30 Things Everyone Completely Missed In The Incredibles 2

The Incredibles 2 is filled with secrets, easter eggs, and things Disney fans missed. Here are all of it's hidden things.

It’s been 14 long years for Pixar fans since The Incredibles was first released. And a lot has happened in the world of animation too. Pixar wasn’t even owned by Disney back when the first Incredibles came out, that merger happened a year later. Incredibles 2 is proof that Pixar has continued to evolve for the better under the Disney banner. Say what you will about the mouse owning franchises like Marvel and Star Wars when it comes to Pixar films they’re spot on.

Incredibles 2 takes place right where the first left off, leaving many to wonder if Brad Bird could pull off the nearly impossible, having it look and feel just like the first while still being new. Not only did Bird pull it off, but he and the Pixar crew have exceeded everyone’s expectations. The one complaint some have voiced is that the storyline in Incredibles 2 was slightly weaker than that of the first movie. While this may be somewhat true, the weakness in the story gets a facelift from tons of deep character development. Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack get plenty of scenes where they’re not in combat, helping audiences to connect with the characters even more than before. Even Frozone (who was one of my favorites from the first movie) gets to show off more of his personality. Becoming more of the Parr’s friend than the token super who still hangs around to talk about the glory days.

Warning Spoilers Ahead!!!

If you haven’t seen Incredibles 2 yet, I highly suggest watching The Incredibles before you do. Not only will it enhance the overall movie-going experience but tune you into the characters with a modern-day perspective. It’ll also help you catch everything you missed in Incredibles 2 .

30 Jack-Jack’s 17 Powers

The name Jack-Jack Parr is a play on Helen and Bob's baby being a “jack of all trades,” when it comes to superhero powers. Jack-Jack is said to have shown 17 of those powers in Incredibles 2 .

Jack-Jack’s 17 powers include self-combustion, shapeshifting, demon form, mimicking features on others, phasing through solid objects, enhanced strength, levitation, dimensional traveling, balloon pliable, laser vision, creating duplicates, electrogenesis, molecular vibration, wall crawling, teleportation, size manipulation, and being able to harden into metal (from the first Incredibles movie).

If an Incredibles 3 was to ever get made, it’s likely we’d get to see even more of Jack-Jack’s superpowers.

29 The Secret A113

At the end of Incredibles 2 , Violet and Tony Rydinger are getting chaperoned by the family to go see a movie for their first date. The movie shown to be playing is Dementia A113.

The A113 is a running Pixar Easter egg which appears in every Pixar film (except Monsters Inc.).

It’s a nod to the name of a classroom at the California Institute of the Arts, where a bunch of Pixar artists and filmmakers studied.  Dementia 13 is a real movie which was released in 1963. It was also Francis Ford Coppola’s first film as a director.

28 Stealing From DreamWorks

Evelyn Deavor is not only a new character in Incredibles 2 , but she’s also the villain. For fans of animated films, it doesn’t take much to see the similarities between Evelyn and a DreamWorks character from the movie Megamind (2010).

Evelyn Deavor is almost identical looking to Roxanne Ritchie.

Roxanne is the hero in her story while Evelyn only pretends to be one of the good guys. DreamWorks was in partnership with Disney up until 2016 but now works out of the offices at Universal Studios.

27 Usher Cameo As Limo Driver

Usher makes an appearance in Incredibles 2 as the limo driver and errand boy for Winston Deavor (Bob Odenkirk). He also says, “I’m your biggest fan,” to Frozone which is a callback to The Incredibles when Buddy Pine says the same thing to Mr. Incredible.

Billy snapped because of how Bob responded to his petitions to be a sidekick, but Frozone played it super cool (pun intended) with Usher the limo driver. Although, it would be funny if Usher was to become the villain in Incredibles 3 because he felt Frozone played it too cool.

26 The Hidden Meaning Of The Hotel Painting

After completing her first mission, Helen is bubbling with joy as she recounts her adventures to Bob over the phone. Behind her is a painting on the wall featuring white and red geometric shapes. There are 4 on the left and one on the right.

The painting is symbolizing Helen (Elastigirl) being separated from her family and that they only succeed when they’re all together. Bob was captured in the first Incredibles movie after working alone, as was Elastigirl in Incredibles 2 .

25 Sarah Vowell To Do Awful Things To Herself

One of the cutest and memorable scenes in Incredibles 2 is when Bob takes the family to the diner where Tony Rydinger works as a server (his parents own the diner). The bit involves a spit-take, with Violet embarrassing herself thoroughly in front of Tony.

In an interview with Collider, Sarah Vowell (Violet) said she had to ostensibly waterboard herself to get the sound right for the spit-take.

Vowell was so invested in getting the sound just right, she even caused herself to throw up all over the studio.

24 Ghostbusters Shout-Out

Elastigirl mentions to Evelyn Deavor that something “feels off,” regarding her capture of the criminal mastermind Screen Slaver. Helen knows it went down too easy, which leads to Evelyn trying to make excuses (since she is Screen Slaver).

Evelyn tries to get Helen off her current path of thinking by mentioning “Einstein was a patent clerk,” when talking about the pizza delivery driver being Screen Slaver. This line is almost a direct quote from Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters when he’s trying to convince Ray they’ll be alright without funding from Columbia University.

23 Superhero Theme Songs

Winston Deavor is a true fanboy of supers, even memorizing their theme songs. Audiences get to hear Mr. Incredibles’ and Frozone’s theme in part, but not Elastigirl’s. Winston tries to sing it later but is cut off by Helen.

For those who stuck around for the credits, there’s a treat featuring the full versions of all three theme songs.

Elastigirl’s is like Spider-Man’s song, Frozone’s has a classic Marvin Gaye-style to it, and Mr. Incredibles’ is like a catchy jingle. The music for Incredibles 2 is scored by Michael Giacchino and should win plenty of accolades come the 2018 awards season.

22 Voyd’s Video Game Powers

Sophia Bush is the voice actor for Voyd, a new superhero character introduced in Incredibles 2 . She is a fangirl of Elastigirl and can divert objects around her by creating voids in space, allowing them to appear and disappear in different spots.

Voyd’s powers are very similar to the video game by Valve, called Portal.

In the game Portal , players are challenged with a first-person puzzle-platform involving moving objects through portals to complete an objective. Voyd uses her powers (much like one would in Portal ) during the battle on the DEVTECH ship to assist and save Elastigirl.

21 End Credit Teases Incredibles 3

In true Incredibles form, the film ends with a sequence of stunning art and musical scoring while the credits start to roll. Hidden within these visual and audio clips is a potential hint towards the return of the Underminer.

A drill breaks ground in one of the final clips, which could be Brad Bird’s way of suggesting we’ll get an Incredibles 3 in the future — with the Underminer causing havoc once again. Either the Underminer is horrible at saving and spending money (since he got away with the loot in Incredibles 2 ) or he’s simply bored.

20 Hidden Micky Mouse

Hypnosis has been around since the late 1700s and was often a real fear during the 50s and 60s. Disney capitalizes on this theme by making it Screen Savers weapon of choice but also throws in a hidden Easter egg too.

