The Afghan Whigs are an alternative rock band from Ohio, US who formed in 1986 and since their inception have influenced the likes of Gaslight Anthem, The National and Jimmy Eat World.
Rising from the ashes of his former band The Black Republicans, Greg Dulli (vocals, guitar) came together with John Curley (bass) and Steve Earle (drums) to form The Afghan Whigs in 1986. The trio bonded through their mutual love for good old R&B and the first song they rehearsed as a collective was a cover of The Temptations track “Psychedelic Shack”.
In 1988 the band released their debut self-titled album on their own label, Ultrasuede. The following year they signed to Sub Pop where they would record their second album “Up In It” (1990) recorded by Nirvana producer Jack Endino. The album served favourably on college radio stations with the track “Retarded” while critics praised its brutal honesty complimented by the powerfully dramatic rhythms. Despite not achieving chart success, the album paved the way for The Afghan Whigs as they were slowly evolving into the monumentally inspiring band they would later become. To support the album release, the band embarked on a package tour across North America with the masters of grunge Mudhoney and Bullet Volta.
Their 1992 album “Congregation” saw the band incorporate elements of psychedelic punk into their already punchy rock tones, finally solidifying their distinctive sound. Tracks “Conjure Me” and “Turn on the Water” featured heavily on MTV as they picked out The Afghan Whigs as the ones to watch.
The increasing popularity extending from the MTV exposure led to the band signing a lucrative deal with Elektra Records in 1993. Locking themselves away at Ardent Studio (who accommodated Bob Dylan and Led Zeppelin to name a few) the band worked on their major label debut and produced the album “Gentlemen” later that year. The album featured the top 20 track “Debonair” and “Fountain and Fairfax”. As The Afghan Whigs became ever more present in the public eye, the band appeared on several film soundtracks.
In 1996 the band released their fifth studio album “Black Love” which revealed a much darker insight into Dulli’s psyche discussing themes of paranoia and murder with tracks like “Blame Etc” and “Crime Scene Part One”. The album peaked at number 79 on the Billboard charts and during the promotion cycle the band opened for Neil Young. A combination of the label’s unhappiness at the lack of chart success and the unveiling of several shady dealings led to the label parting ways with The Afghan Whigs in 1998.
In no time at all, the band signed with Columbia Records to produce the 1998 album “1965” which saw The Afghan Whigs further diversify their sound as they blended soul and rock with tracks “Somethin’ Hot”, “Uptown Again” and “Crazy”. The band went onto to support Aerosmith and whilst on the album promotion tour Dulli was seriously attacked outside a show resulting in him slipping into a two month coma. Once he had recovered, The Afghan Whigs went straight back on tour.
In 2001 the band went on a five year hiatus and returned briefly in 2006 to release their greatest hits album “Unbreakable: A Retrospective 1990-2006”. Five years later The Afghan Whigs announced their permanent return in 2011 with a string of festival appearances at: Lollapalooza, Primavera and SXSW.
For the first time in 16 years, the band had produced new material in the form of “Do The Beast” in 2014 which peaked at number 34 in the US charts. With an extensive career spanning over twenty years, The Afghan Whigs have become an instrumental band in the evolution of the alternative rock genre, inspiring generations to come.
Live reviews
Not every rock band can transform its strongest songs and curated covers into something even more powerful live. The Afghan Whigs started doing it decades ago. They took a break about 15 years ago, and reemerged in 2012 - but this is no 90s nostalgia show. The band's primary creative force and lead singer, Greg Dulli, never really left. His other projects - The Twilight Singers and Gutter Twins (with Mark Lanegan) filled that void and all have proven to be great live bands in their own right. The Afghan Whigs hit the stage each and every night with boundless energy. A potent mix of strong vocals, sensuality and driving guitars power songs like "Parked Outside" from the latest album Do to the Beast or "Something Hot" from 1965. Whether you know every song or not, you'll be compelled to give them your full attention. The Afghan Whigs originally hail from, Cincinnati, Ohio, but their touring band has evolved into a collection of some of the best musicians from Los Angeles and New Orleans. If you're lucky, you might even be treated to a horn section, giving extra funk to songs like "Blame, etc." or "John The Baptist".
Tickets to the occasional smaller venue shows, like Bowery Ballroom in NYC sell out quickly. Expect an engaged, hot, passionate crowd, especially near the front of the stage. As part of their long-time, dedicated fan base, I've been to every NYC show since 1993. Set lists change frequently, so if you don't hear your favorite song one night, be sure to come back again. They will often play their first alt rock radio hit "Debonair", and maybe mix in a song from Jesus Christ Superstar or some Prince. Expect a full-on live experience, that's often unpredictable and always worth the price of admission.

