When guests stay at the property, they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff is, and more.

And finally, a review

Best hotel we stayed at in India. This whole place was just amazing. Staff were friendly and very helpful. They were happy to help and were always smiling, even when we had dinner by the lake at 1010pm and they closed at 10.30pm. Hotel was by the lake, the view was breathtaking. Room was amazing to stay in, i didn't want to leave. Was a shame we only did one night stop over, if we knew earlier that there was much more to see in Udaipur, we wouldve stayed here for 2 nights instead of the one, and spent 1 night in Jaipur instead. Will definitely be staying here again if we're back in Udaipur.

After a 6+ hour drive from Jaipur, arriving at this beautiful historic palace hotel was a wonderful treat! We were greeted with a floral lei and immediate help with all our needs. We ended the evening with a delicious dinner (multi-cuisine and Rajasthani traditional) poolside, under the stars. Shiv Nawas was a highlight of our trip, in Udaipur - the Venice of India.

we had a lovely relaxing stay at chunda. breakfast was great, peanut butter on toast in india!! dinner and poolside service fantastic. reception staff were extremely helpful doing everything to help with confirming and sorting train tickets. if i had to say anything bad is that the pools were both freezing (it's their winter!) and the trip into udaipur town takes about 10 minutes by taxi. apart from that this hotel was lovely.

Though my stay was very very comfortable but at the end I have to say something here. As you know my booking was including Breakfast & Dinner for my stay from 20th to 24th August, 2016. But to my surprise on the last day of my stay i..e 23rd August, 2016 night when I went for dinner with my wife I was informed that I will have to pay for the dinner as the same is not complimentary for today. I had to take up my voucher issued by you from down to the Manager on duty and even the duty Manager at the first instance informed that the dinner is not complimentary as only three dinners are included. When I told them that I will have to write to higher authorities including you, I was offered complimentary dinner for 23rd night. At the end of my stay this give me a very bad taste as I did not liked this attitude from every one. This I am writing for your information and taking up with the concerned at Radison so that such things do not happen in future. At the end I would also like to say that otherwise I was fully satisfied with the services and quality of food at the Radisson Blu Udaipur. I would again like to use your as well as Radisson's services in future.

We arrived after almost 24 hours of travel from UK to Udaipur - tired and in need of a shower. We had a lovely welcome and our room was upgraded to a view of the lake, which was lovely. We stayed 2 days and 2 nights and really could not fault the staff in any way. Cheerful, helpful and kind. From the room cleaner to the manager everyone was lovely. The food was really good and the only fault we found really was that our room and bathroom were a bit tired and in need of a bit of redecoration. Wi fi was a bit hit and miss, but we could live with that and would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone going to Udaipur.

Having travelled quite widely throughout India,I had never managed to make it to Udaipur. I managed to finally get here with my 13 year old son and had booked the Leela through Agoda from the UK. The welcome that we received was amazing. Before we had even got off the buggy from the main entrance everybody addressed us by our names. We were greeted with petals from above and a warm welcome at reception. We were introduced to our butler who was to take care of all our requirements ( which he certainly did. The room was excellent affording both a view of the city palace and lake. Everything we could have wished for was provided. The restaurant served excellent food (a mixture of a variety of cultures) and once again the service was impeccable. The hotel also offers a complimentary boat to the other side of the lake, where after a short walk you can gain access to the palace museum. I shall certainly be returning to the Leela ... 3 days is just not long enough to experience the full experience that udaipur has to offer.

.We stayed at Ananta Udaipur for 3 nights. Udaipur was my second stop in my Rajasthan trip, I was a bit apprehensive initially as this is not a popular chain as the Marriott’s, Taj etc. All my fears were gone from the moment I stepped into the resort. It’s a beautiful, well maintained resort with spectacular views of the Aravalli mountains. The resort itself is on a hill. Believe me, you can’t take your eyes off the views and you just won’t get enough. They have cars (serving as buggies) to take you around the resort. The rooms are exactly as in the pictures, spacious, neat, well maintained and large with an open shower space (for those Interested). The surprise was in the evenings where there’s live performance of singers...Bollywood and Rajasthani folk music. Breakfast spread was large and the food options plentiful. The only thing was the price of the food....it was super pricey. The restaurant staff (special mention Devanshu) were very courteous, prompt in service and had the att

The place is worth the money both for the heitage feel as well as the proximity to all major tourist attractions. We upgraded to premium suite thus making our stay even more memorable. I would highly recommend this hotel in Udaipur.

The best thing about this hotel was the rooftop swimming pool. Not many places have this for the price and it has beautiful views over udaipur and provided a cooling break from the midday heat. The staff at the hotel were great and very happy to help or answer questions. Great location with many sights and restaurants just a few mins walk away. Would definitely stay here again.

The hotel and everything is goods, location, food, bar, cleanliness, staff, facilities. If there is any issue the same has been soughed out asap/priority. We recommend travelers to stay at Golden Tulip, Udaipur. My experience with Jaipur was worst & bad with their reception staff whereas in Udaipur it is fantastic. Keep it up Udaipur Team.

