The Icebreaker Sampo Cruise in Kemi, Finland provides an experience that few can say they’ve achieved – jumping into the frigid waters near the Arctic Circle! Now if you want to count yourself as one of those who’s done it, or simply want bragging rights in front of your friends, look no further than this ultimate guide.

1 What is the Icebreaker Sampo and why is it so special?

The Icebreaker Sampo is a former icebreaker for the Finnish government that was built in 1960 and operated until 1987. It was then converted into a tourist attraction, and since 1988, it has been offering unique cruise experiences on the Gulf of Bothnia, the northernmost part of the Baltic Sea.

Walking on the ice in front of the icebreaker

The Icebreaker Sampo is an A1 Super class passenger icebreaker, which means it can break through any ice conditions. It’s an incredible feeling watching the ship tear through thick layers of ice so effortlessly. It’s no wonder why the cruise is one of the most famous and popular tourist attractions in Finland, attracting thousands of visitors every year from all over the world.

Sampo icebreaker model

But the most exciting part of the cruise is the ice floating activity, where you can wear a survival suit and jump into the icy water next to the ship. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you will never forget!

2 Where and when can you join the cruise?

The Icebreaker Sampo is in the port of Kemi, a town in the Lapland region of Finland. Kemi is about 110 km from Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland and the home of the Santa Claus Village – the official home of Santa Claus . We took a train from Rovaniemi to Kemi the day before our cruise and stayed at the Seaside Glass Villa . There’s also the option to be picked up from Rovaniemi directly (more on that in the booking section below ). Alternatively, you can also drive between the two cities .

The Icebreaker Sampo operates from December to April, when the sea is frozen enough for the ship to break through. The cruise season may vary depending on the weather and ice conditions, so it is advisable to check the availability before you plan your trip.

Looking at all the ice being crushed

The Icebreaker Sampo offers two types of cruises: the morning cruise and the afternoon cruise.

  • The morning cruise departs at 8:30 am and returns by 12:00 pm.
  • The afternoon cruise departs at 1:00 pm and returns by 4:30 pm.

Each cruise lasts for 3.5 hours, and includes the bus pick-up to the terminal, the tour of the ship, the ice floating activity, and the access to the SnowCastle of Kemi.

I recommend doing the morning session since winter daylight hours in Kemi are short, and you will have the greatest daylight hours in this session.

3 Checking in on the day

There are 4 pick-up areas you can choose from after making your booking. The bus will initially take you to the SnowCastle of Kemi to check in.

Snowcastle of kemi building

At the SnowCastle of Kemi, you will need to present your booking confirmation to get your activity wristband. You will get a briefing about the safety rules, as well as the schedule of the cruise. You can also store your luggage here if you’ve checked out from your hotel that morning.

luggage storage room at the snowcastle of kemi

Note that your activity wristband dictates the time you will be doing the ice floating activity. The best colours to get are silver, green, yellow, and red . If you get blue, purple, or white, politely ask if you can change to an earlier time when they give you the band.

wristbands sampo cruise

A couple that we met on the cruise unfortunately got the purple band, and since the cruise was running behind schedule, they got just 4-5 mins in the water before we had to turn back. People in earlier batches got to spend 15 to 20 minutes in the water!

ice floating schedule

After everyone is done checking in, the shuttle bus will take you to the cruise terminal, which is about a 15-minute drive from the SnowCastle of Kemi. The shuttle bus is included in the price of the cruise, and it runs according to the departure and arrival times of the cruise.

After being dropped off at the port, we were super excited to make our way onto the icebreaker!

4 Tour of the Ship

Once the ship departs, you are free to roam the ship and take photos outside. However, note that the ship tour takes place about 20 to 30 minutes into the journey. The tour is broken up into smaller groups and you will need to meet your guide at the restaurant area.

restaurant on icebreaker sampo cruise

If you aren’t at the meeting point when the tour starts, the guide will not wait for you since they are on a tight schedule.

The guided ship tour takes you to the most interesting and important parts of the Icebreaker Sampo. You will learn about the history, the features, the operations of the ship, as well as see how it works and what it can do. The tour of the ship includes the following stops:

The bridge is where you can meet the captain and the first officer, and see the navigation and communication systems of the ship. You can also enjoy the panoramic view of the sea and the ice from the windows of the bridge.

