We had a great time with Fjord Cycling. Due to weather, we had to adjust our planned routes, but Merete was fantastic in accommodating us along the way. The hotels were excellent. Would highly recommend.

Ann & Perry

Outstanding bikes and accessories like helmets and bags etc. But above all professional, personal, and friendly service! They know the region very well and gave us good advice for a beautiful cycling-trip.

Jolanda & Ton

It was a monstrous and exclusive trip with both exceptionally beautiful landscapes, excellent culinary specialties, good nature and cultural experiences and really good and timely guidance from the local tour guide.

Anne, Mathilde, Jakob & Bjarne Eiby

Thank you for making this a trip we will remember for a lifetime. We are grateful for all the efforts to make the trip memorable. What a wonderful adventure!

Sarah & Kathleen

We had an absolutely amazing trip to Norway. Fjord Cycling planned a custom biking and hiking adventure for us. We couldn’t have been happier with the route she put together. We have been on many, many European bike tours, guided and self guided, and I would rate Fjord Cycling as one of the top providers.

Brenda & Matt

This was fun, we had changing weather, and it was great nature experiences. Our bike ride in Sogn is not behind what we have experienced on a bike around Europe. Norway is just as good, and just as exciting!

Helen Haug & Torgeir Seim.

We had a fabulous time on our 6-day self-guided bike tour of Sognefjord. They were both friendly and helpful, thorough in arranging the details of our holiday and very knowledgeable about the area. It was one of our best cycling holidays ever and we would highly recommend Fjord Cycling to anyone considering a cycling holiday in Norway.

Mary & Dave

Truly a wonderful experience bike riding with Fjord cycling. Our trip had so many personal and exceptional touches that Merete added to the trip (Wine tasting, picnics and campfires are only a few examples). She truly cares for her guests.

Thank you for an absolutely excellent cycling adventure. It was truly memorable.

Routes to dream of

The very best cycling routes norway has to offer, all roads lead to nature.

We have broken down the routes in Norway into eight series. The National Cycle Routes are the official 9 long-distance routes established by the Norwegian Public Road Administration. The Atlantic Coast Route is part of the national routes but deserves its own series due to its length, popularity and natural attractions.

Cycle Norway is the architect of the Norse All-Road,   Gravel and Loop series. Here you will find many exciting shorter and longer routes that go beyond the typical known areas in Norway.

We understand some cyclists don’t just cycle Norway and may want to combine Denmark, Sweden, or Finland into the mix. Our  Scandi loops series will provide inspiration and guidance for multi country routes.

Important Info:

  • How we grade the difficulty of a routes
  • Opening and Closure of Roads
  • How to download and use the route GPX files

The Norwegian Scenic routes are famous historic roads. Most are covered already in other series, but felt they deserved a closer examination due to their status. And lastly, we have the Base, or better known as Day Rides from popular coastal cities and towns. You may be amazed at the short adventures to be had just beyond the city borders.

Please note, you will naturally find some routes overlap others due to the limited roads in mountainous regions. However, we believe the more alternative options you have available the better the decisions you can make. Happy route hunting!

Bikepacking / bike touring, the type of person:.

Our eight route series have primarily been put together to cater to the international cycling community. When we refer to ‘cyclist’ we are mainly alluding to people who own a bike and enjoy cycling as a recreational activity throughout the year or for some part of it. There is a big difference between a commuter on a bike who cycles 5-10km to work and a recreational cyclist who rides 60-100km on a Saturday morning for the joy of it.

We expect you to have experience cycling on the open road and are self-sufficient in looking after yourself with adequate clothing, safety, and maintenance gear. Norway, in general, is not a beginner environment for bike touring/bikepacking. You should have some level of fitness that can deal with the challenges of a mountainous country.

You will find  VisitNorway  caters better to beginners and families with young children. Nevertheless, we hope novice cyclists will also find this website helpful to a degree. The more experienced you become the more this site will benefit you.

The Type of Cycling

Let’s start by saying this site is not for MTB or Downhill Biking . You will find excellent sites regarding these sports all over Google. The one we recommend is  Trailguide .

