Star Trek: The Mirror War – Troi – Comic Review

Lee Thacker

During the Star Trek: The Mirror War  series, there have been several cutaway issues, focusing upon individual characters – Data , Geordi LaForge , Benjamin Sisko , and now Deanna Troi. Each of these have given readers a welcome pause from the main action, as well as providing us with valuable insight into the motivations and inner workings of each one of these characters.

Whereas in the ‘Prime Universe’ our Deanna Troi was known for being ship’s counsellor, using her natural telepathic gifts to help with maintaining the psychological wellbeing of her crewmates, the ‘Mirror Universe’ version seeks to use them only to further her lust for power and glory. Installed as the Inquisitor aboard the ISS Enterprise-D, this Troi has proven herself to be a worthy adversary and a master manipulator, with her skills giving her an advantage.

In Star Trek: The Mirror War – Troi , writer Marieke Nijkamp takes us back into Troi’s past as Administrator on her home world, Betazed. Thirsting for more control and authority, a visit by the ISS Stargazer gives her the ideal opportunity not just to wipe out troublesome insurrectionist forces who are defying her will, but also to inveigle her way onto the vessel. In doing so, Troi can use this as a platform for advancing her own ambitions, by taking her far beyond the confines of her planet, and into the wider cosmos.

Nijkamp takes his opportunity to show us what a formidable adversary this iteration of Troi can be, appealing to the ego and arrogance of Picard, saying precisely what he wants to hear and subtly pulling his strings, while planting the seeds of showing how invaluable an asset she could make herself, all the while acting out of pure self-interest. Unlike in The Next Generation , where that Troi was a carer and empath, here we have a woman who is completely cold and ruthless, truly a smiling assassin.

Showing us takes on familiar faces where we see what could have happened if they had taken a dark path is a great way of appreciating the versions we know and love. Seeing Troi as a callous, power-hungry bitch is a shock to the system, even moreso than in the other issues of the Mirror War series, as her desire for conquest and control has only been hinted at, or shown very lightly in comparison to what we get here. By the end of this issue, there can be absolutely no doubt as to how skilfully Troi has managed to play a long game, making sure everyone underestimates her.

READ MORE: Tilt: Six Tales – Graphic Novel Review

The artwork by Megan Levens does a great job of capturing everyone’s likenesses, and it also manages to be a cut above what we have seen elsewhere in the series. One of the worst failings has been to show the tyrannical Picard as being just a musclebound, angry, shouting thug, rather than giving him some texture and variety. Here, Levens has made him seem less caricatured and one-dimensional, making him appear a far more credible figure in the process. More of Levens’ work would be very welcome indeed.

Star Trek: The Mirror War – Troi  is a truly superlative effort, working both as a standalone issue, and adding more depth and context to the overarching story.

Star Trek: The Mirror War – Troi is out now from IDW Publishing .

Biography [ ]

Typhuss999/captain parmenter continuity [ ], early life and intendant of betazed [ ].

Deanna Troi was born on Betazed circa 2336. Deanna grew up in the Fifth House of Betazed, but after being told her father's identity in 2354, she left Betazed. She nevertheless became Intendant of Betazed in 2359, and later Intendant of Sintak Nor , a Alliance space station orbiting Betazed.

She was particularly fond of her former slave, William T. Riker . Deanna allowed him to have a ship and a crew, which he used to commit acts of piracy in order to collect tribute for her. Deanna was horrified when Riker turned against her and joined the Terran Rebellion in 2364, along with 200 of her other slaves, including Geordi La Forge and Beverly Crusher , along with her son, Wesley . (Captain Parmenter storyline)

By 2369, Troi had become the Imzadi of Worf, and had taken to wearing full Klingon armor. During that year, Troi visited the Intendant of Sol, B'Elanna Torres , who gave Troi a present in the form of servant girl Keiko Ishikawa. Also in 2369, Troi and Worf were visited by Bajor 's Intendant , Kira Nerys , and her associate, Annika Hansen .

Deanna became particularly fond of Typhuss James Halliwell , Intendant Kira's lover, after the rebellion of William Riker. Deanna became attracted to Typhuss, Deanna tried several times to seduce Typhuss so that he would become her lover but Typhuss refused all of Troi's advances. But Typhuss preferred to be Intendant Kira's lover and not Troi's lover, this made Deanna very angry. (Typhuss999 storyline; Captain Parmenter storyline)

Troi began setting her sights on soon living on planet Betazed II. Troi learned that a man called Tomas was a harasser of women, so she had him killed for that.

By stardate 47104.0, Troi decided that she was beginning to look similar in attire to Kira, so she took to wearing a long blue dress.

Galactic Commonwealth [ ]

Later in 2378 Deanna joined the Galactic Commonwealth and served on the Enterprise as security chief under Captain Jean-Luc Picard .

Dark Passions [ ]

Also in 2369, Troi and Worf were visited by Bajor 's Intendant , Kira's and her associate, Annika Hansen .

Troi began setting her sights on soon living on planet Betazed II. Troi learned that a man called Tomas was a harasser of women, so she had him killed for that. ( TNG novel: Dark Passions , Book One )

By stardate 47104.0, Troi decided that she was beginning to look similar in attire to Kira, so she took to wearing a long blue dress. She then joined with Skrain Dukat to begin a plan to depose Kira from her position. Part of this plan was a meeting with Kira (as well as Worf and Torres) on deep-core mining chaired by Jennifer Sisko. After Troi staged a failed attempt on Kira's life which aroused Kira's suspicions, Troi used her psychological training to convince Kira she was, in fact, innocent, but this situation was eventually dispersed and Kira set about planning revenge.

Some time later, Deanna was in the process of giving birth to her and Worf's first child on planetoid New Hope, when Kira turned up in a vac-suit and murdered Troi with a phaser . ( TNG novel: Dark Passions , Book Two )

Dark Mirror [ ]

In one permutation of the mirror universe, Deanna Troi joined the crew of the ISS Enterprise -D under Captain Jean-Luc Picard in 2364, as ship's security chief. She was third in command after Picard and William T. Riker .

On stardate 44010.2 in 2367, Troi discovered Geordi La Forge acting suspiciously, working with isolinear chips. Subjecting him to interrogation in the agony booth, Troi was able to determine that he was actually an inferior version of La Forge, from another universe . Troi killed security guard Reg Barclay for allowing the intruder to slip past him. ( TNG novel: Dark Mirror )

Mirror Broken [ ]

By the mid-24th century, Inquisitor Troi was serving in the Terran Starfleet , being assigned to the starship ISS Stargazer , under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard . Her job was to keep tabs on the emotions and loyalties of the crew. When Picard set his sights on taking command of the Enterprise , being constructed in secret above Utopia Planitia at the time, Troi screened members of the Stargazer crew to determine the best candidates to make up the new Enterprise crew under Picard's command. She also contacted the unfinished ship's first officer, Commander William T. Riker , to set up a meeting with him for Picard. ( TNG - Mirror Broken comics: "Issue 1", "Issue 2")

Star Trek: Mirror Universe [ ]

Troi grew up on a nearly desolate Betazed that had been devastated by the Terran Empire decades earlier. Her mother ran the Sacred Chalice, a brothel that contained the last survivors of the Betazoid race who were forced to act as prostitutes. As she grew up, her sister Kestra tried to teach her to shield her mind from their mother's probing. At the same time, Deanna's own mental powers were being suppressed by a neural suppressor that her mother had installed in Deanna at an early age.

The Terran Empire had exterminated all known telepathic races in the 23rd century, including Betazoids. Some Betazoids had survived the reign of the empire; however, knowledge of Betazed's existence had been lost to time; not even appearing on Alliance star charts. The surviving Betazoids - which, ironically, attempted to pass themselves off as Terrans to escape the Alliance's wrath - either hid in the planet's caves, while others worked at the Sacred Chalice. When the Duras sisters, Lursa and B'Etor , were killed while visiting the Chalice, Betazed was abandoned due to fear of Alliance retaliation.