As we stayed in Shahapura House in Jaipur is also a heritage hotel and comparison started directly with this Mahendra Prakash heritage hotel in Udaipur this wasn’t as classic as Shahapura House and also looks expensive compared with other hotels during our stay renovations were going on lot of disturbances during the night hours, major complaint is that they switch off entire property corridor common passage lights as well by 9:00 PM being rated as 3 star hotel this wasn’t expected as we return from our dinner from restaurants (as in-house restaurant is not at all good) we need to search for passages light switches to turn them on to reach the rooms with elderly and kids which I find very much uncomfortable and annoying, post discussion with night shift person at reception rude response came from them hence we continued to switch on the lights on our own during our 3 nights stay, only good I found is musician comes every morning and plays santoor near the pool area is pleasant to hear the music in morning hours, overall average stay rooms are small, not all bad experience but okay kind of stay, but much was expected being listed as heritage hotel it’s okay, all The best for them for improvements

I guess this is one of the best 4* hotels in Udaipur. The staff is very friendly, especially Narendra - he is the best!!! We had a large and comfy room, the pool was okay... There needs to be a lot of work done upstairs (painting etc). We only had breakfast, which was good - but no dinner! We can really recommend this cute hotel!

We stayed at Jaiwana Haveli for two nights while in Udaipur and wish we could have stayed longer. Udaipur and Jaiwana were almost a mirage after several long days on the road. We felt comfortable there immediately - dropped our bags in our room and headed up to the rooftop terrace restaurant for a cold kingfisher and some lunch. You can see the whole city from the location right on Lake Pichola, from the City Palace and Jagdish Temple on the left, to the Monsoon Palace high up on a mountain off to the right, which is lit at night and looks as if it is floating in the night sky. The food was quite good and we had several meals up on the roof. Perfect place to look out and plan your day. We had both Indian dishes and more continental style food. The curries, lassi (fruit/yogurt smoothies), and pancakes were all very good. Try the butter naan, chicken curries, paneer palak, jeera rice. The banana chocolate pancake was surprisingly good and more of a french style crepe. Yash, the owner, was very attentive both before our arrival via email, and during our stay. He and his brother were extremely helpful in giving us recommendations for getting around. The desk staff was also fluent in English and quite helpful, giving us a map of Udaipur and orienting us to the layout of the town and important sights. We hadn't booked early enough to get a coveted corner lake view room, but he did a little shuffling and made it happen for one night - amazing views and lots of sun. The second night, we moved to another, non-corner room on the 2nd floor and still had good light and a bit of a lake view. The rooms are simple but clean, with white marble floors and tile bathrooms. It can get a little chilly at night in the winter, but extra heavy blankets were put out in our room and I slept comfortably. Ranks #5 in Udaipur on TripAdvisor, behind only ultra high-end Taj, Oberoi, Leela that cost 10x more. It's a small, hotel so book early if you want the best rooms!

The hotel is new and very comfortable. The rooms were immaculate and what you would expect from a much higher priced hotel. Staff were friendly and food was good. However, the hotel is a long way from the main attractions in town and if you are in Udaipur for the first time as a tourist I'd recommend going for one of the guest houses by the lake instead. Another disappointment was the lack of wifi in the rooms. The hotel staff claimed it was either unavailable or broken - I'd expect better given that we got wifi throughout our stay in India at much more budget places.

We had driven down to Udaipur from Gurgaon. By the time we reached hotel, we are quite tired. The hotel looks nice when you drive in with a decent driveway. We were welcomed with the garlands made of beads and it felt nice to get such a royal treatment. The check-in was prompt and we were taken to our room in about 5 minutes. We had booked the Deluxe Room with the Lake View. The room was nice and big enough for a couple with a young child. The Lakeview was awesome and you could see the Sajjangarh Fort from the room. The room had a couch next to the big window and it can used as a bed for a young child. And now for the Pros of the Hotel - 1. Excellent Location : It is located right next to the Fateh Sagar Lake. The best part of thee hotel is that you could reach Old Udaipur & rest of the city within minutes and nothing is more than 3-4 kilometres away (though I would suggest to avoid taking the car to Old Udaipur and places like City Palace since driving can be difficult in narrow lanes). 2. Friendly Staff & Prompt Service : The staff was pleasant and friendly. The In-Room Dining Service was quick though we just ordered for milk only for our 5 year old daughter. They were also quick in providing first aid when my daughter needed one. 3. Activities to do : The hotel has a Billards Tables, Fitness Centre and a Spa (though we didn't use any of these). For Kids, they have a small play area outside and a Daily puppet show in the evening. They also have Folk Dance at their outdoor Aangan restaurant everyday in the evening (though we didn't attend it). Areas of Improvement 1. Buffet Breakfast : The Buffet Breakfast is good. However, they had very few changes in the menu on a daily basis. Since we stayed there for 3 days, the menu became dull from the 2nd day onwards. 2. No Swimming Pool : This was a big disappointment. However, I would blame this on us since we did not do the research whether the hotel has one or not. We found out about it after we did the booking. We th

Resort is located at not very far place from center of Udaipur. Maintained beautifully with a very good service staff. Behavior of every employee is good. Maintenance of Resort is good even though it's not very new building. Most of the hotels in Udaipur were built long back. I would definitely visit this Resort again and will refer others too.

