The Weeknd performing at Etihad Stadium.

The Weeknd review – spectacular voyage through post-apocalyptic pop

Etihad Stadium, Manchester With a fire-belching, robot-enhanced stage show and 33 songs dispatched in two hours, Abel Tesfaye turns his jaded libertine image inside out with good old-fashioned thrills

T he Weeknd’s 2023 stadium tour – postponed so many times that its title features not just the name of his most recent album, Dawn FM , but its 2020 predecessor, After Hours – is nothing if not spectacular.

The set is a vast metallic cityscape, filled with ruined landmarks – St Paul’s Cathedral, Toronto’s CN Tower and the Empire State Building among them – which belch out fire or shoot violet-coloured lasers above the crowd at strategic moments. But most of the action takes place on a runway that stretches nearly the full length of the Etihad Stadium’s pitch, which also belches out fire at strategic moments, and comes illuminated by dozens of spotlights that either point skywards or focus on the audience, illuminating huge sections of the stands, which are already illuminated by the crowd themselves, equipped with Coldplay-inspired flashing wristbands on arrival. The walkway is decorated with an immense moon dangling over its far end and an even more immense model of the Hajime Sorayama-designed robot featured in the video for 2011’s Echoes of Silence. The song doesn’t feature in the setlist, but no matter: the model slowly rotates, shoots coloured lights from its eyes, and provides a focal point around which dancers, clad in white robes and veils that look not unlike Tuareg tagelmusts, move in slow concentric circles.

We are the robots … The Weeknd.

All this is intended to represent “a journey through a cosmic cataclysm that has erupted and plagued the Earth”. Coupled with the speed at which the show’s tracks are dispatched – they are truncated and segue into each other, which enables the Weeknd to cram a staggering 33 songs into just under two hours – it’s a lot to take in, although apparently not enough to distract at least one fan’s attention from what’s happening in the Ataturk Stadium . He spends virtually the entire gig glued to coverage of the Champions League final on his mobile, blind to any cosmic cataclysm that doesn’t involve City failing to win the treble.

He obviously goes home happy, but it’s hard not to feel that he has missed out. The concept is pretty opaque – you wouldn’t have a clue what was supposed to be going on up there unless you’d read the advance publicity – but the relentlessness of its visual and aural bombardment is impressively beguiling.

On stage, Abel Tesfaye is a noticeably sweeter but less charismatic figure than you might expect. He spends the show’s first half performing with his face concealed by an MF Doom-style metallic mask, but proves surprisingly big on the kind of old-fashioned rabble-rousing that involves claiming that one half of the audience is his favourite, then changing his mind when the other half cheers louder and asking them if they’re ready to go home yet when the show is barely halfway through.

Mask or not, the air of darkly brooding mystery projected by his videos is punctured slightly by the sight of him enthusiastically playing air guitar, and at one point air keyboards, during solos. For a man who has spent the past 13 years inhabiting the persona of a creepily decadent but conflicted libertine, big on auto-erotic asphyxiation, punishing cocaine binges, abusive relationships and wilfully hollow materialism (The Morning’s chorus of “the money is the motive” is an impressively cynical line with which to provoke a heartfelt audience singalong), he cuts a surprisingly cuddly figure on stage.

But perhaps that’s a persona he is tiring of. Tesfaye has been making noises about this being his final tour, at least as the Weeknd. He has said stuff like that before, but if it is the end of an era, the show acts both as a perfect summation and an impressive way to bow out. The setlist is expansive enough to reach back to his earliest work – the Siouxsie and the Banshees-fuelled lurch of House of Balloons sounds fantastic – and even pay a passing visit to 2013’s Kiss Land , the relative flop that nearly derailed his career entirely. You’re struck by how varied his work has been: the woozy, weary balladry of Often is dramatically different to the neon-hued pop of Blinding Lights and Less Than Zero, the latter’s chorus sounding positively Abba-esque as it booms around the stadium.

But you’re also struck by how well it fits when crammed together cheek-by-jowl. The segues feel seamless, the shifts in temperature never jar – it’s all held together by a sharp melodic sense that means even the cloudiest tracks never feel as if they are they’re rambling. If this is a kind of retirement party for said persona, then it’s a euphorically celebratory one: even those punters whose enjoyment of the evening isn’t predicated on City’s performance in Turkey leave looking thrilled.

The Weeknd After Hours Til Dawn Tour 2022

What Songs Is The Weeknd Playing On The ‘After Hours Til Dawn’ Tour?

Derrick Rossignol

The pandemic made it so The Weeknd couldn’t tour behind 2020’s After Hours immediately following its release, but he didn’t want that to stop him from putting out another album. He ended up doing just that, dropping Dawn FM earlier this year. That didn’t put an After Hours tour to rest, though. Instead, The Weeknd is supporting both albums on his ongoing After Hours Til Dawn tour .