Cycle Norway promotes Road and Gravel cycling that offers single-day, multi-day, and extended travels spanning weeks or months. We encourage and promote  bike touring & bikepacking, cycling for pleasure, adventure, or freedom rather than sport, commuting, or exercise.

The Type of Bike

Using a Road, Gravel, Mountain, or Touring bike will allow you to enjoy many of the routes on this site. What is right for you depends on your route and experience. The less experineced should use a bike with comfort and wider tires. Road bikes should only be considered for shorter paved only routes (less than a week). If you plan to cycle 2000km up to Nordkapp sitting on a road bike all day every day can be uncomfortable with it’s lower racing geometry.

A good alternative that won’t slow you down too much is an All-Road bike which has a little more design for comfort. On paved roads, It will feel like a road bike but can handle hard-packed gravel roads when required. If you plan several gravel sections and require further comfort then a Gravel bike is perfect for Norway. The geometry allows you to be in a more upright position but you can drop down when going at speed or fighting headwind. The versatility of these bikes has made them extremely popular over recent years and has been my bike of choice for bikepacking in Norway.

If you are less concerned with speed and more interested in comfort a mountain bike (MTB) is a good option that has built-in fork suspension and a comfortable wide tire setup. These bikes pretty much allow you to go anywhere. But on the paved roads, they will be considerably slower than the other bikes.  Lastly, a well-built touring bike is certainly a great all-round option for long-distance cycling. These bikes are comfortable, built to last, offer wide tire clearance, easier to maintain and service, and come with pannier and rack mounts to allow for a practical touring setup.

Remember, when considering a bike for touring always consider what can be fitted onto it and how easy it is to fit. Premium Road and Gravel bikes will probably not come with many eyelids/mounts making it difficult to attach racks, cages, and bags in certain places.

The Type of Tire

If I’m sticking mainly to paved roads I use between a 28-32mm slick tire to give me a balance between speed and comfort. If there are gravel sections that aren’t too rough I will use a 32-35mm with some tread/grip. If I’m doing a main gravel route with uneven and unknown terrain I will use a 40mm gravel tire. Some people prefer a bit more control and comfort and use 50mm tires.

Many touring tires like the Schwalbe Marathon Plus tire come with a 5mm thick puncture guard that makes them more or less puncture free. Tires like this add extra weight to your bike but offer piece of mind on the road. Whether you go tube or tubeless is too big of a question here. Ask in our member’s forum for advice on this.

Routes architects

Planning, researching, and riding routes is a long and difficult process. Cycle Norway prides itself on having some of the most experienced and knowledgeable adventure cyclists in the country. Together this team has cycled hundreds of thousands of kilometers in Norway and experienced every type of weather and road condition.

We can never guarantee that every route will be 100% accurate as small mistakes can happen and things can change without prior notice. However, quality control is an essential part of our company and if you notice any mistakes please contact us at [email protected] . We really appreciate your contribution to the website and our community.

Scenic Scandinavia and its Fjords (14 Days) Tour

Scenic Scandinavia and its Fjords (14 Days)

We could not have possibly seen all the sights that we did had we planned the tour ourselves. The organization of the itinerary, the efficiency of getting from one location to another, the coordination of the travel, luggage management, and entry to sights was superb. The scenery was breathtaking. Although we took many pictures, they do not do justice of seeing the areas in person. We traveled by coach from city to city and some days required extensive traveling. However, due to the skill of our professional driver and the expertise of our tour guide, the trips did not seem so long or taxing. In particular, our tour guide planned for multiple rest stops along the way and in some cases this involved a local treat that presented opportunities for unique snapshots. In almost all cases, the stops involved opportunities for food and refreshments. All breaks were welcomed. Despite the stops, we were always on time at our destinations or even early in some cases. At each city where we stayed overnight, there was always some scenic pleasure or local flavor to experience. Our tour director was exceptionally knowledgeable of the local areas and customs and always provided us with very helpful information to allow us to navigate around the area without difficulty. In addition, the tour director kept us lively and energized by sharing stories and history of the areas through which we were passing. She was quite skilled at keeping our group together and providing us with a rewarding experience. The only issues we had were with the weather (heat wave in the area with no air conditioning at most of the hotels) which we understand is not under Trafalgar's control. The hotels were OK for the most part, but we would have preferred an American style hotel. We also understand that the meals had to be buffet style, but we did not like the need to have to jostle and nudge to get our meals, especially when competing with other tour groups at the buffet line. With the heat, having to work for the meals was quite taxing and detracted from the experience somewhat. We also understand that the pace of the itinerary was necessary to cover the ground that we did, but a more leisurely pace would have been appreciated. Getting up early every morning and traveling all day and then trying to sleep in hot hotels with no air conditioning was a challenge on some days. But, despite some of these issues, overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the trip and glad we had the experience we did.

