Himalayan Experience Logo

Providing Life-Changing Climbing & Trekking Experiences

The himex experience, himalayan experience is an exclusive travel platform, offering expedition, trekking and vip guiding..

Himalayan Experience offers world renowned guided mountaineering and trekking expeditions to Everest, Manaslu, Lobuche and Lhotse. It is one of the longest established expedition organisers in the Himalaya, with an enviable reputation for summit success and an unrivalled client safety record.

Established in 1996 by Russell Brice, an experienced mountaineer and expedition leader who has guided in the Himalaya since 1974, Himalayan Experience provides superior and unmatched expedition leadership, logistics and support for its clients.

Since inception Himalayan Experience has strived to help hundreds of clients to achieve their expedition ambitions, and is proud to have the highest success rates of any commercial climbing expedition in the Himalaya.

Himalayan Experience expeditions stand out from those of our competitors due to the strength of leadership and support provided. An expedition leader, fully qualified guides and experienced English speaking Sherpas advise clients throughout, and our own dedicated medic and a fully equipped medical tent attends to all health concerns. We are also pleased to offer the best kitchen and living facilities on the mountain.

Testimonials

“Russell knows so much about everything… I trust him and his expeditions. It’s not just good from the outside appearance, but it’s a complete operation. That is really important. I’ve been with lots of organisations in the past doing the seven summits, but I go with what I trust and what I know. I would never go back to the Himalaya with any organisation other than Himalayan Experience. I also know that the other operations respect Russell and his company hugely – and that says a lot in itself.”

This is your opportunity to be one of the few people ever to walk the full length of Nepal's Great Himalaya Trail in one continuous trek. The 150 day trek commences in the far east in the Kanchenjunga region where the world's third highest peak stretches skyward, and traverses the country to the high plateaus on the Tibetan borderlands in the far west. Along this 1700km trail you'll encounter some of the wildest and most remote mountain environments imaginable. You'll see all of Nepal's 8000 metre peaks, cross tens of passes ranging from moderate to challenging and witness villages where the culture has remained intact for centuries. It's a trek that should only be considered by those with extensive trekking and mountaineering experience, a high level of fitness and a flexible approach as there will be the need to adapt to a range of situations throughout the trek. We are sure the challenges of this full length GHT trek will be countered with immense satisfaction and a truly unforgettable lifelong memory.

During this trek there will be sections where the trail is very rugged or ill-defined. Space in some camp sites will also be very limited. It may be necessary to make changes to the itinerary at any time due to unforeseen circumstances such as adverse weather, snow or trail conditions, river water levels, or group movement. Your trip leader will advise any changes should this occur. All participants on the GHT should be flexible and open minded. The GHT should be seen as exploratory in the true sense of the word.

MAJOR DESTINATION

Nepal is wedged in between two rapidly emerging Nations- China and India. Nepal has a great geographical variation ranging from world’s deepest Kali Gandaki Gorge to World’s highest Everest Mountain.

Cloaked in the eastern Himalayas, Bhutan is a small Himalayan nation that is wedged in between India and Tibet. Bhutan is thinly populated nation which holds its significance in being the last surviving Mahayana Buddhist nation.

The mystical land of Tibet beyond snow-clad mountains has fascinated many travelers from across the world. Tibet is the Chinese autonomy which is regarded as the roof of the world.

Land of India is stretched from sea to the Himalaya. Different culture, religion and ethnic people can be found in different parts of India. The nation has undergone rapid development since the Independence from British Rule in 1947.

My trip to Tibet and my trek in Nepal last year were a complete success, and this year your Mustang trek was fantastic!·you must be congratulated on running a first class enterprise. Great staff·they worked so hard to make our trip successful and I was very impressed with my guide.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’ve been on treks all over the world with different companies, and this is my 11th trek in Nepal, and the C. H. E. organization and staff are by far the best I’ve ever come across!

Trip Itinerary

Arrival day in kathmandu (1,300m/4,265 ft).

Welcome to the Himalayan country of Nepal. Upon your arrival at the Tribhuvan international airport, our representative welcomes and assists you with transfer to your Kathmandu Hotel.  After time in getting refreshed, we will introduce you to your guide while at the same time provide a trip briefing.  That evening we welcome you to dinner in a typical Nepalese restaurant in the heart of Kathmandu.

