Use the ones labeled ISO Version CD# Use setup in CD1. Then move movies from each CD into the games main folder for the campaign. Then use the Community Combined Patch its on moddb and the KA forums. Last you need is ka_ddraw_1_30

Can you put this link here: https://collectionchamber.blogspot.com/p/star-trek-klingon-academy.html .

Works, one of the toughest games to play and win at, you will learn or die, great game, and worth your time trying to figure it out!

Denacity 2023-04-08 -2 points

Can you upload .ISOs instead of the .BIN/.CUE files? It's such a weird format and it's hard to manage (both Windows and Steam OS support .ISO natively). The game doesnt have copy protection that needs this format. Thanks.

Nothing work and this is not update anymore, just trash nothing work...

i am having a problem where when i go to play the game the stars in the game blur and form lines all across my screen when i go to move, also text just add up ontop of its self its like it's just leaving all the frames on the screen at once. help.

bob 2022-02-17 -1 point

so i went to setup.exe to install the game, it said set up actions wasnt responding however the ka.exe file still appeared on my desktop. when i went to play the simulations tho the starfield in the background blurs together like lines. the game is unplayable how were other people able to get it running when we're all dealing with the same files here.

kirk 2022-02-16 -1 point

just to clarify its when i click on setup.exe and the game is trying to perform setup actions that it stops responding. and obviously i cant play the game if i cant install it.

Kirk 2022-02-16 0 point

When i go to open the setup.exe file it starts to "register fonts" but then says its unable to respond. help?

William 2022-01-24 2 points

I down-loaded the patches and the game but I am unable to play the missions as the game asks me to insert CD 2 to start. The simulator and training perform flawlessly. Thoughts??

nuch 2022-01-18 -1 point

I was only able to mount with clone drive. All seemed well except I cannot copy 2 files from disc 5 and 2 files from disc 6. Anyone else have that problem?

Calculon 2021-09-14 1 point

I had to look up what a .icd file was since that keeps popping up as been a virus from what others have said in the comments and this is a description I found; Executable program encrypted with SafeDisc, a disc copy prevention program for Windows games and other applications; typically saved along with an .EXE file which loads the protected ICD file. In order for a SafeDisc-encrypted program to run, the SafeDisc authenticator must verify the SafeDisc signature on the disc. After the disc has been verified the ICD file can be decrypted and run.

Calculon 2021-09-13 0 point

I've downloaded each iso and each one keeps saying; "Can't mount file, the disc image file is corrupted" I've re-downloaded and its the same issue.

admin 2021-09-09 0 point

Current disc images and DVD repack have been personally dumped from the physical copy of the game, if you get a virus alert, it's in the game itself.

Dino 2021-09-08 1 point

Are these ISO's still infected?

sharkboy 2021-08-14 0 point

Hi! I try to download and all dosen't working anymore.

CaptainTar 2021-07-21 1 point

Great game, but really tough, I will find the game and upload it, 2021-7-20

Lady Vixine 2021-03-07 0 point

Has anyone fixed this? I would love to play this again. I remember sneaking into the computer lab in high school to play it.

Stibbymicto 2020-12-23 -1 point

Can anyone confirm if the .ISO's are virus free now, since Kirk found one in the downloads back in september?

Jaeger 2020-10-12 1 point

Caractus, did you ever get the game to run full screen? What did you use to play?

Kirk 2020-09-02 1 point

This game worked a few months ago when I downloaded it. It used to be a "Start the game.bat" file now its a bunch of exe shit. I cant get the game to setup properly now, and even if I could there is a virus embedded in one of the files. Please change it back to the way the download was back in May or whatever.

Tenebrarius 2020-08-23 0 point

Hey Admins, sorry to say this but the KA.ICD file seems to have a Ymacco Trojan on it as very time I try to install or play the game, my antivirus picks that up.

admin 2020-05-25 4 points

The archive had a strange infected file indeed, please use the 6 ISO files now

Caractus 2019-08-07 2 points

Wow, what a find. I logged hundreds of hours on this game. One of the most underrated space sims in my experience, because of the use of capital ships and the tactics needed owing to their slow speed (the larger ones) and the use of cloaking tech among the various Klingon ships. The simulator mode is terrific. This version works like a charm in Win10 (so far). Never had any luck before with the 7 CD version, or the .iso patched version. Graphics were always glitchy. Play the campaign first -- it allows you to use those wins in the simulator, and you can watch Christopher Plummer chew through the scenery!

Setting and story [ ]

The game occurs just before the first Khitomer Accords as shown in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country . General Chang is Brigadier Kerla's predecessor the Military Advisor to Chancellor Lorak, Gorkon 's predecessor. Chang is also the lead instructor at the Klingon Defense Forces Elite Command Academy. Gorkon is Chang's predecessor as Chief of Staff.

The story starts with an attempted coup against the gravely ill then-Chancellor Lorak. In a heated battle above the Klingon homeworld , General Chang foils this attempt, injuring his eye in the process.

The game is divided into two campaigns: The first is a simulated war against the Federation . Starting with a blitzkrieg, the war moves deeper into Federation space, exploiting the weaknesses inherent in the Federation's greatest strength – diplomacy – which renders the enemy "a brittle unity" in Chang's eyes. The war ends at the heart of the Federation, General Chang uses humanity's "greatest scientific achievements" ( Project Genesis ) on Earth wiping out all life.

During breaks from the Academy, you are called to spy on treasonous elements with ties to the recent coup attempt against the Chancellor.

Upon graduation (a great honor, given the atrocious failure rate), Chancellor Lorak dies, and the worst civil war in the history of the Empire ensues, with radical ramifications to come...

Background information [ ]

  • Producer and script writer Rafael Hernandez noted the game operated differently than Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , " our ships fly slower, they have mass, inertia, they feel like capital ships. They have a variety of different systems that weren't available for 'Starfleet Academy.' For example, you can batter down an opponent's shields, and send over boarding parties to capture or cripple the other craft. You have the ability to supply power to your ship's systems in ways that you couldn't in 'Starfleet Academy'. " ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 1, Issue 8 , p. 84)
  • Regarding story development, Hernandez explained that their licensing restricted them to Star Trek: The Original Series and the first six films. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country seemed to focus the most on the Klingons, and it was Paramount that suggested a story featuring General Chang. ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 1, Issue 8 , p. 86)

star trek klingon academy

This was one of the best Star Trek games ever made! Heck, it needs a sequel starring J.G. Hertzler as Martok!

star trek klingon academy

I reviewed Klingon Academy on my Youtube Channel. Link below. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIfnGPwf1U8

star trek klingon academy

Yes, please! GOG, please add Klingon Academy. I agree with previous posts that it is the very best Starfleet game out there!

star trek klingon academy

Absolutely that game needs to be included. Starfleet Academy already is present. We need the other side now.

star trek klingon academy

Please. We need this Star Trek gem.

star trek klingon academy

youtu.be/67wQBZEJDlc?si=CSzZNZUbcR8xM0xF saw it here today

I have found it a second time here a screenshot i was able to take: i.ibb.co/SQPdxyR/WTF-IS-THIS.jpg

star trek klingon academy

I Remember getting the PC Gamer demo disk that this was on. I played the hell out it. That first time feeling of sending a torpedo through the saucer of an Excelsior class starship and leaving hole is priceless. Please add this!

the ships name was "It came to Earth" O.o

i found something interesting: a ship resembling the one from "Mission Farpoint" shooting COWS! i played against the aio and after defeatring it i warped to the sol system. when i got there i was outside the actual solar system but still near iot but suddenly i was attacked by something that resemble the alien beeing from the tng episode "Mission Farpoint" which launched ACTUAL Cows at me and which EACH launched cow i heard a "MOOOOOOOO!" does someone experienced that too or is it just me who witnessed that? because i googled it and NO ONE posted something about that "thing" O.o

star trek klingon academy

This game would probably be the most immersive Star Trek space combat sim if it would be re-released. Make it so! Qapla'!