I got a room in 3k from Agoda including breakfast. The location is very good just 2 km from the major attraction in Udaipur. Hotel staff is fine. The terrace restaurant is very good, and you can just chill. The seating arrangement gives you a feeling of a small private lounge. I would highly recommend it for the budget of 3k.

this is an imposing new hotel in traditional style, perched on a hilltop overlooking the city and lake of udaipur and with absolutely spectacular views in all directions of wooded hills. it was a luxurious end to the rajasthan leg of our holiday in india, which otherwise consisted of stays in characterful moderately priced havelis (the royal heritage in jaipur, the nachana haveli in jaisalmer and the kothi heritage in jodphur – all recommended). we had considered other more famous prestige heritage hotels but many of them seemed obscenely expensive (by western never mind indian standards) and/or to have too frequently disappointed other reviewers. fateh garh though did not disappoint. the views from the terrace all 3 nights we were there were made even more memorable by diwali fireworks across the city, but the public areas are all beautiful and kept spotless. the service throughout the hotel was friendly and very attentive without being overbearing. our “renaissance” room was vast, with a king size bed and a big picture window with amazing view. good food in the restaurant. the spa was excellent. lovely infinity pool (unheated) and a second pool (heated) on a lower terrace. the city sights (which can be seen in a day) are 15-20 minutes away by car, but it is no problem arranging this or a pick up back to the hotel. we would strongly recommend also taking a day trip to the ranakpur temples.

They fail to give us information about breakfast and when we asked for wifi, they only gave us one user/password and it had a data limit. I think this is absurd considering that the hotel is supposed to be a luxury hotel. The hotel is about 20 minutes away by car from Udaipur. Regarding the room, everything was perfect. Big and comfortable bed, clean bathroom with a nice powerful rain shower.

I love this resort too much to stay anywhere else while in Udaipur. The staff is attentive. The decor is breath taking, the three pools are always clean, the rooms are spacious and clean. The food is rightly priced and amazing in taste. I love it.

First of all Thanks to Agoda for best and cheap price. Pros :- 1. I will give a proper 4 star rating for this hotel 2. Spacious, clean and proper vantilation room(recommend to book room no. 18) 3. Talking about location, near to Fateh Sagar lake which is quite better experience as comparison Lake pichola. Auto, cabs are easily available at your doorstep no need to worry 4. Rooms were clean and bed size is big enough for 2 adult Cons :- There is no any negetive point for the hotel as all thing is best from my end. Must recommend to visit terrace in the evening for beautiful lake view and also visit raaj bagh restaurant opposite to hotel. Overall experience regarding hotel and room is too good and recommend to book this property without any confusion.

The hostel is new and clean. All facilities are great and in working order. The water is warm, the beds are comfortable. The breakfast is amazing and very good value for what you pay. The guy who manages the hostel was the best hostel manager I have encountered in India. He truly understands the meaning of customer service. Made sure that any problem I had was resolved and when I got very sick he offered to bring me some medication. His english is also very very good. The owners are also very cool. They were very friendly and made me feel at home. All in all I think this is the best hostel in India. The only con is that agoda doesn't allow for 11/10 reviews or else I would have given it to them. I went to some other hostels in the area and this was the best from every aspect.

My wife and I have traveled quite a bit the last months and can say now that Zostel Udaipur was, hands down, one of the best hostels we've ever stayed -- and one of the reasons why we decided to extend our stay in Udaipur. Dorms are clean and beautifully decorated, staff is extremely helpful, cheerful and kind, there's a great social atmosphere (in February and March they had two amazing British volunteers who organized daily activities that made interaction with fellow travelers easy and natural) and... well... I'd lie if I said the rooftop didn't weigh a lot in our decision to stay more :-) Zostel has definitely THE BEST view of Lake Pichola and the best food and staff at the rooftop restaurant, where we spent most of our stay -- there's a common area at the basement too, but the view was just too good to be missed! Would recommend Zostel to friends and anyone up for having a great time and a comfortable stay in Udaipur :-)

This might be the best hostel I've ever stayed at in my life, and I've been traveling for 2.5 years now. Its beautiful, it's new, the terrace chillout room is awesome, free breakfast, good AC in the room, as always with GoStops hostels they had comfy beds, the staff here was great, the place was clean, they had RO filtered water to refill your water bottles, lots of areas to hang out and sit, you can rent scooters here, it's bright and colorful, it's def got a social vibe due to the hangout area up top, and I have nothing bad to say about this place at all. I've now stayed at 4 GoStops hostels in Rishikesh, Amritsar, Udaipur, and Mumbai and this Udaipur location is 100% the top one. In Udaipur, I had stayed previously in 3 other guesthouses, which were all either more expensive or same price and this GoStops hostel kicks all of their asses as far as comfort, facilities, and quality go. Good wifi throughout the building.

Got an early check in as spare rooms were available. Very homely, family rum b & b. Food was homely, esp aloo paratha. The owner clarified at the time of booking that this was a bread and breakfast and not a typical hotel ( not that we were unaware, but definitely good to hear beforehand from them ,for the less alert ones). Good location, in a quiet lane, not far from Jagdish temple. Bathroom was very clean. There was a free breakfast which we didnt notice at the time of booking, as the room rent was already so cheap. However, they informed us that breakfast was free for our booking. Will stay here again, if i go next time to Udaipur. Stone's throw distance from Lake Pichola.

