A classic expeditionary camp in a million acres of animals.

Our famous jungle-chic lodge where we live and breathe chimpanzees.

19 of the best safari camps and lodges in Tanzania

Where to stay to see the wildebeest migration in the serengeti, avoid the crowds in the ngorongoro crater, and track chimps on the shores of lake tanganyika.

safari camps in tanzania

T anzania has more than its fair share of historical and natural riches. It was here, in the Olduvai Gorge in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, that Louis and Mary Leakey discovered the remains of what they called homo habilis (aka the ancestor of homo erectus and homo sapiens ). This vast, wild country also has Africa’s highest mountain (Kilimanjaro), its greatest migration (from the Serengeti), a share of its two biggest lakes (Victoria and Tanganyika), and some of the most beautiful islands in the Indian Ocean.

With more than a third of Tanzania protected, the wildlife viewing — from lions to chimpanzees — is superb, and there are plenty of ways to see it, as well as opportunities to interact with the people who live alongside it. With time and money, visitors can also get off the beaten track in Ruaha National Park to the south, or Katavi and the Mahale Mountains in the west.

The Hillside Suite at Singita Sasakwa Lodge

1. Singita Sasakwa Lodge, Grumeti Reserve

Best for a luxury safari experience Grumeti is a private game reserve on the western border of Serengeti National Park and a major highway for the two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle that make up the Great Migration. The 350,000-acre reserve is leased to a foundation headed by the American philanthropist Paul Tudor Jones and has only five exclusive lodges and camps; Sasakwa is the most sumptuous. Resembling a stately Edwardian manor house, it encompasses ten cottages and a suite wrapped in verandas and lawns, as well as a stable of horses for riding alongside the herds, which mass on the Grumeti River in midsummer.

2. Cherero Camp, Serengeti National Park

Best for wildlife without the crowds Named after the African lovebird, this diminutive camp is another great spot for watching the wildebeest as they travel north on their annual migration along the Serengeti’s Western Corridor to the Mara River and into Kenya. Even when the wildebeest are elsewhere, the Big Five and other wildlife are here in abundance. The four canvas-and-teak tents are set apart from other properties, and guests can take full advantage of this peace and tranquillity, sitting out on their deck with a G&T and listening to the birds.

3. Mkombe’s House Lamai, Serengeti National Park

Best for families with young children The majority of safari camps and lodges are not set up for young children, but this exclusive-use sister property to the eight-room Lamai Serengeti was designed especially for them: there are two fenced-off pools (including one for infants and toddlers), the staff cook to order and game drives are when it suits. Set on a rocky outcrop with classic Serengeti views, the simple thatched-roof construction has two suites with rooms for up to six children leading off them, and the stylish interiors — by Arusha-based Joanna Cooke — integrate local crafts. River crossings of the Mara River (July to October) are nearby.

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti (Booking.com)

4. Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, Serengeti National Park

Best for full-service safari For those who like their creature comforts, the Four Seasons offers a familiar face in the middle of the Serengeti. The lodge has 72 spacious, air-conditioned rooms with private plunge pools, as well as five villas, a wine cellar, a spa, a well-equipped gym and 24-hour room service. The kids’ club offers tree-planting and mornings with a Masai warrior; activities include hot-air balloon rides and trips to the Ngorongoro Crater. Unusually for a high-end lodge, the full-board rates do not include game drives or other activities.

5. Mwiba Lodge, Southern Serengeti

Best for luxury in the southern Serengeti One of the most luxurious lodges in the country, Mwiba is located in a 130,000-acre concession leased to US billionaire Dan Friedkin and guests have it all to themselves. Set atop huge granite boulders with views across the Arugusinyai River, it has ten beautiful Scandi-cool tented suites with soaking tubs, a rim-flow pool, a spa, gym and wine cellar, and dining spots galore. The wildlife-viewing is exceptional, too, ranging from wild dogs by day and aardwolf by night, not to mention migrating wildebeest in nearby Ndutu from January to mid-March.

A Namiri Plains game drive with cheetah

6. Namiri Plains Camp, Serengeti National Park

Best for cheetah conservation For two decades, the grasslands of the eastern Serengeti, and the big cats that stalk them, were off-limits to tourists. Then Asilia Africa opened Namiri Plains here, and in 2019, the simple tented camp was relaunched with interiors by the Cape Town designer Caline Williams-Wynn and ten minimal-impact suites with outdoor tubs and views over the seasonal Ngare Nanyuki River. The Great Migration moves into the area between October and May and there are no other camps within an hour’s radius; guests can also spend an evening with the resident cheetah researcher.

7. Entamanu Ngorongoro, Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Best for the Ngorongoro Crater This Unesco-protected caldera and highland area are home to a dense concentration of game — including the critically endangered black rhino and flamingos on Lake Magadi — and a cluster of safari lodges and camps near its two entry points. Low-impact Entamanu is set slightly apart, but close enough to have astonishing views into the crater bowl and the Serengeti behind (the name means “circle” in the Masai language). The seven tents are furnished in a beautifully simple style that showcases African crafts, and activities include cultural visits and unforgettable Highland walks with a guide, a Masai scout and an armed ranger.

Banana-leaf ceilings at Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

8. Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Best for Ngorongoro theatrics This extravagantly luxurious lodge stands right on the crater rim with staggering views of the mist rising from the crater floor, 600m below. The Masai homestead-meets-baroque-château architecture and interiors are similarly dramatic, combining banana-leaf ceilings and Masai spears with wood-panelled walls, chandeliers and gilt. The 30 suites are split between three camps, each with its own lounge, dining area and private butlers. Game drives into the crater and visits to the Olduvai Gorge are complemented by wine tastings and in-room spa treatments.

Cultivating coffee at Gibbs Farm

9. Gibbs Farm, Karatu, Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Best for relaxing with the family This historic farm and coffee plantation on the forested outer slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater has deep roots in the local community, a swimming pool, a spa and 19 cottages and family houses in 15 acres of tropical and kitchen gardens filled with birdsong. Guests are encouraged to lend a hand with the cows and hike to the nearby elephant caves with a naturalist. But with Lake Manyara National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater within striking distance, game drives to both are also an option, returning for a delicious, homegrown supper in the charming farmhouse.

10. Elewana Tarangire Treetops, Tarangire National Park

Best for bird’s-eye views The southernmost national park in Tanzania’s “Northern Circuit”, Tarangire is a 2,600 sq km area known for its vast elephant herds and 1,000-year-old baobab trees — the central building at this 20-suite treehouse-style lodge on its border was built around one of them. As well as gazing out over the canopy and plains from their spacious suite and expansive balcony, guests can go on game drives, night drives and morning walks, examining plants and tracks and learning about indigenous cultures, all before breakfast in the bush. Dinner, meanwhile, is in a Masai-style “boma” (homestead), or poolside, watching the wildlife at the waterhole.

A giraffe wanders past Little Chem Chem

11. Little Chem Chem, Chem Chem Concession, Tarangire National Park

Best for a slow safari Chem Chem is a 40,000-acre private concession and wildlife corridor between Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara (a magnet for flamingos from November to April). The concession itself encompasses water holes, grasslands, a vast salt pan, and three stylish places to stay: the eight-suite Chem Chem Lodge, which has a spa and pool, the four-tent Forest Chem Chem, which works well for groups, and this six-tent camp, all run by French-Swiss couple Nicolas Negre and Fabia Bausch. Food is tasty and wholesome while activities include photographing elephants with Nicolas and sundowners on the edge of Lake Burunge.

