Here’s an exclusive excerpt from the lengthy interview with  Explorer writer Ian Spelling:

Janeway is back… in more ways than one! Not only is Kate Mulgrew reprising her iconic Star Trek: Voyager role in animated sensation Star Trek: Prodigy, but in massively multiplayer online RPG Star Trek Online as well. So how does it feel for the actress to be portraying a holographic Captain Janeway, an animated Admiral Janeway, and a menacing Mirror Janeway all at once…? “Let me tell you something,” Mulgrew marvels. “From the moment I stepped onto that bridge 25 years ago, I knew that anything was possible. It has been! That’s truly the legacy of Star Trek. Once you undertake a role like this, the captain of a starship, you’re asking for a wild, wonderful, and phenomenal experiences to befall you. And so, they have. It was not a terrific surprise that I was called to voice the character that I created. It was simply a great pleasure. I thought it would have been so disappointing had they given it to somebody else to imitate me, but they didn’t. That’s the wisdom of [Executive Producer] Alex Kurtzman. Smart guy.” That said, it wasn’t a no-brainer. “No, it wasn’t actually,” she notes. “I gave it some real consideration over quite a long period of time. But I was so enamored of Alex Kurtzman’s approach and of his intelligence that I didn’t consider too long. The reality is, nobody else could voice it but me, in order to make it an honest success. I think people will respond to the face that it is Mulgrew’s voice in the embodiment of Janeway, but I’m thrilled that he asked me, and I’m thrilled to be doing it. It’s really been quite a happy and satisfying experience.” Mulgrew begins to describe how Janeway came back to her “almost immediately,” but then course corrects to stress that the character “never left me.” As a result, when she sat in front of a microphone to record her dialogue for Prodigy, Janeway spilled out of her as if it were the 1990s and she was looping dialogue for an episode of Voyager. “It’s so deeply imprinted,” Mulgrew says of Janeway. “She resides within. She never leaves, and she’s never far. When the scripts were given to me, the booth was closed. Particularly being within the circumstances of the pandemic, I felt a real need, almost a calling, to just get her back, and to let her go. That’s what happened. It was wonderful. Lovely.”

Star Trek Explorer #3 features a wide range of  Trek content, including an interview with Q actor John de Lancie focusing on his return in Star Trek: Picard , a trip behind the scenes of  Star Trek: Prodigy with the show’s creative leaders, and two new short stories: a Captain Proton adventure from Voyager writer Lisa Klink , and new Khan Singh short story from the master of Khan fiction, author Greg Cox.

Star Trek Explorer issue 3 delights with interviews, short fiction

Star Trek Explorer issue 3 beams onto newsstands on June 28.

A few days ago, we at Redshirts Always Die brought you an exclusive excerpt from the newest issue of Titan Comics’ Star Trek Explorer magazine. The issue hits newsstands this Tuesday, June 28. If you liked that first glimpse, you’re going to love the whole thing!

Even in 21st-century fandom, when information and opinion about our favorite franchise are only a push notification and a mouse click away, taking time for the more leisurely reading a magazine offers is a lot of fun.

Press deadlines don’t allow Star Trek Explorer to be the bearer of breaking Star Trek news . But its 120-plus pages of interviews with stars and creators, deep dives into the Trek mythos, and even original short fiction, all generously illustrated with full-color photographs from throughout the franchise’s 56-year history, make this magazine a delight.

Star Trek Explorer issue 3

De Lancie and Mulgrew interviews headline Star Trek Explorer issue 3

Star Trek Explorer issue 3 features interviews with two Star Trek actors reprising their iconic roles. John de Lancie returned as Q in season 2 of Star Trek: Picard , and Kate Mulgrew is Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy —as well as the Mirror Universe’s Janeway in the Star Trek Online game. Both performers talk about the extent to which they are or aren’t playing themselves when acting their roles and about the difference their connection to Trek has made in their careers and their lives.

