Utopia of the Seas Aft Aerial

Plan the Best Cruise for your Family

By Amanda Mesa | Published on April 19, 2024

It's no big secret that cruising is one of the most convenient options for a family vacation. Most major cruise lines cater to families, featuring ships that offer all kinds of fun activities, entertainment and even family suites designed to give everyone plenty of room to unwind comfortably. But with so many cruise lines and ships to choose from, how do you narrow down your search and find one that checks all your boxes for an unforgettable escape?

Take it from a seasoned traveler: One of the top options out there right now is Utopia of the Seas ℠. The newest Oasis Class ship is loaded from bow to stern with adrenaline-amping attractions like the longest slide at sea, plenty of complimentary and specialty dining options to please the most finicky of eaters and spectacular, family-friendly entertainment to light up every night of your sailing. This ship is also home to one of the most jaw-dropping accommodations on the ocean — the sprawling Ultimate Family Suite with its own karaoke and cinema room and an in-room slide. What's more, Utopia of the Seas ℠ emphasizes three- and four-night getaways, making it easy for families to make memories even if they only have a few days to spend on an escape.

Read on for everything you need to know to have the best family vacation on this latest addition to the Oasis Class.

Plenty For Families To Do During The Day

O Oasis Class ships are known for their standout onboard attractions, and Utopia of the Seas ℠ brings back lots of guest favorites — in a bigger and better way. The ship is home to the Ultimate Abyss℠, rising 10 stories with zoom boosters and transparent racing windows and qualifying as the longest dry slide at sea. At The Perfect Storm, you'll also find the Supercell℠ and dual racer slides Typhoon℠ and Cyclone℠, the latter filled with pulse-pounding twists and turns that will have both parents and kids shrieking with excitement.

Family Enjoying Mini Golf at Wonder Dunes

If you've read my previous reporting on cruises, you may remember that my favorite place to hang out on any cruise ship is poolside. So when I found out that Utopia of the Seas ℠ offers one of the boldest pool scenes in the fleet, it quickly climbed the ranks on my "top ships" list. There are a whopping five pools on board — two resort-style and one with a sloping beach entry on the top deck. This is where families will find most of the action, including reggae bands and impromptu pool parties that guests of all ages will love. Then there's the adults-only Solarium pool (more my vibe), where guests aged 16 and older can chill with plenty of room to lounge and bubbly whirlpools affording breathtaking views. The Solarium pool even has its own bar, so grown-ups can enjoy all their favorite vacation libations just steps away.

If you and your fam want a little extra privacy and space, you can reserve one of the ship's casitas. Each of these poolside cabanas comes with exclusive attendant service, delivering snacks and sips directly to you.

In addition to an epic pool scene and adrenaline-amping slides, Utopia of the Seas ℠ boasts an iconic FlowRider® surf simulator, twin rock-climbing walls, a zip line that soars across the ship's Boardwalk® neighborhood and a fun, all-ages mini golf course, Aqua Dunes. All of these attractions are complimentary for guests, so you can pack every day at sea with thrill-filled adventures for free.

Exclusive Play Spaces For Teens And Kids

Social 100 Teens Selfie

Knowing a cruise ship offers dedicated kids' clubs or childcare programs can be a huge deal for traveling families — including mine, as I remember feeling bored as a kid on vacation with my parents and their grown-up friends. When my husband and I travel with couples who have small children or teens, it's nice to know we can still enjoy some adult time on board while the littles have a blast hanging out with guests their own age in a safe, supervised environment.

Utopia of the Seas ℠ offers the cruise line's award-winning Adventure Ocean® Youth Program, which provides full days of supervised activities and entertainment for kids aged three through 11 — all complimentary to cruise guests. Cruisers bringing babies along can take advantage of the Royal Babies and Tots℠ Nursery, offering care for the littlest guests for a fee. And if you're cruising with teens, they'll be happy to know this larger-than-life ship has a swanky cool hangout with daily programming (think disco parties and game nights) they can experience with others in their cohort.

Yet another thrilling space for kids on board Utopia of the Seas ℠ is the Wonder Playscape, which features slides, climbing walls, puzzles and other interactive features for kiddos. The space was completely reimagined for this ship, so you can expect surprises even if you've experienced the Wonder Playscape on board another ship in the past.

Restaurants To Please Every Palate

Foodies, rejoice! Utopia of the Seas ℠ goes big and bold on flavors, no matter what you or your kids are in the mood for. You'll find more than 20 unique dining venues on board, including brand-new concepts. At the Windjammer, you and your family will have over 200 incredible dishes to choose from every night of your sailing, not to mention delicious breakfast, brunch and lunch options, totally free of charge. The casual restaurant has more than 1,000 seats, so you never need to worry about snagging a table for you and your crew.

