The 5 best ways to get from Seattle to Vancouver

It's a beautiful trip from Seattle to Vancouver, regardless of how you get there

Crossing the border from Seattle to Vancouver is such a breeze, it’s very easy to forget you’re actually crossing a border in the first place. That’s why so many people in the US hop on a flight to Seattle to get to it: it’s easy, budget-friendly, and to be honest, pretty enjoyable too.

By car, the journey is about 2.5 hours. And if you’re not a driver (and don’t want to pay for gas), you might want to opt for a coach instead – it’s four hours, but it starts at $5. Yep, you heard us right. In fact, there’s plenty of ways to get from one to the other, and they all offer up scenic views as an extra treat. Here are the best ways to travel from Seattle to Vancouver right now.

Best ways to get from Seattle to Vancouver

Train

1.  Train

The  Amtrak Cascades train follows a scenic track from Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square district, up the craggy coast, to downtown Vancouver’s Pacific Central Station. With free wifi, power outlets at each seat, and far more legroom than your average airline, the journey is not just comfortable but convenient. Settle in on the train’s left side to get the best views of the wild coastline. The 110-mile journey takes four hours and heads north three to four times a day.

Plane

2.  Plane

If you have no time to waste, the best way to travel from Seattle to Vancouver is by air. Several major airlines, including United, Delta and Alaska, fly non-stop from Seattle’s Sea-Tac Airport to Vancouver International daily in about an hour. Public transit— Link Light Rail in Washington and  Canada Line in B.C.—will get you from town to your flight and vice versa in 30-40 minutes for under six bucks.

Kenmore Air and Harbour Air offer private charters, allowing you to skip the airport, but both have temporarily paused flights between the two countries.

Bus

3.  Bus

Besides driving, buses offer the most flexibility for travel between Seattle and Vancouver, especially if you’re on a budget. Four companies make the journey up Interstate 5 across the Canadian border, BoltBus , Quick Shuttle , Greyhound and Amtrak Thruway . All but Amtrak offer free onboard wifi and power outlets. The cheapest by far is BoltBus, some of whose seven daily trips north start at just a dollar. But all four companies take you from downtown to downtown in 3.25-4 hours several times a day for less than $50.

Car

4.  Car

In a car, it’s a quick shot up I-5 from Seattle to the Canadian border and on to Vancouver. Outside of rush hours, the trip typically takes 3-3.5 hours but although customs and Border Control is efficiently run, back-ups can slow your journey down. If you’ve got a schedule to keep, stay up-to-date on wait times on the Washington State Department of Traffic’s website .

Ferry

5.  Ferry

It is possible to travel by ferry from Seattle to Vancouver if you’ve got time to explore Victoria and Vancouver Island. Hop the Victoria Clipper at Pier 69 in downtown Seattle, for a trip across the sparkling Puget Sound to the B.C. capital, Victoria, that will take you just under three hours. Ferries run once a day except from May to September, when they depart twice daily.

From Victoria, you’ll need a second ferry headed for Vancouver or, more accurately, for Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay . The ride, which leaves several times a day, only takes about 90-minutes, but once you dock a t the ferry terminal, it’s another hour on public transit to downtown Vancouver. If you’re traveling with your own car, the drive downtown is about the same length, depending on traffic.

Top 5 airlines serving from seattle to vancouver.

Kelsey our pilot was fantastic. Really enjoyed the convenience of flying from Vancouver Harbour. Thank you Harbour Air!

The move to foreign ownership (well, 49%) plus a new CEO that comes with a mainline carrier’s mafia mindset of shaking down his customers for cash has degraded Harbour Air’S once stellar service. The front line staff (though lovely as always) have little autonomy now. Layer on higher fares, more restrictions, up to $5/lb for extra luggage… the list of awful changes goes on. I, with others, travel for business and financially supported the airline during the pandemic, only to see the value of Quick Tickets go steadily down the drain. Examples: $300-ish one-way ticket is now non-refundable, mega restrictions on changes, and lowered baggage weight. Really? I could fly Vancouver-LA for about the same price and Air Canada would have fewer ticket restrictions. It’s a shame.

Great ride. Much easier than the Ferry. Loved the view.

You guys did great, the only thing keeping me from the higher rating is the physical dimensions of the seats, which staff has no control over. Keep up the good job.

Flight was good. Glad it was delayed or I may have missed the connection since I got to Seattle at about the same time my connection was to leave. The snack was a small bag of pretzels and a small soda. Can’t really call that food. There was no entertainment available on the flight.

Same as the earlier flight. Bad boarding practices, uncomfortable seats, and no Wi-Fi service.

Everything was good. One of the flight attendants was not very friendly

Text and wifi were paywalled. I'm not looking for something fast, but not getting a text for ride coordination until back at the gate was a pain.

It was not a great flight. There was a software update delay which had us on the ground for almost 2 hours. I was unable to make my shuttle to my final destination.

Good. Quiet. Comfortable. The protests nearly kept me from catching my flight. They waited for me! I made it!

Red eye flight, so not expecting any extras, but the boarding and trip was smooth. Thx Alaska.

Received little assistance with air sick child. Crew’s main concern was if anything got on the seat belt!

I had to gate check my luggage and it was a pleasant experience as I never done that procedure before. Everything went smoothly.

Had a broken tray in business class. Crew just shrugged it off.

Everything was great except for the seat. The backrest would not stay in the upright position.

public website still broken for years randomly blocking browsers with privacy options active after loading a page maybe once. check-in on laptop was almost impossible but eventually randomly worked. had to print pass at airport since couldn't get back in to load digital pass on mobile firefox or chrome. red eye flight so smooth onboarding, plenty of room to spread out, easy offboarding. onboard wifi instructions mention vpn can cause problems connecting but fails to also mention private dns. no printed or built in menu list, seems weird to require personal device to point at qr code link for menu which does not even allow direct ordering. people with health condition risk related dietary restrictions trying to avoid for example cholesterol and sugar are left guessing what they can order either way without nutritional info highlights (cranberry juice was minute maid cocktail with as much suger as typical can of soda). tap to pay wasn't working and always seems sketchy to manually enter card info. good movie variety, so limited tv was okay.