The issue also contains an interview with Prodigy co-creators The Hageman Brothers and co-executive producer and director Ben Hibon and the last interview the late Eddie Paskey gave. Most familiar to Trek fans as regular “background” crew member Lieutenant Leslie, Paskey appeared in 58 of The Original Series ’ 79 episodes—and in more roles than you may have realized. I never knew, for instance, that Paskey played the driver of the truck that hit and kills Edith Keeler in “The City on the Edge of Forever.”

Other pieces examine the first 100 years of the United Federation of Planets, the most memorable moments involving an Enterprise , and the biography of Captain Christopher Pike—in all his iterations—from a mostly “in-universe” perspective. Larry Nemecek takes a crack at answering fan-posed continuity conundrums while Chris Dows presents an article about the real-world science of fusion power.

The four original short stories in Star Trek Explorer issue 3 were all treats. Greg Cox spins a tale of the Botany Bay crew’s second attempt to take over the Enterprise , tightly plotted and neatly slotted in between the last scene of “Space Seed” and the ship’s arrival at Ceti Alpha V. And Lisa Klink delivers retro, pulpy sci-fi fun with “Kill Captain Proton!”

Then, the two stories in this issue’s digital supplement make timely complements to the recently “refit” Director’s Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture . Chris Dows’s “Cumulative Damages” gives his answer as to why Kirk accepted a promotion to the admiralty, and Peter Holmstrom’s “Explorers of the Storm” imagines a turbulent first meeting for Will Decker and Ilia that is also one of the Star Trek Phase II character Xon’s few appearances in licensed Star Trek fiction.

Star Trek Explorer issue 3 offers something for every fan, whether their interest is behind-the-scenes production information, detailed Trek trivia—or even coloring pages! Look for it on newsstands now, or check the Titan Comics website for availability and to subscribe.

Captain’s log.

A lot has changed in Star Trek over the past few years (not least the name of the Trek’s parent company: CBS? Viacom? ViacomCBS? Paramount? Paramount Global? I can’t keep up! And that’s without getting into CBS All Access and Paramount Plus… though happily the latter is now available in the UK), but it seems the more things change, the more they stay the same – or at least revisit the familiar. Before Star Trek: Discovery took the bold step of flinging itself into the far future, the show’s second season set the stage for further adventures of Captain Pike and the crew of the Enterprise in the recently launched Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, while Star Trek: Lower Decks has delighted in digging around in the dusty nooks and…

The Outstanding Okudas! Michael and Denise Okuda are considered royalty by Star Trek fans around the globe, and rightly so. While their contributions to Star Trek designs, logos, computer interfaces, and off-screen literature rank as their most notable achievements, the pair’s credits also encompass real-world emblems for NASA, as well an entertainment résumé featuring the hit projects For All Mankind, Space Force, Sully, Threshold, and many, many more. Of course, Star Trek fans are not the only people who appreciate the Okudas’ valuable influence on graphic design and popular culture. Michael and Denise have now been recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Scenic, Title & Graphic Artists at the 26th annual Art Directors Guild Awards. While the Okudas’ work speaks for itself, this prestigious award represents a much-deserved and well-publicized tip…

Classic Connections

What else do the U.S.S. Enterprise-D’s chief engineer and U.S.S. Discovery’s former head-of-security have in common? In The Next Generation thriller “The Mind’s Eye,” LeVar Burton’s Geordi La Forge is captured by Romulans and brainwashed in an attempt to ignite tensions between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. Similarly, Shazad Latif’s Ash Tyler was forced to deal with the realization that he was actually Voq, a surgically altered Klingon warrior intent on infiltrating Discovery. While Voq willingly submitted to the mental and physical changes, he ultimately chose to side with Starfleet in the Federation’s war against the Klingons.…

Kling-Entrées

Mealtimes have always been a vital element of human cultures, and that trend continued with various encounters with the Klingon Empire throughout Star Trek history. Who can forget Hoshi Sato’s run-in with targs (Star Trek: Enterprise’s “Sleeping Dogs”), the infamous feast that Captain Kirk’s crew shared with the Klingons aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise-A (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country), William T. Riker’s experience with gagh aboard the Bird-of-Prey I.K.S. Pagh (Star Trek: The Next Generation’s “A Matter of Honor”), or Kurn’s hilarious comments about burned, replicated bird meat (TNG’s “Sins of the Father”)?…

