Many RV consumers have a desire to keep their more fuel-efficient vehicles, yet they still want a travel trailer that has all the amenities needed to take week-long trips. New construction materials are making RVs lighter, stronger, and more versatile. Features that exist in 30 plus foot coaches are now seen in trailers as small as 15 feet or less – small travel trailers.

The small RV category is unique unto itself. Big-name manufacturers compete with independent small companies. Many of the small companies create new technologies the big names haven’t even thought of yet. For our discussion, we will define small travel trailers by the following criteria:

• They are self-contained- this means that all features are within the coach itself. Trailers that only have outdoor kitchens fall within another category.
• The coach does not have an interior length of more than 23 feet in length. They may be a part of a series that have floorplans that exceed this length, but we will define this.
• Dry weights will not exceed 3,500 pounds. We will focus our attention on those that are the lightest in weight. Some do go as high as 4,000, but this is an effect of materials used. Some of the trailers are a part of a series that extend out of the small travel trailer parameters. We will feature those models that fall within our small trailer limits.

The 17MBS is 19.9 feet in length and has a 3,095-pound dry weight. The front has a murphy bed that shares space with a sofa. This is a feature that many manufacturers use as a space saver. As a trade-off, Jayco gives you a separate toilet and shower instead of a combined wet bath for an amenity balance.

This particular coach is an off-road model with 15 inch Goodyear mud tires and a raised chassis. They seal the underbelly with a layer of Astro-Foil to protect it and as an insulator. Despite its size, there is still plenty of space for linens, wardrobe, and pantry items within.

The 17RK is the exact length and dry weight of the 17MBS but is very different. The front of the coach has a permanent queen-size bed. It has a driver-side slide out that with a U-shaped dinette and refrigerator/microwave. The kitchen counter takes up the entire width of the rear. The tradeoff is a combination wet bath.

Casita designs their trailers based on two sizes. Their two-piece fiberglass shells come in either 16 feet or 17 feet. Each size then has a standard or deluxe package. The deluxe models offer an all-in-one toilet/shower wet bath and black water holding tank.

Standard packages use the wet bath area for added storage or sitting/sleeping space. This allows for more people to be comfortable. It also means you would have to rely on campground facilities for restrooms and showers. If your camping style is more off-grid, the deluxe package may fit your needs better.

Casita matches a floorplan with a model. This means that if you want the two- twin bed floorplan, you would choose the Independence model. Whichever model you choose, weight and pricing are the same. The manufacturer sets the price of their products.

Once completed, customers pick up their unit at Scamp’s headquarters in Backus, Minnesota. If the customer can’t get there, Scamp will go the extra mile to help their customers out. The company can deliver the RV to the customer anywhere in the continental United States.

Scamp has three sizes. The 13 and 16-foot models are small travel trailers, and the 19 is a fifth wheel . Each size has a standard and deluxe version. The 13 foot has two layouts, while the 16 foot has five. Some models have a combination toilet/shower wet baths, others do not.

Costs are unique to each trailer. Scamp does not publish their starting prices. Some owners have discussed their pricing on forums across the internet. Generally, these price points have come in between $15,000 to $20,000 depending on the model, package, and additional features they have chosen.

The dinettes in both models fold out into the bed in these coaches. In the Dawn, the measurements are 48 x 80. The Eclipse is 55 x 80. When you compare these to residential beds, you get the length of a queen.

The appeal of European design has become a new trend in the United State in recent years. This has given consumers new form and function options. In the Class B motorhome category, European-based chassis have benefits never seen before.

Eriba RV decided to take this a step further. This past year, they decided to open a North American Division here in the United States. This German company introduced its Hymer Touring GT to America. While it may be new to the U.S., this coach dates back to the late 1950s.

The first unique feature of this coach is its expandable roof. Once opened, it gives almost a 6.4 feet height within the coach.

The current layout available in the United States has a king-size bed in the rear of the coach. This is unique since it’s truly rare for small travel trailers to have a permanent bed of this size. The front of the coach has a fold-down dinette that can accommodate an additional sleeper.

The cabinetry follows European style with its rounded fronts. This gives additional inches to each storage space. The faucet folds down into the sink and has a cover that folds on top of it. The two-burner gas stove also has a cover. This allows the added counter space for meal prep.

The bathroom is full-featured. It comes with a cassette toilet that has it’s own external bay for easy draining. The shower is big enough to clean up without banging your arms against the walls.

Another unique feature is their window and door screens. For the door, there is a hidden screen that pulls out from the side. Pull-down sunscreens and privacy shades act as screens as well. When you open the windows, the hatches act as hard-shell awnings to prevent rain and other weather from coming into the coach.

The Micro is available in five-floor plans. All but the smallest (12SRK) have a bathroom.

The Jay Feather Micro includes residential-style kitchen countertops with a 3-burner cooktop. This floorplan also has a jackknife sofa and Jayco’s new patent-pending trays.

Optional packages add solar panel prep for off-grid camping and a 13,000 BTU air conditioning system.

The smallest which now seems to be dealer stock only is the 12SRK which weighs 1,585 lbs and is just over 13 feet in length.

The Jay Feather Micro is an excellent micro camper that is lightweight and does not shortchange you on comfort and features.

Forest River R-Pod

The Forest River R-Pod is another of the available small campers you should consider. It is available in 11 layout designs, the RP-203 is the heaviest with a dry weight of 5,169 lbs.

It is constructed on a powder-coated steel frame and comes equipped with a power tongue jack, self-adjusting electric brakes, and much more.

The interior has designer Carefree flooring, solid lumber core cabinet fronts, central vacuum, USB ports, LED lighting and it is solar panel prepped.

One feature we like that has been added is a dry bath in certain models as opposed to a wet bath which we don’t particularly like. It is solar-panel prepped for off-grid use and a backup camera prepped as well.

The smallest R-Pod camper in their lineup is the RP-153 with an exterior length of 17’6″ and an unloaded vehicle weight of 3,179 lbs.

Happier Camper

The Happier Camper HC1 is one of our favorite cool travel trailers. We love retro look but also appreciate its versatility.

For example, inside the all-fiberglass body, you’ll find the Adaptiv modular system. This feature easily lets you customize the interior layout of the small camper by using Adaptiv cube-shaped components. The Adaptiv components include a bench/bed, storage cubes, kitchenette, and many more. The sleeping space is suitable for 1 or 2 people only.

The HC1 is an all fiberglass travel trailer. Getting in and out of this small trailer is easy via the rear door.

As of 2023, Happier Camper offers two small camper trailer models. The HC1 is one option, and the HCT “Traveler” is the other. It has a longer footprint with more room for gear.

The HC1 was their first model. It has a 3,500 pounds GVWR rating and a length of 13′ and that includes the hitch.

Many cars and small SUVs have the towing capacity to tow either of the Happier Camper small travel trailers with bathrooms.

Best Small Fiberglass Trailer for Camping

Casita liberty deluxe.

These Casita small trailers for camping are an all-fiberglass construction bumper pull camper. They’re available in 5-floor plans with each one having a standard and deluxe model.

The fiberglass shell is a two-piece marine-grade shell. There is a top and bottom half that are sealed together with fiberglass.

What’s great about this method of construction is the roof has no seams, which makes this camper virtually waterproof, durable, and, lightweight. The interior and exterior are both super easy to clean.

The frame is constructed of heavy-duty steel which improves underbody strength and helps in protecting the travel trailer from the road and rough terrain damage.