star trek klingon academy

It is perhaps the game I want the most to get the GOG treatment. Loved the game, only got the chance to experience it on a demo disk - and I crave the opportunity to have the complete experience.

star trek klingon academy

This game was one of the best Star Trek games I ever played. I would love to be able to do it again.

star trek klingon academy

We need this one, too! Give it to us, pls.

star trek klingon academy

This is the best star trek game ever made, and it isn't close. What are our chances of getting it?

please add this , thank you

star trek klingon academy

I love that we got so many of the great Star Trek games added to GOG...But there's so much more to add, starting with this release. Klingon Academy was easily my favorite of the Trek Space Sims and for good reason. It's fun for casuals, but offers a lot of depth for fans. It's also one of the few rare examples being non-Federation, which has an added touch of fun (was always disappointing that Bridge Crew never got a Klingon Bridge Crew DLC). After this gem is added, I'll share what my next Star Trek desire of the Generations would be ;)

Probably the best Star Trek game that ever was, and I'm still waiting for it to be added to GOG

star trek klingon academy

Would love to play this again.

star trek klingon academy

It is one of the few good ship simulator games, and we get basically a prequel to the undiscovered country.

I'm not interest in the names of your fathers, or your family's lineage....What I am interested in.....is that you add this title

star trek klingon academy

would love to see it on GOG

star trek klingon academy

Please add asap!

This wish has been around since 2012. Please grant this wish myself and many others desperately want this game in your listings. Thankyou

star trek klingon academy

One of the BEST starship combat simulators, and easily the best Star Trek game out there ! Please, make Klingon Academy available on GOG, it will be an instant hit !

star trek klingon academy

Yes make this available please!

star trek klingon academy

würde ich sofort kaufen!!!

Please add this game, this would be an instant buy for me.

star trek klingon academy

Yes PLEASE!!!!

Please, go for it. Would even support a Kickstarter Campaign. Need it.

I never got to play this when it came out. I'd love the opportunity to do so!

Do this! And you will bring honour to you and your house!

Still waiting :P just do it!

star trek klingon academy

still holding out hope for this one. Hands down my favorite trek game.

Please add KA. A successful port to Win10 is out there but requires original discs. I am sure you pros at gog can make this happen!

I'd pay a 50bux for that! Seriously! I understand that it is a very old game actualy, running only on win98 (i have some mods/tweax/edited dlls that suport running it on 7/8/10) but it would be nice to have a game, just buy, install, run, no errors (even basic game crashes VERY common, on W98SE)

Honestly, release all Star Trek Games, so many of us fans wanting to play those...

star trek klingon academy

I'd buy this right away. For even like... 19.99! Or more!

Please, GOG, hear out prayers! Let us purchase this amazing game!

would buy it in instant if GoG releases it! :D

star trek klingon academy

Can we please get a GoG release for this game?

This is a MUST for a quality Star Trek collection! I still believe that it is the best ST game ever made. There's a bit of a learning curve, but it's well worth the investment. Qapla'!

I was able to get the original version of Klingon Academy running on Windows 10 at 2560x1440 with mods - if GOG were to release this game, I believe it will be easier to get it up and running on modern gaming PC's to contrast that of the recently released Bridge Commander and StarFleet Command 3.

star trek klingon academy

I dunno... I kinda gave up hope during that 6 year gap. That we got these six new games at all--with Armada and Armada 2 on the way--gives me hope that we might see Klingon Academy one day, too. If nothing else, it seems somewhat less impossible than it did just last month. Though the poor state of Bridge Commander and Starfleet Command 3 make me worry that it may not even be playable on modern PCs if GOG rereleases it.

I was amazzed to learn that Klingon Academy wasn't included in the new batch of Star Trek games released; it's been 6 years since Starfleet Academy was released on GOG but still no sign of its superior sequel. Instead, the recent batches have included titles that were clearly considered as inferior by the fans (I'm looking at you Away Team). Don't get me wrong I'm happy that ppl that love THAT and other games are finally able to get it digitally and working on modern systems, but I think Klingon Academy was a much more demanded and loved game and is puzzling that it still hans't come out.

A must have and a must buy.

star trek klingon academy

This is a tough one to run now. I have the physical copies, but seriously would love this digitally. I can't even get it running, but hopefully they can release a running copy. Such a good game and the return of some great characters.

That multiplayer!!!! <3

Yeah it would be great to have it.

Star Trek: Klingon Academy Review

It's an extremely ambitious simulation that provides plenty of original gameplay but fails to adequately refine its presentation.

By Desslock on May 17, 2006 at 3:09PM PDT

Aside from Particle Systems' Independence War, there hasn't been a well-crafted and enjoyable space-combat simulation that focuses on ships larger than X-wing fighters. Other capital-ship space simulations have either been too aspiring and failed to provide well-polished gameplay, or they've too closely emulated fighter sims and failed to provide an experience that logically reflects the more formidable size of the craft being simulated. Unfortunately, that trend continues with Star Trek Klingon Academy, an extremely ambitious simulation that provides plenty of original gameplay but fails to adequately refine its presentation.

Klingon Academy is the long-delayed sequel to Starfleet Academy, a capital-ship space sim that was maligned for essentially just being a remarkably cumbersome fighter sim. Although the Star Trek television series frequently featured large starships maneuvering almost leisurely while attacking enemies approaching from a variety of angles, Starfleet Academy required would-be Captain Kirks to swiftly track enemies and attack using solely forward-facing weapons, effectively transforming the dreadnoughts into bloated fighters. Game players have clamored for a simulation that more closely emulates the slower-paced strategic conflicts that have been depicted in the Star Trek shows, but it was questionable whether or not those battles could be accurately translated into a compelling computer-gaming experience, given gaming's more interactive nature. After all, those battles often unfolded preposterously slowly, given the apparent speed and weaponry of the combatants. Cast members had to issue verbal commands that were comprehensible to an audience, and ample time was allocated to witty retorts. Klingon Academy's developers had the unenviable task of trying to make the spacecraft perform more like the vessels in the series while, paradoxically, ensuring that the battles retained enough action to be interesting.

The developers opted to create a unique style of gameplay that is slower paced than in a typical space sim. Larger ships are still appropriately difficult to maneuver, but it's now easier to deploy a ship's side- or rear-firing weapons. Using a series of extensive keyboard-accessed menus, you can issue appropriate commands for each of the nine ships' command systems. Several key systems can also be individually controlled by abandoning the main viewscreen and pulling up separate command-station screens, permitting you to extensively micromanage craft performance. Not even Independence War provided such an intricate control system, which suitably reflects the complex nature of the enormous capital ships. The space-combat-simulation genre has finally produced a game that grants the same detailed level of ship control that military-flight-sim fans have enjoyed for years through hard-core simulations like Falcon 4.0.

In addition to creating a complex control system, Klingon Academy's developers have created a number of original tactical options. Instead of being forced to bludgeon enemy craft by firing round after round of phasers and photon torpedoes, you can immobilize ships with tractor beams and more exotic weaponry, or capture vessels by transporting marines on board. If you encounter overwhelming odds, you can steer your vehicle into planetary rings or near other interstellar phenomena to encumber your pursuers with various debilitating effects. Other than Derek Smart's problematic opus, Battlecruiser 3000, no space sim has purported to offer as many tactical features as Klingon Academy.

Unfortunately, in practice, control of your ship is too unmanageable to permit you to effectively use all of the potential battlefield options. Although more convenient hotkeys can be set for frequently chosen commands, the keyboard control system still often requires you to tap through a series of menus to issue relatively basic commands. Since you have to simultaneously maintain control of your ship's flight and watch the action onscreen while you're navigating menu options, it's far too easy to erroneously issue the wrong command with disastrous consequences. Inexplicably, the game's interface also prevents you from using a joystick's throttle or rudder function, or more than four joystick buttons, which needlessly complicates ship control. While you may be able to externally program your gaming peripherals to add additional functionality, the action still unfolds too quickly, and the game's artificial intelligence is too inadequate, to permit you to conveniently access all potentially available commands.