If you look real close while the trippy spirals are blowing your eye sockets out, it’s possible to make out a warped looking Micky Mouse.

Is Disney trying to hypnotize the American public by using Micky as their trigger? It would sure make for a cool story if they were.

19 Mission Impossible 6 Shout-Out

In a line very close to the one uttered by Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 6 , Elastigirl calls out, “ where is the closest window ,” before jumping out of it. Cruise, who likes to perform his own stunts, was initially injured during the window jumping scene with a broken ankle.

In typical Tom Cruise fashion, after his injury healed he reshot the take, this time without any problems. Elastigirl doesn’t suffer any injuries due to her powers, but the shout-out to MI6 and Tom Cruise was a neat little Easter egg.

18 Classical Music Kari

True fans of The Incredibles will remember Kari McKeen (Bret Parker), best friend of Violet who was assigned to babysit Jack-Jack while Dash and Violet stowed away on their mom’s jet. Helen finds the kids and calls Kari, making sure she can handle Jack-Jack.

Kari mentions she’ll play lots of Mozart for him and it’ll make him smart.

In Incredibles 2 , Jack-Jack is shown to have a love for Mozart after spending the night with Edna Mode (Brad Bird). Not only did Mozart potentially make Jack-Jack smarter, but the composer's music became assimilated with Jack-Jack’s powers.

17 Safari Court Is Safari Inn

For those who have visited Burbank, California, the motel the Parr’s get holed up in, might look familiar. The Safari Court, as it’s called in Incredibles 2 , is almost identical to a real and semi-famous hotel called the Safari Inn.

The Safari Inn has appeared in various films including True Romance and Apollo 13. The Inn has also been featured in television series’ like Six Feet Under , Desperate Housewives , CSI: Vegas , Monk , and Prison Break . It was even on the album cover of The Wallflowers . The inn was built in 1955 and has been home to plenty of aspiring talent in the entertainment industry for decades.

16 No Honey Again

Playing off the trope of “He (or she in this case) who must not be seen,” Honey’s (Kimberly Adair Clark) voice is in Incredibles 2 . Brad Bird even included a neat callback to The Incredibles where Lucius Best (Samuel L. Jackson) is asking his wife Honey “Where is my super suit.” This time, however, Frozone’s super suit is where it’s supposed to be.

Honey was initially supposed to have a character and be in the movie.

Bill Bird scrapped the idea, saying “she was funnier off screen,” and recycled her design for another superhero character. This could possibly be Voyd or one who didn't make the cut.

15 Disney Animator Tribute

Elastigirl rushes off to save Ambassador Henrietta Selick, but what audiences might not know is that her name is paying tribute to a Disney animator. Henrietta Selick is a nod to director Henry Selick, who like Brad Bird was a graduate of the California Institute of Arts.

Henry is known for his stop-motion work on James and the Giant Peach and The Nightmare Before Christmas , along with writing the screenplay for Coraline . Most recently, Selick is reported to be directing a Little Nightmares TV adaptation, which is being produced by the Russo Brothers.

14 Famous Chinese Takeout Box

The Parr’s have been released from jail after their fight with the Underminer and are sitting around the dinner table eating Chinese takeout. A keen eye will notice the Parr family is still in their clothes from the final scene of The Incredibles , as their house was destroyed. It should also pick up on the logo placed on the Chinese takeout boxes.

The famous Chinese takeout box and logo has appeared in numerous Pixar films like A Bugs Life, Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., and Ratatouille.

13 Pew Pew Jack-Jack

The saying “pew pew,” is commonly applied to the sound a laser blaster makes in sci-fi movies, most often associated with the Star Wars franchise. Laura Dern was even called out for saying it while playing Vice Admiral Holdo in The Last Jedi .

Much like Dern, Violet (Sarah Vowell) couldn’t hold back her excitement either, saying “pew, pew,” while firing Jack-Jack’s laser eyes to save Dash.

Whether the pew, pew was intentional or left in for fun, hasn’t been determined. As a Star Wars fan, I’m glad Brad Bird let it be in Incredibles 2.

12 New Math Callback

Introduced during the late 50s was a program dubbed New Math by the United States and even certain European countries in the 1960s. The idea was to boost math skills amongst grade school kids to combat areas of technology during the Cold War Era. The program was snubbed shortly after it began.

Dash’s math book not only says New Math on it, but Bob also can’t figure out how to do it because “why would anyone change the way you do math?”

The idea of new math is also a  dig towards the common core standards , which were introduced to American students in 2009.

11 Going Poltergeist

Jack-Jack is revealed to have the ability to enter other dimensions while still being heard, although, unseen. This is a unique callback to the movie Poltergeist when Carol Anne gets sucked into another dimension. The Poltergeist scene relates to Incredibles 2 through Craig T. Nelson, who plays Jack Jack’s father Bob and Carol Anne’s father, Steve Freeling.

If we wanted to get technical, both scenes are a callback to 1962 episode of The Twilight Zone , titled Little Girl Lost. This also fits with the theme of Incredibles 2 taking place in the 60s.

The Safari Inn from “True Romance”

Safari Inn (6 of 24)

One oft-filmed-at locale that I had known about for ages, but had never gotten around to stalking was the historic Safari Inn on West Olive Avenue in Burbank. I had driven by the motel countless times over the years – I get my hair done right across the street, in fact – and, even though I knew of the site’s prestigious filming pedigree, for some odd reason, I never thought to stalk it. Then, a couple of weeks ago, my hair stylist happened to be running late, so I decided to pop on over to the decades-old inn to finally do some proper stalking of the place.

The Safari Inn was originally constructed in 1955 and, amazingly enough, still looks almost exactly the same today as it did then.

Safari Inn (2 of 24)

The site is most famous for its iconic neon sign, which has stood as a beacon on Olive Avenue, beckoning passersby and road-trippers alike, since the day the motel was founded.

Safari Inn (15 of 24)

Today, the boutique hotel, which was just recently renovated, boasts 55 rooms and suites, most with their own kitchen or kitchenette, a fitness center, laundry facilities, free parking, and complimentary shuttle service to and from the Burbank Airport. Not bad for around $100 a night. And the traveler reviews on TripAdvisor all look to be pretty favorable, to boot.

Safari Inn (13 of 24)

The Safari Inn also features a large, second-story patio deck . . .

Safari Inn (10 of 24)

. . . which overlooks a pool.

Safari Inn (18 of 24)

I absolutely love the pool’s feather-shaped cut-out, which you can see in the bottom left of the photograph below and which matches the feather on the inn’s famous signage. So cute!

Safari Inn (23 of 24)

The Safari Inn’s most notable onscreen appearance was in 1993’s True Romance , where it masqueraded as the supposed Hollywood-area motel where Clarence Worley (Christian Slater) and Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette) stayed while visiting L.A. Some camera trickery and crafty editing was used to make the hotel appear as if it was located on Sunset Boulevard in the movie, though, and not in the heart of suburban Burbank.

ScreenShot7255

The interior of Clarence and Alabama’s room was just a set and not an actual Safari Inn room. You can see what one of the hotel’s real life rooms looks like here . Despite this fact, a girl in one of my former acting classes booked the “ True Romance room” for her True Romance -loving boyfriend’s birthday one year.