The Casita is available in 5-floor layout designs and each one has a standard version and a deluxe version. The major difference is the deluxe has a bathroom. It’s a wet bath which means the shower and toilet are in the same compartment.

We feel the Casita Liberty Deluxe is our favorite small camper from this RV manufacturer. It has a dry weight of 2,480 lbs and a length of 17 feet.

Most Affordable Small Trailers for Camping

Sylvan sport go camper trailer.

The Sylvan Sport Go is described by its manufacturer as the “Swiss Army Knife” of small tent trailers. Not only that but National Geographic called the Go “Coolest Camper Ever”.

There are many things that make the Sylvan Go cool and one of them is the ability to use the camper as a utility trailer to haul stuff, which makes it rather unique among small campers.

When used for camping the interior is spacious and the bed is wide and long. Many buyers rave about customer service from Sylvan as well.

This is a very capable tent camper that is comfortable on the road or off-road. When it comes to storage space you won’t find much but what is available is very useful. Note that there is no air conditioner on this camper.

The towing capacity of many small SUVs is well within the range to tow this camper. The pop-up tent is easy to set up.

When it comes to small trailers, Tammy and I really like the Sylvan Go. It gives you the outdoor camping experience but is a lot more refined than just being in a tent. With the rack you can add bikes, kayak etx.

The Sylvan Sport Go is one of the smallest of the small trailers for camping that made our list. It can be towed with just about any vehicle. This cute pop-up camper has a weight of just 840 pounds and is about 80″ in length.

Scamp Travel Trailers

The popular Scamp small trailers for camping are made to order, fiberglass campers. The fiberglass shell is lightweight and very durable.

This is one of the easiest small trailers to tow with small cars, minivans, and SUVs. The round corners make it aerodynamic which in turn increases fuel efficiency.

Scamp trailers are available in 3 sizes, 13′, 16′, and 19′. Each size is available as a “Standard” or “Deluxe” model. The big difference between the two is the “Deluxe” has a bathroom. or other amenities.

The smallest travel trailer is the 13-foot length model and weighs about 2,000 pounds. Scamp does not list their camper GVWR. We suggest you research the right tow vehicle to haul the Scamp safely.

Taxa Outdoors Cricket Camper

The Taxa Outdoors Cricket small trailers for camping are both lightweight and rugged. It can be towed by vehicles with 4-cylinder engines.

The inside allows for two adults and two children to sleep comfortably.

Taxa Cricket has pop-up roofs up to provide optimized ventilation. The spacious interior has ample room for a full-bed. There is under-bed storage that converts into a dining table.

The kitchen features a large countertop, a sink, and a two-burner stove allowing you to easily prep your meal and cook.

There are 5 swing windows equipped with shades and screens and 5 mesh windows in the upper tent side that allow open views and cross ventilation from just about any angle.

Need a roof rack? No worries the Taxa has one if you need it.

With its NASA-inspired design, you’ll find the Taxa Outdoors Cricket is one very capable small camper trailer. If you plan on going off-road this camper can definitely handle that.

The Cricket is 15′ in length and has a GVWR of 2,700 lbs. Most cars can’t tow it however SUVs like the Nissan Pathfinder with a towing package can easily do so.

Safari Condo Alto

The Safari Condo Alto is one of the more unique small teardrop trailers. What makes it so different is the retractable roof system.

Essentially the roof expands upward to add interior height.  You can easily go from 83.5 inches to 101 inches when the roof is open. It’s a great classic teardrop camper-looking design.

You can almost consider it a pop-up camper since the top actually pops up to increase interior headroom and space. Deinfitlet one to consider if planning any off-road expeditions.

The roof and walls are made of a plastic honeycomb core that is laminated with aluminum on one side and Alufiber on the other side.

Alufiber combines aluminum and fiberglass to create a durable lightweight material.

One interesting thing to note about the Safari Condo Alto is that they have intentionally used materials that water has little to no effect on. This camper mainly uses aluminum, Alufiber, plastic, Formica, and glass in its construction.

When it comes to storage space it has just enough for most folks and quite a bit more than a typical teardrop camper.

With a length of 17′ and a GVWR of 2,700 lbs, you’ll find it easy to tow this small camper with a small truck or full-size SUV.

Polydrops P17 Essential

At only 13’7″ the Polydrops P17A1 Electric is one of the shortest campers on our list. It has only 4 feet of interior height but it doesn’t seem small or cramped inside. This is due to gullwing doors which make getting in and out of the P17A1 quite easy.

Perhaps the best feature though, is that this is one of the few all-electric towable campers currently on the market. Equipped with 4.8kWh LiFePO4 battery and 260W solar panel as standard.

Tammy and I were heading to Lake Texoma when we decided to stop at Treasure Valley Casino. Out front, they had this cool-looking unit from Riverside RV. We managed to peek inside and immediately fell in love.

For a small camper, it has quite a bit. This little beauty has a queen-sized bed, a dry bath (toilet and separate shower), a cooktop and sink, a refrigerator, and a sofa.

It also managed to fit in a microwave and outside shower. Storage space is limited on this camper but still very useable.

The interior has a retro wood paneling design. To maximize space it has a rear hatch or door.

The RT 135 has a dry weight of just 2,540 pounds. It has a Cargo Carrying Weight of 1,170 pounds.

Best Small Off-Road Camper

When it comes to a small camper you can tow, even with a side-by-side, the Boony Stomper leads the packs. The Boony Stomper is manufactured by Sunnyside Offroad in Reno, NV.

The camper is only 11″ in length and that includes the trailer tongue and rear bumper. At its widest point it is 68″. it weighs in at 600 lbs. and will increase depending on any options your choose.

The interior has finished walls, linoleum floors, and carpeted walls and headboard. The suspension is custom fabricated with independent trailing arms. It will give you a smooth ride even at high speeds.

Since 1972, Minnesota has produced the iconic Scamp Travel Trailer. Instead of mass production, each coach is built to the customer’s specifications. They can select the size, layout, and interior features that they want.

According to some owners, the construction took only a few weeks. The interactive aspect of the experience was what they enjoyed the most. Throughout the process, the manufacturer sent pictures and responded to questions.

Customers can pick up their finished unit at Scamp’s headquarters in Backus, Minnesota. If a customer is unable to arrive, Scamp will go above and beyond to assist them. The RV can be delivered to the customer anywhere in the continental United States.

Scamp comes in three different sizes. The 13- and 16-foot models are small travel trailers, while the 19 is a fifth wheel. Each size has a standard version and a deluxe version. The 13-footer has two layouts, while the 16-footer has five. Some models have combined toilet and shower wet baths, while others do not.

Each trailer has its own set of costs. Scamp does not publish its starting prices. Some owners have discussed their pricing on internet forums. These prices have generally ranged from $15,000 to $20,000, depending on the model, package, and additional features selected.

The 13-foot standard layouts include either a sofa or a dinette up front. The first layout includes a sofa that can be converted into a bunk bed. The second layout swaps out the sofa for a wet bath and a second closet. In the deluxe version, you can choose between a dinette and a wet bath.

The rear dinettes that fold out to form the master bedroom remain constant. They also have full kitchens with sinks and small refrigerators.

Standard models provide a more basic approach to camping. Additional packages include a 1.9 cubic foot refrigerator in kitchens. Many electronic features, such as TV hookups, are optional. Customers who want to customize their amenities can choose from these models.

Deluxe models have a more comprehensive package offering than standard models. Larger features and amenities are available. Many electronics, such as TV hookups, air conditioners, vinyl flooring, and other high-end features, can be added.

