5 Star-Trek-inspired home theaters that even Picard would be jealous of

Joe Donovan

Any orthodox Trekkie will tell you building a shrine means one thing: a badass home theater. We’ve assembled five of our favorite Star-Trek-themed home theaters. From DIY projects to state-of-the-art home installations, Star Trek home theaters boast some pretty impressive features. We’re not alone after all.

The USS Bell

  • Star Trek: Picard’s pilot is available free on YouTube and Pluto TV

Within one ultra-exclusive gated Florida community exists a 35,000-square-foot mansion that feels a little like your very own private resort. The owner is Marc Bell, a producer and former owner of FriendFinder Networks (parent company to Penthouse), who happens to be a verifiable Trekkie. His home theater, named USS Bell, features a movie theater, full bar, and a Ready Room. This is just one of the standouts of Bell’s “complex” that also has a Call of Duty  gaming room, nine-car garage, and its own personal arcade.

The Bridge: DIY Star Trek home theater

This Philadelphia-area home takes the Star Trek home theater idea to a new level. Not only does this look and feel like the Starship Enterprise, it’s a completely DIY project of homeowner Gary Reighn, who spent two years designing and building this 19-by-14-foot theater. The entire project cost around $15,000. Not bad for a space ship, right?

The Evergreen Ultimate Home Theater

Next up is one of the most expensive Trekkie home theaters out there. This one seats nine and even has an official name: “The Evergreen Ultimate Home Theater.” That word u ltimate seems appropriate, but we wouldn’t go so far to say that this one aspires to replicate the specs of the Starship Enterprise. It does, however, provide plenty of A/V brawn, including a horde of monitors along the perimeter and ultra-plush chairs. They’ve even outfitted this home theater with concert-type lighting and motorized entryway doors.

Mike Schroeder’s videophile Star Trek shrine

Mike Schroeder didn’t skimp on the tech when he built his 20-by-50-foot home theater. The Star Trek home theater includes a $130,000 projector from Digital Projection and soundproof wall panels borrowed from airplanes (thus the Starship vibe). The bottom line here is this: It’s better than almost anything else out there, including most professional theaters. Schroeder also hung the ceiling on two-inch springs to completely soundproof the room and provide a killer interstellar ceiling design. We say, turn it up.

Trekking out an entire apartment

It took 10 years for Tony Alleyne to build the Trekkie apartment of his dreams. When the former DJ lost his job, he became an interior designer and used his own apartment as an example of just how far a little elbow grease can take you. He transformed this Leicestershire, UK apartment from average to Starship Enterprise, but not without conflict. The entire project cost an estimated $150,000. Even worse, when Alleyne divorced his wife (who owned the apartment), she ordered him to take down all the glorious Trekkie designs.

JJ Abrams pulled off the unlikely feat of pleasing critics, audiences and diehard Trekkies rebooting the Star Trek franchise.

The surface of ‘Vulcan’ – as it was for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home – is the 745-acre Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park , 10700 West Escondido Canyon Road , near Agua Dulce Springs , about an hour north of Los Angeles .

This is a sly nod to the original TV series which, although largely studio-based, several 1960s episodes – including Shore Leave and Arena – ventured out to find alien landscapes among the awesome rock formations. Named after the 19th century outlaw Tiburcio Vasquez , who hid out here, this outburst of the San Andreas Fault has been used in hundreds of Westerns and sci-fi movies, pop videos and photoshoots – see it in Apache , Alpha Dog , Starship Troopers and as far back as 1935 in Werewolf Of London .

The park is in the high desert north of Los Angeles , between Newhall and Acton, off Route 14.

Star Trek (2009) location: Oviatt Library, Cal-Tech University, Northridge

For the 'Starfleet Academy', digital technology moves the Oviatt Library at Cal-State University, Northridge in Los Angeles ' San Fernando Valley , to sit alongside San Francisco ’s Golden Gate Bridge .

The library had previously featured (as the superhero school) in Sky High and, more down to earth, in Legally Blonde 2 and Lindsay Lohan - Jane Fonda misfire Georgia Rule . On the small screen, sci-fi buffs might have seen it in Star Trek Voyager , Roswell and Battlestar Galactica .

Star Trek (2009) location: Long Beach City Hall, California

It’s in the circular council chamber of Long Beach City Hall , 333 West Ocean Boulevard , alongside Lincoln Park, that Kirk and Spock initially face off when Kirk is accused of cheating in the Kobayashi Maru (the supposedly unwinnable Starfleet training exercise), but are finally decorated after defeating he Romulan attack, and Kirk is appointed captain of the Enterprise ( Los Angeles Metro, Blue Line ).

More mundanely, 'Delta Vega', the ice planet was recreated in the parking lot of the Dodger Stadium , 1000 Vin Scully Avenue , downtown Los Angeles , home of the Los Angeles Dodgers (the car park is where Brian O'Conner ( Paul Walker ) is giving his car a workout at the opening of The Fast and The Furious ).

The USS Enterprise 's gleaming engine room, where the young Scotty ( Simon Pegg ) gets beamed into a cooling pipe, is the Budweiser Brewery Anheuser-Busch Inc, 15800 Roscoe Boulevard , just west of the San Diego Freeway (I-405) in Van Nuys in the San Fernando Valley, while the recently restored 1930s Long Beach Generating Station on Terminal Island became the engine room of the USS Kelvin , aboard which Kirk is born (you can see the plant pre-restoration in Michael Bay ’s The Island , with Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson ) and Next with Nicolas Cage .