The crew were all very kind and more than happy to take photos with everyone.

The bridge of the ship

While most of the ship’s original equipment from its inception is still visible, parts of the ship have been equipped with modern navigational hardware.

The engine room

Here, you can see the powerful engines and generators that propel the ship and provide electricity. You can also hear the loud noise and feel the vibration of the machinery.

The ship’s engineers gave us a brief description of the equipment they use and what they do.

The communications room

Whilst this room is no longer used, it serves as a museum of sorts to showcase the equipment that was installed with the ship at inception.

The original ship logs and journals are also on display for you to flip through.

The icebreaker logbook

At the end of the guide, you can freely roam around the deck. You can also take some amazing photos and videos of the scenery and the ship.

5 Ice Floating in the Gulf of Bothnia

The ice floating in the Gulf of Bothnia is the highlight of the cruise, and the most exciting and memorable part of the experience. You will have the opportunity to wear a special survival suit that will keep you warm and dry, and jump into the freezing water next to the ship. We start by watching a safety instructional video in one of the change rooms.

safety video prior to wearing survival suit

Once done, it’s time to suit up and make your way onto the ice.

People in survival suits getting ready to jump into the water

The ice-floating activity is done in small groups, and it is supervised by trained and experienced staff. You will receive instructions on how to enter and exit the water, and how to float safely and comfortably. Before you head in, time for a quick photo!

Survival suit photo sampo cruise

I have to admit, stepping into the water was a bit scary because it feels like you’re about to sink. Thankfully, the survival suit is very buoyant and you will instantly float. The instructor will also hold on to the handle on the back of your suit to make sure you enter the water at a safe pace.

going into the water

The ice floating activity is optional, and you can choose to participate or not. However, if you’ve paid for this activity then of course you shouldn’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! Expect the floating to last about 15 minutes. It might not seem long, but there’s a fair amount of ab crunching and you start to get tired pretty quickly.

Ice floating

With the survival suit on, you do not feel cold at all. You may get the occasional splash of water onto your face, but the survival suit is sealed pretty tightly around your face, so there’s a lower chance of water getting in.

6 Walking on the Frozen Sea and Towing the Ship

Once we finished our ice-floating dip, we got changed and quickly headed out onto the ice. A fun and unique activity they let you do is tow the ship! How cool is that? Here you can see me giving it my all. The ship obviously moved forward.

Towing the sampo icebreaker cruise

7 Returning to the Port

As the icebreaker headed back to port, we spent more time on the deck of the ship taking photos for our new friends, and they helped us as well.

Happy customers at the end of our journey

Upon disembarking the ship, you get a certificate stating that you’ve completed the Sampo Icebreaker Cruise activity. Time to file this away with my degree.

Certificates issued at the end

8 Tips for a Successful Visit

  • Try and get a wristband with an earlier ice-floating slot
  • Make sure you’re on time for the guided tour. Ask your guide exactly what time the tour starts and where you should meet.
  • Make friends with someone preferably in a different timeslot. Help each other take photos during the ice floating. The guide may help you take a few photos, but chances are they will be busy helping others too! We got plenty of photos because we made friends that helped us!
  • You don’t need a spare change of clothes. However, if you are wearing thermals underneath, the guides will ask you to take off your outer clothes when getting into the survival suit. Don’t worry, we didn’t feel cold at all!
  • There is a restaurant onboard, but you can always bring some snacks or drinks if you so choose.
  • Bonus: As the ship heads back, there will be a scavenger hunt for the foldable Sampo cup pictured below. If you find it, you get to keep the cup as a souvenir and you can get a free hot chocolate or coffee from the café. The TVs will show where in the ship they’ve been hidden. Make sure to be quick before they’re all gone!

Make sure to book early as tour groups can book out the entire cruise during the peak December to February season.

The prices include the following services:

  • The 3.5-hour cruise on the Icebreaker Sampo
  • The guided tour of the ship
  • The ice-floating activity with the survival suit
  • The shuttle bus transportation from the pick-up area to the port and back
  • The entrance to the SnowCastle of Kemi

Icebreaker Sampo Cruise from Kemi

We decided to stay in Kemi overnight so we could visit the Ice Castle and SnowExperience 365 without the worry of being rushed back onto the bus to Rovaniemi.