Bag drop off was slow and annoying. Only 2 agents at the entire delta desk, and no one directing traffic for what line to be in, many confused people slowed down the process. Boarding was fine. Seats in Delta comfort plus were fine. Snacks were great! Definitely a bonus. The entertainment system was awful — old, slow, not responsive, and completely unable to play games due to some kind of error. But on the other hand, thank you to Delta for the free WiFi. That made it better.

Flight diverted in SD. Later take off in Seattle by 1.3hrs

Mi primera conexión se retrasó por lo cual perdí mi segunda conexión la cual salió adelantada

Crew was not friendly when I went to request a seat change.

There were choices for the snacks. Good choices and tasty lunch and breakfast as well.

The flight crew was amazing. I’m very tall and they moved me to an exit row unsolicited!!! Amazing service.

The boarding process was terrible especially with an indirect flight Chicago to Seattle to San Diego was terrible talking about we overbooked a flight idk if I’d take this airline ever again we got off our flight from Chicago to Seattle and we traveled for business and they told us our connecting flight was over booked and their was no seats asking people to take a delayed next flight and they don’t tell anyone coughing to wear masks seats 30A-B were terrible during the flight no one wants to sit next to people coughing all around I don’t want to be sick traveling for work or get sick anytime it’s very upsetting the staff doesn’t take this stuff serious to tell them to wear masks when they see people coughing and sneezing

Positive: Entertainment via phone on the short was great and my first time. Good food and wine and head phones for free. Negative: Seat hardly reclined on the long flight. Breakfast was an egg with a bun. No egg choices and rather have something sweet like bun/jam and Youghurt.

Aircraft has better leg room than any of United's larger planes. We had requested mobility assistance for this and related flights. United's response to all was superb.

No snacks served! Seating in the kast row in uncomfortable.

By in large it was a good experience. The flight crew was great and that's the most important to me. Boarding was fine.

Flight was fine, it was delayed but only 30 minutes, staff were efficient, lady making announcements at LAX was really hard to understand but the rest were great.

The male air hostess was rude and didn’t even offer me a drink. Poor customer service!

We left really late. Things that were out if anybody’s control I guess.

The weather caused a delayed but I was impressed how United did everything they could to try to get us out which included bussing us to the plane doing a Hardstand and bringing us to the plane since the fog was too thick to tow the plane from the overnight stay in the cargo area.

Food was really good. Chicken curry delicious. Great service. Had 3 seats, what a pleasure. What about a healthier desert option on the dinner? Yogurt, fruit? Thankyou

When I purchased my ticket, I assumed it was a real ticket, as in, when I go to the airport I am guaranteed a seat. Not so. When I checked in 24 hours ahead of time, I noticed I did not have a seat assignment and my boarding pass said "Standby." I was informed at the gate that the flight was full and I may not get on that plane. I don't recall being offered the option of selecting a seat when I checked in, and apparently, for the honor of pre-selecting a seat, you must pay an additional fee. So, a ticket really isn't a ticket, it's actually a lottery and if you're lucky, you may make it on board - or you can choose to be extorted for extra money for the guarantee of a seat. It's like making reservations with the Godfather - one payment isn't enough, there's always another bribe you have to make. After the first few zones were called and I hadn't been informed of my status, I went to the gate agent and they handed me a boarding pass, for the very last row near the restrooms, in between two very large people. Apparently that was my punishment for not purchasing a seat ahead of time. Airline service has not only gotten more expensive, but the return on your money has shrunk and there is little regard for the passengers. This feels like a racket. I am not pleased, as you may have gathered.

Flight was delayed 1.5 hrs due to problem with a previous flight to mine; I was informed appropriately via Text & Email, however, website did not keep up with messages sent by nearly an hour. When checking-in warm & friendly reception at check-in desk until female Air Canada Rep noticed my flight number and instantly pivoted to a condescending & sarcastic comments about getting my bag checked in since I’m running so late; then tone instantly changed again few minutes later when she muttered, “Oh, they’ve delayed it” another sign systems & worse front line staff, not fully informed or simply not reading their flight status updates. Flight crew were very friendly & did a great job trying to make up lost time due to the delay.

It was great, love the experience and will definitely recommend 👌. Communication was great

It was great to check carryon luggage at no charge when there was no room for ours. A hidden benefit of having low-tier tickets. Also great to stay off plane as long as possible. Airline gave us seats we wanted on this last leg, again at no charge.

We had a good flight, service was good and lots of leg room. Service was good and the staff were friendly.

Short flight, crew members were very nice, so much so I'll take the return flight next weekend

It was fine. The seating was tight. My husband is 6' 2", so we were glad to get seats with no one in front of him. I was glad that the plane wasn't packed so I could spread out.

I liked Seattle but nothing air Canada did there was any good at all neither was kayak as when I purchased my flights the price I purchased at was not what kayak charged to my card and there has been no responses to my emails ....

Flew in Business Class. The new AC lounge at SFO is one of the best I’ve been to with a spacious design and an open air deck. Flight itself was on-time and as expected overall.

No food, not even snacks on the 6hr flight from Newark to Vancouver! The movie collection made up for it though and they did come around with drinks twice. Just good to know so you can eat ahead/bring snacks onto the flight. It was a bumpy ride induced by wind and rain but otherwise got to the destination safely and promptly.

On the flight back from SFO to Vancouver ..the crew was less than professional. They completely missed asking if I wanted a drink (and I was awake at all times) and I had to walk to the back of the plane to ask for a cup of water to take with my medication. Also, there was a charge for ear adapters for the movie screen which were given out free on the flight from Vancouver to SFO. The flight from Vancouver to SFO had pleasant crew members. What a difference in the flight back.

How to get from vancouver to seattle.

The view of Seattle from Puget Sound

So, how do you get from Vancouver to Seattle?

The distance between Vancouver and Seattle is 192 kilometres (or 119 miles).

In other words, the Emerald City can be reached in about 2.5 hours , depending on traffic at the border.

For this reason, visitors to the Pacific Northwest region often pair the two cities together on the same itinerary, a choice which we highly recommend .

Let’s take a look at the best ways to get to Seattle from Vancouver:

Driving from Vancouver to Seattle

A woman takes a picture from a moving vehicle

With a driving distance of only  225 kilometres (140 miles) , the simplest method to get between Vancouver and Seattle is simply to take your own vehicle.

Depending on traffic and the wait at the border, the trip should only take you about  3-3.5 hours .