A new “ Star Trek ” film is in the works at Paramount with “Andor’s” Toby Haynes on board to direct and Seth Grahame-Smith penning the script, Variety has confirmed.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, the upcoming feature will be an origin story that is set decades before 2009’s “Star Trek,” as well as an expansion of the “Star Trek” universe. J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing.

Popular on Variety

During a Paramount Global investors day presentation in February of 2022, Abrams announced that a new “Star Trek” movie would begin shooting by the end of that year with the Pine-led crew. Pine and his co-stars reportedly had no idea Paramount was moving forward with another “Star Trek” film, which was eventually removed from the studio’s film slate in September of that year.

Haynes recently directed six episodes of the “Star Wars” series “Andor,” starring Diego Luna as the titular role. He also helmed the “Star Trek”-inspired episode of “Black Mirror,” titled “USS Callister.” Haynes is repped by WME and attorney Peter Nelson.

Grahame-Smith is best known as the author of the best-selling novels “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” and “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.” He also wrote and produced 2017’s “The Lego Batman Movie.” Grahame-Smith is repped by WME and attorneys PJ Shapiro and Wendy Kirk.

Deadline was first to report the “Star Trek” news.

Star Trek's Newest Movie Isn't Shy About Its Mission: Impossible Influence

According to a new article in Variety , the upcoming "Star Trek" TV movie "Section 31" includes a younger version of Rachel Garrett , a character last seen on the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Yesterday's Enterprise." Garrett will be played by actress Kacey Rohl. After some extremely nerdy number crunching, one will conclude that "Section 31" takes place in the 2320s, which is a weird timeframe. The lead character of "Section 31" is Empress Philippa Georgiou, played by Michelle Yeoh, and the last time we saw her, she had been whisked away from the year 2258 — her "homebase," as it were — and deposited in the year 3188. After encountering a sentient time portal, Georgiou was next delivered to an unspecified point in history "when the Mirror Universe and the Prime Universe were still aligned." Given what we know about "Star Trek," that could be as long ago as AD 1799.

It seems, however, that she was deposited in the 2320s, which, for context, is about 35 years after "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," but about 35 years before "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

"Section 31" will also be a spy series. Trekkies will be able to tell you that Section 31 is the Starfleet equivalent of the CIA, the organization that handles devious subterfuge and secret infiltration missions. "Star Trek" is ordinarily a very open and diplomatic organization, so the very existence of Section 31 is a moral violation of Starfleet principles. It's a good thing Georgiou hails from the notoriously evil Mirror Universe and is capable of committing whatever evils Section 31 might require.

In the same Variety article mentioned above, Yeoh was quoted comparing the new "Section 31" TV movie to "Mission: Impossible." True to the organization, the movie will be all about subterfuge.

Star Trek: Rogue Nation

Yeoh didn't elucidate further, as the story of "Section 31" is still, as of this writing, under wraps. The only description given so far was from a press release in January that read:

"Yeoh will reprise her fan-favorite role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou — a character she played in "Star Trek: Discovery's"  first season — who joins a secret division of Starfleet. Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, she also must face the sins of her past."

The cast will include Rohl, Omari Hardwick, Sam Richardson, Sven Ruygrok, Robert Kazinsky, Humberly Gonzalez, and James Hiroyuki Liao, although apart from Rohl, none of their characters have been revealed. It is as yet unknown if any of these actors will be also be playing known, legacy characters. "Section 31" was initially conceived as a TV series , but likely for financial reasons, Paramount condensed it into a single movie event. Its release date also hasn't been released.

We do know that Yeoh's "Mission: Impossible" comparison will guarantee a certain tone. The "Mission: Impossible" film series surrounds impressive stunt sequences, twisty stories about ex-spies trying to undermine the world's governments, and dangerous, palm-sized MacGuffins that people will kill to obtain. Yeoh, a trained martial artist, will no doubt have her share of hand-to-hand fight scenes. Empress Georgiou may be from the evil Mirror Universe but in an episode of "Star Trek: Discovery," she proved that she had a conscience after all. Likely, "Section 31" will feature conflicts wherein she is given unethical orders, and then wrestles with the fact that "old her" would have followed them and "new her" desperately doesn't want to.

Further bulletins as events warrant.

10 best kirk and spock moments from tos & movies.

Kirk and Spock's enduring friendship ran through all of Star Trek: The Original Series and movies, and these 10 moments highlight that bond.

The friendship between Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) was a staple of Star Trek: The Original Series and the first six Star Trek films, and there are so many moments that illustrate the bond they shared. As arguably the two most famous Star Trek characters, Kirk and Spock's friendship has stood the test of time. While they have vastly different personalities, their differences complement one another, and they often bring out the best in each other.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 will show the earliest stages of Kirk and Spock's iconic friendship, including how they met. But their friendship is a constant through nearly every episode of Star Trek: The Original Series . While they do not always agree, they have an obvious admiration and respect for one another that shines as one of the best examples of male friendship on television and films. Here are 10 of the best moments of Kirk and Spock's friendship.

10 Kirk and Spock Play Gangster in Star Trek: TOS "A Piece of the Action"

The way Kirk and Spock work together and play off of one another in "A Piece of the Action" underlines how good of friends they are. From Spock remarking on Kirk's poor driving skills to their coordinated outfits and accents, Kirk and Spock are clearly having fun during this episode. While many of the moments on this list focus on more serious moments when either Kirk or Spock's life is in danger, this episode represents the moments where the two of them get to have fun. Spock goes along with most of Kirk's schemes and, in the end, he gets just as into the gangster mindset as Kirk does.