A Matter of Time

While social distancing in a responsible manner, many Star Trek actors have found themselves with extra time to dedicate to their personal pursuits and passions. A trio of Star Trek: Enterprise main cast members recently disclosed some meaningful projects they’ve been working on. Anthony Montgomery (Mayweather) has nearly completed his autobiography, which promises to be a deeply emotional book about the actor’s life and experiences. Meanwhile, Connor Trinneer (Trip) and Dominic Keating (Reed) have created the Shuttlepod podcast, which finds the two interviewing Enterprise cast and crew while providing commentary on Enterprise episodes.…

THE Q AND THE GRAY

There’s just no keeping a good intergalactic pest down. John de Lancie first played Q in the Star Trek: The Next Generation pilot, “Encounter at Farpoint,” way back in 1987. The character, an afterthought added to the proceedings by Gene Roddenberry to expand the premiere from one episode to two, developed into a formidable adversary for Captain Picard and company, and quickly emerged as a fan favorite. De Lancie portrayed Q brilliantly, imbuing the omnipotent being with menace, humor, and arrogance, as well as occasional flashes of compassion, self-doubt, and fear. His clashes with Picard were epic, often revealing details about the captain and his past that he’d suppressed or overlooked, but which shaped him as a man, a Starfleet officer, and mankind’s savior. And each Q episode promised fresh two-hander…

Jeri Ryan Talks Bittersweet Goodbye To Seven In ‘Picard’ Seasons 2 And 3 In New ‘Star Trek Explorer’

star trek explorer magazine #3

| April 12, 2022 | By: TrekMovie.com Staff 44 comments so far

The former official Star Trek Magazine has been relaunched Star Trek Explorer , and the second issue arrives today in the USA. With a focus on the Borg, the new mag includes an interview with Star Trek: Voyager’s Jeri Ryan who has returned in Picard .

Jeri Ryan on Seven’s journey in season 2 and goodbye in season 3

In the new Star Trek Explorer , Jeri Ryan talked about returning as Seven of Nine for all three seasons of Star Trek: Picard . With regards to what’s different in the current second season, Ryan spoke about the relationship with Raffi:

Personally, for Seven, you don’t often see in Star Trek a relationship that you’re dropped into the middle of. At the end of Season 1 you saw the very, very first glimpses of the beginnings of a relationship between Seven and Raffi. Then, when we pick it up in Season 2, we are well into this relationship, and it’s a relationship in the trenches. They are two very damaged people who have found each other, and now you’re in the relationship and having to figure out if they can heal themselves enough to actually be in a continuing relationship.

The actress also talked about Seven’s biggest arc in season two:

The most interesting character arc this season, for me, is she gets put on a course to really reconcile her Borg nature and human nature, and she gets to experience what life might have been like had she never been assimilated, if she’d just been human. So, this season for Seven is really about identity and embracing our humanity and self-acceptance.

Michelle Hurd as Raffi and Jeri Ryan as Seven in Picard season two

As for jumping right into shooting season 3 the day after wrapping season 2, Ryan described it as “surreal,” but also “exhausting,” especially for the crew because unlike herself and other actors they don’t get days off. When asked how she feels about the end of season three (which is also the end of the series) and if she will be sad or ready to let go of Seven, Ryan couldn’t choose:

I think probably a bit of both. This was so surprising, to get the opportunity to revisit this character on Picard . That is not something that I ever envisioned. It’s been really a treat to be able to do that and to continue her journey and to see her through all of this growth for these three seasons. So, yeah, it’ll be bittersweet to say goodbye to her again.