Furthermore, while the individual station screens provide the ability to directly tweak the performance of your ship's systems, it's difficult to continue to fly your ship while doing so, and handing helm command over to the computer usually just speeds your ship's destruction. While the developers attempted to compensate for these problems by providing options to further slow the speed of the game (either generally or just when you access the separate station screens), the pace of the game is still too fast. As a result, battles seem to devolve into cumbersome turning matches that are made even more annoying by the tendency of computer-controlled ships to collide with virtually any nearby ship or obstacle.

Collisions in Klingon Academy are extremely damaging, which is actually refreshing considering how inconsequential they are in some space sims, but the computer opponents seem incapable of navigating around other ships or objects. It's ridiculous how easy it is to destroy enemy ships by luring them near an asteroid belt and infuriating how similarly vulnerable your escort ships are when encountering comparable impediments. Since ships in the Star Trek series almost never meandered close enough to each other to collide, voluntarily or otherwise, it's ludicrous how Klingon Academy's computer-controlled vessels seem primarily motivated to play bumper cars with each other. While battles occasionally unfold in a satisfying manner similar to those depicted in the Star Trek movies or shows, they are just as likely to devolve into a farcical interstellar demolition derby.

Few quality Star Trek games have been developed, and even some of those, such as Starfleet Command, haven't really offered any interesting new fiction for fans of the series. Fortunately, in spite of its flaws, Klingon Academy is a great game for Star Trek fans. Klingon Academy is set immediately prior to Star Trek VI, and both Christopher Plummer (General Chang) and David Warner (Chancellor Gorkon) reprise their roles from that movie, while Michael Dorn (playing as a relative of his series alter ego, Worf) lends his distinctive voice to the mission briefings. Through its abundant and well-produced full-motion-video cutscenes and effective use of scripted sequences within missions (which can conveniently be skipped), Klingon Academy provides an entertaining examination of Klingon culture and motivations. The game also lets you replay just the video clips if you would like to peruse the entire tale at once. In addition, virtually every type of ship that appeared in the original TV series or the movies featuring the original cast reappears during the course of the game, including Gorn, Romulan, and Tholian vessels. Klingon Academy not only adapts its licensed setting relatively faithfully but also offers a plausible and entertaining contribution to Star Trek lore.

The 25-mission campaign eventually expands beyond the academy setting and into Klingon political intrigue. While the game doesn't include a mission editor, the multiplayer skirmish feature lets teams of players fly any of the ships deployed by the six races in the game in either small-scale battles or more strategic base-defense engagements. The campaign is also relatively lengthy, as most missions are divided into different stages, and individual starship battles tend to be drawn-out affairs. Devastating a Starfleet battle cruiser isn't quite as simple as incinerating a fragile TIE fighter.

Campaign mission goals are varied and interesting, and although there are some quirks in the mission scripting, the game rewards curious commanders who explore beyond established mission paths. To succeed, you can't just passively listen to the full-motion-video lectures about Klingon virtues - you have to learn to apply such values during the course of combat missions.

The game's sound and music effectively re-create the mood of the series, even though they don't sound identical to their series counterparts, and the thunderous collision effects are particularly distinctive. The graphics depict damage modeling extremely well, as components can be blown off and hulls shatter into pieces. But the interface graphics are rudimentary, and while ship textures look recognizable up close, they resemble fuzzy 2D bitmaps at greater distances, even at the highest graphic settings. Similarly, while there are some effective nebula effects, asteroid belts and most of the other space phenomena look obtrusively ugly. While most of the graphics appear simplistic compared with recent games in the genre, the engine still occasionally stutters to an unplayable crawl during even relatively small-scale battles.

The interface, pacing, and artificial intelligence make the game needlessly difficult, which is reflected by the fact that the easiest difficulty level is the game's default setting. Those problems are compounded by a poor tutorial and inaccessible manual, neither of which adequately teaches fundamental combat maneuvers, such as when to switch to a ship's gunnery chair or when to use tractor beams or marines. While it's definitely more satisfying and appropriate for you to discover a game's nuances by yourself, the developers should have done a better job describing typical battle tactics and ship operations.

Klingon Academy's developers created a space-combat simulation of unparalleled depth but failed to ensure that the basic control scheme, artificial intelligence, and flight models functioned adequately. The elation of discovering additional gameplay depth through acquiring an elite officer or being sent on a planetary bombardment mission is quickly dispersed when you witness unthreatened enemy vessels taking suicidal plunges into asteroid belts, like moths to a flame. Klingon Academy advances the genre by providing a number of original gameplay ideas, but its creativity is sabotaged by inadequate implementation.

Summary [ ]

The player is put through a theoretical training simulations in what is a war against the Federation , ending in an invasion of the Sol system and getting to track down the USS Enterprise .

After graduating from the academy General Chang calls on you to perform covert operations and also deal with the latest outbreak in civil war among the Klingon Empire , helping to get Gorkon declared Chancellor of the Klingon Empire.

Features Christopher Plummer and David Warner reprising their roles as General Chang and Gorkon in the FMV sequences, and Michael Dorn ( Worf ) playing Colonel Worf 's younger brother, Thok Mak .

Synopsis [ ]

Events take place just before The Undiscovered Country and Khitomer conspiracy in 2291 . The current Klingon chancellor is Lorak , a stable but ailing ruler, content with uneasy peace. Just prior to the events of the game, General Chang defeats a coup attempt in the empire by Kalnor , of the House of G'Iogh .

You play the role of a student of the Klingon Empire 's Elite Command Academy , instructed by General Chang . Chang believes that the Empire's true enemy is the United Federation of Planets , and that war between the two superpowers is inevitable. He instructs students on the strengths and weaknesses of the Federation's political system, it's captains and their starships.

In the event of war, the Klingon Empire plans a massive blitzkrieg offensive across the Federation neutral zone, bypassing obvious targets and striking deep behind Starfleet 's lines. He hopes to drive a wedge between member species of the Federation, by attacking specific species worlds; the Federation's political disunity could then be used to leverage members against each other.

Eventually, after graduating, you participate in a Klingon civil war. Various factions struggle for control of the Klingon Empire 's future policy. Among the characters you meet are the future Chancellors Gorkon and K'mpec , the latter of whom is just a lowly soldier of the empire at this time.

Description official descriptions

The sequel to Star Fleet Academy, Klingon Academy attempts to correct the faults of the previous game while allowing you to play as a member of the arch-nemesis of the Federation. You play Torlek, a young Klingon officer selected for Command Academy, where the finest naval officers are trained to be the most effective ship captains the Empire can produce. Your instructor and mentor is the famous General Chang, two years before the events that lead to a truce between the Federation and the Empire. Chang will test you and your classmen in a simulated campaign against the Federation, and should you succeed, you may be called for other services as well.

Although not completely detached from the arcade nature of the original game, both the agility of the lighter Klingon ships and the sluggish controls and more elaborate commands make this sequel seem more a starship simulator than a fighter simulator. The majority of the gameplay takes place in a 3-D environment simulating space. Everything from black holes to ice rings will hinder your travels, but most important are the enemy ships you will encounter. From traitorous Klingons to Federation starbases to cloaked Romulans, over forty different types of vessels can be encountered, and most can be played in multiplayer. Lighting effects and models that can be scorched and damage enhance the visual effects. Control is through either a keyboard/mouse or keyboard/joystick combination and certain ship functions can be automated to allow you to worry about immediate concerns. Ships sail past each other, in a cumbersome imitation of dogfighting (although one must not forget that most vessels have side and rear firing weapons in addition to the forward-firing main weapons).