The Mason Jar Mother and Son having Lunch

Two of my other favorite free restaurants are Sorrento's Pizza, an open-late spot that serves up perfection by the slice, and Dog House, known for its yummy artisanal brats piled with all your favorite toppings. If you're a brunch lover like me, you'll find plenty to rave about at The Mason Jar, a Southern-inspired specialty restaurant that highlights hearty eats from the bayou and the Low Country. Standouts include crispy chicken paired with fluffy waffles, decadent cinnamon rolls, smoky BBQ and incredible lobster and crawfish gumbo. Brunch here steals the show, though you can also chow down at dinnertime and late at night — The Mason Jar is open until 1 a.m.

If you're looking to plan the perfect date night, all you have to do is head to Central Park®. The Trellis Bar there is great for enjoying pre-dinner sips, from cocktails to fine wines and bubbly. This leafy, lush neighborhood is home to some of the ship's top specialty restaurants, including Chops Grille℠, an elegant steakhouse that provides a great backdrop for special occasion dinners like birthdays and anniversaries.

For an elevated family dinner, try Giovanni's℠ Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar. This chic specialty restaurant emphasizes rustic Italian dishes, many served family-style. From tender osso buco to cheesy lasagna and kid-friendly pizzas, everything on the menu is exemplary. Prefer to keep dinner a little more casual but still want to dial it up? Hooked Seafood℠ — a laid-back yet stylish specialty dining venue delivering an authentic taste of the New England coast — is a wonderful option. Among my favorites are their Maryland crab cakes and creamy Maine lobster rolls.

Wow-Worthy Evening Entertainment

The fun doesn't stop when the sun sets on board Utopia of the Seas ℠ . This ship keeps the good times going strong long after dark, with spectacular shows every night of your sailing. At the AquaTheater, the deepest pool at sea, guests can watch as world-class divers dazzle with deck-defying acrobatics, stunts and synchronized swimming. The ice-skating shows are just as awe-inspiring, featuring a talented team of figure skaters that will wow you with their dizzying spins and graceful jumps. And of course, you can look forward to incredible Broadway-style musicals in the ship's main theater, performed every evening for your family's viewing pleasure.

Intense Wonder of the Seas

All onboard shows are complimentary — they're one of many things included in your cruise fare.  All you have to do is reserve your seats in advance via the Cruise Planner app or on board at the box office. This will ensure you can snag seats for everyone in your party in the same row or section.

If you're cruising with adults or planning to take advantage of the ship's convenient evening childcare options so you can enjoy a night out on deck, you'll find plenty of bars and venues to keep you occupied into the wee hours. My favorite spot for dancing is Boleros, a Latin-themed nightclub. Hosting a live band every night that delivers a hip-swinging medley of sultry salsa, samba and merengue classics, Boleros also mixes legendary mojitos.

If you prefer a concert, head to Music Hall, where incredible cover bands command the stage, giving you plenty of inspiration to bust a move. And at The Attic, you can indulge in late-night belly laughs. This cozy, adults-only comedy club showcases a rotating lineup of fabulous stand-up comedians, from slapstick pros to unrivaled pun-masters. Maybe karaoke is a cornerstone of your identity, as it is for me? You won't want to miss out on Utopia' s Spotlight℠ Karaoke — a lively spot that lets you belt out your favorite hits in front of a full house, or book a private room for a more intimate concert with friends or family.

Staterooms Designed For Families Of All Kinds

In addition to the incredible onboard activities and restaurants Utopia of the Seas ℠ offers cruisers of all ages, the ship's accommodations show a clear family focus. There are staterooms on board to suit groups and families of all kinds, including plenty of options for connecting rooms. You can take your pick of spacious staterooms with stunning views and upgraded amenities, like a sprawling Ocean View Large Balcony or an Ultra Spacious Ocean View Balcony.

Ultimate Family Suite Living Room

If you're traveling with older teens or exclusively adults and want to stay close to the Solarium, consider a Solarium Suite — a new suite category only available on Utopia of the Seas ℠ . Each Solarium Suite features 280-degree views from the ship's uppermost levels, as well as all of the experience-enhancing perks that come with Royal Suite Class Star status, including unique amenities, expanded access to suites-only parts of the ship and surprises curated by your very own Royal Genie.

That said, the crown jewel of staterooms and suites on board Utopia of the Seas ℠ is without a doubt the ship's Ultimate Family Suite . This sprawling hideaway includes three huge bedrooms that can accommodate up to 10 guests, plus an in-suite cinema and karaoke station, a corner balcony with a private whirlpool, table tennis, spectacular views and even a two-story slide that young ones (and the young at heart) will love.

Whether you're traveling with a baby, kids, teens or the extended family , Utopia of the Seas ℠ makes coordinating family vacations stress-free.

Royal Caribbean drink packages: Everything you need to know

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Royal Caribbean drink packages allow you to drink what you want and when you want without feeling like you are being nickeled and dimed. Isn’t that most cruisers’ dream? The all-inclusive, extra-fee beverage plans aren’t necessarily for everyone, but they are a nice way to enhance your cruise and take some of the stress out of in-the-moment vacation decisions.