ScreenShot7257

Because Clarence and Alabama’s door is never actually shown in the movie, I was not able to figure out what room was used for the exterior shots.

ScreenShot7297

All I was able to ascertain was that it was a second floor room, located in the northwest corner of the property, in the vicinity of the area denoted with a pink arrow in the photograph below.

Safari Inn- True Romance room

True Romance is hardly the first production to utilize the Safari Inn, though. Thanks to the L.A. Bizarro website , I learned that way back in 1970 the property masqueraded as the Sunshine Motor Inn where Shirley Renfrew Partridge (Shirley Jones) and her family stopped to take a shower after being sprayed by a skunk in the Season 1 episode of The Partridge Family titled “But the Memory Lingers On.”

ScreenShot7293

In 1995’s Apollo 13 , the Safari Inn stood in for the supposed Florida-area motel where Marilyn Lovell (Kathleen Quinlan) stayed the night before her husband, Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), embarked on his mission to the moon.

ScreenShot7252

In 2000, the motel was featured on the The Wallflowers’ sampler CD for (Breach).

ScreenShot7247

In the Season 4 episode of Six Feet Under titled “Can I Come Up Now?”, which aired in 2004, the Safari Inn was where George Sibley (James Cromwell) and Ruth Fisher (Frances Conroy) visited George’s estranged son, Kyle, (James Waterston). In the episode, the exterior of the hotel is shown only very briefly.,

ScreenShot7290

Thanks to fellow stalker Dal, I learned that the Safari Inn served as the finishing point for The Law Enforcement Desert Relay in the Season 4 episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation titled “Dead Ringer,” which also aired in 2004.

safari inn incredibles 2

In the 2005 movie Coach Carter , the Safari Inn was where the Richmond High School basketball team stayed – and snuck out to go party – during the Bayhill Tournament Championship.

ScreenShot7272

The real life interior of two of the Safari’s room were also used in the filming.

ScreenShot7274

The Safari Inn also popped up in the Season 4 episode of Prison Break titled “The Price”, which aired in 2008, as the motel where Dr. Sara Tancredi (Sarah Wayne Callies) had a run in with Gretchen Morgan (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe – whom I did not even recognize in the role!).

ScreenShot7281

One of the hotel’s real life rooms also appeared in the episode.

ScreenShot7283

In 2009, the Safari Inn was where former child star Christine Rapp (Elizabeth Perkins) tried to hide out and wound up killing someone in the Season 8 episode of Monk titled “Mr. Monk’s Favorite Show.”

ScreenShot7276

In the Season 7 episode of Desperate Housewives titled “Pleasant Little Kingdom”, which aired in 2010, the Safari Inn was where Gabrielle Solis (Eva Longoria) said goodbye to her switched-at-birth daughter, Grace Sanchez (Cecilia Balagot).

ScreenShot7248

In 2012, the Safari Inn stood in for Sunset Boulevard’s Crystal Motel, where Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) discovered the body of Gwyneth Adler in the Season 7 episode of The Closer titled “Hostile Witness.” Only the interior of one of the Safari’s rooms appeared in the episode.

ScreenShot7262

According to IMDB , both the Season 3 episode of T.J. Hooker titled “Undercover Affair” and the Season 7 episode of Falcon Crest titled “Legacies” were filmed at the Safari Inn, but I could not find copies of either with which to verify that information.

Safari Inn (9 of 24)

And while IMDB also states that the Season 1 episode of Southland titled “Mozambique” was filmed at the Safari Inn, that information is incorrect. “Mozambique” was actually filmed at the Saharan Motor Hotel located at 7212 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood – a site I am going to have to stalk in the near future as it is where Patrick Swayze and his wife, Lisa Nieme, lived upon first moving to Los Angeles.

While not technically filmed there of course, the Safari Inn features in Incredibles 2, as the motel the Incredibles are living early in the film.

The CSI episode was called “Dead Ringer”. The Safari Inn was the finish line of the 120 mile Baker to Vegas marathon for the LVPD.

Thank you so much for this! Adding the info to the post now!

Hi. I found many episodes of T.J. Hooker 1982-1986 on dailymotion.com In many of the episodes it shows Sgt. Hooker lived @ The Safari Inn while he was separated / divorced from his wife. His hot blonde neighbor always popped in wearing a two piece bikini or negligee. When he is shown @ T.S.I his room is always filled with cardboard boxes which he still has not unpacked. Total bachelor pad.

Was this the same hotel from The Runaways?

Awesome! I could have sworn you did a post on this hotel before but I guess not. I must have seen it somewhere else. Not too many places like that are kept up. Its nice to see that this one will probably be around for awhile.

The lobby of the hotel also played as a florida nursing home in the Ron Howard movie Apollo 13

No way! I’m going to have to go back and look for it. 🙂

Love it! I actually had no idea how popular of a film spot this was – I drive by it a lot when I come to town. Thanks for this post. I’ll definitely have to stop by and check it out sometime!

Correction: True Romance came out in 1993, not 1995.

Thank you so much! I hate making mistakes like that!!!

Aww bummer that you weren’t able to figure out the CSI episode. I’ll keep it in mind and let you know if I ever come across it! Very cool location, I love the sign/pool shape similarity too!

Easter Eggs You Missed In Incredibles 2

Elastigirl in Incredibles 2

Pixar took their sweet time delivering  Incredibles 2 , but the advancements in animation tech over the last 14 years certainly haven't hurt this long-awaited follow-up. Just the opposite, actually: The animation in  Incredibles 2 is at times jaw-droppingly gorgeous, with style to spare and bracing action sequences that make you so tense that you forget that nothing on the screen is actually real.

In short, Incredibles 2 does not disappoint. Not the old fans (who, 14 years later, are now actually old) nor the new ones, who will be just as enthralled with this adventure as we all were the first time we met the Parr family, ages before superhero movies became the biggest game in Hollywood.

With  Incredibles 2  also clocking in as the longest Pixar movie to date at 118 minutes , you can't say you didn't get your money's worth. In that hefty runtime, Pixar has scattered a mind-boggling number of Easter eggs and little references to reward sharp eyes and repeat viewings. It's nearly impossible to catch them all while you're enjoying the movie for the first time. Whether you've seen the movie and are wondering what you missed or are going to the movie and want to be prepared, here's a roundup of all the Easter eggs we caught in Incredibles 2 .

Baby Mozart

Edna Mode and Jack-Jack Parr are the best team-up in  Incredibles 2 , unless you count Jack-Jack and the backyard raccoon fighting as a "team-up."

The diminutive inventor (voiced in hilariously over-the-top fashion by director Brad Bird) is at first resistant to spending time with a child, as you'd assume such a haughty diva would be. But she becomes completely won over when she sees the breadth of Jack-Jack's powers, and the duo end up spending hours together while the sleepy Mr. Incredible gets some rest.