12. Rubondo Island Camp, Rubondo Island National Park, Lake Victoria

Best for an island safari This eight-cottage camp is the only tourist accommodation on Rubondo, a 25km-long island off the southern shore of Lake Victoria. The national park is almost untouched by tourism, and a sanctuary for wildlife including chimpanzees (descended from the original 16 rescued from European zoos in the 1960s), elephants, giraffes, amphibious sitatunga antelope, hippos and 300 species of birds. As well as trekking chimps, guests can explore the forest on drives and walks and catch and release Nile perch on boat trips.

A chimpanzee in Mahale Mountains National Park (Getty Images)

13. Greystoke Mahale, Mahale Mountains National Park

Best for primate watching The Mahale Mountains in western Tanzania are famous for their chimps: there are some 800 of them here, around 75 of them habituated. Guests at this spectacular beach lodge on Lake Tanganyika are likely to spot other primate species, too, including red colobus, red-tailed monkeys and vervets. Dhow trips are good for bird watching as well as swimming, well away from the shallow water and encounters with hippos and crocs. The six wood-and-thatch bandas have an upper deck reached by steps carved in an old canoe, and sunset is watched from a bar on the rocks.

14. Chada Katavi, Katavi National Park

Best for out-there adventure This six-tent camp is way out west near Lake Tanganyika — guests often have it to themselves. Open from June to end October, it offers a changing wildlife spectacle as the Kakuma River dries up, the plains turn gold, and the remaining pools become increasingly contested by the huge numbers of hippos, while crocs hunker down in riverbank caves. The setup here is beautifully simple and life quickly becomes a mesmerising round of hot bucket showers, bush breakfasts and sundowners around the camp fire. For the full-on experience, opt for a bush walk out onto the vast Chada plain or a night’s fly-camping under the stars.

The infinity pool at Jabali Ridge

15. Jabali Ridge, Ruaha National Park

Best for a dramatic wilderness experience Jabali Ridge is Asilia Africa’s flagship property in central southern Tanzania, an eight-room lodge in the bewildering vastness of 20,226 sq km Ruaha National Park. Set on a rocky outcrop near the Mwagusi river, in a mesmerising landscape of baobabs, spiky palms and granite boulders, the spectacular lodge was devised by the contemporary designer Caline Williams-Wynn and the four-way infinity pool is the ideal spot for a sundowner while watching elephants below. The game viewing also includes big herds of buffalo and a resident pride of lions.

yellowzebrasafaris.com/tanzania/accommodation/lodges/jabali-ridge

16. Mwagusii Safari Camp, Ruaha National Park

Best for getting back to basics This comfortable, rustic camp sits on the banks of the seasonal Mwagusi River. The 13 spacious tents have high-pitched thatch roofs and polished red-stone floors and bathrooms of stone and driftwood; sandy paths lead to the lounge and dining area and library. The Tanzanian owner Chris Fox has set up an onsite guiding and hospitality training programme, and anti-poaching units are funded through a community and conservation trust. Game includes the elusive striped hyena and a multitude of birds.

17. Usangu Expedition Camp, Ruaha National Park

Best for a hands-on conservation safari The Great Ruaha River is the lifeblood of southeastern Tanzania, flowing from the Ruaha wilderness to the Kilombero River and Rufiji Delta to the ocean. Its source is the Usangu wetlands, where lion, leopard, hyena and wild dog hunt great herds of topi, roan and sable antelope. In July 2022, Asilia Africa opened a four-tented camp here, offering meals over a camp fire, night drives with thermal cameras (in safari vehicles that run on ethanol) and optional nights in a Star Cube. Guests can also take part in a biodiversity audit, monitoring wildlife sightings on camera traps and helping the local team to fit GPS collars.

Beho Beho

18. Beho Beho, Nyerere National Park

Best for biodiversity Formerly part of the Unesco-protected Selous Game Reserve, 30,000 sq km Nyerere National Park in southeastern Tanzania is now the largest national park in the country, home to the mighty Rufiji River, a huge variety of habitats and wildlife (including Africa’s largest population of wild dogs) and the controversial Stiegler’s Gorge Hydropower Project. This family-owned eight-room lodge is set on a hill above a tributary of the Beho Beho river, and offers a first-class safari experience, with superb guiding, a two-bedroom owner’s house, and a treehouse for honeymoon nights under the stars.

Serena Mivumo River Lodge (Booking.com)

19. Serena Mivumo River Lodge, Nyerere National Park

Best for riverside wildlife watching Life at this peaceful luxury lodge revolves around the Rufiji River: the 12 thatched chalets and one three-bedroom villa are set among the trees that grow up its banks, and the game-viewing includes watching hippos, crocs and elephant from the comfort and safety of a boat. The more active can also join guided wildlife or birding walks (more than 400 bird species have been recorded here), returning for an alfresco shower in the trees, or a dip in a private plunge pool. Other highlights include sundowners on the sandy riverbank and stargazing around the camp fire.

Roxanne Reid is an award-winning freelance writer and editor. She has published two books about African travel. Her Africa Addict blog focuses on African travel, people, safari, wildlife, culture and villages.

Serengeti National Park in Tanzania is a spectacular safari destination famous for the Big Five and big cat sightings. It’s also one of the best places to view the annual great migration that sees millions of wildebeest and zebra cross the endless plains in columns of dust. Watch predator–prey interactions, including crocodile that lie in wait at river crossings.

Although you can see animals year-round, the best time for a migration safari is June/July to October, when most of the river crossings happen. With a wealth of wildlife acting as a drawcard, there are many accommodations in the area. Here are 10 of the best Serengeti Luxury safari lodges and camps, in alphabetical order.

This is one of the most gorgeous places I have ever stayed. Words in a review will not come close to doing it justice. Tarangire Park is a very special place and Mpingo Ridge is the best camp to take advantage of it all. The view from this camp is simply stunning and one of a kind. The rooms are beyond spacious and comfortable. The white and natural decor is perfect for Africa. The highlight of our stay though was the kindness and friendliness of the staff. They were the most accomodating of any hotel I've stayed. They made us feel like family and we were sad to leave!

We were there for a two night stay for my wife's birthday and they helped me pull off the best birthday surprise ever. the room was amazing, the food was amazing and the staff were on point. juma, the head waiter made sure that we were well taken care of. talk about value for money, that was it., the place looks amazing and the staff is really nice, really warm people. if you are looking for a place to connect with nature this is it. it’s the place where you fall asleep to the sounds of the forest. the view from the top is breathtaking. despite the low temperature, everything is very cozy excellent food also i would visit again.

Tanzania Safaris

In Kilimanjaro's footprint, Tanzania mesmerizes with the great wildebeest migration and vast wildlife parks – a thrilling country for unforgettable safaris.