Kathmandu valley sightseeing & trek preparation (1,300m/4,264 ft)

After breakfast, your guided Kathmandu Valley trip will start at the Hindu temple of Pashupatinath.  Next visit is Nepal’s biggest stupa ‘Bouddhanath ‘ followed by a visit to Swoyambhunath Stupa (also known as the monkey temple). After exploring the surrounding areas, we visit the historical Kathmandu Durbar Square temples with its various unique architectures and hopefully a glimpse of Kumari (the Nepalese living goddess).

Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (1,420m/4,658ft), 7-8 hrs. drive

After breakfast we drive on a highway headed North.  It will often twist and turn and climb over mountain ridges until we get to the Trishuil valley.  The journey, through picturesque landscapes, mountain scenery and local villages, will take about 7-8 hours.  On the way we have magnificent views of the Ganesh Himals, Manaslu and Mt Kerung in Tibet. Overnight we relax at a local teahouse in Syabrubesi.

Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel (2340m/7,675ft), 5-6 hrs walk

We start our walk by ascending for around 2 hours through lush green forests followed by a further 1 hour climb to reach Bamboo village (1,850m/6,068ft).  Here we stop for hot lunch. The forested path we are taking is well maintained following the entire way by a river of rapids.  A wide range of birds can be found here as well as monkeys and on the opposite sides of the river, bee hives hanging on the cliff face.  From here we again climb steeply through bamboo forest to reach the Lama Hotel for our overnight stay.

Lama Hotel to Langtang village (3,480m/11,415ft), 5-6 hrs walk

Following the river and trail through rhododendron and pine forests, we reach Ghora Tabela. It takes us about three hours and so we make this our lunch stop. The surrounding area is still dense with wild habitat with many small babblers and herbs to be found. After lunch we walk another three hours on a scenic trail which takes us to Langtang village where we stop for the evening.

Langtang village to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m/12,697ft), 3-4 hrs walk

Today is a relatively short day with some relaxation planned in the afternoon.  We leave Langtang Village after breakfast and start our leisurely hike for around three to four hours until we reach our stop of Kyanjin Gompa where we will spend the night.  There are beautiful views to been seen here of Mt Ganchempo and Langtang Lirung.  The afternoon gives you time to explore the surrounding area which includes a monastery, local houses, and not to miss a visit at the local Yak cheese Factory.

Rest day at Kyanjin Gompa

Today you have the opportunity for a full day of rest and relaxation, to enjoy the views while exploring the local area, to walk around and just take photographs, to play cards with the guide and porters or if you have the stamina and strength, to either climb Cherku-ri at (5,150 meters), the Glacier walk or to Langshisha kharka.

Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel (2340m/7,675ft), 6-7 hrs walk

This morning we retrace our steps somewhat as we head back down the mountain. We have an easy and pleasant downhill walk through Rhododendron forests until reaching the Lama Hotel where we rest for the night.

Lama Hotel to Thulo Syabru Village (1,900m/6,232ft), 5-6 hrs walk

Today our trail leads downhill again through bamboo & Rhododendron forests where with any luck we may see some wildlife such as the local wild boar as well as other mammal and bird species. After lunch we start our climb upwards until we reach Thulo Syabru.  The journey takes a few hours but you are rewarded with some marvellous close-up views of the Ganesh Himal along the way.

Thulo Syabru to Sing Gompa (3330m/10,922ft), 4-5 hrs walk

Today we walk around 4-5 hours mostly uphill through dense forest of pine and Rhododendrons. Before reaching Sing Gompa (Chandan Bari) our overnight spot, there are some open area’s providing excellent views when looking back the way we have come.  And should you have enjoyed the Yak cheese on Day 6 at Kyanjin Gompa , then you have the opportunity again at Sing Gompa’s cheese factory.

Sing Gompa to Gosainkunda Lake (4380m/14,366ft), 4-5 hrs walk

A wonderful trail is used today passing through Cholagpati to reach your lunch break at Laurebina.  They make Cinnamon rolls here should you want to sweeten up your diet.  This area is the homeland of the Tamangs and Bhotias and even a short time spent here provides an insight into their rural mountain lifestyles and the cultural contrasts between Hindu and Buddhist villages.  Pressing on up the mountain you reach a pass where a small Gompa is located and an ideal stop for a break to look at the splendid mountain scenery behind you.  You start walking beside the mountain and to your right hand side are fantastic views of waterfalls, the Trisuli valley and the dozens of holy lakes that you have come to see.  Arriving in Gosainkund we are greeted once again by another lake even bigger than the previous ones.  Dropping your stuff at our nights stay will give you enough time to explore Gosainkunda lake and the surrounding area.