The hotel we stayed at was the Seaside Glass Villas , which is the same location as where the cruise check-in point is located. This hotel is essentially a glass box, and provides a clear view of the entire frozen sea. If you’re lucky, you just might catch the northern lights from here!

Seaside Glass Villas

Icebreaker Sampo Cruise from Rovaniemi

If you’d prefer to do a day trip directly from Rovaniemi, that works as well. You should still have sufficient time to visit the Ice Castle and SnowExperience 365 if you book the morning cruise. However, if you book the afternoon cruise, the bus will be waiting at the port to bring you back to Rovaniemi immediately after the cruise.

10 Difference Between Icebreaker Sampo Cruise and Polar Express Icebreaker

When researching the icebreaker cruise, we noticed that there were two operators. We opted for the Icebreaker Sampo Cruise instead of the Polar Express. As you can see from the table below, the Polar Express departs from Sweden!

This means you have to spend roughly 2 to 3 hours each way on the bus. We also wanted to experience the Ice Castle in Kemi, which comes included in the price of the Sampo Cruise but not with the Polar Express Icebreaker.

Is the Icebreaker Sampo suitable for children?

Children are permitted on the cruise. However, they must be at least 140 cm tall (4 ft 6 inch) to fit into the survival suits.

What should I wear during the cruise?

Make sure to wear plenty of layers, including waterproof and windproof outerwear. Comfortable and insulated footwear, gloves, a hat, and other winter accessories are also recommended.

Is the Icebreaker Sampo cruise available year-round?

No, the cruise is a seasonal activity offered during the winter months when the sea is frozen. The exact operational period may vary, so it’s recommended to check the booking slots to see if the cruise is operating.

Our Verdict

Icebreaker sampo cruise.

The Icebreaker Sampo Cruise with Ice Floating is a unique and amazing experience that you should not miss if you are visiting Finland in the winter. I know it's a bit on the pricier side of things, but we saw it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and would have 100% regretted if we didn't do it.

  • Unique icebreaking journey

When we first traveled to Lapland I had never heard of this activity. But once I knew about the existence of the Sampo Icebreaker Cruise, it immediately went to the top of our wish list. Just keep reading and I’m sure once you finished this blog, you will want to do the Icebreaker Sampo Cruise experience as well.

History of Sampo

Sampo Icebreaker 2

Sampo is an icebreaker that actually operated as such during the years 1961-1987. After retiring from it’s official duties as icebreaker it ended up in its current role as a touristic icebreaker ship.

Sampo was built in 1960 at the Wärtsilä shipyard in Helsinki. In the 60s, Sampo belonged to the so-called new generation of icebreakers. The technical feature of which was two bow thrusters, which guaranteed an even stronger flow in the bow, which reduced the resistance in breaking ice.

Finland is the only country in the world where all ports freeze in winter. In normal winters, the mercury can even drop below -30°C during the coldest periods. Due to its geographical location, Finland’s import and export industry is largely dependent on sea transport, so keeping the winter ports open is essential in terms of international competitiveness. After being retired from its official duties, Sampo ended up in Kemi, being used for tourism.

Getting there

The Sampo Icebreaker cruises leave from the port of Kemi. Only travelers who have registered for cruises can access the port during the cruise.

They offer shuttle bus transportation from Kemi, Rovaniemi, Haparanda and Tornio. Pick up times depend on where you travel from and if you have the morning or afternoon cruise.

Sampo Icebreaker Cruise

It is clear that these cruises are not available all year round. The icebreaker season starts a little before Christmas and lasts about four months. Sampo is one of Finland’s most famous international tourism products.

We travelled to Kemi from Rovaniemi and had the afternoon cruise. Pick up from Rovaniemi city center is at 9AM. Around 10.30AM you arrive at the Kemi SnowCastle area where the check in for the Sampo Icebreaker cruise is located. Departure to the Sampo Icebreaker is around 12.30PM. In between check in and departure to the port, you have plenty of time to explore the SnowCastle area and have lunch, which is included. Lunch is a wonderful buffet with plenty of choices.