Royal Caribbean ships offer a variety of packages, from a simple Water Package that keeps you and your crew hydrated during your cruise to a comprehensive plan that includes most alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Other than the Water Package, which is priced based on the quantity you order, drink packages on Royal Caribbean are priced per person, per day.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

The most common questions about Royal Caribbean’s drink packages revolve around what each package includes, whether they are worth the price, and when is the best time to buy your package. I’ve tried all of Royal Caribbean’s drink packages, but I’ve also cruised without any package. Here’s what you need to know to decide if a beverage plan is right for you.

What’s included in Royal Caribbean’s drink packages?

Royal Caribbean offers several different drink packages, and the inclusions vary based on your choice. All options include gratuities, and no Royal Caribbean drink package includes room service or minibar drinks. Also, unlimited alcoholic beverage packages may not be available while the ship sails in some locations, so package details may change based on itinerary.

Water Package

Royal Caribbean’s Water Packages are available in 12- and 24-packs of one-liter bottles of Evian water. The bottles will be delivered to your cabin on embarkation day.

If you don’t want to pay for a Water Package, you can find drinking water at complimentary drink stations in the buffet area and often in other locations on Royal Caribbean ships. You can bring your own reusable bottle and fill it from these stations or straight from the faucet in your cabin. The water throughout the ships is not only drinkable but also better than what’s available in many cities. You can also purchase bottles of water a la carte.

So why might you consider a Water Package? If you drink bottled water at home, you may prefer the taste. The package also allows you to have plenty of water on hand in your cabin or to take on excursions.

The downside is that one-liter bottles are not the ideal size for lugging off the ship with you. You must either bring a reusable bottle or purchase single-serving bottles for port days. You can get these at bars or at the gangway as you disembark in each port.

Classic Soda Package

Royal Caribbean’s Soda Package is for the serious soda drinker. On select ships, the package comes with a souvenir Coca-Cola cup with a chip on the bottom to allow the holder to use the Freestyle soda dispensing machines throughout the ship. The “magic” cup gets you all the refills you want 24 hours a day, with your pick of sodas with add-in flavorings. (Orange Coke is my fave.) Freestyle machines are available on 18 ships in the fleet.

You can also order a glass of soda at any restaurant or bar on board. Some venues only serve fountain sodas, but others have cans. One big bonus of the package is that sodas on Royal Caribbean’s private island destinations ( Perfect Day at Coco Cay and Labadee ) are included in the Soda Package. The only places you can’t get a free soda with this package is room service (because room service other than continental breakfast comes with a $7.95 service fee, no matter what you order) or from your cabin’s minibar.

Related: 8 best drinks to order with a cruise ship beverage package (and 3 to avoid)

You can bring up to 12 cans of soda (or bottles up to 17 ounces) per person on board with you in your carry-on luggage when you board the ship. So why would you want a Soda Package?

It’s a question of convenience. I’ve been known to take a couple of 16-ounce bottles of soda on board with me, but carrying on much more than that is a big hassle. With a Soda Package, you can easily access your beverage of choice anywhere you are on board — including ordering sodas from roaming bar servers at the pool, in the casino or at events and shows — or on Royal Caribbean’s private islands . You don’t have to return to your room to grab a soda. It’s also great for older kids and teens who might be roaming the ship with friends.

Refreshment Package

This is my favorite Royal Caribbean drink package. It includes still and sparkling water, sodas (with the included Freestyle magic cup), mocktails, premium coffees and teas (but not those from Starbucks stand-alone stores or kiosks) and freshly squeezed juices.

With this package, you can order almost anything non-alcoholic at bars and most restaurants on board. The Refreshment Package does not include shakes at Johnny Rockets, which are only included with the Deluxe Beverage Package.

Even the smoothies and protein shakes at Vitality Café are included in this package, as is the sweet tea at Portside BBQ on Oasis of the Seas. Want a strawberry slushy? Order a virgin strawberry daiquiri. Want hot cocoa? Covered. How about a virgin mudslide? A bartender will happily blend up vanilla ice cream, coffee, hazelnut syrup and chocolate syrup blended into a perfect mocha shake.

As with the Soda Package, you can order your non-alcoholic beverages, from sparkling water to fancy mocktails, from your pool lounger or blackjack table.

Plus, with the Refreshment Package, you’ve solved the problem of needing water to take off the ship with you for excursions and what to drink while on the private islands. It’s all included in this package.

Deluxe Beverage Package

This package takes all that’s available in the Refreshment Package (sodas, water, mocktails, premium coffee and tea, fresh-squeezed juice) and adds cocktails, spirits and liquors, as well as beer by the bottle or can and wine by the glass.

There are some limits on brands available with the package, but the list includes imported, domestic and craft beer, an extensive wine list and commonly ordered spirit brands on drinks up to $14. Any bar server can tell you what’s available on your cruise.

You also get a hefty 40% discount on bottles of wine up to $100 and a 20% discount on bottles over $100. It’s handy for sharing a bottle with your travel partner at dinner.