Focus on Scandinavia Tour

Focus on Scandinavia

There has been some renewed interest in Scandanavia as a touring destination, mainly among Australians and Americans (very few Brits) who have visited central Europe before and who now want to add something of the north to another tour or to their personal itineraries. Our party comprised 46 friendly travellers which was probably over the top for the pace of the tour and the management of the guests by the tour director, no matter how competent. Bus transportation was of good quality with safe, knowledgeable drivers which was a good thing as this tour clocks up over 2700km plus the odd ferry trip and a cruise on the Sogne Fjord. Check airport transfers are included. Our tour director Jane was well briefed and imparted all the essential information with good humour and in a clear manner. Guests should be prepared for longish days with only one or two hotel stopovers longer than the one night duration. For the cost of the holiday, the general standard of the hotels is sound to good. Much has been written about the location of some of the hotels being sometimes well away from the city centre but given there are several opportunities on optional tours (expensive) and included sightseeing to visit the central areas, this should not represent a problem. Denmark, Sweden and particularly Norway are expensive places to visit so be prepared to enjoy your included meals and maybe prepare your picnics for lunchtime stops. The breakfasts are almost entirely very good with lots of choice. Some , but not all, of the evening buffets are less appetising but one or two are excellent. Norway in particular is spectacularly scenic whilst Denmark, other than Copenhagen, is less eye catching. Tour guides are well prepared, speak excellent English and the use of whisper boxes is ideal. Previous reviewers are right in that this is a well presented and easily accessible tour, ideal for the first time visitor to Scandanavia who wishes to make a mental note of where they would like to visit or discover more on some future occasion.

Scenic Norway Tour

Scenic Norway

A very good and enjoyable tour led by an excellent guide (Peter) whose quiet informative and often humorous style was a key plus for our holiday. Also excellent was the driver Maciek and his coach - a very smooth journey up and down fjords, mountains and through all those tunnels. Hotels were a bit variable as below: OSLO - Thon Europa. Good location but small room and food was average. Staff helpful. RAULAND - hotel seemed a bit 'out of season' and the decor was a bit jaded. The pool complex was shut due to an electrical fault. Food average - not much choice at breakfast. BERGEN - Scandic Orner - smart business hotel but rooms very small. breakfast buffet excellent STALHEIM - best location for scenic views. Hotel seems a bit dated and decor a bit tired but has great atmosphere. Food OK Loen - Alexandra - best hotel by a mile. Wonderful pool complex. Food choice good and high quality. Lillehammer Scandic - big, busy resort hotel. Rooms were cramped but food choice and quality was good. Oslo - Scandic Victoria - Great location but a disappointing hotel. Rooms again small and food choice and quality poor. When I asked for some cream or ice cream to accompany my dessert (a piece of dry cake) I was told there wasn't any - really? Thankfully the weather behaved itself after a damp day or so in Bergen. I think the itinerary worked well and the mix of boat trip, train ride and fjord drives gave us a wonderful taster of Scenic Norway.

8 Days Guided Iceland Circle Tour

8 Days Guided Iceland Circle

Iceland is an incredible country to visit and the time we spent there was priceless. We had a technical problem: due to the weather the flight to Reykjavík was cancelled and postponed to the following day. We announced the travel agency and they provided a taxi in order th catch the tour. Instead to have a transportation from the company we had to pay an additional 300euros regardless was not our fault for the delay. Maybe you should consider such situation in your program. Another observation is about the guide. He was totally disinterested on our existence, totally unprepared to be a guide with knowledge, also a little bit impolite and rude.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