Tanzania

“We are seasoned off-the-beaten-track travellers and I marvel that everything worked exactly as it was supposed to”, wrote a recent traveller of his Expert Africa safari. “Here we were, in the middle of central Tanzania, waiting for a 10:05 flight. Guess what? At 10:03, there was the plane, buzzing animals off the grass runway, then touching down to pick us up. It happened every time. Dazzling!” The same traveller went on to describe visceral wildlife encounters: “Having a leopard on your tent porch is not something I will soon forget. This is not Disneyland.” Not Disneyland could be Tanzania’s national motto. “We had to keep pinching ourselves” wrote a first-time visitor, “that we were actually there, in the places we had only read about or seen on TV.” Tanzania makes a sensational impact. Over one-third of this expansive land is dedicated to safeguarding its diverse array of wildlife: an irresistible draw for the adventurous. A journey through Tanzania’s treasure trove of biodiversity can takes you through a medley of landscapes – from sweeping grasslands to dense tropical forests, from vibrant coral reefs to the sprawling Serengeti , a fortress for Africa's ‘big five’. Watch in awe as large herds of elephants stir clouds of dust in Ruaha National Park , hippos frolic in the rapids of the Rufiji River and chimpanzees play in the lofty domains of the Mahale Mountains . Underpinning this vivid tapestry of wildlife lie some of the world’s greatest geological splendours: the Great Rift Valley, the Ngorongoro Crater , the iconic Serengeti plains , all of which play a crucial role in shaping Tanzania’s diverse ecosystems. Tanzania’s tropical coast, sun-dappled beaches and scattering of islands are equally fascinating. Here cosmopolitan towns date back centuries to early trade routes and secluded Indian Ocean islands lie surrounded by white-sand beaches and colourful coral reefs. “Our eyes were wide with wonder from the moment we left the airstrip,” sighed a couple returning to Tanzania for the first time since their honeymoon 30 years earlier: “We had the most mind-blowing, amazing experience.”

Tanzania’s top safari & holiday destinations

Tanzania’s safari and beach areas fall naturally into four broad groups.

Tanzania's ‘Northern Circuit’ is the term which defines the areas of the sprawling Serengeti , the stunning landscape of the Ngorongoro Crater , Tarangire and Lake Manyara national parks – the most famous safaris areas in Tanzania.

For a quieter experience, Tanzania’s southern parks offer unspoiled wilderness areas dotted with a smaller number of safari camps. The lakes and waterways of Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous) offer magical boating safaris, while Ruaha ’s rugged terrain is excellent for walking safaris is home to a very strong population of lions.

Nearer to Africa’s heart, Western Tanzania is harder to reach, so few visitors come, but two parks are amazing. Katavi National Park protects a vast plain: the battleground for buffalo and lion, whilst an hour’s flight away, the spectacular Mahale Mountains rise sheer from the shores of Lake Tanganyika – providing probably the best place to track wild chimpanzees in Africa.

Lush and tropical, Tanzania’s coast & Islands are the venue for simple beach retreats to luxurious lodges – with the odd private island included.

When to go on a Tanzania safari

In recent years, Tanzania’s climate has become less predictable, but historically a broad-brush view of the seasons here has been:

July to October, the ‘ peak season ’, usually sees warm and dry days, with high game concentrations around water sources, including the famously spectacular river crossings of wildebeest in the northern Serengeti.

During November and December, the ‘ short rains ’, wildlife sightings remain plentiful, but expect sporadic showers. Migratory birds arrive as residents don breeding plumage and prices reduce from peak levels.

Tanzania’s ‘ short dry season ’, January to mid-March, can be hot and humid, particularly at the coast. The wildlife is generally scattered. In the Serengeti, the wildebeest are calving across the short-grass plains of the south.

The frequent downpours of the ‘ long rains ’ last from about mid-March to early June. Some safari camps close, but lower prices and fewer visitors do attract the cognoscenti.

Click on the months below for more detail, see Tanzania’s historical climate data and talk to us about recent variations!

Tanzania in January

January usually marks the start of the short dry season, although the exact timings of this are a little unpredictable. You can expect clear blue skies and sunshine, if the short rains have stopped, and the temperatures will be building. The short dry season is a little less pronounced in Southern Tanzania, and so it can still be wet in these areas. It is an interesting time for avians as resident birds go into breeding plumage and migrant species can be present. Once the New Year busy period has quietened down, January can offer great value and quieter parks, although the weather can be variable, and in the Selous and Ruaha the wildlife is more dispersed.

  • Variable weather: clear & dry or cloudy with some rain.
  • Occasional thunderstorms may occur.
  • A good time of year for birding as and many migrant species are around
  • The wildebeest migration is gathering in the southern Serengeti.
  • Busy in early January, quietening down through the month.

A good time to visit, with pros & cons

Weather in January

Tanzania in February

February is during the short dry season and is one of the hottest months in Tanzania, with temperatures reaching around 33°Celsius. This can be a good time to visit, as some areas of the Northern Circuit are comparatively quieter than during the European summer months, and lodge rates are also a little lower. The wildebeest will typically be on the southern plains of the Serengeti for their calving season, which tends to occur in a 2-3 week window in early-mid February – although this does vary year on year. This is also a particularly rewarding time for birdlife, as northern hemisphere migrants join the resident species.

  • Hot and dry weather.
  • Wildebeest migration calving on Serengeti’s southern plains.
  • Ngorongoro Crater and southern Serengeti busy for the migration.
  • Selous and Ruaha are typically quiet at this time.
  • The parks are likely to be lush and green, leading to pretty landscape

A very good time to visit

Weather in February

Tanzania in March

The heavier ‘long rains’ start in earnest in March although exactly when varies year on year. With no need to stay close to permanent water sources, migratory wildlife disperses, and so game viewing starts to become more challenging. This is most prominently seen in Tarangire National Park. The wildebeest migration may still be calving, or have moved on into the central regions of the Serengeti. Many of the camps in the southern parks close mid March and mobile tented camps in the Serengeti will wind down towards the end of the month in order to move location or carry out refurbishments, ready for the new tourist season.

  • Hot with building humidity, before the rains begin at some point.
  • Wildlife viewing is variable depending on the start of the rains.
  • Parks are quiet and rates are low.
  • Not great for southern or western Tanzania.
  • March can be a good time for birding, with many migrant species.

Weather in March

Tanzania in April

April is in the middle of the long rainy season and is the wettest month, with on average 250mm of rain. Temperatures are fairly high and humid in comparison to the rest of the year. Expect the bush to be lush and flowering, and alive with insects, birds and smaller animals. It is however also dense, allowing wildlife to hide, which in turn makes game viewing harder. This is a very quiet time in terms of visitor numbers. Many of the tented camps are closed in April, however the larger lodges remain open. The rates are significantly cheaper, and so if you are willing to work harder to spot the bigger game, some accommodation bargains can be had.

  • Heavy rain expected, with impressive thunderstorms and lightning.
  • Many camps closed and roads impassable due to ground conditions.
  • Rates are at their lowest all year round, with very few other tourists
  • Places that are open are green and vibrant, wildlife more dispersed.

This is not a great time to visit

Weather in April

Tanzania in May

As Tanzania is close to the equator there is no dramatic difference in climate throughout the year, but temperatures do start to drop a little in May. The rains are likely to still be present, although potentially clearing towards the end of the month. Visitor numbers and lodge rates are still low. The wildebeest migration is making its way through the western regions of the Serengeti, crossing the Grumeti River. Virtually all camps in southern Tanzania remain closed, and many of the roads and tracks in the Selous become impassable.

  • Heavy rains and storms are likely, this can create some dramatic skies
  • Blissfully quiet in northern Tanzania, and a good time to avoid crowds
  • The parks are likely to look lush and green, with long grass.
  • Wildlife is likely to be more dispersed, with fewer sightings.
  • The low prices make safaris much more affordable at this time.