In 2371, Troi was working for her mother at the Chalice when Jean-Luc Picard took a job as a musician at the establishment. Troi began feeling stirrings of her mental abilities around Picard and eventually discovered that Picard had a device that shut off Deanna's neural suppressor, supplied by Kestra. Later, while Picard was waiting to assassinate Lursa and B'Etor , he accidentally activated the device and Deanna was enraged by the news that the Klingons had killed her sister when they arrived at the planet. Troi then took a bomb from Picard and threw it at the Klingons, who were standing with her mother. The blast killed the Klingons and Lwaxana, and Troi fled the planet alongside Picard. She eventually became involved in the Terran Rebellion . ( TNG - Mirror Universe short story: " The Sacred Chalice ")

Later in 2378 Deanna joined the Galactic Commonwealth and served on the Enterprise as security chief under Captain Jean-Luc Picard . ( ST novel: Rise Like Lions )

Through a Glass, Darkly [ ]

In 2372, " Intendant " Troi as she sometimes refers to herself, bribed and killed her way onto the Alliance's Betazed Orbital Construction Station where she and her accomplices made off with several nearly complete Alliance warships. Using the ships, she managed to capture and hold several planets in a system near to Betazed. She has since teamed up with the rebellion forces in control of Terok Nor . ( Decipher RPG module: Through a Glass, Darkly )

Memory Gamma continuity [ ]

New terran empire [ ].

In 2385, Deanna joined the New Terran Empire and served on aboard the ISS Enterprise -E as chief of security and personal bodyguard to Grand Admiral Halliwell . (Typhuss999 storyline)

Terran Rebellion [ ]

After the deposement of Empress Hoshi Sato VII in 2407, Deanna with no where esle to go joined the Terran Rebellion in 2408, Deanna was allowed to join the Rebellion because she was exiled from the New Terran Empire by Empress Hoshi Sato . Upon joining the Rebellion, Deanna became the subject of suspicion by many, because Lieutenant Commander Troi was a former Imperial Starfleet officer of the New Terran Empire. (Typhuss999 storyline)

Overall, Star Trek: The Mirror War Troi #1 is an intriguing take on my personal favorite from the Star Trek: The Next Generation, one that proves that sometimes a mind is more dangerous than any man made weapon. The story by Nijkamp is intractably woven. The art by the creative team is gorgeous. Altogether, this issue shows what a missed opportunity it was for this series to have never gotten a chance to play in this universe. Read Full Review

It's a stellar coda to "The Mirror War" saga that will leave fans eager to see what comes next for the Mirror Enterprise crew. Read Full Review

Recent Star Trek titles have suffered from uneven artwork and this one-shot is no exception. Given the emphasis IDW has placed on the Mirror War over the last year, it's surprising the publisher hasn't demanded higher quality artwork from its creative teams. Read Full Review

I'm not sure why we needed this one shot and the art is only so-so. We find out that Troi may have been playing a game from the beginning, but I'm not sure what. She left Betazed when she was one of the rulers to try to become the empress. I'm just confused about her motivations, which deminished the action of the book.

Biography [ ]

Early life [ ].

Deanna Troi, the second daughter of Lwaxana and Starfleet officer, Ian Andrew Troi , was born on March 29th 2336 , on the planet Betazed near Lake El-Nar . ( TNG episode : " Conundrum ", ST website  : StarTrek.com )

A few months after Deanna's birth, her elder sister Kestra drowned in Lake El'nar chasing the family dog. ( TNG episode : " Dark Page ")

One of Deanna's favorite pastimes growing up was having her father, Ian, read stories to her about Earth 's ancient west era and singing songs of the era. Deanna's favorite books were in the Cowboy Ralph series, written by an author named Ernest Pratt and her favorite song was Down in the Valley . Ian's nickname for Deanna was 'Durango'. The last time Deanna spoke to her father, he promised to return home with a surprise. Sadly, Ian Troi was killed in the line of duty before returning home when she was seven years of age. ( TLE novel : The Art of the Impossible , ST website  : StarTrek.com )

Troi also always longed to join a circus, but these were obsolete on Earth and had never existed on Betazed . ( TNG comic : " The Rich and the Dead! ")

Because Deanna was half-human, she could never be a full telepath, which she finally accepted at the age of 12 in 2348 , which caused her to experience feelings of isolation and inadequacy when compared to other Betazoids. ( TNG novel : Guises of the Mind ) She has "limited telepathic power" in that she could read emotions "and thought patterns of other sentient lifeforms" but with no reading of actual thoughts. ( TNG video game : The Transinium Challenge )

Young adulthood and early career [ ]

Deanna first met William T. Riker in the year 2354 at the wedding of her friend, Chandra Xerx , when Riker was temporarily assigned to Betazed. Riker actively pursued Deanna, and while the attraction was mutual, Deanna wished for Riker to mature emotionally before getting involved with him. Riker and Troi gave into their mutual passion in the Jalara Jungle after Riker rescued Deanna from a group of Sindareen raiders. At this point, Riker became Deanna's imzadi , or the first to touch her mind, soul, and body. The relationship was short-lived, as Riker tended to focus on his career and still had a roving eye for the ladies, combined with Deanna's overbearing mother. The two parted amicably, without saying "Good-Bye". ( TNG novel : Imzadi )

Deanna Troi, cadet

Deanna entered Starfleet Academy in 2355 . ( TNG episode : " Conundrum ")

Troi majored in psychology at the University of Betazed . ( TNG video game : Echoes from the Past ) and ( TNG novel : Imzadi )

In 2358 , Deanna began a four-month advanced behavioral psychology internship at Darona 's prison facility for the criminally insane. During her time at the prison, Deanna studied Hent Tevren , a Betazoid psychopath who had the ability to kill telepathically. ( TNG novel : The Battle of Betazed )

In 2359 , Troi graduated from the Academy. Later that year, she served with a senior officer named Masc . ( TNG episode : " Conundrum "; ST - Tales of the Dominion War short story : " The Ceremony of Innocence is Drowned ")

In 2361 , Deanna Troi met Will Riker at the Janaran Falls on Betazed. The two arranged to meet on Risa, six weeks later, but Riker failed to arrive. The two did not see one another until they were both posted aboard the USS Enterprise -D in 2364 . ( TNG episode : " Second Chances ")

In 2363 , Admiral J.P. Hanson assigned Troi to the staff of Captain Jean-Luc Picard , ostensibly as a first contact specialist. Her actual role, however, was to judge the captain's mental state. Deanna immediately told the captain the truth, as she felt it would be unethical to do otherwise. She remained on his staff as both contact specialist and counselor, and aided him in dealing with his emotions concerning the Manraloth .

In late 2363, Troi was promoted to lieutenant commander . While on Vulcan during a lay over on her way to Earth for the launch of the Enterprise -D, she counseled Picard (who was on Starbase 52 ) when he discovered that Beverly Crusher had been assigned as Enterprise chief medical officer . Picard later surprised her when he told her he'd found his new first officer, William Riker. ( TNG novel : The Buried Age )

Deanna as the Enterprise -D's Counselor in 2367 .

Lieutenant Commander Troi was assigned to the Enterprise -D as chief counselor in 2364 . On the starship's first mission to Deneb IV , she was vital to Captain Picard in discovering the truth about Q and the Star-jellies captured by the Bandi . ( TNG episode & novelization : Encounter at Farpoint )

In 2365 , Troi had the short-lived responsibility of mother to the alien lifeform Ian Andrew Troi II . ( TNG episode : " The Child ")

Following Picard's assimilation by the Borg into Locutus , Troi counselled him on his traumatic experience. ( TNG episode : " Family ", DS9 novelization : Emissary )

In 2367 , the Enterprise was assigned to transport Luss and Coridanite ambassadors to Sindar . During the mission, Deanna was poisoned by Raxatocin , administered by a Chameloid from the year 2408 . However, Deanna's life was saved by the intervention of Admiral William Riker, also from 2408, who had traveled to the past to prevent Deanna's murder. ( TNG novel : Imzadi )

Deanna and Dr. Crusher were then sent to help with a Zelaznan fever outbreak on the Beta Hydros Four colony. After they returned to the Enterprise , they learned that Commander Riker and his team aboard the shuttle Albert Einstein disappeared. Deanna, however, kept her hope that the ever-resourceful Riker would find a way back to them. ( TNG comic : " The Flight of the Albert Einstein ")

She was hesitant at first to agree with Captain Picard to return to other duties. She also agreed to help with the memorial service to them. At the memorial service, she gave a eulogy about Lt. Worf . ( TNG comic : " Mourning Star ")

When the Enterprise was sent help in the evacuation of Lanatos , Deana sensed that the Lanatosians were hiding something. Thus, Captain Picard sent her down there, using her Lieutenant Commander rank, to find out what they were hiding.