Star Trek Explorer #2 out now

Star Trek Explorer #2 is on sale today, Tuesday, April 12 in the USA (available in the UK on May 12, 2022). In addition to Jeri Ryan, the issue includes interviews with Star Trek: Picard’s new Borg Queen Annie Wersching and Picard / Strange New Worlds executive producer Akiva Goldsman. Keeping with the focus on the Collective the “Inside Trek” section gets assimilated, “The Definitive Guide” turns the spotlight on Star Trek: First Contact and both exclusive new short stories are about the Borg. Review: Action-Packed ‘Star Trek: Picard: Firewall’ Reveals Seven’s Compelling Quest For Identity

Obviously, we need to see how Picard S2 ends but that Stargazer show would be EXACTLY what the doctor ordered to make sure we and she don’t have to say goodbye to Seven.

I think a Stargazer show set after season 3 is the one thing I would like to see most out of all the announced and rumored projects. Season 3 should bring closure to Picard and the TNG cast, but a Stargazer show could continue the story of the 24th/25th century with the Picard cast. It’s the setting and time that really interests me the most.

An ongoing Stargazer show with Rios, Raffi, Seven, Juratti, Elnor, et al. could be a lot of fun. We got a taste of what it could be in the first episode of this season of Picard.

Absolutely. It makes too much sense. But would Seven even want to join Starfleet?

And then how would Juratti be onboard if she’s not in Starfleet either?

But with Captain Rios, XO Raffi, Ensign Elnor, and a few more crewmembers it would be a great show!

Just use the word “consultant” Works in my world…

Juratti is a Starfleet officer. She works for the Daystrum Institute which is an arm of Starfleet and where Bruce Maddox worked until…you know. He even wore a uniform when we saw him in Measure of a Man. For some reason she wasn’t wearing one but definitely a Starfleet officer.

As for Seven, that is a question would she want to be part of Starfleet? If she didn’t become part of it once Voyager got home, it seems weird she would want to be one twenty years later. But they can always make some excuse for her to be on the ship.

Book is on the Discovery and he’s just the Captain’s boyfriend. ;)

I just love the fact everyone is begging for a Stargazer show for a ship we saw for about 15 minutes lol. But it makes complete sense. It’s the kind of show fans probably wanted from Picard in the beginning. And it is such a cool ship. I think if fans push for it like they pushed for a Pike show, it will happen.

Everyone, including the producers of Picard, seem to want to see it continue in some form. I’ve always said personally as much as I loved Picard was part of Star Trek again it was more about wanting a show in the 25th century than anything. And who knows, but by the way season 3 sounds they may be setting that up!

We only saw the Stargazer in action for a few minutes, true, but we know the characters and their relationships that would be the heart of the show. I would be quite surprised if we don’t see at least some of these characters continuing on in a spinoff of Picard. Time will tell…

It doesn’t make sense

It’s my dream as well. But you said “rumored projects.” I didn’t think there were any actual rumors of a Stargazer series at this time. Just fan speculation that the set might have been constructed for longer than just a couple of seasons of Picard.

Am I mistaken?

My main concern is that Rios doesn’t seem like a strong enough lead. I like the character but I don’t see him leading a new show. I suppose Seven could rejoin Starfleet and serve as Stargazer’s Captain, but that seems a stretch.

I wouldn’t be against both a Stargazer show and a Seven/Fenris Rangers series. Or even straight-to-streaming films or something. There’s a lot of possibilities. I have a feeling we haven’t seen the last of any of the main cast past season three, or at least Seven and Rios in one form or another.

Straight to streaming movies in general would be a great move. Instead of trying to have mass blockbuster appeal, making smaller movies for the fans. There’s so many established characters they could pick from to make a mixed crew, as well as previous plots that could be given a (sort of) sequel.

Stargazer show makes the most sense. Plus, they built those gorgeous sets. Not to mention that I would gladly watch a Rios show.

Same same same. Rios is my favorite new character in all the new live action shows so far.

Yeah I like Rios too. And seeing him as Captain really fit him. I hope we see more of that in season 3 at least.

Just ditch the cigar.

Please! Sign me up for Star Trek:Stargazer! Not necessarily with Seven though… She might have guest appearances but I guess Rios will get some new crewmates just like SNW…

I think if the fans made as much noise about it as we did about Pike after season 2 of Discovery, we might get our wish.

WE WANT A STARGAZER SHOW ALEX KURTZMAN!!! MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!!

