Ningbo China – Top-10 Most Popular Tourist Attractions

Ningbo is a pretty coastal city on China’s East coast, and it’s blessed with plenty things to see! The natural landscapes are breath-taking- you’ll see huge green mountains, and you can visit one of the many tropical islands just off the coast. It’s also endowed with rich cultural roots, and the relics and monuments to it’s 7000 year old history are not only plentiful but absolutely stunning in their beauty.

We’ve sourced some of top tourist attractions in the city, you’ve got to visit these must-see places!

1. Wulong Ponds

This one’s for the nature lovers. It’s only 35 miles outside the city, and it’s a big area so it makes for a good day-trip. Gaze at the tall green mountains, waterfalls, valleys and gin clear mountain streams.

It holds a special place in the hearts of Buddhists who believe in dragon worship. It’s not only natural attractions: divided into four different parts, including a cultural exhibition centre and a recreational area which is a great place to stop, have a snack and take in the tranquil surroundings. Go see the five deep ponds.

When? 07:30 am-16:30 pm. How much? 40 RMB

2. Xikou Town

Only a short drive outside the city, Xikou is famous because it’s the hometown of Jiang Jieshi who was a renowned ruler during the Kuomingtang era. It’s a small historical town that’s also home to Mount Xuedou, which is a must-see in the area.

You can choose to follow one of the sight-seeing paths that abound in the area. We suggest you choose one that will take you past the Xuedou Temple and the 600 foot tall Xuedou Waterfall.

If you had to choose only one thing to see in the town, make sure it’s the tomb of Jiang’s mother. It’s set in a memorial park on Xuedou Mountain, begin at the gate that’s surrounded by huge pillars to welcome you in. As you progress up the path, you’ll see various other picturesque tombs and pavilions, as well as a nunnery. At the end you’ll arrive at the tomb.

When? 8:30 am-4:30 pm. How much? 200 RMB for the entire scenic area.

3. China Port Museum

This is an integral part of the “Maritime Silk Road”, it provides an engaging experience educating visitors about the development of marine civilization, as well as the chronology, history and culture of ports. Apart from the regular tourists, it’s also a base for scientific research.

The museum is built in a slick modern design, with metal lines that encapsulate 21st century port characteristics.

The space is divided into six sections. Gain knowledge of modern ports at the Road To Innovation section, which highlights the basic functions, design and operations of ports. If you have kids in tow, we recommend the Digital Ocean Centre. It gives you an overwhelming sense of being under the ocean! With the clever use of audio and video, you’ll learn more about the oceans of our world.

When? Tuesday-Sunday 9am-5pm

4. Baoguo Temple

Wonderfully located on the stunning Lingshan mountain is Baoguo Temple. First constructed during the Han dynasty, it’s been reconstructed over the years and is now a top tourist attraction. Since it’s been redone over and over by different dynasties, it represents a piece of various eras.

As you enter, you’ll see two huge pillars flanked by Buddha sculptures. Inside, you’ll find various halls and showrooms housing bell and drum towers, statues and bronze wares. The main highlight is the main hall, which was built hundreds of years ago in the Song dynasty. It’s a remarkable exhibition of well-preserved wooden architecture- however, not a single nail was used in it’s construction! For many years scientists have debated as to why no birds attempt to nest in the eaves, and why the hall is completely bug free.

When? 9 am-4:30 pm. How much? 20 RMB.

5. Ningbo Ocean World

One for the kids, who by now may be tired of seeing all the cultural stuff. It’s design draws from Angkor Wat and ancient Egypt- it’s one of China’s top aquariums. The kids will love the squat, cuddly penguins and the playful seals. If they’re not too scared, you can also see some monstrous sharks up close and personal!

With three different sightseeing tunnels, you are bombarded with 180 degree view of ocean life in all it’s glory. There’s lots of places to grab a snack, as well as a toy market if you’d like to bring a memento home. They also have spectacular marine shows daily.

When? 8:15 am-5:15 pm How much? 100 RMB.

6. Tiantong Temple

You’ll love this if you’re into traditional Chinese architecture and it’s also a must-see temple in the province. The temple is nestled under the famous Taibai Mountain. It’s over 1700 years old, and makes up part of China’s ten scared temples for the Chan sect.

It has special significance for Buddhists and receives pilgrims all year round. With the tense relationship between Japan and China, it provides a perfect opportunity for inter-cultural relationships to grow.

Some of the temples highlights include the Imperial Library Tower, Bell Tower, and the hall of Arhats. Unique to other temples, it has three gates.