Driving provides the highest degree of flexibility, comfort and convenience . You can leave whenever you want and are free to stop anywhere you want during the trip.

Furthermore, the cost of car rental compares favourably with a return trip on the train or bus, particularly for groups and families.

Vancouver to Seattle Car Rental

A man receives his rental vehicle

From a logistics standpoint, renting a vehicle from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) makes the most sense, though it’s a breeze from downtown as well.

For starters, all of the major car rental companies are located on the ground floor of the YVR parkade. This provides for a high degree of competition and the best rates.

Couple that with the accessibility offered by YVR’s transportation infrastructure and close proximity to HWY-99, and it’s a no-brainer.

Looking to rent a car? Rentalcars.com is the most reliable online booking platform and has a low price guarantee .

Vancouver to Seattle Floatplane

A Harbour Air floatplane sits in Vancouver Harbour

The floatplane from Vancouver to Seattle is the most convenient, most scenic, most unforgettable way to travel between the two cities.

I’m ranking this the #2 Vancouver to Seattle transport option because when you factor in time, taxis to the airport, and luggage, there isn’t much difference in price between this and regular flights.

Except seaplanes take just just 55 minutes – about the time you’ll spend going through security at YVR.

They also fly you right into the seaplane terminal in downtown Seattle (Seattle’s airport meanwhile is 40 minutes away and not well connected).

Beyond all this, you get breathtaking views of the Pacific Coast all the way down, as well as an aerial tour of the two cities. This is a tourist attraction in itself.

Vancouver to Seattle Train

The Amtrak Cascades travels alongside the coast

Avoid the lengthy border delays and the notorious traffic of Seattle’s I-5 as you enjoy spectacular coastal views aboard the Amtrak Cascades.

Convenient, affordable and efficient, the Vancouver to Seattle train operates twice daily, connecting Vancouver’s Pacific Central Station with King Street Station in Downtown Seattle.

One trip daily continues all the way to Portland, Oregon.

You can expect to arrive in Seattle in 4.5 hours , with an extra 3 hours required to go on to Portland.

Here are a few pros:

Vancouver to Seattle Flights

Planes sit on the tarmac at YVR

Due to the relatively close proximity between the two cities, many people are surprised to learn about the wide availability of flights between Vancouver and Seattle.

There are numerous carriers offering service between Vancouver International (YVR) and Seatac (SEA), including:

  • Alaska Airlines
  • Air New Zealand

But are they viable options for tourists travelling between the two cities?  Consider the following:

The main reason for the wide range of flight options is the sheer number of Pacific Northwest residents who are connecting to other destinations in the United States, Canada and Asia.

Flights Between Vancouver and Seattle are often bundled onto flights to other destinations  at  a minimal cost and are rarely purchased as a stand-alone option.

Consequently, the overwhelming majority of passengers travelling between YVR and SEA are business travellers or local residents connecting to more distant locations.

You can expect to pay upwards of  $217  for a one-way flight to Seattle from YVR. It’s up to you whether you’re willing to pay this much for a 50-minute flight that fails to reach reach cruising altitude.

To take a closer look at the flight options on offer, visit  Skyscanner.net .

If you do decide to book a flight to Seattle, be cognizant of the following:

  • It’ll likely take 30 minutes  to get from Downtown Vancouver to YVR.
  • You’re expected to arrive 2 hours  prior to departure in order to clear US customs.
  • It’ll take an additional 40 minutes  to get from SeaTac Airport to Downtown Seattle via the Linkrail.

vancouver whale tour banner

Due to these factors, all of your time savings will have gone up in smoke.

Couple this with the stark realization that you’re likely to pay up to  four times the cost of other transportation options and we can’t confidently recommend this option for anyone other than business travelers.

But before you completely discount flying as an option, let’s take a look at a newly launched service that has a prototypically Pacific North West feel.

Vancouver to Seattle Ferry (Via Victoria)

a ferry painted on white, red, and blue color sailing through the sea from vancouver to seattle with a calm weather

Not in a hurry? Opt for a leisurely journey by taking the ferry from either Tsawwassen or Horseshoe Bay across the Strait of Georgia to Victoria , and then catch a second ferry to make your way down to Seattle.

This option is perfect for those who appreciate a more relaxed pace – the ferry from Vancouver to Victoria takes approximately an hour and a half, while the second leg from Victoria to Seattle lasts around 2 hours and 45 minutes .

Keep in mind, though, that this doesn’t include the time it takes to reach the ferry terminal from Vancouver (both Tsawwassen and Horseshoe Bay require a bit of driving).

Additionally, you’ll need to factor in the time to arrive at the ferry terminal well ahead of the departure time. Adding a layer of complexity, the Victoria-Seattle ferry departs from a different terminal in downtown Victoria .

Admittedly, it’s not the quickest route, but it offers breathtaking scenery. If you’re contemplating a side trip to spend a few days in Victoria , this might just be the ideal way to savour the beauty of the West Coast .

If you’ve already reached your destination and find yourself considering a return trip from Seattle to Victoria ferry after a few days, this route is still a great option.

Vancouver to Seattle Ferry Price

3 ways to get from Seattle to Vancouver

Hopping between these two cities is a breeze, even though they’re on different sides of the u.s.-canada border..

Sarah Kuta

Traveling between Seattle and Vancouver is so straightforward you just might forget these two cities—about 143 miles apart—are located in different countries.

Seattle, located on the Puget Sound in northwest Washington , is a high-tech hub with a robust arts and culture scene and easy access to nature. Just across the United States–Canada border in southwest British Columbia , lies Vancouver, a diverse, cosmopolitan city with equally stunning natural scenery.

If you’re planning a trip to this region of North America , it’s worth your time to visit both cities. Whether you decide to drive, ride the train, take the bus, or hop on a ferry, you’ll find a Seattle-to-Vancouver transportation option that matches your budget and your timeline. Here’s what you need to know as you start crafting your itinerary.

Before we get into the logistics, a friendly reminder to pack your passport for this journey. You can alternatively use a U.S. passport card instead of the full booklet if you’re a U.S. citizen driving, riding the train, or taking the ferry.