Gosainkunda Lake to Gopte (3430m/11,253ft), 6-7 hrs walk

An early start is important today as Laurebina pass can sometimes get windy.  We ascend 300 meters taking about one hour traversing around the lakes until we reach a plateau.  A little further and you’re greeted with a Buddhist Caine surrounded by dozens of prayer flags.  If you look back from where you came you will be rewarded with magnificent views of the Ganesh Himals, of Manaslu and even of the Annapurna’s. The walk now heads steeply downhill until reaching your lunch spot at Phedi.   The trail from here gets a little rugged as it ascends and descends a number of times but after around 3 hours, you reach Gopte where you sleep the night.

Gopte to Melamchigaon (2550m/8,366ft), 5-6 hrs walk

The day starts through lush forests only to be replaced at times with ravines, screes and boulders of old moraines.  After about 2 hours and a short climb, you reach the village of Tharepati which sits on a pass.   We have and early lunch here before descending steeply down to the Sherpa village of Melamchi gaon.  It’s very picturesque here and you are sure to have chats here with their warm and welcoming villagers.

Melamchigaon to Timbu (1350m/4,429ft), 5-6 hrs walk

Today there is little opportunity to sit for lunch and so we have a late breakfast /  lunch and pack some things to eat along the way.  As you descend the mountain you see the Melamchi Khola River below you.  Before getting there, we take a short cut that follows the river for about 1km before finally getting to a suspension bridge that we use to cross.  Now on the other side, we again follow the river often passing small villages unaccustomed to tourism and on the opposite banks of the river, a number of flowing waterfalls. By early afternoon we arrive in Timbu where we stay for the night.  It’s an early night sleep tonight to ensure we catch the early bus to Kathmandu.

Drive back to Kathmandu.

Today, you drive back to Kathmandu using the early morning bus that departs at 6am.  It’s a local bus and for a short section of the road is unpleasantly bumpy.  You get views of the Helambu Valley along the way and will notice prices notably cheaper and living standards a little poorer. Not many tourists travel though this region, you may be the only ones.   The bus journey takes 6-7 hours to get to Kathmandu and upon arrival you will need to take a taxi the final distance back to the hotel.

Departure from Kathmandu

Today is usually a day spent for last minute souvenir and gift shopping.   A representative is also interested in meeting one last time to understand how your trek went, if there were any problems along the way and or whether we are in any way able to provide you further service or assistance.   That may be with onward transport arrangements, travelling information and or maybe further interest in joining one of our other treks or tours available to you.

150-Day Trek Anyone? World Expeditions Caters To Seasoned Adventurers

T he travel industry’s approach to global expeditions has evolved since World Expeditions began nearly 50 years ago. To stick around that long, the company has stayed at the forefront of travel organizers with its curation of epic adventures for mountaineers and explorers.

Look around for expedition travel packages and you’ll notice many of the same destinations pop up. Conversely, Word Expeditions prides itself on its lesser-known treks in more remote locales and its ability to conduct them sustainably.

The company offers a variety of trips that include cycling, polar cruises, and even wildlife safaris. However, here we’ll focus on the company’s bigger treks and mountaineering expeditions.

These more physically demanding journeys require mountaineering experience and can take 30 days to complete – or 150 days if you’re up for its grandest adventure.

Treks and Expeditions

Since its first expedition-style trip to the Himalayas nearly 50 years ago, World Expeditions has kept mountain adventures at its core. It now offers a months-long trip across the Great Himalaya Trail, which we cover in more detail below.

The adventure company’s biggest treks include iconic ascents like Aconcagua and Mont Blanc, while others take you to less-traveled peaks like the Mountains of the Moon in Uganda. Want to spend 16 days tackling climbing trips in Bolivia ? There’s a package for that, too.

Some trips are mostly trekking with limited mountaineering, which makes them a great opportunity to gain more experience and confidence with those skills. If you need to brush up on or learn new mountain skills , they have weeklong courses with certified instructors and small class sizes.

Of course, premier destinations are only part of the equation when booking a holiday adventure. It’s important to know the philosophy of your expedition guides.

Holistic Adventure Philosophy

World Expeditions operates with the philosophy that ‘active outdoor’ travel, regardless of grading level, is a more authentic way to experience a destination.