Manager went above and beyond to make my stay as comfortable as possible. He's extremely dedicated and engaged in the hostel, which makes a huge difference. Breakfast was two pieces of toast and one boiled egg which in my opinion could be improved. Great facilities and rooms... They all come with AC 24/7!!

Superb location just 30secs walk to Ambrai Ghat with unobstructed views to the City Palace and Lake Palace. Rooftop views are even better with a super chill out area. Dorm came with ensuite which was cleaned daily. Wifi is pretty much non existent making it hard to make onward bookings. Staff were friendly to help with booking my bus to Agra. Highly recommended stay - just don't expect wifi!

The hotel is a stone's throw away from Bagore ki Haveli, Gangaur Ghat, a number of cafes, and a host of shops. It's also a five minute walk away from the City Palace. Hence, the location really is convenient for travelers. Cheap, clean, and tourist friendly, the hotel is a hassle free stop.

We had a very plesent stay in this Guest house. The rooms were clean and the stay at center of the market really helped us to access all required. The support people specially Owner Vivek was great; he helped us planning our sight seeing and time to acomodate maximum places to cover. We recomend this as best selection for bedget travellers to Udaipur.

This hotel would have to be one of the best we have stayed in during our 3 months of traveling through India. It  is a family run business by  4 brothers( They told us they're all boss of this hotel! lol.) and their customer service was Outstanding ( especially Mr. Raj was so professional, courteous and helpful). This hotel is also very centrally located,  so you can walk to any places or hot spots between 5 to 20 mins. The room was clean and well maintained and comfortable. The rooftop restaurant was also great. Probably the best part if this hotel is the  rooftop view. The City Palace view from the rooftop restaurant was very beautiful,   especially at night. My husband and I will be recommending this hotel to everyone we know. Highly recommend this hotel to any traveler going to Udaipur!

We stayed for 2 nights at Hotel Meenakshi. The location was good as nearby attractions including the City Palace were close by. In front of the hotel, breakfast options were also available, we loved poha served there. There was a local market nearby where we did some shopping. It is hard to get good non-vegetarian food in Udaipur, luckily we found a place nearby. There is a restaurant named Ulu, around 1.5 kms from this hotel, in front of Hansa Palace. It had good options for us, we tried for both days during our stay.

The family who run the guest house is lovely and always available for anything. We have been a bit unlucky with the weather 'cause it rained for three days in a row and we had to find a restaurant near by; our experience would have been perfect if the guest house provided food too ( home made food). Our check out was really early in the morning cause of the bus and the owner (mama) woke up without any problems. She showed me her tailors works, she prepared us the best masala and made us feel like home. RECOMMENDED

I did have reservations before arriving as hotel was cheaper than what I normally go for in Udaipur but I wanted to be in the heart of the old town of Amritsar and if your looking for a hotel that does that this is it. It is next to all the top attractions in Udaipur: City Palace, Pichola Lake and Bagore Ki Havelli. Also its tucked away so its really quiet, which is a plus as India can be busy and loud. Also the area is safe. Every night I would go to a bar/restaurant and wonder back and never felt unsafe. Lastly I left my wallet in my room on the last day. When I realised and went back they had the wallet with all cash and cards in it. This pretty much summed up the staff the whole time - honest, helpful and kind. I loved this place for: Price, location and staff.

It was really, really great and memorable. This was our (my and my wife's) first visit to Rajasthan, and Padmini Palace was the first place we stayed in.Though we arrived at the hotel at around 3-30 am in the morning. But we had no difficulty in checking in. Everything went well. This hotel is just excellent. Each and every department is awesome and way too efficient in their job. You call up for any service - be it housekeeping , room service, reception, or any other department - just tell them and count till 10. You request will be fulfilled. Sometime we actually counted to see if it's a Ginnie or the hotel staff : ). But jokes apart, the hospitality and the service offered by the hotel staff was just perfect. Each staff member was so humble. I really liked the front office guy - Ravi Dubey. Being the first visit to Udaipur, I was really skeptic about various things - which place to go , parking as I had my own car , and other first timer queries,. But this guy was so humble and helped me with all my queries. The best part was the smile on his face when talking to me. I have been on a lot of trips, and several times I have seen the front office guys just saying yes or no to your point and are just their to complete their duty hours. But Mr. Ravi Dubey, was actually completely different person. He was actually talking to me as if I am his personal guest and not a random traveller . There not much to do in Udaipur, so a good resort or hotel is a must if you want to have a good time in Udaipur. In short, just go for this property to experience an amazing view , hills all around and just next to the hotel, perfect city view, perfect weather as it's in the outskirts and completely surrounded by beautiful hills, and last but definitely not the least, the hospitality and services offered by each and every staff member of the hotel.

I am a big fan of this Indian chain which is the cheaper sibling of the very prestigious Oberoi Group and often share campuses. There is an attention to detail in the decoration, the grounds, and the service in general. The Udaipur hotel while not as good as the one I stayed in Gurgaon, is still an oasis in a noisy very busy small city providing for great relaxation. Our room had a great view of the lake and gardens. The one downside is that when they start cleaning up in the morning you hear everything in the hallway. Other than that - wonderful hotel and a third of the price of the Oberoi (we went over to the Oberoi for dinner one night and I thought the food was better at the Trident - although the surroundings are magnificent.