Seattle to Vancouver by train

King Street Station in Seattle

Marvel at the coastal views out the window while riding the Amtrak Cascades route from Seattle to Vancouver. This comfortable train ride departs from Seattle’s King Street Station and arrives at Vancouver’s Pacific Central Station in roughly four hours, with a handful of stops in Washington along the way. And if you need to tear your eyes away from the scenery outside to get some work done, Amtrak offers free Wi-Fi, power outlets, and reading lights to customers in all fare classes. Prices typically range from $30 to $110. When you’re booking, just make sure you select Vancouver, British Columbia, as your destination as Amtrak also offers service from Seattle to Vancouver, WA .

Both train stations are conveniently located in or near downtown in their respective cities, and they’re both beautiful historic buildings. If you’re an architecture aficionado or a history buff, plan to spend a little extra time on each end of the trip. King Street Station first opened in 1906 and combines elements of the Beaux Arts and Italian architectural styles, while Pacific Central Station dates back to 1919 and is firmly in the Beaux Arts camp.

Seattle to Vancouver by car or bus

Elevated view of Interstate 5 and Seattle downtown skyline

By car, the 140-mile trip up Interstate 5 takes roughly 2.5 hours, provided you’re not trying to make the trip during rush-hour traffic. As you enter Canada , you’ll need to stop at the border crossing, which could also add some time to the journey. To stay in the loop, bookmark the Washington State Department of Transportation’s website to see up-to-date wait times .

You can also travel from Seattle to Vancouver by bus. Cantrail Coach Lines runs a convenient bus route that departs from King Street Station and arrives at Pacific Central Station multiple times per day. The bus journey takes approximately three-and-a-half hours, and fares start at $45 one-way. You can book a ticket directly through Cantrail or via Amtrak. FlixBus is another option, with multiple buses departing for Vancouver each day and fares starting around $30. FlixBus offers several departure locations in Seattle, including Seattle-Tacoma International Airport , the University of Washington campus, and the Chinatown-International District . The company also offers several drop-off locations in Vancouver, such as Pacific Central Station and Burrard Station , so pay close attention when booking your ticket.

Seattle to Vancouver by ferry

BC Ferries on traveling towards Vancouver Island

For a more leisurely jaunt from Seattle to Vancouver, consider taking the ferry. While there’s no direct Seattle-to-Vancouver ferry route, you can still travel between the two cities by water if you have time for a little side trip to Victoria , British Columbia.

The Victoria Clipper departs from Pier 69 in Seattle, then makes the approximately three-hour journey across Puget Sound to Victoria, which is located on Vancouver Island . The Clipper is a passenger-only ferry, so you’ll have to leave your car behind for this trip. The company’s catamarans are spacious and comfortable, and you can order food and drinks or shop for souvenirs (some of them duty-free!) while onboard. And be sure to keep your eyes trained on the water, as the Salish Sea is brimming with orca, humpback, gray, and minke whales. The Clipper fare typically starts around $110.

Once in Victoria, you’ll then need to board a separate ferry—this one run by BC Ferries —for the hour-and-a-half ride to Tsawwassen, a small community south of downtown Vancouver. From Tsawwassen , you can take public transit, use a rideshare app, or get a friend to pick you up and drive you the rest of the way into Vancouver. For those traveling without a vehicle, tickets start around $20.

In short, taking a ferry from Seattle to Vancouver requires a little extra logistical maneuvering, but it’s definitely doable. And if you don’t mind the extra time or planning involved, it’s a good way to see even more of this beautiful region.

One more option …

You can also get from Seattle to Vancouver by plane, with multiple airlines offering direct flights between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Vancouver International Airport each day. Once you’re in the air, the trip takes roughly an hour, but flights between the two cities generally aren’t cheap—a one-way ticket can cost between $250 and $400—and if you factor in time to/from the airport and arriving in time for your flight, you’re likely not going to save any time compared to driving, the bus, or the train.

How far is Vancouver (Washington) from Seattle? Here's the quick answer if you have a private jet and you can fly in the fastest possible straight line.

Flight distance: 138 miles or 222 km

Compare this to a whole day of commercial travel with the airports and waiting in line for security, which ends up taking a total of 4 hours, 3 minutes .

Flying private is roughly 4.8x faster , and saves you about 3 hours in your total travel time.

Because of the curvature of the Earth, the shortest distance is actually the "great circle" distance, or "as the crow flies" which is calculated using an iterative Vincenty formula.

Seattle to Vancouver Canadian Border Crossings

seattle to vancouver travel time

Driving from Seattle to Vancouver takes two and a half to to three hours under normal conditions in reasonable traffic and with no excessive lineups at the border.

Border crossing times are generally shorter heading north from Seattle to Vancouver, so the trip north often is shorter than the one from Vancouver to Seattle. Crossing into the U.S. is a more time-consuming process.

The Drive Between Seattle and Vancouver

The drive is a pleasant one. The most direct route is on the I-5 North; however, consider expanding the drive to include some additional highlights along the way. Chuckanut Drive is an old two-lane highway that runs from Interstate 5 just north of Mt. Vernon (60 miles from Seattle) that will only take an extra half hour or so but will reward you with stunning vistas of Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands.

Crossing the U.S./Canada Border

There are four border crossing options when driving between Seattle, WA, to Vancouver, B.C. They are from west to east: Peace Arch; the Pacific Highway, or "Truck Crossing" as it's commonly known; Lynden/Aldergrove and Sumas/Huntingdon. The first bit of advice is to check Northbound Border Wait Times to see current waits at each crossing. Also, tune your radio to AM730 to hear traffic updates. Although the northbound wait is generally less than that of the southbound, there is still a pattern of less traffic in the morning, with traffic peaking mid-day and remaining heavier until around 6 p.m. Northbound traffic at the border on weekends tends to peak later and be busiest between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Which Border Crossing Is the Best One?

The border crossing that is best for you depends on whether your priority is just to make the crossing as quickly as possible or if duty-free shopping is also important. 1 . The Peace Arch crossing is the main crossing and tends to be the busiest (it is, in fact, the third most active U.S./Canada border crossing, averaging almost 5000 cars passing through per day). Not only is Peace Arch busy, but it also lacks duty-free shopping (duty-free shopping is available southbound only). The adjacent Pacific Highway (the Truck Crossing) is open to non-commercial traffic, is generally faster than Peace Arch and has duty free shopping. Peace Arch traffic congestion peaks at 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. NEXUS lanes are available northbound and southbound. Two other border crossing options, slightly farther east are the Lynden/Aldergrove and Sumas/Huntingdon crossings. Both have duty free shopping.