The company wants guests to feel challenged, regardless of their age and experience, and “experience the joy of personal transformation through travel” as its core values state.

Through outdoor treks, guests can connect with themselves and others achieving physical goals while also taking in the beauty and the diverse cultures around the world.

World Expeditions also believes that local guides can offer the best experiences. Thus, they invest in training and developing local leaders . These leaders may work with Western guides to provide both well-run explorations and authentic cultural exchange.

Trip itineraries also emphasize small groups for a more personalized experience as well as to reduce the impact on the environments and communities you travel through.

An Ethical Approach

Over the years, World Expeditions has adapted its business practices to reduce the impact of its guests and work harmoniously with surrounding communities.

Part of its sustainable approach means protecting the environment alongside its travel routes. These treks and expeditions aim to reduce waste and eliminate single-use plastics, appreciate wildlife from a distance, and even offer carbon offsetting for guests.

And yet the impact on local communities is another factor in the company’s take on sustainability. Sometimes it means assisting with fundraising for local campaigns and raising awareness of its cultures.

One such example is the regenerative project underway in Purros, a village in northwestern Namibia that’s been stricken by drought. There, food scarcity is a very real challenge, especially among school children who often eat just one meal a day – a bowl of maize.

The village’s remote location makes transportation to acquire other foods cost-prohibitive, so the foundation seeks to build a closed tunnel garden overseen by a manager but attended to by the children as well. The variety of vegetables could improve nutrition as well as bring in income by selling excess vegetables to tourism venues.

Standout Trips

We’ve told you that World Expeditions prides itself on unique, remote explorations and treks. Now let’s dive into prime examples of its immersive, adventure travel packages.

The Holy Grail of Trekking

Imagine: You’ve just arrived at base camp and are slowly acclimating to the altitude. You’ve never felt more alive. These are the moments that the guides (and clients) at World Expeditions live for.

That’s but a taste of what you can expect on World Expeditions’ crown jewel itinerary: the exclusive Nepal traverse of the Great Himalaya Trail . The trail spans 1,000 miles (1,700km) and takes 150 days to finish.

The company first offered this trip in 2011, but the list of those who have completed it in one trip is small. It’s a big time commitment, yet offers so much more than checking off another mountain peak.

The full traverse starts in the far east, looking up at the world’s third highest peak, and climbs to the high plateaus on the Tibetan borderlands in the far west. The trail includes some of the most remote mountain terrain (and wildlife) on earth. Along the way, trekkers can see all eight of Nepal’s highest peaks (8000 meters+) and pass by centuries-old villages steeped in unique cultures.

The full traverse can be completed as a whole but the company also broke this down into seven different segments available as separate treks. Each segment offers the experience of big Himalayan vistas, big mountain passes, and remote valleys with rarely-visited villages.

In other words, each offers a mix of physical challenges that can develop a deep sense of personal achievement and camaraderie among guests with unique cultural exchanges.

Alpine Uganda

Conversely, picture ascending out of a lush jungle to an exposed, barren alpine in the heart of Africa. That’s the gist of World Expeditions’ trek through the Rwenzori Mountains, or Mountains of the Moon — one of the shorter and more accessible expeditions.

Your trip starts and ends with hotel stays, with 10 days spent trekking through the contrasting landscapes of tropical rainforests, Giant Lobelia forests, and expansive glaciers. Once underway, guests will spend their nights in fully supported, permanent camps with meals provided and accompanied by local guides.

Much of the trek goes through Rwenzori Mountain National Park, home to diverse flora, endangered species, and a source of the River Nile. The park is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The approach through valleys with flora like giant heather and bright ferns may fool you into forgetting the trip’s big ascent on Margherita Peak (5,109 meters), Africa’s third-highest mountain. To summit requires roping up and crampons, but it’s described as more of a hard scramble than a true climb.

Additionally, this equatorial destination is open to adventure nearly year-round. If you’re looking for a challenging and enriching experience outdoors in the winter months, this could make for an unforgettable “winter break” trip.

Uniquely Epic

The combination of grand, unique destinations and World Expeditions’ implementation of its core values through “ thoughtful travel ” set it apart from other adventure tourism companies.

Whether you’re looking for a way to combine outdoor activities with tourism or checking off one of the Seven Summits, World Expeditions has trips that promise to challenge you physically and mentally enrich your life.

