Panchmukhi Mahadev Temple has a special makeup of Lord Shiva every Monday evening. Different idols of Lord Shiva are decorated on all four Mondays of Sawan. Ratanpur- the ancient capital of Chhattisgarh

India has always been a culturally rich heritage country, which has also witnessed several kingdoms and rulers. Every kingdom had its own tradition and prominence, including a capital city which was economically rich, developed and most importantly closes to the trading hubs or had connectivity. The capital of each kingdom had a fort where the royal family and the kinfolk lived but the other reason for building a fort was to get protection from invaders. These powerful capitals and incredible forts have splendor in itself.

One such capital was Ratanpur and its magnificent fort. Ratanpur was the capital of Dakshin Kaushal now known as Chhattisgarh, a state of India. Ratanpur is situated 25 km away from the Bilaspur city of Chhattisgarh. It also lies in the national highway 200, towards ambikapur city.

Dakshin Kaushal was ruled by several kingdoms including Guptas, Buddhists, Jains, Sharabhpurians, Panduvanshis, Kalchuris and Marathas. Ratanpur was founded by kalchuri king Ratnraja , in 1050 A.D. Ratnraja build the strategic fort in ratanpur while shifting his capital from Tumman.

This magnificent fort was built on a plateau which was surrounded by ponds from all three sides along with a strategic location which had connectivity and nearby forest for army cantonment. The fort includes large walls to protect them from invaders and fencing around the fort. The architecture of the fort was simple and strategic. The fort has four grandeur entrances named as Simha, Ganesh Bhairav and Semar dwar. The walls of the fort had several carvings of sculptures including gods and goddesses. It has a huge expanse of garden, several forts, and temple.

One such fort is known as Gaj kila which means elephant fort. It is assumed that elephants must be kept here which were used in the army or by the kings. Just beside the Gaj Kila stands the prosperous temple of Lord Jagganath. Jagannath temple was constructed by King Kalyan Rai, where the royal family worshipped. There is another temple called Laxmi Narayan temple which was built by Anandi Bai, who was a Maratha queen.

The fort in the west entrance was made by Laxman rai for his wives, the anecdote popular here is that king Laxman rai had 28 queens and they all performed sati together. And in the remembrance of those queens, every near the Atha bissa Talab Magh fair takes place. There are also ruins of bath complex in the fort where the royal family took bath. There are shreds of evidence of building grandeur forts by kalchuris in Dakshin Kaushal.

In the year 1741 maratha army chief Bhaskar pant destroyed the Gaj kila by cannon balls. then from 1756 nagpur king bimbaji Rao took the throne of ratanpur. marathas ruled ratanpur from 1756 to 1854 and made several tourist attractions one of them is ram tekri. After 1854 ratanpur also came under Britishers.

Other attractions

Other than the historical evidence of fort ratanpur is also associated with one of the Shakti peeth, which has divine significance in the whole part of Chhattisgarh. This temple attracts devotees every day and tourists during the time of Durga Puja.

These forts despite being colossal, stands stiff and narrate the story of apogee and the decline of a kingdom, where bloodshed was common for the throne. But we can find several anecdotes regarding ruins of this fort , some said plague hit the city and the royal family abandoned the fort or some say in search of king’s treasures thieves’ dugout the foundation of the fort because of which forts became weak and starts to turn into remnants. Whatever may be the reason but, ratanpur adds a significant and glorious chapter to the marvellous Indian history.

Ratanpur is a town and a nagar palika in Bilaspur district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. It is situated around 25 kilometers 16 mi from Bilaspur on National Highway 200 towards Ambikapur. Ratanpura, initially known as Ratnapura, was the capital of Kalachuris of Ratnapura, who were a branch of the Kalachuris of Tripuri. As indicated by the 1114 CE Ratanpur engraving of the neighborhood lord Jajjaladeva I, his predecessor Kalingaraja vanquished Dakshina Kosala district, and made Tummana present day Tuman his capital. Kalingaraja's grandson Ratnaraja built up Ratnapura current Ratanpur.

In 1407, the Kingdom of Ratanpur was separated into two sections, with its lesser branch administering from Raipur. It proceeded as the capital of Haihaiyavansi Kingdom until the eighteenth century, when it managed expansive territories of Chhattisgarh, until the point that the region go to the control of the Bhosle and later the British. The town is famous as a religious focus and numerous Hindu lovers come here to offer their petitions and look for the favors at the Mahamaya Temple, goddess Mahamaya otherwise called Kosaleswari, as she was managing god of Dakshin Kosal current Chhattisgarh. Numerous different sanctuaries, for example, Bhudha Mahadev and Ramtekri are additionally arranged there.

Referred to as Ratanpura in the ancient inscriptions of Haihaiya Kings, the modern day Ratanpur, full of temples and ponds, is an ancient town of immense historic value, is situated in the Kota tehsil of Bilaspur district in Chhattisgarh. The town has a rich history and according to some mythological theories, the town has connections to Hindu epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana. In the medieval times, Ratanpur acquired much importance as King RatanDev shifted his capital to this place, to rule the then Dakshin-Koshala, now major parts of Chhattisgarh. In the modern times, Ratanpur is famous because of Shri Mahamaya Devi Temple and the Ancient Fort.

If we look down to the history of Hindu Epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana, there are many stories connected to Ratanpur. There are three major incidents which would attract anyone’s attention towards this small town. The first incident is related to Mahabharata where it is believed that during the treta yug, when Lord Shiva killed Surpnakha’s husband Kapardidev, for abducting Parvati, tears rolled down from her kajal decorated eyes and filled a pond with dark water, now known as the Kajal Talab of Ratanpur. The other mythological story connected to Ratanpur takes us to the Ramayana epic where it is believed that this town was the birth place of Lord Rama’s mother Kaushalya. Another interesting story which has certainly got more relevance to the modern times is the story of the formation of Mahamaya temple in Ratanpur, as it is believed that the shoulder of Sati Parvati fell at this place, making it as one of the 52 Shaktipeeths, located in the country.