Skriiti

Deanna making first contact with the Skriiti.

As she investigated, she sensed something calling out to her. She discovered a cave and inside was a herd of telepathic Skriiti . Unfortunately, the Lanatosians tried to keep her quiet by sealing her inside the cave. ( TNG comic : " Trapped ")

She was eventually rescued by Lieutenant Commander Data . She along with the captain and Data, were able to convince the Lanatosians to allow the Skriiti to be taken with them. ( TNG comic : " The Barrier ")

After Lanatos was destroyed, Deanna and one of the Skriiti talked about her sadness about Riker and the others. When the Enterprise arrived somewhere near the Klingon border, in response to a message from the IKS Ars'Lek about a ship, she sensed that ship was filled with klingons, Romulans , humans, Benzites , and Betazoids . Riker, his team from the Einstein , and the many aliens from the ship were rescued. ( TNG comic : " Homecoming ")

In 2370 , the Enterprise -D rendezvoused with the shuttlecraft Goddard , carrying retired Captain Montgomery Scott . Scott utilized the old logs of the original USS Enterprise and recreated the gravity slingshot that propelled the Bounty 2 back through time, with the Enterprise following. In this alternate universe , the Borg had assimilated Earth before they could develop warp drive, and were systematically assimilating the Alpha Quadrant . In addition, the Borg Queen had utilized several local species as unknowing technological farms; one such world was Narisias . One Narisian served on a ship the Enterprise encountered, the Wisdom , and Troi helped determine who she was by sensing a second presence in her mind controlling the body, so that the officer could not derail their plans. ( Star Trek novel : Engines of Destiny )

Also in that year, Deanna began a romantic relationship with Lieutenant Worf . ( TNG episode : " Parallels ")

After attending an Academy class reunion in 2370, Deanna returned to the Enterprise and applied to take the bridge officer's test. After working hard and taking advice from Commander Riker, Troi passed the test and was promoted to full Commander . ( TNG episode : " Thine Own Self ")

Later that year in a surprise attack on the Enterprise Deanna received substantial injuries, cranial trauma and massive internal hemorrhaging , she only survived thanks to Worf's instinct to check on her, defying orders to report to the bridge immediately. Despite Worf's efforts, she still almost died twice in sickbay. The aggressor later attacked again, however because Deanna had survived she could sense the ship had no crew which allowed the Enterprise crew to devise a way to block it's remote controlling communications and destroy the ship. Later when Troi had returned to her quarters Worf walked in on her and Riker engaged in a pillow fight, dropping the flowers he had bought her in shock. The two were just playing as friends though and as Riker departed to go on a date he reminded them the reason he had come round in the first place was to deliver Deanna's favorite dessert per Worf's suggestion. ( TNG comic : " Strategy ")

Following the destruction of the Enterprise -D in mid- 2371 , Worf proposed to Deanna and she accepted. After the couple met Lwaxana Troi on Betazed, Deanna and Worf's son, Alexander Rozhenko , were kidnapped by Sela and Thomas Riker . Deanna and Alexander were used as leverage to force Riker to assassinate Klingon Chancellor Gowron . Troi and Alexander were later rescued by Commander Elizabeth Shelby of the USS Excalibur . Following the rescue, Deanna and Worf called off their engagement, realizing that they were too different, and that Troi still had feelings for Will Riker. ( TNG novel : Triangle: Imzadi II )

The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E) [ ]

Nearly at the end of the USS Enterprise -E 's first year of service, the Borg returned and launched an attack on Earth. Although their main cube was destroyed, a Borg sphere traveled back in time to 2063 and conquered the planet there. The crew followed them back to this time and, while Picard and the majority of the crew fought the Collective in orbit, Troi accompanied an away team to the planet.

There, she played an integral role in convincing Zefram Cochrane to fulfill his destiny and achieve first contact before returning to 2373 . She also got drunk with him. On stardate 50900, Captain Picard posted a log entry commending Troi for her work in convincing Cochrane in continuing with his warp flight. ( TNG movie : First Contact , ST website  : StarTrek.com )

In 2374 , Deanna went with the Enterprise to help convince the Gorn Hegemony to join them in their fight against the Dominion. She accompanied Captain Picard and Dr. Crusher as the ruling government was undergoing a coup backed by the Black Crest . Deanna was then taken hostage by warlord Slessshh and his soldiers. After Data defeated Slessshh, she found the last of the eggs of the political caste. ( TNG comic : " The Gorn Crisis ")

Later that year, at the height of the Dominion War , Betazed was invaded by the Jem'Hadar . In early 2375 , Deanna was part of a commando mission to free the planet. During the course of that mission, she was forced to gain the knowledge of how to use telepathic powers to kill, among other manipulative powers. Using one's powers in these ways is considered very evil by the peaceful Betazoid people. She imparted the knowledge of how to overwhelm others with emotions to her people, but kept the rest to herself. Only being a half-Betazoid, she is not a strong enough telepath to use these powers, but is the only living carrier of the knowledge of how to kill with one's mind. ( TNG novel : The Battle of Betazed )

Later that same year, the Enterprise diverted to the planet Ba'ku after Data disrupted a Starfleet operation there. After the android was neutralized as a threat, Troi and Picard led an away team to the planet with Dr. Crusher . There, Troi gave valuable insights on the peaceful, simple Ba'ku society. Shortly afterwards, Picard chose to defy the orders of Admiral Dougherty - a collaborator with the tyrannical Son'a - in order to save the Ba'ku, and Troi was among the staff that agreed to help him.

While Riker and La Forge fended off the Son'a in space, a team consisting of Picard, Data, Worf, Troi, and Crusher engaged their troops on the surface. The crisis was cut short when Riker destroyed the Son'a ship in the Briar Patch and Dougherty, along with Son'a leader Ru'afo , was killed in a conflict with Picard. With the threat vanquished Troi and Dr. Crusher helped the Ba'ku to return to normal.

It was during this assignment that Troi and Riker rekindled their romance. ( TNG movie : Insurrection )

Other missions that Troi participated in during this year included a rendezvous with the Palami, a temporal encounter with the creator of the transporter ( TNG comic : " Forgiveness "), and the rescue of Gemworld . ( TNG novel : Gemworld )

In early 2378 , Troi was serving on the Enterprise when the USS Voyager returned from the Delta Quadrant . Troi was sent to Voyager to speak to the crew as they had been through severe trauma and had not had a counselor on the ship. She worked overtime and was told by Captain Picard to treat the situation as a "catastrophic-level" duty assignment. ( VOY novel : Homecoming )

In 2379, Troi married William Riker on Earth, surrounded by her friends. She prepared to leave Captain Picard and her crewmates on the USS Enterprise -E behind, as she had chosen to accompany her husband onto the USS Titan . However, this did not occur quite as planned; the newly-married couple became embroiled in Picard's latest mission to Romulus, where the recently-appointed Praetor Shinzon had extended a hand of peace towards the Federation.