Amazing Manaslu Trek 1

We did the Manaslu circuit and had an awesome time. We booked it in Touch The Himalaya and a few days later we left. The experience was great. Beautiful scenery and amazing culture. Our guide Bikram and porter Suresh were fantastic. Both great to chat to, very knowledgeable and really fun. Bikram is a great flute player!

Breathtaking Hike in Manaslu Circuit

We have Breathtaking Hike in Manaslu Circuit with the help of Touch The Himalaya Treks we did a 15 day Manaslu circuit trek in November 2019. Madan, the manager assisted us in adjusting the itinerary to our wishes. This way we walked the first three days of the trek on an alternative route to the standard trek. We were warmly welcomed in the home stays and gained a good insight into the everyday life of the locals. Our guide Kedar did a great job during the whole journey.

We always felt we could perfectly rely on his judgement and he always was flexible to our individual needs and wishes. Also he was much fun and we felt he took very good care of us. We strongly recommend Kedar Neupane as a guide if you want to trek anywhere in the nepali Himalaya region. We had a really great time in Nepal and we’re looking forward to plan our next trip here with Madan and Kedar.

" Great family morning outing. Really enjoyed getting to know downtown Cape Town on bikes. Our guide was very informative and adapted well to having 3 teenagers in our group in terms of information content. The bikes were good quality and the route a good mix of roads, gardens, cycle paths etc. Would recommend. "

A Trip of a Lifetime Experience!

Just want to share my experience with all & was WOW''

If you want a trip of a lifetime this is the trip surely for you! This trip starts in Kathmandu where you will spend your first night in the city exploring everything Kathmandu has to offer. Same this trip people doing minimum 12 days trek but of course this is helicopter fly and was only few hours,  at morning our flight 2 hours Daley because of not 100% cleared weather but when we left from Kathmandu weather being amazing,

This trip I think not only for Himalayan View & Mt. Everest' I seen so beautiful valley of Kathmandu, river view, green jungle view, high Himalayan villages, supper exciting helicopter tour with Himalayan Scenery treks,

Peoples' if you have time & money do not miss this amazing trip, you will be in good hands of HST team, very highly recommended.

TripAdvisor

My best flight to Everest region!

We did the best Everest helicopter landing tour with HST. This was really one of my first trips in the high Himalaya, I did with my child this Helicopter tour,  I was nervous about taking a helicopter tour to the Everest base camp with child, but the organizer HST team' helicopter staff and pilots were incredibly reassuring and put us at ease. The flight itself was incredibly smooth. Really amazing to land in Lukla – Phiriche – Kalapatthar & Everest view hotel, the scenes from the aerial view were marvelous, and the mountains looked like a work of art. It was inspiring to see the mountains up close and to experience the thrill of being so close to the world’s peak. This tour would be favor for who has short time in Kathmandu, This tour is a must-do for anyone traveling to Nepal, The real lifetime experience with reasonable cost with HST trek.

10/10 for Everest Base Camp trip guys!

In April 2019, our party of 12 from the UK were led on the trip of a lifetime for 12 days by Gokul and Narayan of Himalayan Scenery Treks and Expedition. I can't praise these amazing people enough for the adventure they took us on. I literally can't think of anything they could have done any better than they did for us. Every day they ensured we were all safe and together, and ensured we reached every point of our destination on time. They ensured we made the most of every moment and view, and experienced it to the maximum. They organised and ordered breakfast, lunch and dinner for us every. The checked our oxygen levels every day and made wise suggestions to ensure everyone's health was maintained. In addition to Gokul and Narayan, I must also thank the lovely team of porters that were employed by the trekking company. These guys carried our overnight bags up and down the mountain with a smile and made our trek so much easier because all we had to carry was a small backpack. Thanks again guys, we will recommend you without hesitation to anyone else looking for an Everest Base Camp Trek - or any Nepalese trek for that matter - they do many others too!

Not a holiday but a challenge!!!

Trekked to EBC. One of the hardest things I have ever done but also one of the most memorable. From start to finish the trip was amazing and well organised. Our guide was Narayan and I don't think we could have been given a better guide. He is knowledgeable and attentive. He cared about our wellbeing and regularly checked in with us to make sure we were acclimatising. He checked our oxygen every evening. He had the patience of a saint as I moaned constantly about everything from the cold, the food, the climb and feeling ill. On part of our trek he played some 80s music on his phone which boosted our morale during a 7 hour slog.  We were a group of 5 and we all got on splendidly and helped each other get to EBC.  For me the trek was a once in a lifetime adventure. Narayan and his counterpart Gopal made it so. I would very highly recommend them as guides!