Upon check in for the cruise you get your timings for the guided tour of the ship and for your ice floating experience.

Sampo Icebreaker 4

Once you board the Icebreaker you’re welcomed by the crew and offered a welcome drink. And of course that can't be anything other than hot berry juice.

When everyone has boarded the ship, it sets sail for the frozen sea.

Sampo Icebreaker 1

The first part of the cruise is all about getting around on the ship. Have a look outside and see for yourself how Sampo breaks the ice.

This is also the time when the guided tours take place. Your time will be announced so that you do not miss the time slot.

Pulling Sampo Icebreaker

Once the Icebreaker comes to a stop and you have arrived at the destination, you’re free to leave the ship. You can now walk the frozen sea, which is truly something special.

Ice floating sampo cruise

Make sure you report on time for the ice floating experience, it is truly one of the best things to do when traveling to Lapland.

Sampo Icebreaker drone 4

Please pay attention when the return journey begins. A treasure hunt will then be organized where you have to look for a foldable cup. If you find one, you can keep it and win a hot drink.

Upon leaving the ship you will receive a diploma for this special experience

Sampo Guided Tour

Sampo Icebreaker tour 2

The Sampo Guided Tour is the first activity you will do once you have departed the port of Kemi. Upon check in for the Sampo you received your time slot for the guided tour. So make sure not to miss out.

Sampo Icebreaker tour 1

The tour shows you all the vital parts of the icebreaker.

You also get to see where you need to be to get into the ice floating suits later that afternoon. During the tour you also get the meet the crew on board. Feel free to ask them any questions you may have.

A little tip from us: the treasure hunt cups are already ready during these tours, so pay close attention so that you know exactly where to go later.

Walking on Ice

Sampo Icebreaker Walk on ice 1

Once Sampo comes to a stop and you can leave the ship, it’s kind of crazy to think that you’re actually walking on a frozen sea. There is plenty of time to take photos and enjoy being out on the sea.

Sampo Icebreaker Walk on ice 2

Don’t forget to walk to the front of the ship as there you’ll find the very best photo opportunity.

Sampo Icebreaker 3

And while you walk the frozen sea, also take a look next to you. It’s crazy to see that ship there while walking or standing right next to it.

Ice Floating Experience

Ice floating Ice floating sampo cruise 1

A bucket list experience I never knew I wanted to, until I did it. Honestly, this was next level. Floating in a survival suite next to the icebreaker in the icy sea water is absolutely a once in a lifetime experience.

You literally float between the blocks of ice. It’s hard to describe this experience. But if you ever get to try it, do it!

Sampo Icebreaker Review

Sampo Icebreaker drone 2

Sampo Icebreaker is an amazing experience. It’s totally different from many of the other bucket list worthy activities you can do in Lapland. The overall experience for me is absolutely perfect. The crew on board is very professional and are always ready to answer your questions or help you with whatever you need.

Sampo Icebreaker drone 3

Walking the ice and floating the sea right next to the ship is something different. This is one of the coolest things we ever did.

Ice Floating lapland

If you have a trip to Finnish Lapland planned, to any of the places Sampo offers shuttle services, then make sure you add a Sampo Icebreaker Cruise to your list of things to do. It’s a once in a lifetime experience which you will never forget.

Sampo Icebreaker Cruise & Ice Swimming in Kemi, Finland

Sampo Icebreaker Cruise

Here’s a once in a lifetime cruise you may not have heard of! Imagine being onboard a ship as it breaks the ice as it moves forward or swimming in a sea of ice. It sounds dangerous but the Sampo Icebreaker cruise in Kemi, Finland is anything but. While gaining in popularity the Sampo Icebreaker was the very FIRST icebreaker to allow tourists onboard. It cruises along the Baltic Sea in the Northern Gulf of Bothnia. This is one cruise you need to add to your bucket list!

Sampo Icebreaker cruise

We almost missed the Sampo Icebreaker cruise!