In the single player game, you take Torlek through the Academy, following a creative campaign of Chang's that simulates a decisive assault on the Federation. Although simulated, failure results in dismissal, so there are no second chances. Eventually, you'll graduate and become embroiled in the political issues leading up to Star Trek VI. The between mission (and sometimes within mission) briefings occur through roughly 90 minutes worth of live action film, featuring both Christopher Plummer and David Warner returning to the roles they played in the movie.

In the multiplayer game, players can do a free-for-all or divide up into teams, each choosing a vessel from the various races available in the game. They then can duke it out in a number of environments, from near a sun to within an asteroid belt to even in the upper reaches of a planetary atmosphere. Each environment causes different effects on your ship and, subsequently, different hazards.

The Best Star Trek Action/Simulation

The Good This game is one of the best star trek action/simulators out there, First there was Star fleet academy which was good, But Klingon Academy is excellent!

1.The single player is very good, with lots of missions to do, There are 6 CD'S! in the game, Real movies with Christopher Plummer as General Chang!, and did i mention that you can destroy the enterprise in the game? There is also features like being able to go to different ship systems like, Sickbay, Engineering, Comm, etc, And Transporter rooms so you can board other ships while there shields are down!

2.The multiplayer is also very good, with huge space battles, Different levels such as Black holes!, Asteroid fields!, you can even hide in the rings of Saturn..how cool is that?, Being able to add cpu's is also fun, or just one on one with your friends, races such as , The Federation(Humans), Klingon's, Romulan's and more.. There also sites on the internet for mods, Adding new ships and races, like the Enterprise D and the Borg! The Damage modeling is also very good! The Bad The only thing i did not like about this game, was it crashed a bit, but the latest patch should fixed that.. You might often lose one of the six cd's, which was a bit frustrating! The Bottom Line A must buy for all, Good fun, Multiplayer is one of the best features...

Both Christopher Plummer and David Warner return to their roles from Star Trek VI: Gorkon and Change , respectively. Set two years before the events in that movie, the single player mode allows the characters to be developed a bit.

A demo for Star Trek: New Worlds is automatically played after installation, only to be finally released 4 years later.

star trek klingon academy

The following is an interview with Klingon Academy Designer Ron Hodge looking back at the development of Klingon Academy.

What is your earliest memory of Klingon Academy development?

My earliest memory is sitting down with Raphael after I was done with my normal QA shift (I hadn't been brought over officially at that point) and just brainstorming on what we thought would be fun to see in a game of this nature.

Were any of the SFA programming team involved with Klingon Academy?

Yes. Mark Murakami did much of the interface code for SFA and Robert Coultrip wrote the AI code for SFA.

What was the biggest problem the development team had to overcome apart from the reuse of the SFA engine?

Getting larger resolutions in the game.

Were you given any reasons why the project was being forced to reuse the SFA engine? Considering the less than warm welcome SFA got from the US press, why were they forcing the shaky foundation of SFA onto Klingon Academy?

The VP of Development at the time was being pressured from the top to cut costs wherever she could because (as always) Interplay was haemorrhaging money. Unfortunately, the VP of Development's only game industry experience was in marketing aspects so she did not realize the true gravity of such a decision.

What frustrated you personally during the development?

The generally poor communication between team members frustrated me to no end. This was due mostly to Raphael's decision to keep the various departments pretty much segregated from each other at the beginning. When problems due to lack of communication began to surface the team was too divided to really overcome such obstacles. Apart from Steve McLafferty and myself, there were few team members who interacted much on a personal level with any other portions of the team. It ended up creating something of an "us versus them" mentality that resulted in a ton of bitterness and ill feelings at the end.

It's pretty clear that Interplay management were against Klingon Academy, so I have to ask the question why did they bother?

It was said to me once "if you put a dog turd in a box and slapped the Star Trek logo on it it would sell." And given that Voyager had a multi-year run and Enterprise still isn't cancelled I'd believe it. :) Initially they were all for it. It was only when KA began to really drain the company coffers that were already being mismanaged and misspent that they turned against it.

For most of the development us fans were stuck with the fact that the game would be limited to a resolution of 640*480 and the reasons behind this were pretty well explained to the fans. Was the work to bring higher resolutions to Klingon Academy an ongoing goal during development or was more of a spur of the moment attempt to keep management and the fan base happy?

Blame Raphael for that. :) He, against orders from upper management, kept John P. working on it at least part time for the entire development.

When did it become clear that the multiplayer aspect of Klingon Academy would be death match only? And where there any other reasons apart from time as to why different types of multiplayer missions were not created?

It became clear when the solo-play game itself wasn't finished and Wombat's contract had already run out. This nasty situation developed when decisions in scheduling that were made for politically expedient reasons began to show how ill advised they were from a raw development aspect.

NOTE: The main reason you got more than just death match in SFA was that they ended up with about 9 months of EXTRA scripting time due to a major snafu with the compositing of the live action movie footage, all because somebody used orange tape to act as markers on the green screen sets. The orange used is one normally used in film/video effects, but unfortunately due to camera focus depths the color often bled, invading the flesh tones and the coloration of the TOS movie era uniforms. When the process was done automatically, bits of people's faces and uniforms disappeared and characters looked as if they had holes in them. The only way to avoid this was to clean the tape markers off of each frame of uncomposited video footage by hand. Every person that could be spared was put on frame cleaning duty but cleaning thousands and thousands of frames by hand blew out there schedule. SFA the game was done pretty much 9 months before the movies were done. In the interim the scripters were put to use coming up with a variety of multiplayer games (a couple of which were offshoots of scripters trying to show off their talents to get promoted to junior programming positions). All SFA fans who loved Net Profit et al. owe their thanks to a roll of chroma key orange gaffers tape.

Can you name 3 features that would have made the game better if the proper time was given?

Multi-player, the special weapons, and the Sha'kurians.

Many of the special weapons were intended to be far more grand looking than they are now. The Assault Phaser was intended to be something akin to the main gun of the SDF-1 from Macross or the wave-motion gun from Space Cruiser Yamato/Star Blazers, a super wide beam of energy that would devastate anything it hit, with the additional effects of draining the firing ship of power causing the lights to dim and the ship to cut thrust for several seconds. The AMFP was intended to behave more like a gargantuan flamethrower and be the bane of fighters (and thus a great weapon against the Shaks.) Many ships were supposed to carry fighters, not just Sha'kurians (though they were intended to have the best fighters of all.) The GDDS was supposed to look like a translucent sphere with lightning like arcs of energy crackling over its surface. As it is the engine really limited us as to what we could do. Manny did a great job with what we had, but they were always somewhat disappointing to me.

The Sha'kurians we approved for use so late by Paramount that they couldn't be worked into the story very well. I also wanted to see a couple of video hails from one (CGI of course). We also needed more time to develop squadron AI for the fighters. As it is they're annoying at worst. They were intended to be something to be feared.

In your opinion how lucky are the fans of Klingon Academy that the game ever made it out of the door?

Brian Christian spent at least one day every week for the last three or four months of development convincing Brian Fargo that Raphael was not the anti-Christ and that KA would ship if they didn't cancel it. Does that answer your question? :)

How far off is Klingon Academy from what was envisioned in the design document (More to the point do you still have a copy? Might be an interesting read)

KA is only about 50% of what the designs called for. However, that said, the designs were about 25% beyond what they should have been. This stemmed from Raphael's hope that he could convince them that we should just completely scrap the SFA engine and start from scratch, which was wishful thinking and in hindsight the source of a serious number of problems in the development.

Do you have any idea how well Klingon Academy sold?

Not well. Then again, KA came out after the genre of the space-sim was pretty much dead. Even critically acclaimed space-sims didn't make a ton of money if any because the market wasn't (and regrettably still isn't) there.