Troi was a member of the away team (comprised of Picard, Riker, Data , and Worf ) that opened negotiations, but they quickly took a sinister turn. Shinzon was revealed to be a biological clone of Picard and, with the help of the Reman Viceroy , telepathically assaulted Troi. When the crew realised that Shinzon was planning to use a thalaron radiation weapon to destroy Earth, they engaged his vastly powerful flagship - the Scimitar - in battle. The Enterprise was crippled and many were killed. She was on the bridge when the Scimitar managed to breach it. Deanna was nearly blown out of her chair and sucked into space, but she managed to grip her console in time, and hung on until the force field came up.

Troi manned the helm during this crisis, and executed Picard's order to ram the ship into Shinzon's vessel. It was with Data's sacrifice, though, that Shinzon was defeated and the Scimitar destroyed. After mourning the loss of her friend, Troi finally left the Enterprise and began a fresh chapter of her life aboard Titan . ( TNG movie : Nemesis )

Later life [ ]

In 2381 , she and Riker had their first child, named Thaddeus "Thad" Troi-Riker . Troi and Riker also had a daughter, Kestra Troi-Riker named after her late sister. She and her family eventually settled on Nepenthe hoping mitigate Thad's Mendaxic neurosclerosis after Federation banned synthetic lifeforms follow the Attack on Mars . ( PIC episodes : " Nepenthe ", " Maps and Legends ")

25th century [ ]

At some point in the 25th century , Deanna was a captain and supervised a team creating a new holoprogram. She also had three grandchildren. ( STO novel : The Needs of the Many )

Personal information [ ]

Deanna loved chocolate in various forms, including Ktarian chocolate puffs and chocolate ice cream. ( TNG episode : " Liaisons "; VOY episode : " Life Line ")

Review: Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 5 “Mirrors”

Star Trek: Discovery picks up immediately where “ Face the Strange ” left off, as our protagonists track their quarry’s ship to a hidden, interdimensional pocket of space that holds a few surprises for them and the audience.

Thanks to some sciencing from Paul Stamets ( Anthony Rapp ) and Sylvia Tilly ( Mary Wiseman ), Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) has a way to find where Moll ( Eve Harlow ) and L’ak ( Elias Toufexis ) are. Apparently, there’s a wormhole hiding in plain sight near where Discovery lost track of the criminals’ warp signature.

This wormhole is too small for a Crossfield- class ship to fit through, so Burnham and Cleveland Booker ( David Ajala ) – the latter of whom is on a mission to rehabilitate Moll, if possible – take a shuttle and see what’s on the other side of the wormhole’s aperture. Find a surprise, they do indeed, as the I.S.S. Enterprise , the evil version of the heroic Starfleet ship, is nestled in the wormhole – albeit without its crew, which apparently evacuated the vessel at some point. It’s beaten to hell and serves as a refuge for Moll and L’ak, whose own ship was destroyed by the interdimensional pocket of space’s destructive environment.

star trek mirror troi

Discovery writers sure can be sneaky! They’ve been foreshadowing the appearance of a Constitution -class for the last two episodes; remember when Gen Rhys ( Patrick Kwok-Choon ) and Commander Rayner ( Callum Keith Rennie ) both remarked the Connie was their favorite ship? As we’ll see, this isn’t the last bit of foreshadowing that comes true in this episode.

“How did it end up in interdimensional space?” “I don’t know. Must be one hell of a story.” – Book and Burnham upon seeing the I.S.S. Enterprise

Astute viewers will recognize an often-used cost-saving measure in the annals of Star Trek history: the reuse of sets from another concurrent show. (Seriously, rewatch TNG , DS9 , and Voyager and you’ll be surprised how often props and sets are reused between those shows.) As Burnham and Book explore various halls and rooms, including the bridge and sickbay, the familiar surroundings seen in Strange New Worlds are subtly transformed by Mirror Universe iconography. While nods to the iconic starship Enterprise are always appreciated, our initial reaction to this surprise location—admittedly tinged with pessimism—is that it’s of course it’s the Enterprise . A practical move, perhaps, to keep expenses in check. By Grabthar’s hammer… what a savings.

Finding the ship deserted sure is strange, and Burnham and Book ascertain Moll and L’ak are in sickbay, presumably with the next clue in the Progenitor puzzle. But first, the pair check out the transporter room, which holds some strange items, such as blankets, children’s toys, and a locket that holds a picture of two people, which Burnham inexplicably decides to take with her. Moreover, the dedication plaque of the I.S.S Enterprise tells the story of the ship and its crew: the Terran Universe emperor seemingly tried to make changes to the way things were done in that evil universe, and the Enterprise escaped and picked up refugees who were trying to flee the Terran Universe and enter the Prime Universe.

One of the leaders among those on the Enterprise was a Kelpien, who Burnham deduces must have been the Mirror Universe version of Saru, and that the crew must have fled the Enterprise once it got stuck in the interdimensional pocket of space. Is it just us, or does this sound like a potential episode of Strange New Worlds ?

star trek mirror troi

Burnham, Book, Moll, and L’ak face off in sickbay, where Burnham makes a startling connection between L’ak and a particular dilemma he is facing. The criminal pair hope to use the Progenitor treasure to clear L’ak’s Breen blood bounty. Yes, L’ak is Breen, that enigmatic and masked species from Deep Space Nine . Neato!

The rest of the episode bounces between what’s happening on the Enterprise , and flashing back to how Moll and L’ak first met and became romantically involved. Moll, the courier, would do business on the Breen space station on which L’ak, a member of a royal Breen family, was posted. The two connected over L’ak’s recent demotion and efforts to fight the embarrassment that came with it.

Over some time, the two became nearly inseparable, and L’ak even took the bold step with Moll by showing her his face – a big deal in Breen culture, as keeping their masks on allows them to retain their true, semi-transparent form, and not the solidified appearance we’ve seen on L’ak. Their relationship is tested when L’ak’s superior (and uncle), Primarch Ruhn ( Tony Nappo ) decides to interrupt their courtship. L’ak doesn’t take kindly to being asked to kill Moll, so the Breen turns on his own people, earns a Breen blood bounty, and flees with Moll. The pair now share a goal: earn enough latinum to retire on an (unnamed) fabled planet somewhere in the Gamma Quadrant, free from the trials and hardships of the courier life.

Suffice it to say, “Mirrors” is most memorable because it casts a welcome light on the shadowed backstory of this season’s main villains. Moll and L’ak are now a relatable pair, star-crossed lovers who are hell-bent on earning themselves a happy ending. As much as we don’t want to see the Progenitors’ tech get into the wrong hands, who now doesn’t want to see everything work out for Moll and L’ak?

Anyway, the quartet still need to get off the Enterprise , but the shuttle on which Burnham and Book arrived is destroyed by the turbulent pocket of space. With mere minutes to spare before the Enterprise is destroyed by the wormhole’s tiny aperture, Book and Moll share some last-minute words about their shared relationship with the late Cleveland Booker, and how Book hopes Moll makes the right choices regarding her quest for the Progenitor tech. Burnham, meanwhile, engages in a melee with L’ak, and the Breen ends up injured and inadvertently relinquishes control to Burnham of the next map piece in the Progenitor puzzle. The courier and disgraced Breen end up escaping the ship in a convenient Terran warp pod, leaving the chase between our heroes and enemies for another day.

“If we hit it precisely with a sequential hexagonal pattern, it should stay open for approximately sixty seconds. But once it collapses, it’s gone for good.” “Why hexagonal?” “Doesn’t matter… it’ll work.” – Adira ( Blu del Barrio ), Rayner, and Stamets as the crew finds a way to get the wormhole aperture bigger. We think this line from Stamets is reflective of the evolving working relationship between the results-orientated Rayner and the crew, and how this relationship is getting better the longer Rayner is first officer.

Burnham devises a novel way to signal her first officer for help in getting the Enterprise through the aperture: a pulsing tractor beam emitting from the Enterprise , shot through the wormhole’s opening, in a numerical sequence featured in a famous play from Kellerun culture. Rayner is then able to lead his crew to devise a way to pull the Enterprise into normal space.