As with the soda and Refreshment Packages, the Deluxe Beverage Package can be used anywhere onboard (except stand-alone Starbucks locations). Use it in restaurants, bars and at any venue where a bar server is present, as well as at either of Royal Caribbean’s private island destinations. The Deluxe Beverage Package also throws in one more bonus — milkshakes at Johnny Rockets.

This package comes with a few caveats. If one person in a stateroom buys this package, everyone of legal drinking age in the stateroom must buy the same package, according to cruise line policy. If someone in your room does not drink alcohol, don’t worry. I’ve encountered many people who have called customer service and downgraded one or more non-drinking adults to a Refreshment Package.

Related: 15 ways that cruising newbies waste money on their first cruise

The package also does not include drinks that come with souvenir glasses. (Don’t worry, you can always order the same drink in a regular glass.)

If your vacation plans include alcoholic beverages, buying this package is a nice way to pay your cruise bar tab in advance rather than deal with the shock of a high bill at the end of the cruise.

What do Royal Caribbean drink packages cost?

The cruise line uses dynamic pricing on beverage packages the same way it does on cruise fares. That means you won’t know the prices for each package before you book a cruise. Demand, destination and promotions play a big part in the pricing, especially for the Deluxe Beverage Package, causing them to fluctuate slightly.

Here’s what you can expect a Royal Caribbean drink package to cost:

  • Water Package: 12 bottles for $39; 24 bottles for $69
  • Soda Package: $12.99 per person per day
  • Refreshment Package: $29 per person per day
  • Deluxe Beverage Package: $56 to $105 per person per day (depending on your ship and trip)

The prices listed above do not include an automatic 18% gratuity. You’ll want to factor that amount into your travel budget if you decide to purchase a package.

You will notice that the Deluxe Beverage Package price range listed above is a bit wider than what is posted on Royal Caribbean’s site. Posted price ranges include the disclaimer that prices on individual sailings may vary. We used a realistic range of prices from Royal Caribbean guests who have booked cruises and paid for drink packages in the past 12 months.

The best time to buy Royal Caribbean drink packages

You can purchase a beverage package as soon as you book your cruise. But should you? A lot depends on how soon your ship will depart. If you’re sailing within a few months, go ahead and get any packages you plan to buy — unless Black Friday happens before you sail. Black Friday deals on drink packages are generally the lowest you’ll find all year.

The package that varies most in price is the Deluxe Beverage Package. Its price is higher during peak travel times and on cruises with stops at private islands. Buying this package ahead of time is always cheaper than on board.

Royal Caribbean does advertise price drops and deals for pre-cruise purchases. If you’re waiting and hoping for a deal, frequent cruisers report that you should look at the actual price per person per day, not at the percentage off or BOGO deals to determine if the package price is where you want it.

Is a drink package on Royal Caribbean worth it?

Now that you know your choices and why you might want each package, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of whether these packages are a deal for you or not.

The one-liter bottles in the Water Package cost roughly the same as a 12-ounce bottle from a bar. That makes this package a deal, but only if you prefer bottled water over taps or dispensers. It’s also convenient to have the water delivered to your cabin, eliminating the need to bring a case of bottles on board or search for a bottle when you want water on the ship.

Soda Package

When ordering an individual soda on the ship, your charge will be what you’d expect to pay at a land-based restaurant, plus an 18% gratuity added automatically. When you ask a bar server for a soda on the ship, you’ll be charged just over $4 per soda with the tip, regardless of whether it comes in a can or from a fountain.

As the starting point for the Soda Package is just over $15 per person per day with the gratuity, you’ll need to count on drinking a minimum of four sodas a day for it to be a good value.

If you prefer nonalcoholic beverages, you can expect to pay around $7 for mocktails and protein shakes, $5 for lattes at non-Starbucks locations and close to $9 for smoothies. These prices are before the automatic 18% gratuity.

Here’s what your daily consumption might look like on the Refreshment Package: You could start with a morning latte ($6 after you add gratuity), grab water for your excursion ($3.84), a soda at lunch ($4), a couple mocktails during the afternoon ($8.25 each), another soda with dinner ($4), and another mocktail for the show or in the casino ($8.25).

That puts you over $40 for the day, making the Refreshment Package a deal at $34 (with tip) per person, per day. Drink much less than that, and it won’t be. The Refreshment Package price varies only slightly between sailings.

For alcoholic drinks, prices vary a lot based on your order. Beer and hard cider average $7-$9. Wine by the glass is $9-$25. Cocktails are $10-$14, except for the drink of the day, which is $8. These prices do not include the 18% gratuity.

When deciding if Royal Caribbean’s Deluxe Beverage Package is worth it, be sure to factor in non-alcoholic drinks you are likely to have, not just those with alcohol. How many premium coffees do you drink each day, including one with your dessert at dinner? How many waters and sodas?

The value of those often adds up to $25 or more per day. That leaves you with somewhere between $30 and $80 per day to spend on alcoholic drinks to break even.

If you’re lucky and can purchase your package at the lowest possible price, almost anyone who drinks a combination of non-alcoholic drinks and a couple of cocktails daily would break even. But if your purchase price is somewhere in the middle of the price range (where most people land), you would need to consume a minimum of $55 per day beyond the average non-alcoholic beverages to break even. That equals six beers or four or five glasses of wine or cocktails.