My fiancé and I stayed 2 nights at Taj Lake Palace. We flew in from New Delhi arrived Udaipur pretty early and checked in at noon. The arrival experience at the Jetty was very welcoming. The private jetty for Lake Palace guests is remarkable. It has a nice rest area, and the boats tag always available for transfer to the lake palace. Everyone is so courteous and trying to providing best service possible. Check in was done at the jetty and in no time we were transferred to the hotel. On arrival we we greeted with rose petals showered down as we get off the boat and walk to wards the entrance. We were indeed treated as royals. Check in was super speed and the staff were very welcoming. Rahul the GM made sure everything was perfect and made us very comfortable. Great news when we learnt we were upgraded to a suite, best news and I just it better. The room was decorated with rose and yellow flowers arranged from the door to the living room. The brought us a cake and sweets for us. So touched by Taj's hospitality and service. In the evening, we had dinner at the hotel, indian food of course, enjoyed the service and hospitality. Next day we went for a day tour and some shopping. Transfer both ways were excellent. No time is lost... Breakfast experience was outstanding. The staff takes a lot of initiative and remembers what we liked and ordered them for us the next day. Awesome!!!!. We really enjoyed Taj Lake Palace. It has a very deep impression for us and we hope to visit again. It's truly a paradise..in every sense of the word. I would like to thank the team at Lake Palace of taking care of us so well. I must say that in the 10 days we were in India, Taj Lake Palace experience was the best, nothing came close.

After having been travelling India for a bit me and my partner decided to treat ourselves to some luxury which is hard to find in India - great customer service and tranquility. Great customer service throughout, but you do have to wait a bit for your cocktails to arrive at the pool as hotel is quite big and it takes time to walk from the bar. Lovely breakfast and food at the restaurant, very comfortable beds and good choice of spa treatments. We have enjoyed our stay tremendously and when visiting Udaipur will definitely stay there again.

Let me start the review by saying that the staff tried doing the best they could, but the resort fell way short of expectations. On the first night, there was no hot water in the taps, the flush wasn't working, and the room had a smell. While they were fixed, they really should have been checked before hand. They provided an immersion rod for the hot water with the promise that it would work from the next day. However, next morning I woke up to no water. And the water situation remained for the next 2 days. The staff told me it was a broken pipe, and there was nothing they could do about it. So here we were, paying a good amount of money to be in a resort where we had no water - the resort never thought it might help to actually compensate/refund us for having to holiday without running water. Other points: the resort is away from Udaipur and in the hills, so don't expect phone reception. The Wifi is satisfactory, but I had to work outside the room to catch it at times.

Nice place for tourist and some site seeing ! enjoy your holidays for 2 night 3 days & carry on to chittorgarh ! keep it relaxed !

Be prepared for steep hills and steps- great shopping in the bazaars- the city palace is tout free so a very relaxing time can be spent drinking coffee and viewing the lake.

We enjoyed the boat ride

Small city easy to visit walking around, nice and relaxing view of the lake. Many shop of handcraft good are available with good quality products.

Udaipur is a Royal city, where romance is in the air. The lakes of the city provide a serene environment for relaxation.

Beautiful city with great history and culture and good entertainment and food Peaceful yet not boring; Friendly people;

This city is full of lakes and old forts City Palace is the place you must go Some lake view restaurant you also can't miss

Udaipur has to be one of the great attactions in Rajahstan - and there are many. The Grand Palace, the Lake, the old city and food are just fantastic.

Highly recommended, but stay near the Lake to make the most of it.

A wonderful city with it all from palaces, to lakes, to Shilpgram ethnic park; to gardens with a zoo.

It is one city that you should include in your trip to this part of India. The lake and the beautiful hotels in and around it would make your trip worthwhile.

There is also a lot of local handicrafts within easy reach in shops nearby.

Udaipur is a nice city of Rajasthan. You need 2 days stay here to cover the main city, rest of your extra days can be utilied to visit nearby places like Shreenathji, Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh, Mt.

Abu etc. Mostly days are hot, but morning & evenings are pleasant. I am happy with my tour plan, which was self made. I was in Udaipur for 3 nights in 3 different hotels, Hotel Ram Pratap was at the top amongst all 3, I tried.

It is one of the best cities of Rajasthan. It is situated on bank of lakes Pichola, Fatehsagar etc. you can go for visit from late july till november.

It is famous for valour of rajput king Maharana Pratap.

Based around the lake, and fairly small, Udaipur is much more relaxed and peaceful than many places in Rajasthan.

There are some great places by the water to sit and relax, eat a slow lunch, and have a couple of drinks. India generally is still getting to grips with tourism, but here they seem more experienced than many places in catering to the needs of foreign travellers. The settings by the lake are stunning, and this would make a wonderful location for a honeymoon or a romantic get-away.

Best real palace no doubt! Lake superb. Must eat at Jagmandir Island restaurant. Great value even better venue and senic!

Best place baadi lake. Best place for lunch and dinner Ambrai. Best Local dish Laal Maas served at Jaiwana Haveli.

Its the place where you should just relax and take it easy. Worst time to visit is from April to Sep. Best time is Oct Nov and Feb. Its very hot during summers and not advised to be there Overall its a lovely romantic place

Udaipur was definitely the highlight of my recent trip around Rajasthan. The minute I arrived at the railway station, I felt the relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The area by the lake, especially the view of the Lake Palace at sunset, is ridiculously beautiful. Lots to see, I didn't even get around to the City Palace museum, preferring to get happily lost in the maze of tiny, fascinating streets.