Incredible Experience

Last January, I had a wonderful trekking experience in Nepal which became possible only via Himalayan Scenery Treks and Expedition. Everyone from this company is really helpful and friendly. In fact, what they care is just the comfortability and amusement of their tourists. They provide all the necessary stuff that a Trekker or a visitor would seek in order to make his/her vacation hilarious. I really enjoyed the service they provide. On top of that, they provide info and every minor details about the place that I traveled. In short, my tour went really memorable last New Year. I would recommend all the travelers to consult with this company if they are planning to visit Nepal and spend vacation there. Lastly, Nepal is really a beautiful country with mountains, lake forests and parks. I think everyone should make it a travel destination and learn about the diversity of this country.

Every time Dima goes on a photo trip to shoot mountains, our entire team impatiently awaits for the news from the front lines. That's right, from the front lines, because Dima traditionally finds all sorts of adventures in the mountains. It may be a suddenly malfunctioning camera, or unexpected weather changes. Or a volcano, just recently shooting a 20km-tall column of ashes, would suddenly go to sleep... Dima's personal view on such events is rather philosophical: he believes that one's entire life is governed by karma , the law of cause and effect. In order to get a deeper understanding of this mysterious phenomenon, he joined a yoga tour to India and Nepal. Obviously, when Dima suddenly called and told us that he was going to shoot Mount Everest in a couple of hours, all of us — to the best of everyone's individual skills — sent positive vibrations his way in hope to change his karma. Alas, our skills had their limits. At the end of the day we got another phone call: Dima happily informed us that he had a fantastic flight, and that there were so many beautiful mountains around. He even saw Mount Everest and tried to shoot it, but... he had to go back due to the hard crosswind that stopped their helicopter few kilometers before Everest. After that, one by one, two of his three cameras broke down. Our colleague Ivan Roslyakov dragged us out of our depression by saying: "The tour needs a spherical panorama of Mount Everest? No problem! About six months ago I went on a trekking expedition to Nepal. We took the same route, as Dima's helicopter did. We even managed to get a bit higher than Dima, so I photographed Mount Everest". The idea of combining aerial shots from the helicopter and ground photography seemed very good. Let's take a moment and listen to Dmitriy Moiseyenko's exciting story of his flight to Mount Everest before viewing our new virtual tour.

The trip to Mount Everest

It was my fifth trip from India to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Tired of walking the streets, I decided to stop at one of the restaurants with a fabulous view of Boudhanath stupa for a cup of tea with honey.

Boudhanath stupa

Boudhanath stupa in Kathmandu

Here I was, sitting by the window, when suddenly my tranquility was interrupted by a couple of helicopters cutting through the evening sky... My mind immediately concentrated: if there were helicopters, there was so much to do! That same evening I visited a travel agency, where they told me, "Yes, helicopters were available. But, no, flights over Kathmandu were prohibited. However, yes, there were plenty of alternative routes" The list of alternative routs' names sent my head spinning, and my mind clung to one familiar word — Mount Everest!

Note: The border of China and Nepal goes right through the peak of the highest mountain in the world (8 848 meters). Or, the border of Tibet and Nepal. The definition entirely depends on reader's political views. Mt. Everest is a part of the Himalayas, a rather narrow mountain range that separates the Indian and the Asian tectonic plates (the Tibetan Plateau) Ten out of fourteen 8K Peaks are located in the Himalayas, and the rest of them in the nearby Karakoram Range.

I must say that I have seen Mount Everest more than once. I remember my first time, looking out from a Tibetan toilet, which was built on the elevated ground, without a door, and with waist-high walls — so that the "occupant" could enjoy a magnificent view of Mt. Everest being visible to others during the process... The second time I saw it from the plane going from Kathmandu to Lhasa. The third time was from the Tibetan side again, but much closer, from the base camp on 5300m altitude. Recalling this wall of snow, rising over the "not so low" Tibetan plateau, I tried to imagine how would The Mountain look from the Nepalese side...

Note: It is known that 90% of Mount Everest ascensions begin in Tibet, and only 10% in Nepal. The ratio of climbers who make it to the base camp is just about the same. The base camp hosts all expeditions. This is where climbers go through altitude acclimatization, prepare their gear, and test their equipment before the summit...

