Tour de France

Cheng ji’s bringing up the rear, but he’s front and center as first chinese to start the tour, cheng ji started his athletic career as a runner, moved into cycling, and since has become the first chinese to start all three grand tours.

GÉRARDMER, France (VN) — Cheng Ji (Giant-Shimano) may sit second from last in the general classification, but he has already made history by becoming the first rider from China to compete in the Tour de France.

“Like I say, it doesn’t matter in sport where you’re from, what matters is what you want to be and what you believe,” Ji said. “It’s very simple, just try and change your way.”

Ji comes from Harbin, which counts 6.7 million inhabitants and sits in the country’s far northeast, near Russia. Known as Ice City, Harbin grows so cold in the winter that locals cut ice from the river and build small villages, stringing lights throughout and creating a magical environment.

Ji kept warm as a 500- and 800-meter runner until he discovered cycling. He rode first on the track and then moved outdoors during the warmer months.

“I jumped on a bike, but I wasn’t really good. I was too skinny, about 53 or 54kg [117lb], without any muscle,” said Ji. “In the beginning, it was really hard.”

He progressed and made the bridge from China to Europe. He joined Giant-Shimano in 2007, then called Skil-Shimano, remaining with the mostly Asian and Dutch squad as it grew to become a first-division team.

In 2012, he became the first Chinese cyclist to race the Vuelta a España and helped John Degenkolb win five stages. He was so strong in that Vuelta, they started to call him the “Breakaway Killer.”

“The first time I heard the name, it was funny,” Ji said. “I did my job well in the Vuelta and the journalists invented this name. I said, ‘It’s funny, I like it.'”

Last year, Ji became China’s first participant in the 2013 Giro d’Italia. He only stuck around to stage 5, but that was enough to lend Degenkolb a hand for the Matera stage win.

Now, he has gone three for three in the grand tours with a start in the Tour de France.

“He can still become stronger, become more focused,” said sports director Marc Reef. “Like on the first day of the Tour, he eased off one minute at the top of a climb and lost his place. You can’t do that in the Tour.”

Still Ji has helped Marcel Kittel win three stages this year. And he has already had an effect on the race and his country.

“It’s big for Giant, big for Shimano, big for the Tour, and big for everyone else,” said Reef. “His Vuelta and Giro ride made an incredible impact on China. You can just imagine what the Tour is doing. He’s getting a lot of attention while growing into the ambassador role.”

This year, seven Chinese journalists are covering the Tour de France. At home, fans can watch live coverage for two hours every day for the first time. When they’re not watching, they are logging on to Ji’s Weibo account , China’s equivalent to Twitter, and leaving around 300 messages of support daily.

“Cycling’s become more popular in China now. When I go back for holiday, I see more people on their bikes, but that’s not just because of me, it’s just the gradual interest in sport and their desire to have fun in their free time,” Ji said.

“We’ve won three times so far in the Tour. I’m going to help the team win more, that’s my big goal. My personal aim is just to finish the race.”

Tour de France heads to China with Criterium in Shanghai

Tour de France heads to China with Criterium in Shanghai

The Tour de France – or to be specific, a Criterium organised by race owners ASO – is heading to China.

On the last weekend of October, the Tour de France China Criterium will take place in Shanghai, and follows a similar event held in Saitama, Japan for the past four years.

Some of the biggest stars from this summer’s French Grand Tour will join local Chinese riders for the race on a three-kilometre circuit based around the site of the 2010 Universal Expo and the China Art Museum.

Only one Chinese rider has completed the Tour de France – Ji Cheng, who rode the 2014 edition of the race with Giant-Shimano and finshed as lanterne rouge in last place.

He retired at the end of last season at the age of 29 after a decade with the team.

Ahead of the Tour de France China Critérium, the city of Changsa – the birthplace of Chairman Mao – will host the Etape China by le Tour de France, with several thousand cyclists expected to take part.