When? 8 am-6pm. How much? Free

7. Dongqian Lake

One of Ningbo’s best tourist attractions. Think crystal clear waters beneath China’s famous green mountains, with tons of cultural heritage to explore.

With over 1200 years history, it’s been turned into a reservoir by the hands of cheap labour over the dynasties.

See: Little Putuo. It’s the main attraction at the lake- a pretty little embankment where you can also find the Xiayu Temple. Also make sure you visit the museum to see stone cravings dating back to the Song dynasty, and King Yue’s Temple.

When? 8 am-5 pm.

8. Tianyi Ge

This is the oldest private library in China! It’s next to the beautiful Ming Lake, and houses over 300 000 books, 80 000 of which are considered incredibly rare. It was built in the sixteenth century by a book worm called Fan Qin. He collected books from friends and relatives, amassing 70 000 before his death.

The books offer a uniquely detailed insight into Ningbo’s history and culture.

How much? 15RMB for kids, 30 for adults.

9. Ashoka Temple

A little different from the hordes of other temples, because it’s an Indian Buddhist temple! It’s dedicated to a famous Indian Emperor (Ashoka) who was given the task of spreading Buddhism to China.

First built in 282 A.D, it’s absolutely massive at 14 000 square meters. You can walk your way through over 600 rooms. However, it’s best known for the pagoda that’s home to ancient relics of the historical Buddha. There’s also a dagoba (small house_ that’s home to the historical relics of the Sakyamuni.

When? 6 am- 4 pm How much? 10 RMB

10. Jiangbei Catholic Church

Situated in the southern corner of Tianyi square, this historic church was built in 1702 by a French missionary. It’s architecture is classic Goth style, and there’s a spacious hall with two drum towers that stand over 60 meters tall.

When? 8 am-9 pm daily.

Overall Ningbo has loads to offer for history buffs, nature lovers and the kids. Remember that tap water is not drinkable in China so always carry your own.

Traveling to Ningbo: The Port on the East China Sea

Traveling to Ningbo

Traveling to Ningbo – Index

How to get to ningbo, where to stay in ningbo, what to see and do in ningbo, typical dishes.

Located in Zhejiang Province, southeast of the famous city of Nanjing , an ancient imperial city where even today you can admire its beauty and historic past, as well as the main city of Jiangsu Province (more specifically the eastern coast), Ningbo is one of the oldest cities in China and owns its fame mostly due to its port, which is among the most important and well-known.

In fact, after the First Opium War (1839-42), with a stipulation in the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842, it was listed among the five ports open to international commercial traffic. We also know that Ningbo has a history going back more than 2,000 years thanks to its frequent commercial exchanges along the Silk Road, which especially intensified during the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) Dynasties.

According to recent statistics, the city of Ningbo stands out as 16th place on the national classification of the best economic cities list of 2018, and at the same time, it’s considered one of the 30 cities that have the highest rate of innovation and creativity.

There are various options to get to Ningbo (depending on where you’re leaving from). If you’re leaving from Nanjing, just take a gaotie 高铁 ( high speed train ) or a dongche 动车 (the predecessor of the gaotie ) and in 2h30-3h you’ll arrive at your destination for a price that goes from 149 (if traveling with the dongche ) to 188.50 Yuan (if you prefer to travel by gaotie ).

If instead you’re in the nearby city of Shaoxing , known as the birthplace of the most famous Chinese writer of the twentieth century, Lu Xun 鲁迅 (1881-1936), as well as one of the most important and influential Chinese politicians, Zhou Enlai 周恩来 (1898-1976), your trip, will be noticeably less since it takes between 32and 50 minutes (this too depends on the type of train you take).

It’s also cheap and affordable for everyone, costing between 39 Yuan for the dongche to 51.50 for the gaotie .

Don’t worry, finding a hotel or hostel in China is child’s play. Just look around to see how many of these there are, from family run establishments to those a little chicer.

In any case, depending on the type of hotel/hostel you decided to stay in, you’ll be well received, because it’s known that the waiguoren 外国人 or laowai 老外 (as they love to call us) always have a certain fascination that definitely doesn’t go unnoticed.

For one or two nights I recommend the 99 Inn (Ningbo Railway Station South Bus Station), 99 旅馆 (宁波火车站汽车南站店) in No. 121-125 Hengchun Street, 恒春街121/125号, near the train and bus station (exactly 1 km) and just 380 m from the closest metro station, Yunxia Lu 云霞路 on line 2.