I sent out requests to three helicopter companies, and only one replied on the next day: we can fly to Everest!

The helicopter could get up to 20 000 feet (about 6 300 meters), the wind was acceptable — 50 km/h, the temperature at the highest altitude was -35C degrees. Well, it was winter after all. January of 2012...

Since I always shoot through the open door, it was time for some shopping. After an hour of bargaining at the local shop, the entire set of gear: North Face two-layered fleece jacket, North Face down parka, K2 gloves, High Tech boots and a Nepalese knitted hat — was purchased for just 94 USD.

It is -35C outside, and the door must remain open

It is -35C outside, and the door must remain open

Next morning I learned something very interesting in the office of the helicopter company: there was a weather station in the base camp area, but it's been silent for a month. They expected it to be fixed in the summer. Weather updates could be received over the phone from the nearest village. Or from Google. So far the day was clear, not a single cloud. However, yesterday, all flights were canceled due to the strong wind.

A map was spread over the table. "Well, — said the Nepalese, — where do you want to go?" "Oh, no! This is my first time here, so please take me to where I can have the best view on Mount Everest, flying next to the face of the mountain". They said, "Well, it could be complicated, since there is a couple of 7K peaks right in front of it, but don't worry, you'll get the best Everest view. Now, let's hurry up, before the wind gets stronger." Then the pilot spoke up, "I'm not flying with this madman alone. He wants to open the door! What if the wind blows harder, and the helicopter gets knocked off? Or what if we loose all oxygen, and I faint, and he falls out? That's it, I need an assistant. And several oxygen masks!"

Oxygen tanks

Oxygen tanks

Finally, we were in the airport. A perfect morning haze covered Kathmandu village as we took off, flying over the suburbs, brick plants, smokestacks, fields, and hills... Since the greater part of Nepal lies on the foothills of the Himalaya, local people spent last couple of thousand years converting most of the hills into agricultural terraces to maintain food supply. These terraces stretch over 200 kilometers from Kathmandu to Everest.

After 40 minutes flight we stopped in Lukla, the Sherpa village. This was the last village with an airfield before the base camp. One end of its runway went right into the mountains, and the other ran over a cliff. Thank God, we had a helicopter. We dropped the fuel that we'd use on our way back, had a cigarette and took off! Our helicopter was flying between the mountains, not above them... The pilot pointed out "Everest!" From my previous trips to Tibet I leaned how to tell Mount Everest from others — there is always a little cloud at the side of its peak. Actually, it must be one of Nature's special tricks to show little humans who's the boss. It was Everest alright, but only that its peak was barely visible between other peaks. However down below we could see the monastery, the last one before the base camp, right on the mountain pass, surrounded by cliff s. Here it was, the first point! I was taking pictures, than doing a second take... Checking... Hm, the focus was off... No problem, I will shoot it again on the way back.

We kept on flying, the altitude was over 4 km, snowy plateaus and frozen lakes just started to appear in front of me... Suddenly, we went down. Why? The pilot replied, "We have to let go of two people, we are going to fly really high, we must have enough power "... I asked him, "How are you going to fly without a second pilot?" The pilot didn't answer, unloaded my friend and his co-pilot, handed me the oxygen mask and showed how to put it on. We took off and in 10 minutes we were going around a huge mountain. The pilot pointed at the glacier covered with shining blue cracks, a rather young glacier, and said "the base camp". I pointed at it "Let's go there!" We approached the turn of the ice river flowing from the highest mountain. Almost there! Little bit longer, and we would see Mount Everest in all its glory... And suddenly... It felt like someone's hit the breaks... We stopped and started slowly moving backwards. In surprise I looked at the pilot, pointing my finger, as if to say "forward!" But for some reason he looked frightened, shaking his had "no". "The wind! He said, "I can't go there, the wind is too strong". There was not a single cloud in the sky; the ice lake was shining in reflections of the sunlight... Nothing spoke of the wind, only the pilot quickly turned around the helicopter, starting to pick up speed, going into the opposite direction. "Hey!" I shouted not into the microphone, but directly into his back. "We still have to shoot"... "No way, I'm not going there," he said... And suddenly I realized the horror of the situation: I was only several kilometers away from Everest, even though its face was hidden behind a couple of other 7K Peaks, but nevertheless, its peak was visible... We were at the altitude of 6 000 meters, breathing oxygen, it took us 1.5 hours to get here, it cost a lot of money, and just because the "driver" was panicking I was supposed to go back empty-handed? No way! I counted to 10, and started praising my pilot: he was a high professional, an ace with a total control over his iron bird, I didn't even notice any wind, and "I'm sure you know how to fly even in storm"... Besides, if we would go back and fly a little higher, we wouldn't have to go that far, we could stay here, a bit closer. Something clicked in the pilot's mind, "Well, I'll try going up and closer, but just once, and not too high..."