The weekend of the Criterium itself – 28 and 29 October – Shanghai will also see a 22-kilometre family ride starting at the city’s 468-metre tall Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower.

France and Shanghai have a longstanding connection, with the European country administering the area of the city known as the French Concession from 1849 to 1943, and which remains a popular tourist destination today thanks to its distinctive fee

Jean-Etienne Amaury, president of ASO, which launched the event in partnership with Activation Sport, said: “We want to share the passion all over the world. The Tour de France is reinventing itself and thriving in the context of the global development of cycling.

“We believe that Activation Sport, with its strong desire to develop a healthy and sustainable sport-oriented lifestyle, will be the ideal gateway for us to reach the millions of bicycle lovers in China.”

The Tour de France Criterium in Saitama, Japan, has attracted upwards of 200,000 spectators since it was launched in 2013, with last year’s edition featuring Tour de France winner Chris Froome and world champion Peter Sagan.

There’s very much an end-of-term feel about the event, with pre-race publicity last year seeing the pair and other riders dressing in imperial kimonos as well as making and eating Mochi, a traditional Japanese cake.

Tour de France stage 21 -

Chris Froome sealed a third career Tour de France victory and a fourth for Team Sky as the Briton safely negotiated the final stage into Paris. The Briton enjoyed a relaxed start to the 21st stage, sharing beers then champagne with his teammates before the peloton arrived on the Champs-Élysées and the sprint teams took over.

For the second year running, it was Andre Greipel taking the stage win as the German fastman made it stages for Lotto-Soudal. Mechanicals saw Marcel Kittel and Bryan Coquard miss the sprint with world champion Peter Sagan and Alexander Kristoff challenging Greipel for the win but ultimately coming up short.

Tour de France 2016 route

The 2016 Tour de France will be the 103rd edition of the oldest Grand Tour on the calendar. After a start in Utrecht in 2015, the race will return to home shores for the opening stages, setting off from the foot of Mont-Saint-Michel in the Manche department. The race last visited the picturesque area for the individual time trial in 2013, which was won by Tony Martin.

The full race route was announced on October 20 in Paris , with organiser ASO revealing an innovative but mountainous route that visits the Pyrenees, Mont Ventoux and the Alps. The race will not remain entirely in France, with three days to be spent in the Principality of Andorra  and a visit to Berne in Switzerland - the home town of Fabian Cancellara. Chris Froome (Team Sky) is the defending Tour de France champion. Froome won the race in 2013 but crashed out in 2014.

In 2016 Tour de France there will be just 54km of time trials, divided between a twisting 37km between Bourg-Saint-Andéol and La Caverne du Pont-d’Arc on stage 13 and then a hilly, almost mountain time trial on stage 18 between Sallanches and Megève in the Alps. The race will, of course, finish with the traditional stage through the streets of Paris.

The 2016 Tour de France starts on Saturday July 2 an ends on Sunday July 24. There will be two rest days in Andorra and Berne.

Tour de France 2016 contenders

A number of big names have already signalled their intention to ride the race in 2016. Defending champion Chris Froome ( Team Sky ) will return to try and take his third Tour de France title. Alberto Contador ( Tinkoff ) is hoping to end his illustrious career on a high with victory , while Nairo Quintana ( Movistar ) and Fabio Aru ( Astana ) are targeting their first wins in the race.

The French Tour de France challenge will come from Romain Bardet (AG2R) and Thibault Pinot (FDJ). Both riders won stages in 2015, while Pinot won the white jersey and finished third overall in the 2014 Tour de France.

Other riders hoping to contend in the overall battle at the 2016 Tour de France include Richie Porte (BMC Racing), Tejay van Garderen (BMC Racing), Bauke Mollema (Trek Factory Racing) and Robert Gesink (Team LottoNL-Jumbo).