KZ RV Escape

The KZ Escape series is the most adaptable on our list. Seven of the 11 floor plans meet our definition of small travel trailers. There are hybrids, slideouts, and even a toy hauler that are 22 feet or less long.

KZ created this series with everyone in mind. One of their models is aimed at off-road enthusiasts. The E191BH is taller and has 15-inch mud tires. It also has heated holding tanks that are electronically controlled, which is useful for off-season camping.

The E171MB has a one-of-a-kind storage feature. A storage space with both inside and outside access is located on the slide-out that houses the refrigerator. There is also a queen-size Murphy bed that shares space with a sofa. A full kitchen and bathroom complete the interior of the coach.

The E171 MB is 19.8 feet long and weighs 3,170 pounds dry. This coach will be easy to tow with your midsize SUV.

Little Guy Travel Trailers

The teardrop trailer was given new life by Little Guy Trailer Company, which brought it into the modern era. This RV manufacturer has introduced a fully functional teardrop with all the latest amenities. They honor the teardrop’s heritage by adhering to the maximum weight that a car can tow.

The Little Guy Mini Max is a lightweight RV that still has all the amenities of a larger model. A complete kitchen is hidden within the light maple hardwood cabinetry. A top-of-the-line four-cubic-foot refrigerator is included. A refrigerator of this size is unusual in RVs of this size.

Max the Small Guy is only four feet in length and weighs around 1,900 kilograms. Many 21-foot trailers exceed this weight. The ability to use a compact SUV as a tow vehicle is a great feature of this coach.

Many of the amenities found in other popular RV brands are included in the price of an Ollie. Ollie stands out from the competition thanks to its many extra features. Airstream has earned its place as an iconic national symbol of the road-trip life.  But what if an adventurer wanted to take their wheeled home off the paved path? The Basecamp travel trailer is Airstream’s answer to adventure for those who have smaller tow vehicles and backroad wanderlust. 

Airstream’s shift away from larger campers earned awards over the years and even an ongoing partnership with REI (which shows who their target audience actually is). While still pricier than comparable trailers, the Basecamp offers a more accessible entry point into the Airstream experience compared to the brand’s larger “silver bullets.” This is thanks to its smaller size and lighter base weight. But never fear: it still comes decked out with the iconic, on-brand silver aluminum siding that makes Airstream easily identifiable anywhere in the country.

Despite its compact size, the Basecamp doesn’t sacrifice much. A well-equipped kitchen, bathroom, lounge area, and sleeping space seamlessly coexist in this sub-17-foot trailer. It feels surprisingly roomy within the limited square footage.

Touring the interior of the nuCamp TAB had us inspired to take this teardrop trailer on a solo trip as the layout seems to be best suited for a party of one. Otherwise, treat this travel trailer as a welcome home base at the beginning and end of a long day trip when your adventurer’s agenda only includes checking off the most basic of needs.

What to Consider When Buying a Small or Compact Trailer

Before making a purchase, it’s important to consider these campers and RVs in person and thoroughly research each model to ensure it meets your specific personal requirements. For example, where do you like to camp? If you are a person who spends more time in a campground, an option like the Scamp with lower clearance and smaller tanks is a great bet. However, if you prefer to boondock and take your trailer off-roading, you’ll want more clearance and larger tanks so you can remain out longer. The 12 Most Impressive Small Fifth Wheel Campers for Light and Luxurious Travel

To avoid the crowds and camp in style, you’ll need one of the best small fifth wheel campers. Large 5th wheels are simply impractical for off-grid camping and boondocking.

Small fifth-wheel campers can go farther off the beaten path and do so more efficiently. The smallest 5th wheels are also compatible with a wider range of tow vehicles. 

For those that don’t necessarily want to upgrade their truck to find a compatible small fifth wheel camper, we are going to review some of the smallest 5th wheel campers we could find. 

Plus, we will outline the benefits of having a smaller camper over a larger floor plan.

1. Keystone Cougar Sport

The Cougar Sport is the newest addition to Keystone’s lineup of small fifth-wheel campers. It’s designed to be lightweight, so a wider variety of tow vehicles can pull it. It’s also quite affordable compared to some similar models. 

The interior floorplan on the 2100RK features a rear kitchen, a wall slide on the off-camp side that houses the sofa sleeper and the Furrion refrigerator, a convertible dinette with smart TV above, and a spacious queen-sized bed in the primary sleeping area. 

It’s a perfect 5th wheel for couples that don’t want to upgrade to a heavy-duty truck to camp in luxury. It also comes with a Solar Flex package option, which will help with your off-grid camping adventures. 

The Cougar Sport 2100RK offers a lot in a small package, but here are some of my favorite interior amenities: 

• The tall slide-out for added comfort and headroom.
• Keystone’s patented Hyper Deck flooring.
• The high-rise chef’s faucet and sprayer.
• A 40” Vizio Smart TV.
• A decorative, barnwood-style accent wall behind the queen bed.

2. Winnebago Micro Minnie Plus 25RKS

The 25RKS floor plan of the Winnebago Micro Minnie Plus features a rear kitchen design. Rear kitchen designs are always nice for reducing kitchen traffic because people won’t be walking through the kitchen when they are moving between the bedroom, bathroom, and living room areas. 

One thing I love about the Winnebago brand is that they stand behind their small 5th wheel trailers with a three-year warranty. This is an extended warranty when compared to what many other manufacturers offer. 

Some of the best interior features in the Micro Minnie Plus include: 

• Full Galley with Fridge , 3-Burner Cooktop, Microwave, and Stainless Steel Sink
• Bathroom with Shower, Foot-Pedal Flush Toilet, and Stainless Steel Sink
• Bedroom with a Queen bed and Optional TV Installation
• Roof Air Conditioning
• 10-Gallon Water Heater

3. Northwood Fox Mountain 235RLS

While it is still well under 30 feet in length, you will notice that the Northwood Fox Mountain 235RLS has a slightly heavier hitch weight than the previous small 5th wheel camper. Overall, however, this trailer is actually lighter, but the weight is simply distributed differently. 

The floor plan in this smallest 5th wheel trailer features a central kitchen with a lounge area on the back wall. That lounge area comes standard with a jackknife sofa and decorative throw pillows. But you will always have the option of upgrading to two separate lounge recliners. 

This Fox Mountain small 5th wheel camper checks a few important boxes for off-grid camping. That includes being built on a more rugged, independently-certified off-road chassis and including a 45-watt solar panel with a sidewall solar port as a standard feature. 

Of course, experienced boondockers may opt to upgrade to the 100 or 170-watt solar panel, but it is great to have this as an option. 

After reviewing them, some of the interior features that popped off the page for me include: 

• 10 Cubic Foot Fridge with Cold Weather Kit
• 32” LED TV with AM/FM/CD/DVD Player and Bluetooth Connectivity
• Stainless Steel Appliances and Solid Surface Kitchen Countertops
• Glass Shower Enclosure

4. Scamp Lite 19′ Deluxe 5th Wheel Camper

Scamp has been around for quite some time and, at first glance, the interior of their small. 5th wheel trailers do look a bit outdated. To be clear, Scamp is currently updating its 19′ small fifth wheel campers and they will be available again in 2023. 

That said, this small fifth-wheel camper model is a great choice for folks with smaller trucks because it is one of the lightest on the market. It is also a more affordable option if you are working with a slightly smaller budget. 

There are two layouts for the 19′ Scamp 5th wheel trailer. Both layouts place the toilet and shower at the front of the floor plan with the dining and sleeping areas at the back. The differences really lie in the layout of the kitchen. 