Weather in May

Tanzania in June

The rains come to an end at some point during the month and migratory wildlife begins to be drawn back to perennial water sources as the land starts to dry up. It’s likely that the parks will still be quite green and the grass high though, so walking and fly-camping may be unlikely. This marks the start of the season with camps reopening, but prices are still more affordable than the subsequent months. The migration may still be in the Western Corridor, or on the move northwards towards the Mara River. Western Tanzania presents more challenging conditions for chimpanzee trekking in Mahale National Park, as the chimps are higher in the mountains.

  • A transitory time for the migration – moving from west to north.
  • The parks may still be quite green, and grasses high.
  • Wildlife may be dispersed still.
  • Relatively low visitor numbers and good value, shoulder season prices.

Weather in June

Tanzania in July

July is considered to be the start of the peak season, with no rainfall expected and pleasant daytime temperatures. As the parks dry, the wildlife congregates in fewer areas, grass is eaten and trampled by the migration, and game viewing gets better and better. The wildebeest are typically arriving in the northern Serengeti, ready to begin their period of crossings of the Mara River. In the Selous and Ruaha wildlife sightings can be fantastic, with animals gathering around the lakes and rivers. Great conditions and school holidays mean the parks are at their busiest, with Ngorongoro and the Serengeti particularly crowded.

  • Dry and warm daytimes, chilly and windy in the mornings and evenings.
  • Great wildlife viewing, as water sources diminish.
  • The most popular time of year with very high visitor numbers.
  • Prices are at their highest due to the great conditions on the ground.
  • To avoid the crowds consider Tanzania’s southern parks.

Fantastic: the very best time to visit

Weather in July

Tanzania in August

August is the middle of the long dry season, with clear skies and sunny weather. You can expect some cooler weather at night and first thing in the morning. Remember to pack layered clothing, so you can wrap up warm on your early morning game drives, but remain comfortable as it heats up throughout the day. August is a very popular time to visit, so accommodation prices are at their highest and advanced booking is necessary. It can get noticeably busier in some of the northern parks – in particular the Ngorongoro Crater and northern Serengeti, as visitors flock to the area in hope of witnessing an exciting migration river crossing.

  • Dry and warm daytimes, chilly in the early mornings and evenings.
  • General wildlife viewing should be excellent.
  • An exciting time of year for the wildebeest migration.
  • Certain areas will be very busy and camps fill up fast.
  • Great wildlife sightings in the Selous and Ruaha, and fewer people.

Weather in August

Tanzania in September

September can be an excellent time of year to visit Tanzania. As the parks continue to dry up the wildlife becomes increasingly reliant on the remaining water sources, leading to high densities of animals. Whilst early September can be busy, with fewer families traveling at this time the parks typically become quieter as the month goes on. You are still likely to see the wildebeest migration in the northern Serengeti, with river crossings occurring on a regular basis. Tanzania’s southern parks are also fantastic at this time of year, generally receiving far fewer visitors than the north, and wildlife sightings can be great. Prices remain high and the weather generally remains good.

  • Wildlife viewing in September can be fantastic.
  • Whilst still fairly busy, often the parks are typically a little quiet
  • The parks will start to become very dry, with little new vegetation
  • Cooler mornings and evenings, warming up during the day.
  • Prices remain high.

Weather in September

Tanzania in October

At the tail end of the dry season, the wildlife should be the easiest to spot, although photographers should be aware that it can be a bit dusty at this time of year, as there has been no rain for several months. Great general wildlife viewing throughout as animals are attracted to remaining sources of water. Elephant numbers are particularly high at this time in Tarangire, and Mahale and Katavi are especially rewarding with frequent wildlife sightings close to camp. There is a chance of rainfall towards the end of the month, if the short rains commence. While prices remain high, visitors numbers are significantly lower than in July-August.

  • Mostly dry and temperatures comfortably warm, with the chance of storm
  • Great game viewing although the landscape can be a bit barren.
  • Much lower visitor numbers than the earlier months.

Weather in October

Tanzania in November

In November you can expect the start of the short rains, although the start date varies every year. The rains are highly localised, and are much lighter and more unpredictable than the long rains that occur earlier in the year. These should not really interfere with your safari – as the game viewing at this time is still good - but you should pack a waterproof jacket and be prepared for some short rain showers! The majority of tented camps remain open, but some of the mobile camps in Northern Tanzania will close for the latter half on the month. Given the seasonality, camps are charging shoulder season rates so there are often some bargains to be had. Early November can offer great value for money and the weather conditions are likely to be comparable to late October.

  • Parks are comparatively quiet and prices at the lower end.
  • Some camps will close towards the end of the month for maintenance.
  • Good wildlife sightings, but animals will disperse when rain starts
  • The wildebeest migration is on the move and the location unpredictable

Weather in November

Tanzania in December

December is also during the short rainy period, but this does not stop Tanzania being a popular destination to spend the festive period. Be aware that many of the lodges book up early, and charge peak rates over this time. Advanced booking is essential over this period, especially if travelling in larger family groups. Travelling in December outside of the festive period allows travellers to make use of excellent shoulder season rates. Temperatures are pleasant with the averages of 27Celsius, although there is the chance of intermittent thunderstorms.

  • Variable weather:clear & dry or cloudy with some rain and thunderstorm
  • Good general game viewing in parks with low seasonality - Serengeti.
  • Very quiet early in the month, becoming exceptionally busy.
  • Prices reflect this – great value rising to the highest they are.
  • The wildlife in southern Tanzania is more dispersed.

Weather in December

Maps of the main regions for a Tanzania safari

Two different maps can help you to understand Tanzania:The GOOGLE MAP shows Tanzania's remarkable landscape, spanning 900,000km2 from vast grasslands to its extensive coastline, whilst our REFERENCE MAP clearly outlines the national parks.

In northern Tanzania , the remarkable wildlife sanctuary of the Ngorongoro Crater rises beside a huge crack in the earth’s crust, the Rift Valley Escarpment, which splits the landscape and bounds the soda-lakes of Lake Manyara and Lake Natron . Nearby, at Olduvai Gorge , the same geology protects some of the earliest hominin fossils ever discovered.

Southern Tanzania ’s two main parks are far apart. The flat Nyerere National Park , dominated by many waterways of the mighty Rufiji River, contrasts with the huge, rolling plateau of Ruaha National Park .

More remote still, in western Tanzania , lie the plains of Katavi National Park and the mountainous sloes of the tropical forests in Mahale Mountains , on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

Off Tanzania’s tropical Indian Ocean coastline lie the ‘spice islands’ of Zanzibar and Pemba ; the laid-back Mafia Island , and many tiny satellites, like the private islands of Fanjove , Chumbe and Mnemba .

Usangu Expedition Camp Website8

Location of Usangu Expedition Camp

The Usangu Wetland features a permanent water source in its centre, the Ihefu Swamp, surrounded by grassy marshlands and floodplains. During the dry season, only the Ihefu Swamp offers water but, as the rainy season develops, the wetland expands to cover an enormous area. On the outer limits of the wet season high-water mark, the miombo forest thrives and provides the perfectly shaded location for Usangu Expedition Camp.

The Usangu Wetland is an essential feature to the Ruaha-Rungwa ecosystem, with major implications for ecosystems thousands of kilometres away from the wetland itself. Its features are unique and under the proper conditions and health, the biodiversity of species is undeniably a treasure trove. Herds of roan and sable roam the vast wetland, and wild dogs run wide along rivers.