9 Kirk's Worry for Spock in Star Trek: TOS "Errand of Mercy"

In "Errand of Mercy," Kirk and Spock visit a neutral planet Organia near the Klingon border hoping to persuade the people there to resist Klingon occupation. When a Klingon ship arrives unexpectedly, Kirk and Spock find themselves trapped on the planet. They disguise themselves and pretend to be traders, but the Klingon leader, Kor (John Colicos), immediately distrusts Spock. Kirk protests strongly when Kor takes Spock away to be interrogated, but Spock is able to resist the Klingon's mind scanner interrogation device. The rest of the episode contains some great banter as Kirk and Spock work together to inspire the inhabitants of the planet to fight back against the Klingons, only to learn the Organians are evolved, super-powerful beings.

8 Kirk Shows How Much He Cares About Spock in Star Trek: TOS "Journey to Babel"

The Enterprise is called to transport Ambassador Sarek (Mark Lenard) and his wife Amanda (Jane Wyatt) to a conference, and Kirk is surprised to discover that they are Spock's parents. Spock and his father are not speaking because Sarek does not approve of Spock's decision to join Starfleet. When Sarek suffers a heart attack, Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) needs to use Spock's blood for a transfusion. However, before the surgery can take place, Kirk is injured and unable to command the Enterprise. Spock steps up to command and refuses to relinquish the position to save his father. To allow Spock to help Sarek, Kirk retakes his place as Captain despite his injuries. "Journey to Babel" shows how much Kirk cares about Spock and how much Spock cares about the Enterprise and its crew.

7 Kirk and Spock Have Fun in 1986 in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

In Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the crew must travel back in time to 1986 San Francisco to rescue a couple of whales. The crew splits up and Kirk and Spock go in search of these whales, resulting in a rather hilarious jaunt across San Francisco. From misusing profanities to Vulcan-nerve-pinching annoying bus passengers, Kirk and Spock fail at their attempts to blend in, but they do seem to be having a lot of fun. By this point in their story, Kirk and Spock have saved each other's lives multiple times and Kirk has even brought Spock back from the dead. After so many serious moments, it's nice to see Spock and Kirk get back to having fun and saving the galaxy.

6 Kirk's Defense of Spock in Star Trek: TOS "Balance of Terror"

The Star Trek: The Original Series season 1 episode "Balance of Terror" introduces the Enterprise crew to the Romulans, who turn out to be an offshoot of the Vulcans. One of the officers on the bridge begins to suspect Spock may know more about the Romulans than he admits. Kirk defends his friend and has no room for the man's prejudice, telling him to "Leave any bigotry in [his] quarters. There's no room for it on the bridge." While Kirk may sometimes poke fun at Spock's Vulcan tendencies, he clearly has a lot of respect and love for him. Captain Kirk has a lot of great episodes and this is one of his best, in part because his trust in Spock never wavers.

5 Kirk Calls Spock His Brother in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

At the end of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier , Spock laments the loss of his half-brother Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill). Kirk responds that he "lost a brother once" before turning to Spock and saying: "But I was lucky, I got him back." McCoy replies: "I thought you said men like us don't have families." Kirk answers: "I was wrong." This scene underlines the brotherly relationship that these three men have formed over the years, and especially highlights the friendship between Kirk and Spock. In Star Trek: The Original Series , Kirk kept many of his crewmembers at a distance, but by the time of the films, he is more willing to express how much he cares about his friends.

4 Spock's Fear for Kirk in Star Trek: TOS "The Devil in the Dark"

The TOS season 1 episode "The Devil in the Dark" finds Captain Kirk and his crew searching caverns for a dangerous creature that has killed several men. At first, Kirk does not want Spock to join in the search for the creature, but Spock convinces him to change his mind. As they being their search, Spock wishes to simply subdue the beast, but when a cave-in traps Kirk with the creature, Spock urges him to kill it. Though Spock would rather not kill the creature, he would much rather the creature die than Kirk. At various times throughout this episode, Spock displays clear fear for Kirk's safety, going from calling him Captain to shouting for him as Jim.

3 All of Star Trek III: A Search for Spock

While Spock is absent for the majority of the third Star Trek film, the entire story revolves around Kirk's determination to find Spock and bring him back to life. The whole of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock acts as a love letter of sorts to the character of Spock. Kirk not only disobeys direct orders and risks his own life to save Spock, but also destroys the Enterprise in the process. Kirk is willing to risk everything for even the most remote chance that Spock can be brought back. The most heartwarming scene comes at the end of the film after Spock has been restored. Though his memories are fragmented and slow to return, one of the first things Spock remembers is his friend's name. Kirk tells Spock: "You saved the ship. You saved us all. Don't you remember?" Spock thinks about it for a minute, and his expression shifts to one reminiscent of the old Spock before he replies: "Jim. Your name is Jim."

2 Spock's Relief at Seeing Kirk Alive in Star Trek: TOS "Amok Time"

While it may seem odd to include an episode where Spock believes he killed Kirk on this list, Spock's face when he realizes Kirk is still alive says it all. Early in "Amok Time," Kirk and McCoy realize that something is off with Spock, but he refuses to tell them what it is. Despite this, Kirk trusts Spock when he says he needs to get to Vulcan. When Spock finally does tell Kirk what is happening, Kirk disobeys Starfleet's orders in order to get Spock to Vulcan in time to save him. Later, when Spock believes that he has killed Kirk, he is clearly distressed and offers to resign from Starfleet. One of Spock's best moments comes when Dr. McCoy reveals that Kirk is alive and the look on Spock's face radiates relief and pure joy.