Behemoth: any creature or thing of monstrous size or power.
The Afghan Whigs are a musical behemoth. Stalking onstage at around 9pm, the 6 piece band (dressed almost entirely in black) launched into the sleazy thump of "Parked Outside". Following with "Matamoros", the band really started to open up.
The set mixed their newest material with songs from Gentleman, Black Love, 1965 and Do to the Beast and the pace never let up. Barely a big “hit” was missed. Gregg Dulli proceeded over the congregated fans, howling like a man possessed one minute, cooing softly the next with the band thrashing and bucking behind him. The sound in the ABC was very well mixed. We were stood under the giant glitter ball and the three guitars of Dulli, Jon Skibic and Dave Rosser were balanced nicely and Rick Nelson’s various cello, violin and piano parts filtered through when needed. Cully Symington’s slinky drums meshed with John Curley’s thundering bass to provide a solid foundation and the Whig’s trademark dirty grind. The stand out groove had to be “Uptown Again”. Dulli’s vocals were pitch perfect throughout the whole night no matter how hard he roared. Special props should go to Dave Rosser as well for covering Van Hunt’s soulful parts from the album.
The Whigs shredded the stage at Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom last night. I've seen hundreds of shows there over the past 20 years and this one will remain as one of my favourites. There was a massive wall of sound that was set up perfectly from the board. The energy of the band was non-stop and the crowd showed its appreciation.
The show was incredible! Afghan Whigs played their hearts out. I could feel their love for what they do and their passion was splashed all over their music. Amazing! Will definitely see them again!
This was a really good show with fantastic musicians and Greg's voice was perfect! Even my man really enjoyed it, although he only knew 2 songs :-) I'll be there again next time!

In a statement, The Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli shared a personal anecdote about his longtime fandom of The Church. “I was an 18-year-old college freshman laying in bed listening to WVXU late one night when I heard a song that I described later as sounding like David Bowie fronting The Byrds. Thankfully they back announced ‘The Unguarded Moment’ by The Church and I was on my way to buying my first import. Soon after I bought two more after learning of The Blurred Crusade and Seance . It was official. I loved The Church. Three years later, the four kids who were about to become The Afghan Whigs played ‘One Day’ by The Church in John Curley’s living room and we were off and running…”