When Bob returns to pick up Jack-Jack (as well as the super-suit she designed to manage Jack-Jack's powers), Edna fills Bob in on her rapidly-accelerating bond with the kid. In particular, she mentions that Jack-Jack is taking a liking to Mozart. It's not a random reference — when it comes to classical composers, this Easter egg reiterates that Jack-Jack has a well-established preference.

In the 2005 short film  Jack-Jack Attack,  Jack-Jack and his teenage babysitter spend time together at the Parr residence, with the babysitter setting up a wide array of neurologically stimulating activities for the youngest member of the Parr family — and the selection includes a Mozart CD . Turns out the music really does bring out something in Jack-Jack, inspiring him to make the babysitter really earn her pay by destroying his entire house. There's clearly something to Mozart's music that inspires the monster in the little man. The composer even gets a "special thanks" credit.

Smelling Ratz

One of Pixar's subtler long-running Easter eggs involves actor John Ratzenberger, whose voice appears in every single one of the studio's movies. He's got an even better record for appearances than the storied Pizza Planet truck.

Since his first appearance as Hamm the piggy bank in  Toy Story , Ratzenberger has hung on as a sort of good luck charm for Pixar. In  The Incredibles , he lent his voice to the villainous Underminer, who drilled up from underground at the end of the story to take the heroes on.

Since  Incredibles   2 picks up exactly where  The Incredibles left off, Ratzenberger is still in the mix, kicking off the movie with an opening bank robbery and battle. Interestingly, he lives to fight another day, which unexpectedly makes the Underminer  Incredibles 2 's one and only sequel hook.

The only thing the movie has in the way of a credits scene is a brief stylized glimpse of the Underminer's drill returning from beneath the ground at the very end of the reel. If they do end up making an  Incredibles 3 , they'll have to have the villain back just for the sake of ensuring that Ratzenberger has something to do. (Well, it's either that or  the semi-truck from  Cars .)

One of the most famous Pixar Easter eggs shows up a number of times throughout the course of  Incredibles 2 —  but if you don't know what you're looking for, it's one of the easiest to miss.

"A113" is a short sequence of letters and numbers that does not, on its own, mean anything. So why has it appeared in so many Pixar movies?

The sequence refers to one specific classroom at the  California Institute of the Arts in Valencia , where many influential animators and filmmakers attended college. It's not just a Pixar reference, either — it's also appeared in an eclectic bundle of movies and TV shows , from  Family Guy to  The Hunger Games .

Since the Easter egg is so inconspicuous, it pops up in a lot of places throughout Incredibles 2 . It appears on the side of the runaway Metrolev train that Elastigirl has to stop, shows up on a license plate during the opening parking lot fight, and also appears inside of Evelyn Deavor's laboratory.

Finally, just in case you hadn't managed to catch the others, the filmmakers stuck a big fat obvious one on the theater marquee at the end of the movie, with the title of the theater's only film reading  Dementia 113 .

It's fitting that the sequence would show up a number of times In  Incredibles 2 , considering that director Brad Bird is the one who started the tradition in a 1987 episode of the show Amazing Stories .

♪ Here comes Elastigirl! ♪

One of the most fun aspects of The Incredibles movies is the energetic score by Michael Giacchino. It's a throwback full of brass instruments recorded on analog tapes, and never fails to get one's blood pumping, regardless of how cheeky and cheesy it is.

Of course, the only thing cheesier than a good theme song is a theme song with vocals, and Incredibles 2 has a bunch of them — they're just Easter eggs buried in the credits.

Anyone who waits for Incredibles 2  to finish will be treated to three different theme songs for the heroes, and it seems like they're meant to be real things in the movie's universe. When Evelyn makes her true plans known to Elastigirl, she lightly taunts the heroine by saying that her brother Winston knows all the words to her theme song.

In the middle of the movie, it's hard to tell if Evelyn is joking or not — but during the credits, you actually get to hear the song . It's no wonder Winston memorized the track — it's simple and it's catchy, with a chorus of wailing vocals that evokes classic superhero songs like Spider-Man 's.

Elastigirl's theme is followed in the credits by a sultry, Marvin Gaye-style  Frozone theme song , and a rousing Mr. Incredible track as well. They're great little tunes, and fit perfectly within the Incredibles ' idealistic universe. Slap those catchy jingles in a commercial, and you're gonna move some toys.

Safari Court

After an exploding jet falls on their modest suburban home during the action-packed climax of The Incredibles , the Parr family ends up with their backs against the wall, temporarily displaced. Incredibles 2 picks up with the characters living in a very vintage-looking motel called Safari Court. The distinctive building, colored with yellow and pink hues, is recognizable for a reason: It's based on a real place.

When you look at the two side by side, the Parrs' temporary residence is clearly modeled after the Safari Inn, a semi-famous hotel in Burbank, CA located only a few streets away from Walt Disney Studios. Clearly, the photogenic location made an impression on the filmmakers — and they wouldn't be the only ones. The inn has played host to scenes in popular movies such as  True Romance and  Apollo 13 , as well as a number of locally produced television shows. Its ubiquity in pop culture makes it the landmark equivalent of a familiar face, and its resemblance is beautifully realized as an Easter egg in  Incredibles 2 .

Dash's second place

A big part of the original  Incredibles plot had to do with the supers going incognito after vigilante crimefighting is outlawed. As a result, the Parrs are forced to limit their shows of strength, pretending they're normal people, even when it drives them crazy to constantly throttle their talents.

The end of the first movie sees Dash using his powers in a foot race at a track meet, with the Parr family finally having reached a compromise regarding vulgar displays of power. Instead of winning, Dash's parents encourage him to come in second — an impressive showing for a "normal" kid, and a moral victory for a superhero.

In the second movie, after the opening battle with the Underminer, Dash can be seen sitting at the dinner table with a t-shirt that says "2" on it for second place, which he was awarded just before the track meet became a fight scene. It's an Easter egg, like the Underminer's voice actor, that comes into play in both movies. Dash wore the shirt during the original movie's race, providing a handy visual metaphor for that movie. When he keeps it on through to the dinner scene in  Incredibles 2 , it helps to establish continuity of both story and theme.

The Ambassador

One of Incredibles 2 's most thrilling set pieces involves Elastigirl trying to keep a high-profile ambassador with the United League of Nations safe from the clutches of the Screen Slaver. The ambassador, voiced by Isabella Rossellini, is a slightly geeky fan of Elastigirl. As it turns out, her name is a slightly geeky reference in itself.

While the character is only listed in the credits as being the "Ambassador," there is a quick reference to the character's name being Henrietta Selick — an Easter egg tribute to animator Henry Selick, a student of the California Institute of the Arts much like director Brad Bird, who's had his hands in a number of Disney productions over the years. He's most known for his work with stop-motion animation, directing the movies  The Nightmare Before Christmas , James and the Giant Peach , and  Coraline , which he also wrote the screenplay for.

There's not much else about the Ambassador character that ties back into Selick's career — he's an animator from New Jersey, not a politician from another nation. The reference appears to just be a wink and a nod to a fellow creative, and to the audience that enjoys his unique work.

Increasingly suspicious leftovers

Lots of different Chinese restaurants in the real world use generic designs for their takeout packaging, so why wouldn't that trend stay true in Pixar movies?