1 Spock and Kirk's Goodbye in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Perhaps the most well-known moment of friendship between Kirk and Spock comes at the of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan . Spock sacrifices himself to save the Enterprise and the lives of his friends. As he dies, he utters the famous line: "I have been and always shall be your friend." This, along with Kirk's speech at Spock's funeral serves to illustrate just how close the two friends were. Kirk ends his speech with the lines: "Of my friend, I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most human." What was once an insult to Spock is said here with only love and respect. Though Spock would return in later movies, his death remains one of the most heartfelt and heartbreaking Star Trek deaths. Because of all of these examples and so many more, Kirk and Spock's friendship across Star Trek: The Original Series and its movies remain one of the best examples of male friendship on screen.

Or, they try to. And okay, it turns out the gratuitous beaming was for good reason, story-wise, because in the instant that the pair attempt to beam back to the bridge, Discovery plunges through time, and only their mid-transport timing protects them from the ship’s time-hopping. Everyone else aboard Discovery is experiencing “regular” time travel, as it were, unaware of their movement and remaining “of the time” they jump to.

Everyone, that is, except for Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp), who thanks to his tardigrade DNA infusion all the way back in Season 1, the scientist is bouncing through time like the rest of the crew — but he’s mentally aware of the jumping remains “himself” like Burnham and Rayner.

Like “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad,” this is another episode about time shenanigans centering on Stamets and Burnham (and now also Rayner), but it doesn’t feel like a repeat of the same story so much as a deliberate permutation on a theme. Discovery , the show, is revisiting its past just the same way Burnham revisits her past self here; in both cases, the future versions have grown and changed in ways their past selves could never have imagined.

Who could have guessed, watching the series’ seventh episode, that original showrunner and creator Bryan Fuller would leave after just one season and a majority of the show would end up taking place in 32nd century? Not me, that’s for sure.

(As a side note, I was hoping one of the pasts they visited would be the “Magic” situation, just because come on, who doesn’t want to see what a time loop within a time loop looks like?)

star trek movie room

It takes them all a few time jumps to figure out what’s going on, and a few more after that for all three of them to rendezvous. The second jump takes them back to Discovery mid-construction, sitting in dry dock at the San Francisco Fleet Yards, the Golden Gate Bridge framed nicely in a missing bulkhead section. (Both Star Trek and The Room have one rule: If you’re in San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge must be visible at all times!)

Next jump is to the Season 2-ending battle with Control, and finally with three jumps there’s enough of a pattern visible for Rayner to identify what’s going on and what, exactly, is causing it. First, each time they jump Burnham and Rayner always return to the ready room – the place where they beamed themselves out of time — and second, that little mechanical spider that’s been crawling around the ship since it first detached itself from Adira’s uniform is a Krenim chronophage (yes, those Krenim ) left over from more lawless times  when paralyzing a ship by having it randomly cycle through time was a thing that apparently people did.

After a few more jumps, including one where a past version of Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) happens to save Rayner’s hide, he and Burnham land on an empty, dusty Discovery , abandoned by everyone except the one person who can’t leave: Zora (Annabelle Wallace). Listening to “Que Sera, Sera” and convinced that she’s dreaming, Zora explains that in this future, Discovery remained stuck in its time paralysis long enough for the Breen to get their hands on the Progenitor’s technology.

star trek movie room

It’s a bleak future to visit, but it’s also very fortuitous that they did, because Zora is able to quickly do the math necessary for Stamets — who they finally meet up with in the next time jump –to figure out how to get them out of this. Just build a chroniton stabilizer and squish the bug with it, easy peasy!

And all Burnham has to do is get a component for it from her quarters without being seen. Not so easy as it turns out, as she runs into Book (David Ajala) who is very much in love with Burnham during this time period — and keen to show it. And she, as we all probably suspected, is still very much in love with him and gives herself a brief moment to indulge in that fact.

In their final final jump — this time to early in Lorca’s captaincy — Burnham runs into her much angrier and more jaded younger self; a Michael Burnham who is so barely out of prison that she still doesn’t even have a combadge and who flat-out does not believe this woman in a strange red uniform who claims to be her. Why? Because there’s no way anyone would ever make Michael Burnham a captain .

After a fight in a thankfully empty corridor, our Burnham ends up victorious and heads to the bridge… where she needs to convince everyone that they should listen to her and do something you never really want to do with a warp engine going at maximum speed: intentionally break the warp bubble and slam yourself back into the effects of general relativity.

star trek movie room

Flashbacks are a tried and true way for shows to bring back departed characters, so the choice to include Airiam (Hanna Spear) on the bridge makes sense and is nice for audience members who miss her. What doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense to me is how her presence is used (which is a bit of an unfortunate parallel to her death for me – or at least the impact it was supposed to have).

Burnham knows she needs to convince the crew that she really is herself and that she really is from the future, but instead of, I don’t know, showing them her combadge which is full of 32nd century bells and whistles and exotic alloys that haven’t been invented yet she… convinces Airiam that they know each other because Burnham knows Airiam would sacrifice her life to save the ship? Then someone blurts out a “No she wouldn’t!” like that’s not the first thing any appropriately heroic Starfleet officer would do?