Related: Are cruise line drinks packages worth the price? What to know before you buy

Whichever package you choose, your value may also depend on your itinerary and activities. On a Caribbean cruise that includes a sea day or two and a stop at CocoCay, you’ll likely drink more – simply because you’re relaxing more than touring, and the hot temperatures will make you thirsty.

But what about a port-intensive cruise in Europe where you are off the ship for long hours and likely to be sampling local beverages? In those cases, the ship’s beverage package might not come through for you.

Additional factors

Before you decide if a Royal Caribbean drink package is worth it, there are two more things to consider: Your Crown and Anchor loyalty status and your Casino Royale player status .

If you are a Diamond C&A member, your SeaPass card will be loaded with four free drinks per day. Diamond Plus members get five drinks, and Pinnacle members get six. Those can be water, specialty coffee or tea other than at Starbucks, sodas from bar servers, beer, wine or cocktails up to $14 (except at Bionic Bar).

As for casino perks, if your status is Prime or higher, you can drink free from the casino bar anytime it is open.

Those free perks could make the difference in which package you choose, if any. For example, a Diamond member might use her free drink allotment on cocktails and wine and save money with a Refreshment or Soda Package for her other daily drinks. Or, perhaps, the free drinks are enough that it’s cheaper to buy a few nonalcoholic beverages a la carte.

Diamond Plus members also have a discount of 30% on Deluxe Beverage Packages when purchased on board. That’s rarely a good deal unless you simply forget to buy in advance, as pre-purchase in the cruise planner or app is almost always at least 30% lower than the onboard price.

Bottom line: Is a Royal Caribbean drink package right for you?

Now that you have all the facts, there are several ways to look at Royal Caribbean’s drink packages to determine if you should get one.

First, consider every kind of drink you will likely pay for on board. Are you happy with beverages that are included in the cruise fare? Those include tap water, drip coffee, tea, milk, lemonade and juice from a dispenser at breakfast. Or will your vacation only be complete with morning lattes, smoothies, fruity drinks by the pool and wine with dinner?

For some people, it’s easy. If you’re likely to drink four or five cocktails most days, plus specialty coffee, waters for excursions, soda and a glass of wine at dinner, your total, if purchased individually would easily exceed $80 per day. Unless your sailing has a higher-than-average price for the package, go for it.

But if you typically only drink a couple of glasses of wine at dinner, you aren’t likely to break even — at least not on the Deluxe Beverage Package. In that case, skip the package that includes alcohol and do the math on the Refreshment Package.

If you drink soda, the difference in price between the Soda Package and the Refreshment Package is $16. Almost any combination of two other drinks — lattes, mocktails, smoothies or bottled water — makes the Refreshment Package a deal for you. If you can live without the extras, stick with the soda-only package.

If none of those looks like a bargain, pay as you go. Some people set a daily drink budget and check themselves (or their kids) against their folio in the Royal Caribbean app or on the interactive television in their stateroom.  I’ve even met people who bring cash along to pay their drink balance daily at guest services to stay on track.

The other side of the equation is to factor the price of the drink package into the total vacation cost to make the cruise more of an all-inclusive vacation experience. Think about it like you would an all-inclusive land-based resort. When you vacation at one of those, you not only wouldn’t know the price of the drinks you consume, but you also would not care.

If you’re more interested in a stress-free vacation where you don’t have to agonize about the cost of every drink you consume than paying the least amount of money possible for your vacation, a Royal Caribbean drink package is totally worth it.

The bottom line is that drink packages on Royal Caribbean expand your choices. You can use packages to make your cruise as all-inclusive as you’d like (and maybe save some money in the process), or you can opt to cruise and drink in pay-as-you-go mode. Either way, you’ll find plenty of fun cocktails and mocktails, as well as your favorite wine and beer, to enhance your vacation at sea.

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

Growing up in a cruise family, I never thought about catching my next flight. Instead, I looked to the sea, dreaming of destinations I could reach by boat. I went on my first cruise when I was 9 years old and for the last 23 years since then, I’ve set sail countless times, cruising everywhere from the Bahamas to Europe. Sure, my family did take some shorter trips by plane, but my most unique travel experiences growing up all happened because of a cruise. I’ve island-hopped in the Caribbean, marveled at the Hubbard Glacier off the side of a ship in Alaska, and sailed down the Mediterranean from Spain.

As I’ve gotten older, my family trips have become more rare, and I’ve found different methods to travel across the world. However, my family decided to book a five-night cruise to Bermuda with Royal Caribbean this summer to celebrate my brother finishing his fellowship, the last step in his medical training. I pride myself on my ability to thoroughly prepare for a trip without overpacking, which means I’ve already started on my packing list. After all, in my two decades of cruising, I’ve learned a thing or two about what you’ll need once aboard the ship. From comfortable shoes to a waterproof phone case , here are 17 cruise essentials in my Amazon cart that would come in handy on your next trip, too.

