Concert Review: The Doobie Brothers 50th Anniversary Tour, Los Angeles

By Martine Ehrenclou
Legendary rock and roll band The Doobie Brothers put on a true fan-favorite show at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles on October 2nd. Celebrating their 50th Anniversary, the Northern California band delivered 26 songs from their albums dating back to 1971, including three from their newest album Liberté .
The 6000-seat venue was packed with enthusiastic fans. Everyone was excited to see the long-running rock and roll band with founding members Patrick Simmons on guitar/vocals and Tom Johnston on guitar/vocals, joined by long-time band member multi-instrumentalist/vocalist John McFee, vocalist/keyboardist Michael McDonald, saxophonist Marc Russo, drummer Ed Toth, percussionist Marc Quiñones and bassist/vocalist John Cowan.
The lights dimmed and a spotlight highlighted Michael McDonald seated behind his keyboards as his unmistakable piano tones flooded the venue. The stage lit up as Simmons and McFee appeared front and center playing acoustic guitars. Johnston joined them and handled lead vocals on “Nobody,” from the band’s self-titled 1971 debut. His voice solid and strong, his guitar riffs were spot on. The band launched into a retrospective of their hits over 50 years.
With Russo on sax, “Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While)” was followed by “Here To Love You,” the funky piano-driven number sung by the soulful Michael McDonald. From their album Minute By Minute , McDonald and the band rocked the house, the band’s signature harmonies and top-tier musicianship spurring on the audience’s enthusiasm.

Wasting no time, the band launched into one hit song after the other without a break. After “Dependin’ On You,” a rip-roaring “Rockin’ Down The Highway” followed. With three guitarists on stage, at times it was a bit of a six-string feast.
As impressive as Simmons, Johnston and McFee were that night, Michael McDonald received more of the fans’ lively appreciation. Among the hits that garnered thundering applause were “You Belong To Me,” “Takin’ It To The Streets” and “What a Fool Believes,” songs McDonald scored with the band in the late 70s.
The four-time Grammy Award-winning band has not lost a step with their harmonies, lead vocals and performance. The Doobie Brothers are beloved band by fans. Setting out to give the crowd what they came for—a string of hits, they certainly delivered. “South City Midnight Lady” featured a talented McFee on pedal steel.
After seven songs, Simmons, Johnston and McDonald welcomed everyone and thanked them for coming. Johnston said to the crowd, “We’ve had the privilege of being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We couldn’t have done it without you all.” And the audience whistled, yelled and clapped. Johnston then introduced the band.
McDonald’s piano kicked off the next tune, along with Russo on sax, “It Keeps You Runnin’” from their album Takin’ It To The Streets . There was a real connection between these two musically, a synergy, bringing to mind behind-the-scenes jamming. The harmonies on this are still lovely, the melody still moving. An enduring tune if there ever was one. That’s what The Doobie Brothers are made of—outstanding songs that stand the test of time.
Patrick Simmons, Ed McFee, by Martine Ehrenclou
At this point, I took stock of the band and how impressive it is that the musicians are still at the top of their game and have released so many mega hits. They’ve maintained their identity, even with the change of sound with the addition of Michael McDonald in 1975. You could say they are a band with two distinctive sounds—the first was folk, Country and R&B, and with McDonald, the addition of Soul. Even with that, The Doobie Brothers kept on releasing ever-popular songs. They’ve sold over 40 million records worldwide.
Toward the end of an exhilarating musical experience, the band rocked on “Jesus Is Just Alright.” With Johnston center stage, his vocals powerful with grit, Simmons and McFee performed on either side of him. The entire band sang in unison on choruses, as did the audience. Simmons and Johnston traded vocals, and Johnston ripped on a guitar solo. It was equally moving to hear the entire audience sing along, almost perfectly, remembering every word, the phrasing. A watershed moment of the evening.
It’s more than staying power for The Doobie Brothers. They are still an exceptional band even though most of their popularity was in the 70s. With hits like “What a Fool Believes,” “Long Train Runnin’” and “China Grove,” which they performed toward the end of their set, their talent as songwriters shines bright.
Marc Russo, Michael McDonald
The encore included Simmons leading the way on “Black Water,” from their 1974 album What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits . Simmons on 12-string acoustic guitar and lead vocals, McFee played violin. Simmons shined on this tune, and their four-part harmonies were beautiful.
Over the roar of the audience, Johnston shouted, “One last song!” They performed “Listen to the Music” from Toulouse Street. The entire audience chimed in on the chorus. What a night.