One of the Easter eggs that keeps popping up in Pixar productions is a distinctive Chinese takeout container , featuring a red pagoda surrounded on all corners by Chinese lettering. It's the sort of box that would look familiar to anyone who's ever eaten Chinese takeout — or watched a movie, where Chinese takeout is often shown alongside down-on-their-luck characters, serving as a metaphor for being up against the ropes in life.

The visual asset first appeared in the movie  A Bug's Life , and has since gone on to show up in  Toy Story 2, Ratatouille, Inside Out, and now,  Incredibles 2 .

Many of the distinctive boxes appear in the movie during the first dinner scene, after Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl have been thoroughly chewed out by detectives following their fight with the Underminer. You can also later spy the box holding leftovers in the fridge.

Evelyn's Deavor's evil endeavors

Incredibles 2 keeps up the Disney/Pixar track record of having a character who appears to be an ally of the main characters turn out to actually be the ultimate villain. It's a story trope that's turned up so often that you can expect it — an easy way to engineer a third-act twist with some built-in impact.

To  Incredibles 2 's credit, it doesn't try particularly hard to hide the fact that the brilliant engineer Evelyn Deavor is the true villain behind the Screen Slayer's mind-controlling crime spree. She's framed in creepy ways and knows things only a villain would know, making it easy for the perceptive viewer to call this shot well before it occurs.

One of the most telling hints as to her true nature? That would be her very name: Evelyn Deavor. Instead of reading her name as "ev-uh-lynn", pronounce her name as " eve -uhl." Say it all at once, and it sounds like "evil endeavor," which pretty much says it all, right? It's enough evidence to let an engaged viewer see the plot turn coming from miles away. The real twist, by comparison, is that Evelyn's brother Winston actually does turn out to be a pretty solid guy.

Happily ever after

As the action-packed plot of  Incredibles 2  concludes, the story pivots toward wrapping up some character arcs, reuniting the lovelorn Violet Parr with her crush Tony Rydinger.

By the time they meet again at the end of the movie, Tony has had his brain wiped by the only-kind-of-helpful Rick Dicker, losing all of his memories of Violet, including the fact that she's a costumed superhero.

After the Parr family has managed to defeat the Screenslaver, a.k.a. Evelyn Deavor, Violet reunites with Tony in the stairwell of their school, reintroducing herself to him with the hopes of a fresh start. While adolescent life isn't very kind to Violet throughout the movie, this scene is like a nice, warm hug to wrap things up. Everything worked out! Those crazy kids will be all right!

How do we know for sure? Well, the movie goes out of its way to let you know the two will get their happily ever after by literally staging their reunion next to a poster for the school's "Happily Ever After" dance. Coincidence? Sure, in their world it is. But in a movie, the on-the-nose poster is just another way of signaling to the audience that everything's going to be okay. So what if Violet's dad accidentally destroyed part of Tony's brain? He's a kid — he'll get it back.

New math for life

Bob's difficulty in helping Dash out with his math homework is one of the funniest gags in  Incredibles 2 , and hits the hardest for parents around Bob's age. In case you haven't been around an intermediate school math class for awhile, you may be surprised to learn that they really did change math — whoever "they" are. It wasn't just Bob being clueless — this is a very real thing.

The "New Math for Life" book full of indecipherable new ways of solving math —  why would they change math —  is a reference to the often-confusing Common Core method of learning and doing arithmetic.

It's often debated just how drastic "new" ways of learning math are compared to the so-called "old" ways. We can't pretend to understand what's going on here — we, like Bob, learned math the old way, and don't have the patience or the willpower to learn this stuff again. But it's the sort of thing that goes viral often, igniting debates between parents in which no one really knows what they're talking about and everyone is frustrated. If you hear some parents cackling particularly loudly at the homework sequence in the theater, the Common Core callout is probably what got to them.

Future proof

Put a pin in this one, because the word is there's an Easter egg in Incredibles 2 that's designed not to be identifiable at the time of the movie's release.

Apparently, tucked away somewhere in Incredibles 2 's two-hour runtime is a flash-forward reference to the upcoming Toy Story 4 — one that audiences won't be able to identify until that movie sees release in 2019. If true, it wouldn't be the first time Pixar planted a reference to a future project in one of their movies. After all, a lot of these movies are in production at the same time, allowing animators on different projects plenty of time to see what's coming, and tip their hats pre-emptively.

It's a phenomenon that preceded the release of Incredibles 2 , with a poster for the superhero sequel  making an appearance  in Pixar's previous movie  Coco . But what could the Easter egg in Incredibles 2  be? For now, only the animators at Pixar seem to know, though it we had to make any guesses, we'd say a few of those background superheroes — especially the guy with the crochet costume and a big hand-stitched "C" on his chest — would be pretty primo toy material. Only time will tell.

Screen Rant

Incredibles 2: 11 easter eggs you missed.

Incredibles 2 is Pixar's longest film, and that means there's a lot more room for Easter Eggs. Here are the best hidden secrets in the sequel.

WARNING: Spoilers for Incredibles 2.

The long-awaited  Incredibles 2  has arrived with more humor, action and a load of hidden Easter Eggs. The film is a bonafide hit, with  Pixar's biggest opening weekend  ever and some top-level reviews. It's proven so popular, in fact, that fans are already bracing for the inevitably long wait for a possible  Incredibles 3 .

Of course, Pixar doesn't just produce some of the best-animated movies; they love to place little references to pop culture and their other films. Some of these - like the Pizza Planet truck - are legendary, but it goes deeper than just a few running gags. And, considering that  Incredibles 2 's runtime was longer than any of their previous films, that means there are more moments for fans to find and to miss.

Related:  What To Expect From Incredibles 3

Here are the best and most fun Easter Eggs hidden in  Incredibles 2 , from clever references relating to other Pixar characters  to sly commentary on what's happening in our own world.

John Ratzenberger Is Back As The Underminer

Pixar can't make a movie without including " good luck charm " John Ratzenberger. Best known for playing Cliff Calvin in Cheers, Ratzenberger has become a Pixar mainstay since playing Hamm in Toy Story ; his recognizable voice can be heard in every single one of their movies. Given that  The Incredibles ended on his character - The Underminer - threatening the surface world, it's only natural that  Incredibles 2 - which picks up several minutes after the first movie's cliffhanger - would have him reprise the role.

Although The Underminer escaped in his drill machine after the opening sequence of  Incredibles 2 , the film's end-credits  tease that he may still be out there, teasing a possible third appearance in an Incredibles 3 .

Jack-Jack Loves Mozart

When Bob picks up Jack-Jack from Edna Mode, she mentions that Jack-Jack really enjoys Mozart. This isn't just a throw-away line: it's actually a callback to  The Incredibles and its 2005 short film spinoff  Jack-Jack Attack , detailing his time with babysitter Kari. In the film itself, Kari says she'll play Mozart to the sleeping baby to boost his intelligence and creativity, which provides a classical score to the short as Jack-Jack's powers emerge.