The trek kicked off in mid-July and so far, The Weeknd has six shows under his belt (as of August 4). At those concerts, what songs has he been performing most?

The answer right now is all of them, according to data from Setlist.fm , the most comprehensive resource for concert setlists available online; For each show, he’s had the exact same 29-song setlist, which makes sense given how early into the tour he is.

Setlist.fm also has an “average setlist” for the After Hours Til Dawn tour , which is based on setlists from previous shows, so it’s an indication of how an upcoming The Weeknd show might be structured. This one was probably pretty easy to figure out.

As for album-by-album representation on the setlist, Dawn FM has the most songs included, followed closely by After Hours . Then, it’s Starboy , Beauty Behind The Madness , House Of Balloons , My Dear Melancholy , and Kiss Land . If all the “covers” (songs The Weeknd performs on but isn’t the primary artist of on the album version) were considered an album, they’d go after Starboy in the rankings and before Beauty .

Find The Weeknd’s most played songs on After Hours Til Dawn tour below, as well as the tour’s average setlist. Check out The Weeknd’s upcoming tour dates here .

This was such a great show!! I would definitely see him live again.

-great light display/props/theatrics

-he sang music from all his albums which was well appreciated!

-he interacted with the crowd

-he sings AMAZING live

-chill atmosphere

-performers/musicians were smoking weed on stage

-Abel took a longgg time to get on stage, we were there for almost two hours before he did

-crowd was very drunk & rude (not his fault)

-merchandise was very expensive (I payed $40 for a t-shirt)

This review might not be completely objective as Abel has been my favourite singer for a few years now. However, I can definitely admit the Starboy tour date in Paris was the best pop concert I've been to this year. Even though some songs could have been put out of the tracklist, he mostly sang his catchiest songs of his career, no matter the era. He has great, or should I say, tremendous energy as he continuously sang twenty-something songs with no pause in between. He has no trouble reaching high notes live, his voice sounding even more heavenly in real life. That night, he invited Travis Scott on stage who pumped up the crowd more than him, which is a shame and showcases very well his lack of success and recognition in France, yet, in a sold out stadium. Most people actually didn't even know his real name or the lyrics of his songs ! I would recommend any "real fan" who has known him for a while or who likes his last album a lot to go to a Starboy tour date. I promise you, you won't regret it.

The concert was absolutely stunning. A starship was used and the lights were coordinated very well. Abel sang amazingly in person and I loved jumping up and down screaming with other members of the audience while he sang. The concert was truly magical and I enjoyed every second Abel stood on stage.

As for the other singers who appeared on stage, I was very satisfied with their singing as well. They did an amazing job and captured the entire audience. In between Abel's music, the other singers such as Lil Uzi and 6lack played their hits on stage and the whole crowd became even more alive. If I the concert played out any other way, I'm sure I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as this concert.

The Weeknd

The Weeknd’s postponed tour of Australia is now canceled and ticket owners will be refunded.

The Canadian R&B superstar had initially scheduled an 11-date stadium tour of Australia and New Zealand, winding its way across both countries last November and December.

Trending on billboard.

“The Weeknd ‘After Hours Til Dawn Tour’ for Australia & New Zealand is still in process of being rescheduled,” reads a statement from LN, seen by Billboard . “Whilst we continue to work through the rescheduling process with the artist, tickets for the existing 2023 tour will be cancelled with all ticket holders receiving a full refund accordingly.”

Ticket holders of the The Weeknd’s ‘After Hours Til Dawn Tour’ shows who previously held on to their tickets will be able to access a priority purchase window for the new tour in Australia and New Zealand when announced, the message reads, linking to a priority waitlist . All current ticket holders will receive an automatic refund.

The tour was originally announced last August with just four shows, visiting each of Australia’s big three east coast cities — Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane — and including a single date in Auckland, NZ.

Additional dates were added last September , boosting the itinerary to 11 across both markets.

The Weeknd’s tour is scrapped as Australia’s festivals market navigates turbulent waters. In recent weeks, the 2024 editions of Splendour in the Grass, Mona Foma, and Groovin The Moo, with soft ticket sales playing a part in each story.

The inaugural Soundcheck report, published by Creative Australia, found the climate for operating a festival was a “highly complex” one, with event organizers challenged with myriad issues, from rapidly increasing costs, changing ticket buying behavior and more.

In the U.S., he has landed seven No. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100 and four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200.

On Australia’s ARIA Albums Chart, published last Friday, April 19 , the Weeknd’s hits collection The Highlights lifts 8-4 in its 167th week on the tally. It’s triple-platinum certified in Australia.

The Weeknd has announced he’s bringing his global stadium tour to Australia later this year.