Hundreds of ostrich congregate in a way that is not often seen in other places in Africa. Thousands of migratory bird species pass through the wetland as well as unidentified amphibians, still waiting to be discovered.

Location

A safari like no other

Ruaha’s wildlife is renowned throughout East Africa and we aim to provide the best opportunities — from game drives to walking safaris — for all kinds of animal sightings. Explore this little-known area within Ruaha: go boating through the waterways, and walk the wide-open grasslands.

A typical day on safari at Usangu Expedition Camp

Usangu Expedition Camp offers a wide variety of activities, allowing for your days to be tailored around your preferred interests. Each group in camp has a private vehicle and guide, allowing for complete flexibility within daily structure. Early mornings are typically best for game drives and walking safaris while the temperatures are slightly cooler, and wildlife is more active. Mid-afternoons are the perfect time to relax under the trees with a book or, or the more active, visit the Douglas Bell Eco Research Station for a first-hand explanation about the conservation work and research being conducted in the wetlands. Afternoons offer the opportunity for boating safaris or spending time in the field with a researcher.

Breakfast is often a picnic to allow for an early start from camp, but lunch can either be enjoyed in camp under the cool shade, or a picnic can be provided for those who wish to stay out longer. Whether you are in the main camp or a star cube in the Trails Camp, dinner is prepared on the open fire in a communal setting.

Asilia Africa Usangu A Typical Day 2023

Game drives

The best times to depart on a game drive are early morning and late afternoon to avoid the midday heat when animals are less active. With your private vehicle and guide, you have the flexibility to explore any (accessible) area of the Usangu wetlands. Usangu has five biozones and offers many different habitat types that are waiting to be explored.  Our up-cycled Land Rovers have been re-built from the ground up and are powered by green alcohol fuel (ethanol). This five-seater, safari vehicle offers unobstructed views — built for comfort, bush driving and remarkable off-road capability.

Game Drives

Walking safaris

Walking safaris give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, away from the noise of the land cruiser and closer to the ground to observe the smaller and less obvious parts of the African wilderness. This is a completely different way to experience the bush, encouraging your senses to engage as you spot tiny but fascinating creatures you’d never see from the vehicle.

Walking Safaris

Night drives

See a different side of Usangu with a night drive. It’s a special opportunity to spot shy, nocturnal animals and the those that prey on them, and with the night vision camera available to guests, you can snap them in action. With the aid of your knowledgeable guide, keep your eyes out for leopard, genet, serval, honey badger, civet and African wildcats on the hunt; as well as bush babies, mongoose, bat-eared fox, nightjars and owls going about their business. Don’t forget to take a moment to a gaze up at the breath-taking night sky.

Usangu — Witness The Amanzing Night Sky And Milky Way From Your Tent

Boating safaris

The wetland area and the intricate waterways that swell and contract throughout the season create a variety of conditions for boating. Our swamp boat is designed for these marsh-like conditions, offering the opportunity to explore the wetland narrow waterways year-round. Elephant are regularly seen along the shallows, and the birdlife is fantastic.

Usangu — Usangu Is A Seasonal Wetland And Combines Riverine Areas With A Swamp Lake

Camera Traps

The placement of camera traps in close proximity to frequently used game trails provide useful information about wildlife numbers and the movements of game. On arrival, you will receive a camera trap to place near camp for the duration of your stay. On your last afternoon in camp, retrieve the images to see what your camera has captured.

Family safaris

We welcome families with children over 12 years old. If the camp is booked on an exclusive use basis, younger children can be accommodated, but participation in walking activities will not be permitted.

What to expect during the year

Usangu is open from June to November, when it’s hot and dry. During this time, the Usangu wetlands recede, and the surrounding grasslands dry out into wide open spaces ideal for walking. The rains that fall from November until April transform the landscape, making it green and lush but also creating logistical problems as the road networks become water-logged and the rising floodplains limit land-based activities.

Why travel at this time

The long rains have now passed, and the park is lush and green. The waters are still high, making it an excellent time for canoeing.

June marks the start of the dry season however temperatures are still comfortable at this early stage in the season. The average high is 26°C/79°F, with a low of 13°C/55°F.

Low Temp: 13°C / 55°F

High Temp: 25°C / 77°F

Rainfall: 109mm / 4.3in

The wetlands and floodplains recede during this driest time of the year, making it an excellent environment for walking. This is the best time for game viewing as wildlife is attracted to the permanent water source.

There’s no rainfall in the dry season with temperatures rising to an average high of 26°C/79°C in July, up to 28°C/82°F in September. The average lows are 13°C/55°F to 15°C/59°F.

Low Temp: 12°C / 54°F

Rainfall: 42mm / 1.7in

October is the peak of the dry season, delivering excellent game viewing and walking conditions. The rains usually arrive in November, bringing respite from the heat and starting the transformation as Usangu returns to a wetland.

October is hot and dry, with increasing humidity as the rains approach. November continues to be hot, but the arrival of afternoon showers and thunderstorms offer some relief to the parched landscape. The temperature hits a maximum average of 30°C/86°F in October and November, dropping to an average low of 17°C/63°F.

High Temp: 27°C / 81°F

Rainfall: 99mm / 3.9in

More rain in December means that the landscape is greener. Wildlife viewing is good, particularly for plains game and big cats. In January, the rains are likely to increase, but the game viewing is still excellent.

Rainfall is infrequent and light at the beginning of December, increasing into January. It's still hot, with temperatures reaching 28°C / 82°F.

GUEST REVIEWS

A different kind of safari! We were attracted by the remoteness of Usangu Expedition Camp and its focus on conservation and research having only relatively recently formed part of the national park. We were not disappointed with all that the camp delivered during a 4 night stay.

Tripadvisor 1

What a magical place. Incredible location and the rooms team and food was amazing. The views from the room were something else and loved eating around the fire at night. Whilst you might not see the number of animals at more popular destinations this is a much more personal approach and makes it all the more magical. Whole heartedly recommend and it feels like we have left friends behind in the team there.
Absolutely incredible experience from start to finish. Such a unique opportunity and experience - extremely special if you're interested in research. Staff were utterly incredible and feels so exciting being a part of such a new project. Cannot recommend enough.

Accommodation

Wilderness Usawa Serngeti Map Tanzania

The seasonal migration moves throughout the year across the length and breadth of Serengeti National Park. Though reasonably predictable, herd movements are dictated by rain and tend to migrate from the south in a north-westerly direction, before making their way up north around September. From there, the journey begins back to the south. It is along these routes that Wilderness Usawa moves.

THE DETAILS

Mobile, dynamic, luxurious, the Wilderness Usawa Serengeti experience offers maximum action without compromising on comfort. In close proximity to wildlife, but set away from the high density tourist spots, the exquisite architecture and mindful design of Wilderness Usawa Serengeti’s tented camp invites a more remote and private East African experience.

All inclusive rates

Intimate, exclusive, and light on the Earth, Wilderness Usawa Serengeti is made up of two mobile camps which accommodate 12 guests each, in six luxurious safari tents. Each tent is tastefully finished, equipped with an en-suite bathroom, personal coffee bar and safari-style furnishings, while the open-plan main area opens out over the plains, with classic Serengeti views in every direction.

10 Best Resorts And Safari Camps In Tanzania

Tanzania is an extraordinary mix of vast open plains stocked with great game and a land of spices, souks, pristine beaches and bazaars. In terms of accommodation, there are so many wonderful places to stay in Tanzania, but here are just a few of our favourite luxury resorts and safari camps that you should consider including for your next holiday to Tanzania.