Tour de France 2015 overview

In 2015 Chris Froome won his second Tour de France after triumphing in 2013. In 2015 he was dominant almost throughout the race while Nairo Quintana (Movistar) was his closest challenger, finishing second overall at 1:12. The Colombian’s teammate Alejandro Valverde finished third overall while the 2014 Tour de France champion, Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) could only manage fourth overall. Alberto Contador (Tinkoff Saxo) finished fifth after winning the Giro d’Italia in May.

Froome moved into the yellow jersey on stage 10 when he won at La Pierre-Saint-Martin and never looked back. Despite a late rally from Quintana and illness in the third week, Froome hung on for victory.

Tour de France Goes to China: The Shanghai Critérium

Tour de France Goes to China: The Shanghai Critérium

One would think that all the fame the Tour de France gathered on the European continent might satisfy the behemoth of cycling races but last year saw it moving its activities to Asia.

The Critérium is an official Tour de France offshoot event and, for now, exists in two versions only – The Saitama Critérium in Japan and the Chinese Shanghai Critérium. With the first one already behind us, we’re going to talk about the latter which is about to happen this Saturday, on 17 November.

tour de france china

The official full name of the race is Le Tour de France Škoda China Critérium and was made possible by the A. S. O. – Amaury Sports Organisation – which is a world-famous company that owns, designs, and runs top international sporting events, specializing in the ‘non-stadia’ kind. As the name of the race suggests, Škoda is often the most notable sponsor of the A. S. O. cycling activities. With only the second year coming up, The Shanghai Critérium is a real newcomer on the scene. But the contender teams and their riders are certainly far from the greenhorn status. See for yourself:

We have Team Sky with yellow jersey holder Geraint Thomas who is having his most successful season to date. Next is AG2R La Mondiale with Romain Bardet and white jersey holder Pierre Latour and Katusha-Alpecin with Marcel Kittel. Where there’s Team Sky, there’s, of course, Bora-Hansgrohe with the notorious character Peter Sagan, dressed in green again. Bahrain-Merida couldn’t stay behind and will be bringing Antonio Nibali. Then we have Astana in full combat gear and Mitchelton-Scott team with the European champion Matteo Trentin. Accompanying those will be five more Chinese teams.

The nature of the track isn’t very similar to that of Le Tour. The potential rider can choose between two options – the Critérium Amateur ride of 21.8 km or the Critérium Pro, which is divided into twenty 3km-long laps. Both versions take place on the same urban track and don’t leave Shanghai’s downtown. As there are no slopes, hilly ascents, or other obstacles and the mainly flat course goes on in 20 laps, the Pro race resembles time-trial type events most of all. To make the laps as interesting as possible, the organisers planned the track along some of the most stunning sights of the city – one being the Oriental Pearl Tower and the other the China Art Museum. The Pro racers will see those twenty times in a row, after all, so let’s make it count.

According to estimates, the event expects to amass some 2,000 participants and about 50,000 on-site spectators. The riders will also receive some VIP treatment in the days leading to the race and afterwards, including introduction to Chinese traditional customs, culture, and food. We can’t help but think that for the riders of the likes of Sagan or Thomas, it must feel like a slightly demanding holiday before the winter break of the 2018 season but there’s still room for surprises! See you all in Shanghai this Saturday.

Last Over All in the Tour, but Blazing a Trail

tour de france china

By Ian Austen

  • July 21, 2014

ST. LAURENT DE LA CABRERISSE, France — It was predictable that Marcel Kittel, the amiable sprinter who has won three stages in this year’s Tour de France, attracted a large crowd of reporters on the race’s rest day Monday.

But while Ji Cheng, the man on the Giant Shimano team who chases down breakaways so that Kittel can do his work, was less of an attraction, he does hold two distinctions. He is the Lanterne Rouge, the rider in the last position over all, 4 hours 13 minutes behind the leader, Vincenzo Nibali. And he is the first Chinese rider ever in the race.

While China is a nation where bicycles, despite a growing influx of cars and scooters, remain an important form of transportation, racing on them is far less common.