Layout A places the closet, fridge, and pantry on the driver’s side of the camper. Opposite of that, you will find the sink and the stovetop. Layout B flips this and expands the kitchen counter space, so it is an attractive choice if you need more food prep space.

5. Palomino Puma 255RKS

My personal favorite part about the Palomino small 5th wheel trailer is that it comes with plenty of options for outdoor cooking . As someone who likes to take advantage of good weather as much as possible, outdoor cooking is essential for me when I am camping. 

While it doesn’t come with these as standard options, you can add a micro kitchen with a cooking griddle at one of two locations on the passenger side of this camper. One option is directly in the center of the trailer and the other is closer to the front. 

Because this small fifth wheel camper is equipped with a large powered awning with LED underneath lights, however, both of these locations will be shaded or protected from rain when you are cooking outside. 

As far as the interior features go, these are a few that stood out during my review: 

• Floor Ducted Heat

• Undermount Stainless Steel Sink with Roll Up Stainless Steel Sink Covers
• Glass Range Cover
• 11 Cubic Foot Residential-Style Refrigerator

6. Jayco Eagle HT 255REOK

The Eagle HT 255REOK is Jayco’s shortest towable fifth-wheel camper. It is towable with most half-ton trucks and the shorter length will allow you to fit in more state and national park campgrounds. 

The kitchen and living room lie in the rear part of this small fifth wheel camper, which creates plenty of floor plan space for the master bedroom and bathroom in the front. Speaking of that bedroom, it features a queen-sized bed, TV, and his and hers nightstands and wards. 

If you plan on doing a lot of boondocking with this small fifth wheel trailer, you should upgrade to the 16” Goodyear tires to give it a little more ground clearance. The good news is that it is already equipped with a four-star handling package that makes it plenty capable of handling rough roads. 

In terms of the interior living space, these are some of the best features the Jayco Eagle has to offer: 

• Standard Outside Kitchen with Optional TV
• Window in Bedroom Wardrobe Slide for Added Ventilation and Natural Light
• Central Command Center with Built-in Tank Monitoring

7. Forest River Rockwood Signature 2442BS

The aim of the 2442BS floor plan in this small fifth-wheel camper is to maximize the space in the bedroom and bathroom. It features a large 48” by 30” shower with a seat and more countertop space below the vanity than you will find in the smallest fifth-wheel campers. 

The bedroom can be upgraded to include a king-sized bed for taller individuals to sleep in greater comfort. There is also a full-height shared wardrobe with shelving next to it and additional dresser storage at the foot of the bed below the TV stand. 

The kitchen is located in the rear section of the camper and it features extra-large countertops with bar seating. There are also two pantry areas for dry food storage and slide-outs in the living room and bedroom increase the overall interior square footage of this camper. 

Some of the best exterior amenities that caught my eye include: 

• Outside Griddle with Propane Hookup and Work Table
• Pass-Through Storage with Magnetic Latches
• Power Awning with Adjustable Rain Dump and LED Light Strip

8. Coachmen RV Chaparral Lite 25RE

The 25RE Chaparral Lite floor plan focuses on a really open living room space. The long slide-out pushes both the theater seating and the dinette back so that there is plenty of space for movement in the center of the room. 

Personally, my first thought was that this is the best floor plan I have seen so far if you want an open space for yoga in your small 5th wheel camper. But you can obviously choose to use it for whatever purpose you desire. 

The Chaparral Lite’s best interior features include: 

• Extra-Large Stainless Steel Oven with Residential Cooktop, Glass Cover, and Piezo Ignition
• Extra-Deep Stainless Steel Farm Style Single Basin Sink
• Hidden Compartmentalized Storage Drawers Under The Bed
• Modern Entertainment Center for 50” to 55” Television
• Theater Seating with Heat, Massage, LED Lights, and Cup Holders

9. Escape Trailer 5.0

The Escape Trailer 5.0 is one of the smallest 5th wheel campers and it certainly features one of the most unique designs. It is towable with a mid-size truck and is also available at a price point that is hard for other small 5th wheels to beat. 

It can even work with short-bed trucks and has a lower center of gravity than most 5th wheels. That means it is less subject to being blown around on the road if you encounter high winds. It also boasts a full wet bath and separate sleeping and living areas. 

Inside, some of the Escape’s notable features include: 

• Stainless Steel Kitchen Appliances
• 6 Cubic-Foot 3-Way RV Refrigerator
• Custom Wood Interior with High-Grade Rolled Vinyl Flooring
• LED Captain’s Reading Lights On Both Sides of the Bed

10. KZ RV Durango Half-Ton D230RKD

To finish things out, we are stepping back up to a couple of slightly larger floor plans. That said, the Durango Half-Ton D230RKD is still short enough to fit in most state and national parks, as well as county-owned and private RV campgrounds. 

Coming from someone who probably has too much outdoor recreation gear, I love the pass-through storage compartment at the center of this 5th wheel. By locating it in that spot, the manufacturer also kept a lot of the storage weight in front of the trailer’s axle. 

That will allow for safer towing, but when you are not towing, here are a few interior amenities you can enjoy:

• Maple-Glazed Cabinetry with Seamless Solid Countertops
• LED TV and Multimedia Stereo with DVD, Bluetooth, and Wireless Connectivity
• Standard Tri-Fold Hide-a-Bed Sofa with Optional Freestanding Dinette Table
• Deep Undermount Stainless Steel Sink with Residential Faucet and Sprayer
• Double-Door Gas/Electric Refrigerator with Temperature Controls

11. KZ RV Sportsmen 231RK

One of the absolute smallest fifth wheels from KZ RV is the Sportsmen 231RK. This trailer is light enough to be towed by most mid-size trucks, but it still includes the kind of luxury amenities that you would want if you were a full-time RVer. 

The first thing that caught my eye about the 231RK is that the kitchen is located in the rear. This is something I look for more and more nowadays because of the ease and convenience it provides to your day-to-day lifestyle. 

In trailers with central kitchens, traffic can get in the way of your ability to cook comfortably. Most front kitchen small 5th wheel trailers also have a lowered kitchen ceiling that makes them less comfortable for taller individuals. You don’t have to worry about either of those problems with a rear kitchen travel trailer. 

In addition to its rear kitchen, the other features I like in this small fifth wheel include: 

• Cooktop with Recessed, 3-Burner Work Area, Glass Cover, and LED Accented Oven Knobs
• Theater Seating with Cup Holders, USB Ports, and Heat/Massage Functions
• Stainless Steel Sink with High-Rise Faucet and Pull-Down Sprayer

• Fully Enclosed, Heated, and Insulated to Protect Tanks and Pipes

Discoveries on the eastern railroad: Nizhniy Novgorod and Perm (Part 2)

Every layer of the city added to the excitement of getting closer to the centre. For a change, Lenin Square was not in the middle of the city. Lenin's statue looked more relaxed than in Petersburg and Moscow. And this time, Lenin wasn't alone either. To his left were tiny metal members of the proletariat, referred to as "reptiles" by the locals! The Kravinsky Bridge, spanning the Oka river, connects the two parts of Nizhniy while the Oka snakes below and surrenders her embankment to the bigger Volga. The Kremlin's gates ushered me into the massive grounds that housed local government buildings and, more importantly, museums, cathedrals and war monuments. My personal favourite was the `Museum of People's Unity', a one-room miracle at the Ivanovskaya tower that retraced Nizhniy's steps through the Mongol invasions, the Times of Trouble and its rise to an important trade centre.