There are few games that I know of that require 6 CD's, do you know why the DVD version which was created never materialized in OEM or Retail channels? (My attempts to buy up some DVD copies for people who wanted this on KlingonAcademy.com have come to nothing, Interplay just give me contact info for Activision distribution then Activision point me back to Interplay :( )

The DVD version was only on the drawing board when I got canned so I don't know anything about it.

I get a lot of e-mail from people who want to buy the game but can't find it, I have to point them to eBay. In your opinion what are the chances of Klingon Academy being re-released in a bargain basement form?

Somewhere between zilch and nada. Interplay no longer has the ability to sell Star Trek games in any form and Activision wouldn't do it because KA didn't generate the sales.

Here we are, 2 and a half years after the game was released and it's still being modded, new scripts, new ships, new sounds/music, new weapons and even total conversions. All this comes from a small dedicated community, is it surprising to you that this is happening and did you ever expect the game to still to be going after all this time?

We released a game with an astonishing amount of depth all things considered, so I expected there to be a fan following for awhile, but I never imagined it would be 2 and a half years.

When was the last time you played Klingon Academy and do you have it currently installed? :)

Over a year ago and I do not have it installed.

Will we have to wait for hell to freeze over or longer before they toss out the source code to the community? We would be more than willing to give it a good home :)

Interplay is notoriously secretive about their code. I doubt seriously that it would ever be released.

Easter Eggs! I was told there were a few throughout the game that that were removed including the Klingon Font HUD. Can you remember what others there were and why they were removed? We Love easer eggs :)

We wanted the player to be able to go to the Sol system, target and destroy George and Gracie on Earth and have the Whale Probe show up and wipe the place out. But that never really made it past the construction of the Whale Probe model. Other than that, we didn't have the time to really do any sort of Easter Eggs.

Star Trek: Klingon Academy - PC

Product information, product description.

A bold follow-up to Starfleet Academy, Klingon Academy 's numerous graphical and gameplay enhancements make it much more than a sequel. Its graphics engine lets you obliterate the Empire's many foes in the most satisfying way. Think of the bit-by-bit starship destruction in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan : warp nacelles belch plasma after a fierce disrupter barrage; flaming decks are revealed after your torpedoes blast a Federation ship's disc in half. Your massive ship takes you to a variety of exotic combat environments, from icy planetary rings to charged nebula--even to the fiery corona of a star or the space/time bending horizon of a black hole. All the action is tied together by a devious plot that threatens the honor and survival of the Empire. The game is a vast improvement over Starfleet Academy and truly captures the look and feel of Star Trek 's most popular warrior race.

Video Game / Star Trek: Klingon Academy

A space combat simulator released in 2000, and the Spiritual Successor of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy .

Like its predecessor, the game is set in the early 2290s , though this time is structured as a direct prequel to the film Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , with Christopher Plummer and David Warner reprising their respective roles as General Chang and Chief of Staff (later Chancellor) Gorkon. Whereas Starfleet Academy was set entirely in the simulator room (aside from the very last mission) however, only the first half of Klingon Academy is actually set at the titular institution, with the second half of the storyline having the player character, Torlek fight alongside Chang in a three-way civil war between the newly-installed Gorkon, the traitorous Melkor, and Chang himself.

This game contains examples of:

  • All There in the Manual : Colonel Poktarl's biography describes how one of his earlier commanders made the near-fatal mistake of trying to evade a Romulan squadron by diving into a gas giant's atmosphere at full impulse while cloaked (which necessarily meant his shields were down). In the game, entering any kind of atmosphere while above one-quarter impulse will cause damage, and doing so with shields down will exacerbate the problem.
  • The final academy mission features what can only be described as General Chang's wet dream of an assault on Earth, which ends with the Klingons unleashing a modified Genesis Device which rips apart matter at the molecular level, without bothering with that tricky "rearranging it into life-sustaining patterns" stuff.
  • In the latter stages of the game you get an all-too-real example of this trope, when Melkor uses a supernova weapon on the star system that is responsible for the production of 80% of all the Klingon Empire's dilithium. This in turn sets up another example in the sixth film, as the only other place with enough dilithium to serve the Empire's needs is the moon of Praxis, which goes kablooie at the start of that film.
  • Beware the Nice Ones : Gorkon may be one of the more diplomatic and reasonably-minded members of the Klingon leadership from this era, but even he doesn't hesitate to order Melkor's entire family executed for the damage his attempted coup inflicted on the Empire. Note that even Gorkon's more militaristic predecessor didn't go this far after Melkor's elder brother attempted his own coup the previous year.
  • Big Bad : Melkor takes up this role after his brother is killed.
  • Bittersweet Ending : While the game ends with you successfully ending Melkor's attempted coup, the Empire has suffered massive infrastructure damage, is being forced to overmine the moon of Praxis to keep things up and running, and Torlek is assigned to a deep-space exploratory mission, after which he never sees Chang again.
  • Book Ends : The game starts with Chang stopping an attempted coup by Melkor's older brother Kalnor, and killing him in orbit of Qo'noS. The final mission has you taking on and destroying Melkor, also in orbit of Qo'noS.