This scene is the one fumble in an otherwise great episode. Two minutes after this weird “I know you and here’s a generic hypothetical that applies to most people in Starfleet to prove it,” Airiam sees Burnham’s fancy holographic combadge and openly gawks at it. See, easily convinced! That would have worked and it wouldn’t have required the show to reexamine the hollowness of Airiam’s death without correcting its mistake.

The fact that Burnham doesn’t have anything better or more personal to say to or about Airiam except “You died, sorry that happened,” underscores just how undeveloped she was as a character. Why bring that up again? But hey, Burnham’s tactic works, and I suppose that’s what really matters here.

Meanwhile, past-Burnham and her era’s Rhys (Patrick Kwok-Choon) show up in engineering, phasers drawn, to try and stop Stamets and this weird guy they’ve never seen before from doing whatever it is that they’re trying to do to the ship. Rayner, solidifying himself as a solid gold example of a favorite character trope of mine — Grumpy Guy who’s a Secret Softie — defuses the situation by being brave as hell (he walks right into Burnham’s drawn phaser) but also emotionally astute.

He doesn’t just tell Burnham personal facts he couldn’t have known if he were really a stranger, he tells her with conviction that she really does deserve to be here on Discovery…  something that sinks to the core of who she is and what she’s battling in this moment in time.

The plan succeeds: the time bug is proverbially squished, and Discovery and her crew are all right back where they belong, minus the six hours they lost during all the jumping. Unfortunately, those six hours were long enough for Moll and L’ak to catch up with them and leave again. Did they find anything, or did they get sick of looking at seemingly empty space and leave? We don’t know yet, so tune in next week.

Which brings us to the beginning of “Face the Strange” — see, I can jump through time too! — when we see Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis) acquiring the bug in the first place. While the Progenitors’ technology is enormous in its power and implications and Moll and L’ak are willing to do just about anything to find it, their motivations seem strictly personal.

Sure, if the way Moll takes revenge on the guy who sells her the chronophage is any indication, they’ll get some personal satisfaction out of seeing the Federation burn, but more than anything they’re in it for their freedom. Freedom from someone or something, certainly – though who or what we still don’t know – but, given the themes in “Face the Strange”, I’d guess freedom from their pasts might be the real goal.

OBSERVATION LOUNGE

  • “Face the Strange” is a reference to the David Bowie classic “Changes.”
  • This episode is a spiritual sequel to Star Trek: Voyager’s “Shattered,” a similar final-season tale which saw Chakotay bouncing through different eras of Voyager adventures.
  • Discovery’s time jumps include visits to the ship’s transit through the Red Angel wormhole (leading to the ship’s crash-landing in “Far From Home” ), a time when the starship was under construction in the San Francisco Fleet Yards, the battle with Control ( “Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2” ), Stardate 865422.4 (during Osyyra’s takover in “There Is A Tide…” ), an unknown date nearly 30 years into the future, a period in early Season 2 (shortly after Jett Reno’s rescue in “Brother” ), a point ahead of the Season 4 premiere after Burnham was promoted to captai), and the encounter with past-Burnham which takes place just ahead of “The Butcher’s Knife Cares Not for the Lamb’s Cry” (denoted by the reference to a still-alive Ellen Landry ).

star trek movie room

  • Retrofit into corridor after Season 2’s set updates, the passage to the left-rear of Discovery’s command chair returns to its Season 1 “blue blinkies” configuration.
  • Captain Pike’s broken wood-and-glass conference table returns to the ready room set during the first time jump, a good touch from the set decoration department.
  • We’ve seen the San Francisco bay many times in Star Trek history… so just where in the heck was Discovery’s dry dock located?
  • A Krenim chronophage — or “time bug” — snared Discovery in a time bubble, from the species behind Star Trek: Voyager’s “Year of Hell.”
  • Season 3-era Reno’s drink of choice is a Vesper martini, served ice cold — and she tells Rayner that he can buy her a drink “at Red’s,” the onboard bar and lounge set added to Discovery during its 32nd century upgrades (though not introduced until Season 4).
  • While the ready room set was not built for Discovery until Season 2, the second time jump confirms the room existed as part of the ship’s original construction… but in a continuity goof, the 32nd century version of the Starfleet emblem remains on the Discovery ready room floor in each different time period, instead of the old version seen in Seasons 1 and 2.

star trek movie room

  • Burnham gives a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it nostalgic smile when Stamets hands her a 23rd century Starfleet communicator, retired after the crew upgraded to 32nd tricombadges in Season 3’s “Scavengers.”
  • Saurian officer Linus (David Benjamin Tomlinson) appears in the Season 1 time period, indicating he boarded Discovery long before his first actual appearance in Season 2’s “Brothers.”
  • Former Discovery cast members Hannah Cheesman and Ronnie Rowe, Jr. return as Airiam and Bryce, Julianne Grossman returns as the original voice of Discovery’s computer. (While Cheesman portrayed Airiam in Season 2, the role was actually portrayed by Sara Mitich in Discovery’s first season.)
  • I forgot just how much Airiam moves like C-3PO. Might have toned down that arm placement there in that wide shot if it were me, yikes.
  • Discovery’s viewscreen may be an open window to space, but it features blast doors which can be closed as necessary.
  • The future time period Burnham and Rayner visit is reminiscent of the alternate future setting in “Calypso,” where Zora and Discovery sat abandoned for nearly 1000 years. Zora even believes she’s having “another dream” when the officers arrive, perhaps hinting that the events of “Calypso” may have been one of Zora’s dreams — as the “Zora-point-of-view” shots mirror moments from that  Short Trek  tale.