I’m doing my part!

Only if gets to fire up that damn cigar!!

I think he couldn’t light it in season 2 because of covid but they had to show it since it had already been written into episode 6 (and he gets thrown a lighter in episode 1). I assume season 3 will be the same with unlit cigars as 2 and 3 were shot together. I’d guess that cigars either won’t be shown at all or will be lit again if there is a spinoff.

Season 2 might be concluding the stories for some of the Picard cast members to make way for Seasons 3, which is unfortunate since they are so great. But I have a feeling there won’t be any talk of a Stargazer spinoff once we see the finale to season 2.

I’m not sure Jeri Ryan is watching the same season two the rest of us are. Seven barely has anything interesting to do this season, and the Seven/Raffi relationship is practically nonexistent.

Unless Jeri is thinking back to what happens in the few remaining episodes of Season 2?

I have a feeling that Rios and Seven will not be returning to the “original” timeline. Rios is falling for the Doctor, and Seven is enjoying not being Borg. Jurati will be a new Borg Queen – this is the most interesting Arc in this – will the Queen be Evil, or will Jurati tame?

I think Seven will return but without her borg implants. I wonder if Rios will return too but be motivated to leave Starfleet and just try to be a “hero” like the doctor (Seven mentioned in the first episode that La Sirena was being used for transporting medical supplies).

The article focused on Jeri Ryans role to play in seasons 2&3. We have not seen the last of her. And as for Seven being human, only as long as the timeline remains altered. Things should be back to normal by the end of the season.

When Picard has finished it’s run, it needs replacing with a voyager or DS9 show

Technically prodigy is the voyager follow up show

The amount of head canon and backstory that Jeri Ryan has been forced to create since day 1 of Picard which never gets to the screen is staggering.

She and Frakes needed to come up with the conceit that Seven was pretending to act natural and more human in season 1 because she was freaking out about how she couldn’t recognize her old character in the pages she was given.

Now she’s got this elaborate backstory for her relationship with Raffi which isn’t done justice onscreen, and her love of being fully human, something which Voyager would have happily put every other character into stasis in order to explore, is shown by a couple off-handed looks and remarks and a shot of her being relaxed and chatty at the gala last week (in an episode that wasn’t even 40 minutes long.)

I just don’t think these writers are doing this actress or this character justice.

As much as I am enjoying the show, you’re dead-on with your criticism.

“would have happily put every other character into stasis in order to explore,”

Absolutely true!

Hear hear. For me, we already said goodbye to Seven in Endgame. Picard’s producers and writers have committed atrocities to her Voyager character.

The Fenris Rangers need to be put in the bin too. Horrible concept from an ill thought out plot with Romulus’s destruction. Cheers, Charlatan Chabon.

Jeri seems to really understand Seven. I hope they give her some say in the writer’s room if she gets a spinoff.

I disagree wrt she is making an elaborate back story when it comes to her new relationship with Raffi. I just think she keeps in mind the audio book in between the seasons where Seven and Raffi are the main characters. I was impatient waiting for season 2 (Seven of Nine always been a fav of mine) and listened to the book, and the way she views their relationship very much fits when you keep what happened in the book in mind. It is a bit sad the show hasn’t put in much effort though, there was good banter and some character insights/”exploration” I think would had been great to see on screen. Overall though, I feel like Seven is severely under utilized this season. They give so little time to anything character-wise. I 100% agree with your last statement. I find it pretty damn disappointing tbh.

Would love to see season 3 complete the Stargazer character arc/plot – As much as I enjoyed TNG, I really don’t need to see a full cast reunion in Picard Season3 – seeing Riker, Troi and Data in Picard Season 1 was enough for me. I think Raffi, Seven, Laris, Rios, Jurati and Elnor are MUCH more interesting.

Love the new cast. Also happy to see the tng cast next season. It would be a missed opportunity not at least have to some of the tng cast in the final season so I’m really happy it worked out. I’m really enjoying this season so I’m sure I’ll enjoy season 3 as well.I trust that we’ll get a proper sendoff for the cast.