The Doobie Brothers return to 50th anniversary tour in peak form with Michael McDonald
BRISTOW, Virginia – Sitting under a tent backstage, Patrick Simmons and Tom Johnston offer a simple philosophy about The Doobie Brothers’ 50-year tenure.
“The songs,” Johnston says. “When people get up and sing back at you, that’s the magic part.”
Simmons also credits authenticity.
“It’s almost a novelty to see a band that sings and plays and doesn’t have a big dance production that’s part of the show,” he says, smiling behind his mask.
Indeed, nary a dancer nor acrobat was witnessed at The Doobie Brothers’ Friday night show at Jiffy Lube Live in Virginia, the band’s first performance since a mini-residency in Las Vegas in May , as well as its continuation of the 50th anniversary tour that played its first round last fall.
The veteran rockers planned to kick off this new tour leg last week, but as goes COVID-19, so do postponements. Despite the caution being practiced backstage – masks a must, social distancing when possible – and the monklike existence the guys practiced while in Vegas (“I didn’t go anywhere except to walk to CVS,” Johnston says, while Simmons admits to missing meals out with the gang), the virus insinuated its way into the Doobie ranks. Five dates have been rescheduled; just another speed bump for a tour that, like dozens of others, was originally planned for 2020.
Turning 50 in 2022: Albums from Elton John, Eagles, Rolling Stones and more
The specialness of the anniversary run – which runs through October – is partially to celebrate the Doobies’ achievement of still attracting thousands of fans to blissfully sing along with their chameleonic catalog. But it’s also about the inclusion of Michael McDonald.
McDonald joined the band in 1975 and helped recast their sound. He departed in 1982 for a thriving solo career, but McDonald always maintained an amicable relationship with his bandmates. Given that he last toured with them in the ‘90s, his return is an unmistakable draw.
“I think Mike is having a great time,” Simmons says, while he and Johnston concur that a possible worldwide tour extension in 2023 – South America, Australia and Japan are in discussion – makes sense since McDonald is an appealing part of the package.
A couple of hours after talking, Simmons and Johnston cede the spotlight to McDonald to saunter onstage first, slipping behind his keyboards to unfurl the opening of “Nobody.”
The rest of the frontline – Simmons, Johnston and guitarist John McFee – join him as the band segues into “Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While),” offering fleet-fingered guitar playing from the spindly Simmons, a gravelly yell from McDonald and impeccable singing from Johnston, his voice like honey mixed with grit.
Honoring Taylor Hawkins: The Foo Fighters will pay tribute to the drummer this fall
For the next 2½ hours, The Doobie Brothers enthrall a packed amphitheater with album cuts (“South City Midnight Lady,” “Here to Love You”) and mellifluous radio hits (“Rockin’ Down the Highway,” “Minute By Minute,” “What a Fool Believes”). They present three new songs from last fall’s “Liberté” album – their first since 2014 – and in a rare scene, hardly anyone in the audience rushes out for a bathroom break, possibly because the tracks, particularly “Easy” and “Better Days,” are pleasant and comfortable additions to their oeuvre.
McDonald’s distinctive lead vocals remain a combination of smoke and silk and the band’s supporting cast – bassist John Cowan, percussionist Marc Quiñones, drummer Ed Toth and saxophonist Marc Russo – are all seasoned aces.
Even without the tag of a 50th anniversary edition , this tour showcases The Doobie Brothers in peak form, with both their vocals – especially the scintillating harmonies that anchor “Black Water” and “Listen to the Music” – and musical dexterity undiminished. It’s an admirable feat considering the core players are all in their early 70s and lifelong road dogs.
But more than three weeks of rehearsals last summer and an indisputable affection for performing keeps The Doobie Brothers motivated.
“The band really sounds great,” Simmons says. His eyes crinkle as he smiles.
“Not that I want to brag," he says.