star trek movie room

  • This episode marks the first time we’ve seen Discovery’s original hull and nacelle configuration since its big 32nd century upgrade in “Scavengers.”
  • Even living “outside of time,” it’s curious that Stamets can jump back to a time period before his tardigrade DNA injection occurred.
  • Stamets’ tactics for clearing engineering get less and less sophisticated as the episode proceeds — going from making up specific problems with the spore drive containment field to just shouting “I’m grumpy!” It works.
  • “Hey Paul, let’s show ‘em how a couple of old dogs still know the best tricks!” Whoever gave Rayner a used copy of a dictionary of idioms from 1962, I thank you for your service.
  • Rayner’s hand gets the “Timescape” treatment, aging uncomfortably fast while he squashes the time bug — though thankfully avoiding those awful long fingernails.
  • Rayner surmises that Burnham must be the first person in Starfleet to captain a ship she first boarded as a prisoner. He’s probably right, but if we allow for a few technicalities I’d put Seven of Nine in that rare club as well: she’s imprisoned very quickly after boarding Voyager , and while she doesn’t hold a Starfleet rank at the time, she does command that vessel for over a month during the events of “One”.

star trek movie room

Even with all the time jumping and the temporal-relativity-heavy plot, “Face the Strange” is a straightforward hour of television that confidently knows exactly what it wants to do – both in terms of the story and the characters. There are almost no extraneous moments, but the episode doesn’t feel rushed or overly full. The pacing is great: quick enough that we get to jump through a lot of different time periods, but relaxed enough that there’s room for smaller moments of comedy and character work.

The pacing and placement of the more emotional moments is especially effective, with characters examining and confronting their past and present selves in a way that’s emotionally resonant but also truly moves the story forward both at the episode and season levels.

A frequent frustration I have with Discovery is that the emotional beats and plot beats feel like they’re competing with each other for the same space, but with “Face the Strange” it feels like the show has finally figured out a way to have them work together and compliment one another.

The observation lounge or conference lounge was a special designation referring to the briefing room on Excelsior -, Galaxy -, Sovereign -class , and Protostar -class starships as well as on the Reman warbird Scimitar . It included an expansive view of space on one side of the room. ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ", " Chain Of Command, Part I ", " Too Short A Season "; Star Trek Nemesis ; PRO : " Starstruck ")

Starfleet design [ ]

Aboard Starfleet vessels, the observation lounge was used as a meeting place for the ship's senior staff as well as special events and gatherings. Some went to the observation lounge simply for the view. Admiral Jameson usually found himself in the ship's observation lounge, looking out at the stars, just prior to a mission. ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ", " Chain Of Command, Part I ", " Too Short A Season "; Star Trek Nemesis )

On both the Galaxy - and Sovereign -classes, the room was elongated, spanned the entire area aft of the bridge on Deck 1 and featured a large conference table . There was also a series of seven viewports, composed of transparent aluminum . ( TNG : " In Theory ") These viewports spanned from close to the floor to up along the angled ceiling, which faced the rear of the ship. ( TNG : " Lonely Among Us ")

The observation lounge on the Galaxy -class was connected to the bridge through a short, ramped corridor , which originated at the upper starboard alcove of the bridge and led to a door on the starboard side of the conference lounge. Another door, on the port side of the room, led to another corridor, ( TNG : " Datalore ") at the end of which was a turbolift . The shape of the conference table matched the curvature of the exterior hull, and had seating and data pads for ten individuals. The captain usually sat at the head of the table, at either side. In 2365 , two display screens were added and located at either side of the room, behind the table and adjacent to the doors. The observation lounge was decorated by plants , and had two replicator terminals. ( TNG : " The Child ") The room was also fitted with audio and visual recording devices behind a panel. ( TNG : " The Nth Degree ")

USS Enterprise -D [ ]

For a number of years, the wall opposite the windows on the USS Enterprise -D featured an alto-relievo -style display of scale sculptures of six of the Earth vessels previously commissioned as the USS Enterprise as of 2364 . ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ")

In 2366 of an alternate timeline , the battleship Enterprise -D had an observation lounge which omitted the display of Enterprise models and seemed to have only one door. However, the conference table was still a feature of the room, as was a row of windows built into one of the walls. The conference table was at waist height so that occupants stood at the table. One addition was a large tactical graphic of the Enterprise -D, illustrated in blue and yellow on a transparent, vertical stand. ( TNG : " Yesterday's Enterprise ")

The display of Enterprise s was removed, for unspecified reasons, in 2368 . Also at this time, ribbed light vents were added below the windows. ( TNG : " Redemption II ", " Darmok ") The redress of the set for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country gave the production team an excuse to redesign the set for Season 5. The gold ships on the wall were rescued from a dumpster by Ronald D. Moore after he had been tipped off by Michael Okuda that they were being discarded. [3]

In 2369 , the display screens were permanently illuminated, with the port display showing information about the Enterprise systems and the starboard display giving status reports of various Starfleet vessels. ( TNG : " Chain Of Command, Part I ")

The conference lounge served a multitude of purposes; in addition to being a meeting place, it could also host informal parties ( TNG : " The Game ") and held events for " Captain Picard Day ". ( TNG : " The Pegasus ")

In late 2367 , the observation lounge was decompressed after the transparent aluminum of a window was temporarily phased out of normal space by pockets of subspace instability in a dark matter nebula . ( TNG : " In Theory ")

In 2370 , effects due to the D'Arsay archive transformed the observation lounge into a swamp . ( TNG : " Masks ")

Sovereign -class [ ]

The layout of the Sovereign -class observation lounge was similar to that of the Galaxy -class; the conference table was curved in a similar manner, and there was also the same number of seats. However, the room connected directly to the bridge via two doors on either side of the master systems display . Steps inside the lounge led down to the table level. The room also lacked viewscreens during the early 2370s .