Nearby you’ll find a little of everything: fruit sellers (who are impossible to avoid in China), supermarkets, pharmacies, typical restaurants where you can taste local delicacies, and much more. The average price for a single room with a double bed and private bath goes from 60 to 70 yuan a night, breakfast not included.

To book both transportation and a reservation at a hotel/hostel, you can use one of the many convenient and useful apps or Chinese websites. My first suggestion would be on the very popular Ctrip or Xiecheng 携程, which are starting to become well known in Europe and also have mobile versions.

Valid alternatives are Tongcheng Yilong 同程艺龙 accessible from the WeChat Pay section, specifically services offered by third parties, and also Feizhu Luxing 飞猪旅行, an app that has gained ground in recent years.

Even though it’s not a popular destination to spend a vacation for many, in my opinion, Ningbo is a city that is absolutely worth visiting.

If you don’t have a lot of time available, no problem; I’ll propose an easy itinerary that will allow you to visit the best places (of a historic or natural nature) in Ningbo in one or two days.

The Tianyige Bowuguan 天一阁博物馆 (Tianyige Library)

With more than 400 years of history, the Tianyige Library has the largest and rarest collection of books in all of China – possibly even Asia – and is among the best in the world for the quality and accurate conservation methods used for books and manuscripts, which are still kept in great shape after some 13 generations.

Who would have said so? Incredible. It’s said that the sophisticated system of conservation essentially consists of keeping the books in a ventilated area and using stones and special herbs to absorb the humidity and keep away moths.

After arriving at the central train station, Ningbozhan 宁波站 (Ningbo Railway Station), getting to the library is quite easy: you can go by foot (it’s 1.2 km) and you’ll get there in 15 minutes.

Or for the more “lazy” you can take the city bus numbers 26 or 371 from the north square of the station and get off after one stop at Tianyige – Yuehu jingqu 天一阁-月湖景区, and from there go on foot for just 150 m.

Please note: the ticket costs 30 Yuan, but if you have the xueshengzheng 学生证 (student card) you can take advantage of a 50% discount. In the winter it closes at 17:00, while during the summer it closes at 17:30. Don’t miss the chance to let yourself be intoxicated by so much culture and wisdom in one place, especially for fans of reading and Asian literature which could send you into ecstasy.

The Laowaitan 老外滩 (the foreigners Bund)

If you’re tired of always eating Chinese food and want to take a break, this is definitely the right place for you.

With cobblestone streets, bars, and restaurants in the style of the Temple Bar in Dublin, chic London areas or the Bund in nearby Shanghai (sticking with the Chinese theme), the laowaitan is perfect for those who love the nightlife and want to relax and listen to good music with a river view, since it falls right at the intersection of the following three: the Yongjiang 甬江, Yuyao 余姚 and Fenghua 奉化.

To reach the aforementioned neighborhood, you can comfortably take line 2 of the metro, getting off at the Waitan daqiao 外滩大桥 stop and taking exit B.

Xikou fengjingqu 溪口风景区 (Xikou National Scenic Spot)

Drum roll, please! This is the city of Ningbo’s strong point. It’s a tourist attraction that was given the highest rating of 5 (AAAAA), which corresponds to our stars, and is located about 40 km from the center of Ningbo, so it’s a little bit in the outskirts, right in the district of Fenghua 奉化.

The quickest and most convenient option to get there is to get on city bus number 988, which departs from the south square of the central bus station. A ticket costs 5 Yuan (one way) and you’ll have to wait a good 13 stops.

The trip will keep you pinned to your seat on the Chinese bus – as we all know – for about 50-60 minutes until you have to get off at the end of the line at Xuedoushan youren zhongxin 雪窦山游人中心 and from there go on foot for just 200 m.

Entrance tickets are priced a little high, but it is absolutely worth it and you won’t regret it; furthermore, if you’re a student you’ll pay half price, and the total will be 75 Yuan (the equivalent of 10 Euro) which includes both round trip transport on the shuttle and entrance to all the attractions in what I would define as an “immense amusement park”.

I recommend that you get up early in the morning so as to get there when it opens (8:00-17:00 during the summer season) so as to avoid the confusion at the ticket counter and fully enjoy the fascinating and entrancing scenic area that is worth dedicating a whole day to see.

In my opinion, the ace up the sleeve of this mystical place is the gigantic Mile Dafo 弥勒大佛 (Buddha Maitreya) whose imposing figure will without a doubt make your jaw drop. 56.74 m high and made up of more than 500 tons of bronze, it is the world’s largest example of an open-air Buddha Maitreya (seated position).

