t make a lot of sense to repeat this for a Senjutsu album tour, we thought about other options and we’ve decided to revisit ‘Somewhere in Time’ as that tour didn’t feature in the various retrospective history tours we’ve played over the years.”

Harris added that the original “Somewhere in Time” tour was actually never filmed. He’s excited for the band to play these songs again, as well as new cuts.

“It will also be particularly satisfying to finally get to play some of the more epic tracks on ‘Senjutsu,’ it’s been a long wait!” Harris said. “2023 is going to be an exciting time and we’re really looking forward to seeing everyone again in the UK, Ireland, and around Europe.”

Iron Maiden are currently touring on a North American leg of their “Legacy of the Beast Tour.” Find those tour dates here . The band wraps up the tour on Oct. 27 in Tampa, Florida.

Radiohead Offshoot The Smile Plots 2023 North American Tour

The Smile has announced a new batch of 2023 tour dates around North America in continuing support of its debut album, 2022’s  A Light For Attracting Attention .

The trio featuring  Radiohead bandmates Thom Yorke  and  Jonny Greenwood alongside Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner will grace much larger stages during the 2023 campaign it did during its showcase-style maiden voyage in 2022 , which mostly consisted of mid-size theaters and clubs.

The tour will begin on June 22nd in Mexico City, Mexico before heading north of the border for shows at Austin, TX’s ACL Live at The Moody Theater (6/25), Miami, FL’s  James L. Knight Center (6/29), and St. Augustine, FL’s St. Augustine Amphitheatre (6/30).

The Smile will stay on the road throughout the first half of July for stops at North Charleston, SC’s North Charleston Performing Arts Center (7/2), Asheville, NC’s  Thomas Wolfe Auditorium (7/3), Richmond, VA’s  The National (7/5), New York’s  Forest Hills Stadium (7/7), Philadelphia, PA’s  Franklin Music Hall (7/8), Pittsburgh, PA’s  Stage AE (7/10), Cleveland, OH’s  Agora Ballroom (7/11), and Laval, Quebec’s Place Bell (7/15). Finally, the tour will wrap in Missouri with shows at Kansas City’s Midland Theatre (7/19) and Chesterfield’s  The Factory (7/20).

Iain Matthews luidt met The New Mine (MIG/Suburban) het zesde decennium in van zijn loopbaan als popmusicus. Vijftig jaar geleden had de Brit met zijn band Matthews Southern Comfort een nummer 1-hit met het door Joni Mitchell geschreven Woodstock . Daarna trok hij naar de Verenigde Staten waar hij vele soloplaten afleverde en liedjes schreef voor collega’s. Rond de millenniumwisseling keerde hij terug naar Europa. Tegenwoordig woont hij in Limburg, waar hij met BJ Baartmans, Bart de Win en Eric Devries Matthews Southern Comfort nieuw leven heeft ingeblazen. Met de bezwerende anti-oorlogssong Ethiopia doet de band andermaal een nummer van Joni Mitchell, het is een van de twee covers op deze nieuwe plaat. De meeste liedjes werden door de bandleden samen geschreven. Gedateerd klinkt de folkrock van de voortzetting van deze toch legendarische band geen moment. De Nederlandse bandleden zingen bovendien als de besten en instrumentaal staan ze al helemaal hun mannetje. The Hands Of Time gaat over dromen die nog altijd komen. Op In My Next Life kijkt Matthews bijna reikhalzend uit naar een volgend leven, want met de ervaringen die hij heeft opgedaan zal hij in alle opzichten een beter mens zijn.

Met een muziekcarrière die al langer dan een halve eeuw duurt behoeft Iain Matthews natuurlijk geen verdere introductie. In 2000 vestigde hij zich in Horst, Limburg en is daar sindsdien gelukkig met zijn Nederlandse vrouw en kroost. De titel The New Mine is niet alleen een verwijzing naar het nummer Working in the New Mine , maar ook naar de Limburgse kolenmijnen. Bovendien heeft hij met het hernieuwd leven inblazen van Matthews Southern Comfort een nieuwe muzikale mijn gevonden met zijn drie door de wol geverfde Nederlandse begeleiders. Eric Devries, Bart de Win en coproducer BJ Baartmans hebben ook alle drie hun sporen ruimschoots verdiend in de muziek business. In 2018 leverde dit gezelschap met Like a Radio hun eerste, goed ontvangen, proeve van bekwaamheid af. De solocarrière van Iain kwam na zijn vertrek uit Fairport Convention in een stroomversnelling dankzij de wereldhit die hij had met Joni Mitchell’s Woodstock . De prachtige opener Ethiopia is eveneens van de hand van Mitchell en kan gezien geworden als een eerbetoon en dankjewel aan deze levende legende. Kers op de taart in hun uitvoering is het wonderschone spel, dat Bart uit zijn Wurlitzer tovert. De samenzang op het nieuwe album is om door een ringetje te halen. Normaal verzorgt Iain de lead zang maar in The Hands of Time krijgen ook de andere heren de gelegenheid om voor het voetlicht te treden. Bijzonder opgewekt klinkt het goed in het gehoor liggende Feed It, wat voorzien ismet fraaie lead en achtergrondzang. Tot mijn favorieten behoort het fraaie Patty’s Poetry . Het wordt gezongen door Iain maar blijkt geschreven door BJ, na een onvergetelijk optreden. BJ hierover : “Het nummer gaat over Patty Griffin. Naar aanleiding van een betoverend optreden door enorme hoosbuien heen in Nashville waar ik bij was, doorweekt maar verkocht. Maar het was vooral dat moment en tegen alle omstandigheden in. Ik sprak (jaren) later bassist JD Foster in mijn studio bij een sessie en die bleek die avond zijn debuut bij haar gemaakt te hebben!  Ook hij wist het nog precies: de knetterende spanning (wellicht was het echt link) en zo’n fraaie ontlading op het podium.”. Zo’n impact kan muziek en natuurelementen dus hebben. De uitstekende titelsong blijkt een cover te zijn van de voor mij onbekende singer-songwriter Ed Snodderly. Met uitstekend gitaarspel trouwens. Tot de hoogtepunten reken ik zeker het door Iain geschreven Starvation Box . Volgens Iain is het “fiction based on fact. The old black blues men in the south used to call their guitar their starvation box because they couldn’t make a living playing music. At least, black mans music, which was the blues.”.  Ingetogen en begeleid met warm accordeonspel van Bart is het door Iain en Eric geschreven C’Mon Amigo . Iedereen leverde trouwens composities aan. Het voert te ver om alle composities van dit uitstekende album hier te bespreken. De opnames vonden plaats in Wild Verband (vernoemd naar een metselaarsterm) van BJ. Hier werden trouwens de laatste jaren de nodige fraaie albums opgenomen. Het vorige album was mooi, maar The New Mine bevalt me nog beter.   Theo Volk

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.