USS Enterprise -E [ ]

In 2373 , the USS Enterprise -E conference lounge also had a "past Enterprise s" display, though it took the form of a large glass case enclosing seven full models on stands (the Enterprise -D being the most recent). The display was damaged when Captain Jean-Luc Picard smashed the case with a phaser rifle in a fit of hysteria following an attack from his one-time abductors, the Borg . ( Star Trek: First Contact )

By 2379 , the case was split to either side of a new, large computer terminal and the doors were relocated. ( Star Trek Nemesis )

'Star Trek: Discovery' season 5 episode 4 uses time travel to remember the past 5 seasons

It's pretty obvious watching this episode that the cast and crew, at the very least, strongly suspected that this was going to be the last season of "Discovery" when it was written.

You're not seeing double…well, actually you are, as 23rd century Burnham must fight her-32nd-century-self.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5, episode 4

With the news that "Star Trek: Lower Decks" is ending after its current season, that really only leaves "Strange New Worlds" as the last remaining Nu-Trek series currently airing on television.

And, a word to the wise: If you're a die-hard fan of " Discovery ," make sure you have your own physical media, 'cause no one likes being at the mercy of whatever an overpaid television executive thinks. You're welcome. Moreover, after this final season of "Discovery," we're going to have until wait until next year for the next season of " Strange New Worlds ." It's all starting to feel a bit like "Game of Thrones" all over again.

Episode four, entitled "Face the Strange," is without a doubt the best entry so far in the fifth season, and one can't help but wonder after watching exactly when the cast and production crew were first informed that this would be the last season, because it was definitely before this episode was actually written. The reason? It is, for all intents and purposes, a 60-minute, time-travel-powered, postscript-style reminiscence of all elements of all five seasons — or as much as you can cram into an hour — and what a rollercoaster ride it's been.

So when Alex Kurtzman or Michelle Paradise or whoever it is that actually has authority in the writer's room entered said room, put down their grande iced sugar-free vanilla half-double decaffeinated half-caff latte with soy milk and a twist of lemon in their Paramount-branded 40oz Stanley Clean Slate Quencher H2.0 Flowstate™ Tumbler and announced, "Wouldn't it be great to revisit chapters from seasons one, two, three and four?" no doubt everyone cheered. "And how will this be possible?" asked Kurtzman, to which an eager-beaver intern no doubt excitedly thrust their hand up into the air and exclaimed, "Why, time travel , of course!"

"Quite right," replied Kurtzman (in our imaginations, at least), adding, "But it can be for one episode, so it has to be an isolated, self-contained form of time travel." Thus was conceived the "Time Bug," and with it came a ton of technobabble to precisely explain its parameters. Although quite why Zora didn't detect it was not addressed. Also, you know, transporters.

But this clever Time Bug, which can manipulate time in just about any way that's convenient for the writers to overcome any potential chronological complications — like life-changing paradoxes — came onboard the USS Discovery by way of that shifty Malinne "Moll" Ravel (Eve Harlow), who managed to infiltrate the Trill homeworld undetected, as we saw last week .

As a result, we get reminder glimpses of Michael Burnham's first coming aboard the USS Discovery way, way, way back in season one, complete with appropriate uniforms and everything. We get a fleeting reminder of the Red Angel and the battle with Control , naturally The Burn gets a mention, and there's even a not-very-subtle nod to the short-Trek " Calypso ." It's all a little bit like a Greatest Hits album that doesn't include any of the tracks that you actually liked, being played at 45 instead of 33. Remember vinyl?

Since it's now obvious that this season was written after the cancellation announcement had been made to the cast and crew, the single most important question is, Will the show benefit from that, or will it suffer? Are the remaining six episodes going to be a drawn-out epilogue, tied loosely together with a mostly lame plot? Or, will advance knowledge of the show's future actually serve the writers well, allowing them to produce something above and beyond the normal level of writing?

There's even a very entertaining scene, in which 23rd-century Burnham must fight her 32nd-century self. Of course, the illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator fitted to the space bug prevents any changes from affecting the timeline, so you know, phew .

Most of the original Discovery bridge reappear, as close to how they looked seven years ago as possible, and even Lt. Cmdr. Airiam (played by Sara Mitich in the first season and Hannah Cheesman in the second) makes a cameo, so that's nice. Also, we can really see as Sonequa Martin-Green flips between her two Burnhams just how effective that dreadlock hair piece that she wears through this season actually is. Half the show's budget probably went to that.

It's a fun filler episode, and, even if it doesn't advance the plot an inch, it does allow character development to take place, particularly between Burnham and Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie). Arguably the biggest surprise was that the writers were able to resist putting Captain Pike (Anson Mount) into this episode.

Recap/Review: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Gets The Timing Right In “Face The Strange”

Well, this clip shows that you can produce slick marketing that spends 20 minutes…saying pretty much nothing. Wil Wheaton continues to show his impeccable taste in footwear, though. I did get a kick out of Whoopi Goldberg’s snark.

Yep that pretty much said nothing. About the only thing I agreed with this video about are the VFX.