Travel + Leisure / Rebecca Shinners

Seavilia Luggage Tag Holder

Cruises have a very particular system for boarding luggage, starting with emailing you your luggage tags, which you’re then expected to secure around your bags before boarding the ship. My dad has traditionally been in charge of this process on our family trips, but this time I’m taking over and ordering us these luggage tag holders. We’ve been left rushing to find a stapler or tape at the last minute too many times to not show up prepared. The best-selling luggage tag holders include steel rings that can easily be attached to your suitcase. Plus, they are made with a waterproof material and sealed at the top so you won’t have to worry about your luggage tag getting wet.

Depending on your cruise line, the brand offers two different size options and packs of four, six, eight, or 20 holders. The narrow option is suitable for Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise lines while the wide option can be used for Carnival, Norwegian, Princess, MSC, Holland America, Viking, Azamara, and Costa Cruises. Shoppers say the luggage tag holders, which have over 1,600 five-star ratings, feel sturdy on their bags and save them time at check-in. “The braided steel rings secure the tags to the bags much better than staples,” said one cruiser.

Hiearcool Universal Waterproof Phone Pouch

Cruises may be known for relaxation, but depending on where you’re sailing to, you’ll likely have the option to go on an adventurous water sports excursion. I have a tendency to sign up for jet skiing whenever it’s offered. In the past, I’ve purchased a waterproof phone pouch like this one while on my trip — but buying one in advance can help you save money and ensure you show up prepared.

These Hiearcool Waterproof Phone Pouches , which have 71,000 five-star ratings, were designed to protect your phone from the ocean. They’re sold in packs of two or three, and you can choose from 18 different colors. They are compatible with all smartphones up to 8.3 inches, including the most recent iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy, and Google Pixel. You can wear the lanyard around your neck during water sports or toss it in your bag for safekeeping at the beach. You’ll be able to use your phone’s touchscreen and face recognition features through the pouch as well.

“I bought this for a Caribbean vacation,” said one reviewer who used this pouch on a few different water excursions and while swimming in the ocean. “It kept my phone completely dry,” they said noting that they had space to store a small wallet in the pouch as well.

Beshon Flat Plug Power Strip

If you haven’t discovered the joy of packing an extension cord yet, trust me it’ll feel like an unexpected luxury on your next trip. Cruise ship staterooms are often smaller than traditional hotel rooms, so you’ll be thankful for extra outlets when it comes time to charge multiple devices or while getting ready at the same time as your cabinmate. My brother and I will be sharing a room on our upcoming trip, so an extension cord is especially vital to lessen sibling bickering (yes, even as grown adults). And of course, my brother would want me to tell you this was his idea originally.

This Beshon power strip features a flat design and wrap-around cord that makes it easy to pack without taking up too much space in your suitcase. It has three AC outlets, two USB-C Ports, and one USB-A, to ensure you won’t find yourself battling for outlet space on your next cruise. Plus, this power strip has 1,800 five-star reviews with multiple shoppers praising it for being “perfect for travel” and “space saving” since you can opt to leave your charging cubes at home. A fellow cruiser who said “outlets were not easily accessible” on a recent trip agreed that this was a great solution “for storage and packing.” It’s safe to say my brother will support my decision to upgrade us to this packable extension cord.

Anrabess Crochet Swim Cover-Up

I’m usually not an outfit repeater when I travel, but you will see me wear this cover-up all over the ship. The dress style offers both enough breathability to wear it outside and enough coverage to walk around inside as well. Just throw it over your swimsuit and you won’t have to worry about changing outfits before heading to the all-inclusive buffet. Cruises usually have air conditioning inside, and this long-sleeved dress will keep you comfortable as you go about different activities.

This Amazon best-seller comes in 22 different colors and the brand also sells a short sleeve and tank top version of the dress if you prefer. I’m currently eying the black-white colorway which features a black scalloped trim.

Dolce Vita Women's Starla Sandal

My goal when packing shoes for a cruise is to limit myself to just a few comfortable pairs, which means versatility is key. While these sandals are a newer style, Dolce Vita is one of my go-to brands for cute but comfortable footwear, so I feel confident ordering them for my trip. Plus, these sandals feature a cushioned platform bottom for added support and a strap on the back, meaning my feet won’t slide around while walking around the ship.

The Dolce Vita Starla Sandals come in 7 different colors, but I think the tan woven style will be a perfect match for all of my daytime outfits — and yes, my accessories really will have an island theme on this trip. Since the buckles have gold hardware, they can easily be dressed up as well. I plan on wearing them with everything from shorts and a tee shirt to flowy maxi dresses. Want to keep things waterproof? Try the uber-popular Crocs Women’s Brooklyn Low Wedges .