Ji started out as a runner. But a dislike of the cold in his northern hometown, Harbin, set him off on a path that led him to the Tour.

Rather than cross-country ski, the preferred method of off-season training for runners in Harbin, Ji sought the warmth of an indoor velodrome.

“The track is not fun,” Ji said Monday. “The track is always lap after lap and the trainer is looking at his stopwatch and saying, ‘O.K. you were one second slower.’ ”

In road racing, by comparison, “you can train outside and you can see the people, you can see the view,” said Ji, 27. “It’s amazing for me.”

Ji probably would not be racing in Europe if the Chinese subsidiary of Shimano, the large bicycle parts maker, had not set up a small program to get Chinese riders there in 2006.

Ji’s knowledge of European road racing at that point was not extensive and based entirely on watching television.

“When you watch on the TV, you say: ‘Ah that’s nice, ah that’s cool, ah you saw that climb, ah you saw that attack, cool.’ But you really enjoy the race,” he said. “When you know what’s going on, it’s totally different.”

In China, Ji raced on relatively small circuits made up of closed four-lane highways. Despite the comparative lack of danger, coaches instructed Ji to brake before the corners and take them slowly, a route to failure in European racing. At the time, there were only two road races a year in China. In Europe, Ji now rides in about 45 a year.

Although Ji cannot recall the name of the first race he rode in Europe, a one-day event in France in 2007, he certainly remembers the experience.

“It was many narrow roads, everybody was just nervous and people were fighting for position,” Ji recalled. “For me it was just unbelievable. Why are people fighting like that?”

Punched several times during the race by rivals trying to move ahead, Ji did not finish.

Ji and the other two Chinese riders were sent to northern Holland and entered in that country’s numerous amateur criteriums. Held on short, tight circuits, each is a small war. Ji soon learned how to follow the pack through corners at speed without braking and, just as important, how to move up through the group. The inexperienced Chinese riders were always lined up at the back.

“Of course we had a lot of crashes, we had a lot of bad experiences,” Ji said. “But we learned how to fight.”

He gradually moved up to higher levels of racing. In 2012, he raced in the Vuelta a España, and last year brought him to the Giro d’Italia. Both were Chinese cycling firsts.

He remains the only one of a handful of Chinese riders Shimano sent to Europe who is still racing. But it has come at a cost. When the European season winds down and he returns home, Ji said that he is expected to then start racing for the Chinese national team.

“In China, it’s not like Europeans who say, ‘No, I’m tired, I don’t want to do that.’ ”

His now successful bid to make it to the Tour de France meant that Ji went four years without seeing his father, and he has not seen his wife, whom he married last year, for eight months.

Ji said that his ride at the Tour was receiving considerable attention in China, where the race is broadcast daily.

Ji was not impressed by the cobblestones in one decisive stage of this year’s Tour. “When there’s such nice roads, why are you racing there?” he asked. And he finds noise from the large crowds sometimes headache-inducing.

He is, however, neither embarrassed nor bothered about being in last place. It is, Ji said, part of a plan. Mountain stages, days when his team leader, Kittel, will not be anywhere near the front to fight for the finish, he takes it easy to preserve energy for the flat days when he leads the Tour’s entire pack of riders. His only job on climbs is to make sure that everyone on his team avoids missing the time limit.

“I’ve really taken them easy,” he said of the Alpine stages. “Maybe I lost 20 minutes: That’s O.K., because I really need to relax to prepare for what’s coming.”

He added: “My parents, my friends understand why I’m in last position. When somebody don’t understand, that’s fine.”

China’s first Tour de France cyclist chases his dream

The Tour de France standings can be misleading. After four days of racing, Ji Cheng is 192nd out of 194 remaining riders. Yet already the race represents a double triumph for the 26-year-old cyclist.