I’ve long ago stopped watching the ready room. Too much fluff and not enough substance.

You expected more out of a fan-service aftershow produced by the same “network” that brings you the show itself?

Yeah this was very…meh.

I fast forwarded through half of the SMG interview. Just felt like the ultimate puff piece.

I don’t think it was supposed to be anything other than a puff piece – just marketing to remind everyone the new season is a week away.

Still it was a bore fest. Why not show an exclusive scene or something? That’s what this show usually does.

Why does this make me think, since they’re promising surprises, that Guinan will show up this season? Her species is fairly long lived.

That might be a stretch. Guinan is already several hundred years old during the time of TNG/PIC. I mean I wouldn’t be surprised, but I think we’d be more likely to see her in the S31 film.

Enough cameos please.

True, but they’ve never established the upper limit on an El-Aurian lifespan yet. They once described Guinan as the Star Trek Yoda.

They just introduced Lanthanites – who supposedly have lived on Earth since the time of Pythagoras. Wonder if Pelia could show up…

Good points, that’s why I said before I wouldn’t be surprised. I do think it would be a hard sell. I mean, there are other El-Aurians out in the universe. Let’s meet a different one. Or, if Guinan is somehow used, then maybe tie her to the season-long mystery.

Star Trek Prequel Movie In The Works With Star Wars Director

Toby Haynes, who directed episodes of Black Mirror, Doctor Who, and Andor, is lined up to make a Star Trek movie.

By Eddie Makuch on April 11, 2024 at 12:06PM PDT

A Star Trek prequel movie is in the works with Star Wars director Toby Haynes attached to direct, Paramount announced during CinemaCon. This has been rumored since January , and now it's confirmed. The movie is set for release sometime in 2025.

Haynes previously directed episodes of Doctor Who, Black Mirror, Sherlock, and the Star Wars series Andor. Collider reported on these details from CinemaCon.

Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote The Lego Batman Movie, is writing the untitled Star Trek film. Haynes has never directed or written a Star Trek movie, but he directed Black Mirror's Star Trek-inspired USS Callister episode.

The film is said to be an "origin story" that will take place prior to the events of 2009's Star Trek, which took place in 2255 and was itself an origin story. This likely means it will feature a different cast. The stars of the latest series, including Chris Pine, Karl Urban, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana, have been rumored to be coming back for a fourth film in their series, but it hasn't happened yet.

2016's Star Trek Beyond is the latest entry in the main Star Trek movie series, but the franchise has lived long and prospered on streaming with the TV shows Picard and Strange New Worlds.

The 2009 Star Trek reboot and its 2013 sequel Into Darkness were directed by JJ Abrams, before he handed off directing duties to Justin Lin for Star Trek Beyond. The three movies collectively earned around $1.2 billion at the global box office.

In addition to Pine, Saldana, and Quinto, the latest Star Trek movie series featured John Cho as Sulu and Anton Yelchin as Chekov. Yelchin tragically died in 2016 at the age of 27 after a motor vehicle accident in his driveway.

When you have William Shatner , aka Captain James T. Kirk, on your show, you get to ask the Star Trek questions you’ve always wanted answered.

That’s what Bill Maher managed to do on Friday’s Real Time , as he probed one of pop culture’s most interesting moments — the interracial kiss between Captain Kirk and Lt. Uhura.

Bill maher rounds up the usual suspects in 'real time' focus on phones and woke.

Maher also marveled how far Shatner fell from grace after the first run of Star Trek was canceled after three seasons. Shatner talked about watching the actual moon landing from a pasture while in his truck, his base of operations after a divorce and a lull in work.

How did you fall so fast? Maher asked. “With great precision,” Shatner joked, adding that it was just “circumstances of life.”

Of course, those days are gone for Shatner. He is the subject of the new documentary,  You Can Call Me Bill, and the artist behind the upcoming digital album, So Fragile, So Blue, which he recorded live with the National Symphony Orchestra.

He’s also planning a trip to Antarctica, another of his efforts to explore and spotlight his efforts in climate change.

Of the latter, “There’s no way out except through technology,” Shatner said. “There’s a wave coming.” It’s one reason he may consider once again going into space, he said, as a way to “promulgate the idea that there’s so much going on by science and scientists to correct global warming.” He added, “There’s an element of hope I will cling to.”

Maher wrapped up the segment with a mention of Shatner’s age (93) and compliments on how well he looks.

“I don’t mind when you say my age,” Shatner said. “But when they clap…”

After Shatner, Maher had a panel discussion with Piers Morgan ,  New York Post  columnist and host of the YouTube channel’s P iers Morgan Uncensored , and  Gillian Tett , provost of King’s College, Cambridge, and columnist at the  Financial Times .

They also talked about a protest in Dearborn Michigan that featured chants of “Death to America.” Maher pushed back on those at the protest who said, “The entire system has to go.”

“No, it doesn’t,” Maher countered. “I like our system. I’ve always liked America and thought death to it was bad.”

In Maher’s “New Rules” editorial, he pointed out the falsehoods about Canada and some progressive European countries where the idyllic myth doesn’t jibe with reality, resulting in what Maher termed “zombie lies.”

Maher pointed out several ways that these countries are faring worse in housing, health care, and on immigration issues

“I need to cite you as a cautionary tale: yes, you can move too far left, and you push others to the extreme right,” he said. “Calling something racist doesn’t solve the problem,” Maher said. That opens the door to someone conservative who will act, and “Who I promise, you’re not going to like.”