It is a wonderful historic city with lots of cultural and historic attractions around, rich in fold music & dance, history, palaces, folk arts and crafts and beautiful lakes.

Compared to other Indian cities it is still small and unspoilt without much pollution, crowding or other problems. It has retained its old charm of a Rajasthani small city with long traditions and proud history. Absolutely aplace to visit and revisit. It has world class hotels and spas, very relaxing and enjoyable.

It is a nice city to visit. It has a nice lake and the palace it is worth to visit. It is more organized than other places in India

It is a city of lakes palaces and gardens. Lovely surroundings with good friendly people. Good food also.

Typical Rajasthani food at its best.

Udaipur was one of the nicer cities we visited in our trip to India. It's far less cluttered than Delhi and Jaipur, air is better (almost clean) and the people are nice.

I recommend finding accommodation right at the center, next to one of the lakes. There are great hotels there, within walking distance to main attractions. There are great things to do in the day and at night and it's good to be near them. Food is also good at many local restaurants in the center. We visited at the fall, which made everything enjoyable. I suspect that summer temperatures can be very high, making travel difficult.

My experience is that Udaipur has lost its charm. The autorikshaw's run without meter and want an exhorbitant amount.

The city palace which is the primary tourist place is nothing great! There is nothing to see in Udaipur. Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Jaisamand, Jaipur are better than Udaipur.

Udaipur is a great place to spend a few days relaxing with a bit of sightseeing and shopping thrown in.

visit the cafes for cheap and cheerful food, city palace is a great landmark but the inside leaves much to be desired.

Udaipur is truely said to be "city of lake" and it has very panaromic view . although being in Rajasthan it has very green belt.

and only hill station of Rajasthan is Mount Abu which is just 2.5 hrs away from udaipur.

It was the most beautifull city we've visited in India. Very clean, romantic. I would really recommend it to everybody visiting this area.

Udaipur is a relief after places like Agra and Delhi. It's laidback, beautiful to look at and enchanting to wander around aimlessly.

There is enough active things to do (hiking, Horseriding, bike riding) that you can mix in with any sightseeing to avoid the monotony that I find of the latter alone.

Fantastic holiday destination as the place is naturally beautiful with lot of historical importance to Indian history.

You will start loving the place as soon as you arrive.

It is one of my favorite cities in India. Udaipur is an easy town to get around, even if you do get lost in the narrow inner lanes of the old city.

People are friendly and helpful. If you get away from the frenetic shopping around the City Palace, there are deals to be had. Weather is lovely except for May, June, July.

I think the town can be cleaned up and that would raise the opportunity to have more tourists stay longer.

Because you can include that in the tour then.

Very cute city. Surprisingly polluted though, because so much motorbikes at the main tourist street.

Udaipur is a great place, with beautiful lakes and wonderful people. I was specially attracted by Chittorgarh, and Haldighati, about which I have read so much from my early childhood, and always wanted to visit.

My wife is a postgraduate in History, and I, a scientist by profession have always been charmed by the history of Rajasthan. I am now 60 +,have been in a number of places in India and abroad I am glad I could at last visit Rajasthan and Udaipur in particular.

Your Trip to Udaipur: The Complete Guide

rajasthan tourism hotel in udaipur

No longer in the shadow of the iconic UNESCO World Heritage City of Jaipur, Udaipur has evolved into a heritage hot-spot and top tourist destination in Rajasthan . This isn't surprising, as the romantic city of lakes and palaces invariably delights visitors with its enchanting setting and evocative regal history. The Mewar royal family has done much to preserve and make accessible the legacy of their ancestors, who founded Udaipur in the 16th century . In addition to this stately splendor, Udaipur is a laid-back city that offers great value for all types of travelers. The 1983 James Bond movie "Octopussy" was filmed there, too!

Find out all you need to know in this Udaipur guide.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit: Udaipur's location at the southern end of the Aravalli Range separates it from the Thar Desert, producing a semi-arid local steppe climate that's not too extreme. The cool, dry, and sunny months from October to February are most comfortable and draw the crowds. Nights do get nippy during the middle of winter, but the days are gloriously warm, with temperatures of up to 79 degrees Fahrenheit (26 degrees Celsius). If you'd prefer a more peaceful experience, the September shoulder season after the monsoon could be perfect. Only visit Udaipur during April and May if you don't mind temperatures touching 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) or more. Read more about the weather and climate in Udaipur and the best time to visit Udaipur .
  • Language: Rajasthani (Mewari local dialect), Hindi and English.
  • Currency: Indian rupee.
  • Time Zone: UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) +5.5 hours, also known as Indian Standard Time. Udaipur does not have daylight saving time.
  • Getting Around: Udaipur's narrow lanes are ideally explored on foot, so do bring comfortable walking shoes. Auto rickshaws are readily available and should cost under 100 rupees ($1.40) to go anywhere within the city. App-based cabs Uber and Ola are the most convenient way of reaching attractions on the city's outskirts. They're usually cheaper and less-hassle than auto rickshaws.
  • Travel Tip: If hot weather isn't an issue, the Gangaur festival takes place in April and is the biggest festival of the year in Udaipur. The three-day Mewar festival, dedicated to showcasing the region's culture, is held alongside it and is a fun experience.