"How much is one student ticket?" I asked the supervisor. He looked up at me through his glasses and grey fringe, and said, "For our students, it's 20 roubles, but for international..." "...Nu ya vasha," I interrupted, showing my St Petersburg State University student card. No one can appreciate price discrimination more than students in Russia - even compared to prices for international students, students enrolled in Russian universities pay a fraction! "So where are you from?" he asked. This is my favourite question because it always leads to royal treatment. And it did! I would have loved to explore all his suggestions, but, considering I was there for just a day, I had to stick to my itinerary and head to Flat 3, 214 Prospekt Gagarina. This is where Soviet Nuclear Physicist and Nobel Laureate Andrei Sakharov was imprisoned under internal exile from 1980-86 for criticising the USSR's invasion of Afghanistan. Today, the flat is the Sakharov Museum and has exhibits on his life, work and the support extended by Vladlen Pavlenkov of US-based `Freedom of Communications' to ensure that Sakharov's struggle was known to the world, and to lobby with the Gorbachev administration for his release. I spent the afternoon walking about `Shvitsariya' (Switzerland) - a park nearby running at least a couple of kilometres along the Oka embankment. I snailed my way through the city and got to Gorky Square. During the Soviet period, Nizhniy was named Gorky after the Communist writer, Maksim Gorky, and in the middle of the Square is a small park with a statue of the city's former namesake.

Yamal was a big mistake! This could unarguably have been the Russian Railways' best train, with immaculate velvet cushioned seats, brand new fittings and linen that could turn the best of us into Sleeping Beauties! That's why Yamal was a mistake - any train after this was going to be a disappointment and I had five more to go before getting to Vladivostok!

14 hours later, I stepped onto Perm's soil. "Perm is a city most travellers could bear to miss." My first steps in the city saw me already echoing my guidebook's sentiments! I had expected Nizhniy to be small; instead, she surprised me with her size and energy. And now, when I thought Perm would be like the Nizhniy I saw, Perm was determined to be the Nizhniy I had initially imagined. I checked into Hotel Ural on Lenin Street, the city's spine, and almost immediately started exploring. I didn't feel the city had much to offer a tourist except, perhaps, an attractive setting in the Urals and a lot of theatres and philharmonic concert halls! But the people factor was the unexpected winner. Everyone from the hotel staff to random people on the street was very friendly and ready to go out of their way to help! But there was bummer - Perm was freezing and my two sweaters were finally coming in handy! The lack of tourist attractions didn't bother me much. After all, Perm was just an excuse to go to Perm-36, the only surviving Gulag (Soviet forced labour camps) museum, located in Kutchino village about 80 km east. That's where I headed the next morning.  

Lyubov Tretiakova, a co-ordinator with Perm-36, had organised my visit. She suggested which buses to take from Perm and even sent her car to pick me up from the point where the road to the museum branched off from the bus's route. Moreover, when I got there, she said she would drop me to the next village, 20 km away, from where I could get a bus back to Perm. Narrow wooden plank beds; single toilets shared by over 50 people; possibility to take the day off only if temperature dipped below -55˚C; worn-out shoes and gloves; electric fences; one-year old Larissa's grave - this was Perm-36. On my way back, as the bus moved along the grassy hills sprinkled with yellow flowers, I remembered Lyubov mentioning that Perm-36 is primarily funded by the Perm regional government, which in turn must receive some funds from the Kremlin. It suddenly occurred to me that the journey from Nizhniy to Perm was a lot longer than the thousands kilometres I had covered a couple of days ago. It was the journey from Sakharov's exile for speaking against the government to the restoration of a former Gulag camp dedicated to the victims of political repression with support and funding from the very same government! The West doesn't acknowledge this journey and I don't know what former Gulag prisoners think of it either. It's probably not enough. But, at least, like a foetus's first heartbeats, it is alive!

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. & MINNEAPOLIS--( BUSINESS WIRE )-- Range Energy (Range), the hardware company bringing powered trailers to the commercial trucking market, and Thermo King, a leader in sustainable transport temperature control solutions and a Trane Technologies brand, today announced a strategic collaboration to advance the commercialization of electric refrigerated trailers.

With a shared pursuit to make commercial trucking cleaner, safer, and more efficient, this collaboration enables the companies to align on a preferred electric trailer technology architecture, including integrating Range’s electric trailer platform with Thermo King's hybrid trailer refrigeration units (TRUs) and electric TRUs. The integration process will also include extensive testing, customer pilots, and the public demonstration of an electric TRU.

Through this collaboration, Range and Thermo King will focus on driving innovation across key areas:

• Architectural definition and interoperability: Aligning on the technical architecture for electric refrigerated trailers, information exchange, model energy usage, charging options, and evaluating single- and multi-temperature Thermo King TRUs.
• Operations testing: Identifying pilot customers to utilize electric TRU trailers in live operations, as well as developing and executing on an Operations Test Plan in Q3 2024.
• Manufacturing and commercialization: Evaluating assembly requirements, manufacturing capabilities, supplier introductions, and sales and servicing support; engaging third-party standards-making organizations; and collaborating on regulatory outcomes (e.g., weight allowances, emissions standards, charging support, etc.) and government incentives to streamline commercial adoption of electric TRUs.

Column: Even Trump knows Republicans have gone too far on abortion

Good morning. There are 209 days until the election, and Donald Trump is feeling the heat.

But not from the sun, which disappeared Monday. And the world didn’t end! There wasn’t even a plague of locusts or a murder of crows. What a letdown, especially for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who has been all amped up that the eclipse was a warning from her God.

“God is sending America strong signs to tell us to repent,” she posted on X.

Later, she doubled down: “Yes eclipses are predictable and earthquakes happen and we know when comets are passing by, however God created all of these things and uses them to be signs for those of us who believe.”

Just a thought: What if the gods are using the eclipse to tell us everything is awesome? Like, you guys are doing great, so here’s a cool treat?

Anyway, this one is for all you suburban soccer moms out there (no hate, I’ve sliced my share of oranges) and those who vote like one.

The Trump punt

Remember the Trump who took credit for destroying Roe vs. Wade? The guy who has many times declared himself the “person proudly responsible for the ending” of national abortion protections?

Well, meet the new Trump, the guy who wants it both ways : anti-abortion warrior but also, whatever you want is fine by me .

You’ve heard by now that Trump put out a four-minute video Monday ( heavily edited and filled with weird jump cuts ) desperately dodging the issue of a federal abortion ban, despite the fact that at least four times in past months, he has indicated support for a national 15-week prohibition.

Instead, he is now saying that abortion should be a state issue, and “whatever they decide must be the law of the land.”

Like, all of the sudden, he’s Mr. Reasonable, when, as Reproductive Freedom for All President and Chief Executive Mini Timmaraju pointed out, he’s clearly “trying to neutralize” what has become a political liability.

Small numbers, mighty voters

Support of drastic abortion restrictions has all too obviously become a big, fat stinker in this election — despite loud glee from ultra-MAGA extremists who think repressing women is great.

A recent KFF poll found that 67% of women consider abortion to be the most important issue in the election, as do 21% of independent voters.

The authors behind that poll found that while most people have made up their minds on the issue and the candidates, abortion “may move small numbers” of voters in key demographics.

Those voters are crucial.

Mike Madrid , a founder of the Lincoln Project and author of the upcoming book “The Latino Century,” said those small margins — especially in swing states — could cost Trump the election.

“He needs to stop the bleeding,” Madrid said via text.

Trump’s advisors realize they have “overplayed their hand” and are worried about “the extremist label,” he said. Because since 2016, the party that is perceived as more extreme has lost.