The sequence where Rayner is faced with command of a ship tasked with the near-impossible rescue of his captain is the best of the episode. It’s no secret Rayner was knocked down a few pegs after his demotion and reassignment to Discovery , but that lack of confidence and inner angst is demolished thanks to Rayner listening and working with his bridge crew to save the Enterprise . Plenty of lesser-known bridge officers get a say in how Discovery could help the Mirror ship, and lightning-fast decision-making shows Rayner back on his game.

The last element to note about this episode is some emotional trouble Doctor Hugh Culber ( Wilson Cruz ) is having. Tilly provides an outlet for this angst. Culber explains the experiences he’s had in the last few years – namely dying, coming back to life, and being a Trill host – really put into perspective the intellectual journey he is on in the face of the Progenitor’s quest. Tilly helps him realize he isn’t only experiencing an intellectual quest, but a spiritual one. This conversation is just another instance of Discovery setting up some wild expectations for what the crew might ultimately discover at the end of the season – something beyond the bounds of science, perhaps?

Even though their prey gets away again, Burnham and her crew have the next clue in the Progenitor puzzle, and it is hiding in the I.S.S. Enterprise ’s sickbay. Hidden in the map piece Burnham grabbed from L’ak is a vial, which Stamets will analyze soon. Burnham learns the crew who escaped from the I.S.S. Enterprise ended up in the Prime Universe and were able to start new lives. A Terran scientist aboard the Enterprise , Dr. Cho, ended up being a branch admiral, and we’re meant to assume she was one of the scientists on Dr. Vellek’s team hundreds of years ago as they studied the Progenitor tech. Dr. Cho then hid her piece of the Progenitor puzzle aboard her old ship as a symbolic gesture of her ability to find freedom in a new universe.

Discovery continues its final season with another thumbs-up episode that serves an important lore-building role in the franchise. Seeing the Breen again is a joy, especially since we were staring at one the whole time and never knew it. And how striking was that Breen space station where L’ak was based? Another important note for Star Trek historians is that now the Mirror Universe Enterprise is in the 32 nd century, and stationed near Earth thanks to Joann Owosekun and Keyla Detmer piloting the ship back to Federation space. Will we see that ship again this season?

As the Progenitor puzzle deepens, so do the emotional stakes for our crew, exemplified by Culber’s introspective journey, the subtle reignition of Book and Burnham’s relationship, and Rayner’s triumphant return to leadership. We’re now at the halfway point in this season, so there’s still plenty of time for surprises, emotional consequences, and expectation-setting for this eagerly awaited treasure.

Stray Thoughts:

  • Hopefully, you’re watching this episode with subtitles on, because goodness is it hard to hear what masked Breen says.
  • The Mirror Universe version of the U.S.S. Enterprise was last seen in the Original Series episode “Mirror, Mirror,” albeit this wasn’t the Strange New Worlds version of the ship. Likewise, the Terran version of Spock, whom Booker asks if Burnham ever met, was in that same episode.
  • How did Adira conclude they were the one who brought the time bug aboard Discovery ?
  • Why didn’t Burnham and Book try talking down Moll and L’ak before diving into the room with the holo-projected doubles?

New episodes of Star Trek: Discovery stream Thursdays on Paramount+ , this season stars Sonequa Martin-Green (Captain Michael Burnham), Doug Jones (Saru), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), David Ajala (Cleveland “Book” Booker), Blu del Barrio (Adira) and Callum Keith Rennie (Rayner). Season five also features recurring guest stars Elias Toufexis (L’ak) and Eve Harlow (Moll).

Summary [ ]

While on a scientific mission at the edge of the Milky Way Galaxy – where the phrase "empty space" can be taken quite literally – the USS Enterprise -D rendezvous with a ship from the nomadic Lailaru race, with whom a researcher from Starfleet has hitched a ride after a long research mission. The researcher, Commander "Hwii", has been studying hyperstrings – intangible connections between celestial bodies that seem to tie them together, and provide a sort of invisible "map" to the galaxy.

Shortly after the rendezvous, the Enterprise experiences a strange disturbance, and Hwii panics, insisting that his sense of direction tells them they are "not in the right place" despite the fact that their stellar position appears to be the same. The crew realizes what Hwii is talking about when an intruder is discovered tampering with the ship's computer core, a Lieutenant named Mark Stewart, who is an exact doppleganger for another Enterprise crewman.

Research into historical files lets the crew realize that the ship has been pulled into another universe , one that was first encountered by the crew of the original Enterprise a century earlier . Except, while that earlier crossover was an accident, this time the effect seems to have been produced on purpose. The Enterprise' s long-range sensors detect their counterpart: the ISS Enterprise -D. The ship carefully maintains its distance, while trying to determine the best way back home. Meanwhile, Mirror-Stewart dies from a virus that Crusher theorizes was designed by her counterpart, revealing that Mirror-Riker and Mirror-Troi did not expect him to return.

Eventually Picard 's crew decides that the only way is to infiltrate the Imperial vessel and examine whatever apparatus they used to cause the transfer. La Forge and Troi are selected to carry out the mission – La Forge because of his computer skills, Troi because her counterpart's position as the ship's "security officer" would allow them unfettered access. However, the away team soon runs into difficulties which require that Picard join them aboard the Imperial vessel.

After Troi and La Forge incapacitate Picard's counterpart, and stash him in a closet aboard his quarters, they take refuge in an engineering crawlspace while Picard has to spend a day as "himself" aboard the Imperial vessel. It is a harrowing experience:

  • Picard is accompanied everywhere by his personal bodyguard , Reginald Barclay ; when he is foolish enough to leave Barclay behind for a moment, he is nearly killed by a vengeful Wesley Crusher , seeking revenge for his father 's murder at Picard's hands. Picard then has to watch mutely as Wesley is tortured in the ship's agony booth as punishment.
  • Will Riker is a thuggish brute and the "real" Deanna Troi a cold-blooded murderess with dangerously invasive telepathic abilities – and both wear their ambition to displace Picard as captain on their sleeves.
  • Worf is addressed by all as "Slave" – and worse, he is so inured to this degrading treatment as to be accepting of it (Picard is later shocked to learn that, in the mirror universe, the Klingon Empire was not only defeated in its war with the Terrans, but their entire race was discommended , en masse , and subjugated).
  • Picard is most horrified to learn that Beverly Crusher , in addition to being the ship's CMO , is also " captain's woman " (his counterpart's mistress); Picard arranged Jack R. Crusher's "accidental" death, then likewise arranged a career-ending embarrassment for Beverly that was only averted through his intervention – blackmailing her into his bed. After so many years with him, she is a broken and bitter woman, too numbed to his cruelty to even object to the torturing of her own son.

Picard gleans that the ISS Enterprise is waiting for an opportunity to pounce on its "primary universe" counterpart. On an "inspection" tour of engineering, Picard realizes that the Imperials' plan is to capture the vessel intact, then massacre its crew and return it to the primary universe, masquerading as their counterparts. After a few months of gathering all necessary intelligence on Starfleet 's dispositions and defenses, the Empire will invade, challenging the Federation , Klingons , and Romulans on multiple fronts – the mirror universe Starfleet projects that they may be able to conquer the entire quadrant in as little as a year.

While La Forge and Troi continue their attempts to penetrate the Imperial vessel's computers, Picard decides he needs to slow them down with a little sabotage of his own. He takes a handful of surgical nanites borrowed from Beverly Crusher, reprograms them with sabotage instructions, and slips them into the ship's systems. Within an hour, its systems are crashing, leaving it dead in the water. Troi and Picard also incapacitate La Forge's counterpart, and Picard orders "La Forge" to get to work repairing the ship, allowing La Forge to access the computers.

Unfortunately, La Forge is betrayed by one of his assistants, and tortured by Security Officer Troi in the agony booth, where he breaks just enough to allow Troi to realize who "Picard" really is.