BTFBM Summer Bohemian Floral Casual Wrap Dress

If there’s one thing I’m going to do on a tropical vacation, it’s use it as a reason to wear a flirty dress. Cruisewear has gotten more casual over the years, but I prefer to dress up for dinners  — especially when I opt to go to the ship’s specialty restaurants — and most cruises have one or two formal nights included in their itineraries. This ASTR the Label midi dress features a corset-style bust, a flowy skirt with a leg slit, and a pretty floral pattern — what more could I ask for? But, if you’re looking for a similar style for less, you can’t go wrong with this flattering wrap dress that could just as easily pair with white sneakers as gold wedges for just $38.

Voilipex Packable Floppy Straw Sun Hat

A cruise isn’t just about your destination — it’s about the amenities you’ll experience once aboard. Traveling by plane means sitting in a cramped row, but on a cruise you’ll be sailing to different stops while sitting poolside. A hat is essential to protect your scalp from strong UV rays and shield your eyes from the sun. I prefer to pack a straw hat that feels stylish in addition to functional like this one from Volilipex.

The Floppy Straw Sun Hat is a lightweight material that makes it breathable on hot days. It comes in one size but features an interior drawstring that can easily be adjusted for a snug fit. Most importantly, it’s unstructured so you can fold it to pack without worrying about losing its shape. I know I’ll be wearing this straw bucket hat on both the boat and around Bermuda since I can easily throw it into my day bag. The hat comes in 12 different solid colors, including match-everything neutrals like beige and khaki. However, there are also seven crochet-style patterns available, which I’m tempted to grab as well. A tropical vacation is the perfect time to experiment with bright colors and fun accessories, after all.

Skays Reversible Floral One Piece Bathing Suit

I’ll be driving to the cruise port for my trip this summer, which means I don’t have to worry about suitcase restrictions or weight limits. Yet, I’m still a sucker for a space-saving solution. This reversible swimsuit is the perfect multitasking piece for your next vacation. Once you wear it to the pool or beach, you can hand wash it in your shower and turn it around the other way — no one will suspect you’re actually re-wearing the same suit.

Another perk of this swimsuit is that it provides good coverage on the stomach and back, making it a great option for a family trip. While it’s a more conservative style in my opinion, the tie sleeves and square neckline are on-trend, and it comes in eight pretty floral prints (yes, all of which are reversible as well.) Reviewers found this swimsuit to be good-quality and say you won’t have to worry about see-through fabric. One traveler who wore the suit while hiking to a swimming spot in Croatia said it was “ very comfortable .”

Sojos Retro Oval Sunglasses

Okay, these best-selling sunglasses aren’t technically in my shopping cart — they’re in my purse because I couldn’t wait any longer to buy them. I started ordering sunglasses from Amazon years ago after losing one too many pairs of more expensive shades, and I haven’t looked back since. Amazon sunglasses feel just as high-quality as any other brands I’ve tried, and this pair, which has over 23,900 five-star ratings, is no exception. The polarized lenses will protect your eyes from UV rays — plus, the hexagonal design is unexpectedly flattering.

I purchased the Sojos glasses in the black colorway but they also come in five different stylish options. My Amazon sunnies collection also includes the brand’s Retro Round Polarized Sunglasses and my brother is a fan of their Retro Aviator Sunglasses.

Hydro Flask Stainless Steel Standard Mouth Water Bottle

Cruises are known for their all-inclusive atmosphere, and they really do a good job of providing anything you could need aboard the ship in my experience. However, that doesn’t mean you should leave your reusable water bottle behind. You’ll still need it when you deport the ship for an excursion, and trust me you’ll be thanking yourself for bringing it with you to the cruise ship’s pool. Water may be readily available on the boat, but an insulated tumbler will do a better job at keeping your drink cold than a glass, and you’ll be refilling it less often. I’ve been loyal to my Hydro Flask water bottle for about five years now and can attest to its ability to keep your drink cold for up to 24 hours.

The Hydro Flask water bottle comes in 14 colors, each available in either 18 ounces, 21 ounces, or 24 ounces.  I find the 21-ounce size to be the most versatile — it’s large enough that I don’t have to refill it too often without being too heavy to carry around with me. Plus, I love that the cover has a handle to make it easily transportable. It’s even dishwasher safe (which will be important once you return home from your trip). It should come as no surprise that this water bottle has over 20,000 five-star ratings on Amazon.

Kindle Paperwhite

Planning to relax and unwind aboard your cruise ship? A good book can help you leave behind the pressures of work and everyday responsibilities. While scrolling social media recently, I ended up on #BookTok and heard multiple readers call Magnolia Parks the “London version of Gossip Girl,” since it follows the love life of a socialite. The Magnolia Parks Universe is a series, meaning you can bring multiple books with you depending on the length of your trip. You can grab the paperback books or download them all on your Kindle before you set sail on your voyage.

Velvet Caviar iPhone Case & Battery Pack

Despite working in social media for my entire 10-year career, I have a tendency to let my phone battery run out. This isn’t the best habit to have while traveling, especially if you are going on a European cruise with 10-plus hour excursions. However, ever since I received this Velvet Caviar iPhone Case and Battery Pack, my phone hasn’t died once. This charger is lightweight and thin, making it easy to take on the go. It uses MagSafe technology to attach to the case and charge your phone.