To go see it, you’ll have to take the shuttle (included in the ticket) – as soon as you cross the usual security controls – which will drop you off a few hundred meters away to be covered on foot. The Buddha is located atop the Xuedousi 雪窦寺 (Xuedou Temple) which is named after the mountain it’s located on, Xuedoushan 雪窦山, which is itself inside an enormous scenic area.

In addition I suggest that you pay your respects (you’ll have to pay a supplement of 20 Yuan) and touch – as is usually done – the feet as a sign of good luck by the Chinese bao fojiao 抱佛脚.

After having rested a bit to regain your energy, you can continue your jitney outdoors on another side of the mountain where you can admire a breathtaking panorama to say the least: the Qianzhangyan pubu 千丈岩瀑布 (Qianzhangyan Falls) and Tingxiahu 亭下湖 (Tingxia Lake).

Have you ever heard of San Yintan 三隐潭 (Yintan Ponds)? Don’t worry, I’m here to provide you with some useful information about it. It’s basically three levels of waterfalls (upper, middle and lower) on a path – which can only be traveled on foot – which winds down from the peak area to the foot of the last waterfalls for more than 1600 m and will keep you occupied for more than an hour.

At certain places there’s the risk of falling and the walls are very steep, almost like a cliff; so it’s good to be careful, stay on the trail and lastly, good athletic abilities are recommended!

Legend has it that three dragons live there, and after having been loaned the water of the Milky Way and having killed a nine-headed bird, they were punished by the jade emperor and confined to each waterfall respectively: the blue dragon in the upper falls, the yellow dragon in the middle and the purple dragon in the last one.

For those who would like to taste typical dishes, my suggestion is to try the restaurants in the Nantang Laojie 南塘老街 where you can try a little bit of everything. To get there, the quickest options are to go on foot or by bicycle (Mobike, Ofo, Hello Bike) – leaving from the central bus and train station – and takes about 15-20 minutes.

Personally, the first dish I would suggest is the hei doufu 黑豆腐 (black tofu): these are little cubes of tofu covered in what looked to me to be black seaweed, then fried in a frying pan of boiling oil for a few seconds. It has a crunchy consistency but the taste though is not as good as mapo dofu 麻婆豆腐.

For fans of sweets – unfortunately, there’s nothing like a good tiramisù – I recommend that you try the Ningbo tangyuan 宁波汤圆 (there’s a small difference compared to traditional Chinese ones), which are little balls of nuomi 糯米 (sticky rice) which are first boiled, then stuffed with a sweet filling of black sesame and lastly, served in bowls of hot cooking water similar to a soup.

Just as tasty are the liang nong da gao 梁弄大糕, little cakes of rice flour stuffed with red beans and ma ci 麻糍 made with the usual nuomi , white sugar, egg and a type of Chinese herb (wormwood) that gives them a traditionally green color.

Ningbo Holidays: A travel guide for first-time visitors

Welcome to Ningbo! Tour one of China’s most prosperous industrial and economic regions. Far from being a grey and dreary city, Ningbo brims with historic, cultural and literary importance—an Asian metropolis filled with towering skyscrapers and ultra-modern malls surrounded by lush nature.

Welcome to Ningbo, one of China’s most prosperous industrial and economic regions. Far from being a grey and dreary city, Ningbo brims with historic, cultural and literary importance—an Asian metropolis filled with towering skyscrapers and ultra-modern malls surrounded by lush nature.

Travelling to Ningbo for the first time? Acquaint yourself with the city here. Prepared by the team at Pan Pacific Ningbo , our Ningbo 101 travel guide introduces you to the top tourist attractions and mouth-watering delicacies in Ningbo.

1. Useful Ningbo Travel Information

Time zone: GMT +8 time zone

Where To Stay in Ningbo: Wondering where you should stay in Ningbo? Consider Pan Pacific Ningbo . Comfortably appointed for both business and leisure travellers, we are located in the heart of Ningbo city, close to attractions such as the Old Bund, Tianyi Pavilion, and Dong Qian Lake—click here to learn about the selection of rooms and suites available for your stay.

Weather in Ningbo: Ningbo has a subtropical monsoon climate, recording the highest rainfall in the months of June and September. Humidity is high, and typhoons may be frequent in September.

Hottest months: July and August with temperatures reaching up to 28 degree Celsius.

Coldest months: January with temperatures dipping to four degree Celsius.