Issued on: 09/07/2014 - 08:26

When the Tour rolled out from Leeds on Saturday, Ji made history as the first cyclist from China to compete in the Grande Boucle. Ji represents China, but he is employed by the Dutch team Giant-Shimano.

The team’s star is sprinter Marcel Kittel. Ji’s job is to help Kittel win. So far, Ji and the rest of the Shimano team, have done just that. Led out by a phalanx of teammates, Kittel won the first stage in Harrogate, the third stage in London and the fourth stage on Tuesday in Lille.

Ji is accomplishing his twin goals for the Tour.

"My mission is to work as hard and as best as possible for the team and to finish on the Champs Elysées at the end," he told FRANCE 24 before the start.

Ji is from Harbin in northern China. The city is home to a famous ice festival and the temperatures in December, January and February are well below freezing.

"In 2002 I changed sport from running to cycling," he said. Ji took up track cycling, which meant he could train indoors in a velodrome all winter.

"The system is very different to Europe and other countries where cycling is popular," he said. "When I started cycling there were only two road races on during the season."

In 2007, he signed with the Giant-Shimano team, then known as Skil-Shimano.

"Shimano China wanted to support some Chinese racers. They wanted someone to go to a European professional team to race, to finally have a Chinese rider start the Tour de France," Ji told AFP. "I'm lucky they called me and said: 'there's a chance, you're young and good for road biking'."

The transition was not easy.

‘Really sad’

"The first year I was really sad, it was completely different," he said. "When you come to Europe, it's the small, funny things. When you come home from a race on Sunday and on Monday everything is closed in the city."

"It's a hard life, I have a family but they stay in China, my wife also," he said. "I'd really like my wife to come to Europe."

Ji’s participation in the Tour is a mark of the faith his team has in him.

"When we started working with him as a young talented rider back in 2008 we made a long-term plan and this has seen him develop into the highest level of the sport and we see him now playing an important factor in the sprint formations," Rudi Kemna, the Giant-Shimano coach, told the web site of the sport’s governing body, the UCI, or Union Cycliste Internationale.

Ji has already ridden in the two other major tours: the 2012 Vuelta a Espana and the Giro d'Italia last year for Giant-Shimano.

"For me, personally, finally I did the three Grand Tours, I can say I'm the first Chinese. I'm really happy for that and also for my dream since I started cycling, so finally I got there," he said.

Yet the Tour has a special status.

"When I started cycling in China, the Tour de France was the only race they showed on the TV," Ji said, adding that his participation was "an opportunity to show Chinese cycling to the world."

‘Globalization of the sport’

For professional cycling, Ji’s participation also offers a chance to show off the sport to the most populous country in the world.

"Having Cheng in the team as the first Chinese rider ever to ride the Tour de France will be huge for him and his country and we look forward to seeing the impact this has on the globalisation of the sport," Kemna said.

Ji might also have an impact on cycling in China on both a professional and a daily level. He said he hopes to inspire more Chinese racers.

"I hope for the future we will send more and more riders to European pro races," Ji said. "I hope they can use my experience to see that European cycling is possible."

His ride is also symbolic for a country that was once known as the "Kingdom of Bicycles," because so many people cycled everywhere.

With increasing wealth, more and more people have switched to cars and mopeds and more and more live in distant suburbs. That has contributed to a growing problem with air pollution. Now there is a move to get people back on their bikes.

Last year, more than 150 Chinese cities, including Harbin, took part in "National Car-Free Day”.

For now, as the Tour heads to France, Ji is focused on helping his team and reaching the finish.

"For me riding the Tour de France is a dream come true,” he said.

Tour de France 2023 preview: Full schedule and how to watch live

Another thrilling battle at the 2023 Tour de France is in sight as Tadej Pogacer will try to take back the Tour de France crown that he lost to Jonas Vingegaard last year. Here is all you need to about this year’s race which begins on 1 July in Bilbao, Spain.