I still remember watching the Picard trailer for the first time and that very surreal moment seeing Seven in the same scene with Picard questioning him over his mission. It was just so unexpected. It wasn’t Crusher or Troi sitting there like you would expect, it was Seven of Nine! And it made me giddy for the show from that point on. Seven more than anyone became the character I was most excited to see and became my favorite in season one. It was a no-brainer she would be part of the cast in seasons 2 and 3.

That said they haven’t given her a lot to do in season 2 outside of fighting with Raffi mostly. But they haven’t given most of the cast anything to really do, so yeah. But I love Seven and hope the character still shows up in future shows and even films. I think a lot of us have our fingers crossed a Stargazer spin-off will happen. That’s the perfect way to continue this cast. I’m hoping (like many) they built that Stargazer set with the idea we are going to be seeing it beyond these two seasons and it would be great to see Seven on that ship as well!

Terry was defending the short episode length for 2.6 and I agree the episode shouldn’t be longer than it needs to. I also liked the episode overall and have been enjoying the season, but 7 was hardly in the episode so why not add some development for her and hear more about how she feels without borg implants instead of just a quick cut of her talking to people. Show me more of that. Why was she not really accepted in the 20 years after voyager? Just because a few implants? I’m having a hard time buying it – voyager crew accepted her and she was more borg like then. Picard’s crew accepted her. So who are the people who didn’t accept her for being an ex borg? Tell us more about what she’s been doing all this time and why her life turned out that way it has. I feel all we know about her in Picard is she’s a ranger, had a relationship with that villain from season 1, and developed an off screen relationship with raffi, and has Rios ship to be a ranger again.

Maybe there’s a real world reason she wasn’t in it that much, but I don’t feel like the show is really further developing her character so far, which is a shame because there was so much potential there and she’s such a great actress.

You would think if there was ANYONE they could’ve used to sneak into the party, it would’ve been Seven. And I agree, I don’t really buy this issue she hasn’t been accepted by everyone at this point. She hasn’t been a Borg for over 20 years and was instrumental in getting Voyager home. I can buy rogue A-holes wanting to capture her for her implants. But I don’t think anyone in Starfleet would be bothered by her being an ex-Borg. Picard was Locutus and a big reason why Wolf 359 went so badly for Starfleet and yet no one blamed him or ever treated him any differently over it. Yeah, there was Sisko, but that was a rare exception. I think focusing on her internal struggle still works but that’s all that is needed.

But they could be doing a lot more with her for sure. This is the first time we’ve actually seen Seven on Earth before. That was a BIG part of her backstory in Voyager, her reluctance to go back there given she left it when she was a kid and had little family. Maybe we learn something about that? Did she try to live on Earth when she came back? Maybe she didn’t feel comfortable and left? Or maybe she never stayed on it. It would be nice to get her insights on it since she’s now there, even if 400 years in the past. Something more than arguing with her (ex?) girlfriend every episode. It doesn’t have to be some huge arc, just more insight into the character if they can’t give her a direct story line.

I’d rather see Riker come back with a crew and integrate some of the cast on that ship.

Oh yeah I would LOVE to see Riker back on a weekly series again! It would also make sense to replace Picard with another iconic TNG character if Paramount is worried his loss would have a big effect on a spin off show. And bringing in Frakes would get the fanbase beyond excited if he returned full time to the franchise.

It’d be a crying shame to see Picard be the end of 7’s time in the Trek universe. There is so much to explore with this character that hasn’t been done. The hints of her complexity are now feeling more and more like bread crumbs. Same could be said for all the other characters too and yes the show is called Picard after all. Still why Star Trek has such a difficult time with older female characters is beyond me. Maybe she’ll have some role in Section 31. 7 is and will always be one of the most compelling, vexing and challenging female characters in all of science fiction. She has earned her own series.

Star trek magazine is reborn, as star trek explorer.