Related: Why Incredibles 2 Is Pixar's Most Disappointing Sequel

Some fans have speculated that Kari's theory was right, and that it was actually Mozart's music that triggered Jack-Jack's powers (which, as of  Incredibles 2 , total 17).

A113 Appears Again

John Ratzenberger isn't the only connection in all the Pixar films. The famous sequence "A113" - a referene to the Cal-Arts classroom where many Pixar founders studied - is hidden in every single movie (and has appeared in lots of other movie and TV shows). In  Incredibles 2 , A113 appears when Violet and Tony go on their first date; it's hidden on the movie theater's marquee as a movie titled Dementia A113 .

Not only was the movie Dementia A113  a way to work in the digits, it's also a reference to the 1963 movie  Dementia 13 directed by   Oscar winner   Francis Ford Coppola.

The Outer Limits and Johnny Quest Place Incredibles 2 In The 1960s

The Incredibles and its sequel are actually set in the 1960s, evidenced by the technology and hidden dates throughout the movies. This can be best seen, though, in the media the characters consume.  Dementia 13 is an obvious one, but there's also some period TV shows.

When the Parrs aren't busy fighting evil, they're trying to live like any other ordinary family. One of the ways they like to unwind is by spending time together watching TV shows like Johnny Quest and The Outer Limits .  Johnny Quest was a cartoon   about a boy who travels with his father to exotic locations and fights bad guys, reflecting the lives of the Parrs. The Outer Limits was a sci-fi anthology series known for its creepy   opening titles about taking over people's TV screens; something that foreshadows the introduction of villain The Screen Slaver , who can hypnotize anyone when they watched a TV screen.

Related: Incredibles 2 Rejects Popular Theory About The First Film

A ghostbusters reference.

When Evelyn Deavor - the movie's real villian - tries to convince Elastigirl that the pizza delivery guy she's had posing as The Screen Slaver is a threat, she claims, "Einstein was a patent clerk!" This idea of unsuspecting power is itself a clue given to Evelyn's true intentions, but it also serves as a nod to Ghostbusters ; the quote is almost an exact copy of what   Peter Venkman said to motivate Ray Stanz, "Einstein did his best stuff when he was working as a patent clerk. "

6. A Reference to Poltergeist

Jack-Jack displays an array of new superpowers in Incredibles 2 , but at least one will be familiar to fansof another Craig T. Nelson movie,  Poltergeist . After Jack-Jack disappeared into the other dimension, he left behind a TV remote and his disembodied voice is heard throughout the house. This is a subtle nod to the scene in Poltergeist when the daughter was stuck in another dimension, and the family could only communicate with her through the static on their television screen.

Pizza Planet Truck

One recurring Pixar Easter Egg that was conspicuous by its absence in  The Incredibles is the Pizza Planet truck; Brad Bird was new to Pixar at the time and so didn't make the effort to sneak in the vehicle.

That oversight isn't repeated in  Incredibles 2 . The Pizza Planet truck - with a period-accurate redesign - can be seen while Helen was parachuting in her pursuit of The Screen Slaver; after she lands on the ground, the truck is right beside her.

The Safari Inn

The Parr's family home was destroyed at the end of  The Incredibles . When  Incredibles 2 picks up, the family is now residing in a hotel called the Safari Court. If this swanky hotel looks familiar, it's because it's based on a real hotel.

The Safari Inn is a hotel located in Burbank, California, close to Walt Disney Studios. The retro hotel is a famous filming location that can be seen in different movies such as True Romance, Coach Carter and Apollo 13.

Related:  Incredibles 2 Completely Ignores Modern Superhero Films

The batman references.

If you think the sixties and superheroes, you inevitably think of Adam West's Batman. Fittingly,  Incredibles 2 fits in a couple of nods to the caped crusader. First, West's Batmobile sound effect can be heard when the Incredibile goes into the water. Secondly, when DevTech is first revealed on screen, a faint Bat Signal is hidden in the clouds.

Related:  Bob Odenkirk's Incredibles 2 Character Was Going To Be The Villain

It's not all complimentary, though; Elastigirl made a comment about her new costume looking " dark and angsty ", which could be taken as a little jab at some of the recent DC movies, similar to Deadpool 2 's stab at the DCEU .

The Toy Story 4 Tease

It's Pixar tradition for any new release to tease what's next:  The Incredibles featured an eye-less version of  Cars ' Doc Hudson, while  Coco had a Mexican style poster in  Incredibles 2 . Things are a bit trickier for  Incredibles 2 as it was originally set to release in 2019, only for it to swap dates with  Toy Story 4 . This actually meant one meta Easter Egg was lost; originally the film would come fifteen years after the original, honoring Syndrome's " fifteen years too late " line.

Still, there is a reference to Toy Story 4 ... somewhere. At the time of writing, this hasn't been found, but we'll be sure to update the article when it is!

Honestly, this room was a lot better than expected. I was actually expecting a motel quality, but it does feel like a hotel inside the room. I'm referring to the style/decor/etc. You can even pre-order food via a card (aka no need to call and order) and have it delivered to your room at specified time. I did not take advantage of that, but it sounded cool. I did, however, take advantage of their shuttles. That is the main reason why I chose this hotel over other ones for our trip to SoCal this time. If you're going to Universal Studios/flying to Burbank Airport, then I'll definitely recommend this hotel. The shuttles are actually kinda small. It can only fit 9 or 10 people, so definitely plan and arrange ahead if possible. They share the shuttle with their sister hotel, which is right next door. The shuttle leaves right on time, which I was very thankful for. Gotta make sure I arrive on time/early for Nintendo World's early entrance (the line was still ridiculously long as of Sept 2023). We also used their shuttle to go to downtown Burbank + the airport. The pool area is very cute - I'd hang out there if I didn't have a huge list of food places I gotta eat while in SoCal. Apparently the Incredibles 2 used the "Safari Inn" sign in the movie, which I thought was a cool fun fact - shared by our driver, btw. Oh, and the front desk employees are all very professional.

The hotel was basic. However, staff were friendly and helpful, and the shuttle service to University Studio was free. CVS is around the corner, restaurants in waking distance, and seems like a safe area. Overall this hotel is a good bang for your buck.

Good service, good price and clean rooms. Close to universal studios. Rooms were very clean, no carpets and pretty modern looking. We would stay here again.

If you want a comfortable, quiet and reasonably priced motel, this ain't it! Also, if you have any allergies to pet dander, you will be miserable here. One notch above flea bag.

I stayed at the Safari Inn for one night. Service at the front desk was very welcoming. I really appreciate the free shuttle service to and from the airport as well. The room was decent. The bed, big and comfy. The kitchenette came in handy to warm up my food. I do wish that check-in was earlier. They allow check-ins starting at 4pm. And they could have done a better job vacuuming the carpet. Despite this, my overall stay went well. I slept great and I would consider staying here again.