1. Singita Sasakwa, Serengeti

Occupying a prime location in the Grumeti Game Reserve overlooking the endless plains of the Serengeti, Singita Sasakwa Lodge is a spectacular base for your safari. Luxury is around every corner here, within the spacious cottages with their own private pools, the spacious manor house and on the veranda overlooking the plains. You can be assured of the very best service and guides, coupled with memorable meals making a truly incredible safari experience.

2. The Palms, Zanzibar

Located on one of the best beaches in the world, Bwejuu, The Palms is a true Robinson Crusoe experience. White sand, deep blue sea, constant sunshine, tropical gardens, private thatched bandas on the beach and just six luxury villas, each with their own large verandah, butler and private plunge pool – this is what makes The Palms so special. It’s a hedonistic haven for those wishing to relax and recharge after the exertions of a safari.

3. The Highlands, Ngorongoro

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is about much more than the famous, eponymous crater and at The Highlands you can explore more of this region than is usually possible from other camps. The accommodation is in uniquely designed dome-shaped suites with large glass fronts to reveal the spectacular views.  It can get cold at this high-altitude camp and a wood-burning stove keeps the suite cosy. A truly one of a kind property.

4. Azura Selous, Selous Game Reserve

In a remote part of the Selous, Africa's largest game reserve, Azura Selous is located far from most of the reserve's lodges providing an exclusive safari experience in this beautiful, wild piece of Africa. The lodge itself is a haven of peace and tranquillity overlooking the rapids of the Ruaha River. Relax by the infinity pool or in your supremely comfortable and private tented villa, soaking in your plunge pool with a cold drink, revelling in the natural beauty of the African wilderness.

5. &Beyond Mnemba Island Lodge, Zanzibar

An exquisite island paradise off the north east tip of Zanzibar, &Beyond Mnemba Island Lodge is regarded as one of the best beach destinations in the world. Ten luxury bandas dot the perfect white coral sand beach while traditional Zanzibar beach beds wait on the sand. Undoubtedly expensive but everything is included in the cost, from cutting-edge food and laundry to all scuba diving.

6. Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, Serengeti

Visiting the Serengeti does not have to be an under canvas experience and at the Four Seasons Safari Lodge one can enjoy the excellent game viewing in the central Seronera area and then return to the luxuries and modern comforts at the lodge. The lodge caters very well for both couples and families and the first class facilities include a spa with six free-standing treatment pavilions, a fitness centre, educational discovery centre, kids club and an infinity edge swimming pool.

7. Ras Kutani, Tanzania Mainland Coast

Set on a beautiful beach, Ras Kutani is a barefoot hideaway at which to relax after your safari adventures. Accommodation is in nine thatched beach cottages all with ocean views and a verandah complete with hammock for those lazy moments. The four suites offer more privacy located as they are on the hillside amongst the trees and with views down to the ocean and feature private plunge pools. The two bedroom Hill House is perfect for families and is set on a hill with wonderful sea views.

8. &Beyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge, Manyara

From the acclaimed &Beyond stable, &Beyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge is the only lodge actually located within the Lake Manyara National Park. Accommodation consists of lofty tree houses with private verandahs and large windows that open up to the lush forest, welcoming in the sights and sounds of the African bush. The spacious bedrooms and sitting rooms float in a sea of green, opening up onto a leafy canopy. Even a soak in the tree houses' large, free-standing tubs offer a panoramic view, with open air showers behind simple bamboo screens. A truly magical experience.

9. Sand River Selous, Selous Game Reserve

One of the original and arguably still the finest safari lodge in the remote Selous Game Reserve, Sand Rivers Selous offers a wonderfully varied safari experience. 8 open fronted rooms look out onto the river making them an ideal spot to pass an afternoon between safari activities. The variety of wildlife is what draws many people to stay here and with a variety of ways to view it, guests are assured of a truly unique safari experience.

10. Tarangire Treetops, Tarangire

Tarangire Treetops effortlessly blends the luxuries of a modern safari with the almost childlike nostalgia of a treehouse and the sense of adventure that comes with sleeping up in the tree canopy. The rooms are enormous and have their own private decking areas at the front which are a very popular spot to relax and while away an afternoon, perhaps enjoying some ad-hoc game viewing in the process. One of the best safari lodges in Tanzania and would grace any itinerary around the famed Northern Circuit.

8 Most Charming Places in Tanzania

Found along the coast of East Africa is the great nation of Tanzania . Not the most well-known country in Africa, Tanzania has quietly become one of the upstart places in Africa, boasting a burgeoning and booming tourism industry. Known for its breathtaking landscape, white sand beaches, and vibrant culture, Tanzania is surely to make a good first impression.

Ruaha National Park

A lone giraffe standing in the grasslands at Ruaha National Park.

Ruaha National Park is the largest nature reserve in Tanzania. In 2008, it merged with the neighboring Usangu Game Reserve, now covering more than 20,000km². There are campsites located all over the park, which make for perfect vantage points from which to see the wildlife up close.

Going on a safari here is like no other. There are endless ways to explore the park, all with a warm and helpful guide to help along the way. Most of these safaris are done from the safety of a car, whereas others are conducted on boats. The animals that you will see and the people that you will meet are going to create memories that last a lifetime.

Mahale Mountains National Park

A chimpanzee in the Mahale Mountains.

Another one of Tanzania's stellar national parks, the Mahale Mountains, is located along the tranquil shores of Lake Tanganyika in eastern Tanzania. Initially created to protect a large segment of Tanzania's chimpanzee population, the park has become a world-class tourist destination.

The Greystone Mahale Camp is particularly stunning. This one-of-a-kind lodge is the perfect place to go on a romantic getaway with your significant other. There are, of course, plenty of guided tours inland to observe and occasionally interact with the various groups of chimpanzees that call the park home.

Nyerere National Park

Aerial view of Nyerere national Park in Tanzania

Located on in Eastern Tanzania, the Nyerere National Park transports its guests into the thick of the African savannah . Guests can enjoy this park any way they want. There are traditional safaris, boat safaris, and even the option to survey the park from a hot air balloon.

Tours into the bush are also available. This allows guests to observe the wildlife up close and personal. It also gives visitors the chance to visit some of the remote villages that are located within the park. The locals here are famous for their warm demeanor and hospitality .

Mafia Island

Beach resort on Mafia island in Tanzania.

Despite its name having a somewhat foreboding name, Mafia Island couldn't be further removed from any semblance of violence or organized crime. Located along the east coast of Tanzania, Mafia Island's pristine beaches and crystal blue water are nothing short of magical.

Mafia Island's beaches are a hotspot for nesting turtles, and its shallow waters teem with marine life. For those daring enough, the best months to spot whale sharks are from October to February. Even if aquatic life is not to your taste, the laid-back and peaceful nature of the island is enough to make this a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Two elephants grazing beneath Mount Kilimanjaro.

Sitting along its northern border with Kenya is Mount Kilimanjaro , the largest mountain in Africa. Sitting at roughly 5,895 meters (19,340 feet) tall, Kilimanjaro looms over the vast plains of the African savannah.

Climbing to the summit of the mountain is no easy feat, but reaching the top is certainly worth it. For those who have no interest in hiking up Kilimanjaro, there is a fantastic national park available. The park offers tons of tours led by accommodating and friendly guides.

Lake Manyara National Park

Two zebras wading into Lake Manyara.