Things to Do

Udaipur has a compact but captivating collection of museums that showcase the region's culture and heritage. Simply wandering the streets and soaking up the atmosphere are among the most enjoyable things to do in Udaipur. Those who are feeling energetic can cycle around the city, hike in the hills, or even go horseback riding. Cooking classes are a hit with foreigners. Udaipur is renowned for its unique miniature paintings, and they make great gifts. You can even paint your own. Many tourists love shopping in Udaipur because of the abundance of irresistible handicrafts. Do allow some time for a day trip or two into the surrounding countryside—there are some interesting options, including ancient forts and temples.

  • The City Palace Complex , including the City Palace Museum, is Udaipur's star attraction. More than one million people visit it each year . It's the largest palace complex in Rajasthan and provides incredible insight into the life of the royal family.
  • A boat ride on Lake Pichola is magical at sunset! (Sit on the right side of the boat for the best vista).
  • A heritage walking tour will immerse you in Udaipur's old city off the tourist trail.

Our detailed articles about the best things to do in Udaipur and the top places to visit near Udaipur have more information.

What to Eat and Drink

Distinct from predominantly vegetarian Rajasthani cuisine, the local Mewari cuisine in Udaipur features an assortment of rustic meat dishes, as the royal rulers of the region were avid hunters. Laal Maas (spicy red mutton curry) is the most famous dish. Fresh fish from the region's lakes is part of the cuisine too. You may even find rabbit on some restaurant menus!

Vegetarians can try regional specialties such as Gatte ki Sabji (steamed chickpea flour dumplings in a tangy tomato and yogurt curry) and Dal Bati Churma. Udaipur is also renowned for its deep-fried snacks such as Mirchi Bada (large green chilies stuffed with spices and potato) and Kachori (pastry discs with spiced lentils or onion fillings). For sweet tooths, there are desserts, including Malpua (pancakes fried and dunked in sugar syrup) and Ghevar (a cake-like dish soaked in sugar syrup and ghee).

The few bars that Udaipur does have close by midnight. So, if you're looking for nightlife in Udaipur , you'll be disappointed. Drinks are best enjoyed under the stars at a rooftop with a mesmerizing backdrop of the city and Lake Pichola.

Explore our pick of foods to try in Udaipur and the best restaurants in Udaipur .

Where to Stay

The majority of Udaipur's accommodations are situated on Lake Pichola's east side, in the Lal Ghat, Gangaur Ghat, and Chandpole areas bordering the lake. This is on the same side of the lake as the City Palace and is in the heart of the old part of the city, so you'll have easy access to the main attractions. There are all kinds of properties, including boutique heritage hotels, guesthouses, and backpacker hostels. Many offer lake views. Read more about the various neighborhoods in Udaipur .

Two authentic palace hotels are set within the City Palace Complex itself—the Taj Fateh Prakash Palace Hotel and Shiv Niwas Palace Hotel (which features in "Octopussy"). The ethereal Taj Lake Palace Hotel, which appears to float right in the middle of Lake Pichola, is the top choice, though.

Across the bridge, the northwest side of Lake Pichola around Hanuman Ghat is quieter, but hotels proliferate. The benefit of staying on this side of the lake is that you'll be able to see the City Palace across the lake. Luxury five-star hotels such as The Leela and the Oberoi Udaivilas also front this side of the lake, albeit in more isolated spots.

See our recommendations for the best hotels in Udaipur.

Getting There

Udaipur's airport is 30 to 40 minutes east of the city. It's a small domestic airport that receives flights from Jaipur and major cities in India, including Delhi and Mumbai.

Udaipur is situated about five hours south of Jodhpur , and there are several attractions (such as Kumbhalgarh fort and Ranakpur Jain temple) to check out on the way. Therefore, it makes sense to hire a car and driver to travel between these two cities if you're exploring Rajasthan. You can also drive from Jaipur to Udaipur, or vice-versa, and spend a night in Bundi to break the journey. (Bundi is about five hours from Udaipur and four hours from Jaipur).

Indian Railways trains stop at Udaipur, although services are quite limited. The railway station, Udaipur City, is only five minutes east of the City Palace area. Its station code is UDZ.

Culture and Customs

Tipping isn't compulsory in India, although it's expected if you're happy with the service. A 10 to 15 percent tip is sufficient at a restaurant, or simply round the bill up on smaller amounts. Flag down the waiter to get your bill. Hotels will commonly have a tip box where you can leave gratuities for the staff. Tour guides can be tipped a couple of hundred rupees per day, and around 400 rupees for drivers.

Being a popular tourist destination, Udaipur has its share of scams to watch out for. Beware of anyone who tells you a royal wedding is about to take place (they'll lead you to a tailor's shop to get an overpriced outfit made for the non-existent occasion), or that they're involved in exhibiting special embroidery or other handicrafts (which they'll end up trying to sell you).

Dress standards are fairly conservative in Udaipur. It's respectful to keep your shoulders and legs below the knee covered. Ladies, if it's hot and you want to wear a sleeveless top or dress, solve the problem by throwing on a shawl when necessary.