HOW DO YOU BURN? AVAILABLE NOW!
The Afghan Whigs have announced their first studio album in five years How Do You Burn?, which is set for release on September 9th via Royal Cream/BMG. How Do You Burn? ’ , their ninth album overall and following on from the brace of widely-acclaimed records they’ve made previously since re-grouping in 2012, ‘ Do to the Beast’ (2014) and ‘ In Spades’ (2017). ‘ How Do You Burn? ’ picks up the baton laid down by each of those records and runs it to the horizon.
TRACK LIST: I’ll Make You See God The Getaway Catch A Colt Jyja Please, Baby, Please A Line Of Shots Domino and Jimmy Take Me There Concealer In Flames
For his supporting cast, Dulli called upon several serial collaborators including the late Mark Lanegan, who was a regular in Dulli’s Twilight Singers , a partner in The Gutter Twins and a close friend. Lanegan makes his Afghan Whigs debut singing backup vocals on two tracks. “It was Mark who named the album,” Dulli remarked.
Susan Marshall , who sang on the Whigs album 1965 , returns to the fray for “Catch A Colt,”one of the album’s standout tracks, loose-limbed like ‘Some Girls’-era Rolling Stones and with the liquid polyrhythms of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Tusk’.
The multi-talented Van Hunt , who toured with the Whigs in 2012 and guested on ‘ Do to the Beast ’, brings his stacked-up, wall-of-sound vocals to both the plunging, voodoo-blues of ‘Jyja’ and the audacious ‘Take Me There’ , transforming the latter, says Dulli, “into this feral gospel song. We sing really well together, but what Van does production-wise… it’s unrelenting.”
Then there’s Marcy Mays , lead vocalist on ‘My Curse’, the torch-song highlight of 1993’s seminal ‘ Gentlemen ’ album, reprising her role here on the celestial ‘Domino and Jimmy’ , playing Stevie Nicks to Dulli’s Lindsey Buckingham. “I wrote that song with Marcy in mind,” says Dulli. “No-one sounds like her; she’s got an incredibly unique, emotional and evocative voice.”
The Afghan Whigs – Dulli, Curley, Nelson, Keeler and with Christopher Thorn now joining the band on guitar – will take ‘ How Do You Burn? ’ out on the road this year. Beyond that, says Dulli, their future is gloriously wide open.

“Three decades after forming, Afghan Whigs remain vital for its willingness to ignore boundaries” New York Times
“Dulli rides the band’s blend of R&B insinuation, hip-hop cool and hard rock invasiveness into corners of experience where few rockers of his generation have rested” NPR
Today, The Afghan Whigs release an electrifying new single “I’ll Make You See God,” their first new music since 2017’s album In Spades. The propulsive, driving rock track is also featured in the upcoming PlayStation game Gran Turismo 7 (out March 4th) and the single is being released via Royal Cream/BMG. Listen to the track here: https://theafghanwhigs.lnk.to/IMYSGPR .
The Afghan Whigs – comprising frontman/guitarist Greg Dulli, bassist John Curley, multi-instrumentalist Rick Nelson, drummer Patrick Keeler and new guitarist Christopher Thorn (Blind Melon) – are also announcing a brief run of U.S. tour dates beginning May 11th in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The band will be hitting intimate venues across the east coast, midwest and southeast including Nashville’s The Basement East, Atlanta’s Terminal West and culminating in a performance at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn on May 25th. Tickets for all shows will go on sale 2/25/22 .
“I’ll Make You See God” is a combustible head-banger, showcasing Greg Dulli’s powerhouse vocals, still soaring after thirty years since the band’s inception in 1986. “That’s one of the hardest rock songs we’ve ever done,” remarked Greg Dulli. “It was written and performed on sheer adrenalin.”
From their inception in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1986, The Afghan Whigs have never played by the rules of convention. Against the plaid-and-grunge-shaded backdrop of the early-to-mid-‘90s, the Whigs stood apart from their contemporaries by virtue of attiring in suits and being way more likely to slide on up into a Marvin Gaye groove than rehash a Black Sabbath riff.
They stand apart still. Twenty-six years down the line, bands simply aren’t supposed to be making the most vaulting and thrilling music of their lives. Returning from an 11-year hiatus in 2012, the Whigs have brightened their canon with two more widely-acclaimed records digging yet deeper into the rich seam of their influences, ‘ Do to the Beast ’ (2014) and ‘ In Spades ’ (2017).

Vodka Museum Tour with transport (excursion only)
Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other
Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.
Moscow Tours centering on Russian History
Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.
Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers
What is the best time to visit moscow.
Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide
How many days are enough in Moscow?
If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.
Do they speak English in Moscow?
As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.
Is it safe to travel to Moscow?
It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.