So Trump is wiggling around, trying to find a sweet spot that will take the focus off reproductive rights, where he is undeniably extreme.

Even Trump seemed to acknowledge that this gambit was a weak-sauce attempt to get votes.

“You must follow your heart on this issue,” he said. “But remember, you must also win elections to restore our culture and in fact, to save our country.”

We’re not that dumb

But “the damage is done,” Madrid said. “It’s like saying, ‘I’ll require all cars to have seat belts’ after we’ve removed the brakes.”

And indeed the brakes are gone.

According to the Guttmacher Insitute , which tracks reproductive health policy, 20 states have abortion bans that could kick into effect before a woman realizes she’s pregnant; 14 of those basically ban abortion altogether.

Those bans have created a reproductive healthcare desert in the South, where a woman who wants an abortion must travel hours or days outside the region — which of course makes it nearly impossible for poor women. About 1 in 5 women now has to travel to receive abortion care.

But states aren’t satisfied with that. Some Texas counties have laws that seek to punish women for traveling for an abortion. Other states, including Idaho, Alabama and Oklahoma, are trying to do the same.

Women have been criminally charged for miscarriages, and last week, a leaked video showed Texas Republicans pondering the death penalty for women who have abortions.

So now we are talking forced births — s ometimes with no exceptions for rape or incest.

Trump may want us to believe he’s had a come-to-sanity moment on reproductive rights, but all you have to do is watch the video to see him go off the reasonable rails. Halfway through, he starts talking about how we currently execute babies. (Executing babies is illegal and does not happen, for those who need clarification.)

“It must be remembered that the Democrats are the radical ones on this position because they support abortion up to and even beyond the ninth month,” Trump said. “The concept of having an abortion in the later months and even execution after birth. And that’s exactly what it is. The baby is born, the baby is executed after birth is unacceptable.”

I realize the grammar in that is terrible, but that’s literally from his official “Statement on Life.”

And, as Timmaraju said, it’s clearly aimed at letting his people know he’s still with them.

“That was not even a dog whistle. That was a big neon sign to the extremist nut jobs,” she said. “I don’t know how you can continue to separate the insanity from these other statements.”

And though Trump spent the first part of his Monday speech extolling how much he loves IVF and strongly supports “couples who are trying to have a precious baby,” it’s the same legal issue. (Author’s note: Except you, LGBTQ+ folks. Not sure he supports your rights.)

Eventually, no abortion means no in vitro fertilization. Because once that embryo is created, it’s a precious baby under the “conception is life” argument.

No matter how much some Republicans are contorting themselves over IVF, the fact is, an embryo in the womb is no different than an embryo in a freezer. You can’t say one is life and the other is like a couch in storage.

Then, of course, there are the states that are amenable to banning contraception, which some consider a form of abortion.

So the future of states’ rights is no contraception, no abortion and no travel to get one.

That is definitely more reasonable.

Once a liar

Mitchell, the data expert, said Trump’s “mush” of a statement is unlikely to take the focus off abortion, making it a “misfire.”

Leaving it to states may sound good to unsure conservative or independent voters in places like California — at first — but a little bit of critical thinking will likely send them right back to their quagmire of doubt.

“He didn’t solve the problem for himself; he just postponed it,” Mitchell told me. And not even for that long.

Within hours of Trump’s announcement, the Biden campaign was fundraising off it.

“Let’s be clear: Trump is betting that we will stop caring. That we’ll get distracted. Discouraged,” Biden HQ texted early Monday afternoon.

Mitchell points out that voters often think that having the right position on an issue is what makes a candidate strong. But in his experience, what really works is keeping the voters focused on strong issues.

For Trump, that may be immigration. He’s been pounding on the “hordes” at the border for multiple election cycles and is upping the ante on that, especially in swing states — I’ll be looking more closely at how he’s doing that Thursday.

But for now, the takeaway from Trump’s new abortion position is that it’s a dodge, not a change. That can best be seen in the response from his supporters.

The Susan B. Anthony Pro Life America group swore it was “deeply disappointed in President Trump’s position” but also “will work tirelessly to defeat President Biden and extreme congressional Democrats.”

That’s a limp condemnation, one that makes me think even Republicans know he is lying.

Finally, something we can all agree on.

Building the first highway segment in the U.S. that can charge electric vehicles big and small as they drive

Construction to begin on test bed in Indiana to develop wireless charging for electric vehicles traveling at highway speeds

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — At the “Crossroads of America,” Purdue University engineers and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) are working to make it possible for electric vehicles ranging from tractor-trailers to passenger cars to wirelessly charge while driving on highways.

Construction begins as soon as April 1 on a quarter-mile test bed on U.S. Highway 231/U.S. Highway 52 in West Lafayette that the team will use for testing how well a patent-pending system designed by Purdue engineers can provide power to a heavy-duty electric truck traveling at highway speeds.

“Thanks once again to some engineers and pioneers from Purdue, we’re developing the world’s first highway test bed for wireless charging,” said Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb to attendees of COP27 , a United Nations environmental conference that took place in Egypt in 2022. “Please remember that one. Yes, we will be testing whether concrete can charge passing trucks — and don’t bet against a Purdue Boilermaker.”

The electric truck, provided by Indiana-based company Cummins Inc., will drive over the test bed as part of a pilot program tentatively planned to start next year. The hope is to electrify a section of an Indiana interstate in the next four to five years. 

A few other states and countries have also begun testing roads that wirelessly charge EVs. But making this possible for highways — and heavy-duty trucks in particular — is a unique challenge. Because vehicles travel so much faster on highways than city roads, they need to be charged at higher power levels.

The Purdue-designed wireless charging system is intended to work at power levels much higher than what has been demonstrated in the U.S. so far. By accommodating the higher power needs for heavy-duty vehicles, the design is also able to support the lower power needs of other vehicle classes.

Why design electrified highways for trucks first?

An electrified highway in Indiana would serve much of the nation’s traffic. Eighty percent of the U.S. can be reached within a day’s drive from the state’s pass-through highways. 

Building electrified highways with heavy-duty trucks in mind would maximize greenhouse gas reductions and the economic feasibility of developing infrastructure for EVs.

Heavy-duty trucks are one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions for the U.S. transportation sector because they make up a large portion of interstate traffic. Compared to passenger cars, these trucks also need a lot more fuel so that they can constantly transport everything from the packages we order to groceries.

“The so-called ‘middle mile’ of the supply chain, which refers to all the travel heavy-duty trucks have to do to carry goods from one major location to another, is the most challenging part of the transportation sector to decarbonize,” said Nadia Gkritza , a Purdue professor of civil engineering and agricultural and biological engineering .

But if electric heavy-duty trucks could charge or maintain their state-of-charge using highways, their batteries could be smaller in size and they could carry more cargo, significantly reducing the costs of using EVs for freight transportation. Since trucking contributes the most to U.S. gross domestic product compared to other modes of freight transportation, lowering costs for heavy-duty electric trucks could help attract more investment into electrifying highways that all vehicle classes would share.

“We’re developing a system that has the power to charge semitractor-trailers as they move 65 miles per hour down the road,” John Haddock , a professor in Purdue’s Lyles School of Civil Engineering, told U.S. News & World Report .

Highways that charge EVs like a smartphone

The technology Purdue is developing would enable highway pavement to provide power to EVs similarly to how newer smartphones use magnetic fields to wirelessly charge when placed on a pad.