Titan Magazine's long-running Star Trek Magazine is getting a relaunch, with this October bringing us issue #1 of the new Star Trek Explorer . Check out the details of that first issue, and other Titan Publishing Star Trek releases, below:

Star Trek Explorer: The Official Magazine (ad)    is set to feature interviews, behind the scenes coverage, and new fiction content. Here's the blurb for the first issue:

STAR TREK EXPLORER THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE LAUNCHES A NEW ERA OF BELOVED SHOW! Featuring exclusive interviews with the cast and crew of Star Trek series as well as behind-the-scenes content you won't find anywhere else! This new magazine will also feature Star Trek exclusive fiction! Plus much more!

The covers for the first issue suggest an emphasis on interviews with the Discovery cast and crew for this issue, alongside a Kirk-focused "mini-magazine", a "Star Trek 101" explainer feature, and the promised "exclusive fiction". The previous Star Trek Magazine has before featured Star Trek Online based short stories, and excerpts form Star Trek novels; will this new format continue those sort of things, or maybe offer so some completely new short stories from different corners of the Trekverse? The only clue is that Disco -era Captain Pike is used to illustrate the new fiction tag on the cover (alongside "all-new magazine" and "new features" mind you).

The book will be offered in two covers, either the regular edition (ad)  featuring Burnham in an EV suit, of the Previews exclusive edition (ad) using Tim Anderson's TOS art from the 50 Artists 50 Years collection (ad) .

Star Trek Explorer #11 Exclusive cover featuring Seven of Nine

Star Trek Explorer #11 Exclusive Cover

Thanks to our friends at Titan Magazines, we have an exclusive excerpt of the short, "Confirmation Bias" by Michael Dismuke, below!

"Your vessel will be towed to Starbase G-6 where you'll be remanded into the custody of Starfleet Security. From there, a formal tribunal will be formed to decide your fate. If your planet has a judicial system, they have the right to provide for your legal defense. Of course, they might disavow you. I would, since you are such abject losers. If that happens, you'll be provided a replacement from our judge advocate general's office."

Liam Shaw, captain of the U.S.S. Titan -A, finished reading the two captives their rights.

The Usangi'I males sat in two separate but adjacent holding cells in the ship's brig. Blue-hued force fields prevented the duo of criminals from escaping. Shaw couldn't help but think that the portly prisoners, dressed in shiny orange uniforms, resembled tubby worms with the facial features of star-nosed moles – the kind he had caught as a kid back home in Illinois. In a universe shaped by the peculiarities of interstellar evolution, the faces of the Usangi'I captives looked as if a cosmic engineer had attached an otherworldly satellite dish to their snouts. Comprising thirty to forty fleshy, prehensile tendrils that splayed outward like a miniature constellation, their unique facial appendages were endowed with hyper-sensitive neural clusters. These clusters resembled minuscule antenna arrays, fine-tuned to intercept and interpret environmental signals.

The crew of the Titan- A would have preferred to learn about a new, sentient species in a more diplomatic manner. However, the actions of the Usangi'I had changed their status to that of prisoners in the brig rather than of guests on the bridge.

"I'll make sure my chief of security sends you a few holopics of the innards of of a Federation penal colony. I'd hate to keep you in suspense regarding your new digs." Captain Shaw punched a few more notes into the PADD, signed off on the formal charges, then handed it to his first officer. "How many hours until we arrive at G-6, Commander Hansen?"

Seven checked the PADD, added her own sign off, and handed it to one of the two stern-faced security officers that stood guard. "Twelve hours, sir," she responded, silently roiling at the fact that Captain Shaw refused to refer to her by her chosen name.

Though she had thrown off the shackles of the Borg Collective, she had spent approximately half of her life as Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix Zero One. Once liberated from the Borg, her crewmates aboard U.S.S. Voyager called her by the abbreviated moniker "Seven of Nine" — or just "Seven" — as did her associates in the Fenris Rangers. Shaw's insistence on referring to her by birth name, Annika Hansen, ran deeper than mere accuracy and formality, though the man was a model of procedural compliance. Over the course of weeks, the tonal inflections with which he uttered her name evolved from passive-aggressive jabs to more overt micro-aggressions.

"Captain," Seven asked as they exited the brig into the bustling corridor of the Neo-Constitution -class ship, "may we speak privately?"