Mount Everest view

Mount Everest view

... Well, I must say that the helicopter was indeed shaking at that altitude ;) Only the thought of disappointed colleagues (if I don't bring decent pictures of Mt. Everest) made me push the pilot, over and over again, to go back to where we could see just a glimpse of the highest mountain in the world... He complained that the wind was crazy, tried to run away, and didn't want to fly higher, hiding by the glacier. Finally I realized that we've reached the limit of his courage, and that it was no chance to get any more of Everest out of him. So I said, "Let's go back" and immediately heard a long sigh of relief.

Two cameras before the death

Two cameras will be dead soon

We quickly picked up our friends that were freezing at 4 200 meters altitude. Here was the monastery again... I remembered about my plan to shoot it on the way back. I asked the pilot to slow down. He grumbled once again, this time about the fuel. I started shooting and noticed that my camera acted very odd — no signs of life, whatsoever. First of all I changed the battery — same result. The pilot kept on grumbling in my headphones, and I almost snapped at him to shut up, but then remembered that I was on a yoga tour, and that anger was not a good thing. I took out my second camera, changed the lens right there on my lap, by the open door, attached cords and adjusted settings. The moment I started shooting, I got this funny feeling again, that something was going wrong. And indeed it was. All settings zeroed out, the screen read "0 hours 0 minutes 01.01.2001. Set up the time to begin"... This was suspicious... I grabbed my friend's camera, which he used to film our flight, changed all settings once again (the pilot was boiling with anger)... This time, the camera worked great, and we were off to Lulka airport to fuel up. A short break... On our way back I shot the terraces with my last working camera...

Terraces about kilometer high

Terraces about kilometer high

After the flight I inspected all my cameras: the first one was completely dead; settings on the second one had to be reset from scratch; and — oh, mystery — the third surviving camera was not mine! I borrowed it from my yoga instructor, who guided our group in India and Nepal. It was obvious: I had to work much more on my karma.

Just so you know, I placed a disparaging comment here concerning the photographer's cavalier attitude toward the safety of his pilot and his overall arrogance and it was promptly removed by him…so, word of warning: you must post things like, "The photographer is wonderful, and the photographs are beautiful…thank you, thank you!", otherwise they will be quickly removed to maintain the reflection of this gentleman's huge ego.

Anthony McNichol, USA

Dear Anthony, if you want to see your comments on our website, you have to learn to express your thoughts without offenses. We understand, that in your case it can be not easy. But imagine for a moment that somebody will write in our guestbook: Anthony from USA is a «a pompous, arrogant ass» (it is quote from your message). Will you like it?

Let me ascend towards the summit and see how far I can go," said Kami Rita, who reached the Base Camp via Lukla and Namche. He embarked on the expedition from Kathmandu a week ago as part of the Spring Season Everest expedition.

He is leading a mountaineering expedition team comprising about 28 climbers.

The expedition is managed by Seven Summit Treks Pvt Ltd. Mingma Sherpa, Chairperson of Seven Summit Treks, confirmed that Kami Rita has reached the Everest Base Camp for his 29th ascent on Sagarmatha through their company. According to Mingma, most of the climbers have reached the Base Camp and are awaiting the appropriate time for the climb.

Eighty mountaineers have set out to ascend Sagarmatha via the Seven Summit Treks Company alone this time. Kami Rita has been guiding the climbers and will set a new record by surpassing his own previous record if he succeeds in climbing Sagarmatha this time.

Kami Rita holds the record for the highest number of ascents on the world's tallest peak in the 71-year-long history of Sagarmatha climbing. Pasang Dawa Sherpa, also from Solukhumbu, climbed Sagarmatha for the 27th time last year, but it is not confirmed whether he will be attempting the climb this time.

"I am going to climb Sagarmatha; I have no other purpose," Kami Rita said. "I have simply continued the profession of mountain climbing; I have not climbed for a record."