Jonas Vingegaard on the podium in Paris at the Tour de France 2022

The Tour de France 2023 has all the makings of another road cycling thriller.

Will the world’s most prestigious race be the third act in the epic battle between defending champion Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark and 2021 champion Tadej Pogacar ?

Soon we will have all the answers with the 110 th edition of the French Grand Tour starting on Saturday (1 July) in Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque Country, Spain.

Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) is hoping to be crowned champion again, after he won last year’s race as just the second Dane in history ahead of Slovenia’s two-time Tour de France winner, Tadej Pogacar

It is the 110 th edition of the French Grand Tour that will feature Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Richard Carapaz , silver medallist Wout van Aert and bronze medallist Pogacar.

La Grande Boucle will cover 3,404 km over the 21 stages, with the final stage taking place at the Champs-Élysées in Paris on 23 July. There are eight flat stages, four hilly stages, one time trial and eight mountain stages. Four of these have summit finishes, including the stage to the mythical Puy de Dôme.

176 riders will be on the start line at the Guggenheim Museum, one of Bilbao’s major tourist attractions, with eight riders for each of the 22 teams.

Below you will find everything you need to know about this year’s Tour de France.

How to qualify for road cycling at Paris 2024. The Olympics qualification system explained

Tour de france 2023 general classification riders to watch.

In 2022, we witnessed a breathtaking duel between Vingegaard and Pogacar , and they are coming into this year’s race as the two big favourites.

The 26-year-old Dane has participated in four stage races this season, having won three of them in dominant fashion - O Gran Camiño, Itzulia Basque Country, and most recently the Critérium du Dauphiné.

Pogacar and Vingegaard last faced each other at the Paris-Nice in March, where the 24-year-old Slovenian claimed victory ahead of David Gaudu and Vingegaard .

UAE Tean Emirates captain Pogacar has claimed no less than 14 victories this season including Paris-Nice, Tour of Flanders, Amstel Gold Race and La Flèche Wallonne, before he crashed and broke his wrist at the Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

The two-time Il Lombardia winner made his comeback last week, claiming both the Slovenian national time trial and road race championship.

2022 Giro d’Italia winner Jai Hindley is going to be the leader on a strong BORA - Hansgrohe team. At the Critérium du Dauphiné, 27-year-old Hindley finished fourth behind Adam Yates of the UAE Team Emirates and his compatriot Ben O'Connor of AG2R Citroën Team.

With his win at last year’s Giro, the Australian has shown that he has the endurance needed to compete in a three-week Grand Tour.

22-year-old Mattias Skjelmose (Denmark) stunned the world of cycling by winning the Tour de Suisse earlier this month ahead of the likes of Remco Evenepoel and Juan Ayuso .

He continued his impressive run and was crowned Danish road race champion on Sunday (25 June), after a spectacular solo effort in the final kilometres.

The Trek-Segafredo rider has participated in one Grand Tour previously as he rode the Giro d’Italia last year finishing just 40 th . This year’s Tour de France will be a test of his stamina.

And dont count out Enric Mas. The 28-year-old Spaniard has finished second in the general classification at the Vuelta a España three times and is hoping to make the podium at the Tour.

The Movistar rider came in top six overall in three stage races this season.

Other key riders at the Tour de France 2023

Green jersey.

Last year's points competition winner Wout van Aert has already announced that the green jersey will not be a target for him as he aims to win stages and prepare for the UCI Cycling World Championships that takes place just two weeks after the finish in Paris.

That leaves Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin-Deceuninck as the favourite to take the crown. The Belgian clinched two stages last season - including the most prestigious sprint finish on the Champs-Élysées - and he has already six race wins this season. His versatile teammate Mathieu van der Poel seems to be in the shape of his life, and if the Paris-Roubaix winner gets the freedom to chase the green jersey, watch out for the Dutchman.