Our shuttle to the Sampo Icebreaker was late picking us up so we arrived about 5 minutes before the cruise was to depart. We quickly made our way into the building and gave our names to the man at the desk. For some reason, he didn’t have our reservation. After some discussion with the crew (telling them to wait) and our travel planner, we had tickets in our hand and made our way onto the ship. ( Just so you know, check in starts one hour before scheduled departure time and you can get on board 30 minutes prior. )

Sampo Icebreaker cruise tickets

After checking in, we made our way onboard the Sampo Icebreaker.

We met our enthusiastic tour guide who ushered us in to lunch. Included in the ticket price is the choice of reindeer herder’s soup, Icebreaker’s salmon soup, or cream of coconut-carrot soup. We chose the reindeer herder’s soup. Bread was also served. Drinks and dessert were available for purchase at an extra price.

Sampo Icebreaker cruise lunch

While we were enjoying lunch, the ship began to move. I snapped this picture just as we had started moving. We were really happy that we were on an afternoon tour because we were able to see versus the early morning tour that leaves when it’s dark outside.

Sampo Icebreaker cruise

After we finished eating, we headed outside to get a better view of the ice breaking.

Icebreaker cruise

The Sampo Icebreaker has a round hull so it glides over the top of the ice, then its weight comes crashing down into the ice breaking it apart. The sea here is able to freeze because of the low salt content. Every once in a while when the ice was too thick, the ship would back up, reposition, and press on forward.

Icebreaker cruise

Our guide gave us some history on the Sampo Icebreaker, as well as a tour.

Sampo Icebreaker cruise tour

The Sampo Icebreaker worked for the government for 25 years before it was retired. The ship was no longer useful at clearing the way because ships were becoming larger. Thanks to the mayor, he came up with the idea to use it as a tourist attraction. And now, the ship has been in service for tourism use longer than it did icebreaking for other ships.

Our tour brought us to the captain’s area. This was really awesome because it’s where the ship is controlled.

Sampo Icebreaker cruise

Then, we made our way down into the engine room.

Sampo icebreaker

Our guide explained the job duties of the staff onboard the ship. After our tour, the ship stopped for us to walk on the ice. As far as the eye could see was white. ( Make sure to dress warm so you can enjoy being outside on the frozen sea! )

Sampo Icebreaker cruise

Time to swim in the frozen sea!

Once we had enjoyed walking on the frozen sea, we got dressed in our thermal neoprene suits to swim in the freezing sea.

Frozen sea swimming

While keeping our clothes on, minus shoes, hats, and coat, we made our way outside to float. To enter the sea, we had to sit and then lie back as we were pushed into the water. It is important to keep your neck towards your chest to avoid the water going down the opening near the face.

We floated in the ice for a few minutes. It was fun pushing the ice around and just floating in the water. The suit kept us from sinking and getting cold. However, Chris played in the sea a bit longer than I did and said his hands started to get cold.

icebreaker cruise swimming

If was fun getting to float among big chunks of ice in the frozen sea. This was definitely a bucket list check!

ice swimming Kemi

After changing out of our suits, we explored the ship some more and continued to watch the ship break the ice as it move along its path back to the dock.

When we disembarked, we were presented with a certificate for our participation on the Sampo Icebreaker cruise.

Sampo Kemi

A port town where the Sampo icebreaker allows you to swim in the Arctic oceans.

Kemi is a northern port town lying at the gateway of Finnish Lapland on the shores of the Arctic Gulf of Bothnia. It's population is around 27,000 people mostly working in the pulp mills and the only chromium mine in Europe.

Kemi Lutheran Church is a Gothic Revival structure with an ornate, red-brick exterior. To the north, Bothnian Bay National Park has old fishing huts, rare plants and abundant birds, including Arctic terns. Just a stone’s throw from the sea, the Culture Centre also houses the city library, the city orchestra, the Kemi art museum and the city theatre.

The sheltered Kemi Guest Marina is located on a beautiful spot, just a few hundred metres from the city centre. Local yacht clubs with their restaurants, saunas, and other services provide pleasant visits.

It is also home to two tourist attractions - the world's largest snow castle (reconstructed every year with a different architecture) and the Sampo Icebreaker. The Icebreaker takes brave tourists on a 4 hour cruise and allows for time to swim in the Arctic ocean.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

sampo icebreaker cruise kemi

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