Found in the north of Tanzania, Lake Manyara National Park is another great destination for those wanting to get a closer look at the spectacular African wildlife. There are numerous tours available that grant visitors the chance to observe herds of elephants , curious giraffes, and even lion pride.

Aside from the traditional methods of looking at wildlife, there is also a tree-top canopy walk in some places. This gives the park's guests a new and unique way of viewing different kinds of primates and exotic birds. It is a great place to take friends and family.

Ngorongoro Crater

Safari in Ngorongoro Crater National Park. Tanzania.

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the world's largest inactive volcanic caldera . The surrounding area is teeming with wildlife and is the perfect place to go if you want to experience a more traditional safari. The land is home to all the stable animals one would expect, along with the semi-nomadic Maasai nomads who still live and hunt in the area.

There are dozens of high-end resorts guests have to choose from. If staying at a resort is not to your liking, then there are various campsites set up throughout the park that all come with a surprising amount of comfort despite being in the middle of the wilderness. The staff who work at these accommodations are more than happy to help and assist wherever they are needed.

A small fishing town within the Zanzibar Archipelago.

The Zanzibar Archipelago is located off the east coast of Tanzania. There is a lot to do in Zanzibar, and it has quietly become one of the most prominent tourist destinations in Tanzania. Whether you are looking for a relaxing time at the beach or want to explore the city itself, there is something here for everyone.

The Nakupenda Beach Nature Reserve is a great place to visit, especially for wadding in the warm turquoise blue water and shallow sandbank that the island is famous for. The old quarter of Zanzibar is another great attraction. Filled with a rich history and Arabian-infused architecture and culture, the city of Zanzibar is one of the more unique places in Africa. Its charm and energy are apparent the moment you arrive.

Discover Tanzania’s Hidden Charms

Tanzania is one of the best-kept secrets of Africa. Home to an endless amount of attractions and entertainment, it is no wonder more people are deciding to come and visit every year. I am on your trip. Hi Nannie! LOL.

Was trying to find some positive news!!

' class=

On FB I follow Telescopic Weather that reports weather predictions for Kenyan farmers using various world models and here's today's post that looks a bit promising

"This week on weather, the rain season ends in Taita Taveta, lower makueni, lower machakos, lower kitui, tana river County, isiolo and the whole of North eastern kenya.

The stagnant low pressure system that has caused havoc in Nairobi , central kenya and Rift Valley continues for another week bringing more untold misery to already, tired, frightened and harassed residents.

We expect most rains to end by the second week of May. There will still be some rains later in may and June but these will mostly be showers .

El Nino is weakening rapidly and will be done by 15th May."

safari camps in tanzania

For safari tourists, this means that some roads may be impassable, and typical safari experiences can be heavily disrupted. The rains can lead to altered animal behaviors and visibility issues, which can detract from the wildlife viewing that attracts many visitors to Kenya. Additionally, the Kenya Meteorological Department has issued warnings for high winds and advised precautions against potential hazards like flash floods and lightning strikes (The Star).

Tour operators and visitors need to stay updated with local weather forecasts and possibly adjust their plans accordingly to ensure safety and make the most of their visit despite the challenging conditions.

Living in Nairobi , many parts of Nairobi National Park are impassable. The Mai Mahu Road to Naivasha has experienced some landslides, and the water levels at Lake Nakuru have increased significantly due to the heavy rains in the region. The area of the lake has expanded from 43 square kilometers in 2012 to about 75 square kilometers recently. This expansion has led to the submersion of approximately 29.6 square kilometers of the surrounding park area. The rise in lake levels has caused extensive damage to the Lake Nakuru National Park affecting wildlife habitats. The rising water levels are attributed to seasonal rainfall, increased land degradation leading to higher runoff, and regional tectonic activities.

Your tour operator will operate safari's with your safety in mind.

Thanks for sharing an excellent & concise report ! 👌

A quick Google search will show latest media reports that more torrential rains are expected.

The latest, 'on the ground' feedback from local TOs, the roads inside the Parks are extremely slippery & muddy requiring a land cruiser (4x4).

Top 10 Safari Parks in Africa

C an't decide where do you want to start your next (or first) safari in Africa? We collected the top 10 safari parks in Africa places to see wild African animals in their natural habitat. If you want to know what to be on the lookout for, read our article on the top 10 safari animals you can spot on your travels!

There's always more to explore so feel free to check out our article on the top 10 countires for safaris! For some Safari fun you can check our blog post on how a Family Safari completely errupted into chaos!

Read ahead or jump to any section that interests you:

Introduction

A safari (Swahili: journey) in one of Africa's national parks is an exciting thing: many people can observe a larger number of wild animals and even have the oppurtunity to see the famous Big 5 of africa.

The focus is on the savannah and bush landscapes, where savannah elephants , lions , buffalos , and other well-known wild animals feel at home.

Whether it's Africa for the first time or safari connoisseurs, there should be something for everyone. And it attracts attention: There is no best destination in Africa, but there are the best destinations.

So, where should the next safari lead?

10th place: Amboseli National Park, Kenya

Where else can wild animals be observed in front of one of the most famous mountains on earth? The Amboseli National Park at the foot of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania serves both as a postcard motif for Africa and as a photographic object. Giraffes, elephants and all sorts of other wild animals strut in front of the snow-covered summit of the "Kili" and give great photo motives.

Ancient elephants still live in the park. This allows visitors to observe the almost intact social behavior of the pachyderms in their herds.

The Kilimanjaro usually wraps itself in thick clouds during the day. The chances of seeing it are best in the morning and evening.

9th place: Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa

Number 9 on the top 10 safari parks in Africa is Addo. Known for, as the name suggests, its elephants, the Addo is more than a convenient destination near South Africa's Garden Route. The park is home to lions again after a resettlement program; black rhinos and leopards are also found here. Due to the extension to the south, the coast with its sharks and whales is also part of the park, which now advertises with the "Big 7".

In conclusion, the park is ideal for exploring with your own (rental) car. Please make sure to ask in advance what you have to consider for the self-drive safari.

In addition, holidaymakers in their cars should ensure they do not run over pill turners (African dung beetles), hundreds of which run across the roads depending on the weather.

8th Place: Etosha National Park, Namibia

Namibia's most important park is home to countless wildlife, including the white and black rhino who are critically endangered, something you can read more about in one of our other articles about these ancient and disappearing creatures. There are also several predatory cat species and many antelopes. "Etosha" means "big white square," which describes the landscape well. The vegetation is extremely sparse; in the dry season, many animals gather at artificial waterholes.

In the dry season, many animals can easily be observed at the park water holes and camps. 114 different species of mammals live in the park.

Every coin has two sides: The park is completely fenced in and cuts the animals off their original routes in search of water in the Kuene region. The waterholes are not comparable to the actual environment and natural migration behavior for true lovers.

7th place: Tarangire National Park, Tanzania

The Tarangire National Park is one of the most underestimated parts of the continent. Many visitors only make a short stop at the Serengeti or do not ebaobabven include the national park in their travel plans. But the park is home to large herds of elephants and many other species in a remarkable landscape of boabab trees.

The park is known for its elephant herds, which run through a prehistoric landscape along the Tarangire River.

The park is home to the tsetse fly, which transmits sleeping sickness. Visitors should urgently pay attention to consistent protection.