Older style motor inn but don't let the look's scare you the rooms are very spacious and clean bed was comfortable and towels were soft. Staff were friendly a very helpful. Coffee maker, microwave, mini frig--everything you need

Just stayed 1 night here. Drove down from NorCal and needed 1 night at a place where we could bring our 25lb dog. This review is on room 126. Overall the room was nice (2 double beds). Sink area was nice, sorry don't recall the product brand they had in the room. Small fridge enough to put a few drinks in. Spacious enough for 2 people to move around without bumping into each other. Enough plugs around the room to charge your devices. Pet fee is $25/night, plus a $300 security deposit. They'll check the room after you leave to make sure it's all good and then will refund your deposit. Water pressure on the shower is very light. I have extremely thick long hair, so it too a while for it to get fully wet for me to shampoo and then took a while to rinse out. You can hear the street noise just a bit. Didn't bother me too much as we were extremely tired, but you could put in ear plugs and be just fine. Overall, nice place to stay for the price we got.

We stayed wed 6/15. Room was clean and nice. Beds were a little hard but we made it work. Next time we go to universal studios we would stay here again. Simon at the desk was real nice and helpful.

Photo of Kay E.

Unsafe & Infestation! I left the same night of my check in - I felt unsafe, strangers tried repeatedly to open my room door & bugs were coming out of the baseboards next to the bed (see photos). Wish I'd read other reviews about this - it is a roadside motel, anyone can drive in & be at your room door in seconds.

Loved this hotel it was clean and nice had everything we needed even a mini fridge and they had ice on sight they also had a clean pool. Nearby universal so it was fast and easy to get their! The best part was unlimited complimentary shuttles to anywhere in Burbank so we definitely took advantage and took a few free shuttles around the area definitely recommend booking here the staff was so NICE and made us feel comfortable Amazing:) !

‘Incredibles 2’ review: Superhero family returns in an incredibly terrific sequel

14 years after 2004’s hit “The Incredibles,” the superhero family is back in a delightful sequel in which Helen is recruited as part of an effort to restore the reputation of superheroes, while a (mostly) supportive Bob stays home with the kids. Rating: 4 stars out of 4.

Share story

Movie review.

OK, I’m going to call it right now: Quite possibly, this year’s best cinematic action sequence involves an animated superhero baby and a very surprised raccoon. Midway through Pixar’s delightful “Incredibles 2,” wee Jack-Jack, who is just discovering his superpowers, picks a fight with a critter on the patio. It’s a classic, zinging cartoon tussle, punctuated with powdery baby laughter and some unexpected transformations. The winner? Don’t bet on the raccoon.

The Parr family — mom Helen/Elastigirl (voiced by Holly Hunter), dad Bob/Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson), and kids Violet (Sarah Vowell), Dash (Huck Milner) and Jack-Jack — is back, 14 years after 2004’s hit “ The Incredibles ,” and the new film is more of the same, which is to say that it’s terrific. This time around, Helen is recruited as part of a corporate effort to restore the reputation of superheroes, while a (mostly) supportive Bob stays home with the kids, dealing with math homework, teenage sulks, and the baby’s fledgling superpowers. If you’ve ever found it difficult to take care of a toddler, lend some sympathy to the Parr family: This tot can burst into flames, clone himself at will, walk through walls and catapult himself into other dimensions, all while still requiring regular diaper changes.

Written and directed by Brad Bird, who also voices superhero fashion designer Edna Mode, “Incredibles 2” is set in a vaguely retro universe (think “The Jetsons” meets “Mad Men” meets, well, “The Incredibles”), filled with the sort of detail that reminds us why we love Pixar. Jack-Jack’s bedtime story is a faux Dr. Seuss book that’s even Seuss-ier than its inspiration; Bob’s belongings include a jar that holds, according to its label, “bullets that bounced off my chest”; and an assortment of new superheroes met by the family includes an aging, froglike fellow named Reflux, whose special power is that he can vomit fire. (Ouch.)

But while it’s great fun to watch the Incredibles/Parrs zipping around saving the world (with help from their preternaturally cool pal Lucius/Frozone, voiced with gusto by Samuel L. Jackson), “Incredibles 2” gets its heart by being a sweet family story. Though Violet’s in the midst of teenage growing pains (“Is she having adolescence?” Dash asks, after an outburst), and neither of the older kids appreciate being the one stuck with taking care of the baby — he’s passed around like a hot potato — the Parrs all have each other’s supersuit-clad backs. Fighting crime as a family is what they do, because it’s the right thing to do. Here’s hoping they’re back again soon; I can’t wait to meet Jack-Jack’s unlucky preschool teacher.

Screening in theaters before “Incredibles 2” is another Pixar treat: the enchanting short film “Bao,” directed by Domee Shi, about a Chinese-Canadian immigrant family and a very unusual dumpling. Don’t be surprised to find yourself weeping into your popcorn; this film, like “Up” and so many others, tells a story all of us will recognize — in the language of the heart.

★★★★ “ Incredibles 2 ,” with the voices of Holly Hunter, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Vowell, Huck Milner, Samuel L. Jackson, Brad Bird, Bob Odenkirk, Catherine Keener. Written and directed by Brad Bird. 118 minutes. Rated PG for action sequences and some brief mild language. Multiple theaters.

The Incredibles 2 review: a solidly fun superhero sequel

The Parr family returns in Pixar's latest outing, Incredibles 2. Here's our review of a solidly fun sequel...

Fourteen years is a long time by any yardstick, but in the fast-moving world of cinema, it’s an aeon. The superhero zeitgeist catalysed by Marvel’s Iron Man still hadn’t happened when Pixar made The Incredibles in 2004. Its work-a-day-family take on Fantastic Four felt fresh and funny back then, as it still does now; but can a sequel capture the same freshness after more than a decade of Marvel and DC movies have mined the genre?

Returning director Brad Bird certainly tries his damnedest. When its action sequences let fly, Incredibles 2 shows glimmers of its old magic: the animation is vibrant and elastic, the (virtual) camera angles inventive, the advances in CGI meaning buildings crash down and magnetic trains veer out of control more vividly than ever. It’s when Bird’s sequel settles back to earth that the movie begins to feel a little more rote.

Picking up immediately after the original movie, Incredibles 2 reintroduces the superhero family in the midst of a pitched battle with bank-robbing supervillain, the Underminer. Still bulging around the shoulders (and slightly less around the midriff) there’s the well-meaning yet clumsy father, Mr Incredible (voiced by Craig T Nelson), athletic, astute mother Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), teenage daughter Violet (Sarah Vowell) and younger son, Dash (Huck Milner). Then there’s baby Jack-Jack, a gaseous bundle of joy (and mischief) who’s now just coming into his own as a superhero.

When the Parr’s daring bid to save the city from disaster goes awry, however, their whole super-powered group is once again vilified by a concerned US government. Briefly slumming it in a motel, the Parrs are forced to consider taking on – the horror – ordinary full-time work again, at least until a smooth-talking industrialist, Winston Deavor (Bob Odenkirk, on a full Better Call Saul charm offensive) comes up with a plan: launch a pro-superhero PR campaign, with Elastigirl as its public face.

Ad – content continues below

Elastigirl, more calculating and less likely to cause damage to government property, quickly becomes a celebrity, while Mr Incredible winds up with the job of stay-at-home parent. All of this might be enough for one movie, but then a mysterious villain – nicknamed the ScreenSlaver – begins a hypnotic terror campaign across the city.