Electricity Sockets in Ningbo: 220 volts, using the three-pin and two-pin plugs of these shapes:

china electric plugs

Emergency: Dial 110 for the police (警察 jing cha), and 119 for the fire department (消防队 xiao fang dui). However, do note that it would be difficult to get an English-speaking responder on the line, so seek help from hotel staff if you do not speak Mandarin. Alternatively, ask a passer-by to call the police for you by saying 请帮我报警 (qing bang wo bao jing).

Getting around in Ningbo: There are currently two subway lines in Ningbo, with plans for another six lines by 2025 to 2030. There are over 570 bus routes , and most of the bus lines charge around 2 RMB for a journey, with buses coming in intervals of four to 20 minutes.

Taxis are another convenient option, and drivers charge 11 RMB for the first 3 kilometres and 2.4 RMB for each subsequent kilometre.

Drinking Water: Tap water in most Chinese cities are not safe for drinking, so stick to bottled water, which is easily available from 2 RMB.

Tipping: Not necessary, unless you are travelling in a tour group, staying in a luxury hotel, or dining in a Western restaurant. You can tip 5 - 30 RMB to a bellboy or a waiter, and 10 - 70 RMB a day to your tour guide and bus driver each. Some high-end Chinese restaurants may also include a 5% - 15% service charge in the bill.

2. Explore Laowaitan (The Old Bund)—the historic centre of Ningbo

Address: Renmin Road, Jiangbei District, Ningbo 315020, China

sacred heart cathedral ningbo

Thanks to the iconic 1980s television series The Bund (上海滩), you probably heard of the Bund in Shanghai, a waterfront area famed for its dazzling postcard views of skyscrapers and colonial buildings. Now, visit its lesser-known—but older—cousin, the Old Bund in Ningbo.

A thriving treaty port over 170 years ago, Ningbo’s Old Bund used to witness seafaring British and Dutch merchants loading and unloading precious cargo. These early trading activities played vital roles in modernising and transforming Ningbo’s economy.

Today, tourists throng the fashionable district for the Ningbo Museum of Art and to marvel at its classical European architecture—the most photographed of which is the Sacred Heart Cathedral. A protected historical and cultural site built in 1872 by the French, it was partially destroyed in a fire in 2014, and was only fully recently restored.

Looking for a place to hang out after dark in Ningbo? Laowaitan is the place to be. Come nightfall, the neighbourhood transforms into a happening nightlife hotspot, drawing merrymakers with its many restaurants and drinking holes.

3. Shop and mingle with Ningbo locals at Chenghuang Temple Market

Chenghuang Temple Market

Address: No. 22 Xianxue Street, Haishu District, Ningbo 315010, China

Opening hours: 8.00am to 6.00pm daily

chinese lucky knot

Centuries ago, pious devotees prostrated before statues of deities at the Chenghuang Temple, offering joss sticks and prayers in return for bountiful blessings.

Locals still gather here these days, albeit for the delicious snacks and bargain buys, making Chenghuang Temple Market a wonderful place to people-watch, mingle, and shop. The four-storey market is lined with little stores proffering cheap clothes—like most China markets, you are welcomed to indulge in polite haggling here.

First built in 1371, the temple was destroyed by fires and rebuilt over the years. Its current buildings still date back to 1884. History buffs can delight in the antiquated architecture of the old gates, uncover an ancient theatre platform, and pore over 30 tablets of inscriptions and ancient wells from the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279).

4. Dine like a Ningbonese at Hai Tien Lo

Hai Tien Lo dishes

Hai Tien Lo

Address: Pan Pacific Ningbo, Level 2, Ocean Tower

Telephone number: +86 574 8911 8888

Opening hours: 11.30am to 2.00pm, and 5.00pm to 10.00pm daily

Fact: the Chinese people are fixated with food. Another fact: "Anything that walks, swims, crawls, or flies with its back to heaven is edible,” at least according to chef/author Eileen Yin-Fei Lo in her cookbook The Chinese Kitchen.

So if you have an adventurous palate, sample Ningbo’s number one dish Bingtang Jiayu (Steamed Turtle Soup)—an exotic fare said to be highly fortifying which infuses either sweet or salty tastes with a strong fragrance.

For everyone else, you can savour the best of Ningbo’s signature dishes at Hai Tien Lo located within Pan Pacific Ningbo itself. Since Ningbo is a coastal city, it has an abundance of seafood, so do try our Ningbo-style Marinated White Crab, Deep-fried Yellow Croaker Wrapped with Tofu Skin, and Stewed Seafood with Gourd in Soup. End your meal with the Glutinous Rice Dumplings filled with Sesame Paste—another of the city’s top offerings.