“If you have a cellphone and you place it on a charger, there is what’s called magnetic fields that are coming up from the charger into that phone. We’re doing something similar. The only thing that’s different is the power levels are higher and you’re going out across a large distance from the roadway to the vehicle,” said Steve Pekarek , Purdue’s Edmund O. Schweitzer, III Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering , in an episode of “American Innovators,” a Made in America series by Consensus Digital Media . “This is a simple solution. There are complicated parts of it, and that we leave to the vehicle manufacturers.”

In the wireless charging system that Purdue researchers have designed, transmitter coils would be installed in specially dedicated lanes underneath normal concrete pavement and send power to receiver coils attached to the underside of a vehicle.

Other wireless EV charging efforts are also using transmitter and receiver coils, but they haven’t been designed for the higher power levels that heavy-duty trucks need. The Purdue-designed coils accommodate a wider power range — larger vehicles wouldn’t need multiple low-power receiver coils on the trailer to charge from the road, which has been proposed to meet the high-power demands. Instead, in the Purdue design, a single receiver coil assembly is placed under the tractor, greatly simplifying the overall system.

Purdue researchers have also designed the transmitter coils to work within concrete pavement, which makes up 20% of the U.S. interstate system . Other coil designs have only been developed for use in asphalt pavement. 

“The whole idea is if you can charge your car on the road while in motion, then you’re basically riding for free,” Aaron Brovont , a Purdue research assistant professor in Purdue’s Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, explained in a Scripps news segment .

The team has completed testing of how well 20-foot-long sections of concrete and asphalt could handle heavy loads with the transmitter coils embedded. The researchers imitated truck traffic by having a machine repeatedly drive a loaded one-half semi axle over the pavements.

Alongside the pavement mechanical tests, the team has also done lab tests verifying the electromagnetic performance of the bare transmitter coils and the receiver coils.

Laying the groundwork for highways that recharge EVs everywhere  

As reported by The New York Times , CNBC , Scripps , Popular Mechanics and other news outlets, the research has the potential to define what EV charging looks like on highways.

The team’s partnerships are not just in Indiana, but also throughout the country. In addition to its funding from INDOT through the Joint Transportation Research Program at Purdue, the project is affiliated with a fourth-generation National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center called Advancing Sustainability through Powered Infrastructure for Roadway Electrification (ASPIRE) , dedicated to progressing the field of electrified transportation in all its forms.

Most real-world deployments of wireless pavement charging in the U.S. are led by members of ASPIRE. Purdue is a founding member of ASPIRE and Gkritza is the campus director of ASPIRE’s Purdue location.

Headquartered at Utah State University, ASPIRE integrates academia, scientific research, and real-world tests and deployments across more than 400 members from 10 partner universities: Purdue, the University of Colorado Boulder, the University of Texas at El Paso, the University of Auckland in New Zealand, Colorado State University, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, Virginia Tech, Cornell University, and the University of Utah. These universities are joined by more than 60 industry, government and nonprofit members across all sections of the electric transportation ecosystem, as well as community partners and advisors.

ASPIRE’s members at Purdue and Cummins are also leading a project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy to develop an EV charging and hydrogen fueling plan for medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks on the Midwest’s Interstate 80 corridor. The corridor serves Indiana, Illinois and Ohio. The plan will examine the use of the wireless power transfer technology that Gkritza and her team are testing in West Lafayette.

“We don’t envision 100% of the roads being electrified,” Gkritza said in an episode of “Resources Radio,” a podcast by Washington, D.C., research institution Resources for the Future . “But we see the potential for dynamic wireless power pavement technology as complementary to an expanding network of EV charging stations that we will see very soon here in the U.S. We feel it would be useful in areas where charging stations are scarce in underserved communities, even supporting transit routes where initial charging at the depots and terminal stations might not be enough and there might need to be some charging in between the routes.”

The researchers anticipate that it may be 20 to 30 years before EVs can receive the full power they need while driving at highway speeds. It is up to EV manufacturers to decide whether to incorporate receiver coils into their vehicles.

“The technical obstacles that we need to overcome are not insurmountable. Those can be overcome with proper design,” Dionysios Aliprantis , a Purdue electrical and computer engineering professor, told The New York Times .

The team hopes that the results of their experiments could help convince the industry that electrified highways could work.

“We are Purdue University, where the difficult is done today and the impossible takes a bit longer,” Haddock said.

The initiative’s mission is to spark and nurture innovations within Purdue to create scalable technologies for the energy transition, transform the nature of energy-focused learning, and accelerate the translation of these technologies through academic-industry synergies.

The Top 12 Things to Do in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia

Take a first-rate trip to Russia's fifth city

Although it's Russia's fifth-largest city, you could be forgiven for never having heard of Nizhny Novgorod. Notwithstanding that another Russian city is simply called " Novgorod ," the current name of the city just doesn't have a memorable ring to it. (By contrast, its name during the Soviet years — Gorky, like the famous author — was much more iconic.) At any rate, this city of just over a million around six hours east of Moscow is more than worth a visit. These are just 12 reasons why!

Tour the Kremlin's 13 Towers

Like most every other city in Russia, Nizhny Novgorod is home to a Kremlin. (The word "kremlin" means "citadel" in Russian, and has nothing to do with the modern Russian government) One thing that elevated the Kremlin of Nizhny Novgorod above others in Russia (with the possible exception of the Moscow Kremlin and one or two others), however, is the fact that its wall has 13 towers. During the summer months, at least one free walking tour per day operates from the main entrance of Nizhny Novgorod's Kremlin.

Climb Russia's Longest Staircase

Named for one of the most famous Russian pilots of the early aviation age (Valery Chkalov), the Chkalov Stairs connect two of Nizhny Novgorod's public squares, which sit on the upper and lower embankments of the Volga River, respectively. Built in 1943 (during the period when Nizhny Novgorod was known as Gorky), the Chkalov Stairs currently have the distinction of being the longest staircase in Russia.

Go Wild at Limpopo Zoo

One thing that surprises many travelers to Nizhny Novgorod is how amazing its zoo, colloquially known as Limpopo is. In addition to being home to a tropical botanical garden (which, not surprisingly, is indoors), the zoo hosts a variety of reptiles, mammals and birds. There's also a small sculpture park on the grounds of Nizhny Novgorod's zoo, including both original and replica pieces.

Shop (or Just Stroll) Along a Storied High Street

Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street has been the de-facto "Main Street" of Nizhny Novgorod for more than 200 years. Well, minus the Soviet Union period, during which the cafes that once (and now) lined it became somewhat worthless, since intellectual conversations were basically forbidden. These days, you can come here for a cup of Russian tea then shop at the dozens of boutiques you'll find on either side of the street.

Sun Yourself at the Spit

Nizhny Novgorod sits at the confluence of the Oka and Volga Rivers, with the triangle of land at the point they meet being known as the Nizhny Novgorod Spit. Ignoring the unfortunate double-meaning of its name for a moment, this is actually a wonderful place to get a tan, if it's summer in the city and the sun happens to be shining. Even if not, photographers will enjoy a trip here for a view of the Kremlin and city center across the Volga.

Marvel at the Open-Air Museum of Rozhdestvenskaya Street

Like Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, Rozhdestvenskaya Street has long been one of the most important streets in Nizhny Novgorod. However, while the former has become a primarily commercial artery in recent decades, the charm of the latter is in its well-maintained buildings, which hearken back to the mid-18th century. In fact, some locals go so far as to consider Rozhdestvenskaya Street an "open-air museum."