Picard rushes to his counterpart's cabin just as the other Picard is regaining consciousness. The two fight, and Picard-prime knocks mirror-Picard out just as Troi's guards storm into the room, killing Barclay in the process. Picard is so enraged at this senseless murder that he forgets his cover and vents that rage full-bore at Troi – an emotional overload that shocks her. Mistaking the unconscious mirror-Picard for the primary universe imposter, Troi weakly orders him taken to the booth, then quickly retreats.

During the confrontation with Troi, Picard is discomfited to realize that that universe's Worf has realized who he really is. Worf does not speak up, however, and he says he will help Picard and his crew escape – a small return for the momentary kindness Picard showed him while acting as the ship's captain.

Troi, acting as her counterpart, has La Forge released from the torture chambers, and they rendezvous with Picard. Before they flee the Imperial ship, Picard repeats the advice given by James T. Kirk to that universe's Spock a hundred years earlier: that the Empire's eventual collapse is inevitable, and now, with the Empire grasping at straws to find "new worlds to conquer", that collapse is closer than ever. Picard urges Worf to spread the word in secret among his people, and the Empire's other subjects, to be ready to rise up when the moment presents itself. Worf, presented with the first ray of hope he has ever known in his life, thanks them and wishes them well. Troi stuns him to cover up his complicity, and all three of them beam back to their shuttle craft, and from there back to the Enterprise .

With the information stolen by La Forge, the Enterprise crew is able to duplicate the "switchback" device the Imperials used, which allows them not only to return to their own universe, but to "snap back" the ISS Enterprise when it tries to follow them.

During the debriefing, La Forge reports that, in escaping from the Imperials, they have perfected a "snap back" method that can be widely distributed throughout the Federation, to repel any Imperial vessels that try to slip through or invade in other parts of the galaxy – the Imperials were so enamored of their new technology that they decided to use it before developing a countermeasure to the "snap back" technique.

Relieved to be "home" at last, the crew releases much of its pent-up tension with an impromptu opera performance in one of the ship's holodecks . After a thoroughly enjoyable evening, Picard leaves with Crusher on his arm, as he reflects that the mirror universe, however morally inverted it was, still had decent people like Worf inhabiting it, and he wonders aloud whether a man really can change the future with just a few words. Crusher kisses him goodnight and says that, in their universe at least, the single word "engage" seems to work wonders.

  • Dark Mirror reached number fourteen on the New York Times Best Seller List for 28 November 1993 , its only week on the list. [1]
  • The Science Fiction Book Club released a special edition of the hardback in March 1994 .
  • Since the novel was written and published prior to DS9 : " Crossover " (although the paperback release came after), it appears to contradict the history and development of the mirror universe as seen in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , in which the Terran Empire had been conquered by the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance in the late 23rd century .
  • The bridge of the ISS Enterprise -D seems to have been influenced by the battleship Enterprise 's bridge in " Yesterday's Enterprise ".
  • Different versions of the mirror O'Brien and the mirror Worf later appear on screen in Deep Space Nine .

Characters [ ]

Main characters [ ], original characters [ ], mirror universe [ ], history of the mirror universe [ ], the terran empire [ ].

The Terran Empire (called "United Empire of Planets" here) was formed from the ashes of the Eugenics Wars , where Khan Noonien Singh and his Augment followers were not defeated as in the primary universe, but instead established competing empires that eventually wiped each other out in nuclear holocaust, using atomic weapons delivered by ion-powered craft.

The surviving governments eventually banded together to form the Empire of Earth, and began expanding into space, fixated on assuring the survival of their own race rather than peaceful exploration. In the mirror universe, there was no World War III , a cataclysmic event that convinced the primary universe's Earth population to band together for peaceful purposes.

However, Jean-Luc Picard, examining his counterpart's collection of literature, finds evidence that the "moral inversion" which differentiates this universe was not born out of any single turning point or event, but rather built up gradually over thousands of years, beginning some time around that of the Ancient Greeks (Picard notes that Homer 's Iliad is roughly similar to the version he is familiar with, but after that the moral inversion follows swiftly).

After terraforming Mars with a casual indifference (wiping out numerous artifacts and fossils in the process), the Terrans then, with the development of warp drive, expanded out into interstellar space, solely intent on conquest. Alpha Centauri – already inhabited by colonists from another local system – was "cleansed" and re-colonized, as was its foster planet, Gamma Centauri. Vulcan , having never been grown past its violent roots through the teachings of Surak , became a valued ally of the Terrans.

Eventually, contact was made with the Romulans , leading to a war every bit as bloody as it was in the primary universe. After the Romulans were defeated at the Battle of Cheron , the Terrans invaded the Empire itself, destroyed Remus , and demanded the surrender of Romulus . The Romulan people committed collective suicide rather than surrender, and the Empire took over the planet. Not long after, the United Empire of Planets was formed, and continued to expand.

As narrated by Worf's counterpart, when the Terran and Klingon Empires clashed, the Terrans were eventually victorious, after another protracted and bloody conflict. Unlike the Romulans, the Klingons chose to live, and the Terrans discommendated them, en masse , and reduced them to serve as slaves.

Jean-Luc Picard remarks on the irony that the mirror universe's inhabitants have never encountered Q or the Borg , the only powers he can think of that might actually have outmatched and humbled them.

By the late 24th century , the Empire encompasses the entirety of the galaxy's Sagittarius Arm. Because the Sagittarius arm has become disconnected from the rest of that universe's Milky Way galaxy by everything but gravity, they have run out of viable systems to conquer. Now, there are no inhabitable worlds beyond the Empire's borders that can be reached in less than ten to twenty years, even at high warp speeds – hence the impetus to find a way to invade the primary universe.

Aftermath of " Mirror, Mirror " [ ]

Spock did more than "consider" Kirk 's parting message. With the use of Kirk's Tantalus field , he became a powerful and influential figure in Starfleet Command and attempted to reform the Empire from within, but was ultimately unsuccessful. He was framed on treason charges and executed, some twelve years after the original "crossover" incident. His father, Sarek , was likewise assassinated a short time later.

Before escaping the ISS Enterprise -D, Picard tells Worf's counterpart that Spock had predicted the Empire would collapse in approximately two hundred years; in their time, one hundred of those years had already passed, and the Empire was closer to collapse than even Spock anticipated. Picard encouraged Worf to spread the word among his people , to be ready to rise and retake their freedom and their honor when the chance came.

The ISS Enterprise and its operational history [ ]

In the mirror universe, the ISS Enterprise (ICC-1701-D) is similar in appearance to its Galaxy -class counterpart, but displays marked differences:

  • a more threatening "gun-metal gray" hull color;
  • a deeper curve to the primary hull ; and
  • a larger secondary hull with warp nacelles raked further forward.

In summary, Picard finds it "a cruel look, and intimidating" (p. 62).

The Imperial ship's engine power and weaponry is also significantly greater: more powerful phaser banks , a complement of photon torpedoes six times greater than the USS Enterprise carries; more powerful deflector shields , and several different varieties of weapons not equipped on Federation vessels: "nova devices", "molecular disassociators" (described as an improvement on a weapon first developed by the Romulans, possibly an early variant of the disruptor ), and " atomics in several different flavors." The reason for the last item on the list is not given, but the Empire may have decided that the relatively low power of these weapons was an acceptable loss given that, unlike photon torpedoes , they wouldn't compete with the engines for antimatter.

It is only notably inferior to its counterpart in terms of sensor capability, Worf reflecting that, like the Klingon warriors of old, they have focused so heavily on offensive capability that their ship's ability to observe in secret is notably hampered, allowing USS Enterprise to briefly monitor ISS Enterprise without them knowing.