Since its founding in the 1980s, Pixar has repeatedly blazed a trail in terms of computer animation and storytelling, and The Incredibles broke new ground with its action set-pieces and detailed human characters. With Incredibles 2, however, we’re firmly in sequel territory: it’s more of the same, despite some decent comedy moments and Brad Bird’s typically assured action set-pieces.

The world-building in Incredibles 2 is, as ever, charming: the 60s spy movie feel is underlined by the retro-future styling and the hypnosis subplot, which harks back to a bygone decade’s fear of subliminal messages and mind control. One scene even appears to pay homage to The Ipcress File. Once again, though, the bitter warnings uttered by the villain – stuff about the masses sitting on the couch passively while superheroes do all the hard work – are soon dropped in favour of another action scene.

Come to think of it, one of the most fascinating notions floated in Incredibles 2 isn’t pursued, either. One reason why Elastigirl is chosen over Mr Incredible is because she’s less of an insurance liability than her spouse; we can imagine a quite wonderful string of scenes where one tries to go about their superhero business while retaining their no-claims bonus.

None of this is to say that Incredibles 2 isn’t a fun, solidly entertaining way to spend a couple of hours; there’s just little of the sense that the movie’s pushing Pixar’s creative abilities to the limits like the first movie did. It’s pleasing to see Elastigirl step out of her husband’s shadow and get some high-wire missions of her own; it’s a little disappointing to see side characters like Samuel L Jackson’s Frozone and friendly government agent Rick Dicker (Jonathan Banks) float in and out of the story without getting to add much.

As a summer superhero blockbuster, then, Incredibles 2 gets the job done, even if it never quite soars to the heights of its predecessor.

Incredibles 2 is out in UK cinemas on the 13th July.

Review:: ‘Incredibles 2’ is the superhero family saga we need right now

The Incredibles are back, and all is right with the world.

Well, maybe not all. Superheros are still illegal, just as they’ve been for a decade and a half, and evildoers like the Underminer (“I am always beneath you but nothing is beneath me!”) are still eager to empty the bank vaults of Municiberg and manufacture havoc wherever they go.

But for moviegoers who cherish the Oscar winning 2004 original that introduced Bob and Helen Parr, a.k.a. Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl, the good news is that writer-director Brad Bird has taken his own advice about not fearing to use your gifts to benefit the world and returned to animation with the sparkling “Incredibles 2.”

Bird’s animation resume includes two other exceptional films, “The Iron Giant” and “Ratatouille,” but his last two feature credits were for live action, directing Tom Cruise in “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” and George Clooney in “Tomorrowland.”

With “Incredibles 2,” Bird has returned to what he is brilliant at, and if animation fans are tempted to slaughter a fatted calf in celebration of this prodigal son’s return, it’s to be expected.

It’s not only the Parrs (voiced one more time by Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter) who reappear, so do their three kids, 14-year-old Violet (Sarah Vowell), 10-year-old Dash (Huck Milner) and superbaby Jack-Jack, not to mention close family friend Lucius Best/Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson).

Also returning is the first film’s zesty mixture of whip-smart, knowing dialogue, hairsbreadth escapes and realistic family dynamics made more involving by being filtered through parents and children gifted and burdened with super powers.

safari inn incredibles 2

Though it would be unrealistic to expect “Incredibles 2” to have quite the genre-busting surprise of the original, it is as good as it can be without that shock of the new — delivering comedy, adventure and all too human moments with a generous hand.

The initial shock the Parrs have to face in this sequel is that the witness protection-type program that has helped them survive the superhero ban is being phased out. That means even their bare-bones existence living at the Safari Court Motel eating take-out Chinese food is going to be at risk.

Enter, not a moment too soon, the siblings Deavor, brother and sister telecommunications billionaires Winston (Bob Odenkirk) and Evelyn (Catherine Keener).

Big fans of Supers (that’s what everyone calls them), Winston and Evelyn are determined to make superhero activity legal again by placing tiny cameras in super-suits and using the resulting footage to change public perception.

Mr. Incredible is all too willing to humbly offer his services, but Winston cuts him short. For a variety of reasons, including the fact that his heroic deeds tend to come with a lot of messy collateral damage, the billionaire and his sister feel “Elastigirl is our best play, she is the perfect launch.”

After 14 long years, ‘Incredibles 2’ picks up with its family of suburban superheroes »

Helen is nothing if not confident in her talents, and to emphasize the point “Incredibles 2” reprises a clip from the first film where she proclaims “leave the saving of the world to men? I don’t think so.”

After moving the family into one of their spare luxury residences, the Deavors want Helen to exercise her heroism in the big city of New Urbem, not Municiberg. She worries that the square-jawed husband she leaves behind is ill-suited to the manifold demands of parenthood.

But the family needs the money, and Helen accedes to Bob’s insistence that he will be OK. Soon she’s wheeling around on her zippy new Elasticycle and battling the nefarious Screenslaver, a villain who quite sensibly believes people spend too much time staring at screens.

Back on the home front, Bob has battles of his own, trying to assist Violet with a teenage romantic crisis and helping Dash with his New Math homework. “How,” he groans like many a parent before him, “could they change math?”

Most daunting of all, however, he has to deal with infant Jack-Jack, whose superpowers (hinted at in the first film) come into full flower here.

And that is definitely powers, in the plural — Jack-Jack has a ton (the press material helpfully lists 11 of them, including splitting into multiple Jack-Jacks) and neither the tot nor his dad have any idea how to control them.

That dilemma, and Bob’s plaintive need for “a little bit of ‘me’ time,” leads to an amusing interlude — a callback for one of the first film’s most memorable folks, diminutive and iron-willed fashionista Edna Mode, voiced once again by the director himself.

Bird’s imagination is too active to be content with bringing characters back, and “Incredibles 2” also introduces a selection of second-tier superheroes like Voyd (Sophia Bush), who creates voids, Krushauer (Phil LaMarr), who crushes things, and the unnerving Reflux (Paul Eiding), who announces “medical condition or super power, you decide.”

“Incredibles 2” takes advantage of the advances in computer animation since the first film came out, and the family’s adventures look snappier and super-exciting, but it is the echoes of the original (including a dynamic new score by the returning Michael Giacchino) that hook us.

The Parrs may not quite understand why Helen “has to save the family by leaving it, and fix the law by breaking it,” but pulling together turns out to be what they do best.

Travel Guide

Moscow's opulence and high culture is a sight to be seen. Forget what you learned about Russia in grade school. This lavish capital of a formerly communist nation has fully embraced the luxuries, excesses and decadence of Western capitalism. Like many former Soviet countries, Mother Russia struggles to successfully confront issues of widespread poverty, alcoholism, failing healthcare, and environmental protection. But Moscow has burgeoned into one of the most expensive, exclusive and largest travel destinations in the world. It comes complete with world-class museums, magnificent palaces, $1,000-a-night hotels, "face-control" nightclubs and internationally-renowned restaurants. Don't think you can afford Moscow? Don't be afraid. You can still find affordable deals if you are vigilant. This metropolis has a big and bold character and grandiose setting that's definitely worth getting to know.