"I don't see why not," he responded without making eye contact.

Within short order, Shaw and Seven regrouped to the starship's Observation Lounge. Shaw rounded the conference table and sat down opposite from where Seven stood. He didn't bother to offer a seat to his first officer. With a swipe of the hand, he activated the computer built into the surface of the table and tapped away without looking up. "What can I do for you, Commander Hansen?" He swiped left, making a few selections on the console.

Seven's lips pursed momentarily in a silent symphony of agitation as the captain summoned from the ship's database Vivaldi’s Concerto For Violin And Strings In F Minor. "I would like to address what transpired during our recent contact with the Usangi’I pirates, sir."

Shaw adjusted the volume of the music to his liking. "What exactly would you like me to address?" He sat back, his eyes set for the challenge. "We made first contract with a new species. We quickly determined hostile intent. We uncovered their ruse. Now they sit in the brig awaiting Starfleet justice. Not bad for this crew’s thirty-fifth mission. If you want to take the lead in writing the report, go right ahead."

"I’m not sure you want me to write that report." She offered a moment's hesitation. "Sir."

"Is that so?" The challenge had been accepted. He leaned forward, locking his hands together and resting his elbows on the table. "Pray tell."

You can read the complete short story in Star Trek Explorer #11 on sale April 9. Plus, there's an exclusive interview with Sonequa Martin-Green looking forward to Star Trek: Discovery 's fifth and final season; the Hagemans discuss the importance of Star Trek: Prodigy ; there’s more exclusive short fiction; your definitive guide to Star Trek: Picard Season 3 and much, much more!

Strange New Worlds Season 3 Director Becomes A Star Trek Redshirt In The Best Way

  • Director Jordan Canning shares a redshirt moment on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds set with Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck.
  • Exciting news for fans as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds receives a renewal for season 4 from Paramount+.
  • Jordan Canning's directorial work on Strange New Worlds includes episodes in seasons 2 and 3, showcasing her talent.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds director Jordan Canning jokingly became one of Star Trek 's infamous "redshirts" in a behind-the-scenes photo from season 3. Strange New Worlds season 3 is nearing the end of its production in Toronto, with Canning directing episode 8 of the hit Paramount+ show's third season. Excitingly, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has received a season 4 renewal from Paramount+, assuring even more voyages aboard the Starship Enterprise.

On her Instagram, Jordan Canning (@jjcanning) shared a behind-the-scenes photo of herself from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' USS Enterprise set between Rebecca Romijn, who plays Lt. Commander Una Chin-Riley AKA Number One, and Ethan Peck, who plays Science Officer Lt. Spock. Canning joked in her caption, "Always happy to be the redshirt between these two." Check out her post below:

Jordan Canning also directs Star Trek: Strange New World s season 3, episode 2, and she helmed the Vulcan comedy of manners, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 5, "Charades."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - Everything We Know

What is a redshirt in star trek, lt. hemmer is strange new worlds' most tragic redshirt..

A "redshirt" became infamous in Star Trek: The Original Series . The term refers to the ill-fated, red uniform-wearing security officers of the Starship Enterprise who were known for beaming down to a planet with Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) only to be killed horribly by whatever monster of the week the Starfleet Officers faced. Many redshirts had names and ranks, but their most common trait was they were disposable background characters who fueled the plot and suspense of that week's Star Trek episode . Star Trek: Strange New Worlds nodded to TOS' redshirts with the death of Lt. Hemmer (Bruce Horak) in season 1, episode 9, "All Those Who Wander."

Hemmer's demise was in contrast to most redshirts who usually died haplessly on Star Trek: The Original Series .

However, Hemmer died a noble death in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , sacrificing himself to the Gorn to save his friends and crew mates. Hemmer's demise was in contrast to most redshirts who usually died haplessly on Star Trek: The Original Series . Considering many of Strange New Worlds ' core characters like Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia), Ensign Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and Commander Pelia (Carol Kane) wear red shirts, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds isn't as bloodthirsty with their redshirts as Star Trek: The Original Series.