The case and matching charger come in an assortment of different patterns ranging from checkered print to marble. There’s just something so satisfying to me about how they were designed to match each other. However, I will note that the charger can generally only be used to charge your phone once before needing to be recharged. (Of course, if you’ve already ordered an extension cord for your stateroom, you’ll have the space to do so.)

Vooray 22L Zoey Tote Bag

I gifted this tote bag to my mom a few months ago, and I’ve rarely spotted her without it ever since. I was tempted to buy one for myself the last time she packed in it to visit me, and I think my upcoming trip is the perfect excuse to finally add it to my cart. This might not seem like your typical beach bag, but I prefer to pack a tote that can have multiple functions for a cruise: I’ll be able to use it to carry my pool essentials on the ship and as a day bag on excursions. It would even make the perfect gym bag if you plan to work out on your trip.

As someone who has tried a ton of tote bags, I have very specific criteria of what I look for: Interior pockets and a comfortable strap that can easily rest on your shoulder are at the top of my list. The Zoey Tote bag has an interior water bottle sleeve and an enclosed pocket for zipping up anything you want to keep out of the sun. The magnetic snap closure makes it easy to open and close and the inner liner is water resistant. It features both top handles and a removable longer strap, so you can carry it however is most comfortable for you.

You might be thinking this tote could make a good personal item or carry-on as well, and you’d be correct. Personally, I prefer to bring a larger duffle and tuck a tote like this inside it for even more space. This bag is easy to compress because it’s made of a soft cotton material. But my favorite packing hack is to stuff a tote with clothes before putting it into your suitcase to really save space.

Havaianas Women's Slide Classic Metallic Sandal

Another important shoe to have on a cruise is a pool slide that will take you from the outer deck to the buffet. Have I mentioned yet that cruises have all-you-can-eat buffets? And that you’re always a few steps away from your next snack while aboard the ship? You just need a shoe that will take you there.

I’ve never been a big fan of flip-flops and other popular slide styles I’ve tried are so chunky that they feel heavy. Enter, Havaianas Slide Sandals . This style is waterproof and offers a platform that’s thick but not too bulky so that you feel comfortable walking around in them beyond the pool deck. The footbed is textured so that your foot stays in place. Plus, the metallic design is fun while still being neutral enough to go with all of your swimsuits. I may have to pick them up in both the rose gold and the silver colorways.

Too often I hear people say that they don’t go on cruises because they’re prone to motion sickness. And I have to be honest, even aboard a larger ship, you’ll likely be able to feel the boat rocking at times. However, as someone who is sensitive to sea sickness myself, I can assure you this shouldn’t deter you from setting sail and there’s a solution that will keep you feeling your best.

Dramamine is the first thing I buy for all of my trips and the only reason I’m able to keep up with my cruising habit. I even once found myself buying a German version of this pill when I didn’t bring enough on a Europe trip (though it did make for one of my all-time most interesting souvenirs). While I’ve tried nonoral remedies for motion sickness, such as patches and wristbands , I find that these pills are the only thing that ward off my nausea completely. If you’re prone to motion sickness too, I suggest taking the pills preemptively, at a specified time each day. They last for 24 hours and the less drowsy formula doesn’t cause any tiredness for me.

Kopari SPF 50 Sun Shield Body Glow

A sunburn can quickly turn a relaxing vacation into a painful experience. During my decade of working at beauty publications, I’ve heard multiple dermatologists say that the best sunscreen is one you’ll actually use. For me, that generally means avoiding anything too sticky or with a strong synthetic smell. I’ve been wanting to try this Kopari Sun Shield Body Glow since seeing it on social media because it goes beyond just your typical SPF formula.

The lightweight gel formula glides on easily and offers SPF 50 protection. It’s infused with macadamia and hibiscus oils to ward off UV ray damage and Vitamin E to protect the skin from environmental stressors. But what really caught my attention about this product is that it leaves a shimmery shine on your skin that will make you look sunkissed — even if you spent all day lounging in the shade. You can choose between three colors, each leaving a different metallic shimmer on the skin. I will definitely be covering myself in this sunscreen before heading to the pool.

Kerastase Nutritive 8H Magic Night Hair Serum

I tend to be a minimalist when it comes to packing beauty products for a cruise, but this Kerastase serum is the one product I won’t set sail without. The ship deck can get windy, which causes my hair to frizz, while going in the pool and the ocean makes it even drier than usual. However, this serum truly does work magic on my strands, just like its name implies.

While this serum can be used as a leave-in-treatment, I find that it instantly smoothes any frizz as well. I simply put one drop of the product into my hand, then run it down my hair, massaging it into any unruly curls. Within minutes, my hair looks shinier with no signs of frizz. It’s a major time-saver when I’m going straight from dinner to a show and don’t want to worry about redoing my hair. I like to take advantage of packing full-size products when I’m not flying to my cruise, but if you do need a TSA-approved product, this spray bottle would work well to dispense the serum — and you’ll be able to relax on deck frizz-free.