2. The Lynden/Aldergrove crossing is accessed to Canada by Guide Meridian coming from Lynden Washington (follow signs for Lynden). When entering Canada you will end up on 264 Street, if you carry on 264th it will take you to Hwy 1, head west to Vancouver about 45 minutes to downtown. This crossing is 35 mi/59 km east of Vancouver. However, if you're traveling to the North Shore or to the east side of Vancouver, this crossing is worth considering. The wait is usually less than five minutes. Note that it is not open 24 hrs a day.

3. The Sumas/Huntingdon crossing enters Canada from Washington State by Easterbrook Road turning into Sumas Way and ending up in Abbotsford BC. It is open 24 hours but is 43 miles (72 km) east of Vancouver, which adds on travel time, even if saving on border wait time. However, if you get off the I-5 at Bellingham and drive to Mt. Baker and onto Sumas, you'll see some gorgeous scenery.

This border crossing has NEXUS-dedicated lanes bound in both directions.

If you’re planning a Seattle to Vancouver drive, use this itinerary to ensure an unforgettable adventure.

Seattle, WA and Vancouver, BC are two of the region’s most diverse metropolitan cities. Separated by an international border but just a short distance apart, each features ample opportunities for all types of travelers, from art aficionados and foodies to history and culture buffs, backpackers, nature lovers, Sasquatch chasers, and everyone in between.

Though not far from each other, there are plenty of interesting places to stop at between them, turning a potentially boring drive into an exciting road trip!

Table of Contents

Planning a Seattle to Vancouver Drive

The route from Seattle to Vancouver is an oft-traveled one, both by locals and road trippers. As in most of the west side of Washington state, the greater Seattle area’s roadways are generally well-kept, with frequent rest areas and gas stations along the main routes.

When planning, bear in mind crossing into Canada may take some time. There are 13 crossings between Washington state and British Columbia, four of which provide a direct Seattle to Vancouver route. Unsurprisingly, these ports are by far the busiest.

The process of getting into Canada is usually straightforward and unintimidating. As you might expect, Canadian officers generally tend to be cheerier than those on the other side of the border.

However, the queue can be long, extending your travel time by several minutes or up to four hours, depending on how unlucky you get. You can check Canadian Border Traffic to see current wait times at each crossing point.

If possible, avoid making your northbound crossing between 6 and 10 p.m. on the weekend, as this is usually the busiest period. Also, note going back into the U.S. typically takes longer, so plan accordingly.

July, August, and September are the busiest months. Of course, they’re also the nicest weather-wise, but it is something to consider when deciding when to take your road trip. If you do the drive in April, you have the opportunity to stop at the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in Mount Vernon, not far from Seattle and just east of La Conner.

Vancouver, Canada

Another factor to keep in mind is both Emerald City and Vancouver are notoriously jammed during rush hour. If you’re doing this road trip from Seattle to Vancouver during the week, avoid traveling at peak times to avoid wasting time inching down the highway amid a deluge of car horns when you could be out exploring.

Obviously, most people will need a passport to cross this international border, like any other. But if you are a U.S. citizen and resident of Washington state, Minnesota, South Dakota, Michigan, New York, or Vermont with an Enhanced Identification Card (EIC) or Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL), you can pass from the U.S. into Canada without a passport.

If you’re renting a car, you’ll need your rental documentation as well. You can check out Rentalcars.com for deals on car hire, or alternatively, visit Outdoorsy for RVs and campervans which can be used to extend your trip to places like Banff or Jasper National Parks.

How Far is Vancouver from Seattle?

The distance from Seattle to Vancouver is about 140 miles. Naturally, the duration will vary depending on the route you take and your travel method. But the average Seattle to Vancouver drive time is about 2.5 to 3 hours non-stop.

You have a few options when it comes to transport, including a BoltBus or Greyhound, plane, train, or driving.

Public transit is doable, but it will require more planning compared to driving your own vehicle, so the latter is highly recommended.

If driving, you can take the Seattle to Victoria Clipper from the Pier 69 in downtown Seattle to Victoria, BC. This ferry runs twice daily from May to September and once daily the rest of the year and will give you lovely views of Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands .

You’d then take a second ferry to Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay, which takes about 90 minutes. From there, you can drive to downtown Vancouver in about an hour.

You can also drive to Port Angeles and take the Black Ball Ferry Line to Victoria, BC, from there. Again, you’d need to take a second ferry to get to downtown Vancouver, but if you enjoy being out on the water and want to see more of Puget Sound and the Salish Sea, a maritime route might be the one for you.

View of Puget Sound

Another option is to follow the Interstate 5 route between Seattle to Vancouver. You can either stick to the freeway if you’re on a tighter schedule or take one or more side trips via the network of connecting highways.

After crossing the border past the town of Blaine, you’ll take Highway 99 the rest of the way to Vancouver.

There are four main border crossings: Peace Arch, Pacific Highway (Truck Crossing), Lynden/Aldergrove, and Sumas/Abbotsford. Peace Arch is the highest traffic, with the longest lines. Pacific Highway is usually least congested.

Best Seattle to Vancouver Stops

Olympic national park, washington .

If you decide to take the ferry from Port Angeles when driving between Seattle and Vancouver and have the time, consider staying here for a night or two and checking out nearby Olympic National Park .

Just 15 minutes away from the city center, Olympic National Park is one of the state’s most revered treasures, encompassing nearly one million acres and 70 miles of coastline, as well as several distinct ecosystems, from mountain range to rainforest. Yes, a rainforest in the U.S. I know it’s wild, but that’s the Pacific Northwest for you.

You can also camp in the park, which I highly recommend if you’re traveling between late spring and early autumn.

Hall of Mosses in Olympic National Park

Boeing Factory Tour, Washington

Alternatively, if you’re taking the land route via I-5 and are interested in aviation and industry, stop by Everett, WA, and take a Boeing Factory Tour. The Boeing Factory employs multitudes of locals and is, as you can imagine, a huge source of local pride.

Here, workers assemble some of the world’s most widely-used airplanes, including the Boeing 747, 767, 777, and 787. The tour takes a couple of hours and offers a different perspective on the travel experience.

Wenatchee Wineries, Washington

Another of the best things to do between Seattle and Vancouver is to get a taste of Washington wine in Wenatchee.