The Canadian singer, 33, will include stops in Australia and New Zealand in November and December as part of his After Hours Til Dawn tour, which first kicked off in North America last year.

The tour is in support of his fourth and fifth studio albums, After Hours (2020) and Dawn FM (2022).

The Weeknd – real name Abel Tesfaye – just wrapped the European leg of the tour, and will next head to Latin America from September before kicking off the Australian leg, which includes three shows.

He first stops in Brisbane, performing at Suncorp Stadium on November 20, before heading to Sydney’s Accor Stadium on November 24. His final show will be at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on December 1, before jetting to New Zealand for one show at Auckland’s Eden Park on December 7.

The Blinding Lights hit maker, who last performed in Australia in 2017, will be supported by special guests Mike Dean and Chxrry22.

Pre-sale tickets go on sale on Friday August 25 to Vodafone customers, which will open to Melbourne customers at 10am, Brisbane at 11am and Sydney at 12pm.

Foxtel Rewards members can purchase exclusive reserved tickets on September 1 at 10am, with general public tickets also going on sale the same day – in Melbourne at 10am, Brisbane at 11am and Sydney at 12pm.

Variety reports the After Hours Til Dawn tour has made over $US350 million in sales as of July, making it the highest grossing tour by a black artist, surpassing Michael Jackson’s HIStory World Tour in the late ‘90s.

Last month, the tour broke London Stadium’s attendance record with 160,000 concertgoers across two nights.

Breaking: The Weeknd has cancelled his Australian tour

After postponing due to “unforeseen circumstances”, the Starboy has officially scrapped all of his sold-out shows

Leah Glynn

Nooo! After months of confusion following the announcement in November last year that the Weeknd’s After Hours Til Dawn tour was postponed due to “unforeseen circumstances”, it has just been revealed that the entire run of sold-out Aussie gigs have been cancelled.

The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye) had been scheduled to play four epic shows at Marvel Stadium on December 1, 2, 4 and 5, 2023, with performances also confirmed in both Sydney and Brisbane. None of these will go ahead now, with Ticketek confirming that full refunds will be issued to all ticketholders

“Whilst we continue to work through the rescheduling process with the artist, tickets for the existing 2023 tour will be cancelled. All purchased tickets will receive a full refund,” reads a statement on the ticketing company’s website.

It’s expected that refunds will take approximately 30 days to appear in the accounts of ticketholders. And if the Weeknd does indeed decide to head Down Under again (c’mon, we gotta hold out hope), those people will be able to access a priority pre-sale purchase window for new tickets. If sitting in that stressful Ticketek waiting room is something you’d do all over again just to see the Starboy in real life, there’s a waitlist you can join here .

There’s been no word from the Weeknd himself regarding the Aussie cancellations, and he didn’t publicly comment on the initial postponement – so we’re not holding out hope for statement (or apology!).

All those tears you were saving for another day? Yep, it’s time to shed ‘em. We’ll keep you updated with new info as it comes in.

The Weeknd Cancels Highly Anticipated Australian and New Zealand Tour

F ans of The Weeknd received disappointing news as the highly anticipated Australian and New Zealand tour has been officially canceled. The decision comes after the tour was initially postponed indefinitely in 2023, leaving many wondering about the fate of the concerts.

Scheduled to begin in Brisbane, the tour’s abrupt halt disappointed fans who were eagerly awaiting the chance to see the multi-Grammy award winner and Super Bowl halftime legend perform live.

With shows planned in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Auckland, the ‘After Hours Til Dawn’ stadium tour promised an unforgettable experience for music enthusiasts across the region.

Despite the setback, fans remain hopeful for future opportunities to catch The Weeknd in action.

While no reason for the postponement and now cancellation has been given, logistical challenges and ongoing uncertainties stemming from the global pandemic are likely factors.

Ticketek said in a statement that ticket holders will be receiving full refunds. They also expressed their desire to “work through the rescheduling process with the artist.”

For fans who had eagerly awaited the chance to see The Weeknd live in concert, the disappointment is palpable.

The Australian and New Zealand leg of the tour promised unforgettable performances, amplifying the impact of the cancellation.

The only silver lining for those who retained their tickets since the 2023 postponement is the promise of special priority purchase eligibility for any future tour dates announced by The Weeknd.

Amid the music industry’s ongoing struggle with the global pandemic, cancellations and postponements have unfortunately become commonplace.

The Weeknd’s cancellation serves as a poignant reminder of the persistent uncertainty confronting artists and fans alike in these unprecedented times.

For now, fans are left to cherish memories of past performances and eagerly await the day when The Weeknd will once again light up stages across Australia and New Zealand. Until then, the anticipation and excitement for his eventual return remain unwavering.