  • In Starfleet Academy , Vanda M'Giia is the daughter of a prominent Andorian ambassador. Said ambassador is listed as a target for capture in one of Chang's missions involving an incursion into Andorian space.
  • Crazy Enough to Work : One of the academy missions has you having to take on a Federation battle station, something way out of the league of your K't'inga-class cruisers. Your first squadmate, K'Poraq derides the task as being completely impossible, while your second, Jaghjech suggests it might be doable with skillful use of your cloaking devices. At that point the third squadmate, K'Mpec speaks up and suggests hijacking a Starfleet vessel and carrying out a Wounded Gazelle Gambit that involves getting the battle station to lower its shields, then blowing up the ship. While the other two squadmates mock this idea, it turns out to be by far the best way to complete the mission.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance : Chang gives us an explanation for why he hates the Federation and it amounts to the fact he loathes democracy, multiculturalism, and peace. He states a proper empire should be ruled from the top down and conquer their foes rather than reach accords with them.
  • Dirty Coward : This describes Melkor to a tee. Firstly he dupes Chang's forces into capturing a starbase which is then set to self-destruct, and later on he lures Chang into an ambush in a nebula filled with Romulan forces.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty : Surprisingly enough, this is mostly averted by the instructors at the academy, who have a firm but very even-handed teaching style. Except for Poktarl, who takes great delight in belittling and insulting you, thus making it satisfying as hell when you end up handing him over to the Tholians to prevent them getting involved in Chang's simulated war with the Federation.
  • Early-Bird Cameo : Not only do we see Chang and Gorkon before the events of the sixth film, but one of the side characters is a young version of K'Mpec, the initial Klingon chancellor in Star Trek: The Next Generation . In a variant, a side-mission during the academy phase of the game has you taking Chang's experimental fire-while-cloaked Bird-of-Prey on a test run.
  • Enemy Mine : A variation on this becomes apparent in the Civil War arc; while Chang refuses to support Gorkon's ascension to Chancellor, he makes it clear that he hates Melkor and his actions more. General Chang : I will fight the House of G'Iogh, but I cannot in good conscience support you!
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good : Played with, since from the player's standpoint it's the Federation which is "evil"; the reason why Jaghjech and K'Poraq mock K'Mpec's idea to use a hijacked Starfleet ship in a "trojan horse" tactic is because a Klingon starbase would not lower its shields in such a situation, therefore they don't believe a Federation one would either. If the strategy is carried out however, the battle station does lower its shields, with fatal consequences for them.
  • Exact Words : In one cutscene, Chang asks the trainees what the weapons on a Klingon Bird-of-Prey are. K'Mpec begins rattling off the ship's technical specifications, only for Chang to cut him off and say that on a Klingon starship, everything is a weapon. K'Mpec actually takes this idea to heart and comes up with the aforementioned plan to take down a Federation battle station.
  • Eye Scream : Despite winning his duel with Kalnor and thus ending his attempted coup during the opening cutscene, Chang loses his left eye in the process.
  • Your main squadmate at the academy, Jaghjech decides to defect to Melkor's faction early in the conflict and unsuccessfully tries to persuade you to do the same.
  • An unwilling example is Brigadier K'Mak, an instructor at the academy, whose elder brother decides to join Melkor, forcing him to do so as well. This ends up having tragic consequences when K'Mak is chosen to set off the supernova weapon that destroys the system containing nearly all of the Empire's dilithium mines.
  • Foreshadowing : The game is basically a prequel to Star Trek VI , so naturally it features a ton of this, particularly in the ending with the mention of Praxis now being massively overmined, and Chang revealing his conspiracy to Torlek.
  • Foregone Conclusion : All of the game is building up to Chang's treason against Gorkon in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country .
  • Gaiden Game : Technically it's this to Starfleet Academy , as the two games are set simultaneously.
  • Game Mod : Like Star Trek: Armada , which was released just a few months earlier, this game developed a sizeable modding community.
  • General Ripper : Played with by General Chang, who wants nothing more than to obliterate the Federation and wipe the human race off the face of the galaxy, but is also smart enough to know that such a war can only take place when the circumstances are absolutely right — in other words, not when the Empire has an elderly, dying chancellor, or when it's involved in a civil war.
  • The Ghost : Chancellor Lorak, Gorkon's predecessor as the head of the Klingon government, is frequently mentioned in the first half of the game, but never seen in-person. Justifiable, since he's mentioned as being severely ill and barely able to rule at the start of the game.
  • Heel–Face Turn : Gunnery Officer Garlok, despite playing no vital role in the game, joins Chang's side when learning of Melkor's treachery by Torlek.
  • Honor Before Reason : Par for the course with the Klingons, but it gets taken to extremes when K'Mak sets off the supernova weapon in the Tal'Ihnor Gates system purely because his honor and duty to Melkor demand it. But averted in some respects. Chang's curriculum clearly emphasizes that a warrior's pride should not be synonymous for foolhardiness - there is no shame in calling for help when facing a fight you can't win alone, and a warrior should be willing to come to the aid of a brother in arms who needs assistance.
  • Identical Great-Uncle : Thok Mak, the brother of Colonel Worf from Star Trek VI . He doesn't actually appear in person, but is voiced by Michael Dorn and sounds identical to both his brother and his better-known Great-Nephew.
  • Insane Troll Logic : Chang mocks the Klingon Empire's Fantastic Racism (while engaging in a good deal of it himself) by stating that Captain Kirk is actually a Klingon. Becauee he's defeated the Klingons before, he can't possibly be "merely" human. He then gives a "Just Joking" defense and says humans used to be warriors but we fell from the path.
  • Klingon Promotion : Chang created the Academy to get around the consequences of this trope: invoking it too often results in ships being commanded by people skilled in dueling rather than shiphandling, so Chang created a school for advanced shiphandling skills to counter this problem. In the backstory, Poktarl got his first command this way - during a battle, after which he took command of the ship and won the fight.
  • Live-Action Cutscene : Like Starfleet Academy , this game features live-action cutscenes involving actual Star Trek actors.
  • Military Academy : Half the game takes place at an academy for prospective commanding officers that Chang founded. Success means instant promotion to Captain and one's own command. Failure means return to one's original posting, without any black marks on one's future prospects (one can always work up the ranks the hard way).
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished : In the prologue cutscene, Chang uses the Klingon rite of Blood Peace to bring a quick end to Kalnor's attempted coup, as fully defeating the House of G'Iogh would be far more costly to the Empire from a military standpoint. Not only does Chang end up losing an eye in the ensuing duel, but the failure to properly put down the House of G'Iogh ends up leading to Melkor's own coup attempt, which proves far more devastating to the Empire in the longer run.
  • Passed-Over Promotion : Jaghjech barely graduated, and as such did not receive a particularly impressive command upon graduation. He goes over to Melkor when Melkor promises to give him a squadron command.
  • Predecessor Villain : Melkor's older brother, Kalnor. His own coup attempt ends during the game's opening cutscene, with Chang beaming on-board his flagship and defeating him in one-on-one combat.
  • Propaganda Piece : The manual (written in-universe as if for a Klingon cadet) spares no effort to paint the Federation in a bad light. The Starfleet Prime Directive is called fraudulent and hypocritical. Also, instead of stating what actually happened during the events of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock , they accuse Admiral Kirk of killing Kruge's crew and stealing the Bird Of Prey so that the Federation can study the cloaking device.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure : Gorkon is as much this as he was in the sixth film. Unfortunately, Chang refuses to support him due to his desire to hold peace talks with the Federation. That said, Chang himself is very much this as well, knowing full well what a disaster it would be for Melkor to rule the Empire.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica : After playing a key role in the civil war against Melkor, Torlek's star is rising pretty high. Then Chang — supposedly because he's still smarting over the fact that Torlek forced him to ally with Gorkon, though implied to be actually because he doesn't want Torlek to get caught up in the conspiracy that will eventually come to fruition in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country — blocks Torlek's promotion to the High Command, and Torlek spends the rest of his career commanding an exploration/survey fleet searching unclaimed and unused star systems for resources to replace those that were lost in the system that Melkor destroyed.
  • Refuge in Audacity : Melkor, rather than seeking the Chancellorship of the Klingon Empire, decides to declare himself Emperor. While this seems like an insane political move to Chang, it frees him up from needing the support of the Klingon High Council and means he can rule directly if he defeats the Empire militarily.
  • Remember the New Guy? : Torlek, who becomes Chang's protegee, yet is never seen or mentioned in Star Trek VI . So, the dramatic tension there lies in whether he survives the events of the game or not. He does, but Chang pulles the aforementioned Reassigned to Antarctica ostensibly to punish his pupil, but more likely to prvent Torlek from getting caught up in what will become the Khitomer Conspiracy. This thus explains why we never saw Torlek during the final TOS film.
  • Sequel Escalation : Even if it's not a true sequel to Starfleet Academy per se, it really ramps up the scale of things compared to its predecessor.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial : The entry on Maltz in the library computer, as well as the manual's entry on the B'rel Bird of Prey (Kruge's ship), go out of their way to insist that Maltz died with the rest of Kruge's crew on Genesis. He absolutely did not get captured by the Federation and then assist them in translating the Klingon language.
  • Theme Naming : As befitting a far-flung conflict, many systems in the simulated Klingon/Federation war are named after World War I and World War II personages and battle locations (such as Eisenhower, Ypres, and Somme).
  • Throw It In! : An in universe example as the instruction manual is written in-universe style. The assumption being that it was likely that Federation spies were also reading this manual, the Klingons are so badass, they include in the introduction a special message for Federation spies along with guidelines for converting Klingon dates to Federation (Julian/Gregorian calendar) years.
  • Ungrateful Bastard : In the third-last mission you save Chang's life by calling on Gorkon's aid to save him from an ambush at the hands of Melkor and the Romulans. Except that in doing so, you make Chang honor-bound to serve Gorkon and allow his faction to be absorbed. Chang thanks you for this by throwing you off his task force and assigning you to an unimportant mission on the fringes of the Empire... though it actually turns out to be fortunate for all involved, as in doing so you find out Melkor's next plan.
  • Unwinnable Training Simulation : During the first half of the game in the simulated campaign; after entering their space in order to retrieve an Andorian embassador, the Tholians react aggressively, forcing the cadets to deter the strength of the Tholian Strike Group and by all means prevent a war. You could choose to turn in the commanding officer (Poktarl) responsible for leading the violation of the Tholian territory or otherwise engage the Tholian Strike Group. When Torlek goes to seek justice for this mission, Chang lets him know that the mission turned out to be a Secret Test of Character as it puts a Klingon's duty and honor in direct conflict and make them see which they would sacrifice first in such a conflict. Chang appears friendlier when you question the injustice of the situation; otherwise he would let Torlek believe he had failed...
  • We ARE Struggling Together : Chang and Gorkon can't agree on anything, which is why the Empire is badly divided against Melkor.
  • We Used to Be Friends : Torlek has a moment of this with his former squadmate Jaghjech in the final mission, which quickly turns into Roaring Rampage of Revenge and ends with Jaghjech being blown into atoms for his betrayal.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist : The game expands on Chang's depiction in The Undiscovered Country and gives a better, more detailed look at his motives; basically, he's an honorable conservative who genuinely fears Gorkon's moderate policies will lead their race to their doom.
  • What Happened to the Mouse? : K'Mpec abruptly disappears without any explanation late in the academy segment of the game. Presumably he screwed up, got kicked out, and figured he was better-suited to politics than starship command, eventually leading to his becoming chancellor.
  • What the Hell, Hero? : General Chang calls you out and demotes you for bringing in Chancellor Gorkon's forces as reinforcements during the battle in the Tal'Ihnor Nebula against the Romulans and letting Melkor escape, forcing Chang to pledge his loyalty to Gorkon and abandon his opposition to his policies.
  • You Are in Command Now : Part of K'Mak's backstory. During his initial term of service aboard the ram’a’, K’mak served with distinction, earning a position as Forward Gunner. In the midst of the tegh poqet Crisis in 1655, an explosion killed the captain and first officer of the ram’a’ and sealed off the bridge from the rest of the ship during the major engagement of the conflict. K’mak, being the most senior officer on the bridge seized command while the second officer, who had been in engineering at the time, and a damage control party attempted to cut through the blockage. By the time the second officer made it on the bridge, K’mak had already crippled the Tholian Cruiser that had engaged them. K’mak dutifully relinquished command to his superior and returned to his post as gunner without even attempting a Klingon Promotion . After the battle the second officer recommended that K’mak be awarded the Token of the Mek’leth, one of the highest awards given to a junior grade officer. It was this recommendation that brought the young warrior to the attention of General Chang’s Academy Recruiters.