The next phase of importance for the town of cultural heritage of Chhattisgarh, comes from the Kaluchuri’s. Kalachuris were one of the prominent Kshatriyas of Medival India and they ruled various parts of ancient India from 7 Th century to 18 th century, and one amongst those were Kalachuris of Ratanpur, who called themselves Haihaiyavanshis. Around 1050 AD King RatanDev 1 shifted the capital of Kaluchuri kingdom from Tumman to Ratanpur. There are two interesting theories related to King’s decision to shift the capital city. One theory emphasizes on the strategic geographical location of Ratanpur due to its defensive and riverine site. A village, Koni, presented a suitable place for cantonment of the army and the forest of Ratanpur provided ideal forest training ground for jungle war, also the bridge served as a perfect means of regular supply of material needs of the soldier. While the other theory suggests that once during a night stay under a tree near the Mahamaya temple, King Ratandev 1 saw Goddess Mahamaya and later in his dream the Goddess told him to shift the capital city.

The modern day Ratanpur has many temples, ponds and also the ancient Palaces and forts which is now under the Archeological Survey of India, being repaired for more research on finding its history and importance. The Mahamaya Devi Temple, which is the center of attraction for Hindu devotees, is said to be built around 12 th century AD and the first puja and abhishek of the Goddess was performed by King RatnaDev 1. The temple is built on the Nagar school of Architecture and the main campus of the temple has smaller statues of Mahakali, Bhadrakali. SuryaDev, Lord Vishnu, Lord Hanuman, Bhairav and Lord Shiva along with the dual statue of Maa Mahamaya.

The temple attracts most devotees twice a year during the time of Navratas, where devotees have to struggle a lot and patiently wait to get a glimpse of Goddess Mahamaya and pay their rituals. Many big halls surround the main campus of the temple and are used for keeping alive the Jyoti Kalashas for the whole nine days by the temple administration, on behalf of the devotees.

Other temples of rich historical importance include the Mahamrityunjaya Panchmukhee Shiv Mandir. Kanthi Dewal and Ram Tekri.

The ruined fort of Ratanpur has no particular history and is believed to be built by King RatanaDev when he shifted his capital. The earliest inscription found in Ratanpur is dated in Kalchuri Year 821 (1069 CE) in the reign of king Prithvideva, son of RatnaDev 1. The fort which is located on a plateau, is speculated to had four gates of entry named as Simha, Ganesh, Bhairav and Semar Dwar. One of the gates has some statues of God and Goddess. There are many temples inside the fort also like the Jagannath Temple.

Ratanpur is certainly an attractive tourist destination where one can appreciate the beauty of nature as well as admire the historical buildings and temples around the town. The nearest railway station to Ratanpur is Bilaspur Junction and the nearest Airport is Swami Vivekananda Airport, Raipur.

Legends And Architecture: Explore Chhattisgarh Monuments

2. Rajim Kumbh – Where Legends Converge

The main attraction of Rajim is the cluster of temples that showcase various architectural styles and religious traditions.

The Rajiv Lochan Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is a significant religious site and is believed to be where Lord Rama performed penance to atone for his sins after defeating Ravana. The temple’s architecture reflects the blend of Nagara and Dravidian styles, exemplifying the harmony between cultures in Chhattisgarh.

3. Sirpur – Tracing the Buddhist Heritage

The temples are found in the beautiful Maikal Hills. They have impressive architectural details, just like the famous Khajuraho temples in Madhya Pradesh.

The legend associated with the Bhoramdeo Temple complex revolves around its name, which is believed to be derived from the words “Bhura” (old) and “Deo” (God). Local folklore narrates the story of a sage who performed penance to appease Lord Shiva, and in response, the divine being appeared and blessed the sage. 

The temple’s carvings depict various aspects of human life, mythological tales, and scenes of love and passion, making it a fascinating testament to the artistic expression of its time.

5. Kailash and Kutumsar Caves

The Kailash and Kutumsar Caves, nestled within the Kanger Valley National Park in Chhattisgarh, stand as awe-inspiring creations of nature. The Kailash Caves showcase a labyrinth of limestone caves adorned with stunning stalactite and stalagmite formations. The focal point is a stalagmite structure resembling Mount Kailash, giving the caves their name. To reach the temple, visitors can climb the 1,000 steps or take a ropeway ride, adding to the allure of the pilgrimage experience.

8. Kevalya Dham Jain Temple

The Kevalya Dham Jain Temple, located in the serene town of Sonkatch, Madhya Pradesh, is a revered pilgrimage site for followers of Jainism. This magnificent temple is dedicated to Lord Adinath, the first Tirthankara of Jainism.

The temple’s architecture showcases intricate marble carvings and detailed sculptures, reflecting the artistic prowess of Jain artisans. The serene ambiance and the divine atmosphere within the temple complex make it an ideal place for meditation and spiritual introspection.

One of the main attractions of Kevalya Dham Jain Temple is the 84-foot-tall statue of Lord Adinath, which stands tall as a symbol of devotion and reverence. The temple also houses several other smaller shrines dedicated to other Tirthankaras.

Devotees from far and wide visit this sacred temple to seek blessings, offer prayers and participate in religious ceremonies. The Kevalya Dham Jain Temple holds deep religious significance and is a testament to the enduring legacy of Jainism’s principles of non-violence, compassion, and enlightenment.