Similar to Kirk aboard the mirror Enterprise , Jean-Luc Picard asks for an operational history of his counterpart, and is revolted to hear an "inverted" version of the Enterprise' s early missions (as chronicled in the first season of TNG ):

  • Picard assumed command after the destruction of his previous command, ISS Stargazer (ICC-2055) at the Battle of Maxia .
  • The destruction of Farpoint Station during the attack by an alien entity ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ");
  • The irradiation of an entire continent of Ligon II (killing an estimated thirty million people), when its inhabitants refused to surrender the vaccine needed to treat the outbreak of Anchilles fever on Styris IV ( TNG : " Code of Honor ");
  • The recovery of a stolen T-9 energy converter from the Ferengi , followed by the genocide of the Ferengi race through the "prejudicial" terraforming of their world ( TNG : " The Last Outpost ");
  • The destruction of the Tarellian starship menacing Haven ( TNG : " Haven ");
  • The destruction of the entity overseeing the Edo species on Rubicun III , then incorporating the Edo into the Empire ( TNG : " Justice ");
  • The destruction of the Jaradan species ( TNG : " The Big Goodbye ");
  • The decimation of the Aldeans as punishment for trying to kidnap imperial children to repopulate their dying race ( TNG : " When The Bough Breaks "); and
  • The destruction of the crystalline life form on Velara III to allow that planet's terraforming to continue ( TNG : " Home Soil ").

  • Lalairu : A culture comprised of nomadic space-faring species which roam the fringes of the galaxy. Also known for their erratic linguistic conglomerate.
  • Alexander the Great : King of ancient Macedon and famous military leader; in reviewing the state of the Empire's conquests, and how it has been "quarantined" by the surrounding empty space, Picard echoes the quote "no more worlds to conquer" often attributed to, or made about, Alexander.
  • Anthony Burgess and James Joyce : 20th century Earth novelists. Picard wishes Burgess and Joyce had assisted in programming translations of Lalairu communications, feeling that they may have been among the few authors whose own writing was erratic enough to make Lalairu comprehensible to them.
  • The Merchant of Venice : In which Portia successfully argues that Shylock has the same right to justice as any man, that his "pound of flesh" could never be received without blood being spilled. "The quality of mercy must be earned", she extols, and Antonio is killed as a result. In addition, Lorenzo betrays Jessica, who commits suicide using his sword.
  • Titus Andronicus , King Lear , and MacBeth are largely identical to their primary universe versions, except that one of the few humane references in Lear – stage directions depicting Gloucester's servant trying to prevent his master's execution – is absent.
  • Rudyard Kipling : 19th century Earth novelist. Picard notes that Kipling, "idiosyncratic as always," is one of the few authors whose "mirror" work is largely unchanged.
  • Aristotle : Ancient Greek philosopher. Picard notes that Aristotle's work is largely unchanged, being one of the rare humane voices.
  • Plato : Ancient Greek philosopher. Unlike Aristotle, in the mirror universe Plato's work is completely inverse to his primary universe counterpart's – he now argues that the most effective government is government by the strong for the protection of the weak, maintained through fear (similar to Niccolo Machiavelli ).
  • Homer : Ancient Greek epic poet. Picard finds that Homer's epic poem Iliad is mostly the same as its primary version, indicating that the moral inversion began after it was written; however, small traces of ruthlessness can still be found in the text – in the scene when King Priam of Troy begs Achilles to release his son, Hector 's body for burial, Achilles murders Priam in cold blood.
  • Francois Villon : 15th century French poet. Picard finds himself repeating Villon's poetry in his head to confuse the mirror-universe Troi, who scornfully dismisses the poetry as "third-rate."
  • Transilience : a theoretical method of space travel, enabling instantaneous transportation over several thousand light years (a method that seems to have been perfected by the Iconians ). Picard reflects that transilience is the only solution he can think of to traverse the vast swathes of empty space surrounding the Empire, and it is still so far from becoming reality that the Empire will not achieve it before its collapse.
  • Zefram Cochrane (misspelled "Zephram Cochrane" in the novel): the inventor of warp drive in both universes; in the mirror universe, his invention fueled the Empire's first serious expansion.
  • Dreadnought : A class of starship in the primary universe that Riker suggests is their closest analogue to the ISS Enterprise -D.
  • Fifth House of Betazed : The family to which Deanna Troi and her mother, Lwaxana belong; Deanna finds herself imitating her mother's imperious manner as a "Daughter of the Fifth House" while trying to play her role as her mirror universe self.
  • Picard Maneuver : When wearing his counterpart's Imperial uniform, Picard attempts to tug down the front, only to find that he can't; he is irritated to find that the mirror universe's designers have somehow fixed the problem that his own uniforms always have.

Screen Rant

Walter koenig says william shatner was “funny” & “made us all laugh” on star trek: the original series.

Walter Koenig recalls William Shatner was fun and a source of humor on the set of Star Trek: The Original Series.

  • Walter Koenig praises William Shatner's humor on set, emphasizing his gratitude for the opportunity to work on Star Trek.
  • Koenig highlights Shatner's ability to make everyone laugh, showcasing a more congenial and lighthearted side to the actor.
  • Koenig shares a funny moment where Shatner repeatedly blew a line on set and recalling the camaraderie among the cast.

Walter Koenig recalls William Shatner as being funny on the set of Star Trek: The Original Series . Keonig joined Star Trek as Ensign Pavel Chekov in season 2, continued in Star Trek: The Original Series season 3, and Walter reprised Chekov in seven Star Trek movies. Koenig now reviews his episodes of Star Trek on The 7th Rule podcas t with hosts Cirroc Lofton and Ryan T. Husk, where his "I was there" insight is illuminating and invaluable.

Reviewing Star Trek: The Original Series season 2, episode 4, "Mirror, Mirror," on The 7th Rule , Cirroc Lofton enjoyed a moment in "Mirror, Mirror" where the Mirror Chekov wanted to kill Captain James T. Kirk . Lofton joked to Koenig that he "felt the joy" of Walter getting a chance to attempt to kill Kirk, nodding to Koenig's well-documented issues with William Shatner. However, Koenig set the record straight about how he felt about Shatner while filming Star Trek: The Original Series . Read his quote and watch The 7th Rule video below:

Just for the record, guys, when I was doing the series, I was so grateful to be working… that I did not take umbrage with Bill’s behavior. For one thing, he was funny. He made us all laugh. He was funny frequently, I mean, on purpose. If he blew a line, he dealt with it in a funny way. And, after all, I had just come aboard, and I was the new kid. And I was just grateful that most weeks, they found a few speeches for me to say.

The 7th Rule host Ryan T. Husk asked Walter Koenig about a time William Shatner made him laugh on set, and here's what Walter said:

Bill was fun. He was really the source of a lot of humor on the TV series. He didn’t have to take himself so seriously because everyone bought into it. He didn’t have to fight to be the principal performer. Everyone just knew it, and when you’re comfortable with your position, and when you know the world is bowing to you as you walk by, then I think your temperament is probably more congenial. We all blew lines. Everybody blew lines. It’s what happens. And Bill had a moment when he blew his line, and he blew it literally ten times in a row. It was hysterical. He kept saying the wrong word… The word was something like - this is not it - but it was something like ‘Paris’, and he kept saying ‘Parrish’ time after time. And we were all hysterical. We were all falling on the floor, including Bill. He thought it was funny as well.

Star Trek: The Original Series Cast & Character Guide

Walter koenig's problems with william shatner started in the star trek movies, koenig had a different attitude when shooting the star trek tv series.

On The 7th Rule , Walter Koenig also clarified that he didn't develop problems with William Shatner until they started filming the Star Trek movies . Koenig wished Chekov could have received greater character development in the feature films , but he felt lucky to be part of Star Trek when they were filming The Original Series . Read Koenig's quote below:

I didn’t really start getting distressed until we started making the movies, I don’t think. Maybe in retrospect, after the series ended, I was wondering, ‘Gee, wouldn’t it have been nice if I’d had the opportunity to do more?’ I certainly felt like I could do more. There was no bitterness in my perception of things. I was just glad to be there. And if Mr. Shatner chose to ignore me, that was okay. I accepted that as the game plan, as the way things were. I didn’t take it personally.

At the time of Star Trek: The Original Series season 2, Koenig was happy to have a supporting role in an NBC television series . In the Star Trek movies, when the emphasis was placed on the main trio of Kirk, Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley), it left supporting actors like Walter Koenig, George Takei, and the late James Doohan feeling underutilized and personally slighted by William Shatner. But in Star Trek: The Original Series , Walter Koenig fondly remembers William Shatner cracking the cast up on set.