Honor, courage, glory, no fear of death ... these are the prerequisites to being in General Chang's elite academy for prospective Klingon ship commanders. If you prove to him that you possess these characteristics as well as the ability to make quick decisions and push your limits, maybe, just maybe, you will be allowed to join his attack fleet against the Federation!

Using a "bridge captain" perspective, you participate in some simulator missions and then real encounters with many variations of enemy ships, mainly Federation vessels. As the ship's captain, you command every station on the ship at a whim. You have access to weapons, engineering, security, communications, helm and just about everything else. Also, if you wish to pursue more of the fighting elements of the game and not worry about certain details, you can set macros that distribute power and regulate ship functions automatically.

Forty new ships await destruction because they have either betrayed or are enemies of the Klingon empire. Races in the game include those of the Federation, Romulan, Tholian, Gorin and Sha' Kurian, a new race in the Star Trek universe. Each of the ships has detailed schematics and weapon systems as well as new technologies like the Tholian power-web.

Battles take place in a range of areas such as the corona of a star where things really start to get hot! Perhaps you'll use the cover of a planet to elude your enemies or maybe use a black hole for cover and have to deal with its insane physics and gravity. And should you enter an asteroid belt, you'll learn the true meaning of rock and roll! When battling in these areas, you'll see the glory of your weapons tearing through an enemy ship. You can rip off the hull or hit the warp-drive causing plasma to leak heavily from the ship's aft region.

Since the story is a continuation of that from the movie Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, you'll see Christopher Plummer reprise his roll as General Chang and David Warner as Chancellor Gorkon. Also, catch the cameo voiceover by the most famous of all Klingons, Michael Dorn, but not as Worf!

In Star Trek: Klingon Academy, the fate of the empire depends on brave warriors such as you, so make it proud and die with honor!

For all of the advances the software and hardware, why can't Star Trek games be more simple? Why does the player have to do all the work? I was supposedly the captain of a Klingon vessel through a series of simulations and missions. To issue orders to my crew, I had to use the VOS, which stands for "verbal order system."

There is nothing verbal about this verbal order system! Nine menus line the bottom of the screen with headings like "Engineer," "Helm," "Comm," and "Science." Wait, this sounds like a Federation starship, doesn't it?

So to issue a "verbal" command, the player has to press a corresponding number key, which brings up a menu, like "2" for "Helm." Then a series of choices faces the captain, like "Warp Out-System," "Warp In-System," "Warp to Target," "Impulse," and a couple of others. So those take another number key. And so on. And so on.

To warp somewhere, the captain presses four keys in sequence. Never mind that as captain, I'm handling a joystick to fly the ship as well as manning the weapons array. I thought I was a captain, for god sakes! That's what the crew is for!

I saw one joystick once in one Star Trek movie. Guess which one and who was the pilot and win a tribble! (answer below, but don't expect that tribble) I don't believe joysticks are standard issue in the Federation or the Klingon Empire.

Pressing keys, issuing "commands," flying the ship, shooting the weapons is nearly impossible. Whose crinkly cranium do I need to bash to get some help around here? Never has the captain had to do so much.

While voice-recognition isn't quite right for dictating the great American novel or even a decent review, why can't it be used for words like "shields," "all ahead full," "cloak," or other Star Trek universe vernacular?

Suspend your disbelief that the game isn't quite accurate-or as accurate as some game can be to a fictional universe-and the game can be fun, but extremely challenging. Beside the incredibly obtuse VOS, the "Cadet Handbook" for Klingon U is 288 pages! I'm sorry to say I never read the whole thing. Guess I will fail my midterm.

On the plus side, the graphics are generally strong, the sound effects very good, and the plot compelling.

In particular, the back story is a prequel from the cinematic movie, "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country." Starring Christopher Plummer as General Chang, the little movies almost make the game play worthwhile. Almost.

I guess all the money it took to get Plummer to reprise his role was taken from making the game playable.

And here's a little note of humor: Even though I had to do the work of an entire crew, on one mission I couldn't choose the order of attacking three Federation vessels. I was cloaked and wanted to score some hits on the warship that I knew could do me some serious damage. But the computer would not let me target it! I was forced to start with some tiny ships that posed no threat at all. By the time the computer lets you target your only real opposition, they have their shields up and are coming at your uncloaked (as in you have to fire uncloaked) butt full tilt. How much easier it would have been to just pop the warship first and then mop up the smaller ones later. So there I was commanding the entire ship, but not able to pick my order of targets.

I don't hate Star Trek: Klingon Academy. I don't like it either. Despite some promising features, the game is wholly too complicated and does not honor the great Klingon Empire.