Though little-known compared to other American mega-producers like Napa Valley or Sonoma, Wenatchee, a rural agrarian community nestled against the Canadian border in Washington state, has earned aplomb in the wine world over the past several years.

The community grows 99% of the state’s wine grapes, including highly-acclaimed Chardonnay and Riesling.

Visit a tasting room or tour one of the wineries, like Chateau Faire Le Pont Winery , Martin Scott Winery , or Stemilt Creek Winery , and be sure to grab some local produce as well. The wineries aren’t the only ones with incredible taste!

Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, Washington

The greater Wenatchee area is also home to the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, another lesser-known gem and a worthwhile stop.

The forest encompasses 1,735,394 acres, with 137 miles bordering the eastern side of the Cascade Mountain Range . Remote and relatively low traffic, it’s the ideal place for those who’d prefer to hike, or forest-bathe, in solitude.

However, it is essential to note that the Okanogan-Wenatchee region, and much of the state’s Central area, is highly susceptible to forest fires from about May until September each year, with July and August being the highest risk.

Obviously, you’ll need to avoid the area if there’s a blaze, so I recommend visiting in spring or autumn to err on the side of caution.

Wenatchee in autumn

Whidbey Island, Washington

Instead of heading straight north, you can go west from I-5 to Mukilteo and take the ferry to Whidbey Island .

A popular weekend getaway for Seattleites, the misty isle features miles of coastline, quaint small towns, and the famous Deception Pass State Park and Deception Pass Bridge. While this can add several hours to your trip, it’s worthwhile if you have the time to spare.

Stop first in Langley, a laid-back and proudly quirky artists’ haven with an unusual, adorable bunny “problem.”

Then head up the highway to Greenbank Farm to stroll the grounds, check out local art, and stock up on locally-made provisions. Next, stop by Coupeville and check out the historic downtown core, including its iconic pier, as well as Ebey’s Landing, with its sweeping views of fields and sea.

Then head a few minutes up the highway to Fort Casey, a mid-20th century Naval Air Force base. Finally, drive through Oak Harbor to Deception Pass State Par.

Take a hike on one of the many forest and seaside trails and stop for a photo at the awe-inspiring Deception Pass Bridge, with its jaw-dropping views of rugged cliffs and evergreens enshrouded in mist, tumbling into the churning blue water below.

Iconic Bridge at Deception Pass

Chuckanut Drive, Washington

Known as Washington state’s Big Sur , Chuckanut Drive is a scenic 20-mile stretch of highway skirting the perimeter of Mount Chuckanut and the lovely Larrabee State Park.

The route is incredibly gorgeous with plenty of natural beauty and breathtaking scenery, especially in autumn, when the slopes are aflame in a cornucopia of vibrant colors. As it’s just a short detour off of I-5, it’s a must as part of a scenic drive.

Bellingham, Washington

Bellingham is a small coastal city just south of the Canadian border. Home to Western Washington University and surrounded by farmland and fishing, it’s similar to Olympia, WA, in that it’s a little bit hippie and a little down-home. If you’re hankering for some vegan or vegetarian eats before you enter Canada, this is the place.

The port has ferries to Alaska, and to the east is snow-capped Mount Baker, a massive volcano with forest hikes and ski runs.

Within city limits, the Whatcom Museum is a great stop for art and history lovers, while the SPARK Museum of Electrical Innovation is the place for science enthusiasts, with interactive, hands-on exhibits.

Whatcom Falls Park is another must in Bellingham. This 241-acre park features well-kept walking trails and a remarkable four sets of waterfalls stemming from Whatcom Creek, which connects Lake Whatcom to Bellingham Bay.

The town of Fairhaven to the south is also another great place for fans of craft beer and artisan shops. And head a bit north to take in lovely Birch Bay State Park for some great coastal scenery.

Whatcom Falls Park

Campbell Valley Regional Park, British Columbia

Campbell Valley Regional Park is a bit unusual as it’s built on six historical farmland plots. Located in Langley, B.C., it’s a lovely spot for a casual hike in its extensive trail network.

The Campbell Valley Little River Trail, a short 1.4-mile loop suitable for all skill levels, is one of the most popular routes.

Golden Ears Provincial Park, British Columbia

I must admit I was a little disappointed Golden Ears Provincial Park is not named after someone’s beloved golden retriever or butterscotch-hued bunny rabbit.

In fact, its moniker comes from the two prominent peaks of Mt. Blanshard, commonly called Golden Ears, formerly spelled Golden Eyries.

Initially, the name may have referred to golden eagles spotted from the mountain’s summit, which makes a lot more sense since the peaks really don’t look anything like golden ears.

But the park has much more to offer than an unusual name.

At just over 214 square miles or 555 kilometers, the park is one of the province’s largest. It features beautiful forested hiking trails, camping, and water recreation (swimming, windsurfing, canoeing, fishing, boating, etc.) at sparkling Alouette Lake.

Richmond, British Columbia

Like Vancouver proper, nearby Richmond is known for its Asian heritage and influence.

Check out the International Buddhist Temple, one of the largest Buddhist temples in North America, a magnificent, elaborate complex designed in the fashion of Beijing’s Forbidden City.

Then head to the Golden Village District to shop and grab a bite at one of the many Asian eateries and shops.

International Buddhist Temple in Richmond

Deas Island Regional Park, British Columbia

Located in South Vancouver on an island in the lower Fraser River, Deas Island Regional Park is a sprawling wooded park with hiking and horseback-riding trails plus fishing and boating.

Named after an African-Canadian tinsmith who established a cannery on the island in 1873, it’s the perfect place for a peaceful stroll before continuing your Vancouver to Seattle drive heading into the buzzy big city.

North Vancouver, British Columbia

As the name denotes, North Vancouver is just north of Vancouver but it is a distinct city. Go for a hike in the North Shore Mountains and take a cable car ride on Grouse Mountain.

Take a mildly terrifying stroll along the suspension bridges of Capilano Canyon and Lynn Canyon.

Then spend some time at Lonsdale Quay Market , a seaside market featuring over 60 locally-owned shops and eateries serving everything from burgers and pizza to souvlaki and banh mi.

On a nice day, take your eats to the waterfront for a picnic at Cates Park.

Tips for Safe Driving

seattle to vancouver travel time

To ensure safe driving during your Seattle to Vancouver road trip, implement the expert tips outlined in this section. Follow speed limits and traffic rules, and be prepared for weather changes to avoid any potential hazards on the road.