Money Saving Tips

  • Hotel rates fall by 50 to 75 percent from March until the end of September, during the summer and monsoon season. For some people, this may make luxury hotels affordable. Fantastic deals are guaranteed during this time, no matter where you stay.
  • Grab an unlimited Rajasthani thali (platter) for lunch. You'll be able to eat as much as you can for only a few dollars.
  • Haggling is expected at markets and other stores that aren't fixed-price (such as government emporiums). Here are some tips for bargaining to help with the process.

Udaipur: the city of lakes (and palaces).

Home to exquisite palaces, intricate temples, and a multitude of lakes, the city of Udaipur is the quintessential vacation destination in the north-west of India. The capital of the state of Rajasthan, the so-called ‘City of Lakes’ boasts picturesque settings, unforgettable sights, and a romantic ambiance, all of which prove alluring to travellers not only from across India but the world at large.

Stunning Palaces

Reminiscent of a fairy tale setting, the city of Udaipur is home to a treasure trove of remarkable palaces, the oldest of which is City Palace. Originally constructed in the sixteenth century and extended over the next few hundred years, the lakefront palace remains as impressive today as when it was first constructed. Head to Ambrai Ghat to get the perfect photo of this awe-inspiring structure.

Whilst the City Palace sits on the shoreline of Lake Pichola, two other splendid palaces can be found on the lake itself. Jag Mandir, which dates back to 1652, and Lake Palace, built in 1746, are both island palaces that look every bit as majestic as you might expect. Each of the palaces has been converted to a high-end hotel. If you want to stay in the lap of luxury (and can afford to do so), this is the place to stay.

Back on terra firma, the Monsoon Palace (or Sajjan Garh) is also worth a visit. The nineteenth century structure, which has served as an astronomical centre and hunting lodge amongst other things, may not be as well looked after as its counterparts, but remains an impressive sight. There’s also a zoo nearby.

Inspiring Temples

Whilst Udaipur’s palaces will take your breath away, the city’s temples are no slouch in the visual department either. Top of the list of must-see temples is Jagdish Temple. A massive structure in the centre of the city, the Hindu temple dates back to 1651, making it the oldest in the city.

Overlooking Lake Sagar Fateh, Neemach Mata Temple is a little more subdued than the imposing Jagdish Temple. What it lacks in curb appeal though is made up by the views on offer.

Climb the lengthy stairway leading up to the temple and you’ll be treated to magnificent views of the city and lake below. Sunrise and sunset are especially impressive.

If you’ve not quite got your fill of temples within the city limits, a guided tour of some of the other religious sites found near Udaipur may sate your appetite. These include Ek Ling Nath Ji Temple and Ranakpur Temple. In particular, the sprawling Kesariyaji Temple in Rishabhdeo – approximately 40 miles from Udaipur – is well worth the return trip.

Udaipur is home to five individual lakes, a detail that has given rise to the moniker, the ‘Venice of the East’. The main lake, Lake Pichola, is found at the heart of the city. Its shores are dotted with hotels offering rooms with superior views, as well as the previously mentioned island hotels. Undoubtedly, this is the place to stay when you’re in Udaipur. You’ll find several picturesque walking trails around the lake, as well as two islands to visit.

Lake Fateh Sagar also offers a picturesque setting, including some lush greenery. Visitors flock to Nehru Park, located on an island on the lake. The park is home to the Udaipur Solar Observatory, a popular tourist attractions. Boat rides around the lake are also available. Travellers wishing to venture a little further may enjoy a trip to Dhebar Lake. Situated 32 miles from the city centre, the lake features a marble dam and a wildlife sanctuary.

City Museums

In addition to its impressive historical structures, Udaipur also features a selection of museums that are sure to be a hit with culture vultures and history buffs. The City Palace itself has been converted to a museum, housing an array of lavishly decorated rooms and historic artefacts. A trip to the museum is an effortless way to while away an afternoon. Head to Durbar Hall to see truly impressive chandeliers.

Elsewhere in the city, Bangore-Ki-Haveli is an eighteenth-century mansion that has been intricately restored. There are a total of 138 rooms here, most of which can be explored, while special performances are regularly hosted.

Other museums in the city include the Government Museum, which houses a trove of oddities and historic relics, and Bhartiya Lok Kala Museum, which specialises in folk art. One of the city’s museums that might take you by surprise is the Vintage and Classic Car Collection. Here you’ll discover Cadillacs, Mercedes, Austins, and MGs, as well as a Rolls-Royce Phantom that appeared in the James Bond movie, Octopussy.

Out and About in the City

Venture out of your hotel and on to the city streets and you’ll soon discover that Udaipur is a vibrant city with plenty to keep you occupied. Shopping malls, street markets, and bazaars are plentiful and, quite frankly, can be exciting places to visit. There’s no shortage of restaurants and eateries, making it easy to sample the local cuisine.

Amidst the many hotels, guest houses, and shops, you’ll also discover coffee shops, cinemas and galleries. Meanwhile, the city’s bus and railway stations offer the chance to head out of Udaipur and explore some of the other local towns.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, try out the Mansapurna Karni Ropeway. This cable car system operates between Deen Dayal Park and Machhla Magra Hill. The journey between the two offers the chance to glimpse some of the best scenery in the region.