Star Trek: Discoverys 6 Best Friendships

  • Star Trek: Discovery showcases authentic friendships like Lt. Keyla Detmer & Lt. Joann Owosekun, echoing iconic duos from past series.
  • Michael Burnham's dynamic relationships, especially with Philippa Georgiou and Cleveland Booker, add depth to Star Trek: Discovery.
  • The evolving bond between Burnham and Sylvia Tilly highlights the show's focus on meaningful friendships and character growth.

Star Trek: Discovery has some of Star Trek's best friendships. Since the adventures of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) on Star Trek: The Original Series , friendship has been a big part of Star Trek . Along with Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Kirk and Spock formed an iconic trio, whose friendship came to define the dynamic of their characters. From Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner) and Lt. Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) on Star Trek: The Next Generation to Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) and Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meany) on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , every Star Trek series has had at least one iconic friendship.

Star Trek: Discovery has worn a lot of different hats since its beginnings, going from a dark revenge-focused story in its first seasin to an intergalactic adventure story in its final season. But through all of Discovery's ups and downs, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) has been at the center of the story, and her relationships and the relationships of those around her form the heart of the show. Star Trek: Discovery has allowed its characters to show more emotion than any previous Star Trek show, making the friendships among the crew of the USS Discovery feel all the more authentic.

The 10 Best Friendships In Star Trek

Keyla detmer & joann owosekun, uss discovery's pilot and the operations officer..

Although Lt. Commander Keyla Detmer (Emily Coutts) and Lt. Commander Joann Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) have been largely absent from Star Trek: Discovery season 5, their friendship has been a subtle throughline since the show's first season. Detmer serves as Discovery's helmsman, while Owosekun (or Owo) serves as an operations officer. Much like Lt. Hikaru Sulu (George Takei) and Ensign Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig) in Star Trek: The Original Series, Detmer and Owo sit next to each other on the bridge and often trade looks and remarks.

In the latter half of Star Trek: Discovery season 4, Owosekun and Detmer finally began helping more on missions and getting more to do.

Throughout Star Trek: Discovery, Detmer and Owosekun have been seen spending time off duty with one another and other members of the crew. As Discovery progressed, it became obvious Keyla and Joann had a well-established rapport, and they have both proven to be invaluable members of the USS Discovery's crew. In the latter half of Star Trek: Discovery season 4, Owosekun and Detmer finally began joining away missions and getting more to do, so hopefully they will return for the last few episodes of Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Michael Burnham & Philippa Georgiou

A surprising connection that spans universes..

When Star Trek: Discovery first began, Commander Michael Burnham was the First Officer of the USS Shenzhou under Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). When Burnham's actions inadvertently led to Georgiou's death, Michael was devastated. After Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs) took the USS Discovery to the Mirror Universe, Burnham had to pretend to be her evil counterpart. While undercover, Burnham encountered the Mirror Universe Emperor Georgiou , who was much more ruthless than her Prime Universe counterpart.

In the Mirror Universe, Michael Burnham was Emperor Georgiou's adopted daughter.

Emperor Georgiou traveled back to the Prime Universe with the USS Discovery's crew, and she became less of a villain and more of an anti-hero and sometimes reluctant ally. Burnham had looked up to Captain Georgiou, and Emperor Georgiou took on the role of a mother-like figure for Burnham. After Discovery traveled to the 32nd century, Emperor Georgiou began experiencing negative side effects as a result of being displaced in both time and universes. With help from the Guardian of Forever, Georgiou traveled back to "a time when the Mirror Universe and the Prime Universe were still aligned," leaving a tearful Burnham behind.

Michelle Yeoh will reprise the role of Emperor Georgiou as the star of the upcoming Star Trek: Section 31 made-for-streaming film.

Michael Burnham & Cleveland Booker

From friends to lovers to friends to... lovers, again.

When Commander Michael Burnham wore the Red Angel suit and led the USS Discovery into the 32nd century, she arrived one year ahead of the ship. Upon exiting the wormhole, Burnham collided with the ship of Cleveland Booker (David Ajala), beginning what would become one of Michael's most important relationships. Burnham looked for signs of Discovery, while she and Book worked together as couriers. After Discovery finally arrived in the future and made contact with Starfleet and the Federation, Book continued to help however he could.

Regardless of their romantic status, Burnham and Book make a phenomenal team.

Burnham and Booker's relationship became romantic during their year together, but they separated after Book went on a mission of vengeance after the Dark Matter Anomaly destroyed his homeworld of Kwejian in Star Trek: Discovery season 4. In Discovery's fifth and final season, Booker has rejoined the titular ship, and he and Burnham continue to work together as friends. Regardless of their romantic status, Burnham and Book make a phenomenal team and work together seamlessly.

Hugh Culber & Sylvia Tilly

Sometimes counselors need counseling, too..

As a cadet, Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) wanted to be a starship Captain one day, but she began questioning her path in Star Trek : Discovery season 4. As Chief Medical Officer and counselor aboard the USS Discovery, Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) advised Tilly to begin trying new things. Tilly can become friends with almost anyone, and she and Culber quickly developed a rapport. Hugh suggested Tilly for a position training a group of Starfleet Academy cadets.

Lieutenant Tilly later accepted a teaching position at Starfleet Academy helping to oversee the first new class of cadets in a century. Culber and Tilly have continued to talk outside of their more structured therapy appointments , and their positions have somewhat reversed. When Culber began experiencing what he calls a possible "spiritual awakening" in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Tilly provided a listening ear and helped the doctor reframe some of the big ideas he had been grappling with.

Star Trek: Discovery Writer Teases Ramifications For Dr. Culbers Season 5 Trill Takeover

Michael burnham & saru, starfleet's first mutineer and starfleet's first kelpian officer..

As Science Officer of the USS Shenzhou under Captain Georgiou, Saru (Doug Jones) is one of the few characters who knew Michael Burnham before she committed mutiny. While serving on the Shenzhou, they often disagreed as they had very different command styles. As Star Trek: Discovery's later seasons have shown, however, Saru and Burnham complement one another well and have become one of the show's best pairings.

Saru has had one of the most compelling journeys of Star Trek: Discovery' s characters and he grew into a confident and assured starship Captain. Michael Burnham was one of Saru's closest friends and allies throughout this journey, and the two developed an undying respect for one another. Saru's more reserved nature helps temper Burnham's impulsiveness, making the duo an excellent command team.

As seen in Star Trek: Discovery s eason 5, episode 2, "Under the Twin Moons," Burnham and Saru also work well together on away missions, where their trust and confidence in one another makes them a force to be reckoned with.

Michael Burnham & Sylvia Tilly

Star trek: discovery's most surprising pair of bffs..

One of Star Trek: Discovery's longest friendships is also its best. When Michael was first assigned to the USS Discovery after her imprisonment, Cadet Tilly was assigned as her roommate. At first, Tilly was nervous about living with the infamous mutineer Michael Burnham, but the two eventually warmed up to one another despite their contrasting personalities. When the two first met, Tilly wanted to be a starship Captain, and Burnham began mentoring her. As Tilly's confidence grew, she helped Burnham open up more and move on from her complicated past.

The relationships on Star Trek: Discovery are one of the best parts of the show, and Michael Burnham and Sylvia Tilly have become Star Trek's best female friendship.

Throughout Star Trek: Discovery's five seasons, Tilly and Burnham have only grown closer and their friendship has helped both characters grow and evolve. In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 6 , "Whistlespeak," Burnham and Tilly embarked on an away mission that reiterated how well the two work together. Tilly's ability to help others open up and become friends with almost anyone proved to be just as useful as Burnham's ability to think on her feet and get things done. The relationships on Star Trek: Discovery are one of the best parts of the show, and Michael Burnham and Sylvia Tilly have become arguably Star Trek's best female friendship.