Follow Speed Limits and Traffic Rules

Abiding by Traffic Regulations for Safe Driving

Striving to become a safe driver is essential than being speedy on the road. To prevent accidents, it is crucial to follow traffic rules and regulations. These guidelines are set in place to protect you and other drivers from harm or injury. Your safety must be your top priority.

Leading experts suggest that adhering to speed limits can reduce the likelihood of accidents, especially when driving in unfamiliar areas, or during times of low visibility. Also, obeying road signs and signals promptly can minimize your chances of getting a traffic ticket.

Keeping up with unique details while driving can also increase your safety on the road. For example, adapting your driving speed according to weather conditions and avoiding heavy traffic zones is critical during rush hour periods.

Practicing defensive driving helps you remain vigilant when behind the wheel. Maintaining adequate space between other vehicles and focusing on the road enables you to react promptly in case of unexpected obstacles.

To wrap up, being a safe driver requires attention, patience and caution when operating a vehicle. Follow these guidelines and be sure to remember that adhering to traffic regulations is ideal for your safety – not only for yourself but for everyone around you too!

Don’t let the weather rain on your parade – make sure your car is prepared for any storm.

Be Prepared for Weather Changes

Being equipped for changing weather conditions is crucial to safe driving. The unpredictability of the climate can cause hazardous situations. It’s important to be ready with appropriate gear and an action plan.

Pay attention to weather forecasts, especially if you plan on embarking on a long trip. Ensure that your vehicle is prepared for the season; proper tire pressure, windshield wipers, and defoggers are necessary features to have. Moreover, carry an emergency kit in case you’re stuck in adverse conditions.

However, the safety precautions don’t stop at just being equipped for wet or slippery roads. Be mindful of animals crossing roads during certain times of the day. Bright sunlight, snow reflection and foggy treatments can all hinder visibility which results in accidents.

One winter afternoon as I was driving along the highway, a sudden snowstorm hit making it extremely hard to see out the front window. Although I had my headlights on full blast, they were almost completely drowned out by heavy snowfall accumulating over them until the point where it was impossible to see any further causing me to pull over; this experience taught me to respect nature’s changing moods when driving on the roadways.

Take a pit stop for sightseeing, not for texting – unless you want your final destination to be the hospital.

Additionally, always prepare some local currency as not all establishments may accept foreign cards. Having cash on hand can help avoid unnecessary panic during emergencies.

Breaking the law across borders? Just remember, ignorance may be bliss, but it won’t get you out of a hefty fine.

Additionally, it’s important to note any specific requirements or procedures inherent to certain countries. For instance, some nations require travelers to fill out health declaration forms when entering their territories.

Keeping up-to-date with country-specific legislation is highly recommended as laws are constantly changing across different regions. By doing so, you can prevent potential legal issues from arising.

One should remain vigilant by researching and staying informed about the current status of visa regulations, customs laws, and other travel-related rules in each country they plan to visit. This practice will enable them to plan a trouble-free journey without risking breaches of local laws, hefty fines, or even imprisonment.

By taking such precautions while crossing international borders, you’ll be able to enjoy your travels passionately without having to worry about any unfortunate incidents or surprises stemming from inadequate preparation or lack of awareness.

Don’t risk being caught unawares while traveling abroad; familiarize yourself fully with every national regulation and other essential immigration guidelines before leaving home!

Quick Shuttle Seattle Vancouver recent customer reviews

The driver waited a few minutes for me at Seattle airport since I had a reserved ticket that helped me make the shuttle at the last minute. He also made a good suggestion to use the Canada Line from Richmond because of a traffic snarl-up in Vancouver. Really excellent service from your driver.

Very punctual. The driver was calm, drove well/safely, and explained the destination clearly. He didn’t turn on any loud music which gave time for the passengers to rest.

Driver was a great help and came to find us as he couldn't get the bus close to the actual pick up point in Seattle.

FlixBus

According to customer reviews, the bus drivers are praised for being helpful and friendly. The buses are clean and generally on time. However, there have been complaints about delays, lack of working WiFi and power outlets, as well as confusion regarding the bus stop location.

FlixBus Seattle Vancouver recent customer reviews

I did not enjoy at all. In the WU stop, the female drive stopped there more than 15 minutes, in Bellingham stop, she stopped the bus again another 15 minutes for nothing. We arrived Vancouver stop almost 12am.

Super nice. Especially when coming back to Seattle, the driver was really making us enjoy the travel

The Good: The driver was awesome. The not so good: - The journey took more time that it should because of the the 3 stops in between. - Wifi and power outlets were not working.

Greyhound

According to multiple reviews, the service is decent with nice drivers. However, customers have mentioned that timing needs to be more strict. Some passengers experienced delays and overheating issues on the bus, as well as concerns about safety in certain areas. Additionally, there were complaints about false advertising regarding WiFi availability and leg room. Despite these negative aspects, live information provided by the company was appreciated by customers.

They delayed the bus, I had to find another one and wait around and kill time in a cafe

bus overheated twice. delayed at border for passengers with drugs. Driver was funny. Passengers were sketchy

Terrible, Greyhound was no help, the bus was canceled and we had to figure out other options ourselves

We traveled from Canada to Seattle by ferry with a car for $150. After 5 ½ hours, I wished I'd just left my vehicle at home.

  • I travel between Canada and the US often, and I recently took a route that used a car ferry.
  • With two passengers and a car, the trip cost about $150, and it took about five and a half hours.
  • I don't necessarily think having your car adds to the trip, so I'd take a passenger boat next time.

Insider Today

Nearly 400,000 people travel between Canada and the US daily, and one of the best parts of living in Victoria, British Columbia, is its relative proximity to the state of Washington.

It's common for locals to spend a weekend in Seattle to catch a sports game, see a concert, or do some cross-border shopping.

But even though the cities are pretty close, getting there can be a headache if you don't know what you're doing. Victoria, BC , is located on an island, so unless you're flying, you'll need to take a boat.

Under ideal conditions, traveling there with your car takes at least four to five hours. But when you factor in ferry times, potential delays due to weather, border wait times , traffic, and stopping for gas, it can easily become an eight-hour journey.

Recently, a friend and I took the car ferry between Victoria to Vancouver to get to Seattle. Here's how it went, and what you need to know before booking a trip.