Ride Russia's Newest Cable Car

Russian investment in infrastructure isn't quite as dramatic as that of, say, China, but the Federation has nonetheless built a selection of interesting and modern transportation systems since the fall of the USSR. Among them is the just-opened cable car, which travels from the center of Nizhny Novgorod over the Volga River to suburban Bor. At any rate, a ride over the river and back is definitely worth inclusion on your list of things to do in Nizhny Novgorod.

Taste Traditional Shchi Soup

Shchi is one of Nizhy Novgorod's most delicious local specialties, available in most every local restaurant that serves Russian food. From above, a bowl of shchi seems incredibly complicated, with a colorful palette that suggests the inclusion of dozens of diverse ingredients. In fact, the magic of shchi is in its simplicity. Building on the traditional pan-Russian recipe of cabbage, pork fat and salt (yes, just three ingredients), locals in Nizhny Novgorod sometimes add minced meat or egg whites as bonus items, then top the tangy soup with a dollop of sour cream.

Survey Amazing Russian Orthodox Architecture

Think the only amazing Russian Orthodox churches are in Moscow and St. Petersburg? Think again. Nizhny Novgorod boasts several amazing examples of Russian Orthodox architecture. From the brilliant golde domes John the Baptist Cathedral near the Volga River, to the expansive grounds of 14th-century Pechersky Ascension Monastery, Nizhny Novgorod is an architecture buff's dream!

Take a Look Back in Time

Nizhny Novgorod's historical center is relatively large and well-preserved, but a stroll (or 10) through it isn't the only way to get a feel for the city's centuries-long past. Head to the Russian Museum of Photography, which not only showcases a variety of images of Nizhny Novgorod that date back a century or even longer, but also spotlights the equipment Russian photographers have used throughout the years, and notable figures in Russia's photography history as well.

Visit the Convent from the Movie "Salt"

You'd be forgiven if you've entirely forgotten the 2010 film "Salt." However, if you remember any destination from this spy thriller, it's likely the facade of Makaryev Convent, which is located within day-trip distance of Nizhny Novgorod. Having served as a monastery from its consecration in the early 15th century up until the beginning of the Russian Revolution, Makaryev became a convent after the fall of the Soviet Union , and is now home to 22 nuns.

The city is divided by the River Oka into two major parts: the Upper city ( Verkhnyaya or Nagornaya chast ) on the hilly right side and the Lower city ( Nizhnyaya or Zarechnaya chast — what literally means "the part over the river") on the left bank of the river. The Upper city is the old historical part of Nizhny Novgorod, whereas the Lower city is larger, newer and consists of more industrial districts.

The city was founded by Grand Duke George II of Russia in 1221 at the confluence of two most important rivers of his principality, the Volga and the Oka. Its name literally means Newtown the Lower , to distinguish it from the older Novgorod . A major stronghold for border protection, Nizhny Novgorod fortress took advantage of a natural moat formed by the two rivers.

Along with Moscow and Tver, Nizhny Novgorod was among several newly founded towns that escaped Mongol devastation on account of its insignificance and grew up into important centers of Russian political life during the period of Tatar yoke. For a short period of time it was the capital of the Suzdal Principality and competed with Moscow for the power in the region. However the competition with Moscow was lost and in 1392 the city was incorporated into Muscovy. Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin was built in 1508-1511 (under supervision of the Italian fortress engineers) and became one of the strongest Russian citadels. There is a legend saying that the project was initially developed with participation of Leonardo da Vinci. However there is no documented proof of Leonardo's work for that project, the only thing the legend is based on is the striking resemblance of Leonardo's sketches and the actual Kremlin schemes. The fortress was strong enough to withstand Tatar sieges in 1520 and 1536.

In 1612, the so-called national militia , gathered by a local merchant Kuzma Minin and commanded by Knyaz Dmitry Pozharsky expelled the Polish troops from Moscow, thus putting an end to the Time of Troubles and establishing the rule of the Romanov dynasty.

In 1817, the Makaryev Monastery Fair, one of the liveliest in the world the 16th-18th centuries, was transferred to Nizhny Novgorod, which thereupon started to attract numerous visitors and by the mid-19th century it turned Nizhny Novgorod into trade capital of the Russian Empire.

Under the Soviet period, the trade connections of the city were abandoned and Nizhny Novgorod became an important industrial centre instead. During the communist time the city was closed to foreigners to safeguard the security of Soviet military research. The physicist and the Nobel laureate Andrei Sakharov was exiled there during 1980-1986 to limit his contacts with foreigners.

The climate in the region is humid continental and it is similar to the climate in Moscow , although colder in winter, which lasts from late November until late March with a permanent snow cover.

By car [ edit ]

Nizhny Novgorod is situated on the M7/E30 road. The road is in decent condition, although with traffic it can take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours to drive to/from Moscow .

Many companies operate passenger boat service between Moscow and Astrakhan , with stops at most cities along the Volga River.

By foot [ edit ].

The city centre is compact and walkable. However, there are many inclines or steps from the river banks. The bridges are not pedestrian friendly since the sidewalk is very narrow and cars drive extremely fast close to the pedestrians.

By city rail [ edit ]

The City Rail connects areas where there are no metro lines. Connects with the subway at the Moscow railway station. It has 2 lines: Sormovskaya and Priokskaya. The fare by train costs 28 rubles. According to the Citicard Transport Card, the fare is 26 rubles. Also by train you can get to the nearest suburb, or transfer to suburban trains to Dzerzhinsk, Bor, Semenov or Arzamas.

By bus and trolleybus [ edit ]

As of May 2017 in each district of the city there are several city bus routes. The number of trolleybus routes is much less. In one district of the city there are 1-2 trolleybus routes. Trolleybus routes are completely absent in the Leninsky city district. It is worth noting that trolleybuses do not connect the Lower City to the Upper. This is because the trolleybuses do not have enough power to climb the mountain.

The trolleybus network is divided into 3 parts:

• The upper trolleybus network (it unites all three districts - Nizhegorodsky, Sovetsky and Prioksky) with a turning circle on the Minin Square, near the Kremlin.
• The lower trolleybus network (connects Kanavinsky, Moskovsky and Sormovsky districts)
• The Avtozavod trolleybus network (connects all the distant sleeping microdistricts among themselves)

By tram [ edit ]

Throughout the city, land trams run. The longest route of all is 417. It connects the outskirts of Avtozavodsky district with the Moskovsky Rail Terminal. The journey takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The route passes through the sleeping areas (approximately 75% of the way). Also in remote neighborhoods there are routes of several more trams, but in most cases, they are in the Upper City. By the way, you can reach there by tram 27 or 10 directly from the Moscow railway station.

By marshrutka [ edit ]

Marshrutkas do not stop at every stop. To indicate your intention to exit a marshrutka, press a button and to indicate your intention to enter a marshrutka en-route, you need to wave your hand.

By bicycle [ edit ]

Nizhny Novgorod has not very developed bicycle infrastructure. Special bike paths exist only on the Upper-Volga and Lower-Volga embankments and on Rozhdestvenskaya Street.

The upper city is very hilly and full of steep inclines and even many locals will get off their bicycles and push their bikes up the hill by foot. Drivers can be reckless and pose a danger to cyclists. The roads can also be icy during the winter. City cyclists solve this problem by replacing summer tires with winter tires.

Also, in 2017 the implementation of a new integrated transport scheme of the city began. It provides for a large number of bicycle paths in the Upper City (including on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street) and in the Lower City.

• Pechersky Ascencion Monastery , near Sennaya Square a couple miles east of downtown, halfway down the slope to Volga. With a cathedral and several churches surrounded by a restored stone wall, the monastery is the seat of the archbishops of Nizhny Novgorod.