The Jonas Brothers tour brought the hits and a song for a newly engaged couple to Phoenix
T he Jonas Brothers were clearly enjoying the opportunity to go a bit off script in downtown Phoenix on Saturday, April 6, after eight months of touring a tightly-scripted overview of their career that found them playing five albums a night, at times combining the tiniest taste of as many as nine songs in a single medley.
They played portions of 64 songs when Five Albums. One Night. The World Tour hit Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix in September 2023 .
Seven months later, their headlining set at the 2024 March Madness Music Festival at Margaret T. Hance Park found them trimming the sails to 18 songs, including one they hadn't meant to play but slipped in to celebrate a young couple getting engaged as Joe Jonas was singing the perfectly suitable "Camp Rock" soundtrack ballad "Gotta Find You."
Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.
It was a brilliant example of living in the moment, Nick Jonas teeing up a fantastic rendition of Earth, Wind & Fire's "September" with "We had another song picked, but we're gonna switch it up just to fully celebrate this moment. This is our best version of being a wedding band, so this is our gift to you."
And it sounded amazing, hitting all the necessary high notes with joyous aplomb.
According to setlist.fm , this is only the fifth time they've covered "September" in concert.
'Did you guys propose?': Jonas Brothers sing to couple who got engaged at Phoenix concert
The Jonas Brothers played 'Cake By the Ocean' and 'S.O.S.'
And yet, it felt like a perfectly natural extension of their evolution from the effervescent power-pop of the Disney Channel classics "S.O.S" and "Year 3000" to the falsetto-laden funk of "Summer Baby," "Waffle House" and the euphorically received rendition of "Cake By the Ocean," a massive hit for the Joe Jonas side project DNCE that's earned more than 1.5 billion streams on Spotify.
They set the tone for Saturday's performance with "Celebrate!," a suitably welcoming highlight of their latest album, 2023's "The Album," and kept the focus squarely on their recent output as they followed through with current single "Strong Enough" and 2020's "What a Man Gotta Do."
Then, Joe broke the news that "you're all gonna be on TV," further encouraging fans with a helpful reminder that "the crazier you go, the better chances you're on TV."
And in case that didn't do it, he added, "And I really don't want you to let me down. I was born in Case Grande, Arizona. And I need Arizona to show up."
With that, the stage was set for "Waffle House," another highlight of "The Album."
Nick, Kevin and Joe Jonas: Disney heartthrobs to enduring headliners
It's kind of amazing to witness three brothers who launched their careers as Disney Channel heartthrobs put the focus squarely on their recent catalog while still inspiring the sort of adulation that greeted their earliest efforts.
Few teen idols have managed the transition to adulthood as successfully as these three brothers.
At the same time, there was no mistaking the excitement in the air when Joe announced their intention to "take you back a couple years" before blowing the dust off "S.O.S.," their first Top 20 single, released in 2007, which they followed with another pop hit from the same self-titled breakthrough, "Play My Music."
"That one was from a movie called 'Camp Rock,'" Joe told the fans, as though they needed a reminder (they did not). "I feel like we should play one more from that era."
That's when they launched into a second "Camp Rock" classic, "Gotta Find You," inspiring one of many massive singalongs.
More Jonas Brothers tour highlights: 'Lovebug' and 'Year 3000'
Before the set was through, they'd reached back to their first Top 40 single, a cover of Busted's "Year 3000," and worked their way through early hits as undeniable as "When You Look Me in the Eyes," "Burnin' Up" (on which the fans supplied the guest rap) and a truly transcendent performance of "Lovebug" (my pick for the song that every doubter needs to hear).
They ended the set with a solid reminder that they've made it through the inevitable downturn in their fortunes as teen idols and emerged victorious with hits as worthy as "Sucker" and the Marshmello collaboration "Leave Before You Love Me."
It's rare to see teen idols earn a second act. The Jonas Brothers have not only managed to cross the divide, they've done it in a way that seems as natural as the Beatles going from "I Want to Hold Your Hand" to "Rubber Soul."
There was a lengthy break in the action when someone in the audience appeared to require medical assistance and the Jonas Brothers paused the concert, leaving the stage for several minutes while security tended to the person.
But whatever momentum that cost them was quickly regained when they launched into the ballad "When You Look Me in the Eyes" after Nick assured the fans "Nothing matters to us more than your safety," following through with a joyous singalong on "Year 3000."

Our European fans, we love you and can’t wait to see you. It’s been long overdue and we are so excited to play these shows later this year in the fall. So make sure to hold on to your tickets. We will have more information to come, but we cannot wait to see you. Thank you for all your support over all these years” share the Jonas Brothers.
Produced by Live Nation, The Tour is their most ambitious outing to date with 98 shows across 26 countries. Every night is a celebration of five albums and features their best hits throughout the years including a variety of career-spanning deep cuts and fan-favorite hits.
Their monumentally successful North American run, which hit legendary venues including Toronto’s Rogers Centre, Chicago’s Wrigley Field, and Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium, concluded in 2023 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. In 2024, The Tour continues its trek around the globe, returning next to South America for the first time in ten years. The Latin American leg of The Tour will see the band perform in Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Chile, and Argentina, along with three performances across Mexico. They will also perform for the first time in Poland, Austria, Czech Republic, Northern Ireland, Hamburg, Lyon, Munich, and Norway later this fall.