The biggest threat might come from Soudal-Quick Step that always target stage wins with their sprinter. Fabio Jakobsen will be their trusted sprinter, like last year. The Dutchman is supported by a strong sprint cast with the most experienced lead-out man in the peloton, Michael Mørkøv, to set him up.

Sprinter’s teams like Team Jayco Alula with Dylan Groenewegen and Lotto Dstny with Caleb Ewan will also chase stage wins and are contenders for the green jersey.

Denmark’s Mads Pedersen and Biniam Girmay of Eritrea are not only great sprinters but also good climbers. That ability can secure points for the green jersey classification on the more hilly stages. Pedersen took his first Tour de France stage win in last year’s edition and claimed the green jersey in the Vuelta a España, but like van Aert he has announced his focus is to arrive in top shape at the UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow.

Polka dot jersey

In the last three editions of the Tour de France, the winner of the king of the mountains classification has also been the overall winner of the Tour de France. Therefore, Pogacar and Vingegaard are the top contenders this year.

For the French riders it will be a special achievement to be on the podium in Paris wearing the polka dot jersey. Thibaut Pinot , who was king of the mountains classification at the Giro d’Italia in May is keen on challenging the two top guns as is 2019 polka dot jersey winner Romain Bardet .

Tour de France 2023 route and important stages

The 2023 Tour de France begins with a hilly stage containing some 3,400 metres of climbing. Contenders for the overall win will have to be ready from the start on the hills around Bilbao. The stage suits classics specialist like Mathieu van der Poel , Wout van Aert and Julian Alaphilippe who all want to be the first rider to wear the yellow jersey at this year’s Tour de France.

After another hilly stage in the Basque Country to San Sebastian on stage two, the peloton will cross the French border and resume the race with flat stages on day three and four.

Stage five will take the peloton on the first mountain stage in the Pyrenees which includes Col du Soudet and Col de Marie Blanque. The following day, the riders will tackle the mythical mountain Col du Tourmalet before finishing the stage on the category 1 climb Cauterets-Cambasque. Week one concludes with an eagerly anticipated summit finish to the volcano Puy de Dôme that returns to the Tour after a 35-year absence.

On stage 13 in week two, the teams face a gruelling finish to Col du Grand Colombier in the Jura mountains. The two following days will also test the riders’ climbing skills with stage 15 featuring a summit finish to Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc in the Alps to end week two.

The final week kicks off with stage 16, the only individual time trial in the race. It is just 22 kilometres long but contains a fair amount of climbing, especially in the second part of the route. After the time trial, the queen stage of the Tour de France with more than 5000 metres of climbing is sure to generate plenty of drama. Colo de la Loze, the highest point of the race at 2304m, is the biggest obstacle on this stage being 28 kilometres long, with an average gradient of six percent.

Two flatter stages follow ahead of a short but mountainous penultimate stage in the Vosges on stage 20. It will be the last chance for the general classification contenders to gain time before the celebrations in Paris.

As was announced by Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna and her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, during the November 24, 2023, high-level dialogue on people-to-people exchanges, the official launch of the Franco-Chinese Year of Cultural Tourism (ATC) is taking place today in China during the opening ceremony of the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival, with Olivia Grégoire, Minister Delegate for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, Trade, Small-Scale Industry, and Tourism, in attendance.

2024 will be marked by the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between France and China. In light of this, the Franco-Chinese Year of Cultural Tourism seeks to promote France as a tourist and cultural destination to a Chinese audience. The numerous events organized in over 30 Chinese cities throughout the year will highlight France’s tangible and intangible heritage, its vital art scene, and its cultural and creative industries. Prestigious French institutions such as the Palace of Versailles, the Mobilier National, and the Ballet of the Opéra national de Bordeaux will offer an exceptional series of events in order to introduce audiences to the French arts, whether classic or contemporary, in fields ranging from music to arts and crafts, filmmaking, and literature.

Additionally, the Franco-Chinese Year of Cultural Tourism aims to promote China as a tourist and cultural destination to a French audience.