Basic Strategies

Overall Basic Strategies:

  • Do not even think about playing this game without going through the game's guide first. Even though it is big, it really covers everything. Read up on the VOS, piloting, and the meaning of each VOS. Everything else is there as a reference to use while you are fighting.
  • You may find yourself having a hard time in the beginning; don't feel upset. Just try to get through it and even if you miss a couple of objectives play through it again in skirmish until you get it right.
  • Memorize your Helm and Engineering VOS commands - you will use these the most.
  • Even if you have the 1.01 patch you may still run into some bugs. Report them at http://www.interplay.com

Klingon Ship Piloting Basics:

  • Always pay attention to the briefing and debreifing - they will eventually tell you when you are getting a new ship and what it is. Adjust your piloting skills accordingly.
  • Your best fighting tactic is going to be to hit, cloak, and move - then repeat.
  • Your escorts are STUPID . Avoid entering celestial objects with them because they will more than liekely die in the process.
  • When you have to capture a ship, you can use the VOS 3-3-3 to order all escorts to help out. However, they feel that the ship has to lose ALL shields before beaming troops over. Sometimes, however, they get it right. In order to avoid their zeal losing your objective use 3-3-6 to order them to cease fire when enemy hull damage drops to 20.
  • Your shields will automatically drop and raise when you beam an away team.
  • If the enemy ship has 10 defenders, send 25 (i.e. 30 with 5 on standby) in order to capture it or else you'll be sending them in like 5-5-5 or whatever and this gives the crew time to recoup.
  • UNDOCUMENTED BUG (GOOD ONE!) There is a wonderful little bug that works in your favor; whenever you ALT+TAB the game time will stop BUT the ship's (and your escort's!) recovery system will still work so you will heal while everything else stops. I've found this works best when you have set your Damage Control to max. I've also noticed that some enemy ships will also recover so keeping your Damage Control to max ensures that you recoup faster. An enemy ship that has an away team on it will also recoup so be careful when you do it.
  • Read the book's guide on Celestial Objects and learn to use them in order to camuflage your ship and to help aid in destroying enemies: i.e. you're getting followed by a large set of enemies - lure them to an asteroid belt and let the rocks destroy them.
  • I personally have beaten the game using nothing but pilot view and auto firing. However, that's also because I knew where my ship could fire from (aft, etc. etc.). If you're unsure of where your ship fires or just prefer more control use the Gunnery mode - but practice!!! It can be extremely difficult!

Undocumented Bug Section:

  • Apart from the bug listed above, there are also a couple of bugs that show up in this version; most of these deal with mission completion.
  • In mission 9 there is a serious bug that will prohibit the mission from completing. Full details are listed in its page.
  • There is a bug in the game that will display your planetary target even if you are all the way on the other side of the planet. If you are shooting at the planetary target but no damage is coming off (approx. 10 points per shot) you're not there. Rotate around the planet until you find it. This will be a major pain in the butt later on.
  • Even if you completed the objectives for a section do not exit imemdiately. Wait a couple of minutes to see if you get contacted by any superiors; if you exit before they contact you the mission may either end or get stuck.

On to the First Mission!

Description of STAR TREK: KLINGON ACADEMY

Star Trek Klingon Academy is a space flight simulator based on the universe of Star Trek movies and series. The action of the game takes place between the fifth and sixth installments of the Captain Kirk movie series and is presented in production through a series of cutscenes. The story is an interesting addition to the storyline that every Star Trek fan knows from movie screens and televisions. The gameplay itself is highly tactical and is based on flying a spaceship and extensive combat with many dangerous opponents. Out of thirty missions, most of them are all about reaching their destination quickly and destroying or capturing enemy targets. The player can control about forty warships equipped with technologies known from the series, such as a WARP drive or a masking shield. The gameplay is exciting, the developers have pleasantly set the accents on both the simulator and the more dexterity side of the game, which makes the game very enjoyable, but there are also many challenges. Every Star Trek fan will surely be pleased.

Screen Rant

I’m glad john colicos changed his mind about returning as star trek: ds9's klingon.

Star Trek: DS9 pulled off an impressive classic Klingon reunion in "Blood Oath", but TOS actor John Colicos almost turned it down due to the script.

  • John Colicos almost didn't return as Kor in DS9, but thankfully changed his mind, leading to a classic Klingon reunion.
  • The handling of Kor's character in "Blood Oath" caused Colicos to object, fearing a comic portrayal of the iconic Klingon.
  • Colicos insisted on Kor surviving in DS9, ensuring the historic classic Klingon reunion felt complete and true to the original series.

Star Trek: The Original Series actor John Colicos nearly didn't return to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , but he thankfully changed his mind, leading to future appearances by the legendary Klingon, Kor. John Colicos holds the distinction of being the actor who originated the Klingons in Star Trek , appearing as the main antagonist in TOS season 1, episode 27, "Errand of Mercy". Kor made such an impression on the TOS cast and crew that Gene Roddenberry wanted to make him a recurring character. Unfortunately, scheduling commitments meant that Colicos was unable to reprise the role of Kor for "The Trouble with Tribbles" and "Day of the Dove" .

With John Colicos unavailable for future Star Trek: The Original Series episodes, the characters of Koloth (William Campbell) and Kang (Michael Ansara) were created for "The Trouble with Tribbles" and "Day of the Dove", respectively. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 2, episode 19, "Blood Oath" brought back all three TOS Klingons, teaming them with Lt. Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) . "Blood Oath" is a highly regarded episode of DS9 season 2, but it could have been very different if John Colicos had decided not to return as Klingon Dahar Master, Kor .

I Didn’t Know Where Roddenberry Got The Name Klingon In Star Trek Until Now

John colicos didn’t want to become a “buffoon” in star trek: ds9, "... you're making a travesty of what has become a cult figure".

When John Colicos received the script for "Blood Oath", he completely disagreed with the handling of the character of Kor . In the original script, Peter Allan Fields wrote Kor as a Klingon version of William Shakespeare's Falstaff character. A boastful knight and something of a drunk, Falstaff is largely a comic character in the three Shakespeare plays in which he appears. John Colicos objected to a similarly comic and bufoonish take on Kor , telling Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - The Official Poster Magazine issue 8 that he told DS9 producer Michael Piller:

"I don't really want to play this character, because it's totally contradictory to the original Kor. I have a huge following from the original one, and if he becomes just a buffoon, then I'd honestly rather not do it."

Michael Piller assuaged John Colicos' fears somewhat by telling him that Kor would become a hero by the end of "Blood Oath". The deal was finally sealed when it was decided that, out of the three TOS Klingons in DS9 , Kor would survive his Star Trek: Deep Space Nine appearance, living to tell the tales of Kang and Koloth's heroic deaths . Indeed, John Colicos was adamant that Kor should not die in "Blood Oath", telling Star Trek Monthly issue 55 that:

"I said I didn't want to be killed off, otherwise I'd have preferred just to be remembered as the initial Commander Kor that people saw in the original series..."

Star Trek: DS9’s Classic Klingon Reunion Wouldn’t Work Without John Colicos

Due to the prosthetic changes between Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , it's not immediately apparent that it's the same Kor, Kang, and Koloth in "Blood Oath". However, it becomes clear very quickly that this is a historic classic Klingon reunion on DS9 , which is a big deal. A TOS Klingon reunion without John Colicos, the actor who originated the Klingons on Star Trek , would have felt incomplete .

Michael Ansara later reprised the role of a younger Kang in Star Trek: Voyager season 3, episode 2, "Flashback".

If John Colicos had turned down the chance to return as Kor from Star Trek: The Original Series , then Peter Allan Fields would have to have created a new Klingon to join Kang and Koloth's quest. The story would still have made for a classic Klingon episode , but any Kor replacement would have felt like an impostor. It's lucky then that John Colicos was persuaded to reprise the role of Kor in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , where he clocked up two more appearances after "Blood Oath".

All episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine are available to stream on Paramount+.

DS9 was created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller, and stars Avery Brooks, René Auberjonois, Terry Farrell, and Cirroc Lofton. This particular series follows a group of individuals in a space station near a planet called Bajor.

Star Trek: The Original Series

Star Trek: The Original Series follows the exploits of the crew of the USS Enterprise. On a five-year mission to explore uncharted space, Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) must trust his crew - Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (Forest DeKelley), Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (James Doohan), Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), Chekov (Walter Koenig) and Sulu (George Takei) - with his life. Facing previously undiscovered life forms and civilizations and representing humanity among the stars on behalf of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets, the Enterprise regularly comes up against impossible odds and diplomatic dilemmas.

Klingon Academy was a really good game. KA is my favorite Trek game of all time, if you haven't played it, it plays a lot like the old X-Wing/X-Wing Alliance games, it has joystick support which is pretty rare for Trek games. It also has way more buttons and sliders to control your ship than Bridge Commander does.