6th place: Chobe National Park, Botswana

"Land of the Giants" is written on the sign at the park entrance and already announces the park's main attraction: Elephants, one of the savannah's most social creatures . Between 80,000 and 100,000 pachyderms are estimated to live in the park and adjacent areas, where they migrate depending on the season.

Botswana pursues an exemplary animal and species conservation policy and no longer kills elephants if they become too numerous for the ecosystem. Instead, fences were dismantled to create more space for the animals. Kaffir buffalos and warthogs are also common. As a result, always check the weather forecast before you go.

A safari with the boat on the Chobe river belongs to the experiences, which holiday-makers surely do not forget so fast.

During the high season the Chobe River can be very narrow.

5th place: South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

On the Luangwa River, the wilderness awaits: no fences, no radios to communicate with the rangers. Those who travel to the South Luangwa National Park will experience the bush unadorned, without much traffic and wild. It is not uncommon for your own jeep to be the only one at a spectacular sighting, giving visitors more time and peace to enjoy the encounter with the animals. Night safaris and bushwalks, i.e. safaris on foot, are allowed in the national park.

Pure wilderness. The park is known for its hippos and leopards . Many camps are not fenced and often wild animals run through the lodges. The park is also home to numerous endemic species and subspecies, i.e. animals that can only be found here. Sometimes you can even see the endangered Pangolins and the even more threatened Rhinos . Two species of Animals we explore in more detail in another article.

These include the Cookson gnu, the Crawshay zebra and the Thorneycroft giraffe.

The season plays an important role in the South Luangwa National Park. While in the dry season many large wild animals gather at the water and are so easy to discover, during the rainy season bird lovers get their money's worth.

4th place: Kruger National Park, South Africa

For most vacationers the Kruger National Park is the first safari experience in the African bush . It is one of the largest national parks on the continent and is home to a wide variety of wildlife. In contrast to the open savannahs in East Africa, the landscape is bushy and the animals are harder to spot.

This may be described as the best South African Safari.

In the Kruger National Park live some very rare animal species like wild dogs. Another animal worth further exploration in another one of our articles.

Animals in Vermont

The good infrastructure, the developed roads and the fences around the national park make it clear that the park is used and marketed commercially.

This partly causes a lot of traffic in the park and has at some corners only little to do with the real wilderness feeling.

3rd place: Ngorongoro Nature Reserve, Tanzania

While driving over the edge of the burglary crater into the nature reserve, visitors can rarely suppress the "wow" that involuntarily comes over their lips. The view can take your breath away. The safari through the crater, which has the highest predator density in Africa, becomes the photographic highlight of many Africa journeys.

The wildlife hike through Masai Mara and Serengeti also touches on the protection of the wildlife.

Overall, the high density of animals naturally attracts many visitors and some have the feeling of driving through an open-air zoo.

Some of the jeeps obstruct the way of the animals or hinder cats of prey during the hunt. Tell your driver that you don't approve of such behaviour.

2nd place: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Hardly any other national park in Africa is as famous as the Serengeti. This is of course due to the diverse fauna and one of the largest animal migrations in the world .

On the other hand, the Serengeti is almost always threatened: Many people have an interest in the place and in the fertile savannah, on which millions of wild animals cavort and planned large-scale projects would probably mean the end of the national park. The battle for the Serengeti has been fought for decades and culminated in the documentary "Serengeti must not die" by Michael Grzimek and his father Bernhard in the 1950s.

Really one of the Top 10 Safari Parks in Africa.

The migration of wild animals, where millions of wildebeests, zebras and antelopes travel in a large circle through the Serengeti and the adjoining Masai Mara in Kenya during the course of the year. This is known also as one of the great wilderbeast migration , a topic you can do further reading on with another one of our articles .

The Serengeti is exposed to constant threats. The plans to build a highway through the area are not over yet. There are also frequent conflicts between wildlife and humans.

In addition, organizations are now warning that too many tourists are coming to the park. It is best to drive in the low season and avoid facilities that require a lot of water (swimming pools etc.).

1st Place: Masai Mara Nature reserve, Kenya

Number one on the top 10 safari parks in africa list! When tears shoot into the eyes of the viewers of a lion documentary because the pictures are so overwhelming, the reportage is mostly shot in the Masai Mara (or Maasai Mara).

Wide landscape with green hills as far as the eye can see. The view is interrupted only by Wildebeest , zebras, giraffes, Elephants ,, antelopes , lions , hyenas… The Masai Mara could pass for an African cliché if it were not real.

Word has got around of course that the Masai Mara is a paradise on earth. It is therefore frequently overcrowded and the many cars already have influence on the behavior of the wild animals. Some cars leave the tracks in search of the best view. If this happens to you, it's best to tell the driver that you don't want them to.

The park also serves as a Rhino sanctuary and is home to some 60 white and black rhinos, who are guarded around the clock by armed rangers. An absolute must for rhino fans, who are almost guaranteed to meet some of the animals here.

The impressive Murchison waterfall, where the Victoria Nile plunges over 43 metres into the depths, is also a must see. The park is home to the endangered Rothschild Giraffes (also Uganda giraffe or Nubian giraffe). To the south of the park is the Budongo chimpanzee forest.

The park is in some places tsetse fly high area. Be sure to take care to protect yourself against insects.

When to go on a Safari

The best time is always present, but if you are looking for the most enjoyment from your trip, the best time to go is from July through October, when the animals are easy to find and in substantial numbers. However, deciding when to go on a safari depends on  what  country you want to visit and when you can plan your trip. As well as the type of wildlife you hope to encounter.

The best months for an African safari are therefore varied.

  • Fleece or warm jacket.
  • A pair of  safari  trousers – those that zip off at the knees are very handy, too.
  • Comfortable walking shoes (or boots) and socks.

Above and beyond the comfortable basics, there are niche items which could enhance your experience on safari. We've researched the best of these items to take with you.

Best insect repellent for African safari: Natrapel 8  Hour insect repthatellent: this is a CDC recommended product based on 20% Picaridin formula and is  DEET  FREE. It is safe to spray on your skin and clothing.

Best binoculars for African safari : Celestron 71347 Outland x | 10×25 |  Best compact Binoculars  for Travel.

Best shoes for African safari :  light trail  shoes  and hybrid  shoe /sandals (Keen, Teva, Merrel, North Face, HiTec, Garmont, Salomon etc) are adequate for regular travel and normal  safari  conditions. Even fly-camping trips and walking trails on fairly rough terrain don't warrant hiking boots when conditions are dry.

It is important to find out what you need for specific areas as well as administrative documents and permits.

Safari experiences are generally safe, but it's important to follow guidelines and instructions provided by your guides or tour operators. Wildlife should be observed from a safe distance and never approached or provoked. It's also recommended to stay within designated areas and camps, especially during night hours. Adhering to these precautions ensures a safe and enjoyable safari experience.

Many safari operators and lodges prioritize sustainability and conservation efforts. They work to minimize the ecological impact by implementing responsible practices such as supporting local communities, conserving natural resources, and participating in wildlife conservation initiatives. When choosing a safari operator, it's advisable to opt for those with strong environmental ethics and credentials.

Safaris promote responsible wildlife viewing, which involves observing animals from a safe distance and respecting their natural behaviors. Touching or disturbing the wildlife can cause stress or potentially dangerous situations for both humans and animals.

Several ways to contribute to conservation efforts during a safari include supporting eco-friendly lodges or tour operators that actively participate in conservation initiatives. Additionally, you can choose to visit parks and reserves that allocate a portion of the entrance fees to conservation projects.