There are several options for getting to mainland Washington from Victoria, BC.

seattle to vancouver travel time

The Victoria Clipper offers the fastest direct route between Victoria and Seattle, but it's a passenger-only ferry.

If you want to take your vehicle, you'll either need to take the Blackball "Coho" Ferry to Port Angeles, Washington, or BC Ferries to Vancouver and drive two to three hours to Seattle.

We wanted to stop at Seattle Premium Outlets in Tulalip, Washington (about an hour outside of Seattle). And since we'd be stateside, we'd have the opportunity to stop at Trader Joe's to stock up on our favorite American snacks.

Having a car would make both pit stops easier, so we decided to book tickets on BC Ferries.

Tickets vary depending on your vehicle, the number of passengers, and their ages. Vehicles under 20 feet cost 67.40 Canadian dollars, or about $49, each way. But that cost doesn't include the driver or any other passengers.

Adult fares are 19.10 CAD each way, so our total for one way on the ferry was 105.6 CAD.

If you’re traveling on a weekend, make a reservation and get there early.

seattle to vancouver travel time

Since we were taking our car, we needed to factor in the driving time to the ferry dock in Swartz Bay, located about 30 to 45 minutes outside of Victoria.

BC Ferries serves travelers from all around Vancouver Island and the lower mainland of British Columbia. Weekends are typically busy, and popular sailings can sell out.

Traffic is also busier on the weekends , so give yourself plenty of time and arrive at least 30 minutes in advance.

I recommend booking a reservation online to guarantee your spot on a specific sailing. Reservations cost an extra 20 CAD, but I think it's well worth it.

Even if you have a ferry reservation, know that there's a chance your ferry can get canceled or delayed due to weather conditions — forcing you to take the next sailing in one or two hours.

There are gorgeous views throughout the ride, which made up for the lack of Wi-Fi.

seattle to vancouver travel time

One of the things I love about taking the 90-minute boat from Victoria to Vancouver is the incredible scenery and ocean views . If the weather is decent, I recommend sitting outside.

There are picturesque islands covered in lush forests, and you may even spot a pod of whales or dolphins if you're lucky.

But if you plan on catching up on your favorite shows, download content before the ferry departs. There were no Wi-Fi options on board.

Since mobile reception is also spotty, I used the trip to catch up on work using offline apps and take in the scenery.

There’s a restaurant on the ferry, and it's actually decent.

seattle to vancouver travel time

The onboard cafeteria offers everything from coffee and desserts to local specialties, like Nanaimo bars (a classic BC layered treat) and White Spot burgers.

Surprisingly, I don't mind the ferry food, even though it tends to be pretty expensive. If you're not sure what to get, skip the prepackaged salads and get the poutine.

At about 7 to 8 CAD, it's one of the cheapest things on the menu, and it's tasty and filling.

But if you don't want to deal with lines or crowds, you should bring your own meals.

There's pretty much always a line at the cafeteria — on my last trip, I waited 30 minutes to order a burger and a Diet Coke. The dining area is also jam-packed with fellow travelers and has the vibe of a crowded mall food court at sea.

The arrival process is pretty straightforward.

seattle to vancouver travel time

The crew makes an announcement asking passengers to return to their cars 15 minutes before docking. That's when I usually sneak in a last-minute trip to the restroom before heading down to the car deck.

We spent about 10 minutes in the car waiting for the boat to dock before driving off.

We made our way to the Peace Arch Border Crossing.

seattle to vancouver travel time

The ship docks in Tsawwassen, a small town outside of Vancouver, and it's about a 40-minute drive to the Canada-US border.

This drive always gives me anxiety because you can't predict how long the wait will be.

We were lucky and only had to wait about 20 minutes on this trip. But hours-long queues at the border are common, especially if there's a special event happening in Seattle like a Taylor Swift concert or a Mariner's game.

If possible, avoid driving into Seattle during rush hour.

seattle to vancouver travel time

Traffic jams are also common on what should be a two-and-a-half-hour drive from the border crossing to Seattle, especially as you get closer to the city.

There have been previous trips where it's taken me four hours because I got stuck in a gridlock, so I always do my best to avoid getting there anywhere near rush hour.

We opted to stay overnight in Seattle.

seattle to vancouver travel time

It's technically possible to go to Seattle for the day via the car ferry, but you'd only have a few hours in the city before turning around and catching the last ferry home at 10 p.m.

I recommend booking a one-night stay at The Edgewater — an iconic Seattle hotel with a storied history of hosting legendary musicians like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Pearl Jam.

My room cost 329 CAD, and we loved the incredible waterside views, the central location, and the easy car access.

I kind of wish I didn't have my car in Seattle.

seattle to vancouver travel time

Since we stayed in downtown Seattle, we were within walking distance of Pike Place Market , the Nordstrom flagship store, and buzzy dining options in Belltown.

We also spent an afternoon exploring the trendy Capitol Hill neighborhood, located a 10-minute drive from downtown. But we ended up taking an Uber because we knew it'd be easier than finding our own parking on the weekend.

The city has a public transit system that includes a light rail, a monorail, and streetcars, so it's pretty easy to get around without a car.

When I compare the time and money spent, I wish I’d left the car at home.

seattle to vancouver travel time

In addition to the roundtrip ferry fare (with corresponding fees and taxes), my friend and I spent about 82 CAD on gas, bringing our total transport costs for the weekend trip to 323 CAD, not including the hotel stay .

I've taken the Victoria Clipper passenger ferry to Seattle for past trips, and although it's more expensive (344 CAD per adult, roundtrip), I found it to be a much more relaxing experience.

Our car-ferry journey took about five and a half hours, start to finish. But on the passenger ferry, I've boarded the boat at 5 p.m. and made it to my Seattle hotel by 8:15 p.m.

As a single woman who'd rather spend her weekend exploring one of her favorite cities than sitting in traffic, the passenger ferry is my preferred mode of transportation.

With that said, the car ferry has its advantages.

If you're traveling as a family or group, it's considerably cheaper than the passenger ferry. A roundtrip for a family of four on BC Ferries costs around 231 CAD, whereas the same trip on the Victoria Clipper would be around 866 CAD.

Additionally, if you plan on doing a lot of shopping or any outdoor activities outside of Seattle, it usually makes sense to have a car.
